BROTHER MARCUS, C.F.X. Principal

The first year of his administration proved to be a very rewarding one for the students and Brother Marcus.

Good Counsel welcomed its second principal in the seventh year after its opening in 1958.

Brother comes from Mt. St. Joseph’s in Baltimore, where he was chairman of the modern language department and the language laboratory, Junior Class Guidance counselor, Vocation Director and Associate Superior.

Our student body has greatly benefited from his coordinating abilities in these areas as the school’s directive policy underwent several changes in keeping up with all the changing times and demands.

Brother also acquainted himself with all the phases of student activities, taking a personal interest in them and helping out whenever he was needed. A busy principal must take time for doing these things, and will make tim e for them if he is dedicated to the development of the individuals and places other interests above his own.

The students can usually find him talking in the lounge after school and, in his few months at Good Counsel, he knows the first name of nearly every boy in the school.

As for Brother’s view of Good Counsel, he commented sincerely, "In my short stay here, I have been deeply impressed by the spirit the student body has shown in all areas.’’ Brother Marcus has shown his own spirit for the school. At -the opening assembly in September, Brother told the students that Good Counsel now had his loyalty.

The spirit is never found lacking when the leadership is both cooperative in attaining and yet firm in demanding the highest standards of excellence. Brother Marcus’ abilities as an administrator and his friendship as a man will be remembered and cherished by the graduating seniors in their future studies and life.

BROTHER VINCENTIUS, C.F.X. Director of Studies

As Director of Studies for the past three years, Brother Vincentius has contributed greatly to and been responsible for the vitality and growth of Good Counsel in all areas. Brother's office affects nearly every facet of school life, and he has used his influence well. Many things in the school indicate this influence.

In order to better educate each student and challenge his abilities, Brother modernized and expanded the curriculum. To prepare eighth graders for high school, he initiated an extensive orientation program for incoming freshmen. The program helps them adjust to and become acquainted with high school life. With this same spirit, he established a tutorial program for students having difficulty in their studies. He has likewise spent many long hours filling out transcripts for the seniors and overseeing the projects of the National Honor Society, which he moderates.

Because of these efforts it is hardly surprising that, during Brother's three years at Good Counsel, the number of students on the honor roll has greatly increased, while the number of failures has sharply decreased. These figures form a great tribute to Brother Vincentius’ success as an educator.

But he has also been successful as a disciplinarian. This success arises from the fact that, although he is strict, he has always been just, and thus always respected.

These functions of educator and disciplinarian often overlap. A clear example of this is the class assemblies. In these assemblies, Brother speaks to the students on their successes and failures pointing out the aspects of the class which have improved, or need improvement. In this way, Brother Vincentius increases the communication between administration and student body, so necessary for the success of the school.

By all these activities, Brother has helped Good Counsel become a mature school. Truly we owe a great deal to Brother Vincentius. We dedicate this school magazine to him.

Much of the success rendered Good Counsel flows directly from the efforts of the Administrators w h ic h staff it.

Bro. Xaverius, in his third year as the school Treasurer, has handled all monetary procedures pertaining to the school, including such cumbersome tasks as selling books and supplies to students, and paying remittance to all places of business with which the school has made transactions.

As Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Brosnan types for Br. Vincentius and records all the scholastic doings of the students, including the processing and mailing of college transcripts.

Mrs. Tana oversees all reports on absenteeism, receives all official calls and messages and serves as school receptionist. Mrs. Murphy assists Br. Maron in the Library, receiving her major task of cataloging the 1600 books obtained in the highly successful March Book Drive.

SENIOR HISTORY D. Hurson

We are a young school - 7 years now, to be exact and thus it’s hard to make comparisons between a class now, and classes then. Yet, reading the ledger as it stands today, we can’t hesitate to call this year’s senior class the greatest ever. “ Greatest,” however, is a lone superlative - relative and vague. So we must look closer. We must hasten to rescue Mr. Senior 1965, who, although he readily accepts the tact he’s “ the greatest ever,” is slightly pressed for an explanation of how he got that way.

Well, just as our mascot, The Falcon, flies high and strikes hard, so has this school in seven leaping years. Energy and spirit have long been abundant around here; so, Mr. Senior ’65, you are the most energetic and most spirited yet at 11601 Georgia Ave.! You studied (maybe not as much as you should have) but at least enough to swell the National Honor Society and the honor roll and make this a top academic school.

Who, Mr. Senior 1965, ever heard of an undefeated, unscored upon team, a class booster club, or a class newspaper before YOU arrived on the scene? What understaffed club moderator could ever have imagined TOO MANY prospective applicants before YOU arrived?

And, Mr. Senior '65, even if you personally didn’t start something, you gave it all your support and made sure it was a success. Together, you went all out for athletics by providing four exciting years of intensely competitive intramurals and always making your voice heard at the "big” game.

Breaking down into smaller groups, you helped start a science club, a math club, a drama club; you swelled the ranks of the old glee club; you spawned a championship debate team; you virtually dominated the staff of a school newspaper; you agitated for, and then helped create, a yearbook.

There were, of course, leaders among you, boys who stood out and made their influence felt. But there were so many individuals who organized so many projects and activities that to recount all would be impractical. Let it simply be said that whether you were a leader or an interested follower, you cared enough to give your time and energy when it was needed. Indeed, it often seemed that activity actually increased around here after 3 o’clock.

The past four years, then, have been fruitful ones; you’ve seen this school progress from the experiments of Dick Schaplowsky’s Student Council to the Hootenanny, food and book drives and general aggressiveness of John Oristian’s S.A.C. But there is one more memory to recall - that a large part of your success must surely be owed to a truly concerned faculty, and to one great man who always treated you like a senior - Brother Mark.

So look back on it all, and don’t be afraid to give yourself and your classmates a well deserved pat on the back. But moreover, use this early success as a basis for greater achievements in the years to come. The real challenges of life loom ahead, but you, Mr. Senior ’65, have proved you can meet them.

INTRAMURALS

The football and basketball intramural leagues, which have more participants than any other school activity, completed another successful season. The SAC Athletic Committee, under the direction of Kevin Foley, supervises and operates the leagues on every Friday afternoon and Saturday mornings. Br. Borromeo and Br. Giles help moderate the leagues.

Although weather conditions hindered the football leagues, class 4-112 managed to win the Senior Division and 3-105 captured the Junior title. Classes 2-104 and 1-101 grabbed the Sophomore and Freshman crowns. G. Rivers, R. Anastasi, D. Nichols, J. Dean, and D. Kelly were some of the many outstanding players.

Class 4-212 edged 4-112 in the Senior basketball league and went on to defeat 3-210, 13-10, in the finals. Class 3-210 squeezed by 3-105, 21-18, in a playoff to take the Junior Championship, and 2-104 took the Sophomore

crown. Although 1-102 snatched the freshman title from 1-101 in a playoff, they succumbed to 2-104 in the finals.

Some of the especially outstanding players in the Senior Division were J. Feakes, S. Amey, F. Rice, W. Brown, D. Kelly and C. Miller.

The Junior Division also had its share of talent in Bob Sharpe, C. Czarniak, M. Giovanni, P. Costello, J. Shovlin and J. Houston. The Freshman and Sophomore divisions had too many outstanding players to name.

The many referees and scorers who gave up their Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings to make the program possible deserve special thanks. Br. Darius, Br. Didymus, Mr. Manuel, and Mr. Guida helped referee on Fridays. Norm Saunders and Mike Rosnick made out the score cards and kept score. G. Krainak, C. Czarniak, P. Costello, R. Brouilette, G. FALCONS READY TO STRIKE AGAINST GONZAGA

For the first season in the past 3 years, the Varsity attained a winning record, with six wins against four losses. The offense rolled up a total of 117 points, the defense allowed only 82, and both squads consistently sparked the other into a united team effort.

At the halfway point, the Falcons had blitzed to an unprecedented 4-1 record. The "Chinese Gladiators,” led by defensive Captain John Oristian, were holding the opposing teams to an average of 3.8 points a game.

The offense, sustained by a bruising ground attack, was scoring higher in every game.

After the opening loss to High Point, the Varsity chalked up four successive victories on Falcon Field. The first victim was Duval, defending champs of the Prince Georges County League. Quarterback Kenny Gallagher led the attack, scoring two touchdowns on roll-outs, while the Tigers were held scoreless. On the opening kickoff against Wilson, Tommy Dickerson raced 88 yeards to touch off a 19-0 rout. Fullback Pat Tyser also scored on a power play, and linebacker Pete Baum ran back an intercepted pass for the final score. Phelps followed.

Tyser scored twice on short runs, and Mike McGee sprinted 86 yards on a punt return. Baum added a safety. The high point of the first half of the season came at the Gonzaga game. The largest crowd ever to witness a game on GC’s field, 1300, also saw one of the wildest scoring exhibitions in our team’s history. At the half, the Falcons led 2-0, the benefactors of a Dennis Boyland safety. After the intermission, Baum added another safety, halfback Williams ran for 2 touchdowns and Bobby Rafferty collaborated with Tom Boyle for an electrifying touchdown pass.

In the second half of the season, the Falcon's faced four ranked teams. In the Carroll game, the Lions ground out a 19-0 win, despite some spectacular plays tried by the CC gridders. In the very close Georgetown Prep game, the Hoyas held on to win a well-played contest. At Landon, Pat Tyser scored on a short run, but the Bears won the highly disputed victory. The Falcons finally broke loose again against Episcopal, as Dan Cassidy and A1 Checchi scored on runs, and Gallagher reached pay-dirt twice on roll-outs. The defensive line added a fourth quarter safety.

This left the team with a 5-4 record with only O’Connell remaining. Checci scored a minute before halftime, and Tyser, the leading scorer, broke a 6-6 deadlock with a 5 yard burst in the last two minutes of the season. The 12-6 victory ended a season of consistently good team play.

The Falcons, in setting a new home attendance record, did not lose a home game. Pat Tyser received the Most Valuable Player trophy at Awards Night.

Many coaches say that football games are won up front, on the line. The 1964 edition of the Falcons proved this when they succeeded in winning six of ten contests on what was described as "the toughest schedule in the area.”

On offense, though outweighed at times by as much as thirty pounds a man, the line, led by John Oristian, Fred Shaw, Mike Gretchel, and Kenny Bombard, opened gaping holes for Falcon backs. On defense the line and linebackers anchored by Ed Guttierez and Pete Baum continually stopped their opponents cold, holding them to an average of but one touchdown a game.

MR. FRED MANUEL chats with Tommy Dickerson in a breather from spring training activities.

One of the foremost reasons for the prestige which Good Counsel enjoys today, both scholastically and athletically, is Mr. Fred Manuel. At 24, Mr. Manuel is now completing his third year of teaching and coaching at Good Counsel. He has become well-known for the interest he generates in his History and P.O.D. classes, making them more than just another credit or course. As a coach he has raised Good Counsel’s football from 1-7 to this year’s highly commendable 6-4 record. In three years, also, he has consistently coached the J.V. basketball team to winning seasons.

Mr. Manuel comes from West Orange, N. J., and went to high school there. After attending Potomac State Jr. College, where he played basketball and football, he graduated from George Washington University, lettering in football.

This year’s Junior Varsity gridders combined a potent offense and a staunch defense in compiling a season record of 7 wins, 2 losses. The offense, led by Buddy Tucker and running backs Tom Blanchard and Bob McMahon, averaged 20 points a game, while the defense, anchored by linebackers Mike Gleason and Mike Giovanni, and safety Phil Hanlon, held opponents to a season total of 59 points. The highlights of the season were victories over St. John’s 21-0, O’Connell 31-6 and Wilson 27-7, while the two losses came at the hands of rugged Carroll and Gonzaga squads. Coaches DeSimone and Hornfeck expect Tucker, McMahon, Gleason, and Blanchard to fill out the varsity next year.

The Freshman Football team, coached by Brother Ivo and Mr. Didden, finished the season with a 1-2-1 record. The Littlest Falcons, combining a solid ground attack with rugged defensive play, opened their season by stomping Glenelg J.V. 14-0. The frosh then fell to strong teams from Carroll and St. Anthony’s. The season’s finale against O'Connell, considered by all to be the Freshmen’s finest effort, ended in a 0-0 tie. Both coaches declined to name any outstanding players, commenting: “ This was a well-rounded team-and they all worked together as a unit.”

The 1964-1965 Varsity Falcon basketball team offset a lack of height with speed and determination, and hustled to an impressive record of 17 wins, 15 losses. Throughout the year the Falcons’ fast-breaking offense and pressuring defense cut the opposing squads down to size. In their most outstanding victories the Varsity roundballers defeated fine teams from Sherwood, Poolesville and Montgomery Blair. Also included in their seventeen triumphs was a sound thrashing of the Montgomery County champs, Richard Montgomery.

Captain Jimmy Dean and senior guard Paul Spelman led the team in scoring, while seniors Bill Brugger and Kevin Richards combined their talents in picking the boards clean. Added help was received in both scoring and rebounding by senior Bob Tarentino andpromising junior Tom Heeney. The reserves, Ken Gallagher, Tommy Dickerson, Cliff Brown, John Brugger and Harvey Simms, gave Coach Jay Manning a strong bench which he could turn to in time of need.

The Junior Varsity basketball team, coached by Mr. Fred Manuel, combined a high scoring offense, a stingy defense and exceptional rebounding strength in sailing to a 26 and 4 slate. Their record represents the finest achievement by any basketball team in the school’s history. Inspirational to the team was Co-Captain George Hackey who amassed the amazing total of 400 rebounds and steals for the season. High point man, Mickey O’Malley, combined with Hackey, Co-Captain Tim Sullivan, Buddy Tucker, Rocky Anastasi to make up the starting unit on a team which averaged 60 points a game. The reserves, Gary Rivers, A1 Checchi, Ed Jones, Larry Darmody, Pat Rhodes, and Carl Butkus, all had a hand in compiling the total of 26 victories.

This year’s Freshman basketball team, sparked by the top scorers and rebounders, Mike Cassidy and Mike O’Connor, sped to a 9 wins, 6 losses record. In their finest efforts, the Frosh twice defeated strong contingents from Carroll, McNamara and Peary. Cassidy and O’Connor, together with Don Vicars, Buddy Houston, John Vignau and Bob Kemp, combined to give the littlest Falcons a fine nucleus this season and showed promise of brightening the roundball picture for the coming years.

Perhaps the most successful performance of the past Good Counsel athletic year involved the 1964 Cross Country team. These boys posted a mark which may long remain the pinnacle of achievements for Falcon Harriers. Under the reigns of Mr. Manning, the squad rolled up a 9-1 record against the best in area opposition. They gained outside recognition of their abilities and achievements when the Washington Post ranked them 2nd in the Metropolitan Area. The team can also boast of a two-time selectee to the All-Metropolitar team, Ernie O’Boyle.

In a sport which stresses individual effort as well as team performance, Good Counsel was blessed many times over. •In every victory which the Falcons registered, O’Boyle came in first. In the Wakefield Invitational, against the finest runners in the area, he finished second. But Ernie was only one of a team of truly fine athletes. Donald Cook, Gary Heim, and Tom Manco often finished in the first seven, seldom out of the first 10. Good Counsel is proud of all the members of the team, which helped bring it a little more excitement and glory.

The 1965 Good Counsel Track team, headed by a strong contingent from the outstanding Falcon Cross Country team and a host of experienced seniors, should develop into the finest team ever.

Two-milers Gary Heim and Tom Manco, milers Ernie O’Boyle and Don Cook, and halfmilers Fred Rice and Dennis Dolan will combine to make the distance events the team’s strong point. In the sprints, two speedsters, senior Mike McGee and junior Dan Cassidy will carry most of the load. Both will be heavily counted on in the 440 and 100 yard dashes. Junior Tom Dickerson, the GC record holder, and senior Frank Brosnan will handle the hurdles.

A small army of shot putters, led by senior Paul Skelly and sophomore Willie Mathis, and two fine senior pole vaulters, Jim Murphy and Tom Vaughn, who both cleared 10’6” last season, should earn needed points in the field events.

This year’s team has a fine nucleus, and if coaches DeSimone, Guida, Didden, and Manning can fill out the squad with some of the very promising underclassmen, the team could develop into a contender for area honors.

BASEBALL After a disappointing season last year, Coach Hornfeck and his team eagerly await the start of the 1965 season. Pitching will be the strong point of the club this year. The ace of the pitching staff, senior righthander Tom Boyle, has compiled a 12-5 slate in three years of varsity competition. He will be well complemented by juniors Rocky Anastasi and Paul Lucas. Bob Rafferty and Tom Heeney will divide the catching chores. The right side of the infield is set; Cliff Brown will be at first and Pat Tyser at second. On the left side, Billy Williams, John Noyes and Cliff Czarniak are all vying for the shortstop and third base positions. In the outfield Johnny Dougherty is the only returning letterman. George Hackey is expected to fill one of the vacant slots, with the other position going to one of a host of good-looking underclass prospects.

Although the team plays a most ambitious schedule, the combination of the experience of the seniors together with the maturing of the underclassmen should be enough for the Falcons to once again return to their winning ways on the baseball diamond.

Mr. Chuck Hornfeck, who is in his third year of coaching the team, looks ahead to another winseason.

Pat Tyser, Cliff Brown and Tom Boyle, all of whom are expected to carry big bats for the Falcons this season.

The bowling leagues, providing one of the most popular school activities, have completed a very successful season. Br. Brian moderates the leagues which bowl every Monday afternoon. The Ten pin league consists of eleven teams and forty-three members, while the Duck pin league has twelve teams and fifty-two members. Phil Cook and Joe Feakes preside over the leagues.

In the Ten pin league, the Big Bad Bandits, after robbing the lead from the Jokers, hold first place, hotly pursued by the Jokers and the Rapscallions. The Rapscallions have the high team series of 2455, while the Big Bad Bandits also have high team game of 769 to

their credit. In the race for individual honors, John Doyle captured the high set and high game awards with a 648 and 233 respectively.

However, Phil Cook tops the league with a 173 average.

In Duck pin bowling, the Rabbi 5 (37-5) hold a commanding lead over the Infinite 5 (31-14) and the Rustlers (29-6). The Rat Finks rolled high team game, 600. Individual honors belong to John Heilman who maintains a 115 average, Willy Nalls, who rolled a 405set, and Mark Hall who has a 157 high game. Br. Sylvester leads in strikes with 35 and Heilman leads the league in spares with 121.

The hallmark of a successful student body is an active government. This year, the Student Activities council can boast of an unprecedented year of innovation and activity.

Elected last year, the officers included John Oristian, President; Jim Dean, 1st Vice President; A1 Checchi, 2nd Vice President; Pat Rafferty, Treasurer; Fred McChesney, Secretary; Joe Tumulty, Historian; Kevin Foley, Athletic Chairman; Bob Lawton, Religious Chairman; Dan Hurson, Cultural Chairman; Chuck Foltyn, Social Chairman. Brother Giles assumed the job of S.A.C. moderator. The assembly consists of the presidents of 24 homerooms.

This year, S.A.C. began more activities than in any other year since its beginning.

One of the most publicized activities was S.A.C.’s first Hootenanny. This affair, which was begun by a prospectus submitted by A1

high schools, newspapers, radio stations and colleges. Mark Hall and his technical committee handled the effective light and sound arrangements.

S.A.C. took a long step toward wider recognition by joining the National Association of Student Councils, which is a closely knit group composed of the most important area High Schools.

As a result of S.A.C. initiative, a student exchange with Montgomery Blair was organized. A dozen O.L.G.C. students went to Blair the week before Easter; a comparable number of Blair students came to Good Counsel the week after Easter.

S.A.C. also instituted a number of activities within the student body. Among them: the nucleus for a band; a student pep song, which was a long time campaign promise of past officers; an improved film-festival; a supply of pins and pennants which were sold for football and basketball games; a school banner; the oft-promised, but never published, Treasurer’s reports came offt this year for the first time; an efficient Poster Club for the

plans. Not a single faculty member was present.

This year’s activities widened S.A.C.’s horizons considerably. And next year's S.A.C. will inherit a tradition of action.

FALCON

Ulcer-time came as the March 16 deadline drew nearer. Frantic editors and assistants hunched over typewriters like so many animated solder-sculptures. But in the end work payed off and VOILA!, the second edition of the FALCON. The new FALCON, replete with a Dooleydesigned cover, contains ninety-six pages, which makes more work for the staff. Early in the year, after Treasurer Tom Ramisch collected initial deposits, Editor-in-Chief Pat Rafferty, assisted by Bob Sharpe, divided work into two main parts: class pictures, with editor Don Haggarty and assistants Tim Murray, Larry Schnaubelt, Joe Tumulty and Bob Sanford; and activities with general editor Bob Boyle. Bob further divided the activities section into athletic activities, under Pat Flanagan and George Krainak, and non-athletic activities, under David Wood and Bob Rafferty.

Since the early deadline forces the main work to focus on Fall and Winter activities, the Underclass assistants produced the first FALCON supplement of Spring events, including the Proms, Awards Day, Election Highlights, and Graduation.

The Falcon joins its sister publication the COUNSELOR (and a rash of underclass fledglings) in a successful year.

Under the tutelage of one of its former moderators, the COUNSELOR continued in its eighth year of publication. Several changes marked this year’s publication. First, Brother Alberto, last year’s faculty advisor, left the school. In the scramble for power which undoubtedly ensued, former strongman Brother Alexander emerged as the new man in power.

The second event concerned the addition of SCHOLASTIC ROTO to the regular editions of the newspaper. ROTO, published by a national organization, offers students an insight into other schools and their activities.

The entire editorial staff remained with Dan Hurson as Editor-in-Chief. A major innovation in the organization this year was the addition of underclass assistant editors. Although they received no credit for the work done, the major portion of the second semester

editions resulted from their efforts. Ken Roussil, Mike Rossick, Dennis Roderick, and Charles Maier, working with their respective mentors: Guy Clifton, Ken Holecko, Bob Boyle, and Tom Murphy, learned the principles of newspaper organization along with the sweat work and worry that goes into every issue.

Several weeks before actual production, the page editors begin setting up the page— article topics and wordage, page position, picture sizes, positions and numbers, and headline sizes. The editors then assign the articles.

The second step takes place about two weeks later after the reporters have turned in their articles. At that time they are proofread, rewritten, typed, and proofread again. Then, the editors check headline count, article wordage, etc., to insure all is as it should be. After the printer types the articles on what are called "galleys” , the last step begins. These articles have been typed on long sheets exactly the width of the columns. The page editors paste them into position on a layout sheet which goes to the printer. Finally after five or more weeks of labor, the paper comes out.

Change and expansion and some improvements have marked this year and have made it one of the most successful yet for the COUNSELOR.

This year marks one of Good Counsel’s most successful years in the field of speech and debate. Led by a new moderator, Brother Meric, former President of the National Catholic Forensic League, Good Counsel has captured undisputed first place in the varsity and junior varsity levels, has qualified speakers for the finals in all categories, has participated in four national tournaments and has set up its own invitational tournament.

On the varsity level, the A division team of Dave Ross and Dan Hurson, Ken Holecko and Bob Lawton hold first place with a near perfect record of 26 wins and 2 losses, four debates ahead of the next place team . In the two-man team levels, Dave Ross and Dan Hurson stand in first place with a 14 wins and no losses record, and Bob Lawton and Ken Holecko hold first place in another division with a 12 wins and 2 losses record. Both of these twoman teams have excellent chances of attending National Tournament in New York in May.

In the junior varsity levels, the sophomore four-man team of Jack Gallagher, Jim Kleiler, Chris Fox, and Tom Doherty hold first place with a record of twenty-one wins and five losses. The two-man teams of Jack Gallagher and Jim Kleiler, and Chris Fox and Tom Doherty hold first and second places respecviely.

Good Counsel speakers have also qualified themselves for all divisions of speech competition.

All Good Counsel successes have not been in the Washington league, however. The Macaws have also participated in four national tournaments. At Pennsylvania University, in Philadelphia, Good Counsel placed fifth. At

St. John’s in Queens, New York, speakers Dave Ross and Dan Hurson received a third place team trophy in extemporaneous speaking, and Hurson received a third place individual trophy, the first out-of-state speakers to win a trophy at St. John’s. At St. Jospeh’s in Philadelphia, Good Counsel came within one point of placing in the finals and at Georgetown, Ken Holecko was honored as the eleventh speaker out of more than two hundred.

The biggest innovation of this year was the Good Counsel invitational Tournament, to which schools from all over the East Coast were invited. Good Counsel took third place

in this contest, with Loyola (Towson) first and Boston College High School second.

All in all, the. year has been full of hectic activity and great success for the Good Counsel Debate Club.

RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES Religious Activities are often the distinctive characteristics of a Catholic school, and Good Counsel has a variety of such activities.

Under the direction of Brother Gregg, the moderator of religious activities, the school formed a Lay Apostolate organization. This group mdertook work in many areas. Approximately thirty boys were involved in recreational work at Saint Joseph's Home in D.C. In groups of five these members went down to Saint Joseph’s on alternate Fridays and met, played and worked with the children there. Another group participated in a similar recreational apostolate at Sts. Paul and Augustine Parish. They managed teams, acted as referees, and, in general, helped in whatever way possible. The Inter-City Project, based at Sts. Paul and Augustine Parish, provided still another area

of work. A group of Good Counsel students went down to the center every Wednesday to tutor the children. They helped them to do their homework, to work with arts and crafts, and, in particular, to prepare for the high school entrance examination.

In addition to the Lay Apostolate, the school provided many other leligious activities. To aid the needy families at Christmas time, the seniors sponsored a Christmas Basket Drive. The drive exceeded its goal by over $300 and was the most successful ever held at Good Counsel. The Bolivian Missions drive, held during Lent, met with similar success.

Realizing the importance of the Liturgy in the life of the Church and the Christian individual, the school incorporated the changes in the liturgy in the First Friday Mass. These included the simplifying and turning of the altar so that the priest faces the people, and the singing of hymns. New features also included an Offertory procession at the Masses.

Besides these specific activities, the school also provides a chapel for the stu-dents. Every morning a group of students in the Senior Sodality led a voluntary recitation of the Rosary. The chapel also provided a student spiritual refuge, especially at exam time.

The school Sodality, consisting of Sodalities from all four years, contributed in a special way. The Senior Sodality followed a threefold program: Bible Services, recitation of the Rosary and general discussions. They also sent three members, Glen Passin, Robert Boyle, and Stephen McEvitt to the Sodality Convention in Baltimore. The topics discussed were, in turn, discussed at meetings of the Senior Sodality. The officers are: Robert Lawton, Prefect; Robert Boyle, Vice-Prefect; Paul Gaither, Secretary; Glen Passin, Treasurer.

The Junior Sodality concentrated on closer union with Our Lady through apostolic work. Some sodalists tutored while others organized games for the children of Saints Paul and Augustine parish in Washington. Under the direction of Brother Gregg the juniors completed a booklet describing various religions.

The Sophomore Sodality, composed of thirty-five members, met twice a week and discussed the problems which teenagers face in every day life. Their talks ranged from •'going steady” to "financial problems."

Brother Didymus, club moderator, guided the talks. He stressed the importance of mental prayer, and this served as the topic of a great, many discussions. During these, the Sodalists learned how and when to pray mentally. The Sophomore Sodalists worked on the Bolivian Missions drive as a part of their apostolic project. They assisted in encouraging the students to donate to the cause. The Sophomore

Sodalists joined with the upperclassmen in the Nights of Recollection held during the year.

The Freshman Sodality started late in the year but progressed quickly under the leadership of Brother Borromeo, its moderator. The Freshman Sodalists must primarily learn the aims and goals of the Sodality life. Meeting once a week, the Freshman Sodality prepares the Sodalist for apostolic activities which will be undertaken later as an upperclassman. All served as preparation for the final activity of the novice Sodalist which was the Consecration ceremony held at the end of the school year.

DRAMA CLUB After hurdling the initial stages of planing and organization, the Drama Club this year has realized its potential as a fine acting group. Aided by an abundance of school talent, and a general willingness to work, the dramatists have had a successful and rewarding year.

Students from all quarters generously answered the call for new members. From there the club divided into three groups, each with its own moderator—Mr. Allison with the Seniors, Mr. Nesvig with the Juniors, and Brother Alexander with the Freshmen-Sophomores.

Plans materialized for three one-act plays (one by each group) which appeared in early December. The plays ranged from the stark realism of the schizophrenics in "The Laity," the existential "Zoo Story,” to the hilarious "High Sign.”

as performers and dancers. The show consisted of twelve novelty acts and skits composed jointly by the moderators. Between acts, noted club members gave forth with humor and nonsense.

All in all, the Drama Club has had a very successful year, growing into a well organized activity which gives its members the opportunity to obtain valuable and memorable experience in the acting field.

Scientific-minded students at Good Counsel can choose among three clubs as outlets for their interests. This year the Science, Math and Electronics clubs have been directing all their efforts toward the Science Fair which they sponsor in March. As a condition for membership in these clubs all members must submit one project for display at the fair.

From all the projects submitted, the best ones are sent to the Montgomery County Science Fair in Rockville. In the past, the clubs have had fair success at Rockville. Last year, for instance, Peter Kogge won first place in the Physics Division, and James Hook received an Honorable Mention.

In addition to the Science Fair members may participate in many other auxiliary activities. Several films on topics related to the different clubs and field trips to various local companies and agencies headed the list of the clubs’ activities.

Chemistry, Brother Eudes; and Physics, Brother Rogatus. Early in the year, the club elected John Fournelle president, Ed Ihrig vice-president, John Adler secretary, and Steve Kogge treasurer. In addition to work on individual projects, each section studies a project in order to learn scientific procedures. The club believes that it not only gives members a chance to have fun but also owes its members a chance to learn.

The Electronics Club, whose moderator is Brother Laurian, occupies that little room at the end of the science wing which only a few individuals ever see in detail. Like the science club, the electronics club initiated a

training program for its members. The program had one slight innovation in that tests were administered to the participating members.

Based on their level of understanding, the members are divided into the Intermediate and Advanced divisions of the club. Ed Ihrig was president, Larry Troan and Steve Kogge

who compete for individual and team awards.

Besides this, members explore some of the more advanced uses of math from both a theoretical and practical point of view. Membership entitles a student to compete for cash prizes in the AMA Math Contest. Officers were Ed Ihrig, John Aderhold, and Ric Ellinghaus.

This year’s Photography Club followed a triple-pronged program aimed at stimulating interest in amateur photography and developing the talents of club members.

In December, the club sponsored its first Annual Photography Contest. Members entered their own favorite pictures which the student body then voted on.

The winning photographers in each division were awarded cash prizes to "encourage the production of original photos." Members apparently had no difficulty in taking original pictures. Subjects ranged from a montage of ale and beer cans to a COUNSELOR editor minus his pants.

The club also operates a training program as an integral part of its activities.

New members learn fundamental aspects of composition, camera principles and developing from more advanced members of the club. Besides this, the club often

shows training movies illustrating the more advanced ancf refined techniques of photography. Guest speakers also dot the club’s training schedule.

The fundamentals learned in these sessions receive practical application in supplying both the FALCON and the COUNSELOR with shots of school activities.

Photographers attend all major events and cover the minor events as well. Good Counsel’s Photo Club is especially fortunate to have a well-equipped darkroom and lab.

Club officers John Reed, Steve Kogge and Charlie Daneri all feel that this three phased program not only adds to the members’ photographic knowledge, but contributes to general interest in photography. They also deny (to that COUNSELOR editor) that the club has any connection whatsoever with Allen Funt. Mr. Kelly moderates the club.

UNDERCLASS NEWSPAPERS To give their classes' more specialized news, several Juniors and Sophomores organized and published THE QUESTION MARK and THE TIERCEL. Both papers appeared bimonthly. THE QUESTION MARK edited by Fred McChesney and the Sophomore-Freshman TIERCEL edited by Tom Doherty.

The papers editorially discuss only the problems which interest the respective classes.

Praise or criticsm is leveled specifically to the actions of the lower classes, but both emphasize the roles of the groups in the school as units.

Special features include humor, reports on intramurals, and write-ups on an individual classman or school team.

Both papers plan to continue publication as long as they have the support of the groups which they serve.

c Good Counsel’s Chess Club, recently admitted to the Montgomery County Chess League, has gained ground considerably since its start last year.

Under President Pat Lynam and with Brother Maron moderating, the club looks forward to matches with Sherwood, Walter Johnson, Wilson, St. John’s and Sidwell Friends. The team includes Bill Whelan, John Ohlmacher, Pat Lynam, and Peter Johnson, Vice-President Bob Sharpe, and Secretary David Pollock. Thus far they have lost to Blair and Northwood, but have thumped Einstein 4-1 in five board matches.

The club looks forward to a good team for next year with three promising juniors ready for League competition.

Outstanding scholastic achievement, service to the school, and leadership have merited the acceptance of 153 boys into the Xaverian Chapter of the National Honor Society.

To qualify for admission, a student must have maintained a general average of eightyfive with no subject average below eighty.

Along with scholastic excellence one must also have indicated some leadership and service to the school.

The Honor Society sponsored three main events over this past year. In January it organized the Open House for prospective Good Counsel freshmen. At the Open House, Society members^ served primarily as ushers, taking the eighth graders and their parents on a guided tour of the school proper and the Brothers’ quarters. Towards the end of the year, the Society conducted a Freshman Orientation for next year’s ninth graders. At the Orientation the future freshmen were broken down into classes and the members of the National Honor Society explained the curriculum and the extracurricular activities at Good Counsel. As a continuing project, over 40 members tutored after school. These three main events relate

how the Honor Society serves the school.

Honor Society members have displayed leadership in many fields. Besides organizing Society activities, members are leaders in the student government, athletics and every other school activity.

SPECIAL RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES

Besides First Friday Mass, Good Counsel sponsors special activities throughout the year.

At Christmas, the Seniors sponsored a Basket Drive for needy families in the area. This year’s drive, the most successful ever, exceeded its goal by $342. In addition to the baskets of food, more than $900 was collected. Any surplus went to the Bolivian Missions.

During Lent, the students again supported a drive for the Bolivian Missions, and the Bishops’ Relief Fund. On March 7, the SYLVANIANS donated their talent to play the music of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Stan Kenton for this year’s Jazz Concert. This event alone raised more than $100 for the Missions.

The Senior Class spent three days on a closed retreat in late November at the Malvern Retreat House in Pennsylvania and Loyola Retreat House in Faulkner, Maryland.

The Social Committee of SAC provided the student body with a variety of events this year.

Dances included the Homecoming, MidTerm, Thanksgiving, and Underclassman Christmas dances. The decorations committee featured a theme for each dance, wellexpressed in the decorations.

At Homecoming the Senior homerooms each nominated a candidate for queen. The

Juniors and Seniors then voted and chose Lyn Mischler, queen, and Nancy Malcomson, Judy Koepenick, Nancy Dudley, Maria Amatucci, and Sue Otto, princesses.

However, the highlights of the year were the Junior and Senior Proms and the Christmas Semi-Formal.

The PREMIERS provided the music for the Semi-Formal, held on December 27.

The NEWPORTS played at the Mid-Term Dance (above) and at Homecoming.

The Junior Prom took place at Manor Country Club on April 23.

Representatives from each homeroom made up the various planning committees.

Washingtonian Country C l u b hosted the Senior Prom on May 7.

The evening featured dancing until midnight followed by a buffet.

On March 19 SAC sponsored a Hootenanny featuring the Y’drian Singers and several other popular groups to raise money tor itself and the school.

This year Good Counsel advanced higher into scholastic ranks with its appointment to the College Board. Brothers Vincentius and Alexander represented the school at the Board meetings.

Three students S. Soule, D, Ross, and D. Wood placed as Merit Finalists. Letters of Commendation went to more than twenty seniors.

G.C.’s ‘‘It's Academic” team won two matches out of three. In the first bout against Wilson and Cardoza, they finished with a 200 point lead. On their second appearance, they faced and defeated teams from Maret and DuV al. However, in a playoff they fell to Blair by 15 points.

At the Awards Day near the end of the year, outstanding seniors and underclassmen received awards for excellence in studies and extracurricular activities.

Brother Maron, librarian, and Pete Frauson look over some of the 2266 books that the students donated to the school through the SAC Book Drive. Brother said that most of the books would be on the shelves by Septem ber. Juniors 3-210 led the school with 470%.

SPECIAL ATHLETIC EVENTS

This year saw Good Counsel’s athletic teams rise and with them the spirit of the student body. Pep rallies, bonfires, Booster Club, football buttons, basketball "stop signs," car cavalcades expressed this spirit.

A WOND'ROUS ACCOUNT OF THE VISIT TO THE STRANGE “ EARTH,” AND THE QUAINT CIVILIZATION CONTAINED THEREON

Dear QUSHSHHH, I quiver to tell you, O great one, about the amazing habits and customs of the little beings. Because we don’t know their language, we can only interpret their actions'by objective behavior.

As you know, we were sent to this planet to investigate the possibility of rational life. Our ship, running out of fuel, was aimed for a long building which was teeming with life. Missing the building, we landed on a field, crushing, in the process, a dozen or so little, half-nakea creatures clothed in rags of blue and gold. 1 ne others, after screaming and jumping up and down, scurried away into the buildings.

After waiting for an hour, to make sure we would be safe, we left our ship and entered the building. Inside, we saw scores of similar frantic creatures in a long, dark hall, offering sacrifices to their shrines. Each creature has a shrine, a tall, metal aperture embedded in the wall. He places his offerings (of books or clothes) therein, and closes it. When the gods are sated, they reply by ringing a loud and harsh bell, and the creatures quickly withdraw, carrying part of the offerings with them.

Suddenly a small creature appeared from the shadows, dressed in a black garb that added to his sinister manner. He moved stealthily among the shrines, and, upon finding one that was left unlocked, actually stole the sacred offerings from within! Whatever divinities these beings worship we are sure that they will deal harshly with this unsettled being in the afterlife. Looking through one of the doors, we saw an equally sinister, black-garbed being sitting in a high-chair, similar to those in which our young are fed. Rows of creatures who had offered their sacrifices sat in wooden contraptions listening with polite boredom to the ranting of the head creature. They were passive beings, they could have easily over-powered the Black Robe and dispensed with his foul abuse.

In another room a head creature seemed to be teaching, for after hearing him mutter something, the lower creatures carved it into their seats. Thus we have been able to ascertain that one of their Mathematical operations is “ Louie" and that there was a great historian known as “ Shirley.” When a certain level of intelligence has been reached, the student is sent from the room or carves a large hole in his deski When this is seen he receives a ticket which enables him to enter the Meditation Chamber. Here, inspired by the presence of a morose Black-Robed being, he spends an hour in contemplation of wisdom and then leaves, visibly refreshed in spirit.

In another room, grotesque sounds emanated from a box on a wall, and the seated beings tried to repeat them, causing much annoyance and frustration to the head creature.

The inferior beings are entertained in the play-rooms where they mix evil-smelling chemicals, bounce springs and drop weights on tables, and even are so depraved as to cut up little dead animals!

At noon they conduct their primitive ingestive process. At first they mill about noisily, then sullenly sit down and force large amounts of filth into their faces, dump what remains into large pails where it is stored for later consumption, then stand around chattering. Presently a large creature appears, acting as a Black-Robe though dressed as the other creatures (possibly to show an inferior stage of development). He yells something in a frightening manner, gesturing towards the door. They must all go out, grumbling and setting fire to stinking white objects, putting them into their faces as a sort of punishment for refusing to eat all the slop.

Fascinated but repulsed by their whole sub-civilization, we decided to return, first capturing one of the more offensive of the Black-Robes and infecting the remaining portion with some of our planet’s bacteria to study the effects. We await any advice that the Council may deign to give us.
