To veer away from the typical tale of murder, political corruption, and celebrity scandal that is commonly found in tabloids, mainstream TV news, and the Internet, the germ of an idea to publish a magazine, Fil-Am Who’s Who, that would instead feature refreshingly uplifting and inspiring life stories of Filipino Americans was born three years ago.

Behind that small beginning, which has branched out to other great things, such as the inception of a full-service media company and a two-city tour of renowned fashion designer Renee Salud’s “TatakSalud” last year, were the inimitable husband and wife team of Rolan and Myrna Gutierrez, current Philippine Independence Day Council Inc. (PIDCI) President Dr. Prospero Lim, and the quintessential fashionista Ollie David.

Kudos to you (Rolan, Myrna, Doc. Pros, and Ollie) for being so positive, hardworking, and consistently persistent, which helped us survive the last three challenging years!

FIL-AM WHO’S WHO Celebrating 3rd Year of Inspiring Life Stories of Filipino Americans Fil-Am Who’s Who magazine, which primarily features Filipino Americans from the New York Tri-State area, started publication, which resembles a broadsheet, in January 2013—a far cry from what the monthly magazine looks like today: 20 glossy pages of striking photographs placed against a crisp, clean layout design, and printed on 100-pound paper stock.

Its printed version reaches more than 4,000 Filipino Americans who are based in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Boston; its digital version, found on filamwhoswho.com, reaches tens of thousands of Filipinos around the world.

The magazine remains free, and we are thankful to our sponsors and advertisers whose business donations have helped us survive and proliferate while striving to tell the Filipino American’s most inspiring life stories.

Josephine Jampayas Reigning Mrs. RED POINSETTIA & community leader

Josephine Neri Jampayas is an active community leader in New York who keeps herself busy with worthy causes. Known as Josie to her family and friends, she’s been involved with organizations such as the Cagayan de OroMisamis Oriental Association, where she sits as a member of the board of directors. She’s also an active member of the SOP Medical Lions Club and the Glambassadors Club. She was co-chair of Mrs. Kalayaan 2014.

Josie was born in Manila and has six grown children. She’s fun-loving and kind-hearted; she loves to sing and dance. She finished her degree in business administration at Lyceum University in Manila and worked at the National Economic Development Authority for five years.

For the last 15 years, she has lived in the United States.

She says, “I’m happy to have six beautiful children. And I am most grateful to have met Mike who is a dream and an answered prayer. I promise to be faithful. I will love him and take care of him till death do us part.”

She believes that having been married to Mike is an answered prayer that took a long time. Mike’s achievements as a leader and an officer at Columbia University, where he taught microbiology did not change his humble and loving nature. Josie feels she’s the luckiest woman in the world.

“The kitchen has always seemed like home to me,” says Jose Miguel Aboitiz Juan.

Interviewed in his Manila home, the Davao-born member of the prominent Aboitiz clan in Cebu, recalls fond memories of family and food. “My family has had a long and steady love affair with food. So much that we have published two cookbooks filled with family recipes.”

Growing up between Davao, Cebu, and Manila, Miguel recalls many family trips to various parts of the country where the most important highlight of the trips was the menu. “My grandfather had a passion for good food, and I think he filled all of us with that same ardor. My cousins and I still always get together over a good meal, and we are always hunting for the next amazing dish.”

It was this inherited passion for food that led him back to the kitchen in his late 20s. As a teen, he was frequently in the kitchen, but his early 20s saw him pursuing other hobbies, where he found the most success in SCUBA diving. Although whenever he’s in his parents’ home, the kitchen was where he could be found. His mother, Cristina Aboitiz Juan, who made a name for herself as a fitness guru in the Philippines, was the one who encouraged him to pursue his passion for cooking.

“My mother is one of the most generous and encouraging people I know, and when I told her I wanted to go to culinary school, she gave me her absolute support.”

That decision brought him to New York, where he attended the International Culinary Center (ICC) in SoHo, often referred to as the best culinary school in America, and populated by prominent and prestigious chefs as deans and professors. He took up a course in classic French cuisine. Miguel further cultivated his culinary skills, often working on Filipino recipes executed with French techniques whenever he is not in school.

After his culinary arts studies, his job hunt led him to founding Chowhounds, a catering company now based in New York City.

In the first few months after founding the company, his partners, Martin Limchayseng and William Morrissette thought that opening pop-up restaurants would be a good way to further promote their catering service, and dip their toes into the restaurant waters of the city. They also realized that would give them a chance to do more with their culinary skills, such as hold workshops to show that cooking what many perceive to be “fancy” food is easy and fun.

Both Martin and William are culinary arts graduates. The latter, Miguel’s own classmate at ICC, and the former an administrator of the school who noticed Miguel’s cooking after he made traditional Cebuano-style chicharon during one of their school events.

“When Martin tried my chicharon, he knew immediately that a Cebuano made it. No one else makes it the way we do in Cebu,” Miguel says. “It was the beginning of a great friendship that has led to a business partnership.”

Between the three partners, Miguel is confident that Chowhounds will be able to offer a great variety of cuisines. William is from Alabama who is bringing a lot of American and Southern cooking to the table. Both Miguel and Martin grew up in the Philippines, which gives the company much knowledge in Filipino food and flavors from all three major island groups of the country—Cebu, Manila, and Davao—not to mention their French culinary arts training, and Miguel’s very strong Spanish roots (His father is a first-generation Spanish-Filipino whose family is originally from Alicante, Spain.)

“We like catering,” says Miguel. “But this year we are focused on the pop-ups.”

Chowhounds’ pop-up restaurants will begin this coming spring at Exhibit C (80 Elridge St. LES); running for two weeks of every month until July. Each month, they plan to change their cuisines in order to give their diners something new each time. It also allows them to showcase their skills and range. Their first menu? Filipino food, of course!

“It is such an exciting time for Filipino food,” Miguel shares. “We are seeing some great Filipino restaurants coming up and we are receiving wonderful reception as well. I am happy to be joining the forces that are pushing the boundaries of Filipino food, to create new spins on dishes, to make beautiful plates, and to just popularize these flavors in other parts of the world.”

Apart from the pop-up restaurants, Miguel also plans to hold cooking workshops in the same space. “Very often people go to a restaurant and think they cannot make these dishes at home.

That is not the case. It is much easier than we all realize, which is why I want to take whatever are the most popular dishes on my menus and teach those dishes at workshops. We plan to hold the workshops every Monday beginning our opening week.”

When asked whether or not this was wise, Miguel replied, “I believe in collaborative learning and sharing. I think teaching people how to recreate these dishes—especially Filipino dishes— will only help all of us Filipino chefs with what we are trying to do.”

Following the pop-up restaurants, Chowhounds intends to continue catering as well as looking for a small spot in the city from which they can serve food regularly.

r. Prospero A. Lim is the newly minted president of the Philippine Independence Day Council, Incorporated (PIDCI), which spearheads the annual Philippine Independence Day parade in New York City.

Back in 2012, the well-respected doctor was the unanimous choice to lead the parade as its grand marshal. Dr. Lim has an established and reputable psychiatry practice in Staten Island and is also a very active community leader in the Greater New York Filipino and Filipino-American community. When asked to speak before a packed audience at the Kalayaan Hall of the Philippine Center, he challenged the community members to gather at least 250,000 participants in that same year’s Philippine Independence Day festivities, which were attended by only 100,000 participants in 2011.

Dr. Lim was the president of the University of Santos Tomas Medical Association of New York, and the president of the Philippine Medical Association in America (PMAA), where he led a highly successful medical, surgical, and humanitarian mission to Catbalogan City in Samar, Philippines. The medical mission tended to some 8,000 recipients of various needs, including cataract surgeries.

He was also the president of several other community organizations, among which were the Waray Community Association, USA, the Katbaloganon Association, USA, and the Empire City Medical Lions Club, where he was a Melvin Fellow awardee. He also served as a commander of the Knights of Rizal, New York Chapter, for four years. He is involved with the Knights of San Lazaro and the San Lorenzo Ruiz Association in America. He is a co-publisher and columnist for the Fil-Am Who’s Who magazine.

Dr. Lim has been a resident of Staten Island since 1977.

E

laine is my younger sister who is turning 15 this year. Since she was very young, Elaine always stood out—always ready to be the star of every special occasion or event that my family attended.

With a bubbly personality and a wide beaming smile, my sister could not be ignored. For years, this outgoing young star has been fortified with ballet, lyrical, tap, and hip-hop dance lessons, in addition to piano lessons. More recently, she has been taking up singing, acting, and modeling lessons to build her stage repertoire even more.

By around age 13, Elaine started participating in modeling and talent competitions, winning First Runner-Up in 2014 Miss Teen Philippines by PHHOSO. She was also crowned 2015 Miss PAFCOM, First-Placer in the talent portion of the Jr. Teen National American Miss Pennsylvania, and Finalist in the National AllAmerican Miss. She calls the experience “unforgettable, seeing all of these other talented kids here and being recognized as I was.”

given by those close to me,” Elaine adds.

In the last two years, Elaine performed at the TOFA Awards at Carnegie Hall. Last year, she performed at the GMA Kapusong Pinoy concert at the historic Town Hall in Times Square. She has modeled for renowned Filipino designers Renee Salud, Edgar San Diego, Edgar Madamba, and Richard Papa. With yours truly, we have both modeled for Avel Bacudio in California.

What impresses me even more about my sister is that her talents extend off stage as well. She was among a small number of students who were accepted to the Downingtown Stem AcademyHigh School; she is also part of the school’s tennis team. At age 12, she achieved her second-degree black belt in taekwondo.

Additionally, she enjoys performing at nursing homes for the elderly, teaching and participating in youth cultural dances, and singing with KFAAI youth choir. Elaine is regularly seen singing the American and Philippine National Anthems for various FilipinoAmerican associations, in addition to her singing at her school’s homecoming football game.

Furthermore, she had volunteered as an altar server and cantor at our church in Exton, Pennsylvania. Recently, she was one of the awardees at AFTA’s PERLAS (Philippine-American Exemplary Responsive Leadership Award for Students).

I believe that her strong positive drive rubs off on the people she encounters in her life, and I know she enjoys having that impact on others. y grand nephew Jude Malvin unexpectedly passed away recently; he would have been 42 years old on January 31 this year.

While trying to figure out what could have happened to make sense of this tragic loss, his mother found a birthday card (a Carlton card) that was placed on a Christmas tree. It was addressed to his MOM whose birthday was on December 30.

It reads:

MOM, Even when I was younger, I knew these things for sure.

You loved me, No matter what.

Reading the card and feeling his sentiments made me cry. Every time I see the card, I cry.

I just want to share this with you.

You cared about what was going on in my life.

And you were always there for me.

And now, I hope you know you can count on me for those very same things.
