PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

REFLECTING ON A HUGELY SUCCESSFUL YEAR AND LOOKING AHEAD AT GREAT THINGS TO COME!

A

s I am writing my final article and reviewing the accomplishments we made this year, it’s amazing to me how quickly the year has gone by and everything we have achieved. The credit belongs to a great leadership team, engaged members and our dedicated staff!

Among our goals for 2018 was focusing on recruiting new members, engaging existing members and having some fun in the process! We changed the structure of our Membership, Spike Committees and Associates Council. Each of these groups exceeded their goals. Our membership is 466 strong today, up 35 members from this

time last year, as a result. We created an exciting marketing campaign and strategy to promote the value of membership. The Remodelor’s Council attendance has more than doubled this year. We added two new events, Casino Night and Homebuilders Expo. The Golf Tournament enjoyed record attendance! We moved our very successful auction to the Education Foundation. The Tour of Homes and Chefs on Tour were fantastic with doubled ticket sales from the previous year. Beer with a Builder continued as a very popular OMB event. It was so cool to see so many new members getting to know each other.

Our EO Angela White, built a solid team this year - Events Director Brianna Bedell, Government Affairs Director Erin Hall, Communications Specialist Jill Williams and Membership Coordinator Jenni Hatfield. Behind the scenes - we switched the database/billing system, rebuilt the website and started an online leads generator program. If you have served on any committees or councils, you are already aware of how much this team does for our members and how well they work together.

If you haven’t had a chance to meet them, please stop by the office – you will be impressed by how well they represent OMB. This Chalk Line will publish shortly before

November 6th elections. Please VOTE! It is more important than ever to exercise your right to participate in the process. Please see pages 10-11 for a look at candidates endorsed by The Affordable Housing Council.

We have done an excellent job engaging more members this year and to borrow from Past President Mike Auderer’s 2016 yearend review, I would also love to walk into an OMB event or board room five years from now and look out on a sea of fresh faces in leadership. In 2019, I will chair the Nominations Committee. Please come talk with me if you have any questions about taking on a leadership role at OMB. Speaking of 2019 – incoming President Erik Jensen has put together a great leadership team, committee chairs and councils. In preparing for his presidency, Erik and our EO attended a National Association of Homebuilders Leadership Planning retreat. I asked Erik what his biggest takeaway was from the retreat. Without skipping a beat – Erik shared how proud he was of our association – our overall health both financially, in spirit, our leadership and focus!

Please share a link to the new OMB leads generator page on your website, social media and newsletters to help us promte this amazing tool!

Here is a quick snapshot of how the Leads Generator works:

1. Consumers from the public access the searchable online directory from the "Hire A Pro" tab or button on the omb.org home page.

2. At that point, choose a business category, such as painting or remodeling, which pulls up all members listed in that category.

3. At the top of the listings, there is a link called "Contact These Businesses" which allows consumers to put in their personal information, as well as their project details. Consumers can choose to send the quote to the entire list or select specific members listed to contact.

4. The quote request is then generated out via email to OMB members.

It’s as simple as that!

ELECTION DAY IS ALMOST UPON US AND WE ALL NEED TO MAKE SURE WE GET OUT AND VOTE!

OTING MATTERS!

Election Day is almost upon us and we all need to make sure we get out and VOTE! It’s also important to encourage employees, co-workers, friends and family members to vote. Elections have an impact on the atmosphere in which you work, and they can directly impact your personal life.

As far as the home building industry goes, people that hold local office have a serious immediate effect on how you do business. They make choices daily that impact the industry, and their leadership sets the tone for the staff you work with in your local jurisdictions.

The Government Affairs program is a top priority for your Association. However, accomplishments in this program are dependent upon the ability of OMB members and staff to work with elected officials and local staff.

We need electeds who understand what the housing industry brings to the local economy and how important OMB’s mission of providing affordable housing for all economic segments of society is to our local community.

Voting matters!

Each year, The Affordable Housing Council (TAHC) evaluates and interviews contenders for elected office to identify candidates that are housing, development, and business friendly. Make sure to visit our election year spread on pages 10 and 11 to find out more about the important campaigns throughout our geographic boundaries. There you can find a list of all our TAHC-endorsed candidates.

You’re probably already aware that Bud Blake is up for re-election for Thurston County Commissioner. The race for Thurston County Commissioner is easily the most pivotal race in our region. In the four years since Commissioner Blake was elected, he has had a positive impact on Thurston County and the ability to do business within its borders. He was instrumental in developing responsible policy concerning habitat conservation – something that has had a direct impact on our ability to provide housing in Thurston County. He extended the hours and enhanced the customer service attitude at the county permit center, drastically improved the process for filing for a permit on gopher soils and developed a county-wide Habitat Conservation Plan that is awaiting federal approval.

I personally believe Commissioner Blake’s success is due to his ability to bring people with differing views together to find common ground while always keeping his eye on what’s best for the whole County.

Bud Blake is committed to the belief that we can have a healthy environment AND a healthy economy, and that belief is what will carry Thurston County forward. His first four years were spent cleaning up a lot of inherited messes and doing it well - I’m excited to see what he can achieve with four more years!

I don’t think it’s possible to overstate the importance of getting out to vote, especially in Thurston County! Your voice matters!

Jon distinguishes himself by a commitment to collaboration and justice.

MEASURE TO INITIATE THE HOME RULE CHARTER PROCESS On your ballot this year, you’ll have the option to vote on whether Lewis County should start the process to become a charter county. In a nutshell – this would let Lewis County re-design how the county government is organized. The changes could be as minor as increasing the number of commissioners from three to five, but the change could also be massive, including appointing the sheriff and other department heads, and allowing for initiatives and referendums.

There’s no way to tell the outcome unless the measure passes and a new county charter is written.
