Digestion

Emulsifiers improve interactions between oil and water by lowering the surface tension. In the digestive tract, they improve fat distribution, increase enzyme-substrate interaction and optimize the utilization of energy in the feed.

Feed digestion is influenced by many parameters including the age and life phase of the animal, gut health, and quality of feed ingredients. Good digestion is essential to optimize feed conversion and utilization of nutrients. The addition of emulsifiers into the feed can improve fat digestion.

The ability to digest dietary fat increases with the maturation of the gut. Young animals have limited lipase and bile salt levels which could make fat digestion challenging. The addition of an emulsifier to the diet will supplement bile salts in the emulsification process by increasing the total surface area available for lipases and improving total fat emulsification. By doing so, the addition of an emulsifier can help alleviate the stress on the digestive tract.

Energy source

Compared to long chain triglycerides, medium chain triglycerides have a shorter chain length that allows it to be rapidly digested and metabolized in the digestive system. They are a readily available energy source.

Radiamuls® MCT, Medium chain triglycerides

Medium chain triglycerides (MCT) are rapidly digested and metabolized, enabling them to be an e cient source of energy. These molecules can be absorbed by the intestinal wall without the need for micelle formation or enzymatic hydrolysis. Inside the intestinal wall, MCT is split into fatty acids and glycerin and are then absorbed directly into the bloodstream. This makes MCT an ideal quick energy source for animals in the early life phase or in stressful conditions.

Unlike MCT, lipase and bile salts are indispensable for the digestion of long chain tryglycerides (LCT). LCT are hydrolyzed in the intestinal lumen to free fatty acids. These are absorbed into the intestinal wall, re-esterified into LCT and secreted as chylomicrons. They are transported by the lymphatic system and often stored as fat depots.

Bacteria

Short and medium chain monoglycerides possess antimicrobial properties by disturbing the integrity of microbial cell membranes. They are capable of mitigating pathogen growth, improving gut health and supporting the immune system.

The combination of short and medium chain monoglycerides are effective against a range of bacteria. While short-chain monoglycerides are effective against gram-negative bacteria like E. Coli and Salmonella, medium-chain monoglycerides haveanantibacterialeffectongram-positivebacteria like Streptococcus and Clostridium.

Theantimicrobialactivityoffattyacidsandtheiresters is mainly linked to the disruption of phospholipid membranes. Monoglycerides are typically more biologically potent than their respective fatty acids. Monoglycerides have a higher pKA-value, lower critical micelle concentration and remain non-ionic across physiologically relevant pH conditions. Free fatty acids are anionic at neutral pH and non-ionic at acidic pH; therefore their antimicrobial activity are pH dependent.
