This book presents a century of abstract sculpture (1918–2018) from the novel angle of works conceived to be hung in the air. This artistic category was initiated in the late 1910s by Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, and Alexander Rodchenko, continued in the early 1930s with Alexander Calder and Bruno Munari, then flourished in the 1950s with Soto, François Morellet, Gego, Daniel Buren, Julio Le Parc, Sol LeWitt, or Robert Morris. Artists who have developed the form more recently include Xavier Veilhan, Ernesto Neto, Tomás Saraceno, or Haegue Yang. While many of these hanging works are static, several echo the principle of the “mobile,” to use the term formulated in 1931 by Duchamp with reference to the first sculptures that the American artist Calder hung from the ceiling, where they were subject to the invisible forces of the air. “I asked him what sort of a name I could give these things,” recalled Calder, “and he at once produced ’Mobile.’”1 In fact, Duchamp had already used this term as a secondary title for his Bicycle Wheel (1913), thereby linking the fledgling history of kinetic art to that of hanging sculpture.

Such an aesthetic typology is linked to the dynamic spatialization of the modern gaze, as well as to the questioning of traditional ways of displaying art. It is thus inseparable from overhead hanging, from the ceiling, perhaps using wires. It excludes any conventional support for presenting sculpture, such as floor, base, beam, frame, or wall.

Although markedly non-narrative, this genre is linked to the cosmogonic imagination, to the conquest of the air, and, after the Second World War, of space, but also to the fear of the void, to chandeliers, to hanging (the gallows), and to falling, as much as to levitation and floating. But while it resonates with these images and worlds, this sculpture bucks the idea of a figuration or representation that would limit its initial meaning and range of interpretations to mere anecdote. It is thus the corollary, in real time and space, of much of the abstract painting that emerged a few years earlier, around 1912.

In order to reduce the effect of traction, sculptural material became more airy, lighter. The spatialized outlines of forms indicate the desire to escape gravity, or to enter into conflict with it. What these sculptures lost in inert mass they gained in transparency, equilibrium, articulation, and sometimes (where mobiles are concerned) physical mobility. This aesthetic stemmed from a new kind of relation to the viewer, to the circulation of the gaze induced by structures that, rather than being opaque, were open and sensitive to their immediate surroundings, that is to say, to their host space. This kind of sculpture was not raised up in the classical style, like an edifice, but built according to an aerial, even astral model. Maintaining a distance from the ground, as if levitating, such sculpture is partially withdrawn from the area of the viewer’s movements. This way of dealing with space and gravity comes across as a necessarily abstract aesthetic operation that refuses to fix the meaning and presence of these aerial objects, which exist in a constant tension between falling and rising.

The idea behind this book is to approach this sculpture which breaks free of mimesis and negotiates with gravity, as a genre and category in its own right. The idea came to me in the early 2000s, when I was starting the research that would become my doctoral thesis at the Université Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV), on perceptual abstraction and kineticism in the broad sense, that is, from its origins in around 1912 to its current ramifications. In several exhibitions that I have curated2, I have had the opportunity to highlight this correlation between abstract art and aerial suspension, notably by including large numbers of mobiles from different periods. It is important now to bring together a significant ensemble of these works that, by their material stability, often diverge from the strict meaning of the term “hanging mobile,” in order to reflect the coherence but also the rich diversity of the works produced over the course of a century, from 1918 to 2018.

Working in the tradition of LatinAmerican abstract art and, more particularly, Brazilian NeoConcrete art, Artur Lescher is also close to Russian constructivism, a connection that began with his participation at the São Paulo Bieñal in 1987. His use of regular, sometimes severe forms, slender and spindly, of reflective, curved surfaces, may evoke industrial aesthetics; yet Lescher’s singular approach to geometry and materials takes his work in another direction. “When I choose materials, I try to understand what they want, their vocation.” In this way, he brings out the specific qualities of wood, brass, textiles, stone, copper, and chromed-plated or gilt aluminum, as well as their presence and personality. For example, he may construct two identical hanging pieces in aluminum, one polished and the other covered with a layer of anodized aluminum.

Though installed side by side, they each belong to two divergent sculptural worlds. In other works, he subverts the specific properties of materials: take, for instance, a piece of heavy metal that tapers towards the ground, become pointed like a plumb line, light and fragile, as if it were weightless.

Lescher works with his sculptures the way a director works with his actors.

He avoids any kind of figuration, employing a pared-down formal language and the grammar of historical abstraction: point, line, circle, pyramid, cone, lozenge, ellipse. In this way, he rewrites the coordinates of the spaces within which his sculptures are installed, creating perfectly proportionate scenographies and bare landscapes in which the visitor is invited to wander. Lescher’s sculptures point out the force fields of architectural space, its latent tensions, as though they were pendulums—masses hanging by a thread that detect, make perceptible, and measure forces that would otherwise be invisible.

Lescher’s forms evoke precision optics instruments for making technical measurements (compass, pantograph, telescope) and blunt objects (a sharpened dart or javelin, an aeronautical or haulage cable).

They oscillate between sensuality and aggression.

S’inscrivant dans la tradition de l’art abstrait latino-américain et, plus spécifiquement, du néoconcrétisme brésilien, Artur Lescher n’en est pas moins proche du constructivisme russe, et cela depuis sa participation à la Biennale de São Paulo en 1987.

Ses formes régulières, parfois sévères, longilignes et filiformes, ses surfaces réfléchissantes, ses tiges bombées se rapprochent d’une esthétique industrielle, bien que Lescher s’en éloigne grâce à une approche singulière de la géométrie et des matériaux. « Quand je choisis des matériaux, j’essaie de comprendre leur volonté, leur vocation » : c’est ainsi qu’il met en valeur la qualité spécifique du bois, du laiton, du textile, de la pierre, du cuivre, de l’aluminium chromé ou doré, autant que leur présence et leur personnalité. Il construit par exemple deux pièces identiques suspendues, en aluminium, l’une polie l’autre recouverte par une couche d’aluminium anodisé.

Installées l’une à côté de l’autre, elles appartiennent désormais à deux univers sculpturaux divergents.

Dans d’autres œuvres, il détourne les propriétés spécifiques des matériaux, comme une pièce en métal lourd qui s’effile progressivement vers le sol, pointu comme un fil à plomb, léger et fragile comme s’il n’avait plus de poids. Lescher se comporte avec ses sculptures tel un metteur en scène avec ses acteurs.

Son langage formel épuré, distancié de toute figuration, relève de la grammaire de l’abstraction historique : point, ligne, cercle, pyramide, cône, losange, ellipse.

C’est ainsi qu’il réécrit les coordonnées de l’espace dans lequel les sculptures sont installées.

Dans une scénographie parfaitement proportionnée, dans un paysage dépouillé où l’on est invité à circuler, ses sculptures montrent les lignes de force de l’espace architectural, ses tensions latentes, comme si elles étaient des pendules, c’est-à-dire une masse suspendue à un fil, détectant, rendant perceptibles et mesurant des forces autrement invisibles.

Les formes de Lescher évoquent à la fois des instruments techniques de mesurage et de précision optique (compas, pantographe, télescope) que des objets contondants (une fléchette ou un javelot aigus, un câble aéronautique en traction).

Elles oscillent ainsi entre sensualité et agressivité.

François Morellet (1926–2016) made Sphère-Trames (1962) during his years with the Groupe de Recherches d’Art Visuel (GRAV), between 1960 and 1968. This was his first structure in space: hanging on a cable at eye-height, free of a base, this stainless steel sculpture was exhibited at the third Paris Biennale in 1963. That was also the year when the artist first introduced artificial lighting into his work. Comprising an orthogonal grid that pivots slightly on its axis, Sphère-Trames abolishes the notion of a privileged viewpoint: depending on where the viewer is positioned, either looking frontally at the sphere or through the sphere, it appears alternately full and empty.

In this sense, the work derives directly from Morellet’s paintings of the 1950s. It is as if the grid was now projected onto a sphere, in an absurd attempt to capture and represent the sphericality of the square.

Sphère-Trames is a decisive step in Morellet’s six-decade career. His work is faithful to the tradition of geometrical and anti-lyrical abstraction, deliberately distancing itself from the romantic idea of the creative artist blindly following his sensitivity—a widespread notion throughout the twentieth century.

Influenced by the collages of Sophie Taeuber and Jean Arp, but also by the Oceanic tapas that he saw at the Musée de l’Homme in Paris, as well as by the monochrome—or “monochroidal”—paintings of Alphonse Allais’ Les Arts Incohérents, Morellet reinvented the relatively neutral figure of the grid in Sphère-Trames. In this he found the three qualities that enabled him to analyze any kind of visual man-made phenomenon: simplicity, neutrality, and regularity.

However, the rigor and geometrical austerity of Morellet’s works, and the articulated system of rules behind them, do not add up to a rational world: far from it. By revealing the excess behind any unyielding system, the artist veers to the opposite extreme, that of absurdity and wild liberty, profanatory and iconoclastic. His simplified, controlled universe remains elusive, prone to accident, to imprecision, to ambiguity, to limits, and to chaos. With SphèreTrames, Morellet, that “postmodern Pythagorean” (to quote Thomas McEvilley), proceeds by eliminating everything that is superfluous, by reducing the artist’s intervention, and by engaging in a quest for emptiness and neutrality that have the effectiveness and the power of a paradox, a Zen koan.

C’est à l’époque du Groupe de recherches d’art visuel (GRAV), entre 1960 et 1968, que François Morellet (1926-2016) réalise Sphère-Trames (1962), sa première structure dans l’espace. Suspendue par un câble à hauteur des spectateurs, émancipée de la gravité et du socle, cette sculpture en inox est exposée en 1963 à la IIIe biennale de Paris, précisément l’année où l’artiste introduit la lumière artificielle dans son œuvre.

Composée d’une grille orthogonale légèrement pivotante sur son axe, Sphère-Trames abolit tout point de vue privilégié en jouant sur l’alternance entre plein et vide, selon que l’on contemple la trame pour elle-même ou que l’on regarde à travers la grille. En ce sens, elle émane directement de ses peintures des années 1950, comme si la trame était maintenant projetée sur une sphère, dans une tentative absurde de saisir la sphéricité du carré.

Sphère-Trames est une étape décisive de la carrière de l’artiste, qui se déploie sur plus de six décennies. L’œuvre est fidèle à la tradition de l’abstraction géométrique et anti-lyrique, résolument éloignée de l’idée romantique – encore répandue au XXe siècle – de l’artiste créateur guidé aveuglément par sa sensibilité.

Influencé par les collages de Sophie Taeuber et de Jean Arp mais aussi par les tapas océaniens qu’il découvre au musée de l’Homme de Paris et par les peintures monochromes – ou « monochroïdales » – des Arts incohérents d’Alphonse Allais, Morellet réinvente avec SphèreTrames la figure relativement neutre de la grille. Il y trouve les trois qualités qui lui permettent d’analyser tout phénomène visuel au-delà de la nature : simplicité, neutralité, régularité.

Cependant, la rigueur et l’austérité géométriques de ses œuvres, le système articulé de règles n’atteint pas un monde rationnel, loin s’en faut. En révélant l’aspect excessif de toute obstination, il rejoint son extrémité opposée, c’est-à-dire l’absurdité et la liberté outrancière, profanatrice et iconoclaste. Son univers épuré et contrôlé reste insaisissable, exposé aux accidents, aux imprécisions, à l’ambiguïté, à la limite du chaos. Avec SphèreTrames, Morellet, ce “pythagoricien postmoderne” (Thomas McEvilley), procède par élimination de tout ce qui est superflu, par réduction de l’intervention de l’artiste et par une quête du vide et de la neutralité qui a l’efficacité et la force d’un paradoxe ou d’un koan zen.

Trained as an architect, Argentinean Tomás Saraceno (born San Miguel de Tucumán, 1973) is an artist striving to create tangible utopias. Active in Berlin, he worked for more than ten years on consolidating his futuristic project Aerocene: a terrestrial world punctuated by the floating movements of its inhabitants, effected without fuel, simply through the differences in temperature between masses of air and the interiors of atmospheric sculptures. This eco-conscious dream, this pact with Earth, this ethical compromise, is conceived as an alternative to the Anthropocene, defined in 1995 by Paul Crutzen, recipient of that year’s Nobel Prize for Chemistry, as the era in which the planet is shaped by anthropic activities. Saraceno’s art stands between the heritage of American Land Art and the kinetic tendency identified by the anthropologist Scott Bukatman in his 2003 book Matters of Gravity. The influence of Land Art is apparent in Saraceno’s use of his resources, whether colossal or modest (and sometimes with the support of MIT), both in the heavenly vault and in the wilderness. In the spirit of James Turrell’s Roden Crater, Saraceno has worked on Salar d’Uyuni in Bolivia, a salt plateau that reflects the sky like a mirror when it is covered with water. From this suspended vision, without a horizon, without top or bottom, Saraceno imagines a floating state in the form of Cloud Cities, habitable plastic bubbles of varying sizes.

Their honeycomb structure recalls the geodesic dome designed by Richard Buckminster Fuller, now a New Age icon and symbol of a period that had faith in new technologies. In contrast, on November 8, 2015, Saraceno staged a performance worthy of Land Art: a sky work in which an individual floated up, borne aloft by the heat of one of the bubbles in the sky of New Mexico, at the very place where NASA carried out its first atomic test, seventy years earlier. With Saraceno, suspension is thus a way of being in the world. Flying microcosms recall Carsten Höller’s spatiodynamic slides. Together, viewers experience a thousand gravitational thrills within a “relational aesthetic” (to quote Nicolas Bourriaud). In Milan in 2012, his mobile sculpture Zonal Harmonic 1N 150/9 had the importance of a manifesto. It presented and represented a conception of utopia as a scaleddown cosmos, woven from connections between orbital trajectories. Sewing thread, fishing line, and ropes outline a constructivist figure strongly reminiscent of Alexander Rodchenko’s Spatial Construction No. 12 (1920), another historical work that embodies a futuristic ideology.

Architecte de formation, Tomás Saraceno, né en 1973 à San Miguel de Tucumán (Argentine) est un artiste aux utopies tangibles. Actif à Berlin, il travaille depuis plus de dix ans à consolider son projet futuriste Aerocene : un monde terrestre rythmé par les déplacements flottants de ses habitants, sans usage de combustibles, et par les seuls différentiels de températures entre les masses d’air et l’intérieur de sculptures atmosphériques. Ce rêve éco-conscient, ce pacte avec la Terre, ce compromis éthique se veut une alternative à l’Anthropocène, définie en 1995 par le Prix Nobel de chimie Paul Crutzen comme l’ère dans laquelle la planète porte l’empreinte des activités anthropiques. L’art de Saraceno se situe entre l’héritage du land art américain et la mouvance kinesthésique identifiée par l’anthropologue Scott Bukatman dans son ouvrage de 2003, Matters of Gravity. Saraceno n’hésite pas à déployer des moyens, colossaux ou modestes – appuyés notamment par le MIT – dans la voûte céleste et le wilderness. Dans l’esprit d’un James Turrell, son Roden Crater est le Salar d’Uyuni en Bolivie, un plateau de sel qui reflète le ciel comme un miroir lorsqu’il est recouvert d’eau. À partir de cette vision suspendue, sans horizon, ni haut, ni bas, Saraceno imagine un état flottant dans des espèces de Cloud Cities. Ce sont des bulles habitables en matière plastique à taille variable. Leur structure alvéolaire évoque le dôme géodésique de Richard Buckminster Fuller, figure phare du New Age et d’une époque qui avait foi dans les nouvelles technologies. A contrario, le 8 novembre 2015, Saraceno réalise une performance digne du land art : une œuvre du ciel, soit un individu flottant grâce à la chaleur d’une des bulles, au NouveauMexique – à l’endroit même où la Nasa réalisait soixante-dix ans plus tôt le premier essai nucléaire. Avec Saraceno, la suspension est donc un être au monde. Les microcosmes volants renvoient aux toboggans spatio-dynamiques de Carsten Höller. Les spectateurs éprouvent tous ensemble mille vertiges gravitationnels dans une « esthétique relationnelle » (Nicolas Bourriaud), comme en 2012 à Milan.

Son mobile Zonal Harmonic 1N 150/9 a l’envergure d’une sculpture manifeste. Celle-ci présente et représente à la fois l’utopie et son apparence : un cosmos en réduit tissé de connexions entre les trajectoires orbitales. Fils à coudre, de pêche et cordes dessinent une figure constructiviste typique de la Spatial Construction No. 12 d’Alexander Rodtchenko (1920), autre œuvre historique porteuse d’une idéologie futuriste.
