Her background in Emergency Medicine and Trauma has equipped her to excel in handling catastrophic claims and navigating the complex world of workers' compensation. Marina's journey into the world of workers' compensation was somewhat serendipitous. She began her career as a nurse in the high-pressure environment of Emergency Medicine and Trauma, where every moment counted. It was during this time that she developed a keen sense of empathy and a desire to make a difference in people's lives during their most vulnerable moments. By chance, she had the opportunity to join Presque Isle Rehabilitation for part-time per diem work in case management. This change of pace allowed her to see the other side of injuries, beyond the initial trauma. She could now follow the patient's journey through recovery and play a direct role in their rehabilitation and well-being. Marina's deep-rooted desire to help people led her to embrace the challenges and complexities of the workers' compensation industry. She saw it as an opportunity to guide individuals through what can be a confusing and stressful process, providing them with the support they need at a critical juncture in their lives. As the Executive Vice President of Presque Isle Rehabilitation and the Team Leader for the case management contingent, she manages her own caseload of claimants while leading her team, demonstrating her commitment to hands-on involvement in patient care. What Marina finds most fulfilling about her job is the power to facilitate communication between all parties involved in a claim. The ability to bring together the injured worker, the carrier, the insured, and other stakeholders leads to smoother claim handling and increased satisfaction for everyone. She emphasizes the importance of trust and communication, stating, "During difficult life experiences, that extra touchpoint from a trusted professional really goes a long way in making injured workers feel cared for and closing the gaps between the carrier, insured, and injured party."

One of Marina's most cherished memories as a case manager was witnessing an amputee take his first steps with a prosthetic limb. Marina draws motivation from the knowledge that she is making other people's lives and jobs easier. Outside of her demanding career, Marina finds solace in gardening, baking, reading, and traveling. She is an avid sports fan, particularly when it comes to ice hockey, football, and baseball, and she enjoys attending Philadelphia sporting events whenever possible. Marina's approach to maintaining work-life balance is rooted in organization and prioritization. Marina Edwards' journey from emergency medicine to workers' compensation exemplifies her dedication to making a positive impact on people's lives. Her story is a testament to the power of compassion, communication, and continuous learning in the everevolving landscape of workers' compensation.

Tanya Waters Navigating the Complexities of Risk Management and Fostering Innovation in Workers’ Compensation BLOOM Magazine had the privilege of sitting down with Tanya Waters, Denny’s Director of Risk Management, RIMS-CRMP. Tanya Waters is a woman of many hats, leveraging over 25 years of experience in the insurance industry to manage Denny’s entire SelfInsured Insurance Program for all company-owned restaurants in the United States. Her role involves close collaboration with brokers on coverage placement and with TPAs on claims management, litigation, and vendor management. Additionally, she serves as Secretary for the Western Carolina RIMS Chapter and actively participates in Denny’s DEI Council, chairing the Women’s Leadership Business Resource Group and contributing to the LGBTQ+ Business Resource Group. Reflecting on her extensive career, Tanya shared, "I have been part of the insurance community for 25+ years in various roles on the client side as well as the carrier side. I started my career as a workers’ compensation adjuster and then pivoted to a claims manager role. I continued my insurance path as a risk manager for a grocery store chain and a liability unit manager on the carrier side before joining Denny’s approximately nine years ago." When asked about her favorite part of the job, Tanya responded with enthusiasm, "The people! At Denny’s, we love to feed people—body, mind, and soul." Interestingly, Tanya did not always envision a career in risk management. "No, I took the trade route after high school and obtained a paralegal degree. It landed me a position as a worker’s compensation adjuster, and I learned I loved the interaction with people and assisting them in navigating their claim," she revealed. Success in her role, according to Tanya, requires an inquisitive mindset, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills. One of the most important lessons she has learned over her career is to "lean in when opportunities present themselves. Don’t be afraid to raise your hand and take on a stretch assignment or an opportunity for advancement even when you feel you may not have every qualification needed." A typical week for Tanya involves a multitude of tasks and interactions. "Way too many meetings that could be an email," she joked. "Working closely with my field partners; district managers and human resources on guest and employee incidents. Collaborating with our defense attorneys and TPA on litigation strategy. Ongoing discussions with our broker on renewal strategies. Managing our claim processes to ensure adherence to our service instructions. Lots of interaction with our injured workers and guests." One of the most significant changes she has observed in the field since she started is the abundance of data. "You must know what the data means and how to effectively use it," she emphasized. Currently, one of the major issues keeping industry professionals up at night is cybersecurity. On a more personal note, Tanya revealed, "I appear to many people as an extrovert, but I am very introverted and must work harder in social settings." Despite her cautious nature as an insurance professional, she once braved a cenote during a family vacation in Mexico, describing it as "scary and invigorating all at the same time."

Her best career advice? "Venture outside of your comfort zone." In her downtime, she enjoys spending time with her family—cooking, camping, being outdoors, and enjoying lazy lake and beach days. Starting her day by prioritizing her to-do list, Tanya ensures she has time to breathe and reflect. Despite her adventurous aspirations, such as parasailing, her aversion to heights has kept her grounded. Describing herself as "perfectly imperfect, inquisitive, and kind," Tanya believes her biggest strength is her self-awareness. When meeting someone for the first time, she always notices their smile. One of the most significant learning experiences for Tanya has been overcoming her internal voice that could lead her astray. Balancing work and life, or as she prefers to call it, work/life harmony, involves deciding what is important and being present in those moments. Reflecting on happiness, Tanya shared, "I am lucky enough to say I have had a life of happiness so far; many different chapters and I have enjoyed all of them and look forward to the next." If stranded on a deserted island, Tanya would bring her family, her dogs, and a bottle of expensive champagne. Looking ahead, she believes the industry will evolve significantly in the next five years, blending data science, automation, and artificial intelligence due to the declining interest among youth in insurance careers. Tanya Waters’ journey and insights offer a captivating glimpse into the dynamic field of risk management, highlighting the importance of adaptability, strategic thinking, and the human element in the ever-evolving landscape of the insurance industry.

Joy Taylor Balancing Leadership, Patient Care, and Innovation in Healthcare BLOOM Magazine had the opportunity of sitting down with Joy Taylor, COO of Axion Spine & Neurosurgery. Joy Taylor's journey from corporate litigator to healthcare management is as inspiring as it is impressive. "I began my career as a corporate litigator but followed my heart and ended up in healthcare management, partnering with physicians to run their businesses, and I'm so grateful I did," she shared. Today, Joy serves as the COO of Axion Spine & Neurosurgery, where she is dedicated to improving patient care and streamlining healthcare operations. A typical week for Joy is dynamic and filled with various responsibilities. From managing teams to overseeing expansion projects, her days are busy yet fulfilling. Currently, she is excited about their expansion on the south side of town, which will allow the facility to offer injection services there. "Feeling we have a genuine impact by providing exceptional care and spot-on recommendations that ensure patients get the right care for the right diagnosis—that’s what really motivates me," Joy emphasized, highlighting her commitment to excellence in patient care. Joy's journey into the worker compensation industry was driven by a desire to provide better care for patients. "We saw so many patients who had gotten surgeries they didn't need or didn't get the most appropriate surgery for their condition in a timely manner, and felt like we could help direct care in more appropriate ways," she explained. Over the years, Joy has seen significant changes in the field, particularly the decline of private practice groups, which she believes negatively impacts patient care. "There is also increasing economic pressure, as payers want to pay physicians less, but costs go up every year," she added. Despite the challenges, Joy remains motivated by her belief in conservative spine care. "We are committed to only operating when it is truly needed, and operating no more than is truly needed," she asserted. This philosophy not only ensures patient safety but also promotes trust and integrity within the healthcare system. Joy's favorite productivity hack is setting 30-minute timers and eliminating all distractions during that period. This approach allows her to maximize her efficiency and maintain focus throughout her busy day. Her dedication to productivity is matched by her passion for networking. "Meet everyone with an open heart and try to see where you can help each other," she advised, emphasizing the importance of building and nurturing professional relationships. Reflecting on her career, Joy is most proud of building her group and surgery center. "I believe we have the ultimate destination for the best spine care and the highest level of patient service," she said. Her commitment to excellence and innovation has undoubtedly contributed to her success in the healthcare industry.

As a woman leader, Joy acknowledges the unique challenges she faces but believes that her ability to understand subtle nuances and adapt her communication style has been an asset. "Women are often attuned to layers of subtlety and subtext, and their communication styles tend to be more nuanced and easily modified to suit the situation," she observed. She also stresses the importance of women empowering and supporting each other. "We often see things in each other that we cannot see in ourselves, and holding up that 'mirror' to each other helps us expand our view," she remarked. When it comes to balancing work and home life, Joy admits it's a challenge. "I'm not sure I do!!! But I try hard to create some hard and fast rules. I try not to work much on the weekend, and definitely not before noon on Saturday and not before 5 p.m. on Sunday," she shared. This approach helps her maintain some semblance of balance amidst her demanding schedule. Joy is inspired by the growth of their practice and the beauty of springtime. Her approach to networking and leadership, combined with her dedication to patient care, makes her a remarkable leader in the healthcare industry. As she continues to navigate the challenges and opportunities in her field, Joy Taylor remains a beacon of inspiration and excellence.

Sherrill's journey is a testament to resilience, learning, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. With over two decades of experience, Sherrill has become a respected figure, particularly in TPA oversight, where she excels as a subject matter expert for Safety and the Field. Sherrill’s path to success has been anything but ordinary. Starting her career as a detention officer for the Dallas County Sheriff's Department, she never imagined she would end up in workers' compensation. "I initially began my career as a detention officer and then moved into the utilities industry after having my daughter. It wasn't until I became a Claims Assistant for a TPA that I found my true calling," Sherrill recounts with a warm smile. "Twenty years later, I am still here, and this career has expanded my network, my knowledge, and given me opportunities I never imagined." One of the most fulfilling aspects of Sherrill's job is speaking at conferences and serving as a board member for DFW RIMS. "I love sharing my knowledge and story. Being selected as the 20242026 DFW RIMS Community Director Chair board member is something I am incredibly proud of," she says. Sherrill thrives on the fact that her ideas and suggestions are respected and implemented. "Being part of a talented team that values my input makes every day rewarding," she adds. Sherrill's career is also marked by significant projects, such as her role at FedEx Ground, where she managed the MedCor Nurse line implementation. This project, successfully rolled out to over five hundred locations, resulted in substantial savings for the company. "Being honored to be a part of that project is a highlight of my career," she reflects. Staying updated with the latest trends and best practices in the workers' compensation field is crucial for Sherrill. She achieves this through continuing education, networking, and attending seminars and conferences. Balancing work and personal well-being is equally important to her. "As women, we often put others before ourselves. Over the years, I’ve learned that it’s okay to prioritize my well-being without feeling guilty," she explains. Whether it's a monthly spa day or strictly reserving weekends for family and personal time, Sherrill ensures she takes time for herself. Outside of her professional life, Sherrill finds joy in cooking, volunteering, spending quality time with her family, reading, and binge-watching classic TV shows. Her life has been marked by significant personal loss, having to plan the funerals of her younger sister, mother, and later, her father. "Losing my baby sister and mom is an unexplainable pain that never truly goes away; it only lessens with time. These experiences have taught me to focus on the positives in life," she shares.

Sherrill is also a domestic violence survivor, and speaking publicly about her experiences has been part of her healing process. "Sharing my story has not only helped me heal but also encouraged others to speak up. There’s something profoundly empowering about connecting with others through shared experiences," she says. One of Sherrill’s proudest accomplishments is raising her daughter, who graduated from UNT Denton in 2019 and is now a teacher. Motivated by a former employer's comment that she would never be in management without a degree, Sherrill returned to school and graduated in September 2023 with her bachelor’s degree. "I love sharing my story of perseverance and diversity. It’s never too late to achieve your goals," she says proudly. In August, she will be speaking at the Workers' Compensation Institute (WCI), as a panelist discussing Empathy Toward the Injured Worker. Sherrill Wilson’s story is a testament to the power of dedication, resilience, and continuous learning. Her journey, marked by personal and professional achievements, serves as an inspiration to many in the workers' compensation industry. As she continues to advocate for effective training, employee well-being, and diversity, Sherrill remains a beacon of passion and commitment in her field.

Leanne Galligan A Journey of Dedication and Excellence in Orthopedic Care Interviewed by Mari Diaz Bloom Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Leanne Galligan, the Director of Patient Services at Peachtree Orthopedics. Leanne's career journey, spanning over two decades at Peachtree Orthopedics, is a testament to her dedication and passion. Starting as an administrative assistant and rising to a leadership role, she has become an indispensable part of the Peachtree Orthopedics team. Join us as we get to know Leanne in our "People to Know" feature! Leanne Galligan's journey with Peachtree Orthopedics began in April 1998 when she was hired as an Administrative Assistant to one of the foot and ankle surgeons. Shortly after starting, she was invited to assist the nurse in the clinic, which piqued her interest and set her on a new path. "That sounded interesting, so I said 'Yes!'" she recalls. She became a full-time clinical assistant, earned her Registered Orthopedic Tech (ROT) certification, and supported the surgeon's clinic for 22 years until his retirement in April 2020. During her tenure, Leanne's role expanded. She became a Clinical Supervisor, focusing on Electronic Health Records (EHR) and workflows, and later joined the clinical management team full-time in 2022, with a special focus on COVID protocols and processes. When the Director of Patient Services position became available in 2022, Leanne took a leap of faith, applied, and was thrilled to receive the role, embracing it with both excitement and nervous energy. Leanne's entry into healthcare was somewhat serendipitous. "I truly fell into the healthcare field. I moved to Atlanta in June 1996 after graduating from Michigan State University (Go Green!) and was encouraged to take temp jobs at first while I figured out the city and where I wanted to live and work," she shares. "Anyone who has had to drive in Atlanta traffic can attest to the importance of this!" Her first assignment at a neurology practice sparked a passion for healthcare, as she enjoyed the focus on helping people improve their health. After 2.5 years, she sought a larger company and found her place at Peachtree Orthopedics. Over the years, she developed a deep interest in orthopedics, particularly the complexities of foot and ankle injuries, finding joy in seeing patients recover and return to their daily activities. "I have grown to love orthopedics and especially the disorders and range of injuries that can happen to the foot and ankle. It is truly fascinating," she shares. As the Director of Patient Services, Leanne finds fulfillment in two main aspects of her role. Firstly, she is dedicated to making it easy for patients to access the care they need, encouraging her team to "Be the solution" and find answers rather than saying no. Secondly, she takes great joy in supporting the young, entry-level staff in the Patient Services department, helping them grow professionally and succeed. "To receive feedback from the staff that they feel seen, supported, acknowledged, and heard is the absolute best," she says.

Outside of her professional role, Leanne's life is equally busy and fulfilling. She has been married since 2015 to her husband, who moved from Ireland. In June 2019, they became foster parents to a sibling group of three children, aged 8, 4, and 3 weeks. The sudden change necessitated the purchase of a minivan and brought a whirlwind of activity into their lives. They adopted the children in April 2021 and now enjoy a busy schedule filled with soccer, gymnastics, school, and playdates. When she finds a moment to herself, Leanne enjoys spending time with friends over laughter-filled meals, watching soccer with her husband, traveling, or playing tennis. Reflecting on her career, Leanne recalls a memorable moment from the past year when a manager told her she was "the perfect person for the role" she was in. This compliment had a significant impact on her and is something she cherishes. Throughout her journey, several mentors have influenced her. Dr. Beskin, her initial supervisor, provided invaluable knowledge and understanding of orthopedics. Connie Whittington, RN, taught her the importance of flexibility and collaboration, famously saying, "Blessed are the flexible, for they shall never get bent out of shape." Erika Noll, the current COO and her boss, guided her through the transition from clinical team member to management, teaching her the value of pausing and reflecting before responding.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 28

Lastly, Leanne's mother instilled in her the importance of continuous learning and personal growth. "You don’t have to respond immediately… it is okay to pause and reflect," Leanne notes, reflecting on Erika's advice. Leanne believes that essential qualities for success in healthcare include listening more than talking, showing compassion, following through on commitments, and knowing when to seek help from others. She strives to embody these qualities in her daily work, ensuring that patients receive the best possible care and support. "Listen more than you talk, show compassion, do what you say you are going to do, and know what you know and when you need to phone a friend," she advises. Peachtree Orthopedics is committed to making it easy for patients to access the care they need. The organization focuses on providing excellent customer service and superb medical care, ensuring that patients feel welcomed and valued. This commitment to patient satisfaction is reflected in the organization's motto and the dedicated efforts of the staff. "We strive to make it EASY to access the care our patients need and focus on helping them get better and back to doing what they love," Leanne emphasizes. Looking ahead, Peachtree Orthopedics aims to expand its reach in Georgia while maintaining its high-quality care. Leanne sees her role evolving to support this growth, ensuring that new locations are warm, welcoming, and efficient for patients. "We are focused on growing the business to better reach the expanding communities of Georgia while keeping the quality of care at the excellent level we are known for," she explains.

Leanne advises those interested in healthcare administration to learn about the various aspects of the business, consider the impact of changes on different departments, and walk through processes from the patient's perspective. Flexibility is crucial in this constantly evolving field, and adapting to changes is essential for success. "Be flexible. It is a field that is constantly evolving, and you need to be able to adapt with it to be successful," she advises. Peachtree Orthopedics stands out in handling workers' compensation cases by offering a concierge level of service through a dedicated department. Tracy Mosley, the workers' compensation manager, has been with the company for almost 20 years and has developed strong relationships with employers and adjusters, providing a personal touch that sets them apart in the orthopedic community. "Tracy Mosley has worked hard in developing relationships with the employers and adjusters that make us unique," Leanne says. Effective communication is key in managing workers' compensation claims. Peachtree Orthopedics ensures dedicated resources are available to all parties involved and strives to provide required documents promptly. Leanne emphasizes the importance of compassion and understanding the broader impact of an injury on the patient's life. "I always try to remember that for the injured worker, there is more involved than just the injury," she reflects. Leanne concludes with a reminder to view injured workers holistically, considering their concerns about returning to work and supporting their families. She also highlights the value of case managers as resources and encourages easy communication channels. "It will help everyone if you have easy ways for them to reach you and for you to reach them," she advises. For further inquiries, Leanne can be reached by email at lgalligan@pocatlanta.com or by phone at 404-350-4755. Peachtree Orthopedics' website, www.pocatlanta.com, is also a valuable resource for information. Through her dedication, compassion, and leadership, Leanne Galligan exemplifies the commitment to excellence that defines Peachtree Orthopedics. Her journey is an inspiration to many in the healthcare industry, and her story is a testament to the impact of passion and perseverance.

Samantha Julias Leading Vero Orthopaedics with Dedication and Vision Bloom Magazine had the pleasure of speaking with Samantha L. Julias, the Chief of Finance and Strategy at Vero Orthopaedics. Samantha's career journey, from her beginnings as an athletic trainer to her current leadership role, is a testament to her dedication and passion. Her diverse experiences and unwavering commitment to healthcare have made her an indispensable part of the Vero Orthopaedics team. Join us as we get to know Samantha in our "People to Know" feature! Samantha started her career with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Florida Southern College. She worked in various settings like action sports, physical therapy, high school sports, and in a physician’s clinic. While she was working as an athletic trainer, she also took on a part-time role in a physician’s office. She found that environment much more engaging because there were always new problems to solve and things to learn. However, transitioning fully to the office setting wasn’t easy because people didn’t take her seriously as an athletic trainer. That’s what motivated her to pursue her master’s in health services administration from the University of Central Florida. During her master’s program, Samantha did a fulltime internship at Orlando Orthopaedic Center. A couple of years later, they had an opening for an office manager, and she got the opportunity to help them open a new walk-in clinic and physician’s office. Just two months after the office opened, they promoted her. Her time at Orlando Ortho allowed her to grow in various areas like marketing, business development, ancillary services, professional services, accounts receivable, and accounts payable. Eventually, she became the CFO there. Later, Samantha joined Vero Orthopaedics as the Director of Finance and Business Development, and within four months, she was promoted to Chief of Finance and Strategy. Now, she oversees accounts receivable, accounts payable, business development, organizational strategy, and marketing.

Growing up, Samantha was really into sports and had a strong interest in anatomy and physiology. Athletic training felt like the perfect blend of those two passions. She loves the analytical aspect of her job, whether it's operationally reviewing processes to make them more efficient or determining the best way to implement a new project. On the financial side, she enjoys analyzing whether a new product or venture is a smart business decision and examining finances to see where improvements can be made. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 34

Samantha's dedication and innovative approaches are making a significant difference in patient care and the workers' compensation industry. We look forward to seeing the continued success and growth of Vero Orthopaedics.

Outside of her professional role, Samantha loves being outdoors and staying active. Exercise is a constant in her life —it really helps her stay sane. She also enjoys gardening, hiking, and sailing with her fiancé. For Samantha, it's been about the trust and faith people have put in her. She's had incredible support and encouragement, which has motivated her to keep growing and developing in this field. Now, she tries to give back by mentoring younger or newer colleagues and by joining committees like the Young and New Professionals through AAOE. Flexibility and problem-solving are key qualities for success in healthcare. Healthcare is always changing, with new policies and laws coming into effect. Samantha strives not to jump to conclusions. Instead, she assesses and processes the facts, and if she’s unsure, she reaches out to peers or does some research to find the solution. Vero Orthopaedics ensures patients have smooth access to orthopedic care by making it easy for patients to schedule appointments by calling or booking online. If they have an urgent need, they can walk in without an appointment. For non-urgent matters, they guarantee same-day appointments if contacted before 3 pm. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 35

Did you know that (OM) doctors can tour your facilities and make recommendations for a safer office environment? OM doctors specialize in the prevention and treatment of work-related injuries and illnesses. They have the expertise to identify potential hazards in the workplace and suggest ways to mitigate those risks. One way that OM doctors can help improve the safety of your office is by conducting a tour of your facilities. During the tour, they will assess the layout of the workplace, the equipment being used, and the overall working conditions. They will look for any potential hazards that could cause accidents or injuries, such as tripping hazards, electrical issues, or exposure to hazardous substances. Based on their observations, OM doctors can then make recommendations for improving the safety of the workplace. These recommendations might include installing safety guards on machinery, improving lighting and ventilation, or providing protective equipment for employees. In addition to conducting tours, OM doctors can also arrange for on-site employee seminars. These seminars can cover a variety of topics, such as ergonomics, workplace safety, and healthy living. By educating employees on how to stay safe and healthy on the job, you can help reduce the risk of accidents and injuries in the workplace.

MY WORKERS' COMPENSATION We asked the industry leaders and physicians what their Workers' Compensation philosophy is, and here's what they had to say.

PHILOSOPHY BLOOM MAGAZINE | 42

Carlos Ayestas VP Client Relations, Priority Transportation & Language Services My workers' compensation philosophy is rooted in empathy and understanding for injured workers during their vulnerable times. In providing transportation services, we bridge the gap for those who may not grasp the WC process, particularly non-English speakers. Our role as an ancillary provider is to facilitate appointments and support claim closure through consistent delivery on our commitments and transparent communication with clients and injured workers.

Sandy Avina Claims Services Manager, California Schools JPA (CSRM) In workers' comp, we focus too much on the big ugly claims. The claims where we suspect fraud and abuse take up so much of our mental space, but the majority of claims have happy endings! My workers' compensation philosophy is why aren't we spending more time talking about all of the Medical Only claims that are closed? Or all the employees who return to work full duty? These are success stories! As an industry, we need to take more time to celebrate the successes and show injured workers how proud we are that they achieved a successful recovery. After all, isn't that the goal?

Kimberly Hunter Medical Only Adjuster, Relation Insurance My worker's compensation philosophy is to foster a supportive environment for the injured worker while effectively managing claims.

Chikita Mann Senior Telephonic Case Manager, Genex Services My worker compensation philosophy ensures comprehensive, compassionate care for injured workers through a biopsychosocial approach. I consider biological, psychological, and social factors, emphasizing collaboration among healthcare providers, employers, insurers, and the injured worker. Recognizing the impact of family support, work environment, and financial stability, I prioritize research-backed treatments and stay current with advancements. As an advocate, I ensure the injured worker's needs and rights are respected within the workers' compensation system. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 43

Matt Tarzon Rehabilitation Services Regional Manager, Bommerang Healthcare My workers' compensation philosophy is state worker's compensation should be here to help injured workers return to their lives as quickly as possible. To get them the treatments needed as quickly as possible. To use all available treatments available that carry as minimal risk to the patient.

Joy Taylor COO, Axion Spine & Neurosurgery My workers' compensation philosophy is to set the tone from the beginning! We believe that everyone is happier and healthier when they are working, and we are determined to get them back to contributing in their workplace.

Danielle Stella Risk Manager, City Furniture My workers' compensation philosophy is rooted in compassion, fairness, empathy, and education. Compassion drives me to approach every interaction with kindness. Fairness ensures equal access to medical treatment and resources. Empathy helps me understand diverse perspectives and respond sensitively. Educating injured workers empowers them to advocate for themselves. These principles shape my daily interactions and contributions.

Ahmed Saleh, MD A LEADER IN ORTHOPEDIC SPINE SURGERY HOW DO YOU PRIORITIZE COMMUNICATION AND ACCESSIBILITY WHEN WORKING WITH INJURED WORKERS? Dr. Saleh: I help patients navigate the system and paperwork involved with workers' compensation treatment. After examining and treating the patient, I fill out the required DWC forms in the room with them. I explain each part of the form, its meaning, and discuss goals and plans for the next visit. Ensuring that patients understand their treatment, goals, and any work restrictions is paramount. I also explain what MMI (Maximum Medical Improvement) means and when we can expect to achieve it based on the treatment plan. HOW DO YOU PRIORITIZE GETTING INJURED WORKERS BACK TO WORK SAFELY AND EFFICIENTLY WHILE STILL PROVIDING THEM WITH QUALITY CARE THROUGHOUT THEIR RECOVERY PROCESS?

Southeast Orthopedic Specialists, where Dr. Ahmed Saleh practices, is renowned for its excellence in workers' compensation. The practice has been recognized as a top choice for employers seeking reliable and effective medical services for their injured workers. As part of the esteemed team at Southeast Orthopedic Specialists, Dr. Ahmed excels in his field and has become a trusted name in workers' compensation. The practice itself has gained recognition for its commitment to excellence, consistently providing high-quality care for injured workers. In this interview, we had the opportunity to talk with Dr. Ahmed Saleh. We hope you enjoy getting to know Dr. Saleh. WHAT IS YOUR SPECIALTY? Dr. Saleh: My specialty is Orthopedic Spine Surgery.

Dr. Saleh: Navigating the healthcare system can be difficult and stressful, especially with the added complexity of workers' compensation. My goal is for patients to go through the treatment system without interruptions or delays, just like any other patients. This requires a large team dedicated to workers' compensation, which we have at Southeast Orthopedic Specialists. I am always happy to converse with case adjusters to explain my plan of care and expedite treatment for my patients. ARE THERE ANY NEW TECHNOLOGIES OR TREATMENTS THAT YOU HAVE RECENTLY INCORPORATED INTO YOUR PRACTICE FOR THE BENEFIT OF INJURED WORKERS? Dr. Saleh: One of the biggest breakthroughs in spinal surgery over the past several years is the ability to navigate instrumentation. If a patient requires screws to be placed as part of their procedure, we can now use CT-guided navigation for safer and more accurate placement. This technology allows for smaller incisions and quicker recovery in many cases.

Jose Ortega, MD RETURNING INJURED WORKERS TO OPTIMAL HEALTH AND PRODUCTIVITY Dr. Ortega: My research focuses on improving surgical techniques and outcomes for patients undergoing shoulder and knee repairs. I’ve presented numerous lectures at national and international conferences, sharing my findings on advanced arthroscopic procedures and regenerative medicine. This continuous exchange of knowledge helps us refine our techniques and adopt the latest, evidence-based practices to ensure the highest quality of care. Bloom Magazine: How do you approach treating injured workers, and what are your priorities when managing their care? Dr. Ortega: Treating injured workers requires a comprehensive and tailored approach. My priorities are to accurately diagnose the injury, provide effective treatment options, and develop a personalized rehabilitation plan. I emphasize clear communication with the patient and their employer to ensure everyone understands the recovery process and expected outcomes. The goal is to help the injured worker return to their job as quickly and safely as possible, minimizing downtime and promoting a full recovery. Bloom Magazine: What role does patient education play in your practice, particularly for workers' compensation cases? Bloom Magazine: Dr. Ortega, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. Can you start by telling us a bit about your background and what led you to specialize in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine? Dr. Ortega: Thank you, it's my pleasure. My journey into orthopedic surgery and sports medicine began during my medical training at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. I was always fascinated by the mechanics of the human body and how we can repair and improve its function, especially in athletes and active individuals. My fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation further solidified my interest, where I specialized in arthroscopic reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and knee. Bloom Magazine: That sounds like an impressive background. Could you tell us more about your areas of expertise and the types of procedures you commonly perform? Dr. Ortega: Certainly. My areas of expertise include arthroscopic rotator cuff and instability repairs, knee ligament reconstruction, and management of meniscal and cartilage injuries. I also focus on non-invasive treatment options for shoulder and knee arthritis. Additionally, I utilize regenerative medicine technology for treating arthritis and soft tissue injuries, which has been a significant advancement in providing effective care for my patients. Bloom Magazine: Regenerative medicine sounds fascinating. How do you incorporate it into your practice, and what benefits have you seen for your patients? Dr. Ortega: Regenerative medicine involves using the body’s own healing mechanisms to repair damaged tissues. In my practice, I use techniques such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy to enhance the body’s natural healing processes. These treatments have shown excellent results in reducing pain, improving function, and often delaying the need for more invasive procedures like surgery. Bloom Magazine: As someone deeply involved in orthopedic research, can you share some insights into your recent work and how it contributes to improving patient care?

Dr. Ortega: Patient education is crucial, especially in workers' compensation cases. I strive to help my patients fully understand their condition, the treatment options available, and the expected outcomes. This knowledge empowers them to make informed decisions about their care and promotes adherence to the treatment plan. Educated patients are more likely to engage in their recovery process, which can lead to better outcomes and a quicker return to work. Bloom Magazine: How do you stay current with the latest advancements in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine? Dr. Ortega: Staying current with the latest advancements is essential for providing the highest quality of care. I regularly attend national and international conferences, participate in continuing medical education courses, and collaborate with colleagues in research projects. Additionally, I am a member of several professional organizations, such as the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, which provide access to the latest research and best practices in the field. Bloom Magazine: It’s clear that you’re dedicated to providing the highest quality of care for your patients. What do you believe sets your practice apart from others in the field? Dr. Ortega: I believe it’s a combination of advanced surgical techniques, commitment to ongoing research, and a personalized approach to patient care. Being bilingual and fully fluent in both English and Spanish also allows me to connect with a broader range of patients and ensure they fully understand their treatment options. My goal is always to help injured workers and athletes return to their activities with the highest level of function and quality of life. Bloom Magazine: Dr. Ortega, thank you for sharing your insights with us today. Your dedication to advancing orthopedic care and helping patients recover is truly inspiring. Dr. Ortega: Thank you, it's been a pleasure speaking with you and sharing a bit about my practice.

Nathaniel Hill, MD, FAAOS CHAMPIONING RECOVERY FOR INJURED WORKERS THROUGH ORTHOPEDIC EXCELLENCE Prioritizing a safe and efficient return to work is a key aspect of Dr. Hill's treatment strategy. "We discuss the nature of their injury, as well as the activities and requirements of their job," he shared. "Even though they return to work, they may need to continue a treatment protocol." This thorough understanding helps tailor treatment plans that align with each worker's job demands while ensuring quality care.

Nathaniel H. Hill, MD, FAAOS, a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon and Partner at South Florida Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, has dedicated his career to restoring the health and functionality of injured workers. With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Hill's expertise spans both surgical and non-operative management of orthopedic disorders, with a special focus on knee and shoulder injuries. Dr. Hill's medical journey began at the University of Miami School of Medicine, followed by rigorous surgical internships and an orthopedic residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. His comprehensive training equipped him with the skills to handle a wide range of orthopedic issues in both adults and children. When asked about his specialty, Dr. Hill confidently stated, "Orthopedic Surgery." Over two decades, he has honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of the complexities involved in treating work-related injuries. His philosophy is clear and patient-centered: "My intention is to get them back to their pre-injury level of function." Dr. Hill emphasizes the importance of communication in his practice. "Good communication starts at the first visit," he explained. "We discuss what happened, their diagnosis, and the treatment plans. I want the patient leaving each visit with a clear idea of the treatment plan and the next step." This approach ensures that injured workers are well-informed and actively involved in their recovery process.

Dr. Hill also stays informed of new technologies and treatments to enhance recovery. "We offer PRP injections to appropriate candidates if other modalities have not produced the desired outcome," he said. This innovative approach is part of his commitment to providing the best possible care. However, the workers' compensation system is not without its challenges. "I would like to speed up the approval process for PT, MRIs, and surgical approvals," Dr. Hill mentioned. Streamlining these processes would significantly benefit injured workers by reducing delays in their treatment. For seamless communication with adjusters, employers, or nurses, Dr. Hill ensures comprehensive and clear documentation. "We have a dedicated Workers' Compensation liaison in both of our offices," he noted. This dedicated support system enhances the coordination of care and facilitates efficient communication. Dr. Hill's dedicated commitment to his patients' recovery, coupled with his expertise and innovative approach, makes him a pillar of support for injured workers. Family Legacy and Future Vision A CONVERSATION WITH OZZY DIAZ, OPERATIONS DIRECTOR AT OM OM, a company deeply rooted in the workers' compensation industry, has grown to become a national leader in connecting the best doctors with claims professionals. Founded by Ozzy Diaz Sr. and Mari Diaz in 2004, OM has continuously innovated and expanded its services, empowering physicians nationwide. At the heart of their approach is their dedication to being a reliable resource for employers, adjusters, and nurses. In this interview, Ozzy Diaz, the Operations Director and son of the founders, gives us an inside look into the company's journey, its impact on the industry, and its future direction. Anailis Diaz: Hi Ozzy, thank you for joining us today. Can you start by telling us a little about your role at OM and what you do here? Ozzy Diaz: Absolutely, thank you for having me. As the Operations Director at OM, I oversee the day-to-day operations of our company, ensuring everything runs smoothly and efficiently. This includes coordinating with our team, managing projects, and maintaining the high standards of service that our clients have come to expect from us. It's a role I deeply value, especially being part of the family legacy started by my parents, Ozzy Diaz Sr. and Mari Diaz. Anailis Diaz: OM has a fascinating history. Can you share with us how the company started and what inspired its creation? Ozzy Diaz: The story of OM began in 2004 when my parents, Ozzy Diaz Sr. and Mari Diaz, discovered a significant communication gap between all the players involved in the care of injured employees. Physicians were excellent in their field but often struggled with the paperwork involved in the workers' compensation system. They made it their mission to bridge this gap and become the connecting link between doctors, employers, and insurance companies, empowering physicians to become the go-to specialists for employers looking for the best care for their injured workers.

Ozzy Diaz, Operations Director Mari Diaz, CEO & Founder Anailis Diaz: How did your parents manage to establish OM as a leader in this field? Ozzy Diaz: With dedication and strong ethics, OM quickly became the go-to for claims professionals seeking the best doctors who are the most qualified and understand the paperwork process needed when seeing injured workers. Our rapid growth led us to establish the WorkCompReady™ certification in 2010, which provides education, training, and continuous support to hundreds of doctors. This certification and our OM Directory, at the time a print resource, became industry standards of excellence. By 2020, OM had expanded to become a national company and we launched our online directory, which is endorsed by many national employers and carriers who are looking for the best doctors. This further solidified our presence in the industry. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 60

OM Anailis Diaz: OM also has the Bloom Awards. Can you tell us about their significance in the industry? Ozzy Diaz: The Bloom Awards, formerly known as the IN TOUCH Awards, were created in 2011 to recognize excellence in the workers' compensation industry. For the past 13 years, these awards have celebrated the best professionals in the field and become a staple event in the workers' compensation community. The gala attracts over 200 adjusters, case managers, and risk managers nationwide, earning it the nickname "The Academy Awards" of the workers' compensation world. Unfortunately, in 2020, we had to put our annual gala on hold due to Covid. This year, we are excited to bring the gala back on December 11th at the Orlando Science Center. We can't wait to celebrate and see everyone come out! Anailis Diaz: What changes did OM make in 2022 to further improve its services? Ozzy Diaz: In 2022, we realized the need for better access to the WorkCompReady™ certification and a faster way for employers and adjusters to find certified doctors. We spoke with clients and industry professionals to enhance our directory and training programs. Additionally, we created the OM Best Doctors in Workers' Compensation list, recognizing doctors who are highly skilled and experienced in providing the best care available so patients can return to work safely. Anailis Diaz: How does OM empower physicians and their staff within the workers' compensation system? Ozzy Diaz: OM empowers physicians by providing them with the necessary tools, training, and support to excel in the workers' compensation system. Our WorkCompReady™ certification is the gold standard in the industry, offering comprehensive education and training to ensure doctors are well-versed in managing workers' compensation cases. By becoming WorkCompReady™ certified, physicians and their staff gain a deep understanding of the workers' compensation process, making them the go-to providers for employers looking for qualified specialists

Anailis Diaz: Can you tell us more about the services OM provides to support employers and adjusters? Ozzy Diaz: OM serves as the vital link for streamlined communication between our doctors, employers, adjusters, and case managers. Our fast-track team efficiently handles needs such as work status updates, necessary forms, MCC letters, follow-up appointments, and stat appointments, all free of charge. We also provide custom doctor panels tailored to the specific needs of employers, ensuring they have access to the best specialists in their geographical area. Anailis Diaz: How does OM maintain quality assurance and ensure continuous improvement? ERMI specializes in at-home devices that help restore motion in joints like shoulders, knees, and elbows. Kazlene will share how ERMI got started, their mission, and the unique benefits of their products. We'll also learn why adjusters and case managers should consider ERMI for their patients. Let's get to know Kazlene and the amazing work ERMI is doing! CAN YOU DESCRIBE WHAT ERMI DOES AND THE CORE SERVICES/PRODUCTS YOU OFFER? We help physicians, adjusters and nurse case managers who are frustrated when an injured worker may need a secondary, motionrestoring surgery; when they have been in therapy for more visits than a normal recovery protocol; when they have hit a plateau in their range of motion rehabilitation. We treat motion-loss in shoulder, knee, ankle, elbow, forearm, wrist or great toe by deploying an at-home device for the patient to use every day to restore their range of motion and accelerate their recovery. By using the Ermi Flexionater or Extensionater daily, the patient is breaking up scar tissue that is holding them back and preventing them from returning to work. WHAT ARE ERMI'S VISION, MISSION, VALUES, AND CULTURE? Our mission is to help individuals accelerate the recovery of motion loss due to joint stiffness and return them to full human performance. WHY SHOULD ADJUSTERS AND CASE MANAGERS CHOOSE ERMI? WHAT UNIQUE BENEFITS DO YOUR PRODUCTS/SERVICES PROVIDE? We have treated more than 150,000 patients and have greater than 90% success in restoring range of motion and preventing secondary surgery within 90 days time. Compared to alternative devices, we are saving about $8,600 per patient. Visit our website to see the data. HOW DOES ERMI HELP FACILITATE A FASTER RETURN TO WORK FOR INJURED WORKERS? By implementing the Ermi Flexionater or Extensionater at home, it allows the injured worker to stretch the affected joint every day, thus accelerating recovery. They are out of therapy faster; they are placed at MMI faster; they are back to work faster.

Kazlene Seide District Manager and Medical Sales Leader

WHAT ARE THE TOP THREE THINGS THAT SET ERMI APART FROM YOUR COMPETITORS? The Ermi Flexionater and Extensionater offers a variable load, so whether the physicians’ recovery philosophy is low and slow or high intensity to create the change in the joint capsule, we can tailor the stretch to your desire. Our devices are “sit and stretch” meaning your patients will not have to apply or wear an uncomfortable or heavy device for hours at a time - just a few 10 minute stretch sessions per day will get them back to work quickly! Accelerating the recovery of an injured worker means you’ll save money on many more months of therapy, other company’s sometimes 8-10 month brace rentals, which means even more lost wages and sometimes another surgery. Key Strategies for Supporting Workers' Compensation Adjusters Working as a workers' compensation adjuster has its challenges, with the responsibility of managing numerous files across different jurisdictions without dedicated support staff. Employers and stakeholders play a vital role in supporting these adjusters to ensure their success. By implementing specific actions, valuable assistance can be provided to significantly ease adjusters' workload and enhance their effectiveness. To support workers' compensation adjusters effectively, consider the following key actions: 1. Provide Complete and Detailed Information: When submitting a new claim, ensure all fields on the injury form are accurately filled out. This includes relevant details such as social security numbers, birth dates, injury types, and dates of injury reporting. By providing comprehensive and timely information upfront, you enable adjusters to initiate efficient investigations.

2. Report Claims Promptly: Timely reporting of claims is essential to avoid pressuring adjusters and minimize errors or leakage. Submit the injury report as soon as possible to facilitate thorough investigations and enable accurate decision-making without delays or penalties. 3. Communicate Lost Time: Promptly inform adjusters if there is any lost time associated with the claim. This information is crucial as it allows adjusters to gather relevant medical records, assess compensability, and facilitate the implementation of work restrictions.

The Other Side of the Claim Mental Health Challenges for Workers' Compensation Adjusters Written by Sandy Avina What is compassion fatigue? People whose professions lead to prolonged exposure to other people's trauma can be vulnerable to compassion fatigue, also known as secondary or vicarious trauma; they can experience acute symptoms that put their physical and mental health at risk, making them wary of giving and caring. (Psychology Today, 2024) Why is it important? Compassion fatigue affects our industry in two ways: First, claims adjusters already face tremendous demands in their jobs. Our industry is struggling to recruit and retain the next generation of adjusters, which means adjusters in their current roles are likely facing high caseloads and understaffed departments. Adding compassion fatigue to the existing demands of the job is a recipe for burnout.

I remember the first time I cried as an adjuster. I had just gotten off the phone with a woman whose husband had fallen two stories down an elevator shaft. Miraculously, he survived the fall, but his injuries were the most significant I had seen. I had received his claim a few weeks prior and had already started disability benefits and assigned a catastrophic case manager. His wife had missed several days from work to be by his side at the hospital.

Second, the helplessness adjusters feel when they are handling particularly catastrophic injuries contributes to compassion fatigue. Adjusters can become jaded, reducing their ability to empathize. It’s not that adjusters want to be unfeeling, but many disengage as a self-preservation method. This results in a poor experience for the injured worker, who relies heavily on an adjuster to provide communication, patience, and guidance as they navigate the challenges arising out of their disability.

They had a 6-month-old baby, and she had just returned to work a few weeks before his accident. She was terminated for missing too many days from work and didn’t qualify for FMLA. “Is there anything else you can do to help us?” I explained the disability benefits, and that medical treatment would be covered, but I was afraid this was such a small and hollow offering against the enormity of her fears. She was sobbing. I could hear her baby crying in the background. Behind every workers' compensation claim lies a hidden toll on the adjusters who, witnessing the aftermath of injury and disability for injured workers, face their own mental health battles arising from compassion fatigue.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 68

WHAT CAN WE DO? Support from the industry Third Party Administrators, insurers, and vendor partners have an opportunity to partner with non-profits and advocacy groups to identify and consolidate information on public resources: food banks, discounts on public transportation, free or low-cost mental health resources, free meals for children at public libraries, etc. Injured workers and their families often seek assistance from adjusters on how to deal with impacts from their disability that fall outside of the scope of workers’ compensation benefits. Having a resource page on the company website will help prevent adjusters from feeling helpless when injured workers approach them with questions related to needs and support outside of workers’ comp. This helps injured workers identify solutions for some of the challenges resulting from their disability. Support for Claims Leaders Claims leaders need to be trained on how to identify precursors to compassion fatigue and burnout among their adjusters. Adjusters should be advised and encouraged to completely disconnect when they are off work. Discourage adjusters from providing vendors, attorneys, clients and injured workers with their personal cell phone number. Our industry is notorious for this practice, and it is not sustainable. Claims leaders should be experts on their company’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and reference it regularly in meetings with their team. Support for Adjusters Several claims training programs cover the statutory component of claims handling: calculating disability benefits, determining compensability, addressing disputes regarding treatment authorization, etc. Here’s what’s missing: how to manage the social-emotional component of claims handling. Do adjusters know how to handle a call when someone is crying? How about if someone mentions self-harm? If they are assigned a claim that deals with a particular trauma, they have experienced themselves, do they know they can have a conversation with leadership to discuss possible reassignment? These topics should be included in any comprehensive claims training program and provided as an annual refresher to all adjusters.

Occupational Heat Exposure: Risks, Treatment, and Prevention Written by Chikita Mann

Every year, dozens of workers suffer from heat exposure in the workplace, and tragically, some even lose their lives. Whether indoors or outdoors, during any season, hazardous heat can pose serious risks. It is crucial to understand the factors contributing to heat illness, recognize symptoms, and implement preventive measures. What is Heat Illness? As temperatures rise, a worker’s core body temperature may also increase. The body naturally responds by increasing heart rate and inducing sweating to regulate temperature. However, when these mechanisms fail to prevent excessive heat buildup, heat illness occurs. It’s essential to recognize and respond promptly to symptoms to prevent medical emergencies. Types of Heat Illness Heat illnesses span a spectrum, from minor heat cramps to life-threatening heat stroke. Early intervention reduces the risk of severe outcomes. Training workers to recognize symptoms and take immediate action is vital. Employers must prioritize worker safety by ensuring protection from hazardous heat.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 72

Recognizing Heat Illness Early intervention is critical. If you notice any of the following symptoms, act promptly: Heat Stroke Warning Signs: Abnormal thinking or behavior Slurred speech Seizures Fainting Heavy sweating or hot, dry skin Immediate Actions: Call 911 immediately. Cool the worker with water or ice. Move them to a cooler or shaded area. Stay with the worker until help arrives. Other Heat Illness Symptoms: Headache or nausea Weakness or dizziness Elevated body temperature Thirst Decreased urine output Recommended Actions: Provide cool water to drink. Remove unnecessary clothing. Relocate to a cooler area. Use water, ice, or a fan for cooling. Do not leave the affected person alone. Seek medical care if necessary.

Occupational Risk Factors Both the work environment and specific tasks contribute to heat exposure risks: Environmental Factors: Temperature and humidity levels Proximity to heat sources Direct sunlight exposure Work-Related Factors: Length of time near heat sources Physical exertion Personal protective equipment (PPE) that affects heat dissipation Prevention Strategies A comprehensive heat stress program includes: Risk Assessment: Evaluate workplace conditions and identify high-risk areas. Implement preventive measures based on risk levels. Limit Heat Exposure: Schedule work during cooler hours. Rotate tasks to minimize continuous exposure. Provide rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Reduce Metabolic Heat Load: Adjust workloads during extreme heat. Encourage hydration and proper nutrition. Acclimation: Gradually expose workers to heat to build tolerance. Training: Educate workers on heat stress symptoms and emergency procedures. Remember, preventing heat-related illnesses is everyone’s responsibility. By prioritizing safety, we can protect workers and create healthier workplaces.

REIMAGINING CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME TREATMENT FOR BETTER OUTCOMES AND FASTER, SAFER RETURN TO WORK PAUL PATERSON, MD

In a recent interview with Dr. Paul Paterson, his dedication to improving patient outcomes and accessibility through same-day, ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release became evident. This innovative procedure is not only cost-effective but also has the potential to significantly improve patient outcomes and facilitate faster return-to-work times, making it truly game-changing. "Patient care is always our primary goal," Dr. Paterson emphasizes. "Our ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release procedure is designed to streamline care by compressing multiple visits into a single one. This means patients can be diagnosed and treated during their initial visit. Most return to light office work the next day and heavy-duty work within five days, thanks to the minimally invasive nature of this procedure."

Employers have come to trust Dr. Paterson for his excellence in rapidly getting employees back to work. His approach eliminates the need for an electromyography (EMG) and avoids conservative treatments that merely address symptoms without solving the problem. "We aim to resolve the underlying issue effectively," he says. "This approach leads to less frustration for injured workers and significantly better long-term outcomes." The success rate of his method speaks volumes. "Ninety percent of patients who undergo ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release return to work within 10 days, and less than five percent require therapy afterward," Dr. Paterson reports. "This high success rate not only benefits patients but also reduces long-term care costs by 50-75%." BLOOM MAGAZINE | 74

Accessibility to treatment is a cornerstone of Dr. Paterson's practice. "We offer virtual preoperative evaluations, allowing patients to receive an initial consultation from home," he explains. "Patients can access treatment within one week of contacting us, ensuring they don’t endure prolonged discomfort or disruptions to their daily lives." Creating a comfortable patient experience is also a priority. "When performing this procedure in the office, we strive to create a spa-like setting," Dr. Paterson notes. "Patients can eat before the procedure, drive themselves to and from the appointment, and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with their choice of music and dimmed lights. This makes the experience significantly different from traditional surgeries."

Dr. Paterson's dedication extends beyond his local practice. He sees injured workers from all over Florida and even accepts out-of-state patients. Practicing at Vero Orthopaedics, he specializes in comprehensive care for injuries and conditions affecting the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. His range of advanced treatments includes total shoulder and elbow replacement, trigger finger release, thumb implant replacement, shoulder, elbow, hand, and wrist fracture care, tendon and nerve laceration repair, and minimally invasive arthroscopic elbow surgery. For employers, adjusters, and nurses, understanding the benefits of this procedure is crucial. Ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release offers superior patient outcomes, rapid return-to-work success, and long-term cost mitigation. This innovative approach significantly reduces downtime, allowing employees to resume their duties more quickly and effectively. Dr. Paterson’s passion for helping patients is clear. "The best part of my work is meeting and assisting incredible people," he says with a smile. "Seeing the relief and improvement in their lives is truly rewarding." Dr. Paterson's commitment to patient-centered care is evident through his frequent hosting of free educational seminars and screenings, where employers can learn about ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release. Employers unfamiliar with this groundbreaking procedure are encouraged to reach out to Ozzy Diaz to schedule an in-service session. This opportunity provides a deeper understanding of the procedure’s advantages and how it can revolutionize the treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome for their workforce.

Dear Dr. Medina A valuable resource for adjusters, nurses, and case managers navigating foot health—one question at a time

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 78

Q

What are the most common causes of foot pain and how can they be treated effectively?

Most commonly overuse or certain injuries can lead to foot pain that can impact portions of the foot or even the entire foot. There can also be underlying health issues that can impact circulation and nerves that can also lead to foot pain. It is very beneficial to follow up with your foot and ankle specialist in order to learn more about how to manage the foot pain, as well as providing at-home care and prevention. Many causes of foot pain can be managed with rest, icing, medication (one of my favorites

Q

What are some common workplace factors that contribute to foot injuries and how can they be prevented?

In order to reduce foot injuries, you need to first identify and address the relevant hazards in the workplace. Then, you need to take the appropriate steps to eliminate those hazards through the job or workplace design, various measures of protection such as safety shoes that are slip resistant or steel-toed work boots aiding in slip and falls and crush injuries in the workplace, practicing good maintenance and housekeeping, keeping the workplace area free of clutter, always cleaning up spills promptly, and one of the most important aspects is to be observant of your work area. Try not to be distracted and not be in a hurry.

is menthol rubs with Vicks VapoRub due to the menthol

provider.

Can you recommend exercises or stretches that can help strengthen the feet and ankles to reduce the risk of workplace injuries?

Q

Strengthening and improving range of motion of the foot and ankle can help reduce injuries. Warming up prior to stretching is key. Stretching exercises increase flexibility and allow the muscles to work more effectively due to increased blood flow.

and camphor properties), wearing proper shoe gear, and, if there is any injury causing the foot pain, treating the injury correctly and following up with your healthcare

How can I prevent common foot problems like plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. Plantar fasciitis is very difficult to treat and, even when treated successfully, it can return. Basic prevention would include rest. Since plantar fasciitis is caused by inflammation and irritation, staying off of your feet can be helpful. Avoid high-impact activities initially. Warming up and gently stretching will provide and maintain that plantar fascial band stretched so that the inflammation and discomfort do not recur. Stretching is key. Do not forget to warm up prior. Wearing the correct shoes and good arch support also aid in preventing recurrence of plantar fasciitis. I always recommend avoiding walking barefoot. Limit certain sandals and flip-flops because there is no arch support provided. Many of these types of custom-made orthotics are the ones that I recommend due to the fact that they are built to last many years and are made to your foot type and foot shape. At the first sign of any discomfort, please try to get early care so that your healthcare provider/foot and ankle specialist can prevent the problem from progressing.

Q

Some examples would include: Ankle circles - Be sure to make the circles with the ankle in clockwise and counterclockwise directions to achieve the most benefit. Heel stretching - This can be done with an elastic band or a towel around the top of the foot and gently pulling back until you feel a light stretch in the calf and heel area. Calf raises - Keeping the ankles in neutral position and standing with the feet slightly apart, slowly lift both heels off the ground. Single leg balance - Standing on one foot, bending the knee slightly, and hold for 15 to 20 seconds. If you do not have much balance in the beginning, make sure you hold onto a countertop or against the wall. Again, remember to always warm up before stretching and exercising, and utilize appropriate shoe gear. These are just some examples of stretching exercises that provide the most significant benefit to the feet and ankles.

If you have any questions for Dr. Medina to answer on foot health, please email teambloom@ommktg.com with the subject line ‘Dear Dr. Medina’. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 79

Championing Kids' Chance of Florida Bloom Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down with Tammy Boyd, a local leader and passionate advocate for Kids' Chance of Florida (KCFL). In this heartfelt interview, Tammy shares her dedication to helping children of injured workers and the incredible impact KCFL has had on their lives. Bloom Magazine: Tammy, can you tell us about Kids' Chance of Florida and its mission? Tammy Boyd: Absolutely. Kids' Chance of Florida was established to provide educational opportunities and scholarships for children of workers who have been seriously injured or killed on the job. We believe that by investing in the education of these children, we can help them build brighter futures despite the challenges their families have faced.

Tammy Boyd: There are so many touching stories. Since our establishment in 2015, we've awarded $331,000 in scholarships to 71 recipients, and we have a 100% graduation rate for those who have completed their programs. Many of our students are still pursuing their degrees, some even at the graduate level, as we encourage them to reapply every year they are eligible. One standout story is of Dr. Melissa Cuervo, a KCFL scholarship recipient who recently graduated from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (Bradenton Campus) on Sunday, June 2, 2024. Melissa is set to begin her Pediatrics Residency Program at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her journey from overcoming personal loss to achieving her medical dreams is truly inspiring. Melissa stated, 'My goals are to grow as much as possible as a physician, advocate for my patients, and maintain a good work-life balance over the next few years.' On behalf of the KCFL Board, we are so proud of her and all our recipients.

Bloom Magazine: What inspired you to get involved with Kids' Chance? Tammy Boyd: My involvement with Kids' Chance started in 2017. I was moved by the stories of these children and their families. Seeing the struggles they went through and the resilience they showed really inspired me. I wanted to be part of something that could make a tangible difference in their lives, and Kids' Chance does exactly that. Bloom Magazine: Can you share some of the success stories from Kids' Chance of Florida? BLOOM MAGAZINE | 80

Bloom Magazine: The annual Kids' Chance Golf Tournament seems to be a significant event. Can you tell us more about it?

Bloom Magazine: What are your hopes for the future of Kids' Chance?

Tammy Boyd: The Golf Tournament is our flagship fundraising event, held in partnership with the WCI Conference. This year, it will be on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at Hawk's Landing Golf Club. It's always a fantastic day where the workers' compensation community and golf enthusiasts come together for a great cause. Our tournament is sold out every year, which shows the tremendous support we have. Last year, we raised $63,000, our highest amount to date, and we're hoping to surpass that this year. Every dollar raised goes towards scholarships for these deserving kids.

Tammy Boyd: I hope we can continue to grow and support even more children in the future. The need is always there, and with the community's continued support, we can provide more scholarships and opportunities. Ultimately, we want to ensure that every child affected by a workplace accident has the chance to pursue their educational dreams.

Bloom Magazine: How does Kids' Chance support its recipients beyond providing scholarships?

Tammy Boyd: There are many ways to get involved. People can participate in our fundraising events, like the Golf Tournament, or make donations directly to KCFL. Volunteering is also a great way to contribute. Every bit of support helps us make a difference in the lives of these kids.

Tammy Boyd: Beyond scholarships, we aim to be a support system for these children. We stay in touch with our recipients, offer guidance, and connect them with mentors and resources that can help them succeed in their educational and career goals. It's about creating a community where they feel supported and encouraged. Bloom Magazine: What impact has Kids' Chance of Florida had on the community so far? Tammy Boyd: Since 2015, we've had a significant impact. We've seen many students graduate with the help of our scholarships, and many are still pursuing their degrees. These kids have gone on to pursue various careers, contributing positively to their communities. Knowing that we've helped them achieve their dreams despite the hardships they've faced is incredibly fulfilling.

Handling Complex Workers' Compensation Cases: Best Practices and Insights Written by Jadell Mendez A complex workers’ compensation case is typically characterized by combination of factors that make it more challenging to resolve than a straightforward claim. In the intricate world of workers' compensation, straightforward cases can often become convoluted due to various factors. To better understand the topic, I would like to present some of the elements that could contribute to the complexity of these workers’ compensation cases. Severe Injuries Cases involving catastrophic injuries such as traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), Spinal cord injuries, amputations, multiple body parts injured or fractured. These injuries often require longer and extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation leading to long-term or permanent disability. Multiple or Conflicting Medical Opinions Cases could be complicated when there are differing medical opinions about the cause, extent, or treatment of the injury. Disagreements between treating physicians cand lead to disputes that require legal intervention. Pre-existing Conditions If the injured worker has pre-existing medical conditions that aggravated or exacerbated by the work-related injury, it can be challenging to determine the Major Contributing Cause of such findings, therefore it could affect the appropriate level of compensation and employer’s liability.

Occupational Diseases Those cases that involve occupational diseases like Asbestosis, Repetitive stress injuries, hearing loss, etc. are often complex because these conditions typically develop over time and providing a direct link to the workplace can be difficult. Psychological Injuries Claims involving psychological or psychiatric conditions including PTSD, depression, anxiety can be difficult to substantiate and treat. Also, in occasions these claims require expert testimony and can be contentious and costly to the carrier. Return to Work Issues Complications arise when there are disputes about the injured worker’s ability to return to work or the availability of a temporal or permanent modified position provided by the employer. Disputed Claims Cases where the employer or insurer disputes the occurrence of the injury, the extent of the disability, or the causation can lead to prolonged legal battles. Fraudulent claims or allegations of fraud also fall into this category.

Thorough Investigation and Documentation The foundation of a successful workers' compensation case is a meticulous investigation. Begin by gathering all pertinent details about the incident, including witness statements, accident reports, and any available video footage. Documentation should be comprehensive and precise, capturing every detail related to the injury, medical treatments, and communications with the employee. From the medical case management position, completing a throughout assessment, including prior medical history, current medical issues and ongoing medical treatment, obtaining a medical record release to request prior medical records could be an important key to determine compensability and cost containment of future medical care. A detailed investigation not only helps in understanding the case better but also ensures that you have a strong factual base to counter any disputes that may arise. In complex cases, where the cause of injury or the extent of disability might be contested, having robust evidence can be the difference between a favorable outcome and a protracted battle. Effective Communication with all parties involved Complex workers' compensation cases often involve multiple stakeholders, including the injured employee, medical professionals, insurance adjusters, and legal representatives. Establishing clear and consistent communication channels is crucial. Ensure that all parties are kept informed about the case's progress and any developments.

Third-Party Involvement When a third party is responsible for the injury like a subcontractor or equipment manufacturer the case can become more complex due to additional legal claims and potential for litigation against multiple parties. Multiple Jurisdictions The case could be complicated if the worker was injured while working in different states or countries, determining the appropriate jurisdiction and applicable laws.

Successfully navigating these complex cases requires a blend of strategic planning, effective communication, and a deep understanding of the legal landscape. Here are some best practices and insights for handling these challenging scenarios. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 84

Regular updates can prevent misunderstandings and help in managing expectations. For the injured employee, timely and empathetic communication can alleviate some of the stress and uncertainty associated with their situation, fostering a sense of trust and cooperation. Coordinated Medical Management Injuries that result in long-term or permanent disability require careful medical management. Work closely with medical providers to ensure that the injured employee receives appropriate and timely treatment. Comprehensive medical documentation is essential, as it forms the basis for determining the extent of the injury and the corresponding compensation. Consider involving a medical case manager to oversee the treatment plan and coordinate between different healthcare providers. This can help in ensuring that the employee follows through with the treatment, attends necessary appointments, and adheres to prescribed rehabilitation protocols. Proactive Return-to-Work Programs

Partnering with Experienced Legal Counsel Given the potential legal complexities, having an experienced workers' compensation attorney can be invaluable. Legal counsel can provide critical guidance on navigating the procedural nuances and help in developing a strong legal strategy. In cases involving severe injuries or long-term disabilities, legal expertise is particularly crucial. These situations often require detailed medical evidence and expert testimony, which can be challenging to compile without specialized legal knowledge. Handling complex workers' compensation cases requires a proactive, well-coordinated approach. By focusing on thorough investigation, effective communication, legal expertise, coordinated medical management, proactive return-to-work programs, and continuous education, participants can navigate these challenging cases more efficiently. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure fair and timely compensation for the injured employee while minimizing the impact on the organization.

Facilitating a return-to-work program can significantly benefit both the employer and the employee. Develop a structured plan that accommodates the employee’s medical restrictions and gradually transitions them back to their regular duties. This not only helps in reducing the overall compensation costs but also supports the employee’s physical and psychological recovery. Flexibility is key in return-to-work programs. Tailor the duties to match the employee's current capabilities and be prepared to make adjustments as they recover. Engage with the employee and their medical providers regularly to monitor progress and make necessary modifications. Continuous Education and Training Keeping up to date with the latest developments in workers' compensation laws and best practices is essential for handling complex cases effectively. Regular training sessions for HR professionals, managers, and supervisors can enhance their understanding of the intricacies involved and prepare them to respond appropriately. Consider participating in industry seminars, workshops, and online courses to stay informed about emerging trends and regulatory changes. Building a network of professionals in the field can also provide valuable insights and support.

Understanding Distal Biceps Tears in Workers Comp: Diagnosis and Treatment Options Written by Anand Panchal, DO Distal biceps tears are a significant concern, especially among workers engaged in physically demanding jobs. Such injuries can lead to considerable functional impairment and necessitate comprehensive management strategies. This article reviews the diagnosis and treatment options for distal biceps tears, particularly in the context of workers' compensation injuries. Anatomy and Mechanism of Injury The biceps brachii muscle, located in the upper arm, has two tendons at its distal end that attach to the radial tuberosity in the forearm. These tendons allow the biceps muscle to flex the elbow and supinate (rotate the hand into the palm up position) the forearm. A distal biceps tear involves the rupture of these tendons, often occurring when there is a sudden, forceful contraction of the muscle against a heavy load. (example is lifting a heavy tire or metal door with the arm slightly extended) Diagnosis of Distal Biceps Tears Accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial for optimal recovery, especially for workers whose livelihoods depend on their physical capabilities. The diagnostic process involves several steps: Clinical Evaluation: History: Patients typically report a sudden, sharp pain in the front of the elbow, often accompanied by a "pop" sound. Swelling, bruising, and weakness in elbow flexion and forearm supination are common.

Physical Examination: Key tests include: Hook Test: The examiner attempts to hook a finger under the biceps tendon from the lateral side of the elbow. A positive test, where the tendon cannot be palpated, indicates a tear. Biceps Squeeze Test: The examiner squeezes the biceps muscle belly while the forearm is supinated. A lack of forearm supination indicates a possible tear. Imaging Studies: X-rays: While not definitive for diagnosing tendon tears, X-rays can rule out fractures and other bony abnormalities. Ultrasound: An effective, non-invasive tool that can visualize the torn tendon and assess its retraction. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): The gold standard for confirming distal biceps tears, MRI provides detailed images of the soft tissues, showing the extent of the tear and retraction. This can extremely helpful in surgical planning. Treatment Options for Distal Biceps Tears Treatment strategies for distal biceps tears depend on the severity of the tear, the patient's age, activity level, and occupational demands. For workers' compensation cases, the goal is to restore function quickly and safely to facilitate a return to work. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 86

Non-Surgical Treatment: Non-surgical management may be considered for partial tears or in patients with low functional demands. Rest and Immobilization: Initial immobilization in a sling or brace helps reduce pain and swelling. Physical Therapy: Once the acute pain subsides, physical therapy focuses on gentle range-of-motion exercises, followed by strengthening exercises to restore function. Limitations: Non-surgical treatment often results in decreased strength and endurance in elbow flexion and forearm supination, which can be problematic for physically demanding jobs. Surgical Treatment: Surgical repair is the standard of care for complete distal biceps tears, especially for workers who require full arm strength and function. Techniques: Single-Incision Technique: This approach involves a single anterior incision to access and reattach the tendon to the radial tuberosity. It minimizes the risk of nerve injury and provides excellent cosmetic results. Two-Incision Technique: This method involves an additional posterior incision to help secure the tendon. It may reduce the risk of heterotopic ossification but carries a higher risk of nerve damage. Postoperative Rehabilitation: Immobilization: The arm is typically immobilized in a brace for several weeks to protect the repair. Physical Therapy: Gradual rehabilitation begins with passive and active range-of-motion exercises, progressing to strengthening exercises. The goal is to restore full function within 4-6 months. Workers' Compensation Considerations For workers' compensation cases, several factors need to be addressed to ensure a successful outcome: Timely Diagnosis and Treatment: Early recognition and intervention are critical to prevent long-term disability. Prompt surgical repair offers the best chance for a full functional recovery. Typically time from injury to surgery should be less than 2 weeks to maximize ability to perform a repair of the tendon.

Return-to-Work Programs: Modified Duties: Initially, workers may need to perform modified duties that avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities. Gradual Return: A phased return-to-work program helps workers gradually resume their full duties, minimizing the risk of re-injury. Communication with Stakeholders: Employer Collaboration: Open communication with employers about the worker's progress and capabilities ensures appropriate job modifications and accommodations. Insurance and Legal Considerations: Documentation of the injury, treatment, and rehabilitation progress is crucial for workers' compensation claims. Psychosocial Support: Workers may experience stress and anxiety related to their injury and job security. Providing psychological support and counseling can aid in the overall recovery process. Prognosis and Long-Term Outcomes The prognosis for distal biceps tears is generally favorable with appropriate treatment. Surgical repair offers excellent outcomes, with most patients regaining near-normal strength and function. However, some patients may experience residual weakness or discomfort. Long-term outcomes are influenced by several factors: Severity of the Tear: Complete tears with significant retraction may require more complex repairs and have longer recovery times. Timing of Surgery: Early surgical intervention generally leads to better outcomes. Rehabilitation Compliance: Adherence to physical therapy and rehabilitation protocols is crucial for optimal recovery. Distal biceps tears are significant injuries that require a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment, particularly in the context of workers' compensation. Timely intervention, appropriate surgical techniques, and structured rehabilitation programs are essential for restoring function and facilitating a successful return to work. By addressing both the physical and psychosocial aspects of recovery, healthcare providers can support injured workers in achieving the best possible outcomes and maintaining their occupational capabilities.

THE DRIVING FORCE OF MOTIVATION: ESSENTIAL FOR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS Written by Dr. Claire Muselman Motivation is the driving force that propels us toward our goals, fuels our actions, and sustains our perseverance through challenges. It is essential to personal and professional success, impacting every aspect of our lives. Whether striving for career advancement, personal development, or simply overcoming daily obstacles, motivation plays a pivotal role in our achievements. Understanding what drives us can lead to more fulfilling and successful personal and professional lives. By cultivating and harnessing motivation, we unlock our potential to achieve great things and create a positive, dynamic environment for ourselves and those around us. WHAT IS MOTIVATION? Motivation is the inner drive or external stimulus that compels us to take action, pursue goals, and persist in facing obstacles. It gives us the energy and determination to strive for success and personal fulfillment. Motivation can be intrinsic, arising from within ourselves, or extrinsic, driven by external rewards and recognition. Internal desires fuel intrinsic motivation, such as pursuing knowledge, personal growth, or the joy of accomplishing a task. External factors like money, praise, or the avoidance of negative consequences drive extrinsic motivation. Understanding the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation is crucial for developing a balanced and sustainable approach to achieving our goals. While extrinsic motivators can be effective in the short term, intrinsic motivation often leads to more sustained and meaningful engagement in activities. WHY IS MOTIVATION IMPORTANT? Motivation is essential for several reasons, as it helps us achieve our goals and lead fulfilling lives. Firstly, motivation drives us to set and pursue meaningful goals. Without motivation, we would lack the drive to start and maintain efforts to achieve our aspirations. Secondly, motivation is our secret weapon in facing challenges and setbacks. It is about achieving success and our ability to bounce back and keep going. A strong sense of motivation helps us stay committed to our objectives and continue working toward them despite difficulties. Motivation enhances our productivity and performance. Motivated individuals are more focused, efficient, and effective in their tasks, leading to higher achievement and success. Moreover, motivation plays a significant role in our mental and emotional well-being. Engaging in activities that we find motivating and fulfilling can increase our overall happiness and life satisfaction. Motivation also influences our personal growth and development. By continually striving to achieve our goals, we learn new skills, expand our knowledge, and build confidence and competence.

WHY SHOULD WE CARE ABOUT MOTIVATION? Caring about motivation is crucial because it directly impacts our ability to achieve our goals and lead fulfilling lives. Motivation is the key to unlocking our potential and realizing our aspirations. With motivation, we can find purpose and direction, which can lead to stagnation and dissatisfaction. Additionally, motivation is essential for maintaining our mental and emotional well-being. Engaging in activities that motivate and inspire us can boost our mood, reduce stress, and enhance our overall quality of life. Understanding and harnessing motivation can lead to greater personal and professional success. It's not just about setting and achieving goals but about the journey and the growth that comes with it. Motivated individuals are likelier to set and achieve ambitious goals, persevere through challenges, and excel in their endeavors. By cultivating motivation, we can enhance our productivity, performance, and satisfaction in personal and professional contexts. Motivation is contagious; when we are motivated and enthusiastic, we can inspire and influence those around us, creating a positive and dynamic environment.

When we set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timebound (SMART) goals, we give ourselves direction and purpose. Clear goals help us focus our efforts and track our progress, boosting motivation and providing a sense of accomplishment. Understanding the underlying reasons for pursuing a goal can enhance intrinsic motivation. Reflect on why the goal is important and how it aligns with your values and passions. Connecting your actions to a deeper purpose can provide sustained motivation and drive. Breaking significant goals into smaller steps can make them more achievable and less daunting. Each small success can build momentum and reinforce motivation. Surrounding ourselves with supportive and encouraging people can boost motivation. A positive environment fosters accountability and encouragement during challenging times. Reducing distractions and creating a conducive workspace can also enhance focus and productivity. Recognizing and celebrating achievements, no matter how small, can reinforce motivation. Rewards can be intrinsic, such as a sense of pride and satisfaction, or extrinsic, such as a treat or a break. Regularly acknowledging progress helps maintain enthusiasm and commitment. Being flexible and adaptable allows us to adjust our approach and stay committed to our goals despite obstacles. Embracing a growth mindset sustains motivation by seeing challenges as opportunities for learning and improvement. Visualization is a powerful tool for enhancing motivation. Imagining a goal's successful completion and its positive outcomes can create a sense of excitement and anticipation. Visualization can also clarify the steps needed to achieve the goal and reinforce commitment. Finding sources of inspiration can boost motivation. This inspiration can include reading motivational books, listening to inspiring speakers, or learning about the achievements of others. Inspiration can provide new perspectives and rekindle enthusiasm for pursuing goals. THE IMPACT OF MOTIVATION The impact of motivation on our lives is profound and farreaching. Tennis Elbow: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Written by Eric Balaguer, MD Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a painful condition affecting the outer part of the elbow. Despite its name, it's not exclusive to tennis players. Anyone who repeatedly uses their forearm muscles, especially in activities involving gripping and wrist extension, can develop this condition. CAUSES Tennis elbow is primarily caused by overuse and repetitive strain of the tendons that attach the forearm muscles to the outer bony bump of the elbow. Microscopic tears develop in the tendon due to this repetitive strain, leading to inflammation and pain. Common activities that can trigger tennis elbow include: Racquet sports (tennis, squash, badminton) Golf Painting Carpentry Plumbing Repetitive computer mouse use SYMPTOMS The hallmark symptom of tennis elbow is pain or burning on the outer part of the elbow. The pain may worsen with gripping objects, twisting motions, or lifting. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 92

Other symptoms may include: Weakened grip strength Stiffness in the elbow Pain radiating down the forearm DIAGNOSIS A doctor can typically diagnose tennis elbow through a physical examination and a discussion of your symptoms and activities. They may also perform tests to rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms, such as arthritis or nerve compression.

TREATMENT In most cases, tennis elbow can be effectively treated with non-surgical methods. 80% of patients will have the symptoms resolve on their own within 6 months. These may include: Rest: Avoiding activities that exacerbate the pain is crucial for allowing the tendon to heal. Ice: Applying ice packs to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and pain. Pain relievers: Over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen or naproxen can help manage discomfort. Physical therapy: Specific exercises can help strengthen the forearm muscles and improve flexibility, aiding in the healing process. Bracing: Wearing a brace around the forearm can help reduce strain on the affected tendons. Corticosteroid injections: In some cases, injecting corticosteroids into the affected area may be recommended to reduce inflammation but will not be beneficial to heal the tendon and, in most circumstances, once the cortisone wears off, the symptoms recur. Regenerative Medicine: Platelet Rich Plasma, Amniotic Fluid and Stem cell injections are being used effectively to treat this condition. PRP Injection: PRP is derived from a patient's own blood, which is processed to concentrate platelets. Platelets are rich in growth factors that play a crucial role in tissue healing and regeneration. Injection is very painful for several days.

Amniotic Fluid Injection: Amniotic fluid, the fluid that surrounds and protects a developing fetus, contains growth factors, cytokines, and other substances that can promote tissue repair and regeneration. Reduce inflammation: Amniotic fluid contains anti-inflammatory cytokines that can help calm the immune response and reduce pain. Stimulate tissue repair: Growth factors in amniotic fluid can encourage the growth of new cells and tissues, promoting healing. Modulate scar tissue formation: Amniotic fluid may help prevent the formation of excessive scar tissue, which can impair tissue function. Stem cell injection: Stem cells are unique cells that have the ability to differentiate into various cell types, potentially promoting tissue repair and regeneration. Cost is very high Invasive If conservative treatments fail to provide relief, surgery may be considered.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 93

SURGICAL OPTIONS: Tenex: Ultrasound Guided ECRB tenotomy Tenex is a minimally invasive procedure that utilizes ultrasonic energy to break down and remove damaged tissue within the tendon, leaving healthy tissue intact. Success rate documented between 85-95% Can be done in the office under local anesthesia Shockwave Therapy: Non-invasive treatment option for tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis). It involves delivering highenergy sound waves to the affected area to stimulate healing and reduce pain. The shockwaves create microtrauma in the tissue, which triggers the body's natural healing response. This process increases blood flow to the area, promotes the formation of new blood vessels, and stimulates the production of collagen, a key protein for tissue repair. Shockwave therapy usually requires multiple sessions (3-5) for optimal results Open Release of ECRB tendon Origin/Tendon Lengthening Open surgical procedure to release or lengthen the ECRB tendon Success rate 80-90% Long recovery period

Tennis elbow is a frequent condition, which is very hard to treat. The key to this condition is complete healing of the ECRB tendon. Many times, this is very difficult to achieve. Most time it requires a combination of all the available treatment and significant amount of time for the tendon to fully heal and the pain completely resolves.

40 One-Sentence Self-Care Tips Written By Mari Diaz

I’ve written a lot about self-care over the years. There is always more to be said on the topic because I see people not taking care of themselves, and it breaks my heart. In my own life, self-care has given me clarity, stability, and a deeper connection with myself. It allows me to be more creative, refuels my energy, and gives me access to more possibilities for living the life I want. So, in case you need a little reminder to keep making time for yourself, here are 40 onesentence prompts to help you prioritize selfcare! Keep blooming, friends!

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 106

1. Self-care is about finding practices that help you stay balanced and healthy – mentally, physically, and emotionally. 2. An important act of self-care is standing up for your energy and time when other people are asking too much of you. 3. Setting boundaries can sound intimidating, but it will give you the freedom to spend time doing what you love. 4. Following your heart is an act of self-care. 5. Listening to your intuition is an act of self-care. 6. Don’t avoid the things that make you feel better. 7. Making time for yourself in the morning will help the rest of your day run more smoothly. 8. The way you talk to yourself manifests in everything you do. 9. Instead of asking yourself why you’re so lazy, ask yourself why you might need so much rest. - Dr. Emily Anhalt 10. Burnout happens when you avoid being human for too long. 11. You'll show up as the truest version of yourself when you prioritize what you need. 12. You deserve to do what’s best for you. 13. If self-care makes you feel lazy, you might not have found the right self-care method for you. 14. Get clear on why you want to make self-care part of your lifestyle so you can’t make excuses to get out of it. 15. Don’t deplete your emotional, mental, and physical energy on something that doesn’t align with your values. 16. Sometimes all you need is a few moments to recuperate from a setback, and other times you need a whole day to recover; both are okay. 17. If you don’t want to do something, you don’t need to justify your decision to anyone. 18. Instead of worrying about being consistent, focus on being resilient with your actions so you can get back on track when you’re ready. 19. Take a break before you think you need it. 20. Recognize the difference between self-care, selfsabotage, and self-soothing.

21. Small efforts will add up over time. 22. When you’re clear with your boundaries and make every effort to stick to them, you reflect back to yourself that your needs are important. 23. Showing up for yourself often means not showing up for everything and everyone else. 24. Make two self-care lists: a list of things that sustain you when you have high energy, and a list of things that keep you regulated when you feel low. 25. You don’t have to keep pushing yourself to do more. 26. Keeping commitments to yourself is the ultimate act of self-care. 27. Instead of trying to change all of your habits at once, start by setting one self-care goal for yourself and do what you can to stick to it. 28. Under any circumstance, always do your best, no more and no less. 29. Don’t get swept into the marketing side of self-care that’s solely focused on selling you a product. 30. To take care of ourselves from the inside out, we need to focus on what we actually need, not what other people tell us we need. 31. All self-care activities and behaviors are learnt from others and are influenced by the external environments in which people live and work. 32. Whatever is causing you discomfort, you get to decide if you are going to accept it or find a way to change it. 33. Prioritize your support system and get comfortable asking for help. 34. True self-care involves sacrifice, honesty, community, and a commitment to making choices in your best interest. 35. The soul usually knows what to do to heal itself; the challenge is to silence the mind. 36. Make time for self-care in the “fringe hours” - the pockets of time between meetings, projects, and chores that often get wasted. 37. Get away from social media regularly so you can listen to what you really want. 38. When you’re trying to decide whether or not to do something, ask what would make life easier or better for your future self. 39. Let yourself take up as much space as you need in this world. 40. Don’t break the most important promise - a promise to yourself.

Here’s why I totally disagree— Reflecting on my childhood, I recall that the end of August always brought a sense of sadness. Despite the heat and humidity in Cincinnati, the end of summer meant shorter days and the return to school. I worried about the unknowns—new teachers, classes, and friends. I imagined endless possibilities that were never rooted in any proven facts. I stored all the “possibilities of what would happen during the first week of school in my memory. As an introverted child, I followed rules without question, doing what adults told me. I silently wondered what would be told to me weeks before school reopened from elementary through high school. It wasn’t until after college graduation that I began to consider what wasas compared to what could be.

Can ADHD Be A Superpower? AN INTERVIEW WITH MARI DIAZ Written by Anailis Diaz As Mari and I chat over coffee, we find ourselves laughing about how we can't even stay on track with the interview because we keep getting sidetracked by a hundred other topics at once. Our conversations tend to jump around quite a bit, but that's just how we operate. We always joke, 'We'll figure it out!' There's nothing we can't do—we're always up for whatever comes our way, haha! But circling back to today's interview, I'm really glad I convinced Mari to share her story. She's been sharing pieces of it, but not quite in this interview format—it's deeply personal and incredibly empowering. Mari Diaz is an entrepreneurial powerhouse. She has founded several thriving companies, including OM Marketing, OM Directory, MD Apothecary, The Self Love Club, Bloom Collective (a community for women in workers' compensation), Eight, Bloom & OM Magazine, The Orange Lab, and ME, Inc., a women's wellness and self-love retreat. As a certified Master Herbalist and Face Yoga Instructor, Mari brings her expertise to all aspects of her work. She is a mentor to many and is passionate about helping others focus on self-love, self-care, wellness, entrepreneurship, career, relationships, and friendships. Recently, Mari shared a deeply personal part of her journey—her late-life diagnosis of ADHD. Diagnosed just a few months ago, this revelation has added a new layer to her already impressive story. In our conversation, Mari opened up about how this diagnosis has transformed her understanding of herself and her mission.

Reflecting on her life, Mari shared how she always felt different. Her mind was a whirlwind of ideas, her energy boundless, and her ability to juggle multiple projects was both a gift and a challenge. Despite these traits, she built an empire, often feeling like she was constantly battling an invisible force. The ADHD diagnosis was a revelation, providing clarity and a sense of understanding that had eluded her for years. "Suddenly, everything made sense," Mari said. "The struggles, the strengths, the way my brain works—all of it. It was like finding the missing piece of a very complex puzzle." BLOOM MAGAZINE | 110

Instead of seeing her ADHD as a hindrance, Mari now views it as her superpower. The same qualities that posed challenges—her relentless energy, her ability to think outside the box, and her rapid-fire thinking—are the very traits that have fueled her success. "I've learned to embrace my ADHD," she said. "It makes me who I am, and it’s been a big part of why I've been able to achieve so much. I love the way my brain works." Mari's story is part of a larger narrative about successful women with ADHD. Research shows that many highachieving women share similar experiences, using their unique cognitive styles to become leaders and innovators. Mari is a proud advocate of this perspective, championing the idea that ADHD can be a source of strength and empowerment. In our conversation, Mari really emphasized the importance of community and support. She pointed out how much she values resources like "ADHD for Smart Ass Women," a book that's completely changed the game for women navigating ADHD. With her close circle of friends and family who really understand her, Mari finds endless inspiration—she's always sharing new ideas with us, often daily! Sometimes we have to rein her in, but that never stops her; she dives in headfirst and we catch up later, but we love her for it. She's incredibly proud of how OM's and Bloom's journey has unfolded. OM started as a small marketing firm in 2004 but has grown to become the first choice for employers, adjusters, and case managers seeking top doctors for their injured workers. Meanwhile, The Bloom Community is growing, and its magazine readership is rapidly expanding nationally. She smiles and adds with a touch of humor, "Oh, and we're even launching a new magazine! But yes, looking back on it all..." Reflecting on this journey, Mari grins and says, "I'm incredibly proud of how OM, The Bloom Magazine, and The Bloom Community have really blossomed! (No pun intended.) Whether it's connecting employers with top physicians or empowering women in the workers' comp industry, every milestone we reach fills my heart with gratitude. Beyond the numbers, Mari sees The Bloom Community as a safe haven where women can feel heard, supported, and empowered for whatever life throws their way, whether they have ADHD or not. "The Bloom Community means the world to me," she shared warmly. "It's all about creating a space where every woman can thrive and find her strength, no matter her journey."

Her experiences illustrate how ADHD's perceived constraints can actually enhance creativity and lead to remarkable achievements. "ADHD has taught me to harness my strengths and turn them into superpowers," she said. Mari's journey is about more than just accepting neurodiversity—it's about celebrating it. She demonstrates that authenticity fosters deep connections and impactful work. With her diverse background, exceptional business acumen, and unwavering dedication to women's wellness and self-love, Mari Diaz is a true inspiration. She continues to motivate others to pursue their dreams while advocating for the importance of self-care and embracing one's unique identity. "Too many women are undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, or diagnosed and then told to lower their ambitions as a result," Mari passionately added. "Once I realized this shocking truth, I made it my mission to change the conversation around this condition. I firmly believe that I’ve achieved success in life because of my ADHD, not despite it." Looking at Mari, I see a woman who has turned what some may see as a challenge into an incredible source of strength. Her journey of embracing her neurodiversity and using it to fuel her success is not just inspiring—it's a powerful reminder that our differences are what make us extraordinary. Being authentically yourself is soulnourishing. So go ahead, dance like nobody’s watching in your fabulous gowns, ladies, and let's channel that fearless Mari energy. In Mari's own words, "Never dim your light or lose your authenticity to blend in with others. Don’t follow the crowd; be different. Always be YOU!" With that, Mari and I keep walking, and oh look, there's a cat! And there she goes off to chase the cat. But wait, Mari, let's finish the interview first. Oh, wait, did you see this? We need to do this for our next event! And just like that, we're into another full conversation. I guess we'll finish later, haha!

Mari also highlighted the significant challenge many women face due to undiagnosed or misunderstood ADHD: "Too many women live with reduced expectations and let life pass them by because they haven’t learned how to zero in on their strengths and work with their ADHD brain." She shared that she is currently developing a masterclass and writing a book on practical strategies for coping with ADHD, which she believes has been transformative for her. She wants to share these insights with other women because she firmly believes ADHD is not a limitation but a superpower. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 111

Your Guide To A Grounding Bath Ritual Written By Mari Diaz

Taking the time to cleanse your body and mind from the day is one of the most important acts of self-care you can embrace. One of my favorite ways to achieve this is through a grounding bath ritual. This practice allows me to reconnect with myself and let go of any negative energy I’ve picked up throughout the day. The warm water, soothing scents, and intentional moments of peace create a sanctuary where I can truly unwind and reset. There are countless ways to personalize this ritual to make it uniquely yours. You might add your favorite essential oils, surround yourself with candles, or bring a book to read while you soak. The key is to make it a cherished part of your routine, something you look forward to and rely on for comfort and grounding.

For me, this ritual has become a beloved escape, a way to nurture my body and spirit. It’s a simple, yet profound way to practice self-care, shedding the stresses of the day and emerging refreshed and reconnected. Whether it’s a quick 20 minutes or a luxurious hour, this grounding bath ritual is a gift you give to yourself, one that brings balance, peace, and a sense of renewal. PREPARING YOUR SPACE 1.Create a Tranquil Environment: Choose a time when you won't be disturbed. Dim the lights, light some candles, and play soft, calming music to set a peaceful mood. 2.Clean and Declutter: Ensure your bathroom is clean and free from clutter to allow for a clear mind and focused ritual.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 114

GATHERING YOUR INGREDIENTS 1. Sea Salt or Epsom Salt: These salts detoxify and cleanse your energy. 2. Essential Oils: Grounding essential oils like cedarwood, vetiver, or frankincense promote stability and calm. 3. Herbs: Dried herbs like sage, rosemary, or lavender add grounding and protective qualities. 4. Crystals: Grounding stones such as black tourmaline, hematite, or smoky quartz can be placed around the tub or held during the bath.

ENDING THE RITUAL 1. Gratitude: When you feel ready, slowly stand up and express gratitude for the earth and the water, thanking them for their support and healing energy. 2. Rinse and Refresh: Rinse off with cool water to close your pores and invigorate your senses, symbolizing washing away the last remnants of negative energy. 3. Grounding Activities: After your bath, engage in grounding activities such as walking barefoot on grass, meditating, or journaling about your experience.

CREATING THE RITUAL 1. Set Your Intention: Before starting, take a moment to set a clear intention for your bath, such as releasing stress, reconnecting with yourself, or finding peace and calm. 2. Prepare the Bath: Fill your tub with warm water. As the water runs, add a cup of sea salt or Epsom salt, a few drops of essential oils, and a handful of herbs. 3. Mindful Entry: Step into the bath mindfully, feeling the warmth of the water and the soothing sensation as it envelops you.

Incorporating a grounding bath ritual into my self-care routine has been incredibly impactful. Using simple, natural ingredients and setting mindful intentions has allowed me to create a calming and healing space that brings balance and inner peace. Consistency and sincerity have been key. Making grounding baths a regular part of my self-care has helped me feel more connected, calm, and resilient in facing life’s challenges.

DURING THE BATH Relax and Breathe: Close your eyes and take deep breaths. Focus on your breath and imagine roots growing from your body, connecting deeply with the earth below. Visualization: Visualize the water absorbing any negative energy, stress, or anxiety, cleansing and purifying it. Affirmations: Repeat grounding affirmations to yourself, such as “I am stable and secure,” “I am connected to the earth,” or “I release all that does not serve me.”

I INVITE YOU TO EMBRACE THE POWER OF A GROUNDING BATH RITUAL. LET THE SOOTHING ELEMENTS OF NATURE HELP YOU RETURN TO A STATE OF INNER HARMONY AND PEACE. TRUST ME, YOU’LL FEEL THE DIFFERENCE.

NATURAL WAYS TO DECREASE ANXIETY Written by Melissa Diaz

Anxiety can be hard to manage. It’s unpredictable; anxiety can range from something that is manageable when implemented with certain coping mechanisms, to a debilitating phenomenon that affects one’s everyday life. Anxiety doesn't discriminate based on age, gender or race. In fact, it affects millions of people each day. In this article we are going to look at 11 ways you can use natural remedies to help decrease your anxiety. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 116

DRINK A CUP OF TEA Most anxiety sufferers are not aware that anxiety is often a result of dehydration. To combat this, drink plenty of water and make sure to stay hydrated throughout your day. However, if you find yourself still feeling anxious or unable to concentrate, try drinking an anxiety relief tea like Chamomile iced tea, Mint tea or Valerian Root Tea.

GET SOME EXERCISE Exercise not only helps anxiety sufferers to release tension in their muscles but it also releases endorphins which naturally helps lessen anxiety. Try taking a walk or going for a jog around the block and see how your anxiety feels afterwards, most people find that exercise is an excellent anxiety relief method.

TAKE A BATH A hot bath not only helps relax the muscles and release tension in the body, but it also has anxiety relief benefits as well. Adding different oils, like lavender oil, provides anxiety soothing properties and essential oils that are known for their anxiety fighting abilities such as peppermint.

FIND SOME HUMOR Laughter really is the best medicine so don't forget to laugh. Watching a funny film or TV show, reading something humorous or even telling jokes with friends can help alleviate anxiety levels immensely because it gives your mind and body a chance to take a break and relax for just a little while.

GET ENOUGH SLEEP When anxiety is at its worst, there's nothing better than a good night of sleep to help you get back on your feet again. Make sure that you are getting an adequate amount of sleep each day so that anxiety doesn't have a chance to take hold and keep you up all night long.

MEDITATION Meditation is an excellent anxiety relief method because it allows you to focus on the present and let go. Get in a comfortable position, close your eyes, and take deep cleansing breaths; in for four seconds, then out for eight.

TAKE DEEP BREATHS This is an easy way to combat anxiety, simply take deep cleansing breaths; in for three seconds and then out for three seconds. This can be done anywhere, anytime, and will help slow down your heart rate to prevent anxiety from clouding your mind.

Remember, anxiety is a natural reaction to stress. However, it doesn't have to control your life. I hope these anxiety relief methods will help you in the long run when It comes to reducing anxiety. I know they have for me.

GO OUTSIDE Spending time outdoors is a great way to fight anxiety because it provides the body with Vitamin D which helps in regulating serotonin levels and boosts moods naturally. Fresh air also provides anxiety relief as it calms the mind and body. AVOID CAFFEINE Caffeine is a stimulant that can worsen anxiety when consumed in excess quantities. If you are feeling anxious, cut back on coffee or other caffeinated drinks for even just one day and see how your anxiety feels afterwards. Many people find their anxiety subsides when using this remedy.

The Silent Sufferers WHY MEN'S HEALTH NEEDS A REVOLUTION Written by Nelson Gonzalez Think of a man. Now, picture him not as the invincible rock of a bygone era, but as a complex being, riddled with vulnerabilities he often hides beneath a stoic mask. This is the reality for many men: a world where physical and mental health concerns simmer beneath the surface, often ignored until they erupt in a crisis. This needs to change. Men's health is not a niche concern; it's a societal imperative with ramifications that touch every aspect of our lives. From the boardroom to the blue-collar job site, men are often expected to be the unsinkable ships, weathering storms without a whimper. This ingrained cultural narrative of masculinity discourages open conversations about health, leading to a crisis in prevention and early detection. In the realm of risk management and worker’s compenstation, the consequences of this silence are profound. Untreated health issues lead to increased workplace accidents, absenteeism, and a diminished quality of life for both the injured worker and those who depend on them. We, the very professionals tasked with safeguarding workplace well-being, often fall victim to the same silence, neglecting our own health and unknowingly jeopardizing not only our own lives, but the lives of those who depend on us. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 118

Consider the statistics: Men die at a younger age than women from nearly every leading cause of death, including heart disease, cancer, and suicide. Mental health issues like depression and anxiety, though increasingly acknowledged, are still under-diagnosed and under-treated in men. The stoic facade often masks these internal struggles, delaying intervention and potentially devastating outcomes. This isn't just about individual well-being; it's about the domino effect impacting families and communities. A father struggling with untreated depression might inadvertently neglect his children's emotional needs. A husband battling chronic pain might become withdrawn from his spouse, creating a chasm in their relationship. The ripple effects can be devastating. In the risk management and worker’s compenstation landscape, ignoring men's health translates to higher costs and diminished productivity. Untreated chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease can lead to on-the-job injuries or exacerbate existing ones. Mental health issues can affect focus, decision-making, and overall safety. This creates a vicious cycle – poor health fuels workplace issues, and workplace stressors negatively impact health. So how do we break this cycle? The answer lies in a multi-pronged approach. First, we need a cultural shift. We need to redefine masculinity as something more than just physical strength and stoicism. Openly discussing health concerns, seeking help when needed, and prioritizing well-being – these are not signs of weakness, but hallmarks of strength and responsibility. Second, healthcare systems need to be more men-friendly. Many men feel uncomfortable with traditional healthcare settings, often perceiving them as judgmental or lacking in understanding of their specific needs. Creating male-focused clinics with knowledgeable staff and a welcoming environment can encourage early intervention. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 119

Third, risk management and workers’ compenstaion professionals can play a crucial role. By incorporating men's health awareness into workplace safety programs, promoting healthy lifestyle choices, and offering mental health resources, these professionals can become champions of preventive care for their workforce. Imagine a world where men are encouraged to take charge of their health, where seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Imagine workplaces that prioritize employee well-being and create a culture of openness around health issues. The economic benefits for companies would be significant, but more importantly, the human cost of neglected health would plummet. This fight for men's health is not just for the men themselves. It's for their families, their friends, and the communities they hold together. It's about fostering healthy families, productive workforces, and a more vibrant society. It's about building a world where men aren't just the anchors, but also the cared-for, the prioritized, the empowered when it comes to their health. This is just the beginning of the conversation. In upcoming articles, we'll delve deeper into specific men's health concerns, explore innovative approaches to prevention and treatment, and celebrate the men who are actively defying the stereotypes and taking charge of their well-being. Stay tuned, because the future of men's health is bright, but only if we start talking about it today.

From Diagnosis to Determination MY JOURNEY FROM BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR TO NONPROFIT LEADER Written by Ashley Lloyd Breast cancer is a journey that no one should face alone. As someone who is deeply involved in the breast cancer world and as a 39-year-old Stage 3 breast cancer survivor, I hope that no one ever will face their diagnosis without someone by their side. My name is Ashley Lloyd, and I am the Director of Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida, a nonprofit that provides short term, non-medical financial assistance to breast cancer patients in active treatment throughout Central Florida. Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida provides unwavering support, resources, and hope to women battling this formidable disease. We pay to invoice rent or mortgage, utilities, car payments and car insurance. BCFCF also helps with gas for treatment travel and helps with groceries. We are committed to fostering wellness, promoting self-care, and uniting women. As a past recipient of this organization’s help two years ago, I am the greatest testimony. In November 2020, the day before Thanksgiving, I received a phone call that changed my life: I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer at 36 years old. Oh, and throw in this was the beginning of COVID shutdown, so I mentally lost it. I’d never had a cavity, never broken a bone, I thought I was for the most part healthy. Insurance doesn’t cover mammograms until you’re 40, so I had never really thought about getting one as it wasn’t on my ‘to do’ list. I had felt a lump but kept hoping it was tissue or something and would go away. Hearing you have breast cancer is terrifying enough, but it’s not the only fear that enters your mind. I was worried about the unknownhow much work would I miss? How would we keep up with kids’ soccer and keep our lights on? Radiation crème was $50 for 6 ounces, $75 for the mastectomy pillow, oh and the deductible to pay before surgery.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 122

The doctors asked if my breast cancer was genetic, but I had no idea because I was adopted. I had to do genetic testing (also something my insurance didn't cover), and I decided to find my birth parents. All or nothing, right?! Thankfully, I don't have the BRACA gene, but I do have a gene mutation for colon cancer. (Apparently, I got the wrong cancer, so add colonoscopy every year to that to do list) While I was getting ready for surgery and having major anxiety about how life would continue for my family while I was recovering, my friend told me about this group she had heard of. She didn’t know anything about them, but it couldn’t hurt to call. This phone call led to my mortgage, car payment, car insurance, and electric being paid for two months so I could focus on getting better. My children’s daycare was paid, we received help with groceries and school supplies, and more. Wait, so this small group of women just helped women fighting breast cancer, no strings attached!?!? I was in awe of this Godsend, but I needed to know more.

I dove into the world of nonprofit and healthcare, neither of which I was familiar with. I just started sending emails and speaking to groups, going to networking events and such. Over the last year, the growth was shocking as people found out who we are. Florida Cancer Specialists, Moffitt Cancer Center, Watson Clinic, Central FL Health Care, Bayfront, Orlando Health, Bay Care, and Advent are all somehow involved with BCFCF now. Husbands of patients were asking for support groups; we also started a women’s support group. Shops that closed due to COVID donated hundreds of brand-new bras and wigs, so we now provide wigs, bras, and prosthetics. We have started a local survivor and support group. We held our first golf tournament, Jeepin for a Cure, and more.

I opted for a lumpectomy with an oncologic reduction, with 8 Accuboost and 40 radiation treatments. I had positive lymph node involvement and those were removed. was put on Anastrozole for 8 years, and Lupron shot for 5- basically anything to not let my body produce estrogen.

I began hand selecting and building the Board of Directors and filing to stand as a foundation on its own here in FL, separate from our parent chapter BCFO. (Mary Beth O’Reilly, founder of O’Reilly Auto Parts, is a family friend of Leah’s and a 25-year breast cancer survivor. Leah and her friends prior worked under BCFO)

I kept telling everyone about this group of women that helped me, but no one knew what I was talking about. I prayed that if I beat my battle, I would vow to help BCFCF grow. I didn't want to just sit around and wait for breast cancer again and not pay it forward.

In the face of breast cancer, the strength of a united community can’t be broken. BCFCF is not anywhere close to being done, and still have a lot of growing to do. Together, we are stronger, and I want to share just a couple initiatives that are needed and vital to BCFCF:

Our Florida founder, Leah Grieger, was diagnosed in 2017 and wanted to help our local communities. She and a group of close friends host an annual Pink Ribbon Gala every October, and this is presented by Watson Clinic. When she saw how grateful I was and how determined I was to BCFCF, she asked me to take the torch. She said she felt in her heart that I was the person that BCFCF needed to grow. Being diagnosed with BC doesn’t just affect the patient; it’s a life altering event that affects the entire family. For this reason, BCFCF has a separate children’s fund that we help with the daily life of the children in the home- orthodontic appointments, a musical instrument, cheer lessons, school uniforms. We provide additional help in December to help with Christmas and are trying to make our Children’s Fund able to provide more support as we are growing and expanding. Our hope is to let the children keep their daily life as normal as possible as one of their parents is fighting for their life. Today, I have patients being referred to us as Susan Komen and American Cancer Society, which seems crazy to me! I still work out of a room in my house, as we can’t afford to pay for an office yet. Did you know that these national organizations are no longer helping with financial assistance like mortgage etc. as they used to, so if someone we know gets diagnosed, do you know who Susan Komen tells them to call? Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida.

1.Community Outreach: Raising awareness and providing education about breast cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment options is a collective effort. We host community outreach events to spread knowledge and encourage proactive health measures, while also looking for ways to reach new supporters, volunteers, and donors. 2.Support networks: Peer support is invaluable. Our foundation facilitates support networks where women can connect, share their stories, and find encouragement from other women who understand their journey. Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida is more than an organization that raises money; it is a lifeline for women navigating the challenges of breast cancer. Through our commitment to wellness, selfcare, philanthropy, and unity, we empower women to face their journey with courage and hope. By coming together, we can create a supportive, compassionate community where our patients are cheered on to fight and become a thriver. No one should ever have to choose between a radiation treatment or keeping their lights on at home. By amplifying voices and driving change, we strive to make a lasting impact on the healthcare landscape. Please join us in our mission to make a difference, one woman at a time.

Mykonos A MINI GUIDE TO THE QUINTESSENTIAL GREEK ISLAND EXPERIENCE Written & Photos by Samantha Diaz

Looking for the perfect Greek island getaway? Mykonos is calling your name! This gem in the Cyclades is an Instagrammer's paradise, with stunning sights at every corner. Mykonos Town, or Chora, is especially charming with its white-washed stone alleys, blue shutters, iconic windmills, and adorable churches. Plus, there are plenty of outdoor dining spots that will make your taste buds dance. Whether you're after epic parties or a peaceful retreat, Mykonos will leave you wanting more.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 130

Getting There and Getting Around Once you land at Mykonos International Airport or arrive at the island’s main port, your adventure begins. Taxis and buses are easy to find, but for a bit more fun and freedom, consider renting a scooter or ATV. Navigating the island’s narrow, winding roads is an experience in itself, leading you to hidden gems that you might otherwise miss.

Things to Do in Mykonos Explore Chora: Locally known as Chora, Mykonos Town is a traveler’s delight. Its classic Greek architecture, cozy tavernas, and charming churches make it a must-visit. Start your adventure with a leisurely stroll through its winding alleyways to discover hidden gems, art galleries, and quaint chapels. Boni’s Windmill: For a breathtaking view, hike up to Boni's Windmill. The solitary windmill is picturesque, but the panoramic vistas over Mykonos Town are the real showstoppers. Kato Mili Windmills: These iconic windmills are close to the Little Venice waterfront. Visit early in the day to avoid the crowds and enjoy the serene atmosphere. Little Venice: This vibrant area is where the heart of the town meets the sea. It's perfect for a daytime visit and even better at sunset with a glass of wine in hand. Paraportiani Church: The most photographed church on the island, Paraportiani, is best visited early to appreciate its unique, rocky structure without the crowds.

Where to Eat in Mykonos

Souvlaki Story: For a taste of authentic Greek cuisine, Souvlaki Story is a must-visit. Their menu features mouthwatering souvlaki, gyros, and vegetarian options like grilled halloumi and falafel. Giora’s Bakery: This historic bakery, run by the same family for over two centuries, offers a delightful array of freshly baked goods. Don’t miss their famous baklava and classic orange pie. Leonidas Snack Bar: A hidden gem in Mykonos Town, Leonidas serves top-notch pork souvlaki and other delicious treats. Raya Restaurant: Discover a remarkable setting by the shores of Mykonos Town, where Mediterranean cuisine comes to life using the freshest local ingredients.

Beaches and Day Trips Mykonos is famous for its stunning beaches. Plintri Beach (Super Paradise Beach) offers pristine turquoise waters and a vibrant atmosphere. For a more secluded experience, Ftelia Beach and Lia Beach are perfect choices. Kalafati Beach is ideal for water sports enthusiasts. For a taste of ancient history, hop on a boat to the nearby island of Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Delos is said to be the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, and its ruins offer a fascinating peek into the past.

Mykonos is a magical destination with something for everyone. Whether you’re exploring Chora’s winding streets, lounging on a pristine beach, or savoring delicious Greek cuisine, this island will capture your heart. Enjoy every moment and make unforgettable memories on this enchanting Greek island! BLOOM MAGAZINE | 131
