Olsen Annexe gallery is proud to present Underwood by artist Toby Burrows. Underwood explores memory as landscape; a terrain shaped by time and imagination. Resembling the visceral patina of timeless oil paintings, the works bear lines and scars that trace the passage of experience, metaphors for the journeys we each traverse.
A childlike sense of wonder threads through the series; a contemplation on place, and the hidden geographies we occupy in our hearts and dreams. Each photograph is hand-manipulated through a meditative repetition, adopting a sculptural form marked by imperfection and fragility, where beauty emerges from the traces of age and erosion.
Rooted in Burrows’ memories of growing up in Paddington, Underwood becomes a quiet return home — not to a fixed place, but to the shifting terrain of memory itself.
Toby Burrows is a Sydney-based photographer known for his arresting, often surreal imagery that blurs the lines between the constructed and the organic. At the heart of his practice is a belief in the power of simplicity, honesty, and curiosity — and a continual exploration of the unexpected.
