Anand Panchal, DO Dedicated to Getting Injured Workers Back to Health and Back to Work By Lisa Lao Photography by Dorian Ash

When employers need a dedicated and compassionate orthopedic specialist to care for their injured workers, Dr. Anand P. Panchal is the name they trust. Known for his exceptional patient care, expertise in workers’ compensation, and outstanding outcomes, Dr. Panchal has become a go-to doctor for adjusters, case managers, and employers. His dedication to restoring injured workers to their preinjury health and helping them return to work has set him apart as a leader in his field.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 12

Dr. Panchal’s commitment to excellence has earned him widespread recognition, including being named to the Best Doctors in Workers’ Compensation for 2024. This acknowledgment underscores his skill, his proven outcomes, and his relentless dedication to ensuring the best possible care for his patients. Bloom Magazine had the privilege of sitting down with Dr. Panchal to learn more about his journey, his philosophy, and the qualities that make him a standout in the workers’ compensation field. Bloom Magazine: Tell us something most people don’t know about you. Dr. Panchal: I’m a very patriotic person. Every day, I feel fortunate to wake up in this beautiful country. It’s a privilege I never take for granted.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 13

Bloom Magazine: What inspires you to do your best every day? Dr. Panchal: As surgeons, we are entrusted with something deeply personal—the health and wellbeing of our patients. They come to us for answers they can’t find themselves, and that’s a responsibility I take very seriously. I treat every patient with the respect and care they deserve, making sure I give them my full attention and do everything I can to help them recover. Bloom Magazine: You’ve had extensive training. Can you tell us about your background? Dr. Panchal: I’m a board-certified, dual fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and surgery of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. I’ve had the privilege of caring for patients of all ages, from young athletes to adults with complex injuries.

My training started with a rigorous orthopedic surgery residency in Ohio. After that, I completed two fellowships—one at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, where I worked with athletes from high school to professional levels, including the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Nationals. My second fellowship was in upper extremity surgery at Triangle Orthopaedic Associates in North Carolina, where I learned advanced procedures for the shoulder, elbow, and wrist. Bloom Magazine: What are your main areas of expertise? Dr. Panchal: My focus includes shoulder arthroscopy and arthroplasty, complex shoulder and elbow trauma and reconstruction, ACL reconstruction, meniscal surgery, elbow arthroplasty and ligament reconstruction, and all sports-related injuries of the shoulder, elbow, and knee. Bloom Magazine: How do you balance the demands of your career with your personal life?

Dr. Panchal: My wife and I make it a priority to spend time together, especially outdoors. We love biking, hiking, playing tennis, and golfing. Exploring new restaurants is another way we connect and unwind. Having that balance helps me recharge and stay focused on providing the best care for my patients. Bloom Magazine: What’s the most challenging part of your job? Dr. Panchal: Balancing the physical and emotional needs of patients. Sometimes the physical injury doesn’t align with what they’re feeling emotionally, and addressing both can be challenging. But it’s also one of the most rewarding parts of what I do. Bloom Magazine: What’s your philosophy when treating injured workers? Dr. Panchal: My goal is simple: to get them back to their preinjury level of function and, ideally, back to work. I explore every treatment option, whether surgical or non-surgical, to achieve that. It’s about restoring their quality of life and helping them move forward. Bloom Magazine: If you could change one thing about the workers’ compensation industry, what would it be? Dr. Panchal: Reducing delays in treatment. Getting injured workers to the right doctor faster and starting their care sooner would make a world of difference for everyone involved.

Bloom Magazine: What do you consider your biggest professional accomplishment? Dr. Panchal: Being included on the Best Doctors in Workers’ Compensation for 2024 is a huge honor. It’s a reflection of the hard work my team and I put into ensuring our patients get the best possible outcomes. Beyond that, building a successful practice where I can focus on the types of surgeries I’m most passionate about has been incredibly fulfilling. Bloom Magazine: What makes your practice unique? Dr. Panchal: We’ve created a dedicated Workers’ Compensation department that ensures injured workers get the care they need without unnecessary delays. Our team is focused on clear and timely communication with all parties involved—employers, adjusters, case managers, and the patients themselves.

We pride ourselves on accommodating injuries quickly and providing the best care possible. Dr. Panchal: Communication and outcomes are everything. The better we communicate and the faster we can deliver results, the quicker we can help injured workers get back to their jobs and lives. I’m always available to speak with anyone involved in a case to make sure we’re aligned and working toward the same goal. Bloom Magazine: What’s the best way for employers, adjusters, and case managers to reach you? Dr. Panchal: They can contact our dedicated Workers’ Compensation team: Center for Bone & Joint Surgery A HOPCo Managed Company Email: Ernesto.Sierra@boneandjoint.org Phone: 561-803-8655 Fax: 561-204-2042 BLOOM MAGAZINE | 14

Dr. Panchal’s dedication to his patients, his extensive training, and his focus on achieving exceptional outcomes make him a leader in his field. His inclusion in the Best Doctors in Workers’ Compensation for 2024 underscores his skill and the trust he has earned from employers, case managers, and injured workers. With his expertise in sports medicine and complex orthopedic procedures, Dr. Panchal delivers results that go beyond expectations. Employers can confidently rely on him to help injured workers recover and return to their jobs, knowing they are in the care of one of the most accomplished orthopedic surgeons in southeast Florida.

KIMBERLY HUNTER Empowering Care in Workers' Compensation at Relation Insurance

In an exclusive interview with Bloom Magazine, we had the privilege of speaking with Kimberly Hunter, Medical Only Adjuster at Relation Insurance. With nearly two decades in the healthcare field, Kimberly has transitioned into the world of workers’ compensation, bringing her extensive experience and passion for helping others along with her. "I am a healthcare veteran of going on 19 years," Kimberly shares, noting her background includes an AA degree in Nursing and a BS degree in healthcare management. "I have had the pleasure of working in and with almost every aspect of healthcare." Recently, she departed from sleep medicine to embrace her new role as a Medical Only Adjuster at Relation Insurance, diving headfirst into this industry. Her fascination with workers' compensation began long before she took the plunge into this new career path. "I have always been intrigued by the work comp industry and all of its moving parts," she explains. After working closely with Relation Insurance over the years, an opportunity arose that she couldn’t pass up. Now, just two months into her role, she has already earned her all-lines insurance adjuster license. When asked what motivates her each day, Kimberly reflects on the importance of her work. "I am motivated by the ability I have to facilitate the care of our injured workers to get back to work better than ever," she says. "My team is absolutely amazing and has also been an instrumental part of my current position." A typical week for her starts with checking emails, managing tasks under tight deadlines, and collaborating with colleagues to ensure claimants receive the care they need. One aspect of her job that brings her immense satisfaction is the closure of cases. "Closing files is my favorite thing,"Kimberly confides. "When I close a file, I know that my claimant is back to work and doing what they enjoy." This sense of accomplishment drives her commitment to her role.

Looking ahead, Kimberly aspires to become a Field Case Manager, a role that aligns with her long-standing desire to work within the workers' compensation industry. "I have always wanted to work in healthcare, and throughout my career, I have always wanted to work within the work comp industry," she says.

Currently, Kimberly is also involved in broader initiatives, having recently joined the Culture Club to help with the upcoming STAW week for staff at Relation Insurance. "My approach to networking is being personable with people," she explains. "Being down to earth and understanding people is something I enjoy." Building professional yet genuine relationships is vital to her networking strategy. Kimberly looks up to Christina Rodriguez, her mentor at Relation, whose dedication and knowledge about workers’ compensation inspires her. "Her experience and dedication to her job is unmatched," Kimberly says. "To see her in action with her claimants, attorneys, and employers is extraordinary."

She believes that soft skills are crucial in her line of work, and appreciates the flexibility her hybrid job provides, allowing her to balance her professional and personal life. "This has allowed me to be more productive at home and at work," she notes.

Navigating her role as a younger female leader, Kimberly has faced challenges, especially during her tenure as a billing manager. "The team was apprehensive when I came into my previous role," she recounts. Through candid communication and relationship-building, she eased the transition into a cohesive team dynamic. "I learned long ago that in order for me to be a great leader, I have to lead and not manage," she emphasizes. Her philosophy extends to the empowerment of women in the workplace. "My motto is, 'Empowered women empower women,'" she states. "Women have to stick together no matter the obstacles as we are all in this together and fighting for the same things."

As she continues her journey in workers' compensation, Kimberly emphasizes the importance of clear communication, valuing feedback, and understanding the challenges faced by providers willing to take work comp patients. "From what I have been exposed to so far, I would say that we need to find out why most providers do not want to take work comp patients," she suggests.

Kimberly is also passionate about women’s rights, especially for the sake of her daughter and niece. "I have high hopes that they will know how truly amazing they both are to this world," she expresses. Outside of work, Kimberly enjoys eating, shopping, singing, and spending time with family, and she even tried out for American Idol at one point.

Kimberly Hunter’s story is one of dedication, empowerment, and a commitment to helping others. As she navigates the complexities of the workers' compensation field, her journey serves as a beacon of inspiration for those who share her passion for making a difference.

NICOLE GAINEY

Passion and Purpose in the Workers’ Compensation Arena In an exclusive interview with Bloom Magazine, we had the privilege of speaking with Nicole Gainey, Account Manager at Corvel. With a deeprooted connection to the workers’ compensation industry, Nicole shares her journey, insights, and the motivation that drives her every day. “I cut my teeth in the work comp industry,” Nicole explains. “My mom was a medical billing manager forever, and I started working in the mailroom at the Hartford at 16 years old.” This early exposure laid the foundation for her career, igniting a passion for the field that has flourished over the years. Nicole's enthusiasm for her work is palpable. “I am one of those crazy people that loves what I do, so it is never hard for me to come to work every day,” she shares. Her typical work week involves running reports for clients, participating in conference calls, and analyzing data to drive positive outcomes. “I love making positive impacts,” she emphasizes, “from as big as making a financial impact on a client's program to as small as making an impact on an injured worker's outcome.” Currently, Nicole is focusing on reviving an internal mentorship program designed to educate newer account managers at Corvel. “There used to be a program that I think we got too busy for, but I am trying to revive it,” she states. Her commitment to mentorship reflects her belief in the importance of networking. “My approach to networking is to absorb something from everyone I meet,” she explains. “Everyone has unique experiences and networks of their own that you never know if you will need someday.” Admiring the trailblazing women in her field, Nicole lists several female leaders who inspire her, including Gina Jacobs and Dr. Claire Musleman. “Anyone who has forged their own path, I admire,” she affirms. “Women empowering other women and lifting each other up is imperative. We sit at a lot of tables where we are the minority, and in order to change that, we have to support each other's efforts.” Though she initially had different aspirations, Nicole found her place in the industry. “I didn't want to work in this field when I was growing up, but once I got into it, I did not think about doing anything else,” she recalls. Her role as an Account Manager for the past two years allows her to flex important skills, including responsiveness, which she considers undervalued. Balancing work and home life is another aspect Nicole values highly. “My CEO says he believes in work-life integration, which I love,” she says. “I am always able to be where I need to be at the appropriate time, whether it's work or personal.” This flexibility contributes to her productivity and overall job satisfaction. A true advocate for helping others, Nicole states, “I don’t have specific causes that I like. I just like to help people in any way I can with no expectations.” This compassionate outlook extends to her family life, where she finds happiness when surrounded by loved ones. “I am happiest when I am with my family, and I have nowhere I need to be,” she reveals.

Reflecting on her journey, Nicole is proud of being invited to speak on multiple panels at industry events like WCI. “I am proud of being asked to speak on multiple panels,” she says. Her adventurous spirit is evident as well; she has ziplined through a forest in the Dominican Republic, and she dreams of traveling the world with her loved ones. When asked about the best career advice she has received, Nicole shares a simple yet powerful mantra: “Never burn a bridge!” Her approach to challenges is steady and measured. “I am very even-keeled,” she states. “It takes a whole lot to get me out of my character or stressed.” As Nicole continues to thrive in the workers' compensation field, she embraces her role as a leader and mentor, empowering others along the way. “That’s what makes me smile the most: watching my daughters grow up,” she concludes, highlighting the joy of nurturing future generations while forging her path in a dynamic industry.

ALEXUS CROKER Championing Community and Compassion in Workers’ Compensation In an exclusive interview with Bloom Magazine, we had the privilege of speaking with Alexus Croker, Adjuster at Lowe’s. With a wealth of experience and a dedication to her community, Alexus shares her journey, insights, and the motivations that inspire her every day. “I strive to uplift those around me and be someone my kids can look up to,” Alexus emphasizes, highlighting her commitment to being a role model for her children. Her extensive credentials as a licensed All-Line Adjuster, Life and Health Insurance Agent, and Notary reflect her diverse skill set, alongside her entrepreneurial spirit as the owner of two businesses. Alexus’s path into the workers’ compensation industry began organically. “My current job has a Workers' Comp Program, and I felt that my skills and experience would make me a great fit. I’ve been in the medical field since high school, starting with a CNA program, which has given me comprehensive knowledge of insurance from every perspective,” she explains. This background fuels her passion for the work she does. “What motivates me to come to work each day is the desire to give back and be more,” she shares. “My children are my reason for pushing forward, and my clients depend on me for guidance, which adds a sense of responsibility to my role.” A typical week for Alexus involves meticulously organizing her day, managing emails, letters, and phone calls, and ensuring effective communication. “Flexibility is key,” she notes, “as I often need to pivot my schedule to address urgent matters.” Having spent a year in this field, she feels fulfilled, believing she has finally found her calling. Her favorite aspect of her job is making a difference in her community. “Helping my clients access the best care and benefits as quickly as possible is crucial, especially in today’s economy where every penny counts,” she emphasizes. Networking is another vital part of her professional life. “I attend various events and serve on the policy council for my children’s school, which has allowed me to meet influential figures committed to improving our community,” she explains. While she acknowledges the challenges of being a woman in leadership, she emphasizes the importance of empowering one another. “Women supporting each other is critical, especially in fields where we are often the minority,” she says. Though she initially had aspirations to work as a childcare case worker helping abused children, Alexus has found fulfillment in her current path. “I didn't initially plan to work in this field, but now that I’m here, I can’t imagine doing anything else,” she reflects. Key skills that she relies on daily include communication, scheduling, and active listening. Balancing her work and home life is paramount. “I do not take my work home; when I’m off the clock, I focus on being a mom,” she states. When discussing causes she supports, Alexus highlights health insurance access, children’s welfare, and homelessness reform. Influential books, such as Steve Harvey’s “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man” and Charlamagne Tha God’s “Black Privilege,” have shaped her outlook.

The happiest moments of her life revolve around the births of her two sons, who inspire her daily. “They are my motivation,” she shares. A top productivity hack for Alexus is planning ahead; she utilizes multiple calendars and believes in the power of writing things down to stay organized. Since entering her career, Alexus has seen significant changes, particularly the shift toward virtual investigations, which enhance the need for active listening. “We must remember that our clients are real people relying on our services,” she asserts. Many may not know that she owns two businesses: Pocahontas Designs, creating custom party items, and Ask-C-Consults, where she provides assistance with benefit investigations and insurance needs. Proud of her leadership role, Alexus emphasizes creating a welcoming environment where her colleagues feel comfortable seeking knowledge and support. As a dedicated mother, she strives to balance her work and family life, participating actively in her sons' activities and school organizations. An adventurous spirit shines through as she recounts a hot air balloon ride as a significant life experience, alongside her dream of traveling the world with her loved ones. As she continues to thrive in the workers' compensation field, Alexus embraces her role as a mentor and leader, determined to uplift those around her while forging her path in a dynamic industry. “What makes me smile the most is watching my children grow up,” she concludes, highlighting the joy of nurturing future generations while making a meaningful impact in her community.

Reflecting on her happiest moments, she notes, “I was happiest when I got married and had children.” Walking and exercising daily serve as her favorite productivity hack, helping her stay focused and manage stress.

Having built her career over the years, Michelle recognizes the importance of networking. “I engage with both traditional methods and social media,” she explains, valuing personal connections while adapting to modern communication.

Over her years in the industry, Michelle has seen significant changes, particularly in technology. “When I started, we relied heavily on paper and dictation. Now, we can accomplish so much more with email and digital tools,” she explains. However, she acknowledges the challenges small businesses face in competing with larger corporations.

As a woman leader in her field, Michelle faces unique challenges, particularly in engaging her team. “You never know what each day will bring,” she reflects. She believes that being a woman can add a caring element to her leadership style, although it sometimes leads to being perceived as intimidating when she asserts herself. Empowering other women is important to Michelle. “We need to support each other and encourage one another through obstacles,” she asserts. Her commitment to communication, collaboration, and integrity remains the cornerstone of her approach, as she recognizes that clear communication is vital to success. Finding balance is a challenge for Michelle, but she strives for a structured schedule. “I try to take at least one day a week off to disconnect completely from work,” she shares. Advocacy for Autism Awareness and support for neurodiverse individuals are causes she deeply cares about.

Proud to have been in business for over 22 years, Michelle continues to prioritize ongoing education and professional development. Her adventurous spirit shines through in her love for snorkeling in Hawaii, and she dreams of traveling the world on a yacht with her family to experience diverse cultures and cuisines. The best career advice she’s received? “Don’t give up! Don’t let a bad yesterday ruin today.” Compassionate, driven, and ethical, Michelle embodies the spirit of leadership and is committed to making a positive impact in the workers' compensation field. “Remember, at the end of the day, you’re dealing with people. This can be one of the most rewarding and challengingcareers you have,” she concludes, highlighting the importance of empathy in the industry.

JONICA NAJARIAN Navigating Success and Empowerment in Workers’ Compensation In an exclusive interview with Bloom Magazine, we had the privilege of speaking with Jonica Najarian, a dedicated legal adjuster at Davies Group LLC, where she has been for nearly three years. With eight years in the workers' compensation industry, Jonica is committed to handling school board claims while pursuing a master's degree to further her education. Jonica’s entry into the workers' compensation field is a story of serendipity. “I completed my bachelor's degree and was applying for corporate positions when a recruiter reached out,” she recalls. “They recognized my insurance background and suggested it would be a great segue into this career. I haven't looked back since.” Family serves as Jonica's primary motivation. “I am always striving for new goals, but nothing inspires me to succeed more than my kids,” she says. Her workweek varies significantly; it can be filled with meetings and mediations or quieter, allowing her to catch up on desk work. One of Jonica's favorite aspects of her job is making a tangible difference in the claims process for clients. “I love the ongoing changes that keep my work dynamic and allow me to keep learning,” she explains. While she is currently focused on broadening her education, Jonica emphasizes the importance of networking in her industry. “Meeting with other professionals has provided me with valuable perspectives and has helped me set future goals,” she shares. Among those she admires in the field is Maggie Conatser, whom Jonica describes as the epitome of being “well-rounded.” “She is intelligent, wellversed in the industry, and respected by many,” Jonica notes, expressing her appreciation for Maggie's influence. Jonica believes in the importance of women supporting one another in their careers. “It’s vital to uplift each other rather than compete,” she asserts. Even in her current role, she makes it a point to highlight the achievements of other women, striving to create a supportive environment. While Jonica did not initially aspire to be in workers' compensation, she now feels grateful to be in the field. “I find that people skills, organization, and a willingness to learn are essential for my role,” she explains, recognizing the need for adaptability as laws and practices evolve. She appreciates the work-life balance that her current company fosters. “I organize my day to ensure I can disconnect and be present for my family,” she says. Jonica is currently invested in helping her community recover from the devastation of Hurricane Helene, showcasing her commitment to making a positive impact beyond her professional life. One book that has left a significant impression on her is “The Women” by Kristin Hannah, which she completed earlier this year. “It evoked so many emotions; I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates historical fiction,” she adds. Reflecting on her happiness, Jonica declares, “I am the happiest I’ve ever been right now, with a wonderful family and a career with clear goals.” For productivity, Jonica emphasizes the importance of taking breaks. “Burnout is real, especially in this industry,” she warns, encouraging others to prioritize their well-being. She has observed significant changes in the industry, particularly regarding the growth opportunities for employees, thanks to increased investment from companies.

As the industry faces the challenge of retiring talent, Jonica notes the importance of attracting new talent. “We need to recruit individuals unfamiliar with the field, as workers' compensation offers abundant possibilities for growth,” she emphasizes. Recently nominated for a BLOOM award in excellence, Jonica sees this recognition as her greatest accomplishment to date. “It’s a proud moment to have my hard work acknowledged,” she says. Although she considers herself risk-averse, she views returning to the U.S. alone for college as an adventurous step. In her personal life, Jonica finds inspiration from her children, who keep her motivated. “I am competitive in all aspects of life, which fuels my ambition,” she admits. Her hobbies include outdoor activities like running and biking, reflecting her active lifestyle. As she looks to the future, Jonica hopes to run her own business, despite the fears that accompany such a leap. “I value common sense over intelligence,” she asserts, understanding the unique qualities each individual brings. Ultimately, she encourages her peers in the workers' compensation field to strive for more and support each other. “A little support goes a long way,” she concludes, highlighting the power of community in professional success.

LATICIA RICHTER Bridging Care and Advocacy in Workers' Compensation

In an exclusive interview with Bloom Magazine, we had the privilege of speaking with Laticia Richter, a Workers' Compensation Specialist II in the Subrogation Unit at PGCS Claim Services. As both a Workers’ Compensation (WC) Adjuster and a Subrogation Adjuster, Laticia brings a unique dual perspective to her work, supporting injured workers while advocating for her clients’ recoveries. Hailing from California, Laticia is a dedicated mother of three adult children and a grandmother to seven. She balances her professional life with family, DIY projects, and her love for attending sporting events. At home, she shares her life with two adorable pugs, Reggie and Roscoe, who bring her daily joy. Laticia’s journey into the workers' compensation industry began unexpectedly in April 2000, when she took a temporary job with a WC carrier in Central Florida. Initially intended to last just two weeks, that role turned into a 17-year career, during which she earned her All-Lines Adjuster license, solidifying her commitment to the field. Her typical work week now involves a series of critical tasks, from acknowledging injury notices and coordinating with case management to asserting third-party liens and securing recoveries in subrogation. It’s a career that aligns with her passion for helping others, providing a sense of fulfillment in knowing she can make a difference for injured workers and her clients alike. Raised by a family of empowering women, Laticia’s mother, Pearl, and grandmother, Oree, instilled in her the strength, courage, and confidence to take risks. Their unconditional love provided her a solid foundation, and she carries forward their influence in her own life by uplifting and empowering other women. "Recognizing each other's strengths fosters growth and confidence," she says, underscoring her belief in the power of supportive relationships. Alongside her professional achievements, Laticia values her spiritual life and finds joy in attending church and church events, especially Gospel Fests, which bring her a sense of community and peace. This balance, along with her commitment to mental well-being, is crucial to her, especially now that she is an empty nester. Her focus on maintaining a healthy work-life balance is evident in the supportive environment she fosters for herself and her colleagues. Reflecting on her most cherished memories, she recalls the bittersweet moment her brother was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams when she was just 16.

Laticia also fondly remembers her Alaskan cruise—her greatest adventure despite her dislike for cold weather. Traveling the world and experiencing diverse cultures remains her dream, and she hopes to someday make that a reality. Her career has been a journey of growth and learning, with the best advice she's received being to remain open to opportunities and embrace constructive criticism. She emphasizes the value of common sense alongside intelligence, a combination she considers essential for informed decision-making in her field. Looking toward the future of workers' compensation, Laticia advocates for faster recovery processes, improved communication for injured workers, and enhanced resources to support individuals with learning disabilities or language barriers. She encourages colleagues to establish a streamlined approach for obtaining work statuses and care plans for injured workers, highlighting the importance of clear communication in the field. For Laticia, her grandchildren bring her the greatest joy, and a pastel pink scarf has become her favorite piece of clothing.

SUNJI SALAZAR

Building Strong Physician Partnerships at Surgery Partners Bloom Magazine loves to shine the spotlight on people in our industry who go above and beyond. In this People to Know feature, we’re highlighting Sunji Salazar, a seasoned Physician Relationship Manager at Surgery Partners, whose work behind the scenes is making a real impact in healthcare. With more than two decades of experience, she has built a career around strengthening connections between surgeons, surgical centers, and healthcare providers, ensuring that the system runs as smoothly as possible for both doctors and patients. Sunji’s role is all about relationships. She helps surgeons expand their referral networks, optimizes surgical scheduling, and makes sure operating rooms are being used efficiently. But for her, it’s never just about logistics. It’s about making sure patients get the care they need without unnecessary delays. “I always remind myself that every connection I help build and every process I improve leads back to a patient,” she shares. “If a surgeon is struggling to get OR time or a practice doesn’t have a strong referral network, that’s affecting real people. My job is to remove those barriers so that everything moves forward.” Her journey into healthcare wasn’t something she planned, but once she got involved in business development, workers’ compensation coordination, and medical marketing, she realized just how much of a difference she could make. Over the years, she has worked with ambulatory surgical centers, medical equipment providers, orthopedic practices, and insurance companies, gaining a deep understanding of the industry from multiple perspectives. That knowledge has been invaluable in her current role, where she ensures that healthcare providers and facilities work together seamlessly. “I’ve always believed that strong relationships are the key to a better healthcare system,” Sunji says. “When doctors, case managers, and insurers are all on the same page, everything runs smoother, and patients get the care they need without delays.” That ability to bring people together has made her a respected leader in her field, and she takes pride in the impact she has on making healthcare operations more efficient and effective.

Outside of work, Sunji is just as dedicated to creating balance in her life. A soccer mom, an avid reader, and someone who loves dancing, exercising, meditating, and spending time at the beach, she believes that taking care of herself is just as important as taking care of others. “I love what I do, but I also make sure to recharge so I can keep showing up for the people who count on me,” she says. As healthcare continues to evolve, Sunji remains committed to helping providers adapt, strengthening connections, and improving the way surgical centers operate. For her, it all comes down to ensuring that the right people are connected and that the system works better for everyone involved. “At the end of the day, it’s all about making things easier for the doctors so they can focus on their patients,” she says. “If I can help make that happen, then I know I’m doing something meaningful.” With her experience, passion, and dedication, Sunji Salazar is exactly the kind of person who keeps healthcare moving forward. DID YOU KNOW? OM doctors can tour your facilities and make recommendations for a safer office environment? OM doctors specialize in the prevention and treatment of work-related injuries and illnesses. They have the expertise to identify potential hazards in the workplace and suggest ways to mitigate those risks. One way that OM doctors can help improve the safety of your office is by conducting a tour of your facilities. During the tour, they will assess the layout of the workplace, the equipment being used, and the overall working conditions. They will look for any potential hazards that could cause accidents or injuries, such as tripping hazards, electrical issues, or exposure to hazardous substances. Based on their observations, OM doctors can then make recommendations for improving the safety of the workplace. These recommendations might include installing safety guards on machinery, improving lighting and ventilation, or providing protective equipment for employees. In addition to conducting tours, OM doctors can also arrange for on-site employee seminars. These seminars can cover a variety of topics, such as ergonomics, workplace safety, and healthy living. By educating employees on how to stay safe and healthy on the job, you can help reduce the risk of accidents and injuries in the workplace.

We asked the industry leaders and physicians what their Workers' Compensation philosophy is, and here's what they had to say.

MY WORKERS' COMPENSATION PHILOSOPHY BLOOM MAGAZINE | 30

Michelle Repman-Pifer President/CEO, Presque Isle Rehabilitation Service, LLC My workers' compensation philosophy is do everything you do with integrity and compassion. Though what we all do for a profession can be challenging and difficult, at the end of the day you have the opportunity to make a positive impact on someone's life when they most need it.

Laticia Richter WC Specialist/Subrogation Unit, PGCS Claim Services My workers' compensation philosophy is, establish a professional and honest business relationship with your insured at the first point of contact. This makes the process goes smoother. Be attentive to the injured worker and make sure they understand that you will be there throughout the whole process.

Lisa Shoaff Supervisor, CCMSI My workers' compensation philosophy is rooted in the many roles we fulfill as adjusters. We serve as guides for injured workers during their time of need, helping them navigate the medical process and providing wage loss support when necessary. At the same time, we support employers, especially when workers' compensation isn't their primary focus. Equally important is prioritizing our own well-being—making time for family, caring for ourselves, and finding a unique balance between supporting our claimants and maintaining our personal health and happiness.

Bria Taylor WC Risk Manager, Hyatt Hotels Corporation My workers compensation philosophy is similar to the Hyatt philosophy of " Care for people so they can be their best". Throughout my professional career and early aspirations of becoming a nurse, I learned how much influence having compassion for others can drive positive results. This philosophy promotes a supportive mindset when collaborating with others and strengthens the ability to effectively venture through difficult situations. Expressing a sense of care enables you to dig deeper into the "Why" behind one's intention and promotes diversity when determining alternate resolutions. This philosophy creates a great sense of consideration in the well-being of others as well as oneself. I practice this philosophy in my personal, social and professional life.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 31

Traci Krewson Risk Manager, City of Altamonte Springs My workers' compensation philosophy is centered on fairness, efficiency, and care. I am committed to creating a supportive process that ensures injured employees receive timely and appropriate care while balancing the city's fiscal responsibilities. By fostering open communication, collaborating with all stakeholders, and prioritizing safety and prevention, I aim to minimize risks, expedite recovery, and help employees return to work as quickly and safely as possible. It’s about striking the right balance between compassion for individuals and safeguarding the organization’s resources.

Brook Washington Claims Examiner, Sedgwick My workers' compensation philosophy is to approach each case with an open mind, balancing healthy skepticism with empathy. While it’s important to remain vigilant and consider all possibilities, I believe in giving individuals the benefit of the doubt and treating them with fairness and respect. This mindset fosters trust, encourages open communication, and helps ensure that decisions are based on facts rather than assumptions.

Frances Clinton Nurse Case Manager, Performance Driven Case Management My workers' compensation philosophy is to simplify and streamline the system so it is easily understood by everyone involved. By breaking down complex processes and communicating clearly, I aim to empower injured workers, employers, and stakeholders with the knowledge they need to navigate the system confidently and effectively.

DOCTOR SPOTLIGHT BLOOM MAGAZINE | 33

JOEL PETERSON, MD Helping Injured Workers Regain Strength and Mobility Bloom Magazine: Communication is key in workers’ compensation cases. How do you ensure clear communication with patients, employers, and case managers? Dr. Peterson: I believe in a team-based approach to care. I maintain open communication with all parties involved, ensuring that employers, adjusters, and case managers have a clear understanding of the patient’s progress, work restrictions, and expected recovery timeline. I also take the time to educate my patients about their condition, treatment plan, and rehabilitation process. When everyone is on the same page, we can work together to achieve the best possible outcome. Bloom Magazine: Are there any new surgical techniques or technologies you’ve recently incorporated into your practice to improve care for injured workers? Dr. Peterson: Yes, advancements in minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery have been a game changer. These techniques allow for smaller incisions, less tissue damage, and faster recovery times, which is particularly beneficial for injured workers looking to return to their jobs as quickly as possible. Additionally, for patients with severe shoulder arthritis, I specialize in joint replacement surgery, including reverse total shoulder arthroplasty, which can significantly improve function and reduce pain. With computer modeling, I can now virtually plan every shoulder replacement I perform ahead of time to ensure perfect placement of the components. I also utilize tendon transfers and other reconstructive techniques for complex injuries, helping patients regain mobility even in challenging cases. Bloom Magazine: Dr. Peterson, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. Can you start by sharing a bit about your background and what led you to specialize in shoulder and elbow surgery?

Bloom Magazine: If you could change one thing about the workers' compensation system, what would it be?

Dr. Peterson: Absolutely. My journey into orthopedic surgery was shaped by a deep interest in human movement and rehabilitation. I first studied Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Neuroscience at Princeton University before earning a Master’s degree in Conservation Biology from Columbia University. I then attended medical school at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where I was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. From there, I completed my residency in orthopedic surgery at Columbia University and New YorkPresbyterian Hospital, home to the oldest and most prestigious shoulder service in the country. During my training, I had the privilege of learning from world-renowned leaders in shoulder and elbow surgery, including former presidents of the American Shoulder & Elbow Society - Dr. William Levine and Dr. David Dines. To further refine my expertise, I completed a fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery, where I specialized in complex procedures to restore function in the shoulder and elbow.

Dr. Peterson: One of the biggest challenges is the delay in accessing necessary care. Workers’ compensation cases often involve administrative hurdles that slow down the approval process for diagnostic tests, physical therapy, or surgery. Faster decision-making and streamlined communication between healthcare providers and insurers would improve patient outcomes and help injured workers get back to their jobs more efficiently.

Bloom Magazine: That’s an impressive background. What types of injuries and conditions do you most commonly treat? Dr. Peterson: My practice focuses on diagnosing and treating injuries and conditions affecting the shoulder and elbow. This includes rotator cuff tears, labral injuries, shoulder instability, arthritis, tendon ruptures, and fractures. Many of my patients come in with work-related injuries, such as rotator cuff damage from repetitive strain or shoulder instability due to acute trauma. My goal is to restore strength and mobility while minimizing downtime. Bloom Magazine: Speaking of work-related injuries, what is your approach when treating injured workers? Dr. Peterson: I take a comprehensive approach that prioritizes both effective treatment and a safe return to work. The first step is an accurate diagnosis, followed by exploring all non-surgical options such as physical therapy and conservative management. If surgery is necessary, I use advanced open and arthroscopic techniques to maximize recovery while minimizing healing time. It’s also important to recognize that no two jobs are the same. I work closely with employers and case managers to understand the specific physical demands of the patient’s job and develop a tailored treatment plan that allows for a safe and efficient return to work.

Bloom Magazine: What advice do you have for adjusters, employers, and case managers looking to facilitate the best outcomes for injured workers? Dr. Peterson: The best outcomes happen when there is a strong partnership between the medical team, the employer, and the case manager. Early intervention is key, delaying treatment can lead to prolonged recovery times and a higher risk of complications. Additionally, creating modified duty options for injured workers can help them transition back into the workplace safely without putting them at risk for re-injury. Bloom Magazine: Dr. Peterson, thank you for sharing your insights. It’s clear that your expertise and commitment to patient care are making a real difference for injured workers. Dr. Peterson: Thank you. It’s an honor to help patients regain mobility and return to their daily lives, including their jobs. I appreciate the opportunity to discuss how we can continue improving care for injured workers. Adjusters, employers, and case managers seeking to schedule an appointment with Dr. Peterson can contact the dedicated Workers' Compensation team at: Elvia Reyes - Point of Contact Email: ereyes@drbadia.com Main Office Phone: (305) 227-4263 Workers’ Compensation Email: ereyes@drbadia.com Address: 3650 NW 82nd Ave, Suite 103, Miami, FL 33166

Some of the procedures I do most often include rotator cuff repair, ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, and joint replacements. I also specialize in cartilage restoration and patellar stabilization, which can be really important for workers who need to stay active on the job. Bloom Magazine: You’re a Florida native. What does it mean to you to be able to serve your local workforce? Dr. Widner: It means a lot. I was born in Jacksonville and grew up playing sports, so I know firsthand what it’s like to deal with injuries. Now, as a surgeon, I’m grateful to be able to help the people in my community heal and get back to work. Whether it’s a construction worker, a first responder, or someone in manufacturing, I want them to feel confident that they’re getting the best care possible. ALEXANDER LAMPLEY, MD Restoring Function and Quality of Life for Injured Workers Bloom Magazine: When treating work-related injuries, what is your approach to ensuring patients can return to their jobs safely and efficiently? Dr. Lampley: My approach is patient-centered, aiming to restore individuals to their pre-injury functional levels as promptly and safely as possible. For work-related injuries, I emphasize early and accurate diagnosis, followed by a tailored treatment plan that may include physical therapy, medication, or surgical intervention when necessary. Collaboration is key—I work closely with employers, case managers, and rehabilitation specialists to facilitate a smooth transition back to work, ensuring any necessary accommodations or modifications are in place to prevent reinjury. Bloom Magazine: Communication seems vital in this process. How do you ensure clear communication with all parties involved? Dr. Lampley: Effective communication is indeed crucial. I make it a priority to keep open lines of communication with patients, their families, employers, and the broader care team. This involves clearly explaining the diagnosis, treatment options, and expected recovery timelines to the patient. I also provide regular updates to employers and case managers, ensuring everyone is aligned on the patient's progress and any workrelated considerations. Bloom Magazine: Are there any advancements in orthopedic care that you've recently incorporated into your practice to benefit injured workers? Dr. Lampley: Yes, advancements in minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as endoscopic carpal tunnel release and arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, have significantly reduced recovery times and postoperative discomfort. Additionally, the use of 3D imaging for surgical planning has enhanced precision in complex reconstructions. These innovations allow for more efficient rehabilitation, enabling injured workers to return to their duties more swiftly. Bloom Magazine: Dr. Lampley, thank you for joining us today. Could you share some insights into your background and what led you to specialize in orthopedic surgery, particularly focusing on the upper extremities? Dr. Lampley: It's a pleasure to be here. My journey into orthopedic surgery began during my undergraduate studies at Bucknell University, where I developed a keen interest in human anatomy and biomechanics. This passion led me to Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, where I earned my medical degree with honors. My residency at Duke University Medical Center provided comprehensive training in orthopedic surgery, and I further specialized by completing a Hand and Upper Extremity fellowship at the Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center. This path solidified my focus on treating conditions affecting the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. Bloom Magazine: That's an impressive background. Can you elaborate on your areas of expertise and the types of procedures you commonly perform? Dr. Lampley: Certainly. I specialize in diagnosing and treating both adult and pediatric disorders of the upper extremities. This includes managing conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff injuries, tennis elbow, and various forms of arthritis. I perform a range of surgical procedures, from minimally invasive arthroscopic surgeries to complex microvascular reconstructions. Additionally, I have a particular interest in sports-related injuries and peripheral nerve conditions, utilizing techniques like nerve and tendon transfers to restore function.

Bloom Magazine: Reflecting on the workers' compensation system, is there an aspect you believe could be improved to enhance patient care? Dr. Lampley: Streamlining the authorization process for treatments would be a significant improvement. Delays in obtaining approvals can postpone necessary interventions, potentially prolonging recovery and increasing the risk of complications. A more efficient system would facilitate timely care, ultimately benefiting both the patient and their employer by reducing downtime. Bloom Magazine: For adjusters, employers, or nurses who need to consult with you regarding an injured worker, what is the best way to reach you? Dr. Lampley: We have a dedicated team to assist in care coordination for all our providers. You can reach the team directly at workcomp@seortho.com or by calling 904-394-2494. Dr. Lampley is committed to providing comprehensive, patientcentered care to help injured workers return to optimal health and productivity. Focus Brain Therapy Bloom Magazine: Dr. Lago, how does your role complement the program?

LOURDES R. LAGO GONZALEZ, MD Board Certified Neurologist

Dr. Lago: My role is to bring neurological expertise to the team. I help address specific conditions like traumatic brain injuries, dizziness, migraines, and other neurological challenges that injured workers may face. I work closely with patients to develop treatment plans, provide ongoing care, and ensure they are supported every step of the way. I also collaborate with employers and adjusters to keep the process as smooth and efficient as possible. Bloom Magazine: Dr. Huseboe, what inspired you to create Focus Brain Therapy? Dr. Huseboe: I’ve always been fascinated by the brain’s ability to heal and adapt. I wanted to create a place where we could use innovative methods to unlock that potential and help people recover faster. The Cognitive Circuit Training® program came from my desire to combine science and care in a way that addresses the whole person— physically, cognitively, and emotionally. When my son was little, he struggled with pronouncing certain letter sounds. A speech pathologist diagnosed him with auditory processing disorder and recommended therapy based on neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to adapt and heal. I had never heard of neuroplasticity before, but it fascinated me. At the time, many believed the brain only got weaker with age, but this showed that it could grow and improve. Seeing how much it helped my son inspired me to dedicate my life to understanding it and creating a program to help others, especially those with brain injuries. Bloom Magazine: How does the program benefit employers and injured workers?

DR. LISA HUSEBOE CEO & Founder

Dr. Huseboe: For injured workers, it provides a path to recovery that is comprehensive and tailored to their needs. It helps them rebuild their skills, regain confidence, and return to work more quickly and safely. For employers, it minimizes downtime and ensures their employees receive the best possible care. The program’s holistic approach helps everyone involved feel supported and confident in the recovery process.

In this edition of Bloom Magazine, we sat down with Dr. Lourdes R. Lago and Dr. Lisa Huseboe to learn more about Focus Brain Therapy, their innovative program, and how they are making a difference in brain health while helping injured workers recover and return to work. Through their commitment to personalized care and groundbreaking treatments, they are changing the way recovery is approached.

Bloom Magazine: Dr. Lago, what do you find most rewarding about your work?

Bloom Magazine: Dr. Lago, welcome to Focus Brain Therapy! What inspired you to join the team?

Dr. Huseboe: We’re focused on expanding our reach and continuing to refine our programs to help even more injured workers. Our goal is to keep improving the recovery process and making it easier and more effective for those who need it most.

Dr. Lago: Thank you! Joining Focus Brain Therapy felt like the right next step in my career. I’ve always been passionate about helping patients recover from neurological conditions, and the clinic’s mission aligns perfectly with my goals. Here, I get to work directly with injured workers, helping them regain their health and safely return to their jobs.

Dr. Lago: The most rewarding part is seeing my patients make progress and knowing that I’ve helped them regain their health and independence. Watching someone recover and return to their life and work with confidence is incredibly fulfilling. Bloom Magazine: What’s next for Focus Brain Therapy?

Dr. Lago and Dr. Huseboe are revolutionizing brain health and recovery, helping injured workers return to their lives and jobs. Their innovative care, including Cognitive Circuit Training®, sets a new standard for rehabilitation. Employers interested in learning more or touring Focus Brain Therapy can contact Ozzy Diaz at ozzydiaz@ommktg.com to arrange a visit or in-service.

Bloom Magazine: Dr. Huseboe, as the founder of Focus Brain Therapy, can you share more about the Cognitive Circuit Training® program? Dr. Huseboe: Absolutely. The Cognitive Circuit Training® program is the core of what we do. It’s a 90-minute session-based program designed to help the brain heal and adapt, a process known as neuroplasticity. It incorporates sensory integration, cognitive skills training, balance exercises, and emotional regulation techniques. The program is tailored to each person’s needs, and it’s especially effective for injured workers who need a comprehensive approach to recovery. It focuses on both the physical and mental aspects of healing, helping patients get back to their normal lives and jobs.

INSIDE OM Media DORIAN ASH

Dorian Ash: Video allows doctors to demonstrate exactly how they approach treatment, recovery, and patient care. Employers and case managers need reassurance that they’re referring employees to the right professional, and video provides that transparency. Whether it’s explaining a procedure, discussing treatment outcomes, or highlighting expertise in workers’ compensation cases, video gives decision-makers the confidence they need to make referrals.

Media Director

Bloom Magazine: What common mistakes should doctors avoid in video marketing?

In today’s digital world, video marketing has become an indispensable tool for doctors looking to engage with both patients and employers. Dorian Ash, Media Director at OM, is an expert in physician video production, helping doctors create compelling content that builds trust and expands their reach. “Video isn’t just for patients—it’s also a key way for doctors to connect with employers, adjusters, and case managers,” says Dorian.

Dorian Ash: The biggest mistake is poor audio quality—if people can’t hear you clearly, they won’t engage with the content. Investing in a good microphone makes a huge difference. Bad lighting is another common issue; a well-lit video looks professional and inviting. Long videos can also lose viewer interest quickly —keeping content concise ensures people stay engaged. Finally, not having a distribution strategy is a missed opportunity. A great video is only effective if it reaches the right audience, so doctors should be sharing content on their website, social media, and relevant business platforms.

With years of experience in video marketing, Dorian has helped physicians showcase their expertise and communicate their approach to care in a way that resonates with a broad audience. In our conversation, he shared insights into why video marketing is essential for doctors, the types of videos that are most effective, and how OM supports medical professionals in leveraging video to grow their practice.

Bloom Magazine: How does OM help doctors avoid these pitfalls and create professional videos?

Bloom Magazine: Dorian, why should doctors use video marketing to connect with both patients and employers? Dorian Ash: Video marketing is one of the most effective ways for doctors to establish credibility. It allows them to build trust with patients before they even step into the office while also providing employers with a clear understanding of their approach to care. Employers, adjusters, and case managers want to know who they’re referring workers to, and a well-crafted video helps bridge that gap by making a doctor’s philosophy and expertise accessible in a way that text alone can’t. Bloom Magazine: What types of videos should doctors focus on creating? Dorian Ash: The most impactful videos fall into three main categories. Physician Introduction Videos allow doctors to present their personality and philosophy in a way that feels personal and authentic. Educational Videos provide valuable information about common conditions and treatments, positioning doctors as trusted experts while helping both patients and employers better understand their services. Patient Testimonials offer social proof by highlighting real success stories, reinforcing a doctor’s reputation for effective care. Additional content, like FAQ videos, practice tours, and video ads, can further extend a doctor’s reach and engagement. Bloom Magazine: How does video help doctors build trust with employers and showcase their expertise?

Dorian Ash: At OM, we handle everything from video production to editing and distribution, ensuring that every video is high-quality and reaches the right audience. We take the guesswork out of the process, allowing doctors to focus on patient care while we make sure their message is seen and heard by both patients and employers. Bloom Magazine: For doctors who are just getting started with video marketing, where’s the best place to begin? Dorian Ash: An introductory video is the perfect starting point because it establishes trust and gives potential patients and employers an immediate sense of who you are. From there, creating educational videos on common conditions and treatments helps reinforce expertise. Once the content is created, the next step is ensuring proper distribution—getting the videos on your website, social media, and even running paid ads to increase visibility. Bloom Magazine: How often should doctors update their video content? Dorian Ash: Educational videos can remain relevant for years, but for video ads or campaign-based content, refreshing videos every 90 days keeps engagement high and messaging up to date. Consistency is key, and having a strategy for ongoing content creation helps maintain an active presence. Bloom Magazine: Any final advice for doctors thinking about video marketing? Dorian Ash: Just get started! You don’t need a huge budget—what matters most is authenticity and clarity. Video is a powerful way to build trust, educate patients, and connect with employers. If you’re unsure where to begin, OM is here to help. Reach out to info@ommktg.com to start creating content that makes an impact. OM specializes in producing high-quality video content tailored for physicians, helping them grow their practices and effectively connect with both patients and employers.

THE POWER OF SELF-AWARENESS: A KEY TO PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS BY DR. CLAIRE MUSELMAN Self-awareness is often considered the cornerstone of emotional intelligence and personal development. It is the foundation upon which we build our understanding of ourselves, enabling us to navigate the complexities of our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. This article will explore the importance of self-awareness, why we should care about it, what it means, how to build it, and its significant impact on our lives. If not now, when? What is Self-Awareness? Self-awareness is recognizing and understanding our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. It involves deeply understanding our strengths and weaknesses, values and motivations, and how these elements influence our actions and interactions. Self-awareness is not a static trait but a dynamic and ongoing process of introspection and selfexamination. At its core, self-awareness is about being in tune with our inner selves. It allows us to identify our emotional triggers, understand our habitual responses, and recognize the underlying beliefs that drive our behavior. This level of insight provides a solid foundation for personal growth and emotional regulation. Why is Self-Awareness Important? Self-awareness is crucial for several reasons, contributing to our overall well-being and success. Firstly, being self-aware helps us make more informed and thoughtful decisions. Understanding our values, strengths, and weaknesses can align our choices with our true selves, leading to more authentic and fulfilling outcomes. Additionally, understanding our emotions and their triggers allows us to manage them more effectively, stay calm under pressure, respond rather than react to challenging situations, and maintain a balanced emotional state.

Furthermore, self-awareness enhances our ability to communicate and connect with others. Understanding our emotions and behaviors allows us to empathize with others, build stronger relationships, and navigate social interactions more smoothly. Recognizing our areas for improvement is the first step towards personal development, as self-awareness helps us identify our weaknesses and take proactive steps to address them, leading to continuous growth and selfimprovement. In the workplace, self-awareness is a key component of effective leadership, as self-aware leaders can better understand their impact on others, make more strategic decisions, and create a positive work environment. Why Should We Care About Self-Awareness? Caring about self-awareness is essential because it directly influences our quality of life and our ability to achieve our goals. Self-awareness allows us to recognize and address negative thought patterns and emotional states before they escalate, enhancing our mental health and promoting overall emotional wellbeing. Understanding our stress triggers and how we typically respond to stress, we can develop healthier coping strategies, reducing the likelihood of burnout and helping us maintain a more balanced life.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 50

The Impact of Self-Awareness The impact of self-awareness on our lives is profound and far-reaching. Self-aware individuals are better equipped to understand and empathize with others, leading to more meaningful and harmonious personal and professional relationships. In leadership roles, self-awareness is critical for understanding the impact of one's actions on others, enabling self-aware leaders to build stronger teams, foster a positive work culture, and inspire trust and loyalty. Living in alignment with our values and understanding our true selves leads to a deeper sense of fulfillment and satisfaction, as self-awareness helps us pursue meaningful and aligned goals.

Additionally, self-aware individuals are more resilient in the face of challenges, as they better understand their inner resources and can draw on them to navigate difficult situations effectively. When we are self-aware, we can live more authentically, being true to ourselves and our values, which leads to greater satisfaction and fulfillment in life. Self-awareness also enhances our ability to make decisions aligned with our goals and values, leading to more successful and fulfilling outcomes in both personal and professional realms. How to Build Self-Awareness Building self-awareness is an active and continuous process that requires intentional effort and practice. One effective strategy is to engage in mindfulness, which involves actively paying attention to the present moment without judgment. Mindfulness helps us become more aware of our thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations, and regular mindfulness practices such as meditation or deep breathing exercises can enhance self-awareness. Another strategy is to actively reflect on our daily experiences and interactions, making journaling a powerful tool. By actively writing about our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, we can explore the underlying reasons behind them. Seeking feedback from trusted friends, family members, or colleagues can also provide valuable insights into how others perceive our behavior and its impact on them. Being open to constructive criticism and using it as a learning opportunity can further enhance self-awareness. Feedback can be a phenomenal tool; be open to it! Understanding our core values is another aspect of selfawareness. Reflecting on what is most important to us and how these values influence our decisions and actions provides clarity and helps us align with our true selves. Paying attention to our emotional responses throughout the day and noticing what triggers certain emotions and how we typically react to them can also help us manage our emotions more effectively. Setting specific, measurable goals for personal development and creating a plan to work on them while regularly reviewing our progress and adjusting our goals as needed can further enhance selfawareness.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 51

Additionally, self-awareness enables us to approach conflicts with a clearer understanding of our emotions and motivations, allowing us to address issues and find mutually beneficial solutions constructively. As a fundamental component of emotional intelligence, selfawareness enhances our overall EI, improving our ability to navigate complex social situations, manage stress, and achieve personal and professional success. With a better understanding of our emotional triggers, we can develop healthier coping mechanisms to deal with stress and adversity, improving mental and physical health. Self-Awareness is YOUR Superpower Self-awareness is not just a skill but a powerful tool that can transform our lives. By understanding our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, we can make more informed decisions, build stronger relationships, and achieve greater personal and professional success. Building selfawareness is a challenging task, but the rewards are worth it. It unlocks our potential for growth, resilience, and fulfillment, ultimately leading to a more balanced and satisfying life. The benefits of self-awareness extend beyond personal development, as self-aware individuals contribute to a positive organizational climate, enhance team performance, and drive innovation in the workplace. Investing in self-awareness is a personal journey and a collective effort toward creating a more understanding, compassionate, and thriving world.

THE FEMALE BRAIN IS WIRED FOR SUCCESS BY LISA HUSEBOE Scientists have found that women’s brains are naturally set up for leadership. Key areas in the female brain have more gray matter, which helps with decision-making, self-control, and handling emotions. For instance, a woman working as a risk manager, who helps her company avoid problems, can stay calm under pressure and make good choices for her team. Memory and Multitasking Superpowers The female brain’s hippocampus, packed with gray matter, boosts memory and the ability to manage multiple tasks. This means a woman working as an insurance adjuster, who reviews and settles claims, can remember important details and handle complex cases smoothly. Emotional Awareness and Empathy Women have more gray matter in the insula, a part of the brain linked to understanding emotions. This makes women naturally more empathetic. A female case manager, for example, who helps coordinate patient care, can understand her clients’ emotions better, making sure they feel cared for. Strength in Social Connections Women are often excellent at social skills, thanks to a strong mirror neuron system, which aids in understanding others’ feelings. A woman in a leadership role can sense when her team members are stressed and offer support, creating a friendly and productive environment.

Big-Picture Thinking With strong connections between the brain’s two halves, women are able to think holistically. This helps them consider multiple perspectives and come up with creative solutions. For example, a female industry leader can ensure that different parts of a business work together toward common goals. The Power of Intuition Women’s brains are built for intuition. They have more gray matter in areas that help with quick, instinctive thinking. This helps women make fast, effective decisions. A female risk manager, for instance, can quickly identify possible issues and act to prevent them, balancing her analytical and intuitive abilities. Let’s recognize and celebrate these natural strengths that make women effective leaders, from risk managers to industry leaders. Science shows that these unique skills contribute to success, foster empathy, and build strong communities.

UNLOCKING RECOVERY: THE LIFE-CHANGING BENEFITS OF A CERTIFIED HAND THERAPIST

BY CHIKITA MANN A nurse case manager must coordinate occupational therapy for an injured worker with a hand injury. The authorized treating physician is specifically requesting a certified hand therapist. Why is certification important for a hand therapist? A **certified hand therapist (CHT)** plays a pivotal role in the recovery and rehabilitation of individuals with hand and upper extremity injuries. Whether dealing with fractures, tendon repairs, nerve injuries, or repetitive strain conditions, a certified hand therapist provides specialized care that is crucial for restoring function, strength, and dexterity. The benefits of working with a CHT are extensive, spanning from their deep expertise to the personalized and precise treatment they offer.

1. Specialized Knowledge and Expertise Certified hand therapists undergo extensive training to become experts in the evaluation and treatment of hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder conditions. A CHT is either an occupational therapist (OT) or a physical therapist (PT) who has acquired at least three years of clinical experience and completed a minimum of 4,000 hours of direct practice in hand therapy before becoming eligible for certification. This advanced level of training equips CHTs with a deep understanding of the complex anatomy of the hand and upper extremities, as well as the intricate interplay between muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and bones. They are adept at recognizing the nuances of various injuries and conditions, allowing them to develop highly tailored treatment plans. In addition, their certification ensures that they are up to date on the latest research and techniques, giving patients access to the most effective and cutting-edge treatments.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 56

2. Improved Treatment Outcomes One of the key advantages of working with a certified hand therapist is the significant improvement in treatment outcomes. A CHT has the expertise to assess not just the injury but also the functional needs of the patient, whether the goal is returning to work, regaining independence in daily tasks, or achieving full athletic performance. By providing focused care, CHTs help patients recover faster and more completely. They are skilled in designing specific rehabilitation protocols that include exercises to restore strength, improve range of motion, and increase dexterity. Additionally, CHTs can identify potential complications early, such as stiffness, scar tissue formation, or nerve issues, and intervene promptly to prevent longterm impairment. 3. Comprehensive and Personalized Care Hand therapy is a highly specialized area of rehabilitation, and a certified hand therapist offers personalized care that addresses the unique aspects of each patient’s injury and lifestyle. For example, someone recovering from a hand injury may require a very different approach than someone healing from an elbow or shoulder issue. A CHT considers all aspects of the injury, including the type of trauma, surgical repairs, the patient’s occupation, and even their hobbies, to create a comprehensive and individualized treatment plan. Certified hand therapists are skilled in a variety of treatment modalities, including splinting, custom orthotics, manual therapy, and therapeutic exercises. They can also provide education and guidance on proper body mechanics and ergonomics to prevent future injuries. By tailoring the rehabilitation process to the specific needs of the patient, CHTs enhance the likelihood of a full recovery. 4. Coordination with Other Healthcare Providers Another key benefit of working with a certified hand therapist is their ability to collaborate closely with other healthcare providers, including surgeons, general physicians, and case managers. For injured workers, in particular, this collaboration is essential. A CHT ensures that treatment plans align with the recommendations of the authorized treating physician and any specific guidelines required by the worker’s compensation program. Certified hand therapists are also knowledgeable about post-surgical protocols, making them valuable partners in post-operative care. They understand the importance of timing and the progression of exercises after surgery, which is critical for avoiding complications and achieving the best possible outcomes. Close coordination with the healthcare team ensures a smoother rehabilitation process and better communication between the patient, therapists, and doctors.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 57

5. Maximized Function and Independence The ultimate goal of hand therapy is to help patients regain as much function and independence as possible. Certified hand therapists focus on both physical recovery and functional rehabilitation, ensuring that patients can return to their daily activities, work, and hobbies with minimal disruption. For many individuals, particularly injured workers, regaining full use of their hand or upper extremity is essential for returning to their job. A CHT’s specialized training enables them to identify key areas that need strengthening or improved dexterity to meet the demands of the patient’s specific occupation. By targeting treatment to maximize function, certified hand therapists empower patients to return to their pre-injury levels of activity and maintain a high quality of life. The benefits of working with a certified hand therapist are clear. With their specialized knowledge, experience, and focus on personalized care, CHTs provide the highest level of rehabilitation for hand and upper extremity injuries. From improving treatment outcomes to facilitating a smooth and complete recovery, certified hand therapists play an invaluable role in helping patients regain strength, function, and independence after injury or surgery. For those dealing with complex hand injuries or post-surgical rehabilitation, the expertise of a CHT is a critical component of successful recovery.

Dear Dr. Medina

A valuable resource for adjusters, nurses, and case managers navigating foot health—one question at a time

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 62

Q

What are the most effective ways to address chronic foot pain caused by prolonged standing or repetitive movement at work?

I recommend wearing compression socks. This helps improve the circulation and helps reduce swelling. The appropriate footwear selection is also very important. You may choose shoe wear that has very good arch support and has a comfortable and adequate fit. Some patients will need to consider custom orthotics to provide that additional support and correct any malalignment issues to the foot. For example patients that have high arches or flatfeet. If you are able to take frequent breaks to rest your legs and feet and try to elevate them. If you have issues with swelling and/or discomfort performing foot and ankle stretches during your breaks as well. To continue to improve your flexibility once you're back at home warm, Epsom salt soaks as well as a light gentle massage with Menthol products, my favorite Vicks vapor rub for example helps to soothe muscles and reduce achiness. If these recommendations do not provide enough relief then that is the time when you should see your doctor.

Q

How can employers create a work place environment that supports foot health and minimizes the risk of common injuries?

Footwear is very important, specifically providing proper safety footwear for the job description. I am very much in favor of utilizing anti-fatigue mats especially for jobs that require long periods of standing if that option is able to be provided. Maintaining a clean work area without clutter or debris in your main walking areas in order to avoid twist and rolls of the ankle, slip and falls allowing breaks throughout the day in order to rest the feet. This especially goes with jobs that entail standing for long periods of time. I am a strong believer in employers trying to educate their employees on health issues, wellness as well as being mindful of the ergonomic design of the work spaces. I am also a big advocate of employers having lectures with different specialties. In my case, foot health comes into the work place and speaks with their employees in a way of educating them on foot health and how to minimize the risk of common injuries in the work place environment.

Q

What are some of the lesser known causes of foot discomfort that workers should be aware of and how can they address them?

There are many other sources of foot discomfort. For example peripheral neuropathy which we usually see in our diabetic patients when they have nerve damage. Neuromas which are nerves that become irritated between toes. This occurs many times from ill-fitting shoe gear, not wearing the appropriate type of shoes for their place of employment and wearing the correct shoe gear for their foot type. Many patients have issues with poor circulation and they are standing for long periods of time in their workplace and this causes swelling to the lower extremity. This is where taking a break and elevating the feet as well as utilizing compression socks are beneficial. In the case of the nerve irritation/neuroma we would like to wear shoes that are comfortable and have a wider toebox. Many times we have to use custom made orthotics or metatarsal pads within the shoe. We also try to avoid ladies high heels that apply more pressure to the ball of the foot. Listen always to your body when you have discomfort. Please do not ignore it and try to address these issues early in order to prevent further complications so your podiatrist can then diagnose the cause of your foot pain and/or discomfort and you receive the appropriate treatment.

Q

Can you recommend daily habits or routines to improve foot strength and flexibility for injury prevention?

Stretching regularly is the most beneficial at least two to three times a week and warming up and stretching before any physical activity is key. Do not forget to warm up before stretching. If your job is mostly sedentary try to add in desk stretches to combat the stiffness from prolonged sitting. Flexibility exercises in general will always help loosen tight muscles, increase your blood flow to your muscles and joints, and help alleviate soreness and everyday stiffness. Examples of stretching exercises for improving your flexibility include dynamic stretching as well as static stretching, yoga and Pilates. Yoga in particular combines stretching with deep breathing and mindfulness that improves both your mental and physical well being.

Revolutionizing Carpal Tunnel Treatment: Dr. Eric Balaguer and the Seg-WAY Endoscopic Release System In a recent interview with Dr. Eric J. Balaguer, his commitment to advancing patient care and supporting injured workers' recovery became clear. Using the cutting-edge Seg-WAY endoscopic release system, Dr. Balaguer offers a minimally invasive approach to carpal tunnel surgery that ensures faster recovery times, improved outcomes, and a quicker return to work for injured employees. "At the heart of my practice is helping patients regain their quality of life as efficiently as possible," Dr. Balaguer shares. "The Seg-WAY system allows us to perform carpal tunnel surgery in a way that minimizes downtime, enabling injured workers to return to their jobs and lives sooner." One of the most significant advancements in carpal tunnel treatment is the ability to perform the Seg-WAY procedure in an office setting. This innovation, introduced by the Seg-WAY system three years ago, has transformed how carpal tunnel release is conducted. By using a fully disposable system and a tablet for visualization, the procedure is not only safer but also more accessible and cost-effective. Dr. Balaguer has already performed many of these procedures in his office, and the results have been outstanding. "Being able to treat patients in the office decreases costs significantly and makes the entire process much easier for them," he explains. "Patients appreciate the convenience and comfort of not having to go to a surgical center while still receiving high-quality care." BLOOM MAGAZINE | 66

This improvement ensures that injured workers can quickly and safely return to their normal activities without unnecessary delays or complications, aligning perfectly with the goals of workers' compensation stakeholders. The benefits of the Seg-WAY system extend beyond its minimally invasive technique and in-office capabilities. Unlike traditional open surgery, which may require extended recovery times and multiple appointments, the Seg-WAY procedure is designed for efficiency. "We can often see patients returning to light office work in just a few days, with full-duty work possible in as little as two weeks," Dr. Balaguer explains. Dr. Balaguer’s expertise, coupled with the advanced Seg-WAY system, delivers consistently successful results. "Over 90% of workers treated with this method return to work within two weeks, and only a small percentage require additional therapy," he notes. This high success rate not only benefits injured workers but also reduces overall workers' compensation costs for employers. By minimizing the need for long-term care and reducing the risk of complications, the Seg-WAY system represents a cost-effective solution for treating workplace injuries.

Dr. Balaguer's approach emphasizes seamless communication with employers, adjusters, and case managers throughout the treatment process. "We keep all parties informed at every step, from diagnosis to postsurgical recovery plans," he says. To ensure accessibility, Dr. Balaguer’s practice offers expedited evaluations and scheduling for injured workers. "We understand the importance of getting employees back to work as quickly as possible, which is why we prioritize early intervention and prompt treatment," he explains. Recognizing the challenges faced by injured workers, Dr. Balaguer strives to make the surgical process as stress-free as possible. "Our goal is to create an environment where patients feel supported and at ease," he shares. The SegWAY system’s minimally invasive nature also means patients can drive themselves to and from appointments and enjoy a quicker return to normal activities. Dr. Eric Balaguer is a board-certified hand and upper extremity surgeon with extensive training in microvascular surgery, nerve repairs, and sports medicine. Based in South Florida, he specializes in treating conditions of the hand, wrist, and elbow, with a focus on advanced, minimally invasive procedures like the Seg-WAY endoscopic release system. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 97 BLOOM MAGAZINE | 67

Beyond his clinical expertise, Dr. Balaguer is deeply committed to his community, offering educational seminars and working closely with employers to enhance workplace safety and injury management. In 2024, Dr. Balaguer was honored with the Best Doctor in Workers’ Compensation Award. This highly regarded award is determined by employers, adjusters, and carriers, making it a significant recognition of his expertise and dedication to helping injured workers. This award reflects the trust and respect Dr. Balaguer has earned within the workers’ compensation community and highlights his commitment to delivering exceptional care for injured employees. For employers, the Seg-WAY system provides a solution that prioritizes both employee health and workplace productivity. "By helping employees recover quickly and safely, we create a win-win scenario for everyone involved," Dr. Balaguer says. Dr. Balaguer’s innovative use of the Seg-WAY endoscopic release system sets new standards for treating carpal tunnel syndrome, ensuring injured workers receive the best care possible while minimizing downtime and costs. Employers interested in learning more about Dr. Balaguer’s approach or scheduling an in-service session are encouraged to reach out to his office. With a focus on faster recovery, cost savings, and superior outcomes, Dr. Balaguer is a trusted partner in workers’ compensation care. TO SCHEDULE A PATIENT WITH DR. A NIGHT OF CELEBRATION AND EXCELLENCE: THE 2024 BLOOM AWARDS GALA After four years, the Bloom Awards Gala made its grand return as an in-person celebration, and it was everything we dreamed it would be. The evening shined a spotlight on the workers’ compensation industry’s brightest stars, honoring their achievements and celebrating their excellence in true red-carpet style. We spoke with Mari Diaz, founder of the Bloom Awards and CEO of OM Marketing, about the night’s magic, the hard work behind the scenes, and her deep gratitude for the people who made it all possible. Bloom Magazine: Mari, congratulations on such a spectacular evening! How does it feel to have brought the gala back in person?

Mari Diaz: Thank you! It feels incredible—surreal, really. After four years, being able to host the Bloom Awards Gala again in person was everything I hoped for and more. Seeing everyone walk the red carpet, dressed to the nines, celebrating together—it was a moment I’ll never forget. There was so much love, pride, and joy in that room. It reminded me why this event means so much. Bloom Magazine: The event was so beautifully executed. What made it all come together so perfectly? Mari Diaz: Honestly, the credit goes to my incredible team. I couldn’t have done this without them. Anailis Diaz was my right hand through the entire process. She gave her all, every step of the way, and I don’t have the words to thank her enough. Melissa Diaz and Samantha Diaz were equally amazing—they put so much heart into making every detail just right. This event is proof of what we can accomplish when we work together, and I am so grateful for each of them. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 69

Bloom Magazine: Any final thoughts as you reflect on the evening?

Bloom Magazine: The toy drive was such a beautiful part of the evening. Can you tell us more about it? Mari Diaz: It was one of the highlights of the night! This year marked our 16th year hosting the toy drive, and it was a huge success. We collected an incredible amount of toys—far more than I ever imagined. Seeing the generosity of everyone who attended was so moving. These toys went to No More Tears, an organization that does such important work for children in need. Knowing that we were able to bring joy to so many little ones this holiday season made this event even more meaningful. Bloom Magazine: The awards celebrated so many inspiring people. What does this event mean to you personally? Mari Diaz: For me, the Bloom Awards Gala is about shining a light on the people who make this industry extraordinary. This was the 13th annual Bloom Awards, and the winners and nominees represent the best of workers’ compensation— leaders who show us what’s possible when we bring dedication and heart to our work. This year’s winners were nothing short of amazing, and it was such a privilege to celebrate them in a way that felt special. Seeing their excitement and watching them shine—it was everything.

Mari Diaz: I just want to express my deepest gratitude. To our winners and nominees—you are the reason this event exists. Your excellence and leadership inspire all of us, and it was an honor to celebrate you in style. To our sponsors—thank you for believing in this vision and making it possible. Your support means the world, and we couldn’t have done it without you. And to the Bloom team —Melissa, Samantha, and Anailis— you are the heart of this gala. Your passion, creativity, and dedication brought this dream to life, and I am so proud of what we accomplished together. This event wasn’t just a night of awards; it was a celebration of excellence, resilience, and the incredible people who make this industry shine. To everyone who made this gala a success, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Together, we’ve created something beautiful, and I can’t wait to see where we go from here. Keep blooming!

INSIDE THE SUCCESS OF THE 2024 GB FLEXWORKS/MDCPS VENDOR FAIR In April 30, 2024, GB FlexWorks and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) hosted an Ancillary Vendor Fair, an event that brought together vendors from across the district to celebrate their vital role in supporting the Workers’ Compensation program. Coordinated by Isabel Dovale, VP- Provider Network Development with Gallagher Bassett, and Rosa Royo, Director of Workers’ Compensation, this event highlighted the importance of partnership, appreciation, and community building. Bloom Magazine sat down with Isabel to discuss the effort, dedication, and meaning behind this successful event. Bloom Magazine: Isabel, the 2024 Ancillary Vendor Fair was a huge success! What inspired you and Rosa to organize this event? Isabel Dovale: Thank you! The Ancillary Vendor Fair was all about showing our appreciation for the people who help make the mission and vision of the program a reality. Vendors play such a key role in our system, and Rosa and I wanted to create a meaningful event where we could connect with them, acknowledge their efforts, and let them know how much their contributions matter. GB FlexWorks and MDCPS don’t just see vendors as service providers—they’re truly partners in what we do. Bloom Magazine: What was the most rewarding part of putting this event together? Isabel Dovale: Seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces and the genuine sense of connection. It was rewarding to watch vendors interact with our team, share their experiences, and feel recognized. Knowing that Rosa and I were able to create an atmosphere of gratitude and positive connections made every moment of planning worth it. Bloom Magazine: The event also included interviews with attendees. One question you asked was, “What do you value in your vendors?” What stood out to you in their responses?

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 81

Isabel Dovale: The responses reinforced everything we aim for in our partnerships. People mentioned qualities like dependability, clear communication, empathy and integrity. What really struck me was the emphasis on trust—how much it matters to have vendors who follow through on their promises and are there when it counts. Bloom Magazine: Events like this require a lot of planning and coordination. What kept you motivated throughout the process?

Bloom Magazine: Any final thoughts you’d like to share with our readers?

Isabel Dovale: For both Rosa and me, it was the knowledge that this event would highlight the success of the program through collaboration and partnership. Our vendors are a vital part of the GB FlexWorks/MDCPS family, and this fair was an opportunity to say, “We see you, and we appreciate you.” That sense of purpose kept us going, even when the logistics became challenging.

Isabel Dovale: I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the vendors who participated and the GB FlexWorks/MDCPS team that made this event possible. Events like the Ancillary Vendor Fair remind us of the strength that comes from working closely together. Rosa and I are honored to be part of a community that understands the importance of these partnerships.

Bloom Magazine: Looking ahead, what do you hope for the future of the Ancillary Vendor Fair?

The 2024 GB FlexWorks/MDCPS Ancillary Vendor Fair was a celebration of collaboration and dedication, exemplified by the leadership of Isabel Dovale and Rosa Royo. Their efforts brought the community together, strengthening the foundation for continued success in supporting GB FlexWorks/Miami-Dade schools.

Isabel Dovale: Our focus will always be on fostering meaningful connections and continuing to show our appreciation for our partners. The Vendor Fair is an opportunity to strengthen relationships and ensure that everyone involved feels valued for their contributions to our schools and community.

MARI DIAZ ON BUILDING BLOOM AND THE ORANGE LAB BLOOM Magazine: Mari, The Orange Lab is officially opening its doors this June. This is such an exciting milestone. Tell us about the journey that led to this moment. Mari Diaz: This has been a dream in the making for years, and to see it finally come to life is surreal. The Orange Lab is a learning and certification hub exclusively for women in the workers’ compensation community. It’s built to help women grow, learn, and bloom through courses, workshops, and masterclasses led by some of the most respected leaders in our industry. Back in 2020, we started hosting weekly masterclasses through BLOOM. At the time, we wanted to create a space where women in workers’ comp could connect, learn, and support each other. What we didn’t realize was just how much it would take off. Week after week, we saw the impact these masterclasses had, and we knew we had to build something bigger. That’s where the vision for The Orange Lab was born—out of a deep desire to do education differently and create opportunities that truly empower women in this field. BLOOM Magazine: Why did you choose to name it The Orange Lab? Mari Diaz: Orange is such a powerful color. It represents growth, energy, and transformation, which is exactly what this space is about. Orange symbolizes boldness and courage, pushing us to take chances and embrace new beginnings. It’s uplifting and energizing, inspiring us to step outside our comfort zones. It represents prosperity and abundance, attracting success and positive change. Most importantly, it stands for strength and endurance, reminding us that no matter how many times we fall, we rise again. We didn’t want The Orange Lab to just be another education platform. We wanted it to be a place where women feel seen, supported, and encouraged to go after their biggest goals. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 86

BLOOM Magazine: What makes The Orange Lab different from other professional development programs? Mari Diaz: We’re flipping the script on traditional learning. So often, education can feel stiff, outdated, and disconnected from real-world challenges. The Orange Lab is about making learning personal, relevant, and empowering. We focus on real conversations, real experiences, and real growth. Women in workers’ comp have unique challenges and opportunities, and we want to provide the kind of education that actually speaks to them. Through our masterclasses, workshops, and certification programs, we’re not just handing out information —we’re building a community where women can truly bloom into their best selves. BLOOM Magazine: You’re also inviting facilitators to be part of this. Who should consider joining, and what can they expect? Mari Diaz: If you’re passionate about sharing your knowledge and helping others grow, we want you! We’re looking for facilitators who are experts in their fields and want to lead courses, workshops, or on-demand masterclass series. Facilitators will have the opportunity to teach, mentor, and connect with an engaged community of women who are eager to learn. Whether you’ve been teaching for years or this is your first time leading a program, if you have something valuable to share, we want to hear from you! BLOOM Magazine: What kind of topics are you looking for? Mari Diaz: We want to cover everything that helps women in workers’ comp bloom in their careers and personal growth. Some of the areas we’re focusing on include: Leadership & Professional Development Workers’ Compensation & Industry Expertise Mindset, Wellness & Personal Growth Business, Marketing & Entrepreneurship Financial Wellness & Career Growth Mental Health & Emotional Resilience Women’s Health & Wellness Nutrition BLOOM Magazine: How can someone get involved as a facilitator or participant? Mari Diaz: It’s easy! If you want to be a facilitator, just email us at teambloom@ommktg.com with your course topic and specialty. Once we receive your submission, we’ll send more details on the program and requirements. For participants, stay tuned! We’ll be announcing our first courses soon, and we can’t wait to welcome you to The Orange Lab. This is just the beginning, and we are so excited for what’s ahead! BLOOM MAGAZINE | 87

Selecting the Right Workers' Compensation Doctor: A Medical Case Manager’s Approach WRITTEN BY JADELL MENDEZ

Medical Case Managers (MCMs) play a crucial role in the workers' compensation system, ensuring injured employees receive proper medical care while facilitating their return to work. One of their key responsibilities is selecting the right doctor to manage an injured worker's treatment. The choice of physician can significantly impact recovery time, claim costs, and the overall efficiency of the workers' compensation process. This article explores the essential factors MCMs consider when choosing a workers' compensation doctor.

3. Track Record in Successful Return-to-Work Outcomes An effective doctor focuses not just on treating symptoms but also on facilitating a patient’s functional recovery. MCMs favor providers who support modified duty programs, collaborate with employers, and recommend suitable accommodations that allow injured workers to resume employment as soon as possible. A strong history of positive return-to-work outcomes is a key factor in the selection process.

KEY FACTORS MEDICAL CASE MANAGERS CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING A DOCTOR. 1. Specialization and Experience in Occupational Medicine MCMs prioritize doctors with expertise in occupational medicine or relevant specialties such as orthopedics, neurology, and physical therapy. Physicians with experience treating work-related injuries understand the complexities of workplace injuries and can tailor treatment plans that align with job demands and return-to-work goals. Board certification and a history of treating similar cases are key indicators of a provider’s suitability. 2. Understanding of Workers' Compensation Guidelines Workers' compensation involves legal and procedural requirements that differ from standard healthcare settings. MCMs seek doctors who are well-versed in state-specific workers’ compensation laws, treatment guidelines, and return-to-work protocols. These physicians must also provide clear documentation, as accurate and timely medical reports are essential for claim processing and compliance with regulatory standards.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 88

4. Communication and Collaboration Skills Effective communication between the doctor, MCMs, claim adjusters, employers, and physical therapists is critical. MCMs assess a provider’s willingness to engage in discussions about treatment progress, work restrictions, and recovery expectations. Doctors who proactively provide updates and recommendations help streamline the workers’ compensation process and prevent unnecessary claim delays. 5. Evidence-Based Treatment Approaches MCMs prioritize physicians who follow evidence-based medicine and avoid excessive or unnecessary treatments. Overprescription of opioids, unwarranted surgeries, and prolonged disability status can lead to higher claim costs and delayed recovery. Preference is given to doctors who emphasize conservative treatments first, such as physical therapy and rehabilitation, before considering invasive procedures.

Selecting the right workers' compensation doctor is a critical decision that impacts the injured worker’s recovery, claim efficiency, and return-towork success. Medical Case Managers play an instrumental role in identifying physicians who meet the necessary expertise, compliance, and communication standards. By carefully evaluating these factors, MCMs ensure injured employees receive high-quality care while helping to maintain an effective and cost-conscious workers' compensation system.

Jadell Mendez Bilingual Medical Case Manager, President & CEO MEDTeam Care Management

6. Reputation and Network Participation A provider’s reputation within the workers’ compensation community is another crucial factor. MCMs often rely on feedback from other case managers, adjusters, and employers to gauge a doctor’s effectiveness. Additionally, ensuring that a provider is within the insurance carrier’s network can help manage treatment costs while maintaining quality care. 7. Efficiency in Medical Reporting and Compliance Timely and detailed medical reporting is a non-negotiable requirement for workers' compensation cases. MCMs select doctors who provide comprehensive reports on injury status, work capacity, and recommended treatments. Physicians who promptly complete necessary paperwork facilitate faster claim approvals and ensure injured workers receive uninterrupted medical care. CHALLENGES IN SELECTING THE RIGHT DOCTOR Despite these selection criteria, MCMs face several challenges, including: 1. Limited Availability: Certain specialties may have shortages of providers, especially in rural areas. Also, there is a lack of additional physicians to provide additional care, one time change of treating physician, or to complete and IME, etc. 2. Cost Considerations: Balancing quality care with costeffectiveness remains a challenge, particularly when insurance companies seek to control expenses, or providers not willing to accept the fee for service under the workers compensation insurance. 3. Non-compliance: In some cases, dealing with an injured worker who does not follow the medical treatment, avoid office visits or simply does not cooperate during the rehab process becomes one of the most difficult challenges for MCMs services. Chameleons Among Us – The Art of Faking It WRITTEN BY MARI DIAZ In a world that says it values authenticity and individuality, there’s a certain kind of person who seems to thrive by doing the exact opposite. These people are what we can call “chameleons”—those who know how to change themselves to fit into any social setting, not out of genuine curiosity or kindness, but simply because they crave attention and acceptance. They’re experts at blending in, adapting their personalities to reflect the people around them. But what drives this behavior, and what is the cost— to both themselves and those around them?

Chameleons have an unusual talent for reading the room and becoming exactly who others want them to be. Like actors in a play, they can easily switch beliefs, interests, and attitudes to match their surroundings. One moment, they might be passionately supporting a cause at a café, but if they’re in a different group later, they’ll eagerly take the opposite stance if it helps them fit in. For chameleons, it’s all about approval in the moment, about grasping for admiration—even if it means giving up any sense of who they truly are (if they even know that anymore).

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 93

For them, it’s not about being real or honest; it’s about surviving in a world where they feel a need to belong. They act this way not because they want genuine connections, but because they constantly need to be liked and noticed. They will keep bending and molding themselves if it means others will like them. But there’s a cost to living like this, one they may not even realize. Living a life of constant pretense is exhausting. Chameleons put so much effort into keeping up their image that they often lose sight of who they really are. They’ve gotten so used to pleasing others that their real selves have faded into the background. And while they may seem to have a wide social circle, these relationships are usually shallow and built on appearances. Real connections—the kind that require honesty and vulnerability—are often sacrificed in their constant quest for approval.

In the end, chameleons live in a world of mirrors, reflecting the values and beliefs of those around them without ever showing anything real of their own. They remind us of the emptiness that comes from constantly seeking approval and the hollowness that follows a life built on pretending. And maybe they remind us to value our own authenticity even more— to hold on to the freedom that comes from showing up as ourselves, flaws and all. Because being real matters. Never hide your true self or try to blend in just to fit someone else’s idea of who you should be. Embrace who you are, and let your uniqueness shine. In a world that often feels full of masks and pretenders, staying true to yourself isn’t just brave—it’s priceless.

Eventually, the people around them feel the effects. It’s one thing to think you share values and interests with someone, only to later realize they were just playing a role. When the truth comes out, it can be disappointing, even painful, to see the illusion for what it is. The truth about chameleons often reveals itself in ways that leave others feeling let down and deceived.

The Power of Being Intentional with Your Words WRITTEN BY NICKCOLA BARBER It wasn’t until I began to lean into my spiritual practice— journaling, speaking affirmations, sitting in stillness— that I started to understand the true weight of my words. I began experimenting. Each morning, before checking my phone or opening my inbox, I’d say aloud: “Today will be a good day. I am grounded, I am capable, I am ready.” And slowly, the days did begin to feel lighter. I wasn’t just saying it—I was setting the tone for how I would show up. There’s something sacred about the words we speak. They’re not just sounds or letters strung together—they’re seeds. Every word we release carries a vibration, an energy that echoes into the world around us and returns to us in form. When we speak with intention, we give life to our dreams, our healing, and our becoming.

“Your words are seeds— speak them with reverence.” For a long time, I didn’t realize how much power my words held. I would casually say things like “I’m always tired” or “Nothing ever works out for me,” without a second thought. I thought I was just being honest. But the more I said it, the more I experienced it. My words became selffulfilling prophecies. They shaped how I saw myself, how I moved through the world, and what I allowed myself to receive.

“Speak as if the universe is listening—because it is.” There’s a difference between reacting to life and cocreating it. Speaking with intention is one way we move from survival to sovereignty. When you say, “I will overcome any adversity or obstacle,” you’re not pretending challenges don’t exist. You’re reminding yourself of your power to rise through them. That shift in mindset becomes a shift in energy—and that shift in energy becomes a shift in reality.

“Your voice holds vision. Use it to build the life you desire.” Being intentional with your words doesn’t require perfection. It requires presence. It’s about pausing before you speak and asking yourself, Is this in alignment with who I want to be? With the life I’m building? Whether it’s the way you speak to yourself in the mirror, the way you talk about your goals, or how you describe your relationships—words matter. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 95

Journal Prompts to Align Your Voice with Your Vision!

If you’ve ever spoken life into a friend and watched them light up, then you already know the magic. You can do the same for yourself. You can speak healing over your body. You can call in clarity. You can affirm your joy, your abundance, your peace. It starts with one choice, one phrase, one intentional sentence.

1. What are three things I often say about myself that I want to reframe with love and intention? 2. How do I speak to myself when no one is around? How can I shift that inner dialogue? 3. What affirmations make me feel empowered, calm, or inspired? 4. What would it feel like to truly believe in the words I speak? 5. Write a personal mantra or affirmation that reflects who you are becoming. 6. When was the last time my words changed the outcome of a situation—for better or worse? 7. If I spoke to my life like it was listening, what would I want it to hear every day?

“Let your words be both your anchor and your wings.” Here are a few simple but powerful phrases to begin your day with: • “Today, I choose peace.” • “I am attracting what aligns with my highest good.” • “My voice is powerful, and I speak with purpose.” • “I am grateful for this day and all it brings.” • “I believe in the life I am creating.” You don’t have to shout it. You don’t have to say it for anyone else to hear. But say it like you mean it. Let the words sink in. Let them wrap around you like armor and honey. Being intentional with your words is a daily practice—a gentle reminder that you are both the speaker and the creator of your path. And when your voice and your vision are aligned, the universe listens. So, what are you speaking into your life today? BLOOM MAGAZINE | 96

A HEARTFELT PLEA: Men, Wake Up and Take Control of Your Health

WRITTEN BY NELSON GONZALEZ Men, it's time to wake up from this slumber of neglect. It's time to take control of your lives and prioritize your well-being. For too long, we've ignored the ticking time bomb of heart disease, cancer, and other chronic illnesses, allowing them to steal precious time from us and our loved ones. Imagine the tears in your loved ones' eyes, the pain they endure as they watch you suffer from the consequences of your neglect. Imagine the heartbreak they feel when you're gone too soon. Can you bear the thought of leaving them behind, your legacy cut short by a preventable disease? The statistics are stark. Men are more likely to die from all-cause mortality, heart disease, cancer, and metabolic dysfunction than women. It's a crisis that demands our attention. We must break free from the societal expectations that discourage men from seeking help or prioritizing their health. It's time to shatter the myth of invincibility and acknowledge that we are vulnerable.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 97

Your health is your greatest asset. It's the foundation upon which your entire life is built. Neglect it, and everything else will crumble. Fuel your body with the right nutrients, move your body regularly, and banish harmful habits like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Take control of your stress, your environment, and your choices. Remember, you are not alone in this fight. We are here to support you. Let's take back our health and live our lives to the fullest. For your sake, for the sake of your loved ones, wake up and take action. The numbers are alarming, but they don't tell the whole story. Imagine the man who missed his child's first steps because he was too sick to get out of bed. Imagine the father who couldn't play catch with his son because of chronic pain. Imagine the husband who couldn't be there for his partner when they needed him most. These are the real-life consequences of neglecting your health. Don't let these tragedies happen to you. Take control of your life and prioritize your well-being. Many of the diseases that afflict men are preventable. By making healthy lifestyle choices, you can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, and other chronic conditions. • Eat a healthy diet: Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. • Exercise regularly: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week. • Don't smoke: Smoking is a major risk factor for many diseases. Quitting smoking can significantly improve your health. • Manage stress: Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as meditation, yoga, or spending time in nature. • Get regular checkups: See your doctor for regular checkups and screenings. IF YOU'RE STRUGGLING WITH YOUR HEALTH, DON'T HESITATE TO SEEK HELP FROM A HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL. THERE ARE MANY RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO SUPPORT YOU ON YOUR JOURNEY TO BETTER HEALTH. MEN, IT'S TIME TO WAKE UP AND TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIVES. YOUR HEALTH IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR. DON'T LET THESE SILENT KILLERS STEAL YOUR PRECIOUS TIME.

Why I Love Cold Water Therapy and Crystal Masks for My Face WRITTEN BY MARI DIAZ When life feels overwhelming, or my skin just needs a little extra love, I turn to two of my favorite rituals—cold water therapy for the face and chilled crystal masks. These simple yet effective treatments not only transform my skin but also help me destress and relax. If you’ve never tried these cooling rituals, let me tell you why they’re worth adding to your self-care routine. They’re refreshing, soothing, and a quick way to feel rejuvenated—inside and out. Cold water therapy for the face is like a wake-up call for your skin. Splashing your face with ice-cold water or dipping it into a chilled bowl stimulates circulation, which helps reduce puffiness, tighten pores, and give you that healthy glow we all love. It’s especially great for those mornings when you feel like your face is holding onto yesterday’s tiredness. For me, it’s also my go-to trick when my skin feels inflamed or irritated. The cold helps calm redness and swelling, making my skin look and feel balanced. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 100

And here’s a little tip I love: Freeze herbs or flower petals like chamomile, mint, or rose into ice cubes and use them in your cold water therapy. Not only do they add a touch of luxury, but they also provide gentle benefits for your skin. Cold crystal masks are a slightly more indulgent way to enjoy the benefits of cooling treatments. Made from stones like jade or rose quartz, these masks feel amazing when chilled and placed over your face. The coolness helps reduce puffiness, especially around the eyes, while also soothing tired skin. But what I love most is how relaxing they are. When I use a cold crystal mask, it’s my time to lie back, close my eyes, and let the cool sensation work its magic. It’s like an instant de-stressor for both my skin and my mind. If you’re dealing with tension, sinus pressure, or just need a little break, this mask can be a lifesaver. Beyond the amazing benefits for your skin, these cooling rituals are also incredible for relaxation. There’s something about the refreshing sensation of cold water or the gentle weight of a crystal mask that makes it easier to let go of stress. I love starting my day with cold water therapy for my face—it wakes me up, makes me feel refreshed, and puts me in the right mindset. And in the evenings, a cold crystal mask is my go-to for unwinding. It’s a small but powerful way to feel calm and cared for. Ready to give these a try? Here’s how to start: 1. Cold Water Therapy for the Face 2. Fill a bowl with cold water and add a few ice cubes. 3. Dip your face in for a few seconds, or use a clean washcloth to gently pat the cold water onto your skin. 4. For an extra touch, freeze herbal or floral-infused ice cubes to add soothing properties. 5. Cold Crystal Mask 6. Chill your crystal mask in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. 7. Find a comfortable spot, place the mask over your face, and relax for 10–15 minutes. 8. Use this time to breathe deeply and let the cool sensation melt away stress. These simple rituals are more than just skincare—they’re little moments of self-care that leave you feeling refreshed, relaxed, and radiant. Whether it’s the invigorating boost of cold water therapy or the soothing touch of a chilled crystal mask, these treatments are an easy way to show yourself some love. If you’re looking for a quick way to refresh your skin and calm your mind, I can’t recommend these rituals enough. They’ve become some of my favorite ways to care for myself, and I hope you’ll enjoy them too.

Mindfulness, Mental Health & Crystals— Am I Onto Something? WRITTEN BY SAMANTHA DIAZ Life moves fast. Between deadlines, responsibilities, and the constant noise of the world, it’s easy to feel disconnected—from ourselves, from our emotions, from the present moment. As someone currently pursuing my master’s in mental health counseling, I spend a lot of time reflecting on what it means to truly care for our minds and spirits.

Mental health isn’t just about managing stress or treating symptoms—it’s about cultivating a deeper relationship with ourselves. That’s where mindfulness comes in. It’s a practice of paying attention, of slowing down, of noticing what we often ignore. Whether it’s through deep breathing, meditation, or simply being fully present in everyday tasks, mindfulness allows us to step out of autopilot and into awareness. Research shows that mindfulness brings about various positive psychological effects, including increased subjective well-being, reduced psychological symptoms and emotional reactivity, and improved behavioral regulation. And then, there are crystals. I genuinely believe in their healing energy—not just as beautiful stones, but as powerful tools for balance and intention. While mainstream science hasn’t fully embraced their effects, countless people, including myself, have experienced a sense of grounding, clarity, and emotional relief through working with them. Whether it's the soothing presence of amethyst or the heartopening energy of rose quartz, crystals have a way of enhancing mindfulness and fostering a deeper connection to ourselves. For me, the intersection of psychology and holistic practices is fascinating. Science tells us that mindfulness reduces stress, improves emotional regulation, and even changes the brain. And while crystals may not be a replacement for therapy or medication, if they bring comfort, intention, or even just a small moment of peace in a chaotic day, then they have value. At the end of the day, mental health is deeply personal. What works for one person may not work for another. The key is to stay open, explore, and find what brings you balance. For me, it’s a mix of psychology, mindfulness, and, yes, a little bit of crystals. What about you?

THE YEAR OF THE SNAKE A Time for Growth, Intuition, and Transformation WRITTEN BY MARI DIAZ The Year of the Snake is here, bringing a quiet but powerful energy of wisdom, renewal, and transformation. In Chinese astrology, the snake is known for its deep intuition, strategic thinking, and ability to shed what no longer serves it. This year is all about trusting yourself, making thoughtful moves, and stepping into a stronger, wiser version of who you are. Just like a snake sheds its skin, this is the perfect time to let go of habits, fears, or routines that aren’t working anymore. Whether it’s in your personal life, career, or relationships, embrace the idea that growth comes from releasing the old and making space for the new.

The snake is deeply intuitive, and this year encourages you to listen to that inner voice. If something feels off, trust that feeling. If an opportunity excites you, don’t overthink it. Go for it. This is a time to move with confidence and let your instincts guide you in the right direction. The energy of the snake isn’t about rushing into things. It’s about being intentional. Slow down, think things through, and make strategic choices that align with your long-term vision. Small, focused steps will lead to big wins. Change can feel uncertain, but the snake reminds us that transformation is natural and necessary. Instead of resisting it, step into it with an open heart. Let go of what’s holding you back and trust that something better is on the way. The Year of the Snake is all about stepping into your power, trusting yourself, and embracing change with confidence. Stay focused, listen to your intuition, and make moves that truly align with who you are. This year has the potential to be one of your most transformative yet! BLOOM MAGAZINE | 105

COULD YOUR NEXT CUP OF TEA BE THE HEALING RITUAL YOU NEED? WRITTEN BY MARI DIAZ When life feels heavy or overwhelming, I find myself turning to one of my favorite self-care rituals—making a cup of tea. It’s simple, soothing, and always feels like a little hug from Mother Earth. Tea has become more than just a drink for me. It’s a way to slow down, take a breath, and reconnect with myself. Whether I need a moment of calm, a bit of energy, or just something warm and comforting, tea is always there. And honestly, it might be just what you need too.

For me, making tea isn’t just about the drink itself; it’s about the whole process. Choosing the herbs, watching the water steep, and holding the warm cup in my hands —it’s all part of the ritual. When I’m stressed, chamomile tea helps me feel calm and grounded. On days when I need a little boost, ginger and lemon give me that spark of energy. After a big meal, peppermint tea works wonders to soothe my stomach. And when my body feels achy or inflamed, turmeric tea is like a warm, golden remedy.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 106

Every cup feels like a little act of care, a way to show up for myself and listen to what my body needs. The beautiful thing about tea is that it’s so simple, yet so powerful. It doesn’t take much time, and it doesn’t have to be fancy. You just need a few minutes, some herbs or tea bags, and hot water. In those few moments of steeping, something magical happens. You slow down. You breathe. You’re present. It’s a chance to pause and check in with yourself—something we all need more of in our busy lives. And let’s be honest, there’s just something comforting about holding a warm cup. It’s like a signal to your mind and body that it’s okay to relax, to take a moment for yourself. HOW TO START YOUR OWN TEA RITUAL If this sounds like something you’d love to try, start small. Think about what you need most right now. Do you want to feel calm, energized, or soothed? Pick a tea that matches that feeling. 1.Need calm? Go for chamomile or lavender. 2.Looking for energy? Try ginger or lemon. 3.Want something soothing? Peppermint is a great choice. Once you’ve picked your tea, take your time making it. Notice the colors, the scents, and the warmth in your hands. Let the act of making tea be just as much a part of the ritual as drinking it. Tea reminds me every day that healing and care don’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it’s as simple as sitting down with a warm cup and letting yourself just be. This little ritual has brought so much comfort and joy into my life, and I hope it can do the same for you. So, the next time you’re feeling stressed, tired, or just in need of a moment to yourself, try making a cup of tea. It might just become your favorite self-care ritual too.

MORNING ROUTINE FOR A SUCCESSFUL AND PRODUCTIVE DAY WRITTEN BY MARI DIAZ Everyone’s mornings look different, shaped by different schedules, responsibilities, and lifestyles. Some start the day in quiet solitude, while others jump into action with family or work demands. Regardless of what your mornings look like, building a routine that supports your mind and body can make all the difference. The way you start your morning can shape the rest of your day. Whether your mornings are quiet or packed with responsibilities, creating a routine that supports your mind and body can set you up for success. A productive morning doesn’t mean following a rigid schedule, it’s about finding small, meaningful habits that help you feel focused, energized, and ready to tackle the day ahead. Here are simple steps to build a morning routine that works for you.

1. Wake Up with Intention Instead of rushing out of bed, take a few moments to wake up gently. Use a soft alarm tone, stretch your body, or take a deep breath to start your day with calm and clarity. A peaceful start can help you feel more in control. 2. Get Moving Incorporating movement into your morning, even for a few minutes, can help wake up your body and mind. This could be stretching, light exercise, or simply walking around your home. Movement boosts energy and prepares you for the day ahead. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 108

3. Hydrate First Start your day by drinking a glass of water to rehydrate your body after sleep. Adding a slice of lemon or cucumber can make it feel refreshing and energizing. Staying hydrated improves focus and supports overall well-being. 4. Eat a Balanced Breakfast Fueling your body with a nutritious breakfast helps you stay focused and productive. It doesn’t need to be elaborate, simple options like a smoothie, eggs, or whole-grain toast can provide the energy you need to start strong. 5. Take a Moment for Stillness Whether it’s a minute of deep breathing, a quick meditation, or sitting quietly with your thoughts, stillness can help clear your mind and reduce stress. These small moments of calm can set the tone for a more focused day. 6. Set Daily Intentions Think about what you want to accomplish or how you want to feel during the day. Whether it’s staying organized, being kind, or completing a specific task, setting an intention provides focus and purpose. Writing it down can help reinforce your goal. 7. Limit Morning Distractions Avoid checking emails or scrolling through social media as soon as you wake up. Instead, use the first part of your day for yourself. This helps you maintain a clear and positive mindset before diving into work or responsibilities. 8. Include Something You Enjoy Incorporate a small activity that brings you joy, like sipping your favorite coffee, reading a few pages of a book, or listening to music. These enjoyable moments can brighten your mood and make your morning feel more fulfilling. 9. Adapt to Your Schedule Every day is different, so your morning routine should be flexible. Some mornings you may have time for all your rituals, while others may only allow for one or two. Focus on what works best for you and let go of the need for perfection. 10. Practice Gratitude End your morning routine by reflecting on something you’re thankful for. It could be as simple as appreciating the weather, the people around you, or an opportunity ahead. Gratitude fosters a positive mindset and helps you approach your day with optimism. Your Morning, Your Success A successful morning routine doesn’t have to be complicated, it’s about creating habits that fit into your life and help you feel prepared, focused, and energized. Start small, choosing one or two habits to try, and build from there. With consistency, your mornings can become a powerful tool for a productive and successful day.

Prague Czech Republic

WRITTEN & PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA DIAZ Some cities impress you, and others enchant you. Prague does both. With its medieval charm, red-roofed skyline, and the Vltava River winding through its heart, the Czech capital feels like something out of a storybook. From the haunting beauty of its Gothic cathedrals to the warm glow of its centuries-old pubs, Prague is a city that invites you to lose yourself in its history, one cobblestone street at a time. I had the perfect excuse to visit when I kicked off my 30th birthday trip here in January. It was the first stop of my journey, and Prague set the tone beautifully. Wandering through Old Town with the crisp winter air and fewer crowds made the whole experience feel even more magical—like I had the city’s history all to myself.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 114

And then there’s the Old Jewish Cemetery in Josefov. It’s hauntingly beautiful, with centuries-old gravestones stacked upon one another, each telling a silent story of Prague’s past. Prague is a city best enjoyed one meal (or beer) at a time. Czech cuisine is hearty, comforting, and perfect for fueling a day of exploring. Svíčková – A Czech classic: tender beef in a creamy vegetable sauce, served with bread dumplings and topped with a dollop of whipped cream and cranberry sauce. Vepřo knedlo zelo – The ultimate Czech comfort food: roast pork, fluffy dumplings, and sauerkraut, best enjoyed with a cold Pilsner Urquell (Prague takes its beer seriously!). Goulash – A thick, paprika-rich stew that warms you up on chilly days, paired with—of course—more dumplings. Medovník (Honey Cake) – A traditional Czech dessert made of thin layers of honey-infused sponge cake and creamy caramel filling. Lightly sweet with a delicate texture, it pairs perfectly with a strong cup of coffee.

Start your journey in Old Town Square, the city’s beating heart. Surrounded by pastel-colored buildings, this historic square is where you’ll find Prague’s Astronomical Clock, a mesmerizing medieval wonder that has been marking time since 1410. Every hour, a small crowd gathers to watch the mechanical figures put on a charming, centuries-old show. Cross the legendary Charles Bridge, one of the most picturesque spots in Europe. Flanked by 30 baroque statues, this stone bridge connects Old Town to Prague Castle, offering dreamy views of the river and cityscape along the way. Once you reach Prague Castle, get ready to be transported into another era. More than just a castle, it’s a sprawling complex of historic buildings, including St. Vitus Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece that looms over the city like a guardian from another time.

Prague is beautiful year-round, but January’s quiet charm made my visit magical—crisp air, glowing streetlights, and cozy cafés. Spring and fall bring mild weather and vibrant scenery, while December’s Christmas markets turn the city into a festive wonderland. Public transport is efficient and affordable, but Prague is best explored on foot—where hidden alleys, historic courtyards, and candle-lit cafés create the city’s true magic. Prague was the perfect first stop for my birthday adventure —a city where history feels alive, where every bridge and street tells a story, and where I could soak in the beauty of a place that has stood the test of time. Whether you’re standing on Charles Bridge at sunset, sipping Czech beer in a centuries-old pub, or simply watching the world go by in Old Town Square, Prague will enchant you—and keep calling you back.

For a different perspective, head to Petrin Hill, where a charming funicular ride will take you to one of the best panoramic viewpoints in the city. If you’re up for a climb, the Petrin Lookout Tower—often called Prague’s “mini Eiffel Tower”—offers an even more breathtaking view. Prague isn’t just about grand landmarks—it’s also about the little secrets hiding around every corner. Wandering through the winding streets of Malá Strana (Lesser Town), I found myself in a quiet world of colorful facades, hidden courtyards, and tuckedaway cafés, where it felt like time had slowed down. One of the most unexpected highlights was the John Lennon Wall—a vibrant explosion of street art, poetry, and messages of hope. Originally a place of peaceful rebellion during communist rule, it now serves as a constantly evolving symbol of freedom and creativity.

Vienna

Austria

WRITTEN & PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA DIAZ Vienna isn’t just a place—it’s an experience. This city, once the beating heart of the Habsburg Empire, is where history lingers in grand palaces, where art and music breathe through its streets, and where a cup of coffee is a ritual, not just a drink. Whether you’re here for the Baroque beauty, the rich cultural scene, or simply to indulge in a slice of the original Sachertorte, Vienna will sweep you off your feet. I had the chance to experience it firsthand when I traveled to Vienna this January to celebrate my 30th birthday. There was something magical about wandering through its elegant streets in the crisp winter air, wrapped in the city's old-world charm, with twinkling lights still lingering from the holidays. Vienna in winter is pure enchantment—cozy cafés, grand museums, and the perfect excuse to indulge in as much hot chocolate mit Schlag (whipped cream) as possible.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 116

What’s a visit without indulging in the local flavors? Wiener Schnitzel – Thin, crispy, and golden, this veal cutlet is best enjoyed at places like Figlmüller, known as Vienna’s schnitzel institution. Apfelstrudel – A delicate, flaky pastry filled with warm spiced apples, perfect with a side of vanilla sauce. Tafelspitz – A dish that was once a Habsburg favorite, this boiled beef specialty is comforting and full of flavor. Heuriger Wine Taverns – Vienna is one of the few capitals with its own vineyards! Head to Grinzing or Neustift am Walde, grab a glass of young Austrian wine, and enjoy some live folk music. Vienna shines year-round—with spring and fall offering pleasant weather and December’s Christmas markets adding festive charm. January’s quiet beauty made it the perfect setting for my milestone birthday. Public transport is efficient, but Vienna is best explored on foot, where every cobbled street leads to history, charm, and a cozy café.

Walking through Vienna feels like stepping into a grand, well-kept secret. The Schönbrunn Palace, with its golden-hued façade and endless gardens, is a must. Once the summer escape of emperors, it’s now yours to explore. For something even more central, the Hofburg Palace isn’t just another stunning building— it’s a portal into imperial history. Inside, you’ll find the Sisi Museum, dedicated to Empress Elisabeth, a complex and fascinating figure whose life was anything but the fairytale we imagine.

Vienna is a city that doesn’t just invite you in—it embraces you. It’s where art and history live in harmony, where music drifts through the streets, and where every café visit feels like a moment suspended in time. Whether you're exploring a palace, admiring Klimt’s golden brushstrokes, or savoring that perfect bite of Sachertorte, Vienna promises one thing —it will stay with you long after you leave. For me, it was the perfect place to welcome a new decade of life, wrapped in history, beauty, and a touch of chocolate.

And then, there’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral, rising above the city like a Gothic guardian. Climbing the 343 steps of the South Tower may leave you breathless, but so will the view at the top. In Vienna, coffee isn’t just caffeine—it’s a lifestyle. The city’s cafés are time capsules where you can sit for hours with a newspaper, a slice of cake, and no one rushing you out. Café Central once hosted great minds like Freud and Trotsky, while Café Sperl feels like a scene from a 19th-century novel. And then, there’s the legendary Café Sacher, home to the worldfamous Sachertorte. A slice of this rich chocolate cake, layered with apricot jam and sealed under a perfect dark chocolate glaze, is almost a Viennese rite of passage. Enjoy it with a Melange (Vienna’s answer to a cappuccino) and soak in the oldworld glamour. I had my birthday cake here—because if there’s ever a time to treat yourself to the most famous chocolate cake in the world, it’s when you turn 30 in Vienna. Vienna is an art lover’s paradise, and you don’t have to look far to find something extraordinary. The Belvedere Palacehouses Gustav Klimt’s masterpiece The Kiss, glowing in gold and romance. Meanwhile, the Kunsthistorisches Museumis an absolute treasure chest, with works by Vermeer, Rubens, and Rembrandt. If you love books and history, the Austrian National Library will leave you speechless. Located within the Hofburg, this baroque library is all high ceilings, grand staircases, and endless shelves of ancient books—like something straight out of Beauty and the Beast.
