O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home:

Under the shadow of your throne your saints have dwelt secure; sufficient is Thine arm alone, and our defense is sure.

Oh God, You are.

You are our help; You are our helper To all generations You will be Forever and ever.

Our shield, and our eternal hope, oh Lord You are the ancient of days And worthy of our praise.

Before the hills in order stood, or earth received its frame, from everlasting Thou are God, to endless years the same.

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be Thou our guard while life shall last, and our eternal home!

Oh God, You are.

You are our help; You are our helper To all generations You will be Forever and ever.

Our shield, and our eternal hope, oh Lord You are the ancient of days And worthy of our praise.

Oh God, You are. You are our help; You are our helper To all generations You will be Forever and ever.

Undergraduate students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher are eligible for graduation with honors. To qualify for honors, graduates must complete the last 60 hours in residence at Olivet or, in the case of Continuing Studies program graduates, have completed all required courses within their major at Olivet.

Gold cords signifying academic honors are partially underwritten by Phi Delta Lambda, the International Nazarene Honor Society.

Cum Laude (with honors) requires a grade point average of 3.50.

Magna Cum Laude (with high honors) requires a grade point average of 3.70.

Summa Cum Laude (with highest honors) requires a grade point average of 3.90.

Graduation with Departmental Honors is granted to seniors who complete a specially approved project of high quality in the major field of study. To qualify for Departmental Honors, a student must have a 3.5 grade point average in the major and must pass a comprehensive examination in the major field, with special emphasis on the honors project.

The Honors Program at Olivet Nazarene University serves to encourage and nurture academically talented students in the excellence of scholarship and integration of Christian faith. It aims to prepare students for servant leadership in the Church and the world. Students in the program complete four interdisciplinary core courses designed to consider the whole of liberal arts and foster faith integration. In the junior and senior years, they also complete an independent, faculty mentored research project that demonstrates originality. They present their research to the public during Scholar Week and submit it to Digital Commons upon completion.

The Dissertation of Distinction is awarded to graduates whose dissertation exemplifies doctoral level research and writing. Eligibility is determined through a juried evaluation of scholarly literature review, research methodology, professional writing, and compliance with program requirements. ■

Academic Origins: The philosopher Plato established a school of philosophy in ancient Athens called the “Academy,” named after a legendary Greek hero, Hecademus. The Academy continued in operation for several hundred years, and thus the terms “academy,” “academe” and “academic life” have long been associated with teaching and learning. The origin of the modern university can be traced to the 12th century and to the two outstanding seats of learning in Europe: Bologna and Paris. At Bologna, the jurist Irnerius introduced the “corpus juris civilis,” or study of law, to Europe; and in Paris, a group of masters, with the blessing of the Church, occupied themselves with the liberal arts and theology. The first English‑speaking school was Oxford in England, founded a millennium ago.

Degree Names: During the 13th century, a “scholar” attended lectures, a “bachelor” was capable of teaching, and a “master” — later termed “doctor” — was the highest designation and carried with it the obligation to lead the academic disciplines. Hence, modern students receive bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. The two‑year associate degree emerged more recently.

Robes: Since the early Middle Ages, academic robes were worn for warmth in damp and drafty medieval buildings. They were black to reflect egalitarian values in learning, that no discipline was more important than another. Learned clergy adopted these robes for the pulpit as well, a pattern remaining today among many mainline congregations. Distinctions are made, however, by their cut. Bachelor robes have long, pointed sleeves; master’s gowns feature closed slit sleeves; and doctor’s gowns have double belled sleeves with three velvet chevrons that are either black or colored like the lapels to represent their academic discipline.

Colors: The following colors are associated with degrees represented in academic processions:

Arts, Letters, Humanities – White

Dentistry – Lilac

Education – Light Blue

Fine Arts – Brown

Law – Purple

Medicine – Green

Nursing – Apricot

Philosophy – Dark Blue

Science – Golden Yellow

Theology – Scarlet

Commerce, Business, Accountancy – Drab

Economics – Copper

Engineering – Orange

Family and Consumer Sciences – Maroon

Library Science – Lemon

Music – Pink

Speech – Silver Gray

Physical Education – Sage Green

Social Science – Cream

Hood: The hood, which drapes over the back of the gown, is the most symbolic part of the academic regalia. Its length, width, color of trim and color or colors of lining denote the wearer’s highest academic achievement. The master’s hood is pointed; the doctor’s hood is long and bell‑shaped. The color of the border of the hood indicates the scholar’s major field of study; the lining color or colors identify the institution that conferred the wearer’s degree. Hoods were originally trimmed in fur, but now have satin borders for master’s and velvet for doctor’s.

Cap: The square cap, or mortarboard, dates back to the 13th century at the University of Paris. It came to England in Tudor times, was more rounded, and sometimes called the “Oxford” cap. Those who possess a doctoral degree may wear an eight‑sided tam, providing the institution granting the degree is more than 100 years old. Tassels are worn to the left side of the cap and are usually black or, in recent years, match the border of the hood to indicate the field of study. Doctoral tassels are

shorter than bachelor’s or master’s and are often gold metallic threads.

Chords, Pins: Some students wear long, thin, gold chords around their neck to symbolize academic honors by the host institution, while national academic disciplinary organizations occasionally provide small pins for students who meet broader standards of achievement. Artifacts are generally not worn to symbolize participation with a campus or disciplinary group, but achievement.

Mace: The chief academic officer or his designee leads the procession of faculty and students with the University Mace, a wooden scepter embossed in bronze with the university seal and topped by a flame. It symbolizes protection over academic virtue and scholarly conduct. In medieval times, mace bearers defended kings and generals from attack, but by the 14th century the mace was used for symbolic guardianship over civic dignitaries. The University of St. Andrews in Scotland was first among universities to adopt a mace in the 15th century. The United States Congress adopted one in 1814.

Medallion and Seal: University presidents often wear a medallion as a symbol of the office and their authority. ONU’s current Presidential Medallion was inaugurated in 2007, the Centennial Year. Made of bronze, the item most prominently features the University Seal with symbols: a dove in flight with olive branch (the Holy Spirit), a lit lamp (learning) and an open Bible (Scripture) with the cross (the Messiah). Along each chain link are bronze tabs bearing the name and years of service for preceding presidents of the institution. ■

Olivet Graduates,

On behalf of the Olivet Alumni Association, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to each and every one of you on reaching this significant milestone in your academic journey.

Your time at Olivet Nazarene University has been so much more than a pursuit of academic excellence. It has been a transformative experience to develop you personally, equip you for your professional career, and prepare you to live a life of service.

Through prayer, chapel services, classroom lectures, extracurricular activities, and fellowship with peers and mentors, you have grown intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. Your Olivet experience has equipped you with the skills necessary to make a real difference in the world and has provided a space for you to explore who God created you to be.

As you prepare to embark on the next chapter of your journey, I hope you carry with you the lessons you’ve learned and the memories you’ve cherished. Your alma mater will always be a part of who you are, and the bonds you’ve formed will continue to enrich your lives long after graduation.

My prayer for you in this next season is found in Romans 15:13. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Embrace every opportunity that comes your way with confidence, knowing that the God of hope is with you every step of the way.

Congratulations on your graduation, and I wish you all the best for a bright and successful future!

With pride and admiration,
