ARCHITECTURE PROJECTS

Marly Wrinckler

The project is exploring opportunies of elasticity of borders between public and private space. The urban system of not finally defined boundaries of the project allows to create diverse and flexible urban scenarios, that adapt to changing lifestyles and needs of neighbourhood inhabitants.

Liepaja, Latvia 2014 architectural contest proposal for [homemadedesert.com] O l g a Tr e b u h i n a , Ta m a r a K a l a n t a j e v s k a

The pattern of resort Located in ex-capital of Latvia resort tourism, Liepaja, Berchi designed healing mud Bath house, w a i t s i t ’s t i m e t o r e v i v e i t ’s p a s t g l o r y. Project programe offers to expand existing function, providing appartments and various entertainment facilities for resorters. One of the very few buildings in the sea park, the bath house development should follow different rules of space making. We see it as a challenge.

Classicism Matrix The scenario of travelling in space is set up around the main character - connection to the sea. Importance of central axis leads to the thoroughfull viewpoint selection. We open up the inner structure of the bath house and create a serias of shallow lakes, continuing the Berchi line. Visitor is moving through the illusionary landscape - walking the line between physical and reflected.

Emphasize existing elegance by adding linear volume and increasing horizontality

New volume is elevated in the middle t over the central axis - way to the sea. A being a continuity of existing seaside p

to create bridge At the same type path.

increased transparency

Bath House Restoration

More transparency in the center to preserve most valuable view to the dome. Area for public activity - library, cafe, tea and book shop

Move road further away! To give space for the fountain. From now on bathhouse can reflect on its surface

By replacing dense wall material with the slightly translucent one we open up the inner structure of the building. Live inside begins to be visible through play of shadows.

Compact volume - maximum unbuilt space filled with trees, terraces, lakes

area

the story The area is located in a crossing of important traffic vessels of Kaunas - Karaliaus mindaugo prospect, Prietilčio road and Vytauto prospect. Having a very strategically successful location (10 min walk from city center, 2 min from train station), the area consists of partly or totally left-over postindustrial giants or is chaotically build-up with garages/ warehouses. We think, this district is a big challenge and opportunity for the future development of Kaunas.

There are 5 urban strategies we use in out proposal: STagES oF arEa acTiVaTion

Strategy 1 5 minUte City The task of the strategy is to convert existing caroriented district to walking/ cycling friendly district. The dimensions of the area allow to reach any its point in 5 minutes. The idea is to create a selfsufficient neighborhood - small city inside the city - with all necessary functions that form contemporary urban live! Strategy 2 green & blUe City being located on green hill coasts of two important rivers - nemunas and neris, Kaunas supposed to be kept in mind of each visitor as waterfront, green boulevard and park city. The task is to improve existing green& blue network, by creating new public spaces and connections in close relationship with nature. Strategy 3 Urban aCCUpUnCtUre in situation of economic crisis, new models for urban development have to be proposed. The way of tabula rasa (way of re-constructing all from blank page) does not suit new terms of sustainable contemporary design any more. Existing structure of the city has to be maximally used, re-used and recycled. We propose a strategy that will activate city existing structure step by step. This type of masterplan can be realized gradually/ partly, allowing the city to develop as fast as it gets supported financially, with the growth of needs for new spaces and functions. Strategy 4 DiVErSE & Dynamic ciTy instead of exploding existing Kaunas center, we propose to create new local centers of social life in other neighborhoods. The Postindustrial castles district merges different functions, creating dense urban environment that would be interesting for various types of public. The public space of the area is flexible to use for different occasions of city life - celebrations, sport marathons, exibitions, concerts, installations, markets, water activities and everyday chill-out. Strategy 5 lithUanian soUl The task is to find new and strengthen existing identity of Kaunas - dynamic contemporary city with ancient roots. To find the harmony between big scale megapolis urbanity and Kaunas green soul. To find ways how to merge provincial charm with postindustrial beauty.

girstupis river escape museum is proposed to be connected with Kaunas contemporary art gallery, forming one unique complex. connection with the water and engineering heritage will give a particular atmosphere to the place and will work as a strong public attraction magnet for nemunas waterfront activation.

Exploring the possibilities of magistral road, we propose to transfrom degradated territory of metal production factory into a creative industry and entertainment district!

existing postindustrial hall is included in new entertainment and creative industry complex. Volumes of a particular river bar/ small club are activating the bridge 1 pedestrian path network connects the site with the surrounding area, waterfront and supports the development of nemunas left coast

new pedestrian connection network works as a spine of the structure. new volumes are put in by evaluating existing 19th century building and postindustrial hall. the scale of the area varies - from wide open space of magistral road, breathtaking view from the roof terrace of former metal factory - to medium scale inner plaza and cosy green bouleward. the area around the magistral road has the spirit of megapolis another type of urban aesthetics, that creates the face of Kaunas. being an important vessel of everyday life, the road can also work as a magnet of public attraction forming an particular urban background for special events and occations.

kiemas is a starting point for visitors of the city on their way to the waterfront. System of inner courtyards (kiemas) forms an unique type of lithuanian space neighbourhood with small scale buildings - cosy, green and welcoming.

The neighbourhood development starts with the opening of building boarders - to create maximally accessible and connected yards. We propose this territory to work as small business, shop and workshop area to promote local production and to create a welcoming platform for tourists, searching for lithuanian spirit!

Challenge of Art-Nouveau Riga, 2015 architectural contest proposal for [Riga Business School]

07

O . Tr e b u h i n a , T. K a l a n t a j e v s k a

Schools, universities are temples of knowledge. We were exploring how this metaphor can perform on physical, spatial level. Challenge of transforming a unique Art-Nouveau building led to number of key decisions. By following the main principle of Art-Nouveau - fluidity of space (or unfolding space) we created a chau of key spaces, connected through the giant light wells. Creation of modern environment where process of studying is fully enjoyed and celebrated was our main intension.
