Director’s Notes

Amber Sher ‘23 (Costume Drop-In Crew) is a senior at Good Counsel. This is her first play!

Elizabeth Stone ‘26 (Props) is a freshman at Good Counsel. She has previously been in Aladdin as “Jafar” and Mary Poppins in the ensemble. Lizzie plays softball, ice hockey, and swims. She would like to say thank you to her parents for helping her with theatre.

Since its inception in 1943, the board game Clue (also known as “Cluedo” outside of the U.S.) has captured the imagination and intellect of many, encouraging family fun and whodunnit hoopla for almost 80 years. In 1985, the cult classic film, starring (among others) Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, and Christopher Lloyd took the murder mystery game to silly new heights, managing to make an already colorful cast of characters into vibrantly farcical lampoons of power players in 1950s Washington at the peak of the Red Scare.

James Williams ‘23 (Colonel Mustard) is a Senior at Good Counsel. He has previously been in Ragtime as “Coalhouse Walker Jr”, A Midsummer Night’s Dream as “Oberon” and Twelve Angry Jurors as “Juror #9” at Good Counsel. James lived in Hawaii from 1st thru 4th grade. While there, he also visited Japan and went to Disneyland in Tokyo. James always wanted to be an actor since age six. James would like to thank his parents, coaches, extended family and friends for the support they have provided. Special shout out to his first grade teacher, Ms. Mikasa of Hawaii who always believed in him.

Suddenly, the two dimensional, hue named portraits on the game’ s character cards sprang to life with a wicked new sense of humor and greater life and death stakes. After the film was adapted for the stage in 2013, it quickly became a top performance choice for amateur productions. This year in the United States, Clue: On Stage is the most produced play by high school students, and we are thrilled that Good Counsel is among those performing it.

As we’ve been working on putting Clue together, the show, with its improbable situations, overexaggerated characters, and physical bits of comedic horseplay, has often been a fun respite for me from some of the more tragic news stories and stressful events around the world. We laugh a lot at rehearsals and have relished the opportunity to experiment with form, genre, and theatricality in our presentation of the show. However, I find it interesting that a play filled with a bunch of foolishness manages to somehow be funny in the face of some really unfunny topics: murder, blackmail, McCarthyism, and more.

But perhaps that’s the lesson that Clue wants us to learn. By taking a step back and addressing serious topics humorously, we arm ourselves with a weapon even more valuable than anything found in Boddy Manor. In a world gone mad, where up is down and down is up, and the rules are always changing, sometimes, all we can do is dig deeper into the ridiculousness of it all and come out on the other side with a better sense of who we really are and who we really want to be.

Please enjoy.

Director’s Notes

STUDENT BIOS

Since its inception in 1943, the board game Clue (also known as “Cluedo” outside of the U.S.) has captured the imagination and intellect of many, encouraging family fun and whodunnit hoopla for almost 80 years. In 1985, the cult classic film, starring (among others) Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, and Christopher Lloyd took the murder mystery game to silly new heights, managing to make an already colorful cast of characters into vibrantly farcical lampoons of power players in 1950s Washington at the peak of the Red Scare.

Amber Sher ‘23 (Costume Drop In Crew) is a senior at Good Counsel.

Special shout-out to his first grade teacher, Ms.

Camille Pozderac
