Can You Trust Your Mobile App? Mobile technology is changing our world rather rapidly: we now order food via Seamless, we get the ebooks of the latest bestsellers via Amazon, we book our next ride to the office via Uber, or Lyft, and, now, Qudos. Lightning-fast Internet, countless applications, less of the personal interactions, though, make our lives a tad bit easier than the usual. But convenience doesn’t handle trust and safety very well. Online banking gets hacked, ATMs are skimmed, and online tickets are scammed. Filipino-backed ridesharing platform Qudos addresses this overriding issue of trust and safety with its headlights on: Qudos, which officially launches in the Fall of 2018, is the only ridesharing app that connects the riders to their favorite drivers over and over (again), thus nurturing the earned trust between the passenger and the guy behind the wheel. “Qudos is much more than mere technology innovation. Our team listens to the needs of the ridesharing public, ready to respond to the clamor for a better riding experience,” guarantees Qudos Chairman & Founder Neil Anthony Rollon. Learn more about Qudos, a one-of-a-kind mobile app, on pages 10 to 13.

Joey Chanco

At Your Service

Wendell Gaa

Tourism Marketing Coordinator Working with PDOT-NY has imbued Joey with a strong sense of pride for his homeland. “My motivation in working with the Department of Tourism is the ability to promote my native country, the Philippines,” he proudly remarks. “My job showcases the different destinations in the Philippines that tourists can enjoy and appreciate. I am able to show the uniqueness of these destinations including the vibrant culture, food, and music of the Filipino people to the diverse population of New York and the rest of the U.S. The program ‘It’s More Fun In the Philippines’ is a great example of how my job has also become a passion as it clearly makes the job exciting.” Among Joey’s several huge accomplishments with PDOT-NY had been the coordination with travel operators at trade shows in the U.S., which have increased the volume of foreign tourists to the Philippines.

Such trade and tourism show tasks have included assisting his office’s booth at the annual New York Times Travel Show held every January at Manhattan’s Javits Convention Center, which attracts over 500 exhibitors.

Joey was born in Manila and grew up in Quezon City. His educational upbringing is as varied as his professional skills, as he first attended Lourdes School in Quezon City, before pursuing his studies at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, and then on to De La Salle University- College of Saint Benilde where he earned his Bachelor of Science (BS) in Computer Application. Afterward, he took up Visual Communication and Graphic Design at New York University (NYU). He joined the PDOT-NY team in August 2014. Before making his big move to the Big Apple, Joey had been based in Hollywood, California for nearly 10 years where he was employed by a production and promotion company. This experience enabled him to build a solid network of celebrities with whom he still retains communication with on every occasion they visit New York. “It was Paris Hilton, the Olsen twins, and my good friend Ed Westwick that had me interested to move to New York as we often partied between the two cities (New York and LA),” he fondly recalls, “PDOT-NY had also given me a chance to work with a lot of Filipino celebrities, but the highlight would be the Miss Universe visit of Pia Wurtzbach, Megan Young, and Kylie Versoza. They showed that the Filipina beauty is truly world class.”

ending a huge helping hand to the New York Philippine Department of Tourism’s (PDOT-NY) campaign to promote the country’s beautiful destinations is the ever enthusiastic, energetic face of Joey Chanco, tourism marketing coordinator. Ever loyal to the mission of his office, Joey is multi-tasked with assisting his colleagues and clientele alike with his marketing, graphic design, and technical support skills. He further oversees tourism-related events throughout the community in all aspects from online promotion to production of tourism print materials. He has also been responsible for the constant updating of PDOT-NY’s website and social media outlets.

The PDOT-NY team: (L-R) Emily Blaza, Joey Chanco, Susan Del Mundo and Luz Navarro

Joey is very optimistic about the growth of Philippine tourism promotion throughout the U.S., as he has noted that PDOT-NY is now an active participant in his personal favorite tourism event, the annual United States Tour Operators Association conference and marketplace event where over 800 U.S. tour operators, tourism boards of the world, and airline and travel companies converge and network with one another for five days. As to what is next in store for PDOT-NY’s regional activities, Joey points out that there are yet more scheduled tourism shows coming up, which include culinary events that should make all Filipino “foodies” real excited, along with the first-time consumers of Philippine cuisine.

Fernando Esguerra Sharing her success with upcoming Filipino artists Photo by Rolan Gutierrez

A

ngel Ramchand, popularly known as Angel Ram, is an accomplished singer by any standard. She was the first Filipina to perform at the B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in Times Square, had recorded singles, and won awards – a testament to her remarkable singing ability. But behind her success, there is a little-known fact about this soulful singer: her unselfish wish for other Filipinos, especially struggling Filipino artists, to also make it in the USA. To help make this happen, Angel opens doors to Filipino singers and performs with them in music lounges and bars in the Tri-State area where she regularly sings. “I guess that’s my way of paying back. I went through the same struggles they’re going through right now, and more,” says Angel, who came to the US in 2012, practically knowing nobody in the land of milk and honey. “It was hard and I hope nobody would experience the things that I had gone through.” Born to parents who were both into music – her father a drummer, her mother a vocalist – Angel, who holds a degree in Nursing, was only four when she joined a singing contest and later on had a string of TV appearances. She got married at a young age and then moved from Zamboanga City, where she was born and raised, to Manila. The decision to migrate was reached when her marriage failed and had to leave her three children with their father in the Philippines as she had no way to contact them. To survive in the US, she grabbed whatever honest job she could and prayed that her luck would change for the better. And it did. In 2014, she rekindled her passion for singing and performed in the Tri-State area with her own band, the NU7. Angel and her group had played with known Filipino artists such as Lui Villaruz, Anna Leah Javier, Glenn Jacinto, and Jo Awayan, to name a few. Angel even became part of the Jo Awayan show held in New York in 2015. She also did some front acts for visiting Filipino performers – the likes of Geneva Cruz, Vina Morales, Gab Valenciano, and Sam Milby. Angel had also performed alongside David Pomeranz and the Drifters. Angel, whose wide array of songs include those by Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Angela Bofill, Whitney Houston, and Patti Austin, had her first solo concert in May 2015, titled “Angel Unveiled,” which she dedicated to her children. In December 2015, she launched her first single, “I Would Say.” It was in January 2016 when the big break came. Angel was asked to sing the songs of two of her favorite artists in a musical tribute called “The Soulful Songs of Etta James and Angela Bofill. The venue? The B.B. King Blues Club

& Grill. She says she was really very nervous before the performance, but she was able to compose herself, and like a true professional, performed the songs to the delight of her audience. Then came the awards. In 2017, Angel, a former director of Jaycees International in New Jersey, represented the USA in the World Championships of Performing Arts, garnering three awards in the Adult Category: Broadway, Rock, and Gospel. She was also an awardee in the Performing Arts, Female category, of the Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League. Angel is now regularly performing at popular venues such as B.B. King, Café Wha, and The Groove, among a number of others. She has an upcoming birthday concert set for Nov. 20 at the Feinstein’s/54 Below. Angel had really come a long way from her humble beginnings in Zamboanga City. “God has really been good to me,” she says, adding that she got married to Zuhare Meri in December 2017. “Someday soon, I hope God would grant another fervent wish: for me to see my children again.” o c t o b e R 2 0 1 8 FIL-AM WHO’S WHO 7

Message from the Founder My warmest greetings! Please allow me to share with you the story and vision of Qudos. Before I came up with the idea behind Qudos, I was busy running my own production outfit (New York Captures) and, before that, was a top sales executive in a US-based food supplement company. While these two businesses provided different goods and services, their missions were one and the same: to enhance people’s lives and share the same to others. Qudos also aims to enhance people’s lives. And if you have ever wondered how it feels to have a personal driver you can trust, Qudos can provide you with that experience. Soon, we will launch Qudos, a more efficient ridesharing service you can rely on every time you need a ride. I am an iOS developer and UI/UX designer who has a burning passion for technology innovation. That passion, combined with my desire to help change the world for the better, served as the driving force to develop Qudos. I am happy to note that the whole Qudos family shares the same passion and desire and is committed to providing the ultimate service possible in the ridesharing industry--far better than that of the competition. Qudos is much more than mere technology innovation. Our team listens to the needs of the ridesharing public, ready to respond to the clamor for a better riding experience. Unlike other apps, Qudos enables its riders and drivers to closely interact. The app allows the rider, who particularly likes the services of a certain driver, to request for the same driver. Such feature not only serves the interest of the rider but also helps the driver build a loyal, steady customer base--a win-win situation. At Qudos, our vision is to be able to develop a relationship between riders and drivers that is built on trust. Our mission is to provide our clientele a safe and pleasant ride. Thank you for taking the time to know about us. We look forward to hearing your stories about your excellent experiences with Qudos, where expectations are met in every ride you make. Qudos to all of you! Neil Anthony Rollon Founder of Qudos
