Man — the social animal.

It is a man who can experience loneliness, it is a man who can experience love —- two emotions th a t are the source of a' person’s agony and joy.

Friendship cannot be bought; it cannot be forced; it cannot be asked for. Friendship is given, and friendship gives. A friend offers loyalty, understanding, compassion •— a friend offers himself.

A person does not speak his love for another with words if th a t love is genuine. Rather, love m anifests itself, in small affairs as well as large — helping with homework, w riting a letter, holding a rap session.

Any action done for another says to th a t person S- “I love you.”

Man is a social animal — not through reason alone, but through an instinct, a desire, a need.

A man. is remembered for more than w hat he says. He is made of more than words — ideas, emotions, beliefs are in his makeup as well; they convey the person to those who know him.

More is learned in the classroom than cold information, more is learned than simple facts.

The teacher is human, is a person — his living is a source of learning. The teacher who becomes a colorless machine will not be remembered; it is the man who shows himself th a t acquires an identity with those whom he has taught.

A book has no personality.

A television is lifeless.

A man who can call himself teacher can call himself human — a person.

When Good Counsel’s new principal arrived in W heaton last August, the most frequently asked questions were “W hat do you think it’ll be like a t school?” and “Do you think anything new will happen?” Simply put, things began to happen. Coming to his first principalship equipped with a variety of background and facing the operation of a school with an established good reputation, Brother Bonaventure joined hands with Brothers John Wills and Anthony Strom berg in a concerted effort to reach out to the hands of students, their parents, and their teachers. The goal of the new adm inistration was set: a dynamic process of growth among all the school community.

Practically speaking, more courses were planned and activities were expanded; the fotm er took the form of a rt and music, and the latter involved an expansion of the athletic program with a new and first swimming team. There was an obvious effort to renew and encourage a love for learning, to have the school day occur in an atmosphere of responsible freedom, and to allow Christianity to perm eate the activities and persons of the school community.

With Brother Bonaventure’s arrival, things began to happen; they continued to happen throughout the year. And future plans indicate no lessening of the original goal of grow th among students, parents, and teachers in the Christian educational process, a process which is inherently dynamic, flowing, and vital a t Good Counsel in the ’70’s.

Silver Jubilarians

In August, 1945, the United States celebrated the end of World W ar II. Six months later on February 15, 1946, three young men entered the Congregation of the Brothers of St. Francis and began their two-year period of form ation a t the Sacred H eart Noviate in Old Point Comfort, Virginia. They were members of the largest class to enter the Congregation afte r the Second World War. Twenty-five years later in Silver Spring, Maryland, these three men celebrated the 25th Anniversary of their entrance into religious life. During the past quarter-century, these men grew as persons, as Christians, as religious, and as friends to those who came to know them as Brothers Maron, Bonaventure, and Giles.

Brother Maron Higdon comes from Hawsville, Kentucky, and tau g h t for six years a t F laget High School in Louisville.

His next assignment found him at Keith Academy in Lowell, Massachusetts, where he tau g h t English and directed an annual Minstrel Show for two years before coming to Good Counsel. He has been with us for the past nine years devoting his major efforts to the fields of English and Library Science.

Calling Baltimore his family home, Brother Bonaventure Scully first tau g h t a t St. John’s Prep in Danvers, Massachusetts for one year. For the next six years, he was assigned to St. Xavier High School in Louisville, and followed th a t assignment with twelve years’ teaching a t Xaverian High School in Brooklyn. During the years of his work before coming to Good Counsel, he taught chemistry and religion, served as a counselor in the guidance field, worked with the Cursillo and Encounter Movements in the Diocese of Brooklyn, coordinated retreats in a seven-state area in the East, and labored in the field as the Province Vocations director for the Xaverian Brothers during the two years prior to coming to Good Counsel.

Brother Giles Crowell, now teaching a t St. Xavier High School in Louisville, was a familiar and friendly person around the Good Counsel scene for four years. He taught French, was the golf and w restling coach, was the Moderator of the Student Activities Council, and a friend to many alumni who still recall the good times they had with him in Wheaton. Brother Giles’ first assignment was at Flaget High School in Louisville, followed by service at St. Joseph’s in Bardstown, Kentucky, Ryken High School in Leonardtown, and Good Counsel. During this time and for sixteen summers, he was the Director of Camp Calvert in Leonardtown. When he has time available, he returns to Newton Highlands, Massachusetts to visit with his family.

Friendship does not happen — it is made. I t does not occur in a classroom alone — nor does it occur in a locker room, or an office, or a t any sort of meeting.

Friendship cannot be broken down, com partm entalized, so easily. The classroom, the locker room, the rock concert, the rap session — all are parts of the whole. Each is a piece of living, all are life. And the person who stands alone is dead.

W hat is a rock concert played for only one? W hat good are good times with no one to share them? Happiness becomes g reater when more than one experiences it is such with any p art of a m an’s life.

In fulfillm ent of numerous promises for a b etter social season, SAC sponsored four dances and two rock concerts during the year. Despite sporadic attendance, this year proved to have been SAC’s biggest financial success ever.

While poor attendance marred the four dances, the two concerts which were m et with enthusiastic student response, highlighted the social calendar.

Over 1500 enlightened heads drifted in for the first happening on January 23, grooving to the heavy sounds of Crank, Sageworth & Drums, Rockinghorse, and Good Counsel’s own Freedom. This last group was composed of Doc Carrier, Dave Pulzone, John Vengrouskie, Bill Carey, and Eric Smith.

A t the March 20 concert, an over-capacity crowd of more than 2000 ecstatic students, dates, and friends, who waited im patiently for half an hour while a light show was being set up, were rewarded with the competitive sounds of Tractor, Crank, and New Breed.

This concert grossed over $4000, while hundreds of latecomers were turned away a t the door.

The unprecedented success of the two rock concerts provided SAC with the means for profits in the fu ture, as well as a complement to such m ainstay events as the Homecoming, Thanksgiving, and Christmas dances.

Drug Inform ation D ay Going along with the trend of unique education a t Good Counsel this year, a Drug Inform ation Day was sponsored in February. The intention behind the program was to inform students about the possible harm involved with drugs, due to growing concern over the G.C. drug problem. Subjects ranged from m arijuana to heroin to barbituates to alchoholism. Several persons came from various organizations to speak on these subjects, some of them form er addicts. The U.S. Navy Medical D epartm ent also loaned an exhibit on cannabis and its variations, more commonly known as grass or hash. A g reat deal of student interest was vested in Mrs. Jean Mack, a recovered alchoholic who works with the Montgomery County Health Department. Despite the usual list of “absentees,” the day was an unusual but more than interesting and inform ative one.

Satisfaction in any task becomes greater when th at task is shared, because then some part of the self is shared. The unknown, isolated accomplishment becomes hollow by comparison, its rewards pale.

The script for Hello, Dolly! is a bright promise indeed. Hello, Dolly! is one of the most widely acclaimed and universally honored musicals in the history of the American stage.

I t’s 1:45 A.M. a t my house, and the 1971 edition of the Falcon is being put to bed. There are still a few things to be done, and those staff members who are not at work with their paying jobs (or a t the beach!) are taking care of their respective sections.

There are a lot of things which can be said about the past year, b u t I ’m going to state the opinion of anyone who has ever been editor of a yearbook — I ’m glad it’s over. I could sta rt w riting about all the glorious times and fantastic people the yearbook allowed me to experience, but that wouldn’t be an honest depiction of how it feels when a twelve-month job is finally over.

I found myself asking all year long and especially when things got particularly dismal (which they did about 95% of the time) why I myself or anyone else would ever get involved in a lot of behind-the-scenes slave labor, receive little or no recognition, lousy pay, and work rotten hours (especially in June!).

The answer is one word long — satisfaction. There is a justifiable am ount of pride in being able to point at this book and claim some part in it. And despite the headaches, worries, and emotional traum as, despite the fact that I ’m happiest now th a t it’s all behind me at last, it was worth it.

Despite predictions of a poor season, the 1970 Varsity Football Team managed a winning 5-4-1 season. Having lost 14 of last year’s starters to graduation and three of this year’s squad to injuries, Coach Guida had to work with only a handful of returnees and those coming up from the J.V. Despite these setbacks, GC became known for its fourth-quarter come-from-behind victories over High Point, Loyola, Gonzaga and Churchill. Strong individual performances by seniors Skip Dabbs, Mike Whittles and Frank and Dick Page, and juniors John Griffin and John Coan were the key to Falcon victories.

Coan was the leading rusher with 650 yards on 175 carries. Griffin was the WMAC’s second leading passer with 77 completions in 141 attem pts for a 54% average and 950 yard; Credit also w ent to Skip Dabbs, a leading receiver in the WMAC, who made several outstanding catches when they were needed most. The defensive effort was outstanding in most games with leading performances by Whittles and the Page brothers, while the defensive backfield equalled last year’s effort of intercepting a total of 11 passes. The team ’s final record, while not spectacular, exceeded pre-season expectations.

The 1970 J.V. Falcons could easily be described as a team with an explosive offense and a stingy defense. When the season s ta rted, it was doubtful w hether an inexperienced, predominantly sophomore backfield could lift the team to a victorious season. But Bob McCarthy proved to be an able leader as well as a quarterback with a quick mind and lightning arm. McCarthy, along with runners Dan Kolar and Mike Bosco, were instrum ental in sparking the offense. Sophomore end Chris Giusti also was a seoring threat, snagging fifteen passes for a total of 200 yards.

However, the strongest point of the team was a sticky defense, led by Joe Haynos, Mike Abell, and P at Eacho. The squad gave up a mere 2 1/2 points per game to the opposition, and thus became a m ajor factor in the Falcon’s immensely successful season.

The J.V .’s final record was a very strong 50-1. Rolling over Gonzaga, Carroll, Maret, and St. John’s in succession, the team finished the year with a scoreless tie against McNamara.

This record evidences the stockpile of talented ballplayers who comprised the 1970 J.V. Falcons.

The 1970 Freshmen football team, coached

by Brother William Re, finished with a 5-1 record and showed great potential for future varsity teams.

In the opening game against Carroll, a 20 yard run by John Gnall and later a pass from Gnall to Dennis Dunn, won it for the frosh.

Against Georgetown Prep the defense preserved an 8-6 victory. Tom Wandres scored and John Campbell hit Dunn for the winning conversion.

In their only loss of the season, the frosh fell to Hammond, 12-6.

The frosh then beat O’Connell, with Wandres and Gnall responsible for the scoring. The defense was again outstanding, behind the leadership of John Haynos and Mike Ramsey. The final score was 22-6.

Again it was the defense in the McNamara game, shutting them out 8-0. Mike Downs intercepted, Campbell scored, and then threw to Dunn for the conversion.

In the final game, the frosh romped over Ireton 28-6. Both Campbell and Wandres threw for scores and Downs ran back an interception for another.

This year’s team was marked by balance and promises G.C. strength for the future.

Long practices and fierce determination were the predominate factor:. in the success. A fter dropping the season opener to Georgetown Prep, their efforts were rewarded as the harriers beat beth Peary and DeMatha, the la tter by the overwhelming score of 15-50. In a triangular meet, however, G.C. lost to both Springbrook and Einstein, despite the first-place scoring of Sophomore Jim Dayhoff. But again the team bounced back winning the next four meets in a row over Landon, Ryken and Mt. St. Joseph’s, Kennedy and N orth wood, and McNamara.

Then the team moved to the Invitationals.

At American University, G.C. captured second place in light of three positions in the first fifteen. In the Wakefield Invitational, Bill Greenville, Jim Dayhoff, Phil Raum, and Bill Gretz all finished high.

Third place was achieved in the Cross Country Championships for Maryland, with Dayhoff, Raum, and Greenville finishing in the upper p art of the field again.

By the end of the season, performances such as these had put Good Counsel in first place in the WMAC. This marked the first time th a t the harriers had won the league championship.

Throughout the year Gretz, Greenville, Raum, and Dayhoff were the most consistent finishers. N ext year’s team will still have Raum, Dayhoff, Ken Seamone, and Bill Ohlmacher to contribute tow ard another high standing in the W ashington area.

The long hours of hard work and practice which the G.C. wrestlers have been subjected to for four years paid off in ’71 as the Falcons compiled an over-.500 record of 5-4. This marked the first winning season in the wrestling team ’s short history.

G.C. opened its season with a victory over Sidwell Friends, but a tough loss to O’Connell evened the grapplers' record at 1-1. However, the squad bounced back by reeling off three straight victories, taking matches from McNamara, Georgetown Prop, and League rival Carroll.

The Falcons then stumbled badly, losing to powerhouses Ireton and St. Alban’s by large margins and dropping a close match to Landon. A victory over St. Stephen’s closed out the season and assured the varsity of its winning record.

The J.V.’s record paralleled that of the varsity, excepting only the St. Alban’s and St. Stephen’s contests, which the J.V. won and lost, respectively.

A number of team members practiced a t the Rockville Municipal Pool a t 5:30 A.M. twice a week and a t 9:00 on Sunday mornings in an effo rt to prove th a t Good Counsel had the makings to be one of the top teams in the area.

Success. Despite the lack of adequate practice time and the normal difficulties of any first-year team , they succeeded, winning 3rd Place in competition against 24 other local high schools in the Metropolitan Inter-Scholastic Swimming Championships.

Not knowing w hat it could do in its first competition and facing a strong opponent, the team lost to Georgetown Prep but narrowed Prep’s lead drastically, indicating much latent potential. T hat potential was realized against Richard Montgomery. I re ton didn’t take seriously the new swim team from Wheaton and lost.

Over confident against Carroll, the team had its first heartbreaking defeat. A lack of depth explained the defeat

by W alter Johnson, a perennial powerhouse. But in the last two meets against Northwood and St. John’s, Good Counsel unleashed all its power and swam away w ith stunning upsets.

Singling out individuals for praise is difficult in any sport, but Tom Cullinane’s versatility in the 50, 100, and 200 yard freestyles was a major factor in the team ’s winning record. Chip Marshall consistently won all butterfly contests. But no m atter how many All-Mets a team has, only strong performances by all swimmers will bring home a winner.

Inexperience Leads to 8 -1 8 Season The statem ent, “W ait ’til next year,” has become a common cliche, but it is still relevant to the 1970-71 varsity basketball team. Faced with the return of only one letterm an from last year’s squad, Coach Bombard was forced to build an entirely new team out of inexperienced players.

The Falcons did manage to surprise many by opening the season with three consecutive wins, reeling off victories over Landon, Peary, and Blair. However, close defeats at the hands of Einstein and Wheaton cooled off the Falcons, after which things went steadily downhill. G.C. lost convincingly to three area powers — Rockville, Northwood, and DeMatha ■ —- before snapping its losing streak with the first of two victories over McNamara.

Unsettled by this turn of events, the squad epitomized a frustrating season with the eight-game losing streak which followed. Four of these losses were to WMAC opponents, and these only added to the sense of gloom which pervaded the season.

streak, defeating Carroll and McNamara. The Carroll game proved to be the varsity’s finest performance of the year as, led by sophomore Bob McCarthy’s 23 points, G.C. never lost the lead in the 63-56 contest. Winding up their schedule against WMAC rivals, G.C.’s basketballers dropped games to DeMatha and Gonzaga, ending their conference record a t 1-7.

The Falcons then moved on to the annual St. Stephen’s tournam ent. Here they had the pleasure of defeating their host in the opening game but were eliminated by the ensuing two losses to Kingswood and Gonzaga.

The varsity closed the season with a second conquest of Peary and a last-game defeat to Northwood.

Not much else can be said about the season, except th a t with starters John Coan, Tim Marx, Greg Hicks, and Bob McCarthy returning next year, prospects of a winning season look brighter than the year ju st past. Experience and the knowledge of w hat it is like to lose should result in chances for optimism in the ’72 squad.

J a y V e e Finish Strong

Bouncing back from a poor start, the JV team finished with a respectable 12-10 record. There were many factors involved, but it was mainly the development of Doug Rykhus and John O’Connell, both 6’6”. Rykhus finished with 282 points, followed by O’Connell with 257. To complement the height, Coach Guida’s team had excellent backcourt men. Mike Bosco, Tim Stone, Ed Egan and Kirby Gallagher came up with consistent plays throughout the year.

When the second half of the season began, the team jelled as they compiled an 8-3 mark. The JV won their first four: Gonzaga, Springbrook, Einstein, and Wheaton. In one of the finest performances of the season, the JV lost a heartbreaker to St. John’s, 62-61. Rykhus and O’Connell contributed 18 points each, while Egan and Bosco combined for 23. This contest indicates g reat rivalries in the future.

The JV then won their last three, beating Gonzaga, Peary and Northwood.

Throughout the year, the Junior Varsity demonstrated a g reat am ount of potential. They, along with the many returning V arsity members, should make Good Counsel a tough team to beat.

Prom ising Frosh G o 8-5 The Freshman basketball team, coached by Mr. Doilney, shows great potential as they finished the season with an 8-5 record. The Frosh lost three games by a total of 10 points; and the other losses can be accounted for by foul trouble. The team was led by John Campbell, a flashy guard who averaged 22 points a game. Guard John Gnall and forwards Dennis Dunn and Tom Wandres were excellent shooters throughout the season. 6’2” center Chris Koehle improved greatly and he, along with Dunn, provided excellent rebounding.

In their first game, last quarter mistakes and foul trouble led to a 61-49 loss to DeMatha. Then the Frosh displayed g reat balance as they defeated McNamara 49-30.

However, the next two games were heartbreakers, as the freshmen lost to St. John’s 63-60 and St. Anselm’s 58-57.

They came back to defeat Prep 47-45 and Gonzaga 60-48.

The Frosh then beat Prep and McNamara for the second time, but were again nipped by St. John’s 58-52. The Freshman completely controlled Carroll, winning 67-58; but three starters fouled out against DeMatha and GC lost 7658. The season ended with two more victories, one over Gonzaga 59-55 and St. Anselm’s, 76-58.

The Freshman basketball team displayed a great am ount of balance and, if developed, can make a strong varsity team in the future.

Track Survives A n o th e r Y e a r The 1971 Varsity Track team was sparked by the performances of a few individuals, but it lacked the necessary depth to become a winner. In the running events, P at Urick and Kevin Lawton led the way in the 100-yard dash.

Urick was also very strong in the 220, where he placed first four times. Mike Russell did a fine job in the hurdles, where he and Mark Humphrey placed highly. In the 880, Bill Ohlmacher always placed high and received support from Bill Greenville. Ohlmacher also ran well in the 440.

Phil Raum was very dependable in the mile and was also aided by Greenville. Jim Dayhoff did an excellent job in the two mile, as he placed first in all six meets. The contention of P at Urick, Gerry Boyle, Kevin Lawton, Tim Flanery, and anchorman Mike Russell did very well as a relay team in the 440 and 880.

In the field events, Pete Murphy did an excellent job in the high jump, setting the new record with his 6’2” jum p against Wilson. Murphy received support from Dick Wandres and Mike Cherry. Pete and John Murphy were consistent in the long jump. In the shot and discus, Kevin Clancy always placed well. With everything taken into consideration, the Track Team did well in representing Good •Counsel.

V a rs ity Endures Tough Season For the 1971 V arsity Baseball team , it was a very long and fru stratin g season. Inconsistency, errors, and bad calls resulted in the V arsity’s winning only 7 of 23 games.

The season opener set the pace for the rest of the year, as the V arsity lost to Crossland 6-0. In their next contest, Good Counsel was impressive, trouncing Mackin 10-3 with Jack Lewis earning the win. The Varsity then faced W hitman and their ace pitcher, Je ff Mitchell. Mitchell threw a no-hitter, as Good Counsel lost 10-0. The Varsity then downed Sidwell Friends 8-2, P at McNulty being the winning pitcher. Then in one of the best performances of the year, Good Counsel defeated Northw estern 3-1. Jack Lewis threw a three-hitter and Bill Finch doubled in two runs.

But, through inconsistent play, Good Counsel then lost to Northwestern 13-2.

In their first WMAC game, Carroll took it 5-4. As Coach Kolar said “The game was colored by questionable calls.”

Five very close plays all w ent in Carroll’s favor. Bill Finch hit a two-run homer in a losing cause. Good Counsel dropped their next two to Mackin and McNamara. Against McNamara, Finch hit another two-run homer. The next WMAC contest was again very close. Jack Lewis faced DeM atha’s Rich Schneider in a real pitching duel. Schneider won by the thin margin of 1-0. The Varsity then w ent on to

beat Peary 3-2 with P at McNulty the winning pitcher. Another good game, Good Counsel vs St. John’s, was called off because of darkness. The game went to the eighth inning, with Jack Lewis going the full distance. Highlights of the game were Neil Turlik stealing home and John Griffin’s homer. Finally, the breaks came in WMAC competition as Good Counsel edged Gonzaga 1-0 with Lewis picking up the win. Three days later, Good Counsel faced Carroll. Lewis again was the winning pitcher as the Varsity won 4-3. The Varsity went on to defeat Prep 8-2 to win their seventh and last game of the year. Good Counsel then lost their nine last games in a row, making it, indeed, a frustrating season.

All in all, Coach Kolar had a good ball club despite a poor record. They faced tough non-league competition but fared well in most of the WMAC games. John Griffin led the team in batting with a .343 average. He was followed by Skip Dabbs who batted .312. Catcher Wally Gleason played great defense at the plate and also hit .292. Wally won the Coach’s Award for his efforts. Jack Lewis was Good Counsel’s top pitcher, showing great poise throughout the year.

Jack ended the season winning the Most Valuable Player Award. With nine letterm en returning, plus a strong JV, Good Counsel will be a tough baseball team to beat.

-5; Best Ever J a y V e e Baseball 12-5; Coach Frye’s 1971 Junior Varsity Baseball team ended a very successful season, finishing 12-5. Among the JV ’s feats were their four victories over powers DeMatha and O’Connell.

One of the greatest assets to the JV was the play of pitcher-shortstop Dave Rivers. In eight appearances, Rivers was 5-2 and struck out a phenomenal 77 batters. He was also Coach Frye’s leading hitter, batting .327. Dave was second to Jim Edw ards’ 13 RBI, with 12. Another versatile performer was M att Riley, who had a 4-1 record. He was second in batting with a .320 average. Mike Bosco had a .311 average and stole 15 bases.

One of the highlights of the season came in the opener against Northwood. Dave Rivers threw a one-hitter, struck out 11, and won 2-0. Against Prep, M att Riley threw a onehitter, struck out 11, and won 9-0. In the second game with Prep, Mark Johnson pitched a no-hitter, winning 5-0. So the Varsity certainly has a lot of talent coming up in the next few years.

Coach B rother de Porres had one of his best golf team s ever as the Varsity posted a 7-2 record. In the regular season, the team did very well, blanking Largo, Gonzaga, and H arker each 9-0. A very close (4-5) loss to St. John’s forced Good Counsel into the playoffs. The V arsity lost to Prep 4-5 on a twenty-foot p u tt on the 18th hole.

The Golf Team was led by Mike Bausch, who ended the year winning the Most Valuable Player Award. The other senior member was Pete Labukas, who was the Number Two man. Juniors Lary Larson, Jay Kuhn, and Mike Flannery all proved to be solid threats to their opponents. Sophomore Bruce Shaver and freshman Jim Bonifant were surprises in th a t they stepped right into varsity competition and Bonifant, in his first year of golf a t Good Counsel, received the Coach s Award.

Endless variety, yet areas of similarity — such may be found in any group of persons, whether small or large groups.

No two people are the same — perhaps it is this very difference which draws one person to another. Friendship often begins when people are thrown together — it always begins between strangers.

One must know a person, understand him, in order to love him. And one must allow others to know him in order to be loved.

Everyday occurrences, uneventful routines — the classrooms, the hallways, the lunch tables, the constant mingling of diverse individuals mold the bonds of friendship and strengthen the love between friends.

It is night.

I sit at the window gazing at the stars.

The night is empty, and I am alone, But there is one who knows of my solitude.

And so my loneliness is eased, because it is shared.

I sit and think of my friend.

If a flower, perhaps the loveliest in the world, Were to grow from a seedling, blossom into all its loveliness, and finally die, And if during its entire life, that flower existed Unseen, unnoticed, unknown, Did that flower ever really exist at all?

What would it be like to die And leave no one to cry?
