interview, ivir. Mnorew vj iuiq In 1962 after receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in education from George Washington University, crewcut Andy Guida came to Good Counsel. Fourteen years later, his hair is a bit longer and he has become somewhat of an institution here. One of the most popular faculty members ever since his arrival, he has established himself as a teacher and a coach.

Falcon football teams would be ill at ease without Andy’s familiar sideline swagger and crouch. He has been with us — truly with us — supporting us every inch of the way for so long that we would rather not think of what it would be like otherwise. It is to this easy-going, good-natured friend, teacher and coach that we dedicate this 1976 Falcon.

FALCON: What has been the most satisfying and enjoyable thing for you in your many years here at Good Counsel?

GUIDA: Probably the opportunity to work with good people and work with young adults who are very cooperative in most all fields. There have been very few problems and very many enjoyable relationships.

FALCON: This is hypothetical, but if you were given the complete authority to do so, what major changes would you institute here at G.C.?

GUIDA: As a major change, I would require everyone to participate in an extracurricular activity — no matter what. This would be a requirement. It would be after school because what I think is happening with the modular scheduling is w e’ve become a part-time school. A lot of people are only concerned with how early they are leaving. The end result is that school is

no longer the center of their teenage years. Their many Outside activities have taken away from it. I think w e’ve encouraged it, in a sense, by going into this modular, end-of-the-day, quickly-going-home schedule. I think the people who are presently involved in activities are probably the ones who do not need them.

FALCON: How do you approach both teaching and coaching here at school? I mean how does the student / teacher relationship affect the player / coach relationship?

GUIDA: There is no difference. As a coach you are a teacher and as a teacher you are coaching. Basically, a good coach is a good teacher. Like anything else, you play a game by learning the fundamentals and you pass a test by learning the fundamentals The job as a teacher and the job as a coach — I can see no separating of the two. As far as my rple goes, I think as a coach you definitely have an advantage.

FALCON: What part do athletics play at Good Counsel?

GUIDA: Anywhere, athletics play a vital role. I know it has in my life in developing the entire human, not only from the physical standpoint, but also from the maturity angle. I don’t think there is any other place in high school where you can find a combination of all these things. A person who has an opportunity to participate in these things definitely has to come out as a more well-rounded individual. Like anything else you learn by experiencing. I think the more things you experience — good, bad or indifferent — the better opportunity you are going to have to learn

Thomas Kolar

Not a haberdasher’s delight, but just fine as far as we’re concerned, Tom Kolar has been here at G.C. as long as anyone remembers Andy Guida. He attended Georgetown and received his Master's in history from the University of Maryland. From his bookcase-lined office in the Social Studies Resource Center, Mr. Kolar has chaired that department over the past three years, always expanding the course offerings. Ever the G.C. enthusiast and supporter, a sport does not exist that Tom Kolar has not helped with or coached. His presence has come to be as expected as that of the most important players. It is to this dedicated teacher and loyal friend that we dedicate our 1976 Falcon.

FALCON: What has brought you the most satisfaction in your years here at Good Counsel?

KOLAR: The first thing that comes to my mind is the Social Studies Department. W e’ve really expanded and I think w e’ve got really excellent teachers there.

Eleven years ago when I started in social studies it consisted of American History, World History and maybe something else. It was a pain in the neck for everybody. W e’ve been able to do a lot in adding elective courses that people want to take. Over the years w e’ve brought in a lot of fine teachers, but before they were stuck in a curriculum that was “Mickey Mouse” . So there’s a lot of satisfaction in having a good department because we’ve got good people and good courses. Many people have contributed to this.

FALCON: What have been the most notable changes in the G.C. student body that you have observed?

KOLAR: Well, I end up disagreeing with most people on this, but there are things that have changed and

things that have stayed the same. I’m inclined to think that more things have stayed the same. There are superficial changes in appearance and topics of conversation and use of language, but when you get down to what’s really going on, it seems to me it’s not too different. The changes tend to be more on the surface, but there remains the basic reality of young men trying to cope with complicated lives and a complicated environment and trying to grow into people they know and like.

FALCON: What changes or developments have you been aware of in regard to the student / faculty relationship?

KOLAR: It is better. With the creation of unstructured time and the fact we don’t have class every minute, the teachers are accessible to the students and viceversa. It has created a more human atmosphere which was one of the goals when this type of schedule was set up. I look at the whole idea of education as a partnership. The teacher and the student work together. This has got to help to create a more healthy relationship between teachers and students.

FALCON: In reference to parochial schools in general, do you believe this type of school system is still considered as important and valuable to the student growing up today? What future do you foresee for parochial education?

KOLA FI: I think there is a future. I think it is a real healthy thing in America that we have a pluralistic society. I think private Catholic education has played a useful role in contributing to the mix and the mutual progress of everyone. I think it will and should continue. I think you’re going to find public educators looking at the private schools for what we have.

They do not for the most part have an orientation towards values. They see this as where they are falling apart. They can’t figure out what they’re doing and why they’re doing it.

Mr. Jim Shaw has been with the Good Counsel Music Department since its beginning some five years ago. A music major and holder of a Master’s Degree in music composition, he is a talented performer and writer and an exceptional teacher. His work and tireless efforts are the underlying reasons for the success the program has enjoyed over the past few years.

Falcon: What are the principles you emphasize in teaching your music classes?

Shaw: The main stress in my classes has been learning both the performance and knowledge elements of music. The performance part is pretty much selfexplanatory. I place emphasis on preparing for concerts, etc. and how to practice and get a feel for music. The other half could be called music knowledge — how to develop an ear for music, its history, famous figures in the field, and musical trends and themes. We try to make it a total involvement in the piece the group or individual is working on. In this way, it doesn’t become just a performance oriented program like that in most schools. Their bands are geared to competition in band festivals and contests where they are judged against other groups. The contests in themselves aren’t bad but they can tend to get into athletic-type situations with someone getting to win and someone else having to lose. In my opinion, there’s no place for winning or losing in the

arts. Its not a question of who’s better but of the indivdual artist doing his best to improve and express himself.

Falcon: How important is music in the general education of a high school student?

Shaw: Usually, in most educational systems, the arts have been considered luxury courses, whereas math, science, and language have usually been considered the mainstays. But if you were to trace history back, you would see that art and music have been included in the educational systems of just about all the world’s great cultures. The study of art and music is just as relevant as the study of other major subject areas. When people have completed their major education, whether high school or college, they continue on, not only in their occupation or specialty but in artistic enjoyment and endeavors as well. I think it is very important, then, that everyone is given the opportunity for music or art experiences during high school.

Falcon: What about the community service aspects of your program?

Shaw: We perform in places like elementary schools and rest homes where there is a need and love for music. By its nature, music is a very communicative art and we like to share it with others. It is also a personal art but we don’t want the student to think that he is going to spend the rest of his life performing only in his basement. They have to learn to share their talent and knowledge with others. The audiences are very appreciative and our musicians enjoy it. So I think that this is another major factor in the success of our program.

Falcon: What do you perceive as some of the benefits of the modular scheduling system?

Shaw: One of the major assets as far as the music department is concerned is the large number of courses we are able to offer. We have a large variety of courses unmatched by most other high schools, either public or private. They might only offer a basic band course with music appreciation and a few others. We can offer writing, composition, and improvisation among others, but because of the modular system, these courses are made available to a larger group of students. This has greatly aided the growth of the program.

a season of hurrah and heartbreak

When the season was over, the cynics once again sneered at the inability of Good Counsel football teams to win the “ big games” , It was easy enough to adopt that attitude, the Falcons having dropped key WMAC confrontations to Carroll, DeMatha and St. John's. What escaped the attention of most observers was the hard work and dedication involved in the six victories that Good Counsel did earn in 1975. The critics groaned when the Falcons failed on an attempted two-point conversion and lost narrowly to Carroll, 7-6, but could they help but take notice when GC knocked off perennial Delaware champ Salesianum for the second year in a row? Yes, Good Counsel was soundly beaten by the best St. John’s football team in the long and prestigious athletic history of that school, but is this not offset by the fact that the Falcons trounced two top Baltimore teams by a combined score of 35-0? GC’s gridiron team for 1974 was a rugged and determined unit that played

the most demanding schedule of any high school in> metropolitan Washington and still managed to produce a winning 6-4 record. The Falcons’ success can be traced to the long hours of sacrifice by the individuals on the team, who freely gave of themselves during the course of summer practice and the regular season.

The year was not lacking for moments of high drama. It contained enough ups and downs to give the average fan the impression of riding on a rollercoaster. Tino Monaldo’s 46-yard touchdown run broke open the Loyola game on September 28. Three weeks later, he was being carried off the field with a leg injury that disabled him for the season.

In what was probably their most satisfying victory o f the season, the Falcons upset Salesianum 13-6 on a touchdown pass from Steve Stanislav to Tim Dec. The Sallies were later to exert their usual dominance over Delaware football and they eventually put two

players on national All-America teams. But it would be a long time before Salesianum and their fans could forget the two losses they had suffered against Good Counsel. In the exuberance following the Salesianum game, expectations were at an all-time high that the Falcons could knock off arch-rival St. John’s. It was not to be. Before a record crowd on October 12, the Cadets rolled to a 27-10 triumph. An 85-yard romp by St. John’s All-Met Pete Haley and a subsequent Falcon fumble with the ball inside the Cadet 10-yard line put the game out of reach in the third quarter.

The contest against Carroll on October 25 was the team’s most exciting game, as well as their sharpest disappointment. Stanislav’s hurried pass glanced off the fingertips of Don Brideau on a conversion attempt that would have been the winning two points.

The Lions had scored with less than a minute left to play on a 30-yard run by speedster Jason Dickerson to take a 7-0 lead. The Falcons' hopes appeared finished, but the GC Offense, helped along by various penalties, marched downfield and finally scored when Pat Dicken made a miraculous catch of a Stanislav pass.

The following week, the tables were turned in a night game against O'Connell. The talents of St?ve Orsini as a viciously effective linebacker were especially evident in this game. He was the leader of the Falcon defense that held the Knights in check for most of the game and preserved a slim 7-0 advan-

tage. When O ’Connell finally scored in the waning seconds of the contest, it was Orsini who jolted the ball loose from a Knight receiver in the end zone on the conversion.

Ro King’s 30-yard field goal was the winning margin when the Falcons battled McNamara on October 18 and emerged on top 9-7. On November 8, DeMatha’s Steve Adams drilled three field goals, one of which was a 47-yarder to boost the Stags past GC with an identical 9-7 score. Like the St. John’s and Carroll games, the team left Falcon Field physically drained and frustrated beyond words. They were determined, however, to end the season on a winning note against Gonzaga. And that they did. Fittingly enough, it was the defense that starred in a 10-0 shutout of the Eagles. Orsini, Shea and company completely neutralized Gonzaga offensive efforts.

Although the year contained more than its share of letdowns, Falcon football for 1975 was still a considerable success. The team tied for third place with DeMatha in the WMAC and placed four players — Stanislav, Shea, Kuzma and Orsini — on various newspaper all-star teams. It was indeed a season of hurrah and heartbreak, but, in the final analysis, there was more of the former. The 1975 Falcons suffered many pitfalls during the season, but they were always quick to rebound from the failures. Their resiliency is what insured their success, and made the year a memorable one for fan and player alike.

The fact that the Homecoming football game was postponed earlier that day due to a rain-soaked field did not deter approximately 100 couples from enjoying themselves on the night of October 11. The sounds of “ Inside Strait” a top Washington rock act, made the evening a memorable one for all who attended. The crowning of the Homecoming queen and court, as usual, was the highlight of the festivities. Kathy Barber of Holy Cross, accompanied by Frank Sturniolo, was voted queen of the event by the seniors. Bernadette Hodgson of B-CC, escorted by Tim Dec, and Holy Cross’ “Chickie” Connors, Greg Stack’s date, were named princesses. They were presented with bouquets of roses by Julie Ellrod, last year’s queen, and SAC President Jorge Lopez.

After a string of disappointing setbacks, the JV football team bounced back by taking their last two games of the season and finishing with a 3-4 record. The Falcons lost tight contests to McNamara and O’Connell, and absorbed defeats by Carroll and St. John’s before coming back to beat DeMatha and Gonzaga.

The team’s offense was led by center Mike Miller, quarterback Matt McArdle and running backs Pat Corbett and Terry Collins.

frosh cruise to 5-1-1 Good Counsel's freshman football team in 1975 was its best in years. The Baby Falcons lost only one league game (by 2 points to Carroll), and their record was good enough to place second in the WMAC. Among their victories was a satisfying 18-6 trouncing of St. John’s and an incredible comeback win over DeMatha that ranks as one of the most exciting games ever played on Falcon Field. Billy Simmel was the most electrifying player on the team. He scored all the Good Counsel points in the St. John’s game and took over at quarterback late in the year when Leo Leitner was injured. His talents and those of his teammates give the football program at GC tremendous potential for the next three years.

soccer season meets with success Good Counsel’s first soccer team ever compiled a creditable record of 6 wins and 8 losses during the 1975 season. The Falcon’s 6-6 mark in the WMAC placed them third in the conference behind frontrunning Carroll and St. John’s. Led by the efforts of seniors Jim Donahue, John Orchard, and Bill Toeller, Good Counsel posted impressive wins over St. John’s (2-0), Mackin (5-0) and DeMatha (2-1). Donahue, who scored 4 goals in the Mackin game, and Orchard paced the Falcon’s offensively with 12 and 5 goals, respectively. Fullback Toeller, who logged more on-the-field minutes than any other player (960) and goalie Jim Adrian anchored the GC defense.

Outstanding performances were also turned in by freshman Greg Schwartz (two goals) and junior Al Spencer (three goals). Head Coach Art Iwanicki was very proud of the fact that the first-year team was representative of all four classes.

The team’s early season success eased the disappointment of losing their last four games. The Falcons absorbed a 7-0 pounding by league champion Carroll and then suffered narrow losses to Gonzaga, DeMatha and St. John’s. "Inexperience was the main reason for our last four defeats," explained Coach Iwanicki.

The fact that only seven members of the team graduated will make Coach Iwanicki’s job an easier one next season. Schwartz, Spencer, and other underclassmen who contributed to the success of the team will make up the backbone of next fall’s soccer Falcons.

It was this year’s seniors who blazed the trail for all future Good Counsel soccer teams by providing the nucleus of the ’75 Falcons. Mr. Iwanicki remarked that he will “really miss those seniors that graduated.

For a first-year team, we won six games, which is six more than we expected.” The efficiency of Toeller and Donahue’s deft offensive thrusts were especially important in realizing the team’s full potential. Their accomplishments and those of Orchard, Adrian and others have established soccer as a permanent fixture in the Good Counsel community for years to come.

cross country team claims wmac crown On the way to capturing the WMAC Cross Country Championships, the Falcon runners prepped themselves by winning four out of eight dual meets, defeating the likes of St. John’s, McNamara, Poolesville and Pallotti. Coaches Kevin Nolan and Brother Dan Dougherty brought the whole team along to the point where they were ready to place 4th out of 12 in the Metro-Catholics and then take the coveted WMAC title. Junior Mark Colburn and Sophomore Ed Walsh paced the Falcons in this meet, taking first and second place.

Important contributions were also turned in by Frosh sensation Frank Lozupone and Junior Ken Bentz who gave the team a surprising amount of depth. Mike Brenyo was the only senior on the squad, giving Coach Nolan a nucleus of potentially outstanding young runners for next season. In fact, it appeared likely that Good Counsel would retain possession of its league championship for many years to come.

the mousetrap For the Fall Production, the Consortium Drama Club tackled Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap. The Drama Club’s new director, Mr. Gary Stein, and a cast of eight well-chosen performers, rehearsed for over six weeks and the final product was one of the Consortium’s best fall plays in years. The cast could not have done their superb job without the backing of the equally important Technical Director, Mr. Steven Wappel, and with the help of G.C.’s art teacher, Mr. Michael Heilman, a breathtaking and realistic set was produced. This masterpiece of a set served as the Monkswell Manor Guest House, in which the cast solved Agatha Christie’s artistic theatrical achievement of a murder mystery.

SYNOPSIS Mr. Giles Ralston (Vincent Church) and his lovely bride, Mrs. Mollie Ralston (Mary Margaret Sarsfield), have just opened Monkswell Manor Guest House.

Their guest list is odd and varied; it included: the eccentric Christopher Wren (Walter Tappe), the imperious Mrs. Boyle (Alisa Rohan), the typically-Britishmilitary Major Metcalf (Joseph Dooley), the self-contained, but oddly masculine Miss Casewell (Nancy Quinn), and the devious Italian Mr. Paravacini (Russell Cox). In spite of the impassable snow drifts and lack of communication, Detective Sgt. Trotter (John Berry) manages to ski to the Guest House. Trotter informs them that a psychopathic killer is on the rampage avenging his brother’s murder, and that there is substantial evidence that the killer is in the Guest House. He adds that certain persons in the Guest House may have had connections with the

death of the killer’s brother. His suspicions prove to be correct as Mrs. Boyle is killed at the end of Act I. Tensions grow and everyone has his eye suspiciously on everyone else. Husband turns against wife and the Guest House becomes a jungle in which everyone must prove his innocence. The awesome truth is revealed as Trotter exposes himself as the murderer and pounces on Mrs. Ralston with his hands in a death grip around her throat. Miss Casewell and Maj. Metcalf rush to the rescue and Miss Casewell calms Trotter down and gives him a sedative. Maj. Metcalf reveals his true identity as that of a detective and says he was suspicious of Trotter all along. He gives his condolences for the inconvenience and cheerfully life continues at Monkswell Manor Guest House.

Good Counsel’s swim team has been the most successful part of its interscholastic sports program.

In 1976, the Falcons captured first place in the Washington Metropolitan Swimming Championships for the second year in a row. The following was excerpted from a conversation with team members Alan Stevens, Jeff Cuddeback and Frank Bossong whose contributions to the team were a major part of their success for the last four years.

FALCON: How did the swim team first get started?

AL: It was at first a shot in the dark. Brother Bonaventure decided he wanted to try it since there were enough people here that wanted to swim and were good enough to have a team.

Now, the team is six years old. In the third and fourth years, we placed second in the Metros and the last two years we’ve won it. W e’re the only school to repeat and take the title two years in a row. No other team has scored the amount of points we did this year (199).

FALCON: Why has the team been so successful?

JEFF: W e’ve put a lot of work into it.

FRANK: Swimming takes more hours of training than almost any other sport.

AL: We train 101/2-11 months a year. Sometimes three or four hours before school and every night after school, plus weekends. It goes like that all through the winter and summer. W e’ve got a high devotion to this. Plus, we all have the same common interests with each other. We go out together and spend all our time together. I guess it is a clique, but we all have that common cause behind us. Most importantly, we’re all close friends.

FALCON: What makes the team different from the other sports at Good Counsel?

AL: As far as the team’s success is concerned — each individual race is for personal best times, but when the final score comes in, it’s the score of everybody’s performance. First place in an event is nice, but it’s those seconds, thirds and fourths that win a meet for you.

FALCON: Why do you think the swim team has not received the same recognition from the students as

some of the other sports?

JEFF: It's not a big spectator sport. Everyone can get real excited watching a football or baseball game.

You have nine players on the field at once where for us there is only one and it doesn’t seem as teamoriented.

FALCON: After you leave, what happens to GC swimming?

FRANK: W e’ll keep on winning. W e’ve got sophomores and juniors that are really good.

AL: I agree. Plus, we have good incoming freshmen.

JEFF: The whole conference will be weaker next year, too. We may drop a couple of places, but we’ll be right up there.

AL: Honestly speaking — maybe it is a little biased on our part — I don’t think there will be a team as strong as the one we had this year. They said that three years ago when we graduated a couple of seniors, though.

FALCON: What have been the sacrifices involved in swimming for a large part of your lives?

FRANK: Actually the sacrifice isn’t for the kids, it’s for the parents. If you’ve been swimming from age six to sixteen, that's ten years of driving to meets, picking up, timing, late dinners, etc. It’s really the parents who sacrifice.

FALCON: What are your plans for next year?

FRANK: Well, I’ve been swimming for eleven years and I’m quitting for now. I'll decide in September if I'll swim at Maryland.

JEFF: I’m definitely still swimming in college. I’m going to Gettysburg and I’m looking forward to a good season there.

AL: Fortunately for me, swimming will put me through college. I have to keep swimming. I’ll be down at N.C. State with the Wolfpack. I’m really looking forward to it.

FALCON: What role have your coaches had in your success?

AL: Bill (Ratcliffe) and Bob (Greenleaf) have been more than coaches to us. W e’ve been friends.

They’ve been a great part of Good Counsel’s success.

frustrated falcons find victory elusive in ’75-76 Adjusting to a new system and style of play can be a difficult process for a high school basketball team. Such was the case for Good Counsel’s varsity during the ’75-’76 season. The Falcons never recovered from the sting of some early season losses and came away with only 7 victories in 27 tries, the worst record in the school’s history. Even the presence of Bill Dankos, who broke all existing school records for scoring and rebounding, could not lift the team above mediocrity.

From the beginning, the Falcons betrayed an inability to adjust to the type of basketball that first-year coach Doug Dieringer demanded of them. This resulted in some surprising early season losses to Southern and Peary. But, by the time of the Walt Whitman Christmas Classic, the team seemed to have regained some of its composure. Behind stellar performances by Dankos and Dave Payne, Good Counsel knocked off Paint Branch, ranked among the top five scholastic teams in the area at the time, in the opening round. Then, unexpectedly, the Falcons lost the tournament’s championship game to Walter Johnson. 67-50. From there the varsity’s fortune took a decided turn for the worse. They dropped games to vastly inferior teams like Rockville and Einstein and took their usual clubbing from Catholic League powers DeMatha, Mackin and St. John’s. The Falcons’ only notable success in the second half of their season was a 62-51 victory over Gonzaga, but the Eagles soon avenged that defeat by beating Good Counsel handily in a second game.

The curious thing about Good Counsel basketball in 75-76 was that the team was competitive in almost every game it played. They played evenly with almost all their opponents for a quarter or two, even giving DeMatha and Mackin brief scores. But when the crucial moments came that decided the outcomes of games, the Falcons seemed to lack the poise and intensity needed to put a team away.

Eventually, the countless close losses created a “snowball” effect.

With each succeeding game, the team became more and more dispirited. The Falcons’ losing streak when the season ended reached 12 games.

In December, Good Counsel looked, on paper at least, like a team that could win 20 or more games and compete for second or third in the WMAC. The mediocre season that the Falcons experienced was doubly disappointing because it suggested that there were few talented ballplayers on the team. This was deceiving. Dankos was Good Counsel’s best basketball player ever. Payne was a model of consistency, even though he was hampered by a leg injury for most of the season. With a hot hand, Bob Wigmore and Mike Bowe were among the deadliest shooters in the league. Jim Kuzma was an aggressive defensive player and playmaker. Juniors Bill Egan and Dan Wallace gave promise of developing into outstanding front court players. Tom Whelan and Brian McKenna filled in nicely coming off the bench.

Why then was the team unable to turn the talents of these players into victories on the court? The psychological block that the Falcons seemingly developed after losing some pivotal games early in the season certainly was a factor, as was the lack of experience of a new coach working with a new team.

But it would be wrong to blame the disaster of the ’75-’76 season on any one coach or player. This is the easy way out, because it does not take into account the many complex reasons that resulted in a 7-20 record.

For the upcoming year, the coaching staff and underclassmen on the team are left with the challenge of picking up the pieces of the basketball program at Good Counsel and instilling it with a winning spirit once again. With a year of experience under Coach Dieringer’s belt and with Bowe, Egan and Wallace, among others, having experienced the grueling competition of WMAC basketball, the task may not be as difficult as it seems. The lesson of this year’s team is that sometimes intangible elements — cooperation and team spirit — are more effective ways of achieving success than the most talented basketball players. Hopefully, it is a lesson that will remain with GC’s athletic program for a long time.

dankos brings class, talent to court

The 1975-76 basketball season might have' been highly forgettable save for the efforts of one Good Counsel senior whose superlative play during the year was in sharp contrast to the disappointing performance of the team. Bill Dankos, the Falcons’ 6-foot-5 forward, finished his varsity career having surpassed the 1,400 mark in points and rebounds, both school records. He was named to several newspaper All-Met teams and became the first Good Counsel player ever to participate in the prestigious Capital Classic high school all-star game. When the season ended, Dankos was heavily recruited by major universities from all over the East Coast. He finally settled on a four-year grant-in-aid to attend Penn State.

Aside from being the finest product of Good Counsel’s basketball program in the eighteen years of its existence, Bill Dankos brought a special grace and dignity to the game that made his exploits on the court a pleasure to watch. The sight of “Gus” swatting away an opponent's shot and sinking countless baskets will linger in the minds of his classmates for a long time. With these memories goes the confidence that he will make a success of his life, on and off the basketball floor.

jv weathers a difficult year The junior varsity basketball team's season paralleled that of their varsity counterpart in many ways. They were unable to put together a string of victories and were victimized by the always brutal WMAC schedule. Although their 7-14 record was not spectacular, first-year coach Terry Killen did succeed in developing some potential varsity stars. Bob Mayo and Jim Canty gave promise that they would be a devastating forward duo in the future.

Terry Rooney and Joe Hollister were consistent performers at guard. Tom Loveless showed he has the makings of a swingman with a deadly shooting touch. When these five players combined their talents, the junior varsity was a well-disciplined squad that gave outstanding performances on the court. Unfortunately, such developments were all too rare for Coach Killen’s JV Falcons in 1975-76.

frosh battle to 9-8 record The Freshman basketball team, coached by Good Counsel graduate Mike Berrang, was the only one of the school’s three roundball squads to post a winning record. Tim Peifer, Tom McNiff and Teddy Martin paced the Baby Falcons to important league victories over Gonzaga, McNamara and Carroll.

Peifer’s shooting, M cNiff’s playmaking and the all-around play of Martin gave Coach Berrang a solid nucleus to build around. The team was handicapped all season by a lack of rebounding strength, but made up for it with their quickness and shooting ability.

Good Counsel's wrestling team finished the ’75-’76 season with a winning 7-6 re c o rd . Th e g ra p p le rs finished second in the WMAC and third in the Tristate Catholic Championships. In dual matches, they defeated league rivals St. John’s and Carroll by overw h e l m i n g s c o r e s a nd soundly trounced such non-league opposition as St. Alban’s, St. Mary’s and Bullis. Although they finished second to McNamara in the WMAC tournament, the team made an impressive showing as Steve Miller, Steve Flum, and Brendan Sweeney, among others, captured first place in their respective weight classes.

The Falcon wrestlers of '75’76 were composed heavily of underclassm en, and coach Pat Bates has high hopes that the team will build on its success next year.

sac, consortium leaders try to revitalize student government 1975-’76 was a landmark year for student government in the consortium schools. Both in quality and quantity, the events sponsored by the Consortium Council and Good Counsel’s Student Activities Council were memorable. Consortium President Tad Schwartz and Vice-President Pat Clancy scored a coup when they lured the “Nighthawks” , one of Washington’s top rock acts, to Good Counsel for a dance. Schwartz and Clancy also organized a successful Christmas Formal, as well as other dances and coffee houses scattered throughout the year. Good Counsel’s SAC, under the leadership of President Jorge Lopez, also broke new ground when they sponsored the first rock concert at the school in over four years. The concert, starring the widely praised Rosslyn Mountain Boys was a cultural if not financial success. SAC also increased the number of dances during the course of the year and staged many worthwhile cultural events. Participation in student government meetings was enthusiastic. Lopez stated at the end of his term that he was “personally satisfied” with the accomplishments of the year.

Good Counsel’s Speech & Debate squad endured a tough season this past year. With few individuals competing, GC managed to qualify only one team, Seniors Mike Penfield and Tom English, for area debate finals. In speech, three team members gained the finals: Senior Tony Visk in Original Oratory, Junior Steve Michael in Extemp, and English in Extemp and Original Oratory. English qualified for the Nationals in both categories, finishing second in Extemp and seventh in Original Oratory.

Under the direction of its coach, John Hurson, a Good Counsel alumnus who graduated from Georgetown this past June, the team did more traveling than in the previous year. Two trips were made up to the New York area to compete in the Hendrick Hudson High School and the St. Peter’s College tournaments.

They put in respectable showings in both cases.

Although the club is losing most of its members through graduation, and influx of eager freshmen and the continued performance of the remaining members will assure a solid season for 1976-1977.

Good Counsel’s Political Science Club, with its moderator and driving force, Mr. Patrick Redington, held G C’s first Mock Democratic Convention on May 7, 1976 in the school gym. On the third ballot, Hubert Humphrey defeated Jerry Brown in a close contest. There were a minimum of smokedfilled rooms but the tension and dramatics of a real convention were certainly present.

The opening session, attended by over 200 delegates, including sizeable contingents from Holy Cross, Holy Names and Ursuline, commenced at 10:30 p.m. with speeches by several Maryland political figures. These stressed the necessity of youth involvement in the electoral process. Lanny Davis, Eugene Zander, Lucille Maurer, both members of the Maryland House of Delegates, and C. Lawrence Weiser, a Md. State Senator, addressed themselves to this concern.

The second session began shortly after seven with the majority of the delegates returning. The platform, stressing jobs, housing and the environment was given final approval and then the focus shifted to the nomination of a presidential candidate.

As the various campaign directors placed their candidates in nomination, the delegates settled down to make a final choice. Julian Wolfe delivered the Udall nomination while Ed Clark spoke for Jimmy Carter and Lou Kratz asked the gathering to support George Wallace. Sterling Munro argued for Jackson and Pat Bresette nominated Jerry Brown. Tony Visk advocated Ellen McCormack.

On the first ballot, Brown headed the list with Carter second and the other candidates far down the line. A second ballot was necessary as Brown did not come close to the 155 votes needed for a simple majority.

Just before the second ballot, some shifts occurred in the list of potential nominees as a result of machinations during the recess. Hubert Humphrey was put in nomination along with Edward Kennedy, who was nominated as a favorite son from Massachusetts by Gigi Byron of Holy Cross.

Carter and Jackson dropped out, throwing their support to Humphrey.

At the end of the second ballot, Brown still led, followed closely by HHH. All other candidates trailed far behind. A ten minute recess was held before the third ballot. The pro-Humphrey group, headed

by Lou Kratz and Ed Clark, and the Brown supporters, led by Pat Bresette, each conferred in separate corners.

Just before the start of the vote in the third ballot, Wallace, Udall and Kennedy dropped out in favor of Humphrey. It had clearly become a twoman race.

As the third ballot wound to a finish, the tension mounted. The lead changed hands several times as Tom English called the roll and vote-counters Jose Cofino and Joan Kenney raced over their tally sheets.

At the end, it was up to the two states which had passed, Michigan and Minnesota, to decide the nominee. Humphrey led by only a handfull of votes. Michigan, with thirteen delegates, and its chairman, Walter Tappe, were given the responsibility of putting one of the candidates over the top.

There was an expectant hush as Tappe approached the microphone. And then pandemonium broke loose as Michigan calmly cast twelve of its votes for Hubert Humphrey, clinching the nomination for him. Minnesota concluded by adding its support to the nominee. The final count was Humphrey — 165, Brown — 140.

Brown was picked as the Vice-Presidential nominee by acclamation as an exhausted convention would up its proceedings at 11:30 P.M. The tired conventioneers then adjourned to Pop’s in search of a real Democratic “Party” .

oh, those seventh-inning blues!

If the league rules had been changed to permit only 6 innings of play, Good Counsel’s varsity baseball team in 1976 might have lost only 2 or 3 games.

It was a trifle discomforting for the players on the team to realize this, since it was convincing evidence that their losing season was a direct result of carelessness in the late innings rather than any lack of talent. The Falcons did manage to win 7 games in the WMAC, which placed them third in the conference for the second straight year. However, in non-league competition, the team could muster only one victory in eight attempts. Bad breaks and sloppy; fielding did in Good Counsel in almost all of those games.

Pitching was another sore spot throughout the season. At times, the team’s fortunes seemed literally to rest on the right arm of senior Steve Stanislav.

Stanislav pitched superbly all year long, but, more often than not, he was a victim of blatant errors by his teammates. The forte of the '76 Falcons was their hitting prowess. Both second baseman Steve Orsini and catcher-outfielder Tino Monaldo batted. .333.

Shortstop Dean Francis and third baseman Tim Dec also were consistent at the plate. In addition, the performances of three sophomores and a freshman on the team were a pleasant surprise to head coach John McCarthy. Jim Canty had aeveloped into a firstrate catcher by the end of the season. Sophs Mark Davis and Jamie Burke were, occasional starters in the infield. And Terry Collins, the' first freshman ever on a Good Counsel varsity baseball team, was valuable to the squad as a pinch-runner and reserve outfielder.

Typical of the setbacks that the Falcons experienced were three games with eventual league champ St. John's. The Cadets won all three contests — by a total of 4 runs. Only in games against DeMatha, Carroll, and McNamara did Good Counsel realize its full potential. Home runs by Monaldo, Orsini, and Canty powered the team past the Mustangs, 5-1. Francis and Mike Lozupone teamed up to stop Carroll, 6-2. Against DeMatha, Monaldo and Stanislav blasted homers in an 11-1 romp.

Amid all the frsutration that characterized their season, the baseball Falcons of 1976 retained a camaraderie that made their year enjoyable despite the losses on the field. Coach McCarthy and Assistant Coach Paul DeStefano were constant sources of encouragement to the players, and helped keep the morale of their charges high. In the end, each player was convinced that he knew the full meaning of the word “team.'’

losing season fails to deter jv’s spirit Despite losing all but six of their games in 1976, the JV baseball team was a competitive squad that did not lose heart in the face of defeat. Coached by the irrepressible Bro. Barry Fitzpatrick, the team was composed of about twenty scrappy sophomores and freshmen who maintained their sense of humor and combative spirit throughout the season. Among their five victories were wins over perrenial Virginia power O ’Connell and league rivals Carroll and McNamara. In another encounter, the Falcons also achieved a 2-2 tie with O ’Connell.

falcons capture track title Of all sports, none is more physically demanding on participants than track and field. Good Counsel’s 1976 track team met the challenge of the exhausting hours of practice in extraordinary fashion. Both as a team and in individual performances, the Falcons achieved unprecedented success, winning the WMAC track title and breaking or tying five school records.

Senior Dennis Marchitelli led a select group of sprinters that set new standards in the running events. Marchitelli smashed the 100-yard mark with a clocking of 9.7 and tied the record of 22.3 in the 220-yard dash. In addition, he anchored the 440-and 880-yard relay teams that forged two new marks in those events. The 440-yard team, also composed of Noel Patel, Bill Witte and John Poulos, was especially outstanding, as it captured first place in the WMAC Championships. A fourth school record was set by the mile relay team of Witte, Mike Stanton, Phil Kafarakis and Poulos who turned in a time of 3:33.2 in the event.

Junior Jerry Siok shattered the fifth mark when he blazed over the 330-yard hurdles in 41.9.

Unquestionably, the ’76 Falcons were GC’s best track team ever. Aside from their triumph in the WMAC meet, in which they trounced runner-up Carroll by over 20 points, the team defeated McNamara, Wootton, St. John’s and Sherwood, among others. Furthermore, they finished second in the prestigious Maryland Private School Championships. The coaching staff was justifiably proud of the accomplishments of the team at the conclusion of the season.

The ’76 track team had seen their strenuous efforts rewarded in the form of unqualified success in every phase of competition.

In the past few years, the golf team has quietly played winning golf. The team has compiled a 52-8-1 record over the past six years, a record envied by other GC Varsity teams.

This year’s team was no exception. Led by first year coach Bro. Bernard Starkey, they posted a 9-3 record and for the sixth straight year, reached the Private School League Playoffs. After nipping No. 1 seed Ireton in the first round, the team faced formidable Gerogetown Prep. In a seesaw match which could have gone eigher way, the golfers lost for the fourth straight year to Prep by a 5-4 score. Not all was lost, however, for almost the entire team returns next year and, with experience under their belts, they promise to do even better next season.

By any conventional standard, Good Counsel’s tennis team had a mediocre season in 1976. The team won only 8 of 22 matches, although they did capture 6 of 10 contests against WMAC opponents. The long hours of practice on the court and the sometimes equally long matches benefitted the players because it helped them sharpen their skills for future competition. Coach Terry Killen had no pretensions that his team, in only its second year of existence at GC, would do well against much more experienced opponents. To compensate for this, he scheduled a large number of matches to improve the talents of his players. As a result of this decision, a number of players, especially Sophomore Chip Cunningham, appear ready to become outstanding tennis players in the years ahead.

dames at sea After serious Consortium trouble, prospects for a successful Spring musical seemed slight, but the determined Drama Club pushed aside these staggering setbacks and created a lively and colorful smash hit.

Expertly directed by Ray Porter, Dames at Sea set newer and higher standards for future shows. Along with extremely talented girls from Holy Names and Holy Cross, Dames starred Good Counsel’s finest performers — our best singer, Dennis Angulo; our best dancer, Jimmie Hoover; and our most superb actor, John Berry — along with Joseph Dooley in the cast and skilled novices in the chorus. The Technical Crews surpassed the exquisiteness of previous productions. Under the leadership of Miss Horan, Mr. Porter, and Gary Cheimis, elaborate scenes such as an oriental temple, a battleship, and a matterhorn were labored over and professionally mastered. Dames at Sea will be remembered mostly for the light spirited feeling it created in the hearts of the audience.

After the reknown Broadway vamp, Mona Kent (Kathy Gallagher), rehearses her Wall Street number with the chorus girls, she stomps off the stage in a rage because her director, Mr. Hennesey (Joseph Dooley), avoided telling her the truth about the loud blasts and occasionally falling bricks in the theater.

Reminded by Joan (Rosie Adami) that they need another chorus girl, Hennesey hires shy and innocent Ruby (Mary Beth Corcoran). Alone on stage and famished, Ruby faints as Dick (Dennis Angulo) runs on and catches her. They sing It’s You, expressing how they have just fallen in love. Joan escorts Ruby off to try on her costume and Dick sings of how he has found his Broadway Baby. Mona enters and is impressed with Dick’s ability. He confesses he is really a song writer and Mona persuades him to let her sing one of his songs, That Mister Man of Mine.

Then, she lures Dick into her dressing room to discuss his portfolio. Lucky (Jimmie Hoover) rushes on calling for Dick as Joan runs on yelling for Mr. Hennessey. Recognizing each other as old lovers, they sing Choo-Choo Honeymoon in which Joan forces the carefree Lucky to propose. Dick assures Ruby that even though Mona has eyes for him, he has eyes only for Ruby. Content with his love, Ruby sings Sailor of My Dreams. Mona implores Dick to sing another of his songs, so he and Lucky chime in on Singapore Sue. The loud blasts about which Mona asked Hennesey earlier continue and when a bulldozer heads for the lobby, Hennesey is forced to tell everyone that they’re tearing down the theater. In order to cheer him up, Joan sings Good Times Are Here To Stay. Dick offers his battleship as a place to

put on the show, but Lucky says the Captain will object. Mona declares she can handle any man, even the Captain. With the show opening on schedule an enthusiastic cast reprises Good Times Are Here To Stay!

Act II opens on the battleship with Dick and Lucky persuading the Captain (John Berry) for some Dames at Sea. Although he is taken up in the idea, his final answer is “ no." Mona comes on board and when she and the Captain see each other, they sing The Beguine and re-kindle their once hot romance. The Captain leaves for a moment and Mona lures Dick into her arms. Ruby and the Captain both see them and although the Captain is furious, Ruby is hurt.

She sings It's Raining in My Heart to express her inner grief since Dick fell for Mona. Dick convinces Ruby that There’s Something About You and she forgives him. Mona then dictates that Ruby shall not be in the show. Ruby thinks Dick has betrayed her and reprises It’s Raining in My Heart. Because of her cruelty to Ruby, Joan and Lucky plan to cook Mona’s goose. The ship is made ready and the show opens with Mona’s first number, The Echo Waltz. At the end of the number, Lucky sways the spotlight back and forth across the stage and as Mona runs to catch it she becomes green with sea-sickness. With Mona flat on her back it seems the show won’t go on, but Dick, Lucky, Joan, and Mr. Hennesey beg Ruby to take her place. Ruby fearfully agrees and in a huge cast production, she goes on as the Star Tar of the Navy.

Ruby saves the day and the show and admitting to Dick how foolish she’s been, they lead the entire cast in Let’s Have A Simple Wedding.

The address of Patrick Liam Clancy, '76, to his classmates and their families and friends during commencement exercises:

Members of the administration, Mr. Colby, members of the faculty, family and friends, fellow members of the Class of 1976: Four years ago we gathered as a couple hundred scared and rather disoriented Freshmen. I think it is very fitting that we assemble to conclude and celebrate those good years, together once again, in more ways than before. This time we are not just part of the Class of '76 — we are much more than just members of the same class.

Throughout those four rapid and frequently confusing years we have gone through many stages that all young people at one time or another face. But unlike all young people, we have seen these stages of growth with that special view of togetherness. We have been side by side through good times as well as the rough times. This creates a unique friendship that will never fade with the yearbook pages. This will bind us much closer and much longer than any label as Class of ’76.

These four years were intended to be a learning experience also, and I believe we found more than friendship awaiting us. We found a new, different and exciting world, a world that did not always agree with us, a world that often frustrated us. Much of what we learned, we learned not through our success, but through our failures and frustrations. I believe those failures were every bit as important as the successes, for as the poet once said, “ . . . before you learn to fly, learn how to f al l . . . ” . We have seen that many of those institutions established before us failed us as well as benefitted us, but this too is a major part of growing and understanding our future role.

We have grown too as the result of many positive influences, the influences of a Christian community. We have witnessed not just an abstract, spiritual Christianity, but the Christianity of everyday life; the Christianity of good relationships and bad, of pleasant times and hassles and other normal ups-and-downs. We have seen, with great difficulty at times, the Christianity of a Monday morning at 8:00 A.M. This is the Christian difference that we will bring with us in our future.

The non-school world has brought itself to bear on us very strongly. Certainly history will never forget those four years, the neither will we. We are the last of Good Counsel’s graduating classes to witness Viet Nam. We are really the first to be educated in the Watergate mentality. Many of our traditional establishments have been seriously questioned. We must recognize that our education came from the Washington Post as well as textbooks, from Haynes Johnson and Doonesbury as well as our faculty.

I believe that as a class we have good reason to be proud. I think that Good Counsel and our class are the best, and I am very proud to have been a member of it. We should carry this pride with us and let it show in everything we will do from here.

On the wall of the headquarters of Pride, Inc., at 16th and U Streets there is a mural that boldly proclaims “The world belongs to those who prepare for it’’. Friends, the world belongs to us. Because through all we have been, we have learned too much not to care.

Hopefully, we have learned too much not to care. Hopefully, we have learned a lot about ourselves, about real Christianity, about friendship. Hopefully, we have learned how to fall as well as fly.

We have been shaped by many, many influences in our past. But just as we have been shaped by the past, it is we who must shape the future.
