Director’s Note Each year as I sit down to write the Director’s Note for the spring musical, I find myself compelled to explain why. Why this show? Why now? This year, the answer to that question actually doesn’t begin in the “now.” Finding the root of that answer means going back in time.

When In the Heights opened on Broadway in 2008 (the year we are setting our production), the world was a very different place. America was a country on the precipice of a digital revolution, a time before the ubiquity of social media and smart phones. Although we were in an economic recession, there was a general sense of optimism that we could get through it together. We were a more unified nation, with a greater sense of togetherness. Differences, whether they were political, social, or cultural, did not become divisions like they do today.

The world certainly was not perfect in 2008, but I think back on those days now with a sense of nostalgia for an America that is no more: a time when we were more open to those who were not like us, before echo-chambers and information bubbles. A time when disagreeing was not an insurmountable barrier to seeing the humanity of another person. An America beautifully exemplified by the tight-knit community in the barrio.

In the Heights is a quintessentially American story: a community of immigrants, working to make ends meet in hopes of a better life. A love letter to the predominantly Latino NYC neighborhood of Washington Heights, the play hinges on the everyday connections of the characters: the joys and the struggles of a diverse place bound together by a strong sense of unity.

Which brings me back to the question of “Why this show now?” In addition to being a symbol of shared identity in and of itself, In the Heights serves as a reminder of how we as human beings can connect. While it is about a very specific group of people in Washington Heights, this show is an opportunity to engage with the music, language, culture, and daily existence of a community of which you may not personally be a part.

For better or worse, we have left the world of 2008 in the past. But let’s remember that one way to mend a broken world is to step out of our own experiences and empathize with others, especially those who are different from us. We owe it to ourselves to turn off the screens and see, really see, each other in 2026. And what better way to start than by seeing In the Heights?
