A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Our School was founded in 2001 “to better align the mission, vision and values of five departments housed in three different colleges and schools.” We started with the Departments of Social Work and Communicative Disorders from the College of Liberal Arts, the Departments of Exercise Science and Leisure Management and Family and Consumer Sciences from the School of Education, and Court Reporting from the Law School. The alignment of these departments and degree programs was intended to foster more interactions among related disciplines.

The School of Applied Sciences was designed to emphasize collaborative research, scholarship, and cross-disciplinary professional services to individuals, families and our community.

Over the last twenty years, we have grown into the University of Mississippi’s third largest academic unit. We are home to 2,600 students and now serve 6 departments, offer 10 undergraduate, 10 master’s and 4 doctoral degree programs. We serve the nationally acclaimed Institute of Child Nutrition and house the Center for Health and Sports Performance and the Jackson Heart Study Vanguard Center at Oxford. In addition, the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders operates the Speech and Hearing Clinic and the Department of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies recently launched the Center for Evidence-Based Policing and Reform.

Throughout our history and remarkable growth, we’ve remained true to the founding principles on which our School was created. Now, we ask you to join us at a very exciting time in our history – a time where we are reimagining what will be a very bright future for our School. Our first Advisory Board meeting will be an occasion to highlight some of the best things our School has to offer. It will be an opportunity for us to plan together and a time for us to learn from your experiences, knowledge, wisdom and insights. We welcome this time to present some tangible ways you can join our efforts to learn, lead and serve.

ADVISORY BOARD CHARGE

Advisory Board Members are entrusted to: • Serve as an ambassador and advocate for the School • Commit to attend and be prepared for semiannual board meetings to occur during the fall and spring academic semesters • Advise the dean and School of Applied Sciences leadership on key initiatives • Provide feedback from your discipline and expertise to inform and assist faculty in the development and revision of degree programs and course offerings • Engage with our faculty, staff and students in Grand Challenges* through networking, advocacy, effort and fundraising • Cultivate future membership on the Board * See p.36 for general description of School of Applied Sciences Grand Challenges

ADVISORY BOARD COMMITMENT Membership Advisory Board members are appointed by the dean of the School of Applied Sciences. The dean appoints discipline-specific members after consultation with University of Mississippi Development and leadership within each academic unit. The dean will also consult Advisory Board members when filling vacant Board positions. Appointments will be for three years and can be renewed at the discretion of the dean for subsequent terms. Advisory Board appointments begin each year at the spring meeting.

Leadership The Board Chair shall be designated by the dean to act in concert with the dean on behalf of the Board.

The Board Chair may be asked to act on behalf of the Board between regular meetings.

The role of the Board Chair is to: • Serve as counsel to the dean in preparing Board meeting agendas • Preside at Board meetings to accomplish agenda items in a timely manner; articulate the purpose and scope of the Board’s work; promote appropriate civility and decorum; solicit full participation of Board members, and; note potential topics for future Board meetings • Represent the Board in such venues as may call for such representation The Board Chair shall serve a term of two years and can be renewed for one additional term at the discretion of the dean.

A Vice-Chair shall be appointed to act in the Board Chair’s absence. The Vice-Chair shall serve a term of two years and can be renewed for one additional term at the discretion of the dean.

Vacancies in either the Board Chair or Vice-Chair positions may be filled by the dean to serve the balance of the unexpired term.

Sub-Committees Ad-Hoc Subcommittees may be established to address specific action items and activities germane to the School of Applied Sciences. Subcommittees may include Board members and individuals beyond Board membership with expertise and interests unique to the task at hand. These groups are appointed by the Board Chair and responsible to the School of Applied Sciences Advisory Board.

Meetings The Advisory Board will ordinarily meet two times per year. By virtue of accepting membership on the Board, and unless extenuating circumstances prevail, regular attendance at meetings is expected. The dean may replace a Board member for reasons of non-participation.

ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS Joey Bullock is a Senior Property & Casualty Producer at BXS Insurance specializing in providing insurance options for large general and industrial contractors, complex builders risk programs, large public entities and marine insurance. For over a decade, Joey has focused his attention on creating unique solutions for sophisticated clientele to deliver risk management and risk transfer programs to help organizations and protect their assets. He provides clients with workable answers for their risk needs.

In 2009 Joey started his professional career in London where he completed an internship program with Lloyd’s of London and Willis Global office of London. Joey is a native of Pascagoula,MS and a graduate of the University of Mississippi. He currently resides in Oxford, Ms with his wife Fisher and their son Henry.

Their son Henry is currently enrolled in the Hill program at the University of Mississippi.

Winston Collier is a Partner with Lucas Compton, a communications, government relations and law firm, with offices in Washington, London, Austin and Oxford. He represents corporate clients in all industries, with a focus on those in the healthcare sector. Prior to joining Lucas Compton, Winston served as Chief Legal Counsel of ARcare/KentuckyCare/MississippiCare, a large primary care clinic system with sites throughout the Mid-South. He currently resides with his wife, Gentry and their four children in Oxford, MS. Winston grew up in Searcy, AR and attended the University of Mississippi from 1999-2003, obtaining a BA in English and a BA in Political Science. During his time at Ole Miss, Winston was very involved in many aspects of campus life, being inducted into the Ole Miss Student Hall of Fame before graduating. He left Mississippi to attend law school at the University of Arkansas, but always hoped that his path would lead him back to Oxford. In 2015, Winston’s third child was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. He and his wife began researching programs and therapies throughout the Mid-South. Traveling around the world specializing in exercise physiology and wellness with the federal government, alumna Rhea Daniels (MS 99) never imagined she would one day serve as the well-being services manager for the Coca-Cola Company headquartered in Atlanta.

“I had absolutely no idea I would end up where I am,” Daniels said. “It wasn’t something I planned. I knew I wanted to help people, and I kind of let the stars align and guide me on this journey. So far I’ve been pleasantly surprised and pleased with the opportunities I’ve been presented.”

Raised in Clarksville, Tenn., Daniels graduated from Clarksville High School in 1991 with her mind set on attending nearby Tennessee State University in Nashville.

“When I went to college I had already made the decision that I wanted to be a doctor – that I wanted to help people,” Daniels said. “While I was at TSU I had the opportunity to go to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, for a summer internship and met all different types of physicians and physicians’ assistants. We

Janet Dickens serves as an Assistant Director with the Mississippi Small Business Development Center. She is currently working to develop communications and programming for the COVID-19 response. Janet joined the Small Business Development Center after 7 years in the hospitality industry as a COO, CFO, and General Legal Counsel for Charter Road Hospitality, Inc., a hotel group based in Oxford, Mississippi with 5 branded hotels and 130 employees.

She is an adjunct instructor with the UM School of Business for Business Communications and will teach Selection and Placement in the Fall.

Janet is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi School of Business, where she obtained a BSBA with an Accounting emphasis. Janet graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 2012 and was admitted to practice law in Mississippi thereafter. She furthered her educational development with a Master of Laws in Taxation from the University of Florida Levin College of Law. When Janet is not working, she and her husband enjoy traveling.

Darlene A. Gore, (M.C.D., CCC-SLP ‘76) Following graduating Ole Miss, Darlene began her career as a speech pathologist in Jackson, TN before founding a private practice in Grenada, Miss.

She served as Administrative Director of Grenada Lake Medical Center heading up Outpatient Rehabilitation, Transitional Care Unit, and Home Health Services. In the First Steps Program , she worked as Quality Monitor, and consulted with several school districts throughout the state.. Darlene served as President of the Miss. Speech Language Hearing association in 2012, as well as the Ole Miss Alumni Board 2014-17. Darlene is the author of : I Have Cancer / I want to Live. She now lives in Grenada and Madison where she is currently providing therapy services to the Madison County schools.

She is married to Jay Gore III, J.D. ’74, and they have two children, Meredith Gore Warf, CPA, DPT; and Grace Gore Sturdivant, Doctor of Audiology. All are graduates of Ole Miss.

Jeff Larkin is a graduate of Ole Miss receiving his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and his Masters of Arts in Criminal Justice. As student-athlete at Ole Miss he was Co-Captain of the Men’s CrossCountry team and a member of the M-Club. Mr. Larkin has an extensive experience in both the public and private sectors with his career starting with the Memphis Police Department. During that time he was in patrol, supervised the Research and Development Unit and was the department primary hostage negotiator. Larkin entered the private sector as a Senior Security Specialist for FedEx based in Chicago and Indianapolis. In addition to his investigative responsibilities he was responsible for the security operations for FedEx for the 1988 Winter Calgary Olympics and the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics. During this time Larkin served as Vice-Chair for 10 years for Transportation Security for the American Society of Industrial Security. Larkin served as Director of Security and Safety for Office Depot Business Services Division and for the past 24 years has been an area manager for AT&T Corporate Security based in Indianapolis. He received the Dr. Chester Quarles Alumni Meritorious Service Award in 2012. Larkin is still an active Indiana HS soccer and track official and is an assistant coach for the Carmel HS Boys Rugby team. For the past 11 years he has served as a reserve deputy with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Jeff and his wife Alecia (Stafford) have two children and five grandchildren.

They live in Carmel, Indiana.

Gerry Logan, Jr. CPRE is the Mississippi Sales Representative for Musco Sports Lighting, the world leader in lighting. His current responsibilities including providing sports lighting opportunities to parks and recreation departments, school districts and other entities with athletic facility lighting needs within the Mississippi territory. Since 1976, Musco Lighting has specialized in the design and manufacture of sports and transportation/infrastructure lighting solutions around the world. Musco’s project list includes numerous collegiate and professional sports stadiums, including TD Garden, home of the Boston Celtics, Mile High Stadium, home of the Denver Broncos and many others. Gerry previously worked as Executive Director for the Starkville Parks and Recreation Department and has over 10 years in the municipal parks and recreation field. Gerry graduated from the University of Mississippi with his B. A. in Parks and Recreation Management in 2010 and has been a member of the program’s advisory board since then. He earned his M.S. in Recreation, Parks and Tourism Sciences from Texas A&M University in 2017 and has been an NRPA Fellow, AAPRA Extern and 2019 recipient of Continued on p.39

Libby Lytle started her law enforcement career in Florida, in 1990.

She moved to Mississippi in 1993 and then to Oxford in 1996 to finish her education at Ole Miss in 2001 with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. She worked her way up at the Oxford Police Department from sergeant, lieutenant and then captain in 2007.

She went back to Ole Miss in 2009 to complete her Masters of Criminal Justice in 2015. She was an adjunct instructor of Criminal Justice at Northwest Community College 2011- 2015 and then started as an adjunct instructor at Ole Miss in 2015. She retired from law enforcement in 2017 at the rank of captain, with over 27 years of law enforcement service. During her career, she was a domestic violence instructor, and a self-defense instructor for both law enforcement and citizens. She also provided training at the Mississippi Law Enforcement Training Academy, and Lafayette County Part-Time Academy, along with several community groups and organizations. Since retiring from law enforcement, Libby works as an adult victim service coordinator at Family Crisis Services of Northwest Mississippi. Her focus is advocating and supporting

Ian Navarro is the Chief Operating Officer for What Chefs Want Colorado a wholesale food distribution company headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky and operating warehouses in eight states.

Navarro began his passion for food in high school, moving along to pursue a degree in Hospitality Management at Ole Miss.

After graduation, Ian has immersed himself in foodservice.

Traveling the world meeting with chefs, artisans, producers and learning about the food supply chain.

Navarro has assisted with 14 acquisitions during his eight year tenure with What Chefs Want, specializing in the What Chef culture, products and services. He recently relocated from Nashville, Tennessee to Denver, Colorado with his two children and two dogs.

As an Associate Professor of Implementation Science at Wake Forrest, I am a behavioral scientist who conducts community-engaged research focused on the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based strategies for the promotion of health behaviors in youth and adults. I also conduct epidemiological research examining the behavioral determinants of obesity, cardiometabolic health and related comorbidities. I am especially passionate about eliminating health disparities, so everyone can live a healthy and fulfilling life regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, or geography. I am actively engaged in global health research, and I regularly serve as a visiting scholar at Wuhan University in Wuhan, Hubei, China.

I have been fortunate to receive funding for my research from the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the de Beaumont Foundation, among others.

Lisa Redditt Paris was born in Nancy, France to Mississippi parents. Her family returned to Mississippi where she began her study of art at the age of 5 under the tutelage of her French-German instructor. After 13 years of art study in Greenwood, Mississippi, Lisa accepted an art scholarship from Mississippi University for Women. She continued her studies at the University of Mississippi where she received a B.S. degree with an emphasis on art and interior design. Lisa is married to Lee Paris, has 3 children -all Ole Miss grads, two granddaughters, and two grandsons. Her daughters, Rachel Paris Pritchett and Vivian Bardin Paris, both are artist and have participated in several mother-daughter shows.

Currently, Lisa has private studios in Jackson, and Oxford, Mississippi. She is a member of Oil Painters of America, the Mississippi State Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and a founding member and immediate past President of the Mississippi Oil Painter’s Association. Lisa has successfully enjoyed several one-woman shows and is represented in galleries throughout the south.

Chan Patel is the President of Charter Road Hospitality, Inc. Charter Road Hospitality, Inc. operates and owns through other entities 5 branded hotels in Oxford, Mississippi

Chan has been in the hospitality industry for over 30 years.

In 1990, Chan’s family purchased the historic, Ole Miss Motel in Oxford, Mississippi. The family actively managed the independent hotel while building equity with a vision to build a branded property.

In 2001, the family opened an 81 room Holiday Inn Express in Oxford, Mississippi. 17 years later, Chan actively manages the property through Charter Road Hospitality, Inc. CRH is proud to say this property completed a modified formula blue renovation in 2017. The current license with IHG runs until 2025.

In 2003, the family opened an 80 room Hampton Inn (Oxford West) in Oxford, Mississippi. The property has a 20year franchise license. In 2011, Chan opened another Hampton Inn (Conference Center) also located in Oxford, Mississippi. This property has 88 rooms and caters well to group business due to the large meeting space located on property. In 2014, Chan opened the TownePlace Suites by Marriott, a 95 suite property.

Mike Sweet currently holds the position of President of the Food Division for Ben E. Keith Company. He serves on the board for Ben E. Keith Company, IFDA (International Foodservice Distributors Association), Markon Inc., and DMA (Distribution Market Advantage). He is also on the IFDA Executive Committee.

He began his career with Ben E. Keith Company in May 1999.

Over the years, Mike has held positions in sales, purchasing, and operations. Prior to working at Ben E. Keith Company, Mike worked in commercial real estate and for former U.S. Senator Phil Gramm.

Mike graduated from Ole Miss with a BA in 1994.

Mike’s current community endeavors include: membership in the Salesmanship Club of Dallas; on the Board of Directors of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association; member of the Touchdown Club benefiting The Rise School of Dallas; member of Young Presidents Organization (YPO); and associate member of the Greater Dallas Restaurant Association.

Tommie is the director of the Scottish Rite Center for Childhood Language Disorders in the Children’s Hearing and Speech Center at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, and is an associate professor of pediatrics at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He specializes in communication disorders in children, with a specific focus on children who stutter. Dr. Robinson’s research and writings have focused on normal fluency behaviors in children and adults, as well as service delivery to children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Tommie Robinson found his career path very early—in seventh grade—when he decided to become a speech-language pathologist.

His choice was rooted in his love of family and his awareness of the fluency disorders that had affected four generations of his family, including his sister, brother, uncle, and great aunt. Robinson’s path led him from his home in Mississippi to earn his PhD at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and to his current position as director of the Scottish Rite Center for Childhood Language Disorders in the Department of Hearing and Speech at Children’s National Medical Center in the nation’s capital. At every step of his professional journey, he was motivated by a love for clinical service and a passion for leadership. Beyond his professional roles, Robinson also sings tenor and is a master baker, a talent he shares with his nephews, nieces, and godchildren.

Susan Thames is the Chairman of the University of Mississippi Foundation Board and serves on the Ole Miss Women’s Council Board of Directors. She is also the Chairman of the MIND Center (Memory Impairment Neurodegenerative Dementia Center) Advisory Board at UMMC. Susan serves on the Board of Directors at Friends of Children’s Hospital, as well as the Applied Sciences Advisory Board and Communication Sciences and Disorders Advisory Board Council. Susan assists with the 2020 University of Mississippi Campaign and Planning Committee and the Campaign Committee for the Children’s of Mississippi Hospital.

Candis Couch Varnell received her B.S. undergraduate degree from The University of Texas and her master’s degree in Education Administration from Texas A&M. Her career at Ole Miss began in 2005. After 15 years of mentoring, guiding and preparing students for careers in hospitality management, Candis retired as lecturer and Internship Director from the Nutrition & Hospitality Management department. Before moving to Oxford, she taught high school in the Richardson (TX) Independent School District for ten years. Teaching young adults is her life’s rewarding work.

In retirement, Candis has embarked on her second career as a travel advisor with BOOKED! Travel, an affiliate of Strong Travel, Dallas TX. She wants to explore the world and take you there, too!

V A R N E L L

Joey graduated from the University of Mississippi in 2003 with a B.S. degree in FCS with an emphasis in Hospitality Management. He is often referred to as the “first freshman” of Hospitality Management. A native Oxonian, he is a third generation philanthropist to Ole Miss, and other state institutions, both athletically and academically including the first endowed scholarship to Nutrition and Hospitality Management. Not one to dwell on previous accolades, Joey prefers to focus on his vision for the future to positively develop co-workers and future generations with the goal of enhancing the state he proudly calls home. Joey is married to the former MaryGrace Schneider of St. Louis, MO, and they have one son, Joey Jr.

Joseph (Joey) R. Vasilyev is the Chief Executive Officer of V2, Inc., which owns and operates Taco Bell restaurants in Mississippi. He is, also, Chief Executive Officer of Vasco Properties, Inc., a private real estate holding company. Joey dedicates much of his time to the national council for Taco Bell Franchisees (FRANMAC) on which he serves as Chairman of the Profit, Growth & Assets Committee and is an Executive Committee member. Joey has additional hospitality industry work experience as a Casino Host for MGM Resorts at its Beau Rivage property in Biloxi. Joey is one of the former owners of The Oxford Eagle, Inc., where his family co-owned and operated the local newspaper for eight decades.

FACULTY & STAFF MEMBERS

Dr. Grandjean oversees one of the fastest-growing schools on campus. The school, which seeks to improve the lives and conditions of people and communities across Mississippi and the region, also has a growing research imprint at UM, with more than $8.4 million in external funding received in fiscal year 2018.

While at Baylor, Grandjean served as associate dean for research collaboration and graduate studies, director of the university’s Division of Health Professions, and as a professor in the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation in the Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences. While at Baylor, he also served as director of the Baylor Laboratories for Exercise Science and Technology, and as director of The Center for Healthy Living. A nationally recognized professor and researcher, Grandjean has more than 30 years of experience in education.Grandjean received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Anderson University in Indiana in 1986, his master’s in exercise physiology from Texas Christian University in 1992 and his doctorate in exercise physiology from Texas A&M University in 1996. Grandjean is a member of the American Physiological Society, the American College of Sports Medicine, the National Strength and Conditioning Association and several other professional affiliations.

Mark Loftin has served as The University of Mississippi since 2006 as a Department Chair (HESRM, 2006-13) and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, 2013 –present. In his current role he works with faculty, students and staff in various endeavors including curriculum development, tenure and promotion and student advising and other pertinent school-wide issues. Over a 38-year career in higher education, his exercise physiology research has centered on cardiorespiratory performance, body composition and childhood obesity.

Allison Ford-Wade is a Professor of Health Promotion and Behavior and serves as Associate Dean of Research and Community Engagement. Her research interests include community health issues and low bone density among young adults.

Melinda Wells Valliant, PhD, RD, LD, CSSD, is the Chair of NHM and director of The Center for Health and Sport Performance. Dr. Valliant completed her doctoral studies at The University of Mississippi in University, Mississippi. Building upon a clinical nutrition and an exercise science background, her research focuses on best practices in sports medicine particularly related to health and safety of athletes.

S T E P T E A U - W A T S O N

Dr. Desiree Stepteau-Watson is Interim Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work at the University of Mississippi. Dr. Stepteau-Watson completed her undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice at Loyola University, Chicago. She also completed graduate studies at the University of Illinois Chicago, earning the Master of Social Work and Ph.D. in Social Work degrees. Desiree has had a long career administering human and social service programs that address issues ranging from mental health, substance abuse, child welfare, and maternal and child health. Her current research focuses on social support within the African American family, prisoner reentry, and social work education. Dr. Stepteau-Watson serves as a Commissioner on the Diversity and Social and Economic Justice Commission and also serves on the Task Force on Anti-Racism for the Council on Social Work Education. She has published several peerreviewed journal articles, and has presented numerous papers at juried conferences and has also been invited to conduct many workshops across the country.

Vishakha Rawool, Ph.D., CCC-A, CPS/A, FRSM, FAAA, Chair & Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders at the University of Mississippi, is an author of two widely used text-books titled ‘Hearing Conservation in Occupational, Recreational, Educational, and Home Settings’ and ‘Auditory Processing Deficits: Assessment and Intervention’ published by Thieme. She also has numerous funded research publications and has served as an expert guest speaker at national and international conference. She is a trilingual, highly experienced clinician and her current research interests include age-related deficits in speech perception, hearing conservation and remote collaborative communication. She has served on several committees of national organizations including the American Academy of Audiology, American Auditory Society and the National Hearing Conservation Association.

Heather Landry Shirley, PhD, ATC, BCTMB/LMT, currently serves as Assistant Professor and Program Director of Athletic Training, as well as the Executive Associate Director of the Center for Health & Sports Performance. Dr. Shirley previously served as a clinical athletic trainer for the University of Mississippi for nearly 19 years. Her current research interests are athletic training education and sport-related concussion/MTBI in both collegiate and youth sports.

Dr. Minsoo Kang, a Professor and Chair of the Health, Exercise Science, and Recreation Management department and a Director of SAS Analytics Lab at the University of Mississippi, earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Seoul National University in South Korea and his doctorate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. CENTERS AND INSTITUTES INSTITUTE OF CHILD NUTRITION The Institute of Child Nutrition (ICN), part of the School of Applied Sciences at The University of Mississippi, is the only federally funded national center dedicated to applied research, education and training, and technical assistance for child nutrition programs. The Institute was established

by Congress in the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 1989. It is funded by a grant administered through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service (FNS). The specific duties of the Institute can be found in Section 21 of the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act. The Institute’s mission is to provide information and services that promote the continuous improvement of child nutrition programs.

As a national center, the Institute provides information, conducts applied research, and offers training and education opportunities using appropriate technology.

CENTER FOR HEALTH AND SPORT PERFORMANCE The University of Mississippi Center for Health & Sports Performance exists to create, share, and apply knowledge in a free, open and inclusive environment of intellectual inquiry. This is done through research to create best practices and validate current practices; creating applied experiences for students to explore career fields within a comprehensive athletic health and sport performance environment; and through creating service to the community through professional development, performance nutrition services, strength and conditioning camps, sports medicine cost containment, consulting to small colleges and high schools, and performance training.

JHS VANGUARD CENTER AT OXFORD The Schools of Applied Sciences and Pharmacy have collaborated to bring Jackson Heart Study Vanguard Center to the Oxford campus at the University of Mississippi. The Jackson Heart Study is the largest single-site, prospective, epidemiological investigation of cardiovascular disease among African Americans. It is a population-based longitudinal study with a purpose to engage and mentor faculty and graduate students in collaborative research, analysis, and ancillary study requests.

The Vanguard Center at Oxford includes but is not limited to basic and applied research related to ethnicities, health disparities, socio-cultural, and other social determinants of health and disease risk factors for cardiovascular related disease.

ANALYTICS LAB

The School of Applied Sciences (SAS) Analytics Lab provides cross-disciplinary resources for measurement and statistical consulting and training in response to a need for improved measurement and more complicated methodology and statistical analyses. The mission of the lab is to provide measurement and statistical assistance to faculty, staff, and students at The University of Mississippi; provide an educational experience to graduate students through training as statistical consultants; and encourage interdisciplinary collaborations both within and outside of the University.

CLINICS UM Speech and Hearing Clinic The University of Mississippi Speech and Hearing Clinic has been on campus and providing services since 1966. The clinic has dual function. The first function of the Clinic is to provide excellence in clinical education for graduate students enrolled in the CSD department. The second function is to provide the highest quality of speechlanguage-hearing services to patients in an effective and efficient manner.

Nutrition Clinic The University of Mississippi’s Nutrition Clinic provides nutrition services to the University as well as to the public. The clinic also offers comprehensive nutrition services for University students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding area. The clinic staff fully licensed and registered dietitians in our clinic who provide consultation, evaluation, and intervention for many nutritional service needs.

APPL IED GERONTOLOGY

An interprofessional (IPE) curriculum is paired with community-based, service-learning experiences with real agencies that interface with the public. Besides general education requirements, students who pursue the B.S. in Applied Gerontology take related courses in communication disorders, advanced composition, nutrition and hospitality management, sport and recreation administration, exercise science and general business. Students will learn about the legal environment as it applies to an aging population, human behavior and the social environment, and aging in the 21st century. Students elect a recognized minor or second major to help them specialize in an area related to their career aspirations.

GRAND CHALLENGES Grand Challenge 1: Strengthen and expand services for children and young people with speech and language deficits.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, nearly 1 in 12 (7.7%) U.S. children ages 3-17 has had a disorder related to voice, speech, language or swallowing. Our Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders has been a leader in this area for years. However, our clinical services have been limited, and there are so many families that urgently need these services. We are well positioned to strengthen programming and expand services through art therapy, tele-practice, strategic partnerships with education, public health and more. How do we broaden our services and build programming that can be shared with others?

Grand Challenge 2: Revive our hospitality industry Nationwide, leisure and hospitality employment dropped by more than 7.5 million jobs immediately following the business closures and travel restrictions issued in March 2020. Recovery in our region has started, but job estimates remain 23% lower than pre-COVID employment. The Department of Nutrition and Hospitality Management is well suited to work in concert with industry partners to revitalize our hospitality in Mississippi and the Mid-South. We have an opportunity to become an education and training epicenter for culinary sciences, food services, lodging and tourism. How do we provide unmatched training and facilitate economic growth?

Grand Challenge 3: Evidence-based Policing Our nation’s recent civil unrest has been linked to substandard policing. Law enforcement agencies are faced with reexamining their organizations, professional training, policies and standards, community engagement and a host of other issues that will determine how we protect our citizens and maintain law and order into the future. The issues are complex and require better means of collecting, compiling, analyzing and interpreting data. With the world’s top criminologist and a host of cutting-edge researchers, our Department of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies is poised to lead these efforts by developing a Center for Evidence-Based Policing and Reform. How do we inform policing agencies and shape public policy for enhancing safety and building trust?

Grand Challenge 4: Improving mental health and wellness According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama have the least access to mental health care and highest rates of imprisonment in the U.S. Depression among youth is growing. One in six adult Mississippians is now over 60 years of age and among these, almost 55,000 have been diagnosed with dementia. Mental health services in our state and region are overwhelmed. Faculty in Applied Gerontology, Athletic Training, Criminal Justice, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Exercise Science, Nutrition, Public Health and Social Work all have roles in identifying and treating mental health-related issues at a lower level of acuity. How do we address the myriad of mental health issues facing our population?

said. “While I was at TSU I had the opportunity to go to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, for a summer internship and met all different types of physicians and physicians’ assistants. We had one visitor in particular give a presentation that was a public health educator and exercise physiologist. And what he was about really resonated with me. The basic premise was to help people to be well and have a higher quality of life for a longer period of time as opposed to just dealing with it once they become ill. That made a lot of sense to me.”

After returning from her internship Daniels decided to forego medical school and instead pursue an advanced degree in exercise physiology, wellness and health promotion. And Ole Miss had just the program she was looking for.

“I chose Ole Miss for a myriad of reasons,” Daniels said. “I guess a major point for me was it was a diverse university and community. I felt like that was important for me to really be able to develop and hone in on my own people skills. The other reason I chose Ole Miss was because one of my mentors Dr. Len Kravitz, who I met previously at an American College of Sports Medicine conference, had started teaching there. So it was kind of like fate.”

After receiving a master of science degree in 1999, Daniels accepted a job with the federal government in Las Vegas at a test site helping employees ranging from medical professionals to fire fighters and security personnel stay in shape physically in order to do their job to the best of their ability.

“I was there for a year and a half then started going to American College of Sports Medicine conferences and met all kinds of different people,” Daniels said. “Each conference I went to people would offer me different promotional opportunities, so I was able to get promotions within the government.”

Those promotions led Daniels to a variety of jobs across the country with the federal government serving as exercise physiologist for the U.S. Air Force, installation health promotion manager for the U.S. Department of Defense, employee wellness director and chief exercise physiologist for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and eventually a three-year stint in Yokosuka, Japan, as health and wellness program manager for the U.S. Department of Defense.

“My time in Japan was awesome,” said Daniels. “It’s super clean and safe. The hardest part was the language barrier because Japan is 99.9% Japanese, but I had a great time.”

However after receiving news her grandmother was diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s and performing strenuous relief work during the devastating tsunami in 2011, Daniels was eager to return to the U.S. In 2013 Daniels transferred to Brunswick, Ga., to physically train law enforcement personnel at the federal law enforcement training center. Little did she know a recruiter viewing her online LinkedIn profile was itching to steal her away to Atlanta.

“The recruiter told me that Coca-Cola was working on revamping their wellness and well-being program and thought I would be a great candidate,” said Daniels. “After several interviews I decided it would be a great opportunity to work for the number one brand on the planet. Everyone knows Coca-Cola – it’s universal.”

Since accepting the position of well-being services manager in 2014, Daniels has successfully revamped the company’s wellness program including total renovation of the employee fitness center and onsite medical clinic, along with installing an onsite employee pharmacy.

“I enjoy watching people have the light go off in their own mind that they do have some control over how they feel emotionally, physically or just their health in general,” Daniels said. “It’s empowering people with information that they can change what’s going on presently, and just be better. Libby Lytle Cont. victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. She is the coordinator of the Interpersonal Violence Response Team (IVRT) for Lafayette, Panola, and Tunica Counties, and she sits on the Community Coordinated Response Team for both the University of Mississippi and Coahoma Community College. She is passionate about teaching current or future law enforcement professionals, and providing resources and support for victims of crime.

Lisa Paris Cont.

Lisa is a seventh generation Mississippian and their children are 5th generational Ole Miss Graduates. She is very pleased to be spending most of her time in Oxford since moving there in September.

Lisa has served the Mississippi Symphony as the Symphony Ball Chairman and Sub Deb Chair. During her 13 years as an Active in the Junior League of Jackson she served as Provisional Chair, Arts and Education Chair and on the Board for several years and currently is active as a sustainer in both a book and a cooking club that meet monthly. She has also served as chairman of the board and a board member for the Mustard Seed, a Christian Group home and activity center for mentally challenged adults.

She and Lee are active members at Christ Presbyterian Church of Oxford.

Artist Statement: I love to paint the beauty that surrounds us. There is a great sense of joy that comes from putting down fresh paint and knowing that perhaps someday, long from now, that same brushstroke will inspire joy to another generation. To capture the essence of the still life or a landscape is to capture the true beauty that will last forever. “I love painting and consider it a privilege to be a lens that images are viewed and captured. I truly don’t remember a day in my life with out art. It is the very essence of who I am.”

by Hilton, also in walking distance to the Oxford Conference Center. The property boasts 104 rooms and also service the Oxford Conference Center as well as the surrounding development.

As President of Charter Road Hospitality, Inc., Chan is best described as a hands-on operator. Chan observes the property facilities and operations daily. His role includes but is not limited to performing initial market studies, brand selection, procuring financing, construction, FF&E installation, employment selection, and the launch/stabilization of new property. He oversees 120 employees in all departments of the hotel and Charter Road Hospitality’s administrative office. Additionally, Chan oversees the financial health of the properties, the maintenance of the facilities, and coordinating renovations. As a hands-on operator, he is a dedicated to staying current on industry changes, brand standards, and revenue management.

Chan also serves on a number of advisory boards in the Oxford community, including, the OxfordLafayette County Economic Development Foundation Advisory Board, the University of Mississippi School of Hospitality Management Advisory Board, and the University of Mississippi Career Services Employer Advisory Board. He is also a member of the Oxford-Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, Lion’s Club of Oxford, Mississippi, Mississippi Lodging Association, and the Asian American Hotel Owners Association. Further, he served a term as a Member of the Oxford Tourism Council, a branch of the municipality.

He has seen first-hand how parks and recreation programs have implications in public health, quality of life, economic development and community safety, and hopes to pass on his passion and belief to others. He’s proud of the program’s ability to give students real-world experience in program development, leadership and civic engagement.
