The ONU campus is alive with students in all four seasons of every year. While autumn signals the start of the traditional academic year, nearly every month of the calendar hosts master’s, doctorate and certificate program starting dates.

Dear Friends, In a world that often bombards us with negativity and uncertainty, the wisdom found in the Apostle Paul’s final thought to the Philippians offers a timeless invitation: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things” (Philippians 4:8).

In a message at College Church on the campus of Olivet Nazarene University several years ago now, Dr. Dennis Kinlaw expounded on this text. He invited us to step away from more trivial pursuits and become enamored with the ways, thoughts and character of our excellent God — to allow the Holy Spirit to assist us in “raising the level of our inner dialogue.”

This spring, we’ve chosen “Think On These Things” as the theme for our issue, not merely as a pleasant suggestion but as a transformative practice for our community. What we choose to dwell on shapes who we become. So much of our spiritual, emotional and intellectual development during the collegiate experience happens by a kind of ideological and behavioral osmosis. When we focus our attention on truth, nobility, righteousness, purity, loveliness and admirable things, we cultivate minds and hearts that reflect these very qualities.

Throughout these pages, you’ll find stories of Olivet students, faculty, alumni and friends who embody the essence of this Scripture in remarkable ways. From service initiatives bringing hope to local communities to academic achievements pushing the boundaries of excellence to artistic expressions capturing beauty in unexpected places — these stories remind us that we have countless reasons to celebrate what is good.

As you journey through this issue, we invite you to pause and reflect. How might your own thoughts be redirected toward what is excellent and praiseworthy? How might our Olivet community collectively shine as a beacon of what is noble and true in a world hungry for authentic goodness? As a reminder, our mission is to provide high-quality academic instruction for the purpose of personal development, career and professional readiness, and the preparation of individuals for lives of service to God and humanity. In the words of our 1915 University Catalog, “We seek the strongest scholarship and the deepest piety, knowing that they are thoroughly compatible (and) ... a Christian environment ... where not only knowledge but character is sought.”

The practice of “thinking on these things” doesn’t ignore life’s challenges; rather, it equips us to face them with grace, insight and hope. In this spirit, we present this spring issue as both inspiration and invitation — to renew our minds, to encourage one another and to live out the calling placed upon this Christ-centered community. There is one impeccable example who stands at the center of human history for all that is good and right: Jesus Christ!

FROM THE PRESIDENT This article is based on the chapel message “Love the Lord With Your Mind,” written and delivered by University President Gregg Chenoweth at Olivet Nazarene University, Jan. 9, 2025.

Some who share this planet with us are simply not like us, and we revere them for it.

Investors nicknamed Warren Buffet the “Oracle of Omaha” for his uncanny ability to see where the markets go before others. Today, he is worth $150 billion.

Elites decorate Yo-Yo Ma, the cellist, as the most important instrumentalist of our time. Little surprise the recent reopening of the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris featured his solo performance.

Hollywood tycoons were so impressed by physicist Stephen Hawking’s seminal insights they put his life on the silver screen in The Theory of Everything.

These icons are not just successful. They are geniuses!

Darrin McMahon explains their prowess in his book Divine Fury: A History of Genius. We see talent in a marksman who hits a target every time, but a genius hits a target others can’t see. Pixar did this for animation. Apple did this with iTunes. NVIDIA is doing it right now in AI. Here is a good question: What could make a university genius? Students would have to be coached to see beyond the obvious, to aim for a target others never consider. Most suffer from a poverty of imagination and choose a college to help them align with a mere job. That’s just an exchange of time for cash. Other schools make stability No. 1 by coaching students toward a long career — a string of jobs in the same industry.

FROM THE PRESIDENT Hardly any schools prime their students to do personal inventory and spiritual seeking to discover what God made us for, then do it. That’s a calling: spiritual, invisible, a target most don’t see. At Olivet, that’s our potential for genius.

decade, and more than 50 higher learning institutions now populate the globe. A Christian university is where we take Paul’s admonishment very seriously to prepare one another “for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17).

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”

Matthew 22:37

One way we fulfill this really big idea is to teach the Scripture in Matthew 22:37: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” I’m all for heart and soul! An intellectualized faith void of heart is incomplete and, in some expressions, even dangerous. But believers are just as lopsided if their triumph is only deepheartedness, in neglect of mind.

I think this is why Charles Malik, Lebanon’s first ambassador to the U.N., wrote in his book The Two Tasks: “The problem is not only to win souls but save minds. If you win the whole world but lose the mind of the world, you indeed will discover you’ve not won the world. The greatest danger is anti-intellectualism.

All our ills stem from false philosophies let loose in the world. How can evangelism speak to the world if it is not already intellectualized?”

So, yes, love God with your mind! This makes us durable, not double-minded, not duped by the distractions of the world. A mindful Christian enjoys clarity and conviction from “aiming at what others cannot see.” This puts them on the pathway of the best type of genius.

Little wonder that throughout history, wherever the Gospel went, schools followed. In our own tribe of Nazarenes, 10 schools were founded in the first

Academic domains of study become good works when they articulate God’s purpose in them.

Study becomes discipleship. At Olivet, we expose our students to any idea made legitimate by the standards of an academic discipline, then advocate what the Christian faith prefers about that.

We aim for strong scholarship with deep piety. We encourage students to follow their curiosity, unafraid of what they find. But in this freedom, we caution them to proceed on the firm foundations of the authority of Scripture and the trustworthy guidance of the Church.

As president of this university, I don’t overestimate my influence on anyone. But I’m willing to use my platform for this: I call our students to intellectual ambition and excellence. We can fulfill the charge of Jesus: Love the Lord your God with your mind.

Alumna Dr. Teresa Woodruff Receives National Medal of Science “The email you have is real,” said the caller to Dr. Teresa Woodruff ’85 on Sept. 30, 2024. “This is a staff member from the White House. President Biden is awarding you with the National Medal of Science.”

It’s a phone call Dr. Woodruff will always remember.

On Jan. 3, 2025, President Joe Biden honored Dr. Woodruff with the National Medal of Science at the White House in Washington, D.C. For 65 years, the president of the United States has bestowed the National Medal of Science on those deserving of special recognition for their outstanding contributions to science in service to the United States. This medal was established by Congress in 1959 and is administered by the U.S. National Science Foundation.

Dr. Woodruff is recognized as a luminary in reproductive science for reshaping the landscape of fertility and reproductive care. Her research in ovarian biology, fertility preservation and the health of young cancer survivors has made her a leader in improving women’s reproductive health worldwide.

“This award represents the best of what my students, collaborators and I have done together,” Dr. Woodruff says. “Fundamental discoveries in science have a real impact on patients’ lives, and our work is helping tomorrow’s patients to be treated better than today’s. This award brings attention to the reproductive sciences as we continue to increase the understanding of the male and female reproductive systems. It’s especially rewarding to know that our nation values the work that doesn’t usually appear in the headlines.”

Roots of Learning and Research at ONU Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Woodruff has continually credited her parents and her education at Olivet Nazarene University for providing the foundation for her professional growth. Her father, the late Dr. William Woodruff, served as a professor in ONU’s theology department. Her mother, Wanda (Shuck) Woodruff ’73 M.A.E., inspired her interest in science. continued >

“When I was in third grade, my mom was a first grade teacher,” Dr. Woodruff recalls. “She led a summer camp for children from her school district on ONU’s campus.

I remember the experiments she did with the kids, and that was my earliest introduction to the sciences. I am so grateful for her impact on the direction of my life and on my brothers, Bruce and Neal.”

Dr. Bruce Woodruff is a 1987 ONU graduate. Dr. Neal Woodruff ’91 is associate dean of ONU’s School of Music.

As a biology major at ONU from 1981 to 1985, Dr. Woodruff admired and was influenced by Dr. Larry Ferrin, her biochemistry professor; Dr. John Hanson ’57, one of her chemistry professors; and Dr. Richard Colling ’76, her biology professor and the department chair. Additionally, two highly influential professors in her education were Dr. Matthew Airhart, conductor of the University Orchestra, and professor William Woodruff, from whom she took New Testament and was grateful to call Dad. “Dr. Steve Taylor, another of my chemistry professors, introduced me to the discipline of research during a summer research experience at California Institute of Technology in 1984,” Dr. Woodruff recalls. “That was my first experience of anything associated with research and finding answers.”

She graduated summa cum laude from ONU and was named the recipient of the Maggie Sloan Crawford Award, the highest award given to a graduating senior. In 2012 and 2024, she delivered the ONU commencement address. In 2016 she received the “O” Award, the highest honor given to ONU alumni.

Career Path Develops With Many Achievements

Dr. Woodruff earned advanced degrees at Northwestern. She did postdoctoral work at Genentech, Inc., where she contributed to the early development of currently approved human recombinant drugs.

In 1995 she began her academic career at Northwestern University as a professor and served there in various teaching, research and leadership positions until 2020. In 2020 she became the provost, followed by interim president from 2022 to 2024 at Michigan State University (MSU). She is now MSU’s President Emerita and also serves as an MSU Research Foundation Professor in the Department

My education provided these fundamental building blocks that have made me who I am today, and I am eternally grateful.” of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at the College of Human Medicine and in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the College of Engineering.

Dr. Woodruff founded the field of oncofertility and invented clinical practice management strategies that merged two fields: oncology and fertility. This specialty provides fertility-sparing or preservation options for young people with fertility-threatening conditions, including cancer treatments, through the development of physician guidelines, patient awareness and education materials, and a comprehensive bench-to-bedside research portfolio that is advancing the understanding of ovarian follicle function.

Dr. Woodruff has also worked to find novel ways to reduce attrition of women from the STEM fields.

She created the Women’s Health Science Program for High School Girls & Beyond to provide science education programs for female students in grades 9–12 in the Chicago Public Schools.

MOST NOTABLE PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS Research involving live births in mice from in vitrogrown ovarian follicles was named the most important breakthrough of the decade 1998 to 2008 by Nature Medicine.

Creating the Oncofertility Consortium through a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Interdisciplinary Roadmap Grant. Oncofertility is now a globally recognized medical discipline with insurance and reimbursement available to patients and providers in many states and countries.

Three independent discoveries from her lab cited as “Discoveries of the Year” by Discover Magazine and one cited by the Chinese Academy of Medicine.

Brilla, Shine.FM’s Spanish-speaking station, has been sharing the message of Jesus Christ for over a decade. What began as a vision from Brian Utter ’91 and 12 bilingual Olivet students has grown into a global ministry. Now, Brilla is expanding beyond radio to plant a new church.

Demetri Morris ’20, founder and CEO of MORR, has been named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for marketing and advertising.

Marcello Fretes and Vivianna Perez, former missionaries and Brilla morning show hosts, recently relocated to the U.S. as Brilla’s program director and director of Spanish ministries, respectfully. Through various connections, the team received the former St. Anne Baptist Church property to launch Iglesia 1 Church, a bilingual, multicultural congregation.

His entrepreneurial journey began at Olivet Nazarene University, where he built a freelance business that evolved into MORR, a company focused on humanizing brands. Grounded in faith, Demetri credits mentors and community support for his success.

Opening on Easter Sunday, the church will also serve as an immigration connection center. With this new step, Shine.FM and Brilla look forward to continued impact.

MORR has partnered with industry leaders such as Adidas, Chick-fil-A, Uber and Ekso Bionics, helping them build trust and stand out in a crowded digital landscape.

“Brilla is a tool that connects people to the Word of God,” Utter said.

The future of his business looks bright, as Demetri is committed to mentoring future innovators, encouraging students to pursue their ideas boldly. He recently returned to Olivet for the Createur Conference & Pitch Competition, where he advised aspiring entrepreneurs.

College Church and Olivet Alumni Share Stories of Faithfulness College Church of the Nazarene, located on Olivet Nazarene University’s campus, has released two inspirational books: Senior Moments: Reflections on God’s Faithfulness and Celebrating God’s Goodness. These collections highlight the testimonies of senior adults, many of whom are Olivet alumni or former employees, showcasing God’s enduring presence.

Pastor Jesse Spencer, senior adult minister, led the project, inspired by Deuteronomy’s call to share God’s works with future generations.

“Our prayer is that these stories of the goodness of God will allow you to see the world in a more beautiful light,” he wrote.

Tuck Everlasting In February, the musical Tuck Everlasting, a collaboration presented by the Olivet Nazarene University School of Music and theatre program, delighted audiences.

“One of the most interesting parts of this production process is that this is really the first production we’ve had with an almost complete production team, which means that not only are students the ones performing, but they are also filling behindthe-scenes leadership roles,” said Kelis Davis 19/’22 MBA, ONU Theatre Director. “This is exciting because we’re getting really close to operating like a professional theatre company would. Many of the students have their sights set on technical theatre careers, so it’s been exciting to see them become very committed to these roles.”

Stage productions are definitely a “group effort,” said freshman Jacob Schindler, who played Angus Tuck.

“The ensemble makes the show — and ensemble doesn’t necessarily mean ‘backup dancers,’” he said. “The ensemble is the whole cast and the whole crew. Acting is reacting. I take what I’m given by the ensemble, and I give it back to them.”

VP Pence Shares Journey of Faith

Vice President Mike Pence delivered a message of faith and servant leadership during his visit to Olivet Nazarene University on March 13. During chapel, the former vice president presented senior Anna Shoup with the inaugural Pence Endowment Scholarship for Law. In his address to the student body, he encouraged students to “be men and women of integrity” and emphasized that principled stands bring opposition.

Following his address, Pence engaged with political science and ROTC students in an intimate coffee discussion, sharing personal reflections on his faith journey in politics and public service. The visit concluded with a private luncheon involving Olivet and community leaders, where former vicepresident Pence praised Olivet as “a principled Christian university known around the country.”

“Always be prepared to give a reason for the hope that you have — but do so with gentleness and respect,” he said, quoting Scripture.

Women in the Word: Senior Bible Study Equips Graduates for Lifelong Faith

ONU Receives Reaffirmation of Accreditation from Higher Learning Commission

This spring, Olivet Nazarene University First Lady Tammy (Slayer) Chenoweth ’89 is hosting a fourweek Bible study for 60 senior women, fostering spiritual growth and community as they prepare for life beyond Olivet. Using plans from She Reads Truth, a company co-founded by Raechel Myers ’05, participants explore Scripture, share in discussion and deepen their faith.

The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Institutional Actions Council has reaffirmed Olivet Nazarene University’s accreditation, with the next review set for 2034–2035. The University successfully met all HLC criteria and sub-components “with no concerns,” according to the accreditation team’s opinion document.

“We want these girls to be women in the Word every day after graduation,” Tammy said.

The study will conclude with a special event featuring Raechel and offering encouragement for the seniors’ faith journeys.

For centuries, academics have written about the transformative power of a liberal arts education for both the individual and society. The ancient Greeks pursued a liberal — or broad — education because it “liberated” the mind, making people more active and effective citizens. Our country’s founders, such as John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, viewed a liberal arts education as essential to freedom and a healthy democratic republic.

More recently, in Beyond the University, historian Michael Roth argued that a liberal arts education “matters” because it helps us “think for ourselves, take responsibility for our beliefs and actions, and become better acquainted with our own desires, our own hopes.” His book is a defense of the liberal arts, which of late have come under criticism by policy leaders who advocate for a more purely vocational curriculum. Public debates aside, those who have graduated with a liberal arts degree can attest to the power of literature, art, history, economics, biology or theology to expand our intellectual horizons, significantly changing how we see ourselves, others and the world.

Olivet Nazarene University’s founders understood all of that, too. In the early 20th century, many Christian universities were established, and most began as Bible colleges — but not Olivet. Our original charter application to the State of Illinois was for an institution that would “encourage, promote, maintain, and support Christian education in all its branches, such as ancient and modern languages, science, art, music, philosophy, mathematics, history, including all subjects in colleges or universities, also Bible study and theology, especially the doctrine of entire sanctification as a work of divine grace.” The devout farmers and small business owners — laymen, not clergy — who founded the school that became Olivet were not afraid of the academy, scholarship, research or the implications of science and the humanities for their Wesleyan faith. Rather, they acknowledged the power of a liberal arts education, embraced it and then determined to fuse it with the far greater power of the Gospel, believing that the combination of the two held the promise of transforming and redeeming the world, one graduate at a time.

This continues to be why Olivet exists today: sending Christian-educated nurses, musicians, social workers, journalists, historians, business owners, engineers, scientists, teachers, missionaries, pastors, among many others, to minister in a lost and hurting world.

The first sentence of the University’s mission statement found in offices and hallways around campus declares, “Olivet Nazarene University, a denominational university in the Wesleyan tradition, exists to provide a university-level liberal arts Education with a Christian Purpose.” The last five words have served as our motto for generations and are what separate Olivet from other private or public

schools that offer liberal arts degrees. Sadly, today’s headlines contain plenty of examples of how higher education may be used to advance values or policies rooted in secularist, humanist and political ideologies that also have power to transform individuals and society, albeit in ways that are not always true, noble or admirable. But Olivet offers something better.

The devout farmers and small business owners ... who founded the school that became Olivet were not afraid of the academy, scholarship, research or the implications of science and the humanities for their Wesleyan faith. Rather, they acknowledged the power of a liberal arts education, embraced it and then determined to fuse it with the far greater power of the Gospel.

Critical thinking, imagination, doubt and challenges to conformity, for example, have always been hallmarks of a good liberal arts education — methods or tools by which students mature intellectually and spiritually. At secular institutions, these can often lead a students own a path of unmoored skepticism, arrogance, moral relativism or disillusionment. By contrast, at Olivet these intellectual tools are put to a Christian purpose, illustrating the words of the Apostle Paul: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — His good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:1–2).

Roth concludes that a liberal art s education helps us “retain impressions of the world around us and retain our relationships with other people — that is, we develop habits that help us navigate in the world.”

I agree, and that makes it even more important that such lifetime habits are formed on a Christian campus.

At Olivet the transformative power of a liberal arts education is brought into alignment with our Wesleyan faith. Whether in chapel, history class, science lab or during a casual conversation with a professor on a tree-lined sidewalk, Olivet points students upward to the wisdom of Scripture: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things” (Philippians 4:8).

Dr. Stephen Lowe ’88 is the vice president for academic affairs, the director of the University Honors Program and a professor of American history at Olivet Nazarene University. An academic, a historian and a champion for the liberal arts, he is the author of books including Sir Walter and Mr. Jones: Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, and the Rise of American Golf, which won the 2000 USGA International Book Award. He also has contributed shorter works to a wide variety of academic and popular periodicals, including the Journal of Sports History, Golf World and Golf Magazine. In addition to a bachelor’s degree in history education from Olivet, he holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in American history from Ohio University.

Students who study art at Olivet Nazarene University have the opportunity to explore a variety of media. The Sims Center provides dedicated space for painting, sculpture, photography, graphic design and more. It also houses a gallery and a theatre.

making art from the everyday

ONU art professor Mary Beth Koszut helps her students recognize that mistakes and failures can become moments of significance.

“That’s what I’m doing in this process,” professor Koszut says, explaining her latest art series.

Mommy Monsters is a series of surrealist pieces on the frustrations and joys of motherhood, some of which have been recently exhibited on campus and at the Union Street Gallery in Chicago Heights.

“I’m taking the idea of spills or mistakes and making meaning from them,” she says.

Professor Koszut, who studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has taught art and art education courses at Olivet in the Department of Art and Digital Media since 2012, says this latest project was inspired by a session at the National Art Education Association that focused on balancing teaching with creating. Often, art educators feel torn between the demands of teaching art and producing art.

“It’s especially challenging for moms,” professor Koszut adds. “At the time, my kids were toddlers and my art had shifted to the margins of my time. I was asking myself, ‘How am I still creating, still pursuing art?’”

The answer, she says, came in the everyday experiences of mothering.

“I started working with literal spills, failed drawings and leftover paint,” she says.

The result was a shift from the large, abstract oil pieces on canvas she had created in the past. These new pieces are smaller, each only 5 x 7 inches, and created in watercolor, gouache and colored pencils.

The images are at once haunting and whimsical, evoking the everyday experiences of motherhood in dynamic surrealist vistas.

“Sometimes, students think their work has to be perfect, and this can be paralyzing,” professor Koszut explains. “But there’s a challenge and a reward in working with your mistakes.”

The materials she used for this particular series, for example, are especially unforgiving.

“I really went down a rabbit hole on that one,” professor Koszut says, explaining the significance of the specific corals and sea life portrayed in the painting. “It’s about the sacrifices of motherhood — but also the balance between holding on and letting go.”

Motherhood is the theme of an upcoming exhibition at Olivet’s Victorian House Gallery, which will feature professor Koszut’s work as well as that of other artists from across the country.

For professor Koszut, the process of creating art goes hand in hand with shaping the next generation of artists and art educators. It’s important, she emphasizes to her students through her teaching and her own creative process, to honor “being where you are, using everyday experiences as fuel for your own artwork.”

“I’ll spill paint on the page and force myself to work within that constraint,” she says.

When asked whether Mommy Monsters is completed, professor Koszut admits she’s not sure.

“I think it will always be evolving, but I’m continuing work that focuses on motherhood,” she says.

Her latest piece is a return to working on largescale panels inspired by the mothering instincts of octopuses. Some octopuses will stay with their eggs until they hatch, after which the mother octopus dies.

Reason and Faith speaking together Dr. Daniel Allen ’10 realized he wanted to be a college professor while studying to become something else.

“My plan was to go into pastoral ministry,” he explains.

“But as part of an M.Div. program at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, I taught a Sunday school class for high schoolers on faith and culture. And I realized this is what I want to do with my life.”

He contacted Dr. Kent Olney, a professor he had worked for as a teaching assistant while a student at Olivet Nazarene University. Dr. Olney recommended he pursue graduate work in sociology.

“I knew I wanted to teach, but I didn’t think I would become a researcher,” he says.

That changed during his Ph.D. program at Baylor University. Now as an assistant professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at Olivet, Dr. Allen equips students to grapple with some of today’s most difficult questions.

“I love it here,” he says. “Every day I get to talk about the things that are important in the world.”

As a missionary kid, Dr. Allen was raised in Germany, where his parents were active with Campus Crusade for Christ. They worked behind the Iron Curtain and in Hungary before returning to the United States, where Dr. Allen finished high school in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended Olivet as a political science and history major with a sociology minor, playing on the basketball team

and studying abroad his junior year in Egypt as part of the Middle East Studies Program. Citing the influence of professors like Dr. Olney and Dr. David Van Heemst ’96 M.P.C./’98 M.A., Dr. Allen calls his time at Olivet transformational.

“Christian higher education provides a space for reason and faith to speak together,” he explains.

“If places like Olivet don’t exist, the Church loses a profound and prophetic voice in culture. The alternative is to either go along with today’s zeitgeist of expressive individualism or become an interest group aligned with a particular sociopolitical agenda.”

At Olivet, Dr. Allen met his wife, Laura (Kirst) ’11, a math education major, member of the volleyball team and student in Olivet’s first Honors Program cohort.

After marriage, they lived for two years in Jackson, Mississippi, where Laura worked for Teach for America teaching in the Jackson Public School District. They then spent a year teaching English in South Korea before beginning graduate school, Dr. Allen at Trinity and Laura at the University of Illinois Chicago, where she completed a Master of Public Administration

degree. It was while teaching Sunday school at Trinity that Dr. Allen realized studying sociology might be where God was leading him.

“I was passionate about the kinds of questions sociology asks, and I didn’t see a lot of Christians active in that field,” he says. “It seemed like there was a discouraging duality: You could either be a sociologist or a Christian. I wasn’t satisfied by that. I wanted to know: Can I follow the scientific method, follow the facts and still be faithful to the truths of Christianity?”

Part of this, he acknowledges, was his upbringing as a missionary kid.

“I saw from my experiences abroad that the truths of Christianity transcend national and cultural contexts,” he says. “Sociology helps untangle where we mistake cultural realities for the fundamentals of our faith.”

Dr. Allen currently teaches classes in Sociology of the Family, Ethnic Relations, Urban and Rural Sociology, and Research Methods. Laura works part time for the Success Sequence Program, which provides Illinois schools with character-based health curriculum, and together they are raising their three children: Kaya (6), Levi (4) and Avery (2).

Dr. Allen speaks about his hope for his students in terms of equipping.

“At its core, sociology is about putting yourself in someone else’s shoes,” he says. “I want our students to see the spirit in which we do that and be equipped to do it well. I want them to recognize they can face the hardest questions society asks them with the realization that their faith offers something profound to say in response.”

In terms of his own research, he is eager to bring students along in projects applying sociological research and analysis in service of the local community.

“I want to serve the community,” he says. “And I want to help the Olivet community ask questions about itself. I could be happy doing this another 40 years.”

The School of Education at Olivet Nazarene University has gone through many organizational changes and titles over the years, but its intention to provide quality teaching instruction has remained steadfast.

In 1921 the Department of Education at Olivet was formalized, paving the way for more than 100 years of engaging teacher education programs.

Over that century, the role of a teacher has expanded significantly, with new responsibilities related to technology integration, data analysis and differentiated instruction. Even in the midst of drastic changes to the K–12 education sector in the past decade, the faculty and staff of Olivet’s School of Education have stayed committed to ensuring that teacher candidates are adequately prepared to become effective educators and child development professionals who can likewise adapt to the evolving educational landscape.

Teaching professionals are often expected to collaborate with colleagues and participate in professional learning communities, using digital platforms to share resources and strategies. Olivet’s teacher preparation program equips candidates with the tools, methods and expectations required to navigate these changes.

Additionally, the School of Education prepares teacher candidates for increasing administrative tasks — such as documenting student data and managing classroom technologies — that are now essential to the teaching profession.

“One of the most noticeable changes has been the shift toward student-centered teaching approaches,” says Dr. Lance Kilpatrick ’02, associate dean for the School of Education. “In contrast to the traditional model, where the teacher is the primary source of knowledge, the focus has now moved to promoting active learning, critical thinking and student autonomy. This approach has led our teacher candidates to increasingly incorporate projects and real-world problems into their lessons, engaging students in deeper learning.”

During the 2024-2025 academic year, the School of Education enrolled 366 traditional undergraduate students and 200 graduate-level students — representing a strong interest in the field of education, which bodes well for current and future generations of young students who will be impacted by well-trained educators.

Spectrum of Learning

In addition to the 12 undergraduate majors that are offered by the School of Education in a traditional onground format (including cross-listed subject-specific majors such as music, art or math education), Olivet offers two online bachelor’s degree programs: early childhood and child development.

The School of Education also offers a robust range of graduate degrees and certificate programs, including the Doctor of Education: Ethical Leadership.

This unique multidisciplinary degree is designed for current educators who want to expand their leadership potential in their present roles or who want to transition to administrative positions.

In 2014 Olivet launched the special education program in response to the increasing need for wellequipped special education teachers. The program also focuses on training future educators to embrace inclusive practices and provide differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including those with disabilities. In general, Olivet is committed to preparing teacher candidates to educate, include and support students who come from a wide spectrum of socioeconomic circumstances.

“With a growing awareness of systemic inequalities in education, Olivet is making concerted efforts to create more inclusive environments that celebrate diverse learning styles, cultural backgrounds and

abilities,” says Dr. Kilpatrick. “This shift is evident in our program as we prepare candidates to design inclusive curricula. The faculty have deepened their understanding of what it means to be a culturally responsive institution. Our teacher candidates are guided to incorporate diverse perspectives and resources into their lessons, promoting cultural awareness and ensuring all students feel represented.”

For how thoroughly the School of Education continues to evolve in response to changes in K–12 education, the school remains grounded in its goal to provide teacher preparation through a Biblical lens.

“We believe that strong educators are not only effective in the classroom but also rooted in faith,” says Dr. Kilpatrick. “Our teacher candidates are encouraged to grow both in their faith and in their teaching abilities, fostering a holistic approach to education. By integrating Biblical principles with educational practice, we prepare our candidates to be strong educators and witnesses of their faith, shaping students’ lives with both academic knowledge and Christ-centered values.”

Top of Its Class

Olivet’s teacher education program is a recognized education preparation program by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), in consultation with the State Educator Preparation and Licensure Board. Each teaching program that is offered at Olivet has been individually approved for licensure, meaning that when teaching candidates graduate with a teaching degree, they will also have earned an Illinois Professional Educator License. The School of Education continues to update existing programs to meet and exceed the ISBE standards and is aligned with the top educational preparation standards in the nation.

One exceptional feature of the School of Education is the variety of specialized K–12 programs, many of which are not commonly found at other institutions. These programs provide a broad range of teaching certifications for candidates looking to work in specific disciplines.

Additionally, Olivet offers a unique driver’s education endorsement program for teachers who are interested in helping young teenagers learn how to drive, offering a specialized path that many institutions do not provide.

Olivet has also offered a Bachelor of Science degree in child development since 1989. Currently, the degree is available in both a traditional and online format. This program of study prepares students for careers that provide holistic care to young children and their families, with a specific focus on birth to second grade. In addition, the degree helps prepare students for graduate school admissions for specialized work as a pediatric speech therapist, occupational therapist, developmental therapist or child life specialist.

The relatively new profession of a child life specialist blends elements of child development, education and social work to help young children and their support system cope with big changes, particularly in a hospital environment. In addition to seemingly nonsensical activities like blowing bubbles which can help distract a patient during an IV procedure, these specialists often assist a care team by breaking down confusing medical jargon into developmentally appropriate language and leading young patients in therapeutic art and play interventions that often include medical equipment such as syringes, art supplies and teaching dolls. The goal is to reduce the fear and anxiety surrounding medical procedures.

Passion and Purpose

As the departmental leader, Dr. Kilpatrick finds that the motto guides his approach to both teaching and his administrative work.

“First, it emphasizes the importance of developing professionals — educators who are not only knowledgeable but also skilled in applying their expertise with high standards,” he says. “We focus on providing rigorous, practical training through field experiences and student teaching that will equip our candidates with the dispositions and the tools they need to be effective teachers in various classrooms.”

He continues, “Second, ‘Influencing Lives’ underscores the deeper, relational aspect of teaching. It reminds us that the work we do is about much more than delivering content; it’s about shaping the hearts and minds of the next generation.

Our responsibility is to instill our faith values of compassion, integrity and respect and to inspire students to pursue their full potential. In guiding the department, I am committed to fostering an environment that encourages reflection, collaboration and service.”

Early Scholars Program Provides Benefits Beyond Just College Credit Freshman Owen Marcukaitis knows a good value when he sees one. And that’s not just because he is a double major in accounting and finance. Owen grew up in Bourbonnais and was very familiar with Olivet Nazarene University. His dad works in Benner Library, and Owen loosely considered it as an option for college. But it wasn’t until he learned about the Early Scholars program from some older high school friends that Owen really accounted for how enrolling at the University might personally benefit him.

The Early Scholars program is designed to allow academically qualified high school students to dual enroll at Olivet and their local high school — to gain college credits through the former and to satisfy graduation requirements of the latter. For many students, the dual enrollment is heavily subsidized by both Olivet and the student’s high school, creating an accessible avenue for students to build their college transcript before they cross the stage to receive their high school diploma.

“The Early Scholars program is such a unique opportunity for students to get a head start on their college journey,” says Tiffany Holohan, Early Scholars program director. “It’s not just about earning credits. It’s about exploring interests, building confidence and stepping into their post-high school college experience with a support system already in place.”

The summer following his sophomore year at Bradley Bourbonnais Community High School (BBCHS), Owen enrolled in his first collegiate course: an online general education course to test the waters.

“I was super nervous about it,” he reflects. “But when I got into it, I realized it was only a little step up from high school.”

During his junior fall semester at BBCHS, Owen enrolled in four more classes at Olivet — a pattern he would follow for the remainder of his high school experience. The bulk of his academic load during his junior and senior years of high school were collegelevel courses, but he still played in the BBCHS band and participated in multiple sports, math team and Scholastic Bowl with his high school classmates.

“It was definitely intimidating to sit in classes with college students at first,” Owen says. “But after the first two weeks, I realized everyone was just a student. I also had a group of friends who were Early Scholars, so I didn’t feel like I was alone in the experience. We would hang out between classes. But it also wasn’t hard to make new friends on campus; you just had to be intentional.”

By the time he enrolled at Olivet as a full-time first-year student, Owen had completed 78 hours of credit, which technically classified him as a second-semester junior. However, accounting majors at Olivet are encouraged to take 150 hours of course credit, as it is a requirement for anyone who wants to sit for the Certified Public Accountant Exam. For most students, that would mean taking 18 hours each semester or extending to a fifth year.

“By doing Early Scholars, I knew I could extend college a bit,” Owen says of his interest in the dual enrollment program. “There was less pressure to know what I wanted to do right away. You do lose a little bit of time at the high school, but you also unlock the college life.

Early Scholars opened up my college experience and shaped it in ways that other college students can’t do.”

One benefit to expanding a young student’s collegiate experience is that the early exposure to college-level courses provides time and space to explore through academics. Owen changed his major four times before he actually enrolled at Olivet, which isn’t uncommon for students as they examine which area of study most resonates with their interests and as they develop career goals.

Now that he has shifted to being fully immersed in life at Olivet, his connections have expanded through his participation in the student-managed Investment Club and filing taxes for the community through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Because he had already earned half the credits required to graduate, some of the academic pressure to max out each semester schedule has been lifted.

“Watching students like Owen grow through the Early Scholars program is incredibly rewarding,” Tiffany says of the program.

“Students come in unsure, maybe a little nervous, but they leave with a clear direction, a network of friends and an academic head start that can make a huge difference in their future careers.”

Owen will spend the fall 2025 semester studying abroad at Oxford University in England. The humanities-oriented classes he takes there won’t support his major degree requirements but will diversify his overall academic and career preparation. Accounting majors are required to complete at least one internship during their undergraduate experience, and Owen has already secured a highly sought-after position at one of the Big Four accounting firms, KPMG. He will complete the internship in summer 2026 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“I applied to well over 40 places and got more than 30 rejections without even an interview,” Owen reflects. “It was a bit soul-crushing to get the rejections; you start thinking you’re not good enough.

But my interview with KPMG was totally different. It wasn’t just about them thinking I could do the work; I felt valued as a person too.”

Owen has profited from more time for social and academic activities than what is typically possible for an accounting major. He added a Spanish minor and has continued to work as a library services assistant in Benner Library — a job he started three years ago as an Early Scholar. He also works as a lifeguard at the Perry Student Life and Recreation Center.

“Working on campus in addition to taking classes and balancing high school requirements was a huge step up in time management for me,” Owen says. “I had to really learn how to prioritize things and when to make sacrifices with time or opportunities. Fortunately, all of my teachers, professors and coaches were really understanding and supported me.”

Reflecting on the opportunities that have already been afforded to him in his three years as an Olivet student and looking forward to more to come, Owen encourages others to see the value in the Early Scholars program.

“Why not?” he says. “Try it out at least for a semester. You have nothing to lose and so much to gain.”

We are preparing child life specialists, developmental therapists, pediatric occupational therapists, speech therapists, early learning teachers, care providers and many others for the unique ways they will care for our world’s children and families.”

Now in the final stages of her Ph.D. program with her degree expected in 2025, professor Chorak is looking forward to reaching this finish line in her career. Her doctoral research has focused on the power of play, a truly universal language that can repair and heal. She stresses the importance of connection and play for children, teens and families in the post-pandemic era.

Her dream is that in the near future, all early childhood locations (homes, child care, classrooms, school districts, restaurants, child and family state/federal laws, churches, parks, etc.) are developmentally appropriate and truly set up for all the developmental needs of growing children.

Potential brain development for the child and health for society depend on the quality of each child’s life, especially from birth to 8 years old.

“My hope for all who care and work with young children is that they remember the tremendous importance of their calling,” professor Chorak says.

“They must be committed to understanding the complexities of human development, promoting resiliency in the face of societal adversities and supporting families. In a world that often presents chaos and uncertainty, the importance of quality childcare and dedication to helping children and families is priceless.”

Kristin Mathews

Program Coordinator, Elementary Education Assistant Professor, School of Education Degrees and Certifications: Bachelor of Arts, Elementary Education Master of Arts in Educational Leadership National Board-Certified Teacher in English Language Arts for Early Adolescence (NBCT) Professor Kristin Mathews is completing her Ed.D. in curriculum and teaching, expected in May. Her research focuses on “The Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards and Their Implementation in Higher Education Teacher Preparation Programs at Predominantly White Institutions.” She is also a leader in Illinois’ statewide initiative for developing a pipeline to include underrepresented and minority teachers in the school systems.

“My research has helped guide ONU’s School of Education in developing and strengthening key community partnerships with our surrounding Kankakee County organizations like the Kankakee Public Library and Youth for Christ,” professor Mathews says. “I have also used my research to identify and implement more sustainable ways for the School of Education to align programming even more with best practices for training preservice teachers for culturally responsive teaching in an increasingly diverse K–12 school system.”

During her doctoral studies and research, professor Mathews has discovered that the School of Education faculty and students understand and embrace the call to model themselves after the Master Teacher, Jesus.

Faculty members are uniquely positioned to implement Illinois’ Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards to train this population of preservice teachers in strategies that improve achievement for more diverse student populations.

“The core components of ONU’s conceptual framework are based on Christ-centered character and a foundational implementation of best practices, which have helped with implementation,” she says. “I hope my research highlights that, regardless of the demographic makeup of an institution, it is possible to prepare preservice teachers to honor the culture and diversity of the students God allows them to teach.”

Assistant Professor, School of Education Degrees and Certifications: Bachelor of Science in Education, Elementary Education Master of Science in Education, Special Education Master of Science in Educational Leadership Professional Educator License, Elementary Education, Learning Behavior Specialist I and Principal Endorsements Certified Teacher Evaluator, Illinois State Board of Education Professor Tonya Peterson is completing her Ed.D. in interdisciplinary leadership in higher education, expected in May. Her doctoral dissertation, “Faculty Perceptions of Neurodiverse College Students,” provided her with the opportunity to examine — through qualitative interviews — how faculty perceive neurodiverse students and the neurodiversity-affirming practices they use.

“Special education, students with disabilities and issues of social justice have always been important work to me,” professor Peterson says.

“My dream is to see all neurodiverse students at ONU, as well as all ONU students, faculty and staff who have disabilities, know that they are loved and valued.”

Professor Peterson’s doctoral research focused on ways to foster a sense of belonging for marginalized populations, including students with disabilities. Her goal is to help students acknowledge their disabilities and develop a positive disability identity. She wants to see the culture shift so that a person who is neurodiverse can focus not on the challenges and barriers of neurodiversity but on the blessings and strengths of having a unique way to think and view the world.

“I think that ONU is the perfect place to begin to shift that paradigm,” professor Peterson says. “This is a place that sees all of us as created in the image of God, and all of us deserve to belong. My dissertation focuses on making this truth a stepping stone to social change and increased equity for neurodiverse college students on a campus where God is invited to lead the way.”

Mary Peeken

Licensure Officer and Adjunct Professor, School of Education Degrees and Certifications: Bachelor of Arts, Elementary Education Master of Arts in Education Doctor of Education, Educational Psychology Dr. Mary Peeken ’04, ’06 M.A.E., licensure officer and adjunct professor, defended her dissertation in December 2024 for her Ed.D. in educational psychology. Dr. Peeken conducted research surrounding the national teacher shortage and factors related to educators who are leaving the field.

She began her doctoral journey in fall 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic began. During her research, she discovered that many of the educators she interviewed for the study emphasized dramatic changes in student engagement and performance after students returned to full-time on-ground learning. Major themes for their departure, which she identified during her research, included a lack of disciplinary and behavior support, ineffective leadership, declining parental involvement, increased workload and lack of respect.

“I walk with ONU’s education students as they journey through their program majors,” Dr. Peeken says. “I meet them as freshmen in my Human Development classes and then continue with them as I arrange for their student teaching placement, degree conferral and licensure with the Illinois State Board of Education. It is rewarding to see them grow academically and professionally as they move through each phase of our program.

Balanced Performance:

Student Teaching as a Collegiate Competitor School of Education students manage full schedules of athletic competition as they gain experience in the classroom.

For college athletes, early mornings and late nights are not out of the ordinary. Many of the athletic teams at Olivet Nazarene University start the day with lifting practices, even in the offseasons. In the heat of the season, practices and games can extend the day long into the evening. A typical college schedule allows for blocks of time throughout the day for homework, meals, social or academic gatherings, and the occasional nap. However, for senior athletes in the School of Education, student teaching drastically alters that flexibility.

School of Education athletes who are in good academic standing are encouraged to compete in their sport during their final semester at Olivet — allowing them to cap off their collegiate athletic careers as they gain vital experience in the classroom. This opportunity to pursue both personal and professional passions is an asset for prospective education students, particularly because it allows them to economically finish their undergraduate degree in four years.

This spring, 57 Olivet students are student teaching, and eight of them are also balancing the rigorous demands of participating in athletics.

“The School of Education is proud to support student-athletes and recognizes the unique qualities they bring to the field of education,” says Dr. Lance Kilpatrick ’02, associate dean of the School of Education. “We believe that college athletes make exceptional teachers.”

Students choose to attend Olivet for a variety of reasons, but the ability to continue their athletic journey beyond high school is a big draw for many.

“Football was the first reason I checked out Olivet,” notes senior Blake Lamb, who is majoring in special education and completing his student teaching experience at Kankakee Junior High School. “But when I came onto campus, I felt the warmth of the people. The professors in the School of Education seemed genuinely invested in me.”

Tyler Rickert, a senior math education major who is student teaching at Momence High School, was interested in attending Olivet because of the math and education departments. Playing on the men’s volleyball team as a libero/defensive specialist was a cool add-on — but also one that has had an immense impact on his personal and professional outlooks.

“Through my time playing volleyball at Olivet, one of the biggest things I’ve learned is that you need to know how to pick yourself up,” Tyler says. “In any team sport, you must be able to assist your

teammates, especially emotionally, and you can’t help others if you haven’t helped yourself. You could be the most talented player, but if you can’t serve yourself emotionally, there are going to be struggles.

It’s similar in the classroom.”

The majority of senior students in the School of Education get assigned to a student teaching position in a local school, where they partner with an experienced cooperating teacher. Other students, like Amelia Murray, a senior cross-country and track and field long-distance runner who is majoring in elementary education with endorsements in special education and middle school English, is student teaching near her hometown in Wheaton, Illinois.

To stay conditioned and ready for competition, student teachers often have to adjust their training schedules to accommodate full workdays in the classroom. During the week, Amelia runs before and/ or after the school day. She also drives to campus each weekend for track meets, to spend time with teammates and friends, and to do the team long run practice on Sunday mornings — seamlessly integrating what she is learning in the classroom into her training, and vice versa.

“Running teaches you lessons like perseverance, working hard and trying again when you fail,” Amelia reflects. “I went into student teaching wanting to be teachable and OK with making mistakes. In implementing things I’ve learned in my courses, I’ve realized things are different when you’re actually in the classroom.”

The liberal arts curriculum at Olivet lends itself well to students to engage in a variety of crossdisciplinary activities. Senior Kyle Szymanski, who is majoring in physical and health education, served as

a resident assistant for three years and participated in the Student Development Advisement Group, Kappa Delta Pi, National Society of Leadership and Success, and the Christian Educators of America. He is student teaching at Liberty Intermediate School in Bourbonnais.

“I chose Olivet for a variety of reasons,” Kyle says. “There is an amazing combination of strong academics, great community and the chance to keep playing the sport I enjoy so much. I knew I wanted to go into a medical or health-related field and actually started out as a nursing major. Although my passion for nursing fell off, I was able to explore the physical and health education world and immediately fell in love with it. I have always had a passion for working with children, guiding them and helping them learn and grow.”

Competing in collegiate athletics has taught all four of these preservice educators valuable lessons about how to succeed in both individual and team formats, which is vital in the field of education. Ultimately, the goal is to provide an excellent academic experience for the young students they get to interact with.

“Student teaching is my No. 1 priority,” Blake says.

“The football coaches were 100% on board with that, so balancing everything has been very easy.

In general, the coaches talk a lot about how no one should strive to be average. In your walk with Christ, if you’re average, you’re lukewarm. I’ve really tried in my studies and on the field myself to push beyond average and work on being a better man with their encouragement.”

That push for excellence is a common theme.

“Coach [Kyle] Rago always says, ‘Academics over athletics,’” Amelia reflects. “He tells us how much he

believes in us and that running is ultimately for the glory of God, so we should have fun. He emphasizes to trust our training, which has been helpful both in athletics and in the classroom.”

For Dillon Dahl, head coach of the men’s volleyball team, the ability to compete while completing his own undergraduate coursework was hugely beneficial for his career as an educator and coach.

“In my first year, I was head track coach and helped with officiating volleyball games,” he says. “By my second year, I was also the assistant volleyball coach. So it is very beneficial for student teachers to understand and experience both [teaching and athletic involvement] simultaneously.”

Balancing the demands of a teaching schedule while still training for high-level competition can be difficult, but most coaches really believe that the benefits outweigh the risks for their athletes.

“Allowing student athletes to student teach and continue their athletic career is a unique experience — but one that benefits the student immensely,” adds head track and field coach Kyle Rago ’07. “If they are going to be successful, they are going to do it because of self-determination. It teaches them a new level of dedication and pushes them outside what they probably thought they were capable of. Once you’ve conquered your perceived boundaries, you no longer see limits — just a goal to achieve.”

Having their own supportive coaches and administrative staff, in addition to strong teammate relationships, has made the tricky process of balancing busy schedules and new responsibilities smooth for the student-athletes.

“I think that translating athletic experiences into the classroom will almost be natural,” Tyler says. “On and off the court, you must be there for your guys and do what you can to support them. It’s the same in the classroom. You have to be there for all of your students. You must let them know that you care about them and that they are capable of greatness.”

For student-athletes, the teamwork really does help make their dreams work.

“I’m grateful for the support from my own professors, parents, coaches and peers throughout my time at Olivet,” Kyle affirms. “Just as in sports, education requires teamwork, perseverance and encouragement, all of which I look forward to fostering in my future students.”

STEM HONORS Collaborative Discovery in Lifesaving Cancer Research in PNG “I was first introduced to research during my own undergraduate degree in biology, and I’ve been hooked ever since,” says Nicole Vander Schaaf, Ph.D., professor of biology at Olivet Nazarene University.

“There’s something exciting about discovering new knowledge and learning more about God’s handiwork through research.”

This summer, Dr. Vander Schaaf and a group of students from the Walker School of STEM will travel to Papua New Guinea to serve for a month at the Kudjip Nazarene Hospital. She will mentor biology students, senior Lucy Martinson and junior Sadie Blaszczyk, to test samples from local women for the human papilloma virus (HPV), which commonly causes cervical cancer. This intensive research experience is a unique element of the students’ University Honors Program capstone research projects.

When Dr. Vander Schaaf first traveled to Papua New Guinea three years ago on a mission trip, she worried that her microbiology-focused skills and expertise were unlikely to be useful to the hospital. However, she quickly realized that although she could not directly provide medical care, she could be useful in the clinical lab.

“After my visit, I felt the Lord’s calling to use my training to bring more of God’s Kingdom here on Earth as it is in Heaven,” Dr. Vander Schaaf reflects. “I asked one of the doctors what some of their biggest needs are, and cervical cancer was near the top of the list. The doctors see too many young women die of a disease that is almost completely preventable.

We then began to brainstorm how we could make a difference through research.”

The University Honors Program offers qualified students the opportunity to satisfy four general education courses through a multidisciplinary approach during their first two years of college.

During the following two years, students who want to continue in the program formulate a research topic, which they explore under the guided mentorship of a faculty member.

Dr. Vander Schaaf had previously mentored a biology student in the University Honors Program and thought that the HPV testing research would be a great topic for another student research project. She suggested that Lucy join her efforts to develop a lowcost but equally effective and consistent HPV testing mechanism like what is currently available on the market. In initial testing, Dr. Vander Schaaf and Lucy

identified affordable reagents but faced logistical hurdles such as how to transport materials that needed to remain at sub zero temperatures for 8,400 miles. Ultimately, they found success drying out the reagents for reactivation at their final destination.

“This research is truly unique and only could have happened by all the things God set in place,” Lucy reflects. “The whole project was a combination of a bunch of tiny miracles. We didn’t know if we could afford the first trip, and then we weren’t sure we’d even be able to transport the tests without damaging their efficacy. But it all worked out, and we got to go support doctors and researchers in providing health care to women.”

When Lucy and Dr. Vander Schaaf traveled to Kudjip Nazarene Hospital last summer, they witnessed the medical staff educating local women about the importance of getting tested for HPV and how such tests can lead to early detection and cancer treatment. The team received positive feedback from the training, and consenting women received two tests: a conventional screening that is usually cost-prohibitively inaccessible in Papua New Guinea and the test that Dr. Vander Schaaf and Lucy were hoping to optimize by comparing their results to the

former. Unfortunately, they quickly realized there was a prevalent issue of false-positive results in their experimental tests, indicating there was more work to be done to increase the test’s reliability.

They returned to campus hopeful to be able to adjust their methods. However, Lucy’s period of research was drawing to a close. For the research to continue to gain traction, Dr. Vander Schaaf knew that adding someone to the team was necessary. She felt confident that Sadie would be the right person.

“The saddest thing for me to see after Lucy’s work would have been for our HPV testing project to die due to lack of student interest,” adds Dr. Vander Schaaf. “Once you’ve seen firsthand the immense need for HPV testing and have looked in the eyes of the women who were so grateful to be tested, you can’t unsee that. The hopeful but not-ready-yet progress that Lucy has made is incredible, and I am so grateful for Sadie’s willingness to continue this project, with the hopes that someday all women will have access to an affordable HPV test.”

“I was very excited to join the team,” Sadie reflects.

“Lucy and Dr. V were able to build trust with the women in Papua New Guinea, which was a big win.

When they came back, I was able to help focus on one piece of the puzzle to gain testing accuracy.”

The collaborative approach to research has proven helpful for a smooth passing of the torch. Early this past January, Sadie and Dr. Vander Schaaf had a breakthrough in the lab that nearly wiped out the presence of false results, meaning they could shift their focus to the cost effectiveness of the tests and hopefully apply the knowledge to screening for other strains of HPV. The work the three women have completed by investing hundreds of hours has a greater purpose than just bolstering their own personal experiences.

They have already contributed to life-changing research to impact women in Papua New Guinea.

“Research can be missional — a way to serve God and love His people,” says Dr. Vander Schaaf of her passion for the project. “Partnering with students for research continues to bring me great fulfillment and joy, and I hope my students get a taste of this as well.”

Lucy has found this to be true.

“It was great to see how God was using scientific disciplines to impact real people,” Lucy says. “I hope our research provides data for someone to fully develop new testing systems to increase accessibility for women around the world.”

Sadie has similar hopes for the application of their collective research.

“Papua New Guinea doesn’t currently have a national screening program for HPV due to the high cost per test,” she says. “What we’re working on with this alternative method has the potential to help women who are at high risks for cancer. I know that this issue is on God’s heart, and it is so fulfilling to use academics to honor Him in this way.”

To be eligible for application to the Honors Program, students must meet at least one of the following qualifications: have an ACT score of 28 (or an equivalent SAT score); graduate in the top 10 percent of their graduating class; or have an unweighted GPA of at least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale.

Family Nurse Practitioner Program Prepares Nurses for Career Advancement To be a nurse is to be singularly focused on the holistic well-being of other people. Nursing professionals are educated to help restore health to people not just in body but also in mind, heart and spirit. In many traditional hospital or clinical settings, nurses use their knowledge to support and expand the work of other health care professionals. However, in family care settings, a nurse with an advanced degree can also directly serve patients as a primary care physician.

Paige Robinson is one of those nursing professionals who is currently seeking to expand her professional opportunities by completing a graduate degree in nursing. She is enrolled in Olivet Nazarene University’s Master of Science in Nursing: Family Nurse Practitioner (M.S.N.-FNP) program and is set to graduate in 2027.

The M.S.N.-FNP degree at Olivet is designed for registered nurses who have already completed their bachelor’s degree and who have gained experience by working in the health care industry. Strong candidates for this degree are those who want to further their career as an FNP. Paige became aware of the program after one of her friends completed it and was excited about how the program would advance some of her own career goals.

“I have always wanted to be a family nurse practitioner — that has been my ultimate education and career goal,” she says. “I want to be able to manage a subset of my own patients and transition health care back into a holistic approach in my practice.”

She has continued to work as a registered nurse as she completes the FNP coursework, which is primarily delivered online. For nursing professionals who are considering enrolling in an advanced degree program like the M.S.N.-FNP program at Olivet, Paige emphasizes that the rewards of personal growth and career enhancement will be worth the effort.

Understanding the Differences Between a

Will and Living Trust

As you think about the future, two common tools to ensure your assets are distributed according to your wishes are a will and a living trust. While both serve similar purposes, they differ in execution, flexibility and privacy. Understanding these differences is essential for making an informed decision that aligns with your financial and philanthropic goals, such as leaving a charitable donation as part of your legacy.

WHAT IS A WILL? A will, or last will and testament, is a legal document that outlines how your property and assets will be distributed after your death. It also allows you to appoint an executor to manage your estate, name guardians for minor children and specify funeral preferences.

KEY FEATURES OF A WILL Goes Into Effect After Death: A will has no legal authority until you pass away.

Probate Requirement: A will must go through probate, a court-supervised process where your estate is settled, debts are paid and assets are distributed. Probate can be time-consuming and costly, depending on the complexity of the estate.

Public Record: Because a will is processed through probate, it becomes part of the public record, which means anyone can access its details.

Simple To Create: Wills are generally less expensive and simpler to draft compared to trusts, making them accessible for many individuals.

WHAT IS A LIVING TRUST? A living trust, or revocable trust, is a legal arrangement that allows you to transfer ownership of your assets into the trust during your lifetime. You serve as the trustee, maintaining control of your assets, and you can name a successor trustee to manage and distribute them after your death.

KEY FEATURES OF A LIVING TRUST Goes Into Effect During Your Lifetime: Unlike a will, a living trust becomes effective as soon as it is created and funded.

Avoids Probate: Assets held in a living trust do not go through probate, which simplifies and expedites the distribution process, reducing legal fees and keeping your estate private.

Continued Control: You can amend or revoke a living trust at any time during your lifetime, offering flexibility for changing circumstances.

Privacy: Because a living trust does not involve probate, its terms remain private, offering discretion about your assets and beneficiaries.

Management During Incapacity: If you become incapacitated, your successor trustee can manage the trust on your behalf without the need for court intervention.

DESIGNATED BENEFICIARIES ON DIFFERENT ASSETS Certain assets, such as life insurance policies, retirement accounts (e.g., 401(k)s and IRAs) and payable-on-death (POD) or transfer-on-death (TOD) accounts, bypass both wills and living trusts entirely.

These assets are transferred directly to the named beneficiaries upon your death.

Life Insurance Policies: When you purchase life insurance, you designate one or more beneficiaries to receive the death benefit.

Retirement Accounts: Designating beneficiaries ensures that retirement funds are transferred efficiently outside of probate.

Bank and Investment Accounts: Adding POD or TOD designations allows funds to transfer directly to beneficiaries without court involvement.

Leaving a charitable donation can provide significant tax benefits for your estate while supporting causes that matter most to you. Charitable gifts, whether through a will, trust or beneficiary designation, are an excellent way to create a lasting impact and build a meaningful legacy.

WHICH OPTION IS RIGHT FOR YOU? Choosing between a will and a living trust depends on your unique circumstances and goals:

It is crucial to keep beneficiary designations up to date, as these designations take precedence over your will or living trust. For example, if you name your spouse in a will but forget to update a life insurance policy after divorce, the funds may still go to your former spouse.

The award recognizes career and technical education (CTE) professionals for their leadership on behalf of ACTE, their innovations in CTE and their contributions to the field over an extended period. She was one of five finalists for the national award. Cindy was also inducted into the ACTE Hall of Fame, which honors the leadership of CTE professionals who have made enduring contributions to CTE throughout their career.

While not much of the original habitat remains, caretakers of the University have spent the past few decades intentionally planting trees native to the area as well as diversifying the flora.
