HISTORY OF AMBER Age of amber is 35-140 million years. It has been an object of exchange, trade, crafts, raw material for the production of jewellery and amulets. Later, pharaohs and priests of Egypt wore amber jewellery: the crown of King Tutankhamen has been decorated therewith.

Rich Romans always carried amber balls on them, rubbed with their hands, knowing that amber increases strength.

In China and Japan, amber of ch erry colour reminiscent of the dragon blood has been especially esteemed; it has been worn in the imperial family.

Amber is found of different shapes and sizes in nature: from fractions of grams to several kilograms.

LOCATION OF AMBER Deposits and discoveries of amber are known in the Arabian Peninsula, the Baltic States, Sweden, Germany, Poland, Romania, Mexico, the Alaska Peninsula, islands of Sicily, Sakhalin, and the Commander Islands. Fair amount of amber has been found in Ukraine: in Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Volyn, Rivne, and Kherson regions. In production quantities, amber is mined in open pits in the layer of “blue earth� at a depth of 10 meters. Amber is mined by an open-pit method from a depth of 12 to 50 meters, and of 5-12 meters in Ukraine.

All extracted raw material is divided into three classes: ornamental (semi-precious), moulding amber and varnish.

PHYSICAL ROPERTIES OF AMBER Amber palette contains all colours of the rainbow, from milk to brown.

The true beauty of amber is revealed after polishing. Amber is fragile, easily broken by an impact or at a fall, but at the same time, is flexible. This is its very valuable quality, thanks to which the stone is kind to dressing. Amber can be sawn, cut, drilled, dressed, and polished.

It becomes softened and then melts when heated. This property is used in the hardening and pressing.

HEALTH-GIVING PROPERTIES OF AMBER Amber is undoubtedly beautiful. But unlike all the other stones that are used by people in the decoration and jewellery amber is health-giving, it was used in the treatment of many diseases for centuries.

There is much talk about the danger of free radicals, their role in the development of deadly diseases. A free radical can be eliminated in the only way, by adding one electron thereto or taking away therefrom. It is achieved by antioxidant activity of amber as a source of free electrons.

‫تاريخ الكهرمان‬ ‫يرجع تاريخ اكتشاف الكهرمان إىل‬ ‫‪ 140-35‬مليون سنة؛ إذ نجح أسالفنا‬ ‫يف استخراجه واستخدامه‪ .‬ولطاملا كان‬ ‫الكهرمان أداة للمقايضة والتجارة‬ ‫والحرف ومادة خام تستخدم إلنتاج‬ ‫املجوهرات والتامئم‪ .‬كام اعتاد قدماء‬ ‫املرصيون والكهنة ارتداء مجوهرات‬ ‫مصنوعة من الكهرمان‪ ،‬مثل تاج‬ ‫توت عنخ آمون الذي كان مطعامُ‬ ‫بقطع من الكهرمان ‪.‬‬ ‫وكان أغنياء الرومان دامئاً ما يحملون‬ ‫معهم كرات من الكهرمان يفركون‬ ‫بها أيديهم‪ ،‬معتقدين أن الكهرمان‬ ‫يزيد من قوتهم ‪.‬‬

‫تنترش رواسب الكهرمان واكتشافاته يف شبه الجزيرة العربية ودول البلطيق والسويد‬ ‫وأملانيا وبولندا ورومانيا واملكسيك وشبه جزيرة أالسكا وجزر صقلية وسخالني‬ ‫وكوماندر‪ .‬وقد وجدت كمية وفرية من الكهرمان يف أوكرانيا‪ :‬تحديدا ً يف كييف‬ ‫وجيتومري وفولني وروفنو وخريسون ‪.‬‬ ‫بالنسبة للكميات املنتجة‪ ،‬يتم التنقيب عن الكهرمان يف املناجم املفتوحة يف طبقة‬ ‫«األرض الزرقاء» عىل عمق ‪ 10‬أمتار‪ .‬ويتم التنقيب عن الكهرمان بطريقة املناجم‬ ‫املفتوحة عىل عمق يرتاوح بني ‪ 50-12‬مرتا ً‪ ،‬وعىل عمق ‪ 12-5‬مرتا ً يف أوكرانيا‬ ‫تحديدا ً‪ .‬ويتم تقسيم جميع املواد الخام املستخرجة إىل ثالثة فئات‪ :‬أحجار الزينة‬ ‫(شبه الكرمية) وقوالب الكهرمان وطالء الورنيش ‪.‬‬

‫ويف الصني واليابان يحظى الكهرمان ذو اللون األحمر القاين الذي يشبه‬ ‫لون دم التنني مبكانة خاصة‪ ،‬إذ يرتديه أفراد العائلة اإلمرباطورية‪ .‬ويتوفر‬ ‫الكهرمان يف الطبيعة بأشكال وأحجام مختلفة‪ :‬تبدأ من أقل من الجرام‬ ‫وتصل إىل عدة كيلوجرامات ‪.‬‬ ‫‪3‬‬
