Tim Summerton’s latest series, Valley’s End, pays tribute to the striking natural beauty that surrounds his timber studio, tucked away in the heart of Kangaroo Valley. Serving as a kind of visual journal, these works capture the lyrical charm of the region, its shifting light, rolling hills, and atmospheric depth.

A recent evolution in Summerton’s practice involves a process of washing down the painted surface, gently removing layers of pigment to reveal traces of earlier marks; ghosts of the painting’s own making. This technique adds a sense of memory and movement, echoing the landscape’s constant transformation.

Summerton’s imagery is never a literal rendering of place. Instead, it oEers a deeply personal interpretation, an emotional mapping of the valley as experienced through time, light, and form. The works evoke the romance of moonlit terrains and carry subtle references to Asian aesthetics, such as a twisted branch suspended above still water.

Born in Sydney in 1978, Tim Summerton holds an Honours degree in Fine Arts from the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Newcastle.
