Dear friends, A Scripture verse that has become one of my very favorites is from Joshua 1:9, it says

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go”. The promise in this Scripture has certainly been a needed reminder for us this past year. Whether it was in the context of our faculties’ work in and out of the classroom or the academic work, and personal growth of our students, many of our numbers have had some very real challenges this year. Yet thanks be to God for his faithfulness and the perseverance of our faculty and students who were able to accomplish much. Oftentimes, people choose a “word of the year” that is their focus or theme that anchors them in the ups and downs of life. Sometimes the word is selected at the beginning of a calendar year or a new chapter and embodies how they want to show up in their work and lives. While the McGraw School of Business did not select a new word or phrase at the beginning of our year, we continue to hold to a theme that has been ours for several years. “A Head for Business, A Heart for God, And Hands for Humanity”. So, what does that look like in real-world terms for our students?

A Head for Business translates into learning subject matter and establishing competence and knowledge within their chosen majors. Every graduate from the McGraw School of Business is also required to complete at least one internship as a graduation requirement. Why do we do that? Because our students gain hands-on, real-life experiences and learning in the midst of their course work. A Heart for God. At Olivet, we are unapologetically Christian and seek to integrate faith and learning each day. Besides faculty regularly sharing Scripture and devotionals in class, opening class with prayer, mentoring students in their faith journey or hosting weekly bible studies with business students, we truly take “Education with a Christian Purpose” seriously. Hands for Humanity. We believe that besides developing content expertise, and academic excellence during the college years, there is more to a robust education than just book knowledge. That’s why we integrate faith and learning in our classes and on our campus. We sincerely hope that each of these values then translate into Olivet students and graduates serving others. If our expertise and knowledge is only used to advance ourselves and our careers, we have missed an important value of service to humanity.

In this issue, we reflect on the many accomplishments and contributions of our students and faculty, this past year for the McGraw School of Business I am confident that if you asked each of our faculty and staff members what their “why” is for being at Olivet, they would tell you “it’s the students”. That isn’t just talk; the central focus of our work is the students. Simply put, they are the reason we are here. In addition to the important work that happens here on campus, there are many who contribute to the work of shaping and transforming students’ lives. Alumni, donors, community members, guest speakers who visit our classrooms, or return to be a part of the annual Createur Conference, every person adds to the richness and impact of the Olivet experience. To everyone who contributes to the success of the McGraw School of Business each year, we say a heartfelt “thank you”! Dr. Jeff Williamson Associate Professor McGraw School of Business

DAN FERRIS AND HIS IMPACT

HOW EXPERIENCE AND FAITH ARE SHAPING ENTREPRENEURSHIP AT OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY.

“Entrepreneurship isn’t something you can fully understand just by sitting in a classroom. You have to experience it.” THE 2025-2026 ACADEMIC YEAR began

an exciting new chapter for the School of Business at Olivet Nazarene University. With the addition of Professor Dan Ferris as Director of the Entrepreneurship Program, the university continues to invest in a vision centered on growth, innovation, and student development. Dan Ferris brings over 30 years of industry experience, but what stands out most is not where he has been, but where he is leading the program next. In his philosophy, the program should have a certain structure and consistency with a view on preparing students for their future life. Taking into account the fact that the program of entrepreneurship continues to develop, Ferris has taken the responsibility to create stability in order to strengthen the program academically. “My goal is for students to feel confident in what they’re learning,” Ferris explains. “They should know that what they are gaining here will truly prepare them for what comes next.” He is currently striving to make a shift, making sure that practical elements are included in the program, whereby students are actually immersed in reality where they can try out their ideas and overcome problems that arise from them. The move is a significant development in the program considering there is a rising need for individuals

who can “think on their feet” and make sound decisions. At the same time, Ferris emphasizes that entrepreneurial studies students should undertake a related business major to equip themselves with different skills that will increase their chances in the job market. Aside from teaching, he leads the Createur Conference, which is a pitch competition for both high school and college students. He is enhancing the conference to grow attendance, expand reach and make the experience even more educational. Through his involvement with high school and college students, he is trying to also make the conference an introduction to Olivet, in line with the goal of nurturing men and women of integrity and a wider understanding of success. “I want students to understand that it’s not just about getting a job or making money,” he shares. “It’s about how you lead, how you treat people, and the impact you have.” Through mentorship, real-world insight, and commitment to faith-centered leadership, Ferris is helping shape students into individuals who are both professionally prepared and personally grounded.

PROGRAM EXCELLENCE

Accounting at Olivet

Distinguished Professional Outcomes

Strategic Leadership through Olivet’s Accounting Program In the modern marketplace, accounting is a sophisticated discipline of leadership. As Associate Professor Dave Horton defines it: “Accounting is the language of business. It is foundational to all financial knowledge and can apply to any industry”. We provide students at the McGraw School of Business with the means to be good stewards of resources through language specifically, business language and provide the foundation necessary for them to have long-term viability as organization leaders. At Olivet Nazarene University, we are also in the midst of transformational change. Over the past four years, our accounting program has increased by 400%, making it the third largest major at our institution. Additionally, this year marks the largest graduating class in history for accounting with 41 graduates.

Graduate Employment Rate 95% of interns secure full-time positions prior to graduation; 95% of the Class of 2026 has secured employment or admission into graduate school. Industry Confidence Olivet students are actively recruited by all “Big 4” Accounting Firms and nearly every other top 10 national accounting firm. Outstanding Performance All Olivet students who took the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exam passed the test. Dave Horton Named Outstanding Educator by the Illinois CPA Society, April 2026. “I am humbled by this recognition. It is a privilege to work with students at Olivet. Watching them achieve their goals, secure internships, accept jobs and continue to grow in their spiritual journey has been very rewarding.” - Dave Horton Scan to read full story >

Learning That Serves: The VITA Program Purpose & Professionalism at Olivet Aubrey Velzen, Class of 2026, discovered her purpose after joining the Accounting Department at Olivet Nazarene University (ONU). She credits the program’s integration of technical skills and biblical values with giving her a strong foundation for success, including internships with two of the 15 largest accounting firms in the U.S. as she works toward becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Aubrey’s experience at ONU has been shaped by the intentional support of faculty, especially Professors Horton and Mills. Through her time as a teaching assistant and accounting tutor, she has experienced their investment and mentorship firsthand—support that extends beyond the classroom, from attending her swim meets to providing individualized career guidance. Through VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), tutoring and her work as a teaching assistant, Aubrey has strengthened her ability to communicate complex financial concepts while gaining valuable hands-on experience. Combined with the program’s strong academics, these opportunities have helped her connect what she learns in the classroom with the realities of the professional world.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program represents the intersection of classroom theory and community service. This IRS-sponsored initiative requires students to pass rigorous certification exams with a minimum score of 80%. The impact is substantial:

COMMUNITY SERVICE

In the 2025 cycle, 88 student volunteers assisted in preparing 645 Federal and State returns.

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

Students like Aubrey use VITA to gain valuable tax preparation experience while helping those in need. At Olivet, we believe professional success is most meaningful when used for good. We are not just training accountants; we are preparing faithful leaders to make a difference in the lives of others.

Having recently graduated from Olivet, Aubrey feels prepared to take the CPA exam and begin her career as an auditor with a public accounting firm. She is proud of how she has grown at Olivet and confident that her education has prepared her to pursue whatever God calls her to do next.

PROGRAM EXCELLENCE

Economics and Fina at Olivet industry members from all over the country while learning about emerging investment strategies and trends in the financial industry.

Learning Finance by Doing Olivet’s finance program is continuing its commitment to experiential learning. Students are consistently encouraged to apply what they are learning in real-world situations that mimic actual decision-making in finance. One of the best opportunities available to students at our university is through involvement with our own student run investment club that has a real money portfolio. Founded in 2017 with $50,000 of initial capital, the club has increased to over $1,000,000 of assets managed and provides students with insight into what it’s like to manage investment portfolios.

Heading into the upcoming academic year, a substantial $235,630.82 transfer will move directly from the Investment Fund into the School of Business. Funds transferred to the McGraw School of Business help provide students with valuable educational and professional development opportunities. These resources support student travel for conferences and presentations, participation in competitions, guest speaker events, and other curricular and co-curricular activities, while also contributing to the effective operation of the School of Business.

Being a part of this club also provides students with a connection to the larger financial industry. In April 2026, students were able to participate in the Student Managed Investment Fund Conference (SMIFC) in Miami. At this conference, students engage with students and financial

Olivet’s finance program provides students with two special academic tracks that are recognized in the financial industry. Olivet’s Personal Finance academic track is recognized by the CFP board and provides students with a pathway to pursue a Certified Financial Planner certification. Olivet’s Corporate Finance academic track provides students with a pathway to pursue a CFA Level I certification.

A Growing Interest in Economics In addition to the continued success of the Finance program, Olivet’s Economics program is gaining traction with its enrollment in the Applied Economics concentration more than doubling over the past two years. The study of economics is appealing to students because of its potential to help us understand how markets and institutions and public policy shape our world. The courses within the Economics program challenge students to think critically about economics and its role in shaping our world. For example, in the Public Sector Economics course, students explore topics such as Environmental Economics and Christian Stewardship and how economics and ethics intersect with care for creation. Economics is not only studied at school. The Economics Club allows students to learn more about and participate in discussions about important ideas. Throughout the academic year, Olivet’s Economics Club studied certain aspects of F.A. Hayek’s book “The Fatal Conceit: The Errors of Socialism.” All of these experiences provided an opportunity for the department to demonstrate that it is preparing thoughtful economists who will have analytic skills as well as a broad perspective on how to solve the current economic problems facing the world today.

ance FROM CLASSROOM TO CAREER For many graduates, these experiences translate directly into meaningful careers. Kathryn Swanson, Class of 2024, is now employed as a financial advisor and helps individuals and families navigate important financial decisions. “I bring clarity and confidence to any individual’s financial plan,” Kathryn says. “Olivet’s financial planning track gave me the knowledge I needed to have a strong start in this field. After school, I was able to hit the ground running due to my classwork, experience in Investment Club and Enactus, and the relationships I built.”

“All of my professors helped me pursue success in my career but more importantly my faith.” For Erik Richter, Class of 2024, mentorship and practical experience have been key factors in defining his professional path. “While attending Olivet in 2020, I knew I wanted to major in finance, but was unsure of my professional path,” says Erik. “Through Professor Nielsen’s genuine interest in my professional and spiritual development, as well as the engaging work experiences with the investment club, I began to develop a passion for economics and finance.” Upon completing a highly competitive internship, Erik has gone on to work full-time at Blue Trust directly out of Spring 2024.

“Through Professor Nielsen’s genuine interest, I began to develop a passion for economics and finance.”

A World of Opportunity For nearly 30 years, the School of Business at Olivet Nazarene University has prepared graduate students to become confident, purpose-driven leaders through its MBA and Master of Organizational Leadership (MOL) programs. The School also now offers both fully online and Hybrid MBA options, giving students greater flexibility while also providing international students with a pathway that meets F-1 visa requirements. Olivet Nazarene University has been transformational for Keylan Salazar ’25. As an international MBA student, Keylan states that her experience at the university has been much more than acquiring knowledge. She says, “It’s like opening up a whole new world.” The entire learning process has been hands-on and exciting, as the curriculum is built in such a way that it relates well to practical applications.

“When you know that Olivet has your back, you know you are in the right place.” Keylan further elaborates on this by saying, “The classes are really good, and you receive personalized comments from professors that make you feel like you are right next to them.” Even though shifting to a completely different country was challenging, the continuous mentoring and chances have made her feel more and more at home.

MBA AND MOL PROGRAMS AT OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY Olivet Nazarene University’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Organizational Leadership (MOL) degrees provide flexible pathways for those who aspire to lead teams, navigate dynamic business environments, and achieve both professional and personal goals.

Throughout the school year, cutting edge business leaders from each business degree within the School of Business are invited to campus to share their experiences and challenge our students to excellence.

MARKETING AND ADVERTISING

DEMETRI MORRIS The Human Element: A Personal Look at How Demetri Morris Is Redefining Marketing Success technology should amplify—not replace—human connection. That philosophy shapes not only his approach to marketing, but also his leadership: “We’re not creating new leaders; we’re empowering people to become one.”

KEY TAKEAWAYS When speaking to students, Demetri encourages future professionals to build their lives around three habits: Be Authentic Demetri Morris (’20) began his entrepreneurial journey from a couch in 2020, launching a business during a global shutdown with a laptop, a vision, and a belief that taking bold action is better than waiting for the perfect moment. When he returned to Olivet this year to speak with marketing students, he brought a story that was both accomplished and relatable.

“Stop trying so hard to make a face that fits others. Be real, be authentic, be human.”

Since earning his bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems from Olivet, Demetri has been named to Forbes 30 Under 30 in Marketing & Advertising and built a growing career in digital business. He is the founder of MORR, a digital agency and venture studio built around relationships, strategy, and authentic human connection.

Be Bold

His growing portfolio also includes Incipio, a B2B strategy execution platform; Quota, an AI communication tool; and The Strategy Playbook, his guide to modern marketing. Across these ventures, Demetri remains focused on solving real problems while keeping people at the center of technology and business. At the heart of his work is a mission to humanize brands. As automation and artificial intelligence continue to reshape business, Demetri believes

Authenticity means knowing your purpose and refusing to settle for a path that doesn’t align with who you are. His guiding phrase, “Think higher, not lower,” is a reminder to keep aiming toward the life you want to build. “Be willing to execute what others would rather not do.” Growth requires the courage to move forward, even when the outcome is uncertain. Demetri views setbacks differently: “Failure is the actual feedback.” Each experience offers something to learn from and use moving forward.

Take Action

“Stop studying. Start doing.” For Demetri, progress ultimately comes down to execution. His mindset is simple: “I must get this done, and if not now, then when?” Rather than waiting for the perfect opportunity or feeling fully prepared, he encourages students to take the next step and keep advancing.

WEBER LEADERSHIP SPEAKER SERIES

MARKETING AND ADVERTISING

DAN CHAPMAN

Lessons from the Founder: Redd Remedies CEO Dan Chapman Shares Insights with Students could communicate value quickly enough to capture someone’s attention. Dan also spoke candidly about growing Redd Remedies. Starting in the wholesale market required significant investments in distribution and promotion, but that persistence helped the company reach major retailers like Whole Foods and expand internationally into markets including China and South Korea. His experience demonstrated how a clear mission, paired with patience and strategic growth, can create opportunities well beyond a company’s original reach. Dan Chapman, CEO and founder of Redd Remedies, visited campus to offer business students an inside look at what it takes to build a mission-driven company. Well known in the health and wellness industry, he shared insights on entrepreneurship, branding, and purpose, followed by an open Q&A with students. His experience gave students a firsthand perspective on turning personal conviction into a successful and growing business. His business journey is deeply personal. Dan’s family entered the natural foods industry in 1961, but his mother’s health struggles ultimately shaped the heart of Redd Remedies and its guiding message, “Feel Better. Live Better.” That mission is reflected in the company’s holistic approach to wellbeing through Body, Mind, and Spirit. He encouraged students to recognize that strong businesses often begin with genuine purpose and a desire to improve people’s lives. Drawing on the Story Brand framework, Dan emphasized positioning the customer as the hero of a brand’s story. With increasingly short attention spans, companies have only seconds to make an impression, making a clear, compelling message essential to building trust and engagement. He challenged students to consider whether their own messages

When discussing marketing, Dan emphasized authenticity and consistency. Audiences connect with content that feels real, and even small imperfections can make a brand more relatable. Maintaining that authenticity through a consistent voice, message, and level of quality, he explained, is what ultimately builds long-term credibility and loyalty.

KEY TAKEAWAYS Be Mission-Driven Core values centered on helping others provide the strongest foundation for enduring success. The Customer is the Hero Make the customer the center of your brand’s story to maximize engagement. Consistency Builds Trust Maintain consistency in all actions and media to build strong brand loyalty. Be Authentic Authentic media, even if imperfect, creates a deeper connection with your audience.

ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE

ROB LANGRICK Investing in the Future: How ONU Students Are Preparing for a New Era in Finance The world of finance is constantly evolving, and students in Olivet Nazarene University’s Investments class recently gained insight into two forces transforming the industry: index investing and artificial intelligence (AI). Students heard from Rob Langrick, CFA and Chief Product Advocate at the CFA Institute, whose career spans global equity research, private equity, and leadership of Bloomberg’s finance education programs. Langrick shared how future finance professionals can embrace emerging technology without losing sight of the foundational principles that guide the industry. A major focus of the session was AI’s growing role in finance. Langrick demonstrated how tools like Claude for Financial Analysis can streamline workflows, accelerate learning, and give analysts more time to focus on strategic decision-making. For students preparing for internships and careers, becoming comfortable working alongside these tools will be increasingly important. But Langrick emphasized that greater efficiency does not lessen human responsibility. AI-generated information must be understood and verified, particularly in an industry where inaccurate data can have significant consequences. “The robot is not accountable. Humans are accountable,” he explained. “Never say ‘Claude gave me that number’ in a meeting. You need to know where every single number came from.”

As AI changes the work traditionally assigned to entry-level analysts, Langrick encouraged students to prepare for roles that will increasingly involve supervising AI outputs rather than simply completing routine tasks. Adaptability, technological fluency, ethical decision-making, and a strong understanding of financial fundamentals will remain essential— reinforcing that AI is most powerful when it amplifies, rather than replaces, human expertise.

KEY TAKEAWAYS Human Accountability is Essential AI is a powerful tool, but responsibility always lies with the professional. The Future is AI-Augmented Exposure to AI tools gives students a competitive advantage in the workforce. Ethics and Compliance Remain Core Every number must be verified; strong judgment is non-negotiable. Career Roles Are Evolving Analysts increasingly oversee AI workflows rather than routine tasks. Foundational Knowledge Endures Technology accelerates workflows, but critical thinking and financial fundamentals remain the key to success.
