The Hunt is a visual exploration of the Australian landscape, where history, mythology, and the natural world converge in strikingly detailed compositions. Drawing upon the grandeur of classical painting and the precision of digital photography, the series presents meticulously constructed scenes that interrogate the narratives surrounding Australia’s wilderness.
At the heart of The Hunt is a dramatic tension—one that unfolds in the physical struggle between predator and prey, but also in the deeper historical conflicts that shaped the land. Central to the series is the confrontation between the hunting dogs and the kangaroo, a scene charged with raw energy and symbolic weight. The dogs, bred for pursuit, represent the forces of control and domination, embodying the colonial drive to tame the land and its inhabitants. The kangaroo, a powerful and resilient native creature, stands defiant, embodying both survival and the struggle against displacement. Their battle is frozen in time, a moment of visceral intensity that echoes the broader clash of cultures—where European settlers imposed their order upon a deeply rooted Indigenous world.
The roo dogs in these images are more than just hunting companions; they were essential to the survival of Australia’s early settlers. In a landscape that was both abundant and unforgiving, these specially bred hounds were indispensable for securing food. Kangaroo meat provided much-needed sustenance, bridging the gap between European dietary traditions and the realities of an unfamiliar continent. The dependence on these dogs highlights the fragile balance between survival and dominance—where the settlers, despite their technological and cultural impositions, were ultimately at the mercy of the land they sought to control.
The landscapes—vast, dramatic, and otherworldly—serve as both a celebration of nature’s power and a meditation on the impact of human intervention. Each image is carefully staged, evoking the aesthetics of 19th-century European art, where romanticised depictions of discovery and conquest often masked the realities of colonisation. Here, the landscapes hold both memory and myth, revealing a complex dialogue between past and present.
