Letter to the Good Counsel Community

Dear Benefactors and Friends,
At Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, we inspire our students to excel, serve, and love. Your support makes it possible for us to achieve that mission. Thank you for your generous contributions to the success of our students, faculty, and school.
Our students chose ZEAL as the Xaverian Brothers’ value to focus on in the 2023-24 school year. Zeal emboldens and empowers us to face trials and obstacles in our path. From the XBSS Fundamental Principles, they learn that “nothing special is achieved without much labor, effort, and zeal.” They have passion for what they believe in and a drive to do good. With your support, we achieve something quite special each day, instilling zeal in our students and preparing them for a lifetime of achievement.
Almost half of our most recent graduates are attending a US NEWS Top 100 National University or a top 50 Liberal Arts College. Sixty-five percent received a record level of four-year academic scholarship offers totaling over $46 million dollars. Every member of our Class of 2024 was accepted to a
4-year college or university and they are attending higher education institutions in 26 states and Washington, D.C.
Charitable giving enhances all that we offer our students, extends resources available to our faculty, and helps us increase tuition assistance so that more students can benefit from a Xaverian Catholic education. Your compassion for others and your commitment to Our Lady of Good Counsel High School allows us to meet the ever-changing needs of our community and rallies all of us around our mission.
On behalf of all Falcons – past, present, and future – I thank all those listed in this report. Your philanthropy has a truly lasting effect.
May Our Lady of Good Counsel High School and our wonderful students, faculty and staff inspire you to continue supporting us in the years to come. Thank you again for your generous support.
Sincerely,

The Thomas Fortune Fay Student Learning Center

The Thomas Fortune Fay Student Learning Center was made possible thanks to the generosity of former board member, Thomas Fortune Fay, and the Peace Through Love Foundation. The gift of $500,000 represents the largest single gift in school history and allows all students to receive extra academic support.
This center supported 561 individual students in the 2023-2024 school year. Those 561 students signed into the Learning Center 1,483 times. A full-time coordinator, Connie Embley, and Frankie Perfetto ’12 work in the center to provide the necessary support and resources to serve all students seeking extra help.

The Fay Learning Center, established in September 2023, serves all students in need of extra academic help, a place to do work with teachers available to answer questions, and a place to meet with National Honor Society tutors. The Fay Learning Center is open during the school day and four days a week after school. As a school that prides itself on community, the Fay Learning Center fosters this notion through peer education and teacher support to maximize the academic potential of all students.

I choose to donate to Good Counsel because I am both proud of the school’s tradition and confident in its future. Good Counsel’s dedication to creating an environment of acceptance and understanding reflects a meaningful investment in the future of all students. Supporting GC allows me to contribute to a community that not only provides an excellent education but also nurtures compassion and unity.

Good Counsel provided my daughter a supportive and holistic experience. The faculty and staff genuinely enjoy what they do, which translates to a very positive environment. They encouraged my daughter to excel in all aspects of her high school experience, whether that be in the classroom or on the softball field. I am happy to donate to GC given the very positive impact it has had on her.

I donate to my son’s school because I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact it has on his life. The Ryken program has boosted his self-esteem, and the choir and wrestling programs, led by dedicated teachers and coaches who truly believe in him, have helped him grow into a well-rounded individual. It’s an investment in his future that I’m proud to make.

Contributions to Good Counsel provide vital operating funds to ensure that Good Counsel’s immediate and greatest needs are met each year to sustain the excellence of the school and the student experience.
Together, these gifts address expenses not covered by tuition, allowing Good Counsel to make a bold and meaningful commitment to our students and faculty. A commitment that we simply couldn’t fulfill otherwise.
Good Counsel deeply values its supporters and has a number of ways to recognize a donor’s generous contributions:
The 1958 Legacy Circle
honors alumni, parents and friends who have included Good Counsel in their estate plans or have made some other type of planned gift to Good Counsel.
Benefits: Members of the 1958 Legacy Circle are recognized in the school’s Annual Report of Donors, receive a special pin, and are invited to the Society Celebration, an annual leadership-level donor recognition dinner.
The Xaverian Brothers Circle
recognizes those individuals whose lifetime philanthropic impact demonstrates how “in harmony small things grow.” This circle recognizes those who have provided cumulative gifts exceeding $50,000, pledged or paid, to Good Counsel.
Benefits: Members of the Xaverian Brothers Circle are recognized in the school’s Annual Report of Donors, receive a special pin and card for lifetime access to selected Good Counsel events, and are invited to the Society Celebration, an annual leadership-level donor recognition dinner.
The Saint Francis Xavier Circle
recognizes those individuals who make an annual leadership gift of $1,000 or more to the school.
Benefits: Members of the SFX Circle are recognized in the school’s Annual Report of Donors, are invited to the Society Celebration, and receive an annual donor card that provides access to selected Good Counsel events.
The Ryken Loyalty Circle
honors donors who have supported Good Counsel for five or more consecutive years, regardless of giving amount.
Benefits: Members of the Ryken Loyalty Circle are recognized in the school’s Annual Report of Donors and are invited to a special recognition event each year.

Grand Celebration
The 36th Annual Grand Celebration was an evening full of glitz and glam. The 1920s-themed Gala celebrated President John Ciccone’s first year, “getting into the swing of things,” with a roaring good time to strengthen the tradition of providing unique student experiences at Good Counsel through support for our endowment. The event brought together 400 members of the Good Counsel community for a glittering night of philanthropy and a truly Grand Celebration.
Nearly $140,000 was raised to help build the endowment through the Funds for Our Falcons appeal and overall the event raised over $325,000! Thank you to everyone for your generous support and commitment to our students.

As a part of this special evening, we honored five distinguished members of our community. We are grateful to:
» Dr. Patricia Thomas ’93, our Br. Bob Arrowsmith, CFX ’63 Distinguished Alumna of the Year;
» Denny ’66 and Mary Roderick, our 1958 Cornerstone Award recipients;
» Jeffrey Davis and Aimee Loebs-Davis, the Our Lady Award recipients;
» Sandy Spring Bank and Phil Mantua ’76, the Concordia Award recipients; and
» Karen Egan ’94, the Magnificat Award recipient.
