A Family Legacy Joseph Reed Canavin graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in 1963 as a member of the school’s third graduating class. After earning an engineering degree from the Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve) he moved to Los Angeles, began a career in space technology, earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in celestial mechanics from UCLA, and started a family. He and his wife, Madonna (Murphy), had three children: Shannon, Peter and Erin. Tragically, Joseph was lost in a commercial airline accident in 1978 at the age of 33.

Joseph’s sister, Mary Roderick, and her husband, Denny Roderick ’66, honored his memory by establishing the Joseph Reed Canavin ’63 Memorial Scholarship in 2017 with a gift of $25,000. This year, they contributed additional funds to endow the scholarship, providing funding in perpetuity. The award supports a student who has superior achievement in a STEM curriculum and participates in student extracurricular activities including debate, newspaper, sports or drama.

A former Navy pilot and retired aviation contractor, Denny credits Good Counsel with shaping him early on, and setting him on a path of achievement.

“Good Counsel provided the academic excellence that gave my twin brother, Dick Roderick ’66, and me the opportunity to win a Naval ROTC scholarship to Notre Dame and Marquette Universities respectively,” Denny says. “We both leveraged that opportunity to pursue post graduate degrees, military service and careers in Finance and Aviation.”

The discipline and the math and writing skills taught at Good Counsel served Denny and Dick very well in college and throughout their professional careers, he

says. Also, many of the most memorable teachers Denny has had throughout his life were from Good Counsel, including Brother Alexander, Brother Darius, Brother Meric and Brother Ivo. “They inspired us young men.”

Mary, a retired elementary school teacher, says the idea of honoring her brother through an endowed scholarship was sparked by a similar scholarship her sister and brother-in-law (Dick and his wife, Patti) named for Patti’s brother, Michael Anthony Rosick ’67.

“I thought it would be a good way to honor Joe,” Mary says. “My parents sacrificed so much to send him to Good Counsel, and they were so proud of him. It was such a heartbreak to lose him.”

It is a comfort for Mary to hear from the scholarship winners about how the award has impacted their lives. “Each time the award is made, we receive a very nice personal letter from the recipient, and they have taken it upon themselves to understand who he was and what his contributions were,” she says. Bridgette Kim ’19, the first winner, visited each of the schools Joseph attended and considered them during her college search. “She even read his dissertation to a group of international scientists on satellite design,” Mary says. “I’m very impressed with each one of the scholarship recipients.”

Today, Mary and Denny live in Jacksonville, Fla., where they spend their time volunteering and enjoying hobbies such as golf. Their daughter, Suzanne Noe, is director of human resources for Aviation Systems Engineering Company in Jacksonville. Their second daughter, Amanda Arvai, works with the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore as the head of flight operations for NASA’s James Webb satellite, due to launch in October 2021.

“I think my parents would be very pleased to know we’re honoring Joe’s memory by supporting more students to get the great education at Good Counsel,” Mary says.

Denny says he has seen firsthand the quality of the education students receive, and the beneficial relationships they have with faculty.

“We went back for an alumni reunion and had a thorough tour of the school. I watched the engagement of the students,” Denny says. He advises his fellow alumni who attended the school in Wheaton to visit the new Good Counsel campus if they haven’t yet.

Mary adds, “It’s pretty amazing seeing what the facility is today. We were blown away by things like the science lab and the auditorium; it’s very impressive.”

Denny points to their scholarship as a great way to stay connected to Good Counsel. “A lot of us think about leaving money from our estates as we age. Our thought was to do something now so we can stay engaged with the school, provide those opportunities earlier and benefit from the interactions with the students and the faculty. It’s a great way to stay apprised of what’s going on with my old high school.”

A Commitment to the Falcon Spirit Even before his son was an enrolled student, Todd Handelman, a counselor at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, was impressed with the Ryken Studies Program, a college preparatory program designed for students who have been diagnosed with mild learning differences.

Todd has been on the staff of Good Counsel for eleven years. He and his wife Justine, senior vice president at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, are generous supporters of the school. Their son Garrett, a junior, enjoys many classes, especially the ones in which he has built connections with his teachers.

“Before coming to Good Counsel, Garrett attended a much smaller school, so I was a little nervous on his behalf,” Todd says. “But I was very confident that he would do well because at GC, we offer so many opportunities for the students – educationally, we have the bulk of students participating in college prep courses, honors courses, the Ryken Program.”

“There are also so many opportunities to develop as students and as people through the arts, athletics, debate and speech, academic clubs, and other things,” Todd says.

Right away, Garrett took advantage of AP classes along with Ryken classes and has made close friends through his involvement in the jazz ensemble, clubs, and his classes. “I knew the possibilities and opportunities were there and that’s what I put my faith in,” Todd says.

Garrett has been able to build upon his innate love for music at Good

Counsel, and today he plays a plethora of instruments. He started with piano and drums, then taught himself to play the bass guitar, ukulele, and electric guitar. Recently, he started teaching music to children at a local music studio.

“Music has been a great segue for him into young adulthood, and I think Good Counsel has had a lot to do with that,” Todd says.

His son is also active with several school clubs, including gaming, guitar, anime, hiking (of which Todd is the moderator), and Dungeons and Dragons with Mr. Kolar, the religion teacher. During the pandemic, Garrett has been able to stay involved with his friends through many of these activities via Zoom. “That has been a godsend because my son has stayed connected with friends who have an aptitude for remote socializing. They play games together and socialize,” Todd says.

He gives credit to Ryken Program Director Loren Bass and Counselor Justin Junghans, in addition to the affiliated teachers, for helping Garrett to thrive in ways Todd and Justine would never have imagined. He also values the program’s high level of excellence. “They all do wonderful work. As a parent of a Ryken student, I have so much thanks and appreciation for what they do,” Todd says.

Those who know him say Todd exemplifies the Falcon spirit. He has financially supported Founder’s Day, the Ryken Program, and other areas of need at Good Counsel. In addition, his dedicated counseling of students has helped countless students throughout the years.

“My responsibility is similar to the other five counselors – provide supportive personal counseling to help address any concerns, stressors or issues at school, like grades, interactions with peers or teachers, societal issues, or family issues,” Todd says. The counseling staff strives to help students improve their healthy coping skills and resolve struggles they are having. “It’s hard to be a teenager at any time,” Todd says. “We help students develop strategies to do, feel, and be their best in and out of school.”

To help students improve their grades, the counselors advise them to talk to their teachers and they connect the

students with resources like those found in the media center or NHS tutoring.

Each student has the same counselor throughout their time at Good Counsel.

“When they are seniors, we know them well enough to write comprehensive and impressive recommendation letters for college applications,” Todd says.

He is also part of a unique concussion management multi-disciplinary team that includes Pete Kotz, head athletic trainer; Marianne Kusbit, school nurse, and Kelly Massino, field hockey coach.

Together, they provide a coordinated care response for any student who

has had a concussion, whether it be from athletics or something else.

The program includes medical care, connection to resources and counseling when needed.

“Good Counsel has a broad spectrum of opportunities,” Todd says. There is a large variety, and they are high quality, he adds, which is one reason why he cares so much about the school and why he decided to support it philanthropically.

“We want to ensure those opportunities will be around for others to enjoy, so that’s why we give back.”

Paying it Forward Years ago Bridgette Kim ’19 often wondered about an impressive building she passed on her way to middle school.

Her mother, Margaret Kim, told her that it was the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), and that it was for people who love science and math.

Bridgette’s interest was piqued.

During her time at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, Bridgette’s love for the STEM fields was fostered by teachers she admired, especially STEM Program Director Bill Jones. As a freshman, with his encouragement, she applied and was accepted to take part in a Girls Who Code partnership at APL. The nationwide program strives for gender parity in computing fields. Bridgette also eventually took part in the lab’s competitive ASPIRE program, in which scientists mentor high school students who work on real lab projects and plan to study STEM fields in college. In addition, while in high school she started a successful tutoring business that was featured in a Wall Street Journal article about teen entrepreneurs.

In recognition of Bridgette’s many accomplishments, she was selected to receive the Joseph Reed Canavin ’63 Memorial Scholarship in 2018. “It was wonderful,” Margaret says. She and her husband, Dr. Victor Kim, are proud supporters of Good Counsel and are grateful for the top tier education their daughter received in high school.

“The school is so accommodating,” Margaret says. Bridgette enjoyed having the ability to step into the chapel if she was having a hard day, even though she isn’t Catholic. “It’s a nice warm, inviting environment. The school really helped my daughter and shaped her, and I think Mr. Jones was instrumental in her desire to go into STEM. He was very supportive.

You just need that one person to help you, direct your path in life,” she says.

Today, Bridgette is studying mechanical engineering and computer science at Johns Hopkins University. She participated in an onsite internship at Northrop Grumman this summer, and now works as a Johns Hopkins research assistant in the Institute for NanoBioTechnology. In her spare time, Bridgette tutors youngsters who struggle with math, at no charge, and helps recruit STEM students to Johns Hopkins University. Dedicated to trying to help others, Bridgette says she is willing to mentor any Good Counsel student interested in a STEM field.

Margaret became a member of the Good Counsel Board of Directors in June 2020. She and Victor reflected upon their daughter’s achievements and the relationships she formed at Good Counsel and gave to help build the school’s endowment. “I think it’s wonderful to support the school’s endowment. I’m glad they gave me the opportunity to serve on their Board and I’m excited about that,” she adds.

“Good Counsel really helped my daughter,” Margaret says. Bridgette wanted to attend

a school with a spirituality component, a place where prayer was welcome. “We were so impressed during her time at Good Counsel; she received one-on-one mentoring from teachers. Not only Mr. Jones but also Mr. Justin Junghans, Mr. Dino Remedios and others,” Margaret adds.

The Kim family credits Good Counsel with helping Bridgette gain acceptance to highly selective JHU. They try to pay it forward by supporting Good Counsel philanthropically, Margaret says. Giving back has always been important to the family. Margaret gives her time to many charitable organizations and works to raise money for causes like ending human trafficking, breast cancer research, cystic fibrosis, domestic violence, and Howard County General Hospital.

“I have always felt it is important to help anyone you can, to reach out and improve the lives of people in your community,” she says. That philosophy is shared by all members of the Kim family, as is embodied by Bridgette’s efforts in high school and today, and by the giving spirit her parents imparted to her.

Keep Falcons Falcons Giving Campaign Good Counsel’s Annual Day of Giving has always been a celebration of Falcon pride and the commitment to our students and faculty to excel, serve, and love. Originally planned for April 23, 2020, the 2020 Day of Giving took on a new focus: to support the families now faced with unanticipated financial distress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown. Moved to April 2, 2020, gifts on the Day of Giving provided critical funding to Keep Falcons Falcons, directly assisting those families in financial distress. Support also provided new technology and tools for our faculty to enhance distance learning instruction during this unprecedented time.

We are grateful for the outpouring of support from the Good Counsel community.

Gifts immediately provided 81 Good Counsel families with emergency financial aid beginning in April 2020.

Endowed and Current-Use Scholarships Art Raimo Endowed Scholarship This endowed scholarship was established to honor the legacy of longtime school president and former faculty member, Arthur Raimo. The scholarship provides financial assistance to a rising senior who has performed significant and meaningful community service over the course of their first three years at Good Counsel, as determined by Campus Ministry. The recipient should be within the top 20% of the class and have good character as certified by teachers, counselors, coaches, club moderators, or others.

Thanks to the support of our generous donors, Our Lady of Good Counsel High School is able to provide an unparalleled education to exceptional students of all socio-economic backgrounds to recognize talent and meet financial need. Our current-use scholarships have an immediate impact as the funds you donate are able to be expended right away to benefit students. Our endowed scholarships provide support for Good Counsel students over the long term, creating permanent funds where the principal of the gift is invested to generate earnings that strengthen Good Counsel for years to come.

St. Francis Xavier Scholarship Good Counsel’s Latino scholarship initiative responds to the Archdiocese of Washington’s request to expand the educational opportunities to the Latino community. Good Counsel annually awards St. Francis Xavier scholarships to academically outstanding incoming freshmen of Latino heritage who demonstrate financial need.

Steve Dean ’67 Memorial Endowed Scholarship Friends and family of Steve Dean ’67 who lost his life to complications relating to cerebral palsy in 1976, established the Steve Dean Golf Classic to help raise funding to support scholarships in his memory. To this day, proceeds from the annual tournament are designated towards the Steve Dean ’67 endowed scholarship fund, which provides financial support to a rising senior who embodies Steve’s spirit of optimism, friendship, and camaraderie.

Reaching for the Stars Alejandro Tovar, a senior at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, is enamored with aerospace science, just as Joseph Reed Canavin ’63 was. It is fitting then that Alejandro was the 2020 recipient of the scholarship named for Canavin, an engineer who worked on the vibration of spacecraft.

“Since I was young, I was always interested in how planes and spacecraft work,” Alejandro says. Ever since I heard of the space program at Good Counsel, I was determined to get into it. I wanted to be an aerospace engineer like the late Joseph Reed Canavin.”

When Alejandro learned of the scholarship, named for Canavin by his sister, Mary Roderick, and her husband, Denny ’66, he looked into Canavin’s accomplishments. “I read an article he wrote for NASA about the vibration of spacecraft,” Alejandro says.

“I think it’s amazing,” he says. “It is humbling to receive a scholarship from the family of a guy who wanted to do the exact same thing in his future as you did. He’s a very inspiring man.”

Alejandro is proud to have his academic efforts and his work in the STEM curriculum recognized by the scholarship committee. “It demonstrates that hard work can truly pay off in the long run.”

A huge fan of Star Wars and a member of Good Counsel’s swim and dive team, Alejandro is considering applying to the aerospace program at the University of Maryland. He hopes to earn a master’s degree in the subject eventually, secure an aerospace engineering position, and hopefully be involved in the creation of the next generation of aircraft.

Currently, he is working with a partner from school to develop a delivery drone that can deliver mail within a short radius.

He says his experience at Good Counsel has been amazing.

“The classes are rigorous, and the teachers have helped me push myself to my limits [for me] to be able to apply to top engineering programs. I have so much gratitude toward the entire staff,” he says.

“I’ve always had a childlike infatuation with aircraft; since I was young I consumed many books that talked about the history of aircraft and their inner workings. My curiosity for aerospace and aircraft in general has only grown stronger as I’ve gotten older,” he says.

“After graduation, I plan to come to alumni events, to come back, and see how the school is doing,” he says. Alejandro would also like to give back to the Good Counsel community some day. “If I’m ever in the position, maybe I’ll start a scholarship, to help deserving students to get a good education,” he says.

Alejandro has a variety of interests relating to STEM, including being an active member of the computer robotics clubs at school. “I enjoy building things, experimenting with what kind of configurations work and what doesn’t. It’s a fun hobby,” he says.

“I have so much appreciation for Denny and Mary Roderick. It is very humbling to receive this scholarship. Joseph Canavin was an amazing person and I definitely hope to follow in his footsteps through my career.”

The 37th Annual Steve Dean Golf Classic, held on September 23, 2019, raised over $29,500 in net proceeds to enhance the Steve Dean ’67 Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund. This year, the $5,000 scholarship was awarded to Mary Thorpe ’21 for her 2020-2021 senior year. Mary embodies Steve’s love of Good Counsel through her involvement in academic, social and athletic programs.

The 32nd Grand Celebration took place days before the COVID-19 shut down and stay-at-home orders commenced. Over 400 alumni, current parents, parents of alumni, community partners, and sponsors came together on Saturday, March 7, 2020 to raise over $142,000 towards endowed financial aid. The school’s net profit of $234,526 set a record for this event.
