about the cover When the time came to select the perfect location for Bloom's Women of the Year winner's cover photo, we had a brilliant plan in mind. We decided to seamlessly integrate it with our inaugural event – the 'Women in Workers' Comp' coffee book photoshoot. This choice allowed us to achieve two goals at once: create captivating content for the coffee book and keep it a secret from our esteemed winner, Isabel Dovale. The meticulous planning paid off, and it was all thanks to the incredible women who participated in the shoot. The day was truly one for the books, filled with laughter, camaraderie, and shared excitement. We're eagerly looking forward to the next photoshoot and to see the coffee book come to life.

Written by Mari Diaz I feel incredibly blessed to sit down with Isabel Dovale, known affectionately as Isabel to many, for this exclusive interview. Isabel is not only an incredible leader in the Worker's Compensation and Risk Management arena but also a dear friend who radiates passion and love for her community. I am overjoyed to share Isabel's extraordinary journey as she has been named the Woman of the Year by Bloom Magazine. Her story is a testament to dedication, perseverance, and the profound impact one person can have on the lives of many. Isabel Dovale's professional odyssey commenced over three decades ago when she took her first steps into the complex universe of insurance and healthcare. Her childhood dream was to make a difference in people's lives, and the field of medicine beckoned to her. However, life had its own plans. She married early, embraced motherhood, and set forth on a path that deviated from her initial aspirations. Yet, Isabel remained steadfast in her determination to keep healthcare at the core of her life. She pursued an undergraduate degree in healthcare administration, laying the foundation for her future endeavors. Then, in the midst of the global pandemic in 2020, Isabel achieved something truly remarkable—she earned her Master's Degree in Global Business Administration.
Her journey stands as a shining testament that it is never too late to chase your dreams, provided determination and persistence guide your way. Isabel's life path has been marked by diverse experiences that allowed her to touch lives in multifaceted roles, both as an administrator and as a patient advocate. Her career has encompassed a plethora of roles in physician's practices, health plans, hospital systems, and government subsidy programs. From utilization management to telephonic and field case management, claims handling to contract negotiations, Isabel's skill set knows no bounds. Her formal education, combined with her profound work ethic, has forged her into a well-rounded expert in Healthcare, Insurance, and Risk Management. Isabel has taken it upon herself to mentor current and future generations, a responsibility she carries with immense pride, knowing that her accomplishments have left an indelible mark on countless lives. Isabel's guiding philosophy in life is simple yet profound: "Treat others as you wish to be treated." This guiding principle permeates every aspect of her personal and professional life. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 13
Isabel stresses that these qualities are the cornerstones of successful outcomes and accomplishments. There's no secret formula, only the authenticity of being genuine, caring, and deeply believing that our actions can create a ripple effect in someone's life. Through her journey, Isabel has been fortunate to cross paths with exceptional professionals, some of whom have become her "friends/family." In the realms of Healthcare, Insurance, and Risk Management, Isabel recognizes the privilege they all share in utilizing their skills to serve others. While Isabel is tirelessly dedicated to her profession, she understands the importance of self-care. She believes that many of us often forget that we are more than our jobs, emphasizing, "WE ARE PEOPLE." In order to provide the best of ourselves to others, we must prioritize ourselves. Isabel finds solace in connecting with nature, with the beach and the park being her sanctuaries. Returning to life's simple pleasures, like reading a good book or dancing to any genre of music, rekindles her spirits. Dancing, in particular, brings out the joyful, carefree, and even goofy side of Isabel, reminding her of the importance of embracing the simple joys in life. Isabel is not only a leader in her field but also a proud mother of two adult children, Nichole and Michael. She has the joy of being a grandma to Austin, a smart and funny 2-year-old toddler. For Isabel, family and friends who become like family hold the topmost priority. She considers herself a true people person, relishing the human connections she forms at every level. Isabel acknowledges that life presents daily challenges, and preserving these treasured relationships requires diligent effort. Isabel Dovale's journey may not have unfolded exactly as she initially envisioned, but it has brought her to where she was meant to be. Her story is a testament to her resilience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to both her professional and personal pursuits. In an interview conducted by Mari Diaz, Beth shared insights into her multifaceted life and her philosophy on work and self-care. Beth's role as a supervisor embodies her enthusiasm and genuine desire to create a positive impact on her team. She believes in treating everyone with respect and kindness, offering coaching, mentorship, and friendship, and being there to listen when someone requires her support. Beth isn't one to shy away from challenges; in fact, she's unafraid to get her hands dirty when the situation demands it. The most rewarding aspect of Beth's work lies in witnessing the growth of her team members. She derives immense satisfaction from nurturing individuals who have never worked in compensation and guiding them into becoming exceptional adjusters. The heartfelt thanks from those she has helped along the way are the ultimate rewards in her eyes. Beth's mornings are characterized by a lively routine as she jumps out of bed with gusto to embrace the day ahead. Fueled by her love for coffee, she quickly gets herself ready for the day's tasks. However, when it comes to self-care, Beth openly admits that it's something she often puts on the back burner. As a devoted single mother for many years, her children and her job took precedence, leaving little time for herself. One of Beth's most cherished strengths is her ability to forgive. Others describe her as funny, kind, and strong, qualities that undoubtedly contribute to her effectiveness as a supervisor and mentor. Music is a source of solace and joy for Beth, with a playlist that includes the likes of Van Morrison, Diana Ross and the Supremes, and many more. While Beth's days are currently filled with a bustling career, she admits that retirement is something she looks forward to in the future. It's a well-deserved rest that she knows is a few years down the road, but it's a prospect that she finds increasingly appealing. For Beth, self-care means staying positive even in the most stressful situations. It's a practice of letting go of unnecessary burdens, not just for her stress levels but also for her peace of mind. Beth is a unique combination of both a morning bird and a night owl. While she may not enjoy getting up in the morning, once she's up, she's ready to tackle the day. At times, you might even find her watching a captivating movie at 3:00 am on a work night. She's a coffee enthusiast who enjoys a cup of joe to kickstart her day. When it comes to her palate, Beth has a love for both sweet and savory, with a hint of spice to add some zest to her life. Beth's purse is a reflection of her practicality and faith. In her bag, you'll always find her wallet, hand sanitizer, keys, lip gloss, and her Rosary Beads, a symbol of her spirituality and a reminder of the importance of faith in her life. Beth inspires other women by simply being herself— modest, compassionate, and always striving for personal growth. She believes in treating everyone with kindness and understanding, bringing laughter and empathy to those around her. She also celebrates the accomplishments of other women by offering compliments and recognition for their achievements, whether it's in their careers or personal lives. Her admiration extends to women who stand up for their beliefs and embrace diversity and inclusivity. She draws inspiration from her mother, who taught her to embrace everyone regardless of their background or beliefs. Additionally, she deeply respects women like Christine Jermin, smart and compassionate individuals who make a positive impact on the world and their families. Beth Swonger's philosophy in workers' compensation is as simple as it is impactful: treat everyone with respect and kindness, and you will receive the same in return. Her unwavering commitment to compassion, both in her professional and personal life, makes her a beacon of inspiration for those around her. With her multi-faceted approach to life, Beth continues to shine brightly as a mentor, mother, and dedicated leader.

Jenna Ando
A Woman of Empowerment and Resilience Balancing work and life is an ongoing learning process for Jenna, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. She has learned the importance of recognizing when to "call it a day" for the sake of her mental well-being and family's happiness. Jenna understands that her children need a "happy" mom more than a "perfect" one.
Meet Jenna Ando, an Account Manager at CorVel Corporation; she's a driving force for positive change. Her multifaceted roles at work are complemented by her unwavering commitment to family and her passion for empowering women. At the core of Jenna's heart lies her family. Through random conversations, Jenna has discovered the profound value of genuine connections. The women who surround Jenna serve as daily inspirations. She is fortunate to have a tribe of strong, brilliant, and determined women who have shown her the way. They've demonstrated that it's never too late to chase dreams, persevere through challenges, and love unconditionally in the face of adversity. A typical day for Jenna is a bustling mix of responsibilities, routines, and moments of self-care. Her mornings start with a cherished cup of coffee, followed by the joyful chaos of preparing her family for the day. Work plays a significant role, but the true highlights are picking up her children from school and witnessing their radiant smiles.
Empowering women isn't just a passion for Jenna; it's a way of life. She believes that empowering others doesn't always demand grand gestures. A simple "Yasss girl" has the power to brighten someone's day and strengthen collective resilience. Jenna is a firm believer in women supporting women to conquer life's challenges.
Jenna's legacy is deeply intertwined with her family. Despite life's unexpected twists, she's built a family she's immensely proud of. Her children reflect her values, and her legacy is instilling in them the importance of being genuinely good people. In her career, Jenna found her defining moment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adapting to remote work while caring for her young children was a formidable challenge, but it made her a better team member, granted precious time with her children, and deepened her bond with her husband.
If Jenna could pursue her dreams without fear of failure, she would eagerly return to school to earn her master's degree. This aspiration has patiently awaited its moment, delayed by the responsibilities of life. But Jenna's determination remains unswayed.
If Jenna could send a note to herself in 2030, it would be a reassuring message: "See, I told you - you got this!" Life is a perpetual journey of growth and self-assurance, and the future holds boundless possibilities.
Life often introduces us to transformative "firsts," and Jenna's journey is no exception. Becoming a mother brought her an array of first-time experiences, from the heartwarming moments to the occasional chaos of parenthood. However, her most transformative "first" was her honeymoon in Japan, a journey that broadened her horizons beyond the United States. Celebrating women's achievements is a fundamental part of Jenna's philosophy. She believes in recognizing the small victories, whether through casual gatherings, virtual Zoom dates with friends, or lively group texts. Jenna celebrates the journey itself as a worthy endeavor.
In conclusion, Jenna Ando's life is a testament to the enduring values of empowerment, family, and resilience. Her journey is an inspiration, a reminder of the importance of uplifting others, cherishing the small victories, and embracing the adventure of self-discovery. Michael Anderson A Leader in Workers' Compensation Michael's weekly agenda presents a dynamic blend of activities. He dedicates his time to cultivating relationships with both existing clients, ensuring their continued satisfaction, and prospective clients, a vital component of driving the company's growth. His unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional service extends to nurturing bonds with potential clients. Additionally, Michael relishes opportunities to participate in regional conferences and conduct quarterly stewardship meetings with clients. These activities underscore his unwavering dedication to building strong and lasting client partnerships.
In an exclusive interview with Bloom Magazine, we had the privilege of sitting down with Michael Anderson, Senior Executive National Sales at TRIUNE Health Group. Michael's impressive career in the workers' compensation industry spans over two decades, making him a highly respected figure in the field. In this comprehensive discussion, we explore Michael's remarkable journey, gain valuable insights into the industry, and celebrate his personal and professional achievements.
The workers' compensation landscape has undergone significant transformation since Michael's entry into the field. Data has emerged as a powerful force, directly influencing outcomes by reducing medical expenses and enhancing the return-to-work (RTW) process. While these advancements hold great promise, concerns surrounding opioid utilization continue to persist, despite strategic interventions by Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs). The overutilization of physical therapy services also remains a pressing concern, prompting proactive measures by employers to address this issue.
Michael's introduction to the workers' compensation industry was a seamless fusion of his educational background and career aspirations. With a solid foundation in Public Health/Safety & Risk Management, he discovered that his academic pursuits harmonized perfectly with the industry's objectives. Remarkably, Michael admits that prior to joining this field, he was entirely unaware of the existence of the workers' compensation industry —an intriguing testament to the unexpected and diverse career opportunities life can unveil.
Michael's life story is characterized by remarkable achievements, including his 13-year tenure in the US Army— an experience that profoundly shaped his character. Equally commendable is his distinction as the first member of his family to attain a college degree, a milestone that has inspired his younger brother to follow a similar path. Michael's adventurous spirit has led him to undertake daring feats, such as Australian rappelling, during his military service.
Central to Michael's repertoire of essential skills is the art of effective communication. Serving as the crucial link between medical updates and injured workers and their families, the ability to convey information clearly and empathetically is paramount. At the dinner table growing up, I was able to witness firsthand, through my parents, the gratitude that comes from helping and serving others. They would tell us stories at the dinner table. Check C. Kam, MD Championing Workers' Compensation Care
Dr. Kam: In the workers' compensation industry, I
believe
that
we

significant
improvements by streamlining processes. For example, workers with orthopedic injuries would benefit by seeking care first from one of our orthopedic walk-in clinics or scheduling a physician’s same-day appointment, rather than seeking care from a general medical urgent care center. This approach saves time, reduces costs, and minimizes patient frustration. Bloom Magazine: It's clear that efficient communication is vital in workers' compensation cases. How do you ensure clear and precise communication among all involved parties? In this exclusive interview with "Bloom Magazine, we have the privilege of sitting down with Dr. Check C. I’m motivated to make a difference by treating all patients – including workers' compensation patients - with dignity, respect, and professionalism. Bloom Magazine: Your philosophy of treating injured workers with compassion and empathy is commendable. What changes or improvements do you believe can be made in the workers' compensation industry to enhance patient care further?
Dr. Kam: Clear communication is a key to success in managing workers' compensation cases. I avoid medical jargon, speak slowly and precisely, and ensure that everyone involved understands the treatment plans. Jadell Mendez
Founder and CEO of MEDTeam Care Management, Inc.
Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Jadell Mendez, the President and CEO of MEDTeam Care Management, Inc., an esteemed expert in the field of medical case management. With over two decades of experience in the workers' compensation industry, Jadell has invaluable insights to share about the role of nurse case managers and when their involvement is most crucial. Bloom Magazine: Thank you for joining us today, Jadell. To begin, could you tell us a bit about MEDTeam Care Management and your journey in the field? Jadell Mendez: Absolutely, it's a pleasure to be here. MEDTeam Care Management was founded in 2020 with the goal of providing top-notch medical case management services. Prior to establishing the company, I spent 20 years working alongside multiple claim adjusters and employers in the workers' compensation industry, serving clients from small independent locals to nationwide multi-level employers in Florida. Throughout those years, I had the opportunity to coordinate care for a wide range of cases, from minor injuries to catastrophic level cases. This extensive experience helped me identify the essential elements of an effective medical case management team. We believe in the power of collaboration and early communication to ensure the best outcomes for all parties involved. Bloom Magazine: That's commendable, Jadell. Given your extensive background, could you share your perspective on when it's most beneficial to involve a nurse case manager in workers' compensation claims?
Jadell Mendez: Certainly. Nurse case managers play a vital role in ensuring efficient medical care, cost control, and favorable outcomes for injured employees. It's essential to establish clear guidelines for their involvement. Based on my experience, I can highlight some key criteria for triggering nurse case manager involvement. Severe Injuries: In cases involving severe injuries, such as brain and brain stem injuries, catastrophic injuries, spinal cord damage, amputation of limbs, or third-degree burns, the expertise of a nurse case manager can be particularly beneficial. Complex Cases: When cases become complex due to narcotic addictions, a lack of medical improvement during treatment, suspected improper or inadequate treatment, employee noncompliance with doctor's instructions, or missed medical appointments, nurse case managers can help navigate these challenges. Specialist Referrals: If the initial medical provider refers the injured employee to a specialist, it's an excellent time to involve a nurse case manager to ensure seamless and timely coordination of care. Independent Medical Examinations: Nurse case managers should also be involved in the process to set up and coordinate an independent medical examinations to provide valuable input and ensure fairness. Bloom Magazine: Those are insightful criteria, Jadell. What are your thoughts on the role of nurse case managers in less severe cases? Jadell Mendez: In cases that are less severe but still significant, such as amputations of fingers or toes, burns covering limited skin areas, or injuries like sprains, strains, or fractures requiring time off work, nurse case managers can still make a positive impact. Their involvement can help expedite recovery, ensure proper treatment, and facilitate a smooth return to work, ultimately reducing the overall cost and duration of the claim. One of the most important aspects of a nurse case manager’s roll is to keep all parties involved in the claim handling process well informed of the injured worker’s (IW) medical and work status. This will include the claim adjusters, employers, risk managers and even attorneys which working in conjunction will be key players to find the best way to help the IW’s rehabilitation for a safe and quick return to work.
BLOOM MAGAZINE | 41
Bloom Magazine: That's a balanced perspective, Jadell. Could you tell us about how MEDTeam Care Management approaches the integration of nurse case managers into the claims process? Jadell Mendez: At MEDTeam Care Management, we believe in an integrated team approach. From the moment we are involved in a case, we work closely with all parties, including the injured employee, employer, claim adjusters, and medical providers. Early and open communication is key. We assist in selecting the right medical provider, creating alternative return-to-work programs, and monitoring the progress of the injured worker. Our goal is to ensure that no excessive costs are incurred, and we aim for the best possible outcome for all parties involved. Bloom Magazine: It's evident that collaboration is at the heart of your approach. Before we conclude, could you share any final thoughts or advice for those navigating the complex world of workers' compensation claims? Jadell Mendez: Absolutely. In the complex landscape of workers' compensation claims, involving a nurse case manager at the right time can be a game-changer. Clear guidelines and open communication are essential. I encourage employers and insurers to consider the expertise of nurse case managers, especially in cases where their involvement can lead to better outcomes for all stakeholders. It's about providing the best care and support for the injured worker while ensuring cost control and efficiency in the claims process. Sharing important information is a key to expedite the claim handling process in a fair way to all parties. We could mention for example, prior medical history, prior W/C claims, prior employments/jobs, current social situations, current family and support systems, financial situations, employer’s ability to modify job position based on current medical issue, etc. Bloom Magazine: Thank you, Jadell, for sharing your valuable insights and expertise with us today. Your perspective on the role of nurse case managers in workers' compensation claims is incredibly informative and enlightening. MEDTeam Care Management, under Jadell Mendez's leadership, embodies a commitment to excellence and collaboration in the field of medical case management, emphasizing the importance of nurse case managers in achieving successful outcomes in workers' compensation claims.

(CCMSI) has led the way as the gold standard third-party administrator for property and casualty programs since 1978, providing unrivaled workers’ compensation, liability, and property claims management. We bring together the best talent in the TPA industry and prioritize our client’s needs, goals, and expectations by utilizing innovative solutions, cutting-edge technology, and tailored approaches to claim services, loss control, managed care, internet claims analysis, and reporting services. As a privately held, 100% employee-owned company, CCMSI is accountable to our clients—not insurance carriers, brokers, or private equity funds, which empowers our team to make client-centric decisions and focus on longterm client value creation versus short-term financial performance. Our dedication to transparency and reputation for the highest quality client satisfaction, superior results, integrity, and promise fulfillment has earned us the respect of our clients and partners nationwide.
CCMSI does not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach and understands that each client comes to us with unique requirements. We listen and collaborate with them to deliver strategic, efficient, and cost-saving solutions and pride ourselves in exceeding expectations. Our client-focused approach has established CCMSI as the quality standard in our industry, with a client retention rate of 98%. We partner with self-insured groups and individual employers in diverse industries, including governmental, retail, manufacturing, healthcare, gaming, construction, transportation, and higher education. For the sixth consecutive year, CCMSI has been certified as a great workplace by the analysts at Great Place to Work®. Ensuring we have a positive work environment is essential to CCMSI’s success and future growth. Our culture allows us to attract and retain the highest quality staff and maintain the lowest turnover percentage in the industry, which provides continuity and consistent delivery of exceptional service for our clients. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 56
Without our greatest asset, our staff, we could not successfully deliver what matters most to our clients. CCMSI understands that strength and innovation are born from a diverse workforce—that assembling a team of individuals with divergent backgrounds and experiences enriches our company and how we serve our clients. Our Core Values and Principles are the driving forces behind our culture, philosophy, and claim-handling standards, as well as our recruiting, hiring, promoting, professional development, and compensation practices.
As a result, with collaborative efforts between our Corporate Claims Best Practices Committee, CCMSI’s Human Resources Department, several account managers, and key subject matter experts, we built and executed a comprehensive program strategy to recruit, train, and retain new adjusters through the CCMSI LevelUP Career Development Program. Touting an 85% achievement rate for those entering the program and a 90% retention rate for those who have graduated, LevelUP has been a tremendous success.
Our continued efforts and commitment to furthering a diverse, inclusive, and respectful workplace include appointing a chief diversity officer and installing a Diversity and Inclusion Policy that incorporates an annual Diversity Elective Day for employees to use at their discretion for observance, celebration, and/or service in honor of diversity and inclusion. CCMSI has over 1,500 employees from thirty-four offices who provide services for five hundred-plus individual self-insured employers, ten-plus captives, fortyplus primary insurance companies, and fifty-plus selfinsurance groups.
We designed the CCMSI LevelUP Career Development Program for individuals who want to apply their critical thinking, analytical, and customer service skills to an engaging career in the insurance industry. Through this immersive program, participants develop foundational skills and prepare to take on advanced professional roles within the company.
The Cornerstones of CCMSI’s Culture Team Member Ownership: As a 100% employeeowned company, each CCMSI team member is a vested owner, recognizing that the way to drive value in our company is to continue providing exceptional service to our clients. Manageable Caseloads and Claims Support: One of the ways we attract the best adjusters in the industry is by offering manageable caseloads (on average: 125 indemnity/225 medical-only files for workers’ compensation adjusters and 125 liability files for liability adjusters) and robust administrative support. Manageable caseloads permit their focus to remain on assisting the injured worker or claimant return to health and, as a result, closing claims swiftly and driving down our client’s cost of risk. Flexibility: We offer our adjusters flexible work schedules and work-from-home opportunities to allow for overall balance and growth as professionals and individuals. These cornerstones foster a culture that attracts the highest caliber team members focused on unparalleled client service. With an eye to the future, CCMSI began analyzing the number of staff who would be leaving the workforce in the coming years. As we continue to grow and expand and senior members plan for retirement, we recognize the need to replace outgoing personnel and develop a structured career development program for workers’ compensation and liability adjusters.
How is the LevelUP Career Pathway Program Structured?
LevelUP generally takes one year to complete and comprises four phases, incorporating work shadowing, eCourses, planned experiences, and assessments. Each phase establishes competency building blocks, such as learning CCMSI Best Practices, claim handling basics, how to conduct investigations, and opportunities to attend legal and claim reviews. LevelUP program participants are assigned mentors, who are some of the most respected professionals in the field, to answer questions, share their knowledge, and help mentees forge their career paths. To ensure participants' success and preparedness for the next phase, they are provided feedback and evaluated on claims handling comprehension and skill application. Once an individual graduates from the program, they are promoted to claim representative and presented with a certificate recognizing their achievement. To learn more about CCMSI’s LevelUP program, please visit https://www.ccmsi.com/LevelUP-program/ We are thrilled to share that CCMSI has formed an invaluable new partnership with Danville Area Community College (DACC), where students can earn a Claims Representative Certificate through a thirty-credit-hour, two-term program. In this unique partnership, CCMSI Senior Account Manager Kristi Weaver, ARM, AIC, SCLA, serves as DACC’s adjunct instructor for workers’ compensation courses, teaching weekly classes, writing the syllabus, and developing course materials. Kristi’s service in her full-time senior account manager role, in addition to her commitment to the success of the CCMSI/DACC partnership, is a testament to how strongly she believes in this program. After earning their certificate and meeting all eligibility requirements, graduates can apply for a paid eight-week internship with CCMSI, and upon completion, we may consider them for hire.

THE COMPLEXITIES OF WORKPLACE INJURIES Navigating the Road to Recovery Once a human being sustains an injury, the mindset of this person becomes much more complicated. There are a lot of balls in the air through other responsibilities outside of the injury itself. What if we started introductions to the workers' compensation arena with a view inside the implications of the mind of an injured worker to understand the loopholes that can cultivate feelings of failure so we can do everything in our power to set all parties up for success to win? Looking into the potential pitfalls can help proactivity measures of individuals involved along the claims administration process to help assist in the most successful road to recovery. One of the initial hurdles to address is the unrealistic expectations often held by injured workers as they embark on their recovery process. Naturally, individuals in such circumstances long for quick results and a swift return to their pre-injury state. However, it is essential to convey that recovery is a marathon, not a sprint. As healthcare providers, we must consistently remind them to be patient and reinforce the understanding that healing is a gradual process that may encounter setbacks. Shifting their focus from an ideal outcome to acknowledging incremental improvements and celebrating small victories can provide a much-needed sense of achievement and motivation to keep moving forward.
Written by Dr. Claire Muselman Workplace injuries have the potential to drastically alter the lives of individuals affected by them. Beyond the physical pain, these injuries also impose significant emotional and financial burdens. While workers' compensation programs aim to provide support, the journey to recovery is often challenging. As claims professionals, we must empathize with their experiences and better understand their challenges. Then why do we not start ANY training, education, onboarding, designation, or introduction to this arena with an understanding of the population we serve? Let's explore.
Furthermore, workplace injuries impose a significant emotional toll on individuals. Physical pain often intertwines with emotional distress, leading to a loss of identity and selfdoubt. The feeling of being less capable can result in a dramatic loss of confidence. We are responsible for stepping in and providing emotional support alongside the physical care we offer. Directing them toward support groups and therapists creates an environment that encourages them to share their struggles. Combining these resources with tools like positive self-talk and affirmations can help rebuild their self-belief and gradually restore their confidence.
BLOOM MAGAZINE | 59
In the journey of recovery, the past can cast a long shadow. Injured individuals may long for a time when they are uninjured, mainly if their injury has resulted in the loss of particular abilities or changed their career prospects. As trusted healthcare providers, we must guide them in embracing the present and the future rather than dwelling on the past. By helping them accept their new reality and focusing on their current circumstances and future possibilities, we can assist them in developing new goals and adapting to their situation. This might involve exploring new career paths, acquiring new skills, or finding alternative ways to engage in activities they once enjoyed. Mistakes made in the past, related to the injury or during the recovery process, can become substantial roadblocks to progress. The fear of repeating these mistakes can discourage them from taking necessary risks in their recovery journey. However, it is crucial to remind them that everyone makes mistakes, and these instances are valuable opportunities for learning and growth. Our role is to help them reframe these experiences, focusing on the lessons learned rather than the errors made. Each setback presents an opportunity for development and improvement, and with the right mindset, they can see these as stepping stones toward success. Fear of the future can also act as a pervasive barrier to recovery. Uncertainty about how their injury may affect their personal and professional life can feel overwhelming. However, we must encourage them to see change as a challenge and an opportunity. Change is inevitable, and while it can be uncomfortable, it often brings new possibilities. We must motivate them to confront their fears and embrace the uncertainty, helping them understand that every new day is a chance to create a different future. One of the most significant challenges injured workers face is the loss of control they feel due to their injury. They may perceive their destiny as at the mercy of healthcare providers, insurance companies, and legal proceedings. However, it is essential to help them reclaim their personal power and emphasize the role they can play in their recovery process. They can regain control over their lives by communicating their needs to us, actively participating in rehabilitation, and educating themselves about their rights under workers' compensation laws. Another common struggle is the perception of weakness associated with their injury. They may begin to believe that their damage makes them weaker or less capable than their peers. As healthcare providers, we must challenge this perception and help them recognize their unique strengths and qualities. Reminding them that their injury does not define them and that their worth extends beyond their physical abilities is essential. By setting realistic goals, celebrating small victories, and emphasizing their personal growth, we can help them build a sense of empowerment and resilience.
Finally, the significance of cultivating a positive mindset cannot be overstated. We must guide injured workers away from a cycle of self-pity and entitlement and toward positivity and gratitude. They can transform their perspective by focusing on aspects of their life they can control, such as their attitude, habits, and daily choices. This resilience allows them to navigate challenges with optimism and determination, redirecting their energy toward finding solutions and creating opportunities. The road to recovery from a workplace injury is a challenging journey filled with physical and emotional obstacles. However, injured workers can navigate these challenges with our support and their unwavering determination. They can reclaim their power, embrace change, cultivate a positive mindset, set achievable goals, and learn to see failure as another steppingstone to success. We are better equipped to provide empathetic and effective care by understanding their struggles and barriers. By offering them the proper support, fostering resilience, and empowering them to take charge of their journey, we can help them transform their challenges into opportunities and guide them toward a successful recovery.

What Is the Ideal Workload for Workers' Compensation Adjusters? Written by Lisa Lao
In the insurance industry, an ongoing debate surrounds the quest to pinpoint the perfect workloadfor workers' compensation claims adjusters. Various stakeholders, including adjusters, insurers, third-party administrators (TPAs), and employers, each bring their unique perspectives to the table. They all have their opinions on the ideal number of claims an adjuster should handle. However, it's crucial to acknowledge that there's no universal answer to the question of how many claims are too many. From the adjuster's standpoint, the goal is to maintain a consistent volume of claims that can be effectively handled without constantly firefighting. Adjusters do not want to be perpetually overwhelmed by excessive caseloads, as it hampers their ability to provide thorough attention to each claim. In such cases, failing to dedicate ample time to claimants can lead them to seek legal representation, unnecessarily inflating claim costs. Furthermore, excessive caseloads hinder adjusters from conducting comprehensive investigations, potentially resulting in undeserving claims being approved, or unrelated medical expenses getting reimbursed.
When adjusters are overwhelmed with too many claims, mistakes are bound to occur, leading to what is commonly referred to as "leakage." Leakage refers to losses incurred due to claim inaccuracies or inefficiencies. These errors significantly contribute to the overall cost of workers' compensation for employers. However, insurers often avoid acknowledging the role of inadequate claim handling in rising premiums. Even self-insured employers, who manage their own claims, struggle to determine the appropriate claims load for adjusters. Assigning a specific number to quantify caseload is often impractical because workers' compensation claims vary widely in size and complexity. For instance, a claim related to a finger fracture typically requires less time than one involving an amputated foot. Nevertheless, both claims are treated as a single entity when determining caseload. Several factors influence the number of claims an adjuster can effectively handle. One crucial factor is the adjuster's experience. A seasoned adjuster with decades of experience can handle a more extensive caseload compared to a novice still learning the intricacies of workers' compensation laws.
BLOOM MAGAZINE | 62
The jurisdiction in which an adjuster operates also plays a significant role. Different jurisdictions have varying requirements, with some demanding extensive paperwork and others imposing strict rules for returning claimants to work. Moreover, certain jurisdictions are more prone to attorney involvement, which can significantly impact an adjuster's workload. Another factor often overlooked is the industry of the injured employee's workplace. Industries with a high frequency of low-severity injuries allow adjusters to manage more claims efficiently compared to those dealing with high-severity injuries. Adjusters also adapt to their workload, often learning how to manipulate claim counts. Instead of promptly closing cases, overloaded adjusters might delay the process to keep their claim numbers high, which can lead to further delays in receiving new claims to work on. In reality, there is no precise number of claims that an adjuster should handle. While having a set number of claims may serve as a marker for workload management, a more effective approach for insurers and TPAs is to implement vigilant supervision. Engaged supervisors can review the adjusters' work, ensuring adherence to best practices while allowing adjusters to allocate their time effectively. Measuring adjusters based on their performance, rather than the quantity of claims, leads to a reduction in mistakes, timely investigations, decreased litigation rates, lower adjuster turnover, enhanced employee cooperation, fewer employer complaints, and reduced financial leakage. Ultimately, this approach benefits employers by curbing future workers' compensation costs. For employers unsure if their workers' compensation adjusters are managing an appropriate caseload, independent claim file audits can provide clarity. A claims auditor can assess the adjusters' workload, compliance with best practices, and the extent of financial leakage in claims. Seeking assistance in identifying an independent claims auditor can be a prudent step toward optimizing adjuster workloads and minimizing costs. The question of how many claims an adjuster should handle lacks a universal answer. It's essential to recognize that various factors, including experience, jurisdiction, and industry, influence an adjuster's workload. Rather than fixating on a specific number of claims, a focus on performance and diligent supervision can lead to more efficient claims handling, ultimately benefiting employers by reducing costs and improving overall claim quality.

It encompasses a wide array of initiatives and programs aimed at fostering a healthier and more balanced work environment. These initiatives may include fitness programs, stress management workshops, mental health support, and flexible work arrangements. The Significance of Workplace Wellness Boosted Employee Productivity: Healthy employees tend to be more productive. Physical fitness and mental alertness enable employees to carry out their tasks efficiently and effectively. Encouraging healthy habits and providing wellness programs can reduce absenteeism and the phenomenon of presenteeism, where employees are physically present but not fully engaged due to healthrelated issues.
Elevated Employee Morale and Job Satisfaction: A workplace that places a premium on wellness sends a clear message to its employees about their well-being. When workers feel that their employer genuinely cares about their health, they are more likely to derive satisfaction from their jobs. High job satisfaction often translates into increased employee retention rates and decreased turnover. Reduced Healthcare Costs: Companies investing in workplace wellness programs can enjoy financial benefits through decreased healthcare expenses. Healthy employees are less likely to require costly medical treatments, resulting in lower insurance premiums and reduced spending on employee health benefits. Enhanced Employee Engagement: Wellness initiatives can create a sense of community and belonging among employees. Engaged employees are more committed to their work and are more inclined to go the extra mile to contribute to their organization's success.
BLOOM MAGAZINE | 66
The question, "Is Workplace Wellness the Secret to a Productive and Happy Workforce?" warrants a resounding "yes." Integrating workplace wellness into an organization's culture is not merely a choice but a strategic imperative. The benefits encompass improved productivity, job satisfaction, and the physical and mental health of employees, as well as reduced healthcare costs and a positive corporate image for companies. In the ever-evolving landscape of the modern workplace, investing in the well-being of the workforce is not an option; it's a necessity for long-term success and sustainability. Workplace wellness, undeniably, holds the key to unlocking the potential of a productive and joyful workforce.
Stress Reduction: Work-related stress is a pervasive issue in today's workplaces. Chronic stress can lead to burnout and various health problems. Wellness initiatives that focus on stress management techniques, such as mindfulness and relaxation exercises, equip employees with effective stress-coping mechanisms. Enhanced Company Reputation: Companies that prioritize workplace wellness are often perceived more positively by potential employees and customers alike. A reputation for caring about employee well-being can make it easier to attract top talent and retain valuable staff members. Benefits for Employees Enhanced Physical Health: Workplace wellness programs typically include fitness initiatives, nutrition education, and preventive health measures. These components contribute to improved physical health, reduced risk of chronic diseases, and heightened energy levels. Improved Mental Health: Mental health support and stress management programs in the workplace help employees cope with anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. A mentally healthy workforce exhibits greater resilience and better adaptability when facing difficulties. Work-Life Balance: Policies that promote work-life balance and flexible work arrangements contribute to employees' overall well-being. They can effectively manage their personal lives while fulfilling their professional responsibilities. Personal Development: Wellness programs often provide opportunities for personal growth and development. Employees can acquire new skills, expand their knowledge, and pursue a healthier lifestyle.

Preventing Shoulder Injuries in the Workplace Written by Anand P. Panchal, DO Shoulder injuries are a common concern in the workplace, often leading to long-term disability and substantial workers' compensation claims. As work comp adjusters and nurse case managers play a crucial role in managing and mitigating these injuries, it is essential to understand effective prevention strategies. In this article, we will investigate proactive measures geared towards minimizing shoulder injuries and alleviating shoulder pain among workers.
Ergonomics and Workspace Design: Workstation Assessment: 1. Evaluate the ergonomics of workstations to ensure proper alignment of shoulders during tasks. 2. Consider adjustable desks and chairs to accommodate varying body sizes and promote neutral shoulder positions. Tools and Equipment: 1. Provide ergonomic tools and equipment designed to reduce strain on the shoulders. 2. Encourage the use of assistive devices i.e., lift assists, to minimize heavy lifting and shoulder stress.
Training and Education: Proper Lifting Techniques: 1. Employ regular training sessions on correct lifting techniques to prevent shoulder injuries. 2. Emphasize the importance of using the legs rather than the back and shoulders during lifting activities. Posture Awareness: 1. Educate employees about maintaining good posture while sitting and standing. 2. Promote the use of ergonomic chairs and support devices to encourage proper shoulder alignment.
Physical Conditioning Programs: Stretching and Warm-up Exercises: 1. Implement pre-shift stretching routines to prepare the shoulders and upper body for physical work. 2. Encourage regular breaks for stretching, particularly during jobs that involve repetitive tasks. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 69
Job Rotation and Task Variation: Rotational Work Assignments: 1.Implement job rotation schedules to vary tasks and reduce repetitive strain on the shoulders. 2.Ensure adequate training for employees transitioning between different job roles. Modified Duty Programs: 1.Establish modified duty programs to accommodate workers recovering from shoulder injuries, such as jobs that avoid prolonged or repetitive overhead use of the arm. 2.Collaborate with healthcare providers to determine suitable modified duties.
Environmental Considerations: Strength Training: 1.Develop workplace fitness programs that focus on shoulder-strengthening and flexibility exercises. 2.Provide access to on-site or off-site fitness facilities to promote overall musculoskeletal health.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Proper Fitting and Usage: 1.Ensure that workers are provided with well-fitted PPE, including shoulder protection if necessary. 2.Regularly inspect and replace damaged or outdated PPE to ensure maximum effectiveness. Task-specific PPE: 1.Identify tasks that pose a higher risk of shoulder injury and implement task-specific protective gear when appropriate. 2.Provide training on the correct use and maintenance of task-specific PPE.
Early Intervention and Reporting: Encourage Open Communication: 1.Foster a culture of open communication where workers feel comfortable reporting discomfort or early signs of shoulder pain. 2.Train supervisors to recognize and respond promptly to employee concerns regarding shoulder pain and/or injuries. Access to Healthcare Professionals: 1.Facilitate easy access to healthcare professionals for timely assessment and intervention. 2.Develop a system for expedited medical evaluations for shoulder-related concerns.
BLOOM MAGAZINE | 70
Temperature Control: 1.Maintain a comfortable working temperature to prevent muscle stiffness and tension. 2.Provide appropriate clothing and temperature control measures for outdoor work. Slip and Fall Prevention: 1.Implement measures to prevent slip and fall accidents that can lead to shoulder injuries. 2.Use anti-slip surfaces and proper lighting in areas prone to accidents. Preventing shoulder injuries in the workplace requires a comprehensive approach that addresses ergonomic, educational, and healthcare aspects. Work comp adjusters and nurse case managers play a vital role in advocating for and supporting these prevention strategies, ultimately reducing the frequency and severity of shoulder injuries among workers. By fostering a culture of safety, providing adequate training, and promoting early intervention, employers can create a healthier and more productive work environment while minimizing the impact on workers' compensation claims.

Return to the Office? 6 Expert Tips for a Seamless Transition Written by Lisa Lao
BLOOM MAGAZINE | 72
The moment many have anticipated has finally arrived – the official announcement from your employer regarding the return-to-office date. The mixture of emotions that follows this news can be overwhelming, ranging from excitement to anxiety. After a prolonged period of remote work, reacclimating to a pre-pandemic office environment calls for some thoughtful preparation and a shift in mindset. To help you navigate this transition smoothly, we've compiled six valuable tips. 1. Streamline Your Morning Routine Do you often find yourself standing in front of your closet, pondering what to wear? The process of making multiple decisions before your workday even begins can be not only overwhelming but also time-consuming and mentally exhausting. While adopting a uniform like some prominent business figures might be too extreme, simplifying your morning routine can reduce stress significantly. The evening before your return to the office, plan your outfit, prepare and pack your lunch, organize your work bag, and ensure your vehicle has sufficient gas or your public transportation pass is ready to go. 2. Depart Early Returning to the office might feel like your very first day on the job. To minimize unnecessary stress, consider leaving home earlier than usual. This approach accounts for potential changes in traffic patterns and allows you to arrive at the office feeling unrushed and in a positive frame of mind. During your commute, infuse some motivation by listening to an energizing playlist or tuning into an inspiring podcast. 3. Don't Forget Your Headphones After a year or more of working in your controlled home environment, transitioning back to the office can expose you to new distractions. When you require uninterrupted focus, wearing headphones sends a clear signal to your colleagues that you're in a work-oriented state. Additionally, immersing yourself in your favorite music or a captivating podcast can add a touch of joy and comfort to your workday. As you venture back to the office, remember to incorporate activities that bring you happiness throughout the day.
BLOOM MAGAZINE | 73
4. Explore Flexible Work Options Many workplaces are extending flexible work arrangements as employees return to the office. These options may include continuing to work remotely for a portion of the week or having flexible hours to stagger office attendance. Take this opportunity to familiarize yourself with your workplace's flexibility policies and accommodations. If you have the option, gradually easing into the office routine can make the transition more comfortable. 5. Embrace Your Lunch Break Returning to the office can sometimes tempt you to revert to old habits, such as staying glued to your desk throughout the day. While productivity is crucial, self-care is equally essential. There's nothing wrong with taking periodic mental breaks, whether you're working in the office or remotely. A beneficial practice is to step away from your desk during lunchtime to give your eyes and mind the well-deserved rest they need. 6. Cultivate Gratitude The past year has been emotionally challenging for many, and returning to the office will undoubtedly require an adjustment period. Be kind to yourself during this transition and make gratitude a daily practice. Focus on the positive aspects of returning to the office, such as reconnecting with coworkers, to foster a more optimistic outlook. If you find yourself struggling with the shift, remember that you're not alone. Take a deep breath, prepare in advance, and extend compassion to yourself – you're wellequipped to navigate this transition successfully. As the return-to-office date draws nearer, these six tips can serve as your guide to ensuring a smooth and stress-free transition. Embrace this change with confidence, and you'll find yourself settling back into the office routine with ease.

Defying the Odds Mr. Chafin's Remarkable Journey to Recovery with the Support of PAM Health, Quinlan Medical Case Management, and CorVel
In the face of adversity, the human spirit often shines its brightest, proving that with determination, unwavering support, and top-notch healthcare, anything is possible. This is precisely the story of Mr. Chafin, a man who defied the odds and embarked on an incredible journey of recovery, thanks to the exceptional care provided by PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Jupiter, in collaboration with QMM Case Management and CORVEL, the TPA administering his care. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 76
Mr. Chafin's odyssey began on April 11, 2023, when a tragic workplace accident resulted in a severe lower extremity crush injury caused by an excavator. Rushed to St. Mary's Hospital, his life hung in the balance. During the journey to the hospital, Mr. Chafin faced two near-death experiences, briefly leaving the realm of the living. In his recollection, the second instance brought forth an ethereal encounter with a bright light, imbued with feelings of peace and warmth. Miraculously, the skilled medical team at St. Mary's successfully revived him using AED paddles, setting the stage for his arduous journey to recovery. After surviving this harrowing ordeal, Mr. Chafin faced an arduous eight-month hospital stay. Subsequently, he underwent a two-week medically induced coma, a crucial step to optimize his chances of regaining functionality. When he finally awoke, he grappled with amnesia, believing it was the year 2007 and unable to recognize his own family. This journey of physical and emotional rehabilitation was a daunting challenge, one that he undertook with courage, determination, and the unwavering support of his loving family. Throughout his recovery, Mr. Chafin's indomitable spirit shone brightly. He drew strength from his community involvement, serving as the coach of the Lake Lytal Gators Youth Football Team and contributing as a board member. Furthermore, his status as a licensed barber attested to his relentless pursuit of a full and vibrant life. Central to Mr. Chafin's triumphant journey was the unwavering dedication and exceptional care provided by PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Jupiter, where he was admitted on December 13, 2023.
The compassion and commitment of the PAM Health team, coupled with the seamless collaboration with QMM Case Management and CORVEL, created a profound support system that played a pivotal role in Mr. Chafin's remarkable recovery. Together, they transformed adversity into a story of hope, resilience, and healing. Jill Belden, Workers' Compensation Program Director for Florida, expressed the privilege of being part of an injured worker's recovery journey. She noted, "Mr. Chafin has been through so much, and we are so happy to support him in his goal to return home to his family." Nikki Mccartin, Director of Strategic Initiatives, shared, "It is an absolute honor to be a part of Mr. Chafin's recovery. He has been through far more than just physical injury but also emotional pains in being away from his family and trauma from all that he's been through in the last 8 months. We are excited to welcome him to our PAMily and make this his home away from home while he works vigorously to regain function." Solange Dagress, Clinical Liaison, remarked, "Mr. Chafin has persevered through unbelievable physical and emotional challenges during his recovery, and we are so happy to help him finally return home to his loved ones after a very long journey. His biggest goal was to get home in time to spend the holidays with his girls, and I'm so thankful we can help him achieve that dream." PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Jupiter stands as a symbol of hope and healing. Equipped with state-of-the-art therapeutic equipment and staffed by a compassionate team of medical experts, it offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care to help patients regain their independence.

Crafting Your Ultimate Happiness Blueprint Written by Mari Diaz
Whether you write it down in a journal, hang it as a poster on your wall, or keep it on your desk, a "Joy List" is a simple yet powerful reminder of all the positive aspects and pleasures life has to offer. Creating your own joy is an empowering practice that allows you to embrace happiness in your everyday life. By acknowledging and cherishing the sources of joy, you can enhance positivity and find happiness in the simple moments that make life truly wonderful. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 81
Here, I present some of my favorite simple and enjoyable ways to create your own joy and find happiness in your daily life. These methods are practical and can help you cultivate a fulfilling and joyful existence. Gratitude: The Gateway to Joy Gratitude is a powerful tool that can instantly shift our focus from what's lacking in our lives to what we already have. Cultivating a daily gratitude practice trains our minds to seek out and appreciate the small moments of joy. Take a few minutes each day to reflect on the things you are grateful for, whether it's the support of loved ones, a beautiful sunset, or your own personal achievements. Gratitude opens the door to joy by fostering a positive mindset. Embrace Self-Care Self-care is often seen as a luxury, but it's crucial for our overall well-being and happiness. Carve out time for activities that rejuvenate and nourish your mind, body, and soul. It could be as simple as taking a long bath, going for a nature walk, practicing meditation, or indulging in a hobby you love. Prioritizing self-care helps create a sense of balance and contentment, allowing joy to flow into your daily life.
Seek Meaningful Connections Human connections play a vital role in our happiness. Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you. Nurture relationships with family, friends, and loved ones. Engage in meaningful conversations, express your emotions, and be open to receiving love and support. Meaningful connections provide a sense of belonging, deepen our joy, and remind us of the importance of human connection. Cultivate Mindfulness Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the current moment without judgment. It allows us to appreciate the beauty and wonder of life's simplest pleasures. By cultivating mindfulness, we can become more aware of the present moment, savoring each experience with a sense of joy and gratitude. Practice mindfulness through meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simply paying attention to your senses as you go about your day.
BLOOM MAGAZINE | 82
Pursue Passions and Purpose Discovering and pursuing your passions and purpose in life can bring immense joy and fulfillment. Engage in activities that light you up and align with your values and interests. Whether it's painting, writing, volunteering, or starting a new venture, follow your heart and invest time in what brings you joy. When you pursue your passions, you infuse your life with purpose, creating a sense of deep satisfaction and contentment. Embrace Optimism and Positive Thinking Our thoughts shape our reality, and adopting an optimistic mindset can significantly impact our overall happiness. Choose to focus on the positive aspects of life, even in challenging times. Challenge negative self-talk and replace it with empowering affirmations. Surround yourself with uplifting and inspiring content, such as books, podcasts, or quotes. By consciously shifting your perspective towards positivity, you invite more joy into your life. Creating your own joy is an empowering journey that starts from within. By practicing gratitude, taking care of yourself, nurturing meaningful connections, staying present in the moment, pursuing your passions, and maintaining a positive outlook, you can cultivate a life full of happiness and fulfillment. Remember, joy comes from within and is not reliant on external circumstances. Embrace these practices and let your inner joy shine brightly, spreading happiness to those around you. Start today and witness the beautiful transformation of your life into a symphony of joy and contentment. #JUSTBEGIN

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 86
Libra (September 23 - October 22): Keep Your Body Flexible Balancing life is crucial for Libras. Regular stretching or occasional exercise is essential to ensure your body is in harmony. Stretching not only prevents injuries but also reduces stress and increases serotonin levels. Scorpio (October 23 - November 21): Write Down Your Thoughts Scorpios may seem mysterious, but they have deep emotions. Journaling can be a great way to release and analyze these feelings. It helps prevent negativity from building up and keeps your mind clear. Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21): Explore Cooking Sagittarians love adventure, but they might feel restless sometimes. While traveling might not always be possible, trying out new recipes can satisfy that craving for exploration. You'll learn about different cultures and add some healthier foods to your diet. Capricorn (December 22 - January 19): Stay Hydrated Practical Capricorns can benefit from drinking more water. It's simple yet highly effective. Staying hydrated not only keeps your skin looking good but also reduces aches and pains, improves blood circulation, and detoxifies your body.
Cancer (June 21 - July 22): Take Relaxing Baths Cancer signs are known for their caring nature, but they can also feel drained. Baths can be really restorative for them, especially with added elements like crystals, flowers, herbs, or Epsom salts. These can help you relax your mind, body, and soul. Leo (July 23 - August 22): Connect with Loved Ones Leos love being in the spotlight and connecting with others. In 2024, make an effort to chat with your loved ones over video calls. Virgo (August 23 - September 22): Try Meditation Virgos are known for their precision and planning, but this can also make them stressed. So, for the upcoming year, set a goal to meditate daily, even if it's just for a couple of minutes. Meditation will help you let go of some of that need for control and make you feel more relaxed and centered.
Aquarius (January 20 - February 18): Give Yoga a Try Aquarians are rational and idealistic, which can sometimes make them feel detached. Yoga is a great way to connect your mind and body, making you feel more balanced and in tune with your emotions. Pisces (February 19 - March 20): Work with Healing Crystals Pisces are dreamers, and they have a unique ability to tap into the intangible. Consider working with healing crystals like amethyst or aquamarine. Amethyst can promote relaxation and better sleep, while aquamarine can empower effective communication. By following these wellness habits tailored to your zodiac sign, you can start 2024 in a positive way. Remember, astrology is a fun way to get some guidance, but what truly matters is that you take time for self-care and personal growth in the coming year. As you step into 2024, let your zodiac sign guide you toward the best self-care habits. May the year ahead be filled with well-being, relaxation, and personal renewal, all guided by the cosmic wisdom of your zodiac sign.

A Scenic Journey on the Bernina Express and a Day in St. Moritz Written & photos by Samantha Diaz Nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, the Bernina Express promises a journey like no other – a breathtaking ride through snow-capped peaks, charming villages, and awe-inspiring landscapes. As I embarked on this iconic train adventure, little did I know that it would not only be a visual feast but an unforgettable experience that would lead me to the glamorous town of St. Moritz. The Bernina Express, renowned for its panoramic views, is a marvel of engineering, navigating through the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Rhaetian Railway. Boarding the train in Tirano, Italy, the anticipation was palpable as I settled into my comfortable seat. The journey commenced, and soon, the scenery outside the large windows unfolded like a masterpiece.

As the train ascended through the Alps, I was treated to a mesmerizing display of nature's grandeur. Snowcovered peaks glistened in the sunlight, and quaint villages dotted the landscape like tiny jewels. The train's route, featuring the iconic Landwasser Viaduct and the spiraling Brusio Circular Viaduct, added a touch of drama to the already enchanting surroundings. Upon reaching the pinnacle of the journey, the Bernina Pass, I marveled at the pristine beauty that surrounded me. The vibrant hues of alpine meadows contrasted with the stark white of the snow, creating a scene that seemed straight out of a postcard. It was a moment to savor – one that encapsulated the magic of travel. As the Bernina Express descended towards St. Moritz, my excitement reached new heights. St. Moritz, synonymous with luxury and sophistication, is a haven for winter sports enthusiasts and discerning travelers. Stepping off the train, I found myself in a town that seamlessly blended tradition with modernity. The crisp mountain air greeted me as I strolled along the pristine shores of Lake St. Moritz. The stunning backdrop of snow-capped peaks reflected in the crystal-clear waters created a picture-perfect setting. The town's chic boutiques, offering everything from designer fashion to exquisite Swiss watches, added a touch of glamour to the experience. Eager to explore the winter wonderland, I took a funicular ride to the summit of Muottas Muragl. The panoramic views from the top were nothing short of breathtaking, with the vast expanse of the Engadin Valley laid out before me. The crisp mountain air, coupled with the adrenaline rush of being surrounded by such natural beauty, made for a truly exhilarating experience. To cap off the day, I indulged in a culinary journey through St. Moritz's world-class restaurants. From traditional Swiss fondue to innovative gastronomic creations, every bite was a celebration of the region's rich culinary heritage.

The Power of Blue Zones 9 Key Lessons for a Healthier Life Written by Mari Diaz
I first stumbled upon the incredible world of Blue Zones while watching an episode of 'Down to Earth with Zac Efron.' As someone deeply passionate about holistic wellness, this particular episode, where Zac explored a Blue Zone in Sardinia, Italy, was all I could talk about for months! If you know me, you know I'm obsessed with all things holistic wellness. As a master herbalist, I follow an Ayurvedic routine most of the time, though I'm not perfect, and I have my moments of falling off the wagon. As I began to learn more about the Blue Zones and their secrets to longevity and well-being, my enthusiasm grew. The more I learned, the more I wanted to share this knowledge with anyone who would listen. So, I knew that I had to write about and share what the study concluded about the commonalities shared by all the Blue Zones. In this article, we break it all down in hopes of inspiring you to prioritize your health and well-being and spread the message of the Blue Zones. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 103
1. Work Out Less and Move More In Blue Zones, you won't find residents spending hours in gyms. Instead, they embrace active lifestyles by walking, tending to gardens, or pursuing physically demanding careers. Their secret is simple – stay active throughout the day. While we may not replicate their daily routines, we can adopt small changes like parking farther from entrances, taking stairs, or incorporating standing desks at work. 2. Find Your Purpose Knowing your sense of purpose can add years to your life. It's about waking up with a reason, whether it's happiness, family, or a cause dear to your heart. If you're unsure, explore your human design, seek inspiration from your midheaven, or ask yourself, "What would make my life the happiest and most fulfilling?" 3. Relieve Stress Stress is universal, but managing it effectively is key. Blue Zone residents have mastered stress relief through various routines – from ancestral remembrance to prayer, napping, or happy hour. We can incorporate practices like meditation, nature walks, affirmations, or simply connecting with loved ones to cope with stress.
4. Eat Consciously and Listen to Your Body Blue Zone residents follow the 80% rule – they stop eating when they feel 80% full. This mindful approach promotes regular check-ins with the body to avoid overindulgence. They also eat their smallest meal in the late afternoon or early evening, followed by fasting. To follow suit, consider making breakfast and lunch your main meals, with a lighter dinner.
5. Incorporate More Plants into Your Diet While not strict vegans, Blue Zone residents focus on vegetables and whole foods, with beans as a dietary staple. They consume meat sparingly, about five times a month, usually in small portions. Transitioning can start with Meatless Mondays or by integrating nutrient-dense vegetables and beans into your meals while listening to your body. 6. Drink a Glass of Wine Regularly – in Moderation Moderate wine consumption is common in Blue Zones, offering potential health benefits from polyphenols and antioxidants. Remember, moderation is key, and it may not suit everyone, so consult a healthcare professional.

7. Practice Spirituality Belonging to faith-based communities is a common thread in Blue Zones, providing a sense of purpose and connection. Attending faith-based services, reading spiritual texts, or joining like-minded groups can foster spirituality and enhance well-being. 8. Prioritize Family and Loved Ones Centenarians in Blue Zones prioritize their relationships. Living near aging relatives can lower disease rates among children. Committing to a life partner can extend your life expectancy. Embrace these practices by staying in touch with loved ones and cherishing moments together. 9. Cultivate a Positive Social Circle A strong, positive community is vital. Loneliness is detrimental to health, while supportive friendships contribute to well-being. Consider forming closeknit groups or spending time with people who share healthy habits and a positive outlook on life. I hope this article has inspired you as much as exploring the BlueZones has inspired me. May their wisdom guide you toward a life filled with vitality, purpose, and lasting well-being. I wish you the joy of incorporating these valuable lessons into your daily life. Here's to a future of vibrant health, meaningful connections, and a truly fulfilling existence. Wishing you a life as beautiful and remarkable as the Blue Zones themselves.
Cheers to a healthier, happier you! Mari Diaz CEO & Founder, OM & BLOOM www.ommktg.com www.justbloomco.com

3 Overlooked Root Causes of Hormone Imbalance Written by Mari Diaz
BLOOM MAGAZINE | 106
But what's causing these imbalances? That's precisely what we're here to explore. While many factors can come into play, three surprising culprits often go unnoticed.
Hormone health – a topic near and dear to many of us, yet one that often doesn't receive the attention it truly deserves. In a world filled with countless health discussions, it's time to shine a spotlight on this crucial aspect of our well-being.
1. Malnourishment: The Missing Nutrients Our journey begins with a concern that affects us all – the nutritional quality of our food. In recent decades, the quality of the soil that grows our crops has declined significantly. This means the fruits and vegetables we consume today contain only a fraction of the vitamins and minerals they once did. To make matters worse, many of us rely on packaged and processed foods, which often lack the essential nutrients needed for proper hormonal function. Registered dietitian nutritionists and hormone specialists emphasize the importance of a nutrientrich diet in tackling hormonal imbalances. Vitamins such as B, zinc, iron, and selenium are like the building blocks for our hormones. Ensuring their presence in our daily intake, whether through our diet or supplements, is vital for hormonal balance.
The Significance of Hormones Before we dive into the nitty-gritty, let's take a moment to appreciate the importance of hormones. These microscopic chemical messengers wield tremendous power over our lives. They influence our moods, energy levels, metabolism, and even our ability to conceive. In essence, hormones are the conductors of the symphony that is our body, ensuring everything works in harmony. The Hidden Side of Hormones Now, here's the catch – there's a hidden side to hormones, one that often remains obscured. We're talking about hormone imbalances, those tricky situations where our bodies don't quite hit the right notes. They manifest in various ways, from mood swings and fatigue to more serious issues like infertility and chronic conditions. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 107
2. The Hidden Threat: Endocrine Disruptors Next up, we have a silent intruder – the presence of artificial chemicals and toxins in our daily lives. Over the past few decades, these endocrine-disrupting chemicals have stealthily infiltrated our food, environment, and personal care products. They interfere with our body's ability to use hormones properly, potentially leading to imbalances. These harmful compounds can be found in fragrances, pesticides, herbicides, and various synthetic substances. To mitigate this risk, consider opting for organic food options and replacing your beauty products and household cleaners with nontoxic alternatives. By reducing your exposure to these potential disruptors, you're taking a proactive step toward safeguarding your hormonal health.
t's crucial to recognize that hormone imbalances are more common than we may realize. By acknowledging and addressing these three often-overlooked root causes – malnourishment, endocrine disruptors, and the pressures of hustle culture – we can reclaim control over our hormonal well-being. It may not be a walk in the park, but the effort is undeniably worth it. Prioritizing our health and well-being, and incorporating nature's remedies, is a transformative journey toward optimal hormonal health and overall wellness. Wishing you a journey of renewed hormonal health and overall well-being!
3. The Silent Stressor: Hustle Culture Lastly, let's talk about the elephant in the room – the rise of hustle culture. In today's society, the relentless pursuit of success and the constant pressure to work harder can throw our hormonal balance off-kilter. The stress associated with this lifestyle negatively impacts our nervous system's regulation, which, in turn, affects our hormone health. When our nervous system is in a perpetual state of anxiety and dysregulation, it disrupts the brain's signals responsible for hormone production. To combat this, it's crucial to find effective stress management techniques and incorporate moments of relaxation into our daily routines. Recognizing the role of hustle culture and the pressure we impose on ourselves can be the key to resolving hormonal imbalances.

Written by Mari Diaz Ari's life in London had been a rollercoaster of emotions and challenges. As the months passed, she found herself excelling in her dream job, but the demands of her career were taking a toll on her well-being. The long hours and high-pressure environment left her feeling drained and disconnected from what truly mattered to her. One evening, after a particularly grueling day at the office, Ari sat alone in her apartment, reflecting on her journey. She had achieved professional success, but at what cost? She missed the close-knit bond she had with her family and friends back in Miami. Lily was adjusting to her new life, but Ari knew that her daughter still longed for her old friends and the familiar warmth of their old home. Ari's decision to prioritize her family's happiness was a turning point. She knew she couldn't continue down the same path. It was time for a change, a new beginning that would allow her to find a better balance between her career and her personal life. With determination in her heart, Ari made a difficult choice. She decided to quit her highpaying job in London, even though she didn't have another job lined up. It was a leap of faith, a bold step into the unknown. But she was willing to take the risk because she knew it was the right decision for her and Lily. As she handed in her resignation, Ari felt a mix of emotions—relief, uncertainty, and a glimmer of hope. She had saved enough money and made some wise investments, which would provide financial security for at least a year. It gave her the freedom to take a break, to focus on what truly mattered, and to explore new opportunities. In the weeks that followed, Ari and Lily packed their belongings and said their goodbyes to London. They returned to the United States, to the warm embrace of their family and friends. It was a homecoming filled with tears of joy and reunions that warmed their hearts.
Ari knew that she needed time to rediscover herself and her passions. She had always dreamed of starting her own business, and now, with the support of her loved ones and the financial cushion she had built, it felt like the perfect moment to pursue that dream. As she settled back into her old life in Miami, Ari began to explore different possibilities. She attended workshops, networked with entrepreneurs, and poured her energy into creating a business plan. It was a challenging journey filled with uncertainty, but Ari was determined to build a life that aligned with her true passions and values. In the midst of it all, Ari realized that happiness wasn't just about career success. It was about finding a balance that allowed her to nurture her relationships, take care of herself, and pursue her dreams. She had learned that sometimes, the path to happiness required taking a step back and reevaluating one's priorities. As Ari embarked on her new beginning, she knew that the road ahead wouldn't be easy, but she was ready to face the challenges head-on. With Lily by her side and a renewed sense of purpose, she was determined to create a life that was not only fulfilling but also truly meaningful.
To be continued... In this next edition, will Ari find her true passion? Will this path she's chosen lead to the fulfillment she seeks? Was moving back the right decision? Was giving up her high-paying job a good choice? Come back to the next edition to find out as we follow Ari's pursuit of her dreams, exploring the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead in her quest for a more meaningful, wellbalanced life that fuels her passion.
