MATEO LOFTS 2017 FOXLIN ARCHITECTS SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CALIFORNIA
Permit drawings and project planning for a series of duplexes built on sloped grade. Coordination carried out with San Clemente Planning department and grading consultant to allow for two floors over sunken garage level: the buildings assume a split level design to meet city height requirements. Open outdoor stairs allow access to units and shared roof deck. The buildings adopted a shared entry strategy for generous and welcoming access to the site while maintaining parcel boundaries.

The site plan is bisected into “educational” and “residential” portions. Nested territories are generally courtyard oriented in form, beginning with the soccer field at the site scale and scaling downwards. An axis tilt provides a more dyamic shifting grid within an otherwise rectalinear site.
ORPHANAGE 2011 D. URRUTIA ARCH 484 (DESIGN STUDIO)

Clusters of dormitory units forming smaller scale nested territories.
Staff quarters located for supervision and access
The design of this boy’s orphanage is a reflection of the architectural character and patterns of the immediate adjacent urban context. The driving concern of the design was the question: how to give children a feeling of a safe home? The design strategy is based on a nested layering of progressively more individuated territories - starting with the gated site itself down to each child’s pillow-side window box.
CREW CENTER 2010 E. MOORE ARCH 384 (DESIGN STUDIO)
The proposal replaced an existing rudimentary facility with a minmal impact two-part strategy: a floating boathouse with offices and event space and an “anchor” with exercise and changing facilities. Visitors arrive at the exercise facility cutting through the terrain. At all times is the connection to the outside forest and lake maintained, even when the circulation enjoys the shelter of the indoors. The site is largely navigated by foot, through the trees, as it once was. Emerging from the earth, the path soars over the river bank and arrives at a prospect over the water.

SILO MUSEUM 2013 K. NUTE ARCH 486 (Adv. Design Studio) 14
The Titan I ICBM launch base located at Chico, California has remained defunct for decades. The project proposes a repurposing of the underground structures towards educating the public of the dark but relatively unknown history of weapons of mass destruction. The aim is to capture the unique opportunities of the challenging site to foster a climate of debate surrounding the moral complexities of WMD development and use. The proposal strategy locates visitors within a transgressive liminal space which encounters the archeologically exposed base remnants below. At these points exhibits intervene to tell the story of mass violence as envisioned by 20th century planners.
The museum is organized into a sequence of experiential zones to support the guiding narrative. -Transgression-Compression-Illumination-Investigation-Reconcilliation-
Intervention strategy for Special Exhibit B: Chemical Weapons
An variant of the established intervention strategy, applied to the specific conditions of the launch silo and equipment terminal. The glass form cuts through the top of both concrete structures, allowing the visitor insight into the construction of the original base. Displays are positioned behind the glass, out of reach.
The clinical glazed interior surface of the hall has a suspiciously vacuumchamber like quality - any suffocating ambiance is intentional. The content on display here is severe and the architecture accentuates the point.
Entry Passage
Lobby Antechamber and First Reveals
The initial descent into the earthen depths. On one side display screens behind tinted glazing illuminate forshadowings of exhibits and issues to come.
The antechamber marks the first of a staggered series of arrival points. At this point the organizational concept of “passage-reveal”introduced; a sliver of the concrete control dome peaks through from the depths below.
Arrival Hall Although visitors are now free to explore the halls and the plan has opened impressively, the ceiling height remains the same low 8’. The compressing weight of the space serves as a great contrast to the filtered daylight of the exhibition halls.
