ABOUT THE ARTIST
Christina Zimpel is an Australian artist currently based in New York who is known for her vibrant and playful portraits. Zimpel’s often intense, expressive use of colour and dramatic simplified figures create a distinct visual language that is instantly recognisable. Often employing a split horizon, her works are graphic and flattened, suggesting that there is nowhere to hide as her subjects sit fully exposed. Yet, as they gaze directly at the viewer, or perhaps in conversation with one another, there is a reclamation of agency of the female form.
Interested in the subversive power of colour, Zimpel is inspired by childhood memories of the sixties and seventies, glam and punk rock and a love of the Fauves. Her paintings and drawings suggest figures who are neither fully of the present moment nor conventionally idealized, reflecting her personal response to the rapid evolution of society and the growing influence of social media
