about the cover At Bloom magazine, we love to share the stories behind our cover shoots, and this one was truly special. We booked the breathtaking MOE studio, which had perfect lighting and added an extra layer of charm to the photos. Rosa looked stunning in her vintage blue blazer, exuding confidence and beauty. We had a blast during the shoot, trying out different poses and experimenting with fun props. In the end, we were all thrilled with the final product. The pictures turned out beautifully, and Rosa looks radiant and gorgeous in them. We hope you love them as much as we do.

Happy Birthday Bloom Magazine! Celebrating One Year Since the Big Rebranding! Written By Anailis Diaz As we celebrate the one-year anniversary of Bloom Magazine's rebranding from IN TOUCH, we sat down with Mari Diaz, the founder of Bloom, to reflect on the journey and mission of the magazine. In this interview, Mari shares the origins of IN TOUCH and how it led to the rebranding of the magazine to Bloom. She also discusses how the rebranding represents a new direction for the magazine and how Bloom has evolved over the past year. Mari also shares her hopes for the future of Bloom and what she's most proud of the magazine achieving over the past year.

Q: How has Bloom evolved over the past year? Mari: Bloom has dedicated itself to this new mission. The magazine has covered not only topics related to workers' compensation but also health, personal development, and all things that matter to people in the industry. Bloom has become a place where people can learn from industry leaders, connect with others in the community, and celebrate successes and achievements.

Q: Mari, can you tell us about the origins of IN TOUCH and how it led to the rebranding of the magazine to Bloom? Mari: Sure! IN TOUCH was founded in 2009 as a magazine and platform for workers' compensation professionals to network and connect. Two years after, we created the IN TOUCH awards and gala to celebrate excellence in the industry. Over the years, the gala and awards became a staple in the industry. With the rebranding to Bloom, we wanted to take the mission of IN TOUCH to the next level. I chose the name Bloom because it felt like everyone was coming back to life, starting to bloom, after a difficult year of pandemic and lockdowns. Bloom meant new beginnings, hope, and growth. Q: How does the rebranding of IN TOUCH to Bloom represent a new direction for the magazine? Mari: The rebranding wasn't just a change in name or appearance; it represented a new direction for the magazine. Bloom would be more than just a source of information; it would be a platform to empower people in the industry to live better lives, both personally and professionally.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 15

Q: What is Bloom's mission?

Q: Any final thoughts?

Mari: Our mission is to inspire and empower people in the industry to achieve their full potential, both professionally and personally. We want to make a difference in the lives of people in the industry by providing the tools and resources they need to succeed.

Mari: As Bloom Magazine celebrates its first year of rebranding, we're proud of the impact we've made in the industry. I'm grateful for our team's dedication and our readers' support. Here's to many more years of inspiring and empowering the industry!

Q: What are you most proud of Bloom achieving over the past year? Mari: I'm most proud of the impact that Bloom has made in the industry. We've expanded to California and Georgia, with other states soon to follow. The magazine has received an outpouring of love and support from the community, which is a testament to its impact. Q: What are your hopes for the future of Bloom? Mari: I'm excited to see what the future holds for Bloom. We're constantly looking for new ways to make a difference in the lives of people in the industry, and we're committed to providing the resources they need to succeed.

The first annual Me,

Inc Wellness Retreat At Bloom Magazine, we are thrilled with the success of our first annual Me, Inc. Wellness Retreat at Hutchinson Island, FL. Our goal was to create an experience for the people of our industry with a unique and inspiring wellness approach, and we believe we accomplished that goal through a variety of activities and vendors. The wellness vendor hall was a bustling hub of activity throughout the day, with vendors showcasing everything from natural skincare, ayurvedic products, human design readings, massages, and microgreens. Attendees had the opportunity to sample products, ask questions, and engage with vendors who share our passion for wellness. It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and curiosity that attendees had for the latest wellness trends and products. Our meditation and massage room was another popular feature of the conference. We wanted to provide attendees with a space where they could disconnect from the outside world and focus on their inner selves. Our meditation and massage experts Kerstie Blue and Eric Heath were on hand to guide attendees through different practices, from mindfulness, reiki, and an energy cleaning massage. We received great feedback from attendees who said that the meditation and massage room was a highlight of the conference.

However, the most amazing part of this retreat was our speakers. We were so fortunate to have had such an awesome group of women who spoke on a variety of topics. We started with a panel discussion on self care and preventing burnout, discovering Ayurveda with Jessica Oker, The Language of Your Soul: A Powerful and Profound Exploration with Christina Maguire, Transforming Through Self-Discovery with Valerie Horton Rakes and Meet Your Inner Knowing with Kerstie Blue. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 17

We ended the retreat with yoga on the beach with Kerstie. The beach provided the perfect backdrop for attendees to connect with nature and practice yoga. It was amazing to see how energized and refreshed attendees felt at the end of our retreat. As the Bloom team, we are proud of what we accomplished with our first annual Me, Inc Retreat! We believe that we provided attendees with a unique and inspiring wellness experience that they will remember for years to come. The feedback we received from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, and it was inspiring to see how much they enjoyed the retreat. Looking ahead, we are already planning next year's retreat and are excited to build on the success of this year's event. JOIN US FOR THE SECOND ME, INC RETREAT ON

The Start of a Legacy

Written by Anailis Diaz

Once an afterthought, workplace wellness and employee wellbeing have shot to the top of organizational priority lists.

Studies have shown employee wellness had a hand in reduced levels of burnout, better social wellbeing, higher levels of belonging, and an increased feeling of thriving. To take care of her employees, Royo has launched many programs during her time with MDCPS. She wanted to make a difference. As the director for one of the largest school boards in the United States, Rosa has made her programs fun and unique. Rosa focused on changing the Workers’ Compensation industry.

In the wake of COVID-19, The Great Resignation, Quiet Quitting, and the various other factors contributing to high employee stress levels and disengagement for employees, companies are finding that wellness programs have far-reaching benefits. Meet Rosa Royo, a true superior within the Workers’ Compensation Industry and a leader in setting the standard of what a wellness program should look like. The Director of Workers Compensation for Miami Dade County Public Schools, currently manages a $30 million program and has reduced lost time days from an average of 77,000 to approximately 25,000 lost time days per year. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 19

Deciding to focus on Workers’ Compensation was a decision that I wanted to be able to change this industry. I wanted to have an impact. I did not view this industry as a ‘nice’ industry. The moment someone has an accident, I realized you can go from employee of the week, to a week later not getting the necessary treatment. I believe that when someone gets hurt, and it's a compensable accident, then we owe them the highest value of care that I can provide. I need to take care of them so they can come back to work.”

“I was trying to provide health and wellness information to our workers, particularly in areas where we had concentrations of accidents. So I thought, if we got this information to people, that they would make changes in their lives and that would allow us to prevent accidents and/or shorten the duration of an accident that did occur,” says Royo.

In 2007, she launched a program called, The Rebuilding Me Program. The Rebuilding Me team has engaged the Transportation employees in fitness classes, nutritional education, and ergonomic awareness activities. Since its inception, Workers’ Compensation claims for Transportation employees have been reduced by 61%, resulting in a savings of approximately $2.7 million dollars.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 20

She began her programs doing one-on-ones. “We started talking about their health and getting them on track. We have people that have 2-5 jobs and raising their grandkids, these programs gave them an opportunity to take care of themselves.” In 2016, she relaunched her program. She began providing trainers to School Board personnel. Whether they were Zumba or Bootcamp classes, her team would send out the athletic trainers to the work sites to work with employees. She wanted to get the people moving resulting in a better and healthier lifestyle. As of today, the program continues to change. “The program evolves. We’ve had to adapted because of COVID and Post-COVID. One of the things that I am most thrilled about is our Adult Swim Program,” says Royo.

The Rosa Royo Legacy Award is a testament to Rosa's unwavering commitment to employee wellness. Her hard work, vision, and dedication have made a lasting impact on the industry and on the lives of those she has helped. As Bloom congratulates Rosa on this incredible achievement, our team expresses our deep gratitude for her exceptional leadership and commitment to employee wellness. Here at Bloom, our team looks forward to awarding the Rosa Royo Legacy Award to other risk managers who share her vision and dedication to excellence. Let us raise a glass or your favorite tumbler to Rosa Royo, an outstanding leader, and a true legend in the world of employee wellness!

Rosa has always had a passion for serving, making her the outstanding leader she is today. “I have a passion for service. I have a passion for helping people and that is one of the things that guides me personally. This is an opportunity to help people get through something that has happen to them.” She has spent many years tirelessly working to improve the health and wellbeing of her colleagues. Her passion and dedication to this cause have earned her widespread admiration and respect. For this reason, Bloom recognized Royo in March of 2023. The commitment to these programs led to the creation of the prestigious Rosa Royo Legacy Award. When asked about the award, Rosa says, “I was really surprised and very honored. This is something that I am very proud of. So many people have helped make this idea become a reality. I am grateful. I am thrilled and humbled.” BLOOM MAGAZINE | 21

People to Know This section focuses on the heart of the workers' compensation industry - its people! We will take the time to get to know these individuals on a personal level and explore their roles and significant contributions to the industry. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 22

When asked about the skills required for her job, Tanya says maintaining records is the most important as it's impossible to remember everything. She also emphasizes the importance of follow-up and not taking it personally when a claimant becomes irate because their claim has been denied. Tanya has learned the importance of good team members and establishing an amazing network in her career.

Tanya Bouloy Risk Management Analyst at City of Hollywood, Florida & Currently serving on the board of PRIMA South Florida Meet Tanya Bouloy, a Risk Management Analyst for the City of Hollywood, Florida, who has been with the city for 24 years and has worked in Human Resources/Risk Management for 10 years. As a Risk Management Analyst, Tanya is responsible for the administration of the city’s claims program, which includes managing workers' compensation, general and auto liability claims, and filing claims for damages against parties who cause damage to city property. Tanya also serves on the board of PRIMA South Florida, where she works with other members to organize and host the annual PRIMA State Conference. Tanya's favorite part of the job is working with internal and external individuals who are part of the claims team. She values her co-workers in HR/Risk, the third-party administrator (TPA), the defense council, her fellow PRIMA board members, and those in the South Florida risk management community who are a constant resource for her. Tanya had never heard of the field of risk management before she started working in it, but now she loves it.

Tanya's typical workweek involves checking for new claims and addressing them, general and auto liability roundtable, Risk Management staff meeting, PRIMA board meeting, attending CEUs or other forms of training, facilitating information gathering between adjusters and departments, reviewing medical records, and responding to Requests to Produce from defense council. When asked about the major issues/trends in the field today, Tanya mentions minor injuries that manage to evolve into something serious and end up on the books for years, and claimants who think they know their rights but have no understanding of the applicable legislation. Apart from her career, Tanya is a certified Open Water SCUBA diver, and during COVID, she learned to crochet via YouTube. She has a lifelong passion for photography and enjoys assembling Lego sets. Tanya takes time in the morning to say out loud things that she is grateful for and gets kisses from her sweet pup. Tanya's biggest strength is maintaining her records and her dependability. When she first meets someone, Tanya tends to look at their shoes, unless they are accompanied by a dog, then the dog gets all her attention. Tanya's most significant learning experience was learning to love herself just the way she is and setting boundaries, which is okay even with family. Tanya tries to find a balance between her work life and home life by not checking her email often on nights or weekends. Recently, she has instituted quiet time to meditate. If she were stuck on a deserted island, Tanya would take her dachshund Gabriel, a knife, and waterproof matches. Looking ahead, Tanya believes that the technology available to us will continue to evolve, and the markets will develop new kinds of coverage in the next five years.

While Cheryl had never considered working in the safety field, she is glad she found her way. She believes that listening, treating others how you would like to be treated, and being compassionate are the most important skills for her job. Cheryl has learned that many things in her field are subject to interpretation, and it’s important to navigate those areas with care. Cheryl is proud of one accomplishment in her career: taking and passing the Workers’ Compensation Board Certification Program offered through the WCCP Association. She believes that Workers’ Compensation is a fascinating program and is always looking to expand her knowledge in her field.

Cheryl Pfeil Corporate Safety at Southeast Milk

Cheryl Pfeil has been working in the field of corporate safety for the past three years, ensuring that employees work in a safe environment and follow safe work practices. As the Corporate Safety Manager, she helps employees receive appropriate training and assists with injury claims, auto accidents, and other insurance type claims. Cheryl has been with her current employer for 17 years and has an extensive background in accounting and corporate collections, which eventually led to her position in risk management. Cheryl enjoys helping people and finds every day presents new challenges to work through. Her workweek is never the same day twice, and she’s constantly working on various issues, from employee injuries to training requirements. Her favorite part of the job is assisting people in any way she can.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 24

Cheryl enjoys gardening, and her plants are her passion. She also went spelunking in a local underground cave in Florida several years ago, which was a thrilling and scary experience. Cheryl finds inspiration in life through searching, just like many people. Cheryl’s biggest strength is treating all people with respect. When she meets someone for the first time, she notices their eyes and if they remain engaged during their conversation. Cheryl’s most significant learning experience was to better understand commercial drivers’ responsibilities through Smith System Training. Cheryl finds balancing her work and home life difficult, as she is on call 24/7. But she starts each day by telling herself that today will be good. Cheryl would bring sunscreen, music, and a good book to devour if she were stuck on a deserted island. In the next five years, Cheryl hopes that the Workers’ Comp industry will become more flexible in treatment providers and that caring, competent providers who realize they are dealing with a person's life and future will be available.

In a typical week, Samantha imports payment files, creates reports for management, deals with system issues, and works on special projects for the system. She is responsible for monthly and quarterly reporting to all clients, Relation management, and other outside entities and for any special requested reporting as well. The field has changed with technology and the cyber security issues that exist. The major issues and trends in the field today are evolving analytical tools and an increase in reporting and data requests.

Samantha Higgins Data Analyst at Relation Insurance Services Meet Samantha Higgins, a Data Analyst at Relation Insurance Services, where she is responsible for managing the claims program and creating reports for internal staff, the management team, and clients. With 15 years of experience in data analysis and 10 years at Relation Insurance, Samantha is an expert in managing and analyzing data to assist clients and Relation management in managing their program. She is currently working on a project to connect the claims program and document management system to save staff time. Samantha's passion for taking large amounts of data and transforming it into a usable format for colleagues and clients is her favorite part of the job. She did not always know that her passion was in data analysis until she became a Training Analyst. Commitment to data integrity and asking the right clarify questions are the most important skills for her job. Samantha has learned that a team made up of people with various skillsets is crucial for success.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 25

Outside of work, Samantha grew up on a farm with horses, chickens, goats, dogs, and cats. She is proud of raising two great children and completing her Process Improvement Certification with Six Sigma. The most adventurous thing Samantha has done in her life is relocating from small-town Ohio to Florida as a young adult on her own. She is inspired by those who strive to continually improve themselves and their work product. Samantha's hobbies include growing flowers and vegetables, exercising, and trying new coffee shops. Samantha starts her day with iced protein coffee and her favorite radio show. If she were not too scared, she would love to try skydiving. Her biggest strength in the workplace is her commitment to accuracy. Samantha notices friendliness when she first meets someone. The most significant learning experience she has had is that a team is made up of varied persons and each one has something to offer. To balance her work life and home life, Samantha practices yoga. She is happiest exploring new areas with her kids. If Samantha were stuck on a deserted island and could only take three things, she would bring a solar charging cell phone or tablet, sunscreen, and a machete. In five years, she expects Cyber Security issues and protocols to continue to increase as the value of data remains a key commodity. She also anticipates more automation to streamline and standardize processes.

Over the years, Swonger has noticed many changes in the industry, including the introduction of technology and finding people who think of workers' compensation as a career and not just a paycheck. Swonger’s proudest career accomplishment is being promoted to claims manager, but she is also proud of her children, who are both amazing young adults. Swonger has done some adventurous things in her life, including holding a shark in Mexico. Currently, her children inspire her in life.

Elizabeth Swonger Workers' Compensation Claims Manager at CCMSI Elizabeth Swonger, a CCMSI Workers’ Compensation Claim Manager, has been managing a team of workers’ compensation supervisors, adjusters, and claim associates since January 2023. Her current projects involve motivating her team to be the best they can be. Swonger’s favorite part of her job is mentoring people and watching them grow. While she didn’t plan on working in this field, she fell in love with it and has been in it ever since. Swonger believes that knowing workers' compensation laws and client relations are key skills for her job. One of the most important lessons she has learned is that there are always two sides to every story, but the truth lies somewhere in the middle. A typical week in Swonger’s job involves answering questions from not only supervisors, but adjusters and clients. It is fast-paced, but she finds that the week goes by quickly.

The best career advice Swonger has received is to never lie, especially in a deposition. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her best friend and supporting her children with their life goals. Swonger starts her day by jumping right into it once she’s up, and a cup of coffee definitely helps. While she’s always been too scared to try karaoke, Swonger describes herself as empathetic, kind, and compassionate. Her biggest strength is that she never gives up. Swonger notices if they make eye contact when meeting someone for the first time. Her most significant learning experience was stepping into her new role as claims manager. Swonger tries to find the balance between her work life and home life by logging off and not taking her work home with her. When and where she was happiest in her life growing up in a small town in Connecticut where they had horses, chickens, and geese, and occasionally the neighbor's cow would jump their fence. If Swonger were stuck on a deserted island, she would take her kids, food, and sunscreen. Swonger believes that in five years, everything in the industry will be done remotely, new laws will be in place, and the people in the industry will look different as people who have been in the industry for years retire and the new people are now experienced adjusters.

Connecting Claims Professionals to the Best Workers' Comp Doctors Written By Anailis Diaz OM Marketing was founded in 2004 by Mari and Ozzy Diaz with a mission to bridge the communication gap between physicians and claims professionals in the workers' compensation industry. Mari and Ozzy noticed a significant communication gap between adjusters, employers, nurses, and doctors, leading to a lack of understanding of paperwork on the physician's end. The couple realized they needed to take action and become the connecting bridge between physicians and claims professionals to ensure that they are connected to the best doctors. With dedication and strong ethics, OM quickly became the goto for claims professionals looking for the best doctors in workers' compensation. OM established the WorkCompReady™ certification in 2010, which provided education, training, and continuous support services to hundreds of doctors in the industry. This led to the creation of the OM Directory, a print directory that was distributed to employers, adjusters, case managers, and attorneys looking for qualified doctors to treat their injured workers. Both the WorkCompReady™ training and Directory quickly became an industry standard of excellence. In 2011, OM created the Bloom Awards, which recognizes the best-of-the-best in the workers' compensation industry and celebrates excellence through an annual awards gala. These awards have become a workers' compensation industry staple. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 29

The Organizational Cost of Human Capital: Bundled vs Unbundled Written By Dr. Claire Muselman What is popular is not always right. What is right is not always popular. I remember this banner draping across the chalkboard of Mrs. Miller’s second-grade class at Nixon Elementary when I was a child. More valid words then could not have permeated my mind and continued to echo. Good thing I went into workers’ compensation. At this point in my career, I feel it is imperative to educate on areas lacking transparency and some of those areas where organizations profit off of human suffering. By shining light into these nuances that currently exist, and I hope to provide light into improving the human capital landscape for employees everywhere. Many organizations today are faced with the same issue: organizational culture. We continue to move out of the pandemic into the new world of what has yet to come, including an increased remote workforce, greater flexibility, and a generational shift starting to take rise. As organizations take these factors into account to make their culture an attractive and sustainable sense of community, it is essential to be aware of outside factors that may inhibit this progress. One of these issues to bring to light is one which stems from claims, and more specifically, workers’ compensation claims. If you are an employer, workers’ compensation claims are inevitable regardless of industry. How these claims are handled and how partnerships are drawn stems from power in the employer’s landscape; however, many are not aware of this, nor are they educated about this front. Employers hold power and should be asking questions! The risk management aspect of claims administration looks to the “group-think” mentality of the insurance agent or brokerage firm, knowing the vital needs of the specific employer based upon the agency's niche or brokerage

Often, products and services relating to the workers’ compensation claims (and total claims landscape) process are lumped together into a “bundled” product. While this can make matters easier to manage or handle from a risk management standpoint, one poor experience with a workers’ compensation claim can change the trajectory of an organization’s culture moving forward. An Employee' experience while going through the workers’ compensation claims process is unique because it tends to stem from a vulnerable space. An unforeseen circumstance arose, and now a void needs to be filled while the body needs time to heal, rest, and rejuvenate. How the claims adjuster interacts with an injured employee can substantially impact how this employee feels towards their organization. It does not stop with the administrator of the claims. It spills over into all parties and partnerships with which this employee will interact throughout the recovery process and the claim's lifecycle. If we look at workers' compensation, how employees feel toward their employer can be impacted in many ways. The relationship builds when the first injury report is filed with the claim’s administrator. Understanding the information needed at the onset and the expression of what is yet to come to alleviate the fear of the unknown with an employee can come from the claims administrator and be reemphasized by the employer. Employers should remain active in this process because what you do not know can and will hurt you longterm. Staying active in the community extends beyond Human Resources or a workers’ compensation coordinator to the leadership levels of employees. During the beginning stages of a workers’ compensation claim, the employee interacts with various medical providers, the possibility of a pharmacy if prescriptions are prescribed, and medical billing on both aspects from physician to pharmacy. Understanding these parties are an extension of you as the employer is the first step to being aware. This experience is just the tipping point.

BLOOM MAGAZINE | 37

Another example is medical bill review. When an employee treats medically after sustaining an injury, information is needed to process the medical bill for payment. The employee may receive an invoice if the information is entered incorrectly or put as secondary insurance. Receiving an invoice for medical treatment related to the work injury concerns injured employees. If they do not communicate to you, the employer, or their claims adjuster that this has occurred, the medical provider could send the bill to collections. When an issue like this attempt to be fixed after notifying the claims administrator, if all things go well, the invoice is paid, and life is grand. There are also circumstances where this situation could be better. For example, the adjuster approves the invoice for payment. Yet, the bill review company denies the charge for an unforeseen reason. Some states require medical bill payment within 30 days of receipt under workers’ compensation; therefore, the responsiveness of the medical bill review provider is imperative.

An employee who is injured wants to receive the necessary medical treatment to secure a diagnosis and a plan to recover. In my almost two decades in the workers’ compensation claims space, I have learned that employee does not care who the claims administrator is, what medical clinic they are treating with, the pharmacy benefits manager they are requested to use, or the company who will process the medical bills because this experience is an extension of the relationship with their employer. If something falls through the cracks, the employee believes these issues fall to the employer to help fix the situation, and they are right. There is no blame shift because, at this point, the employer has selected the representation of their organization, and we want the best for our people, do we not? The employer holds power for what they will and will not tolerate for their people during this time. And that can make or break your culture, one we all want to continue to build positively. If a pharmacy transaction will not go through because the employee was not issued a first-fill card, what does the pharmacy benefit manager do about it? As an employer, I would find a way to fix the situation immediately. In 2023, there are a plethora of technology options, and one I have chosen to use in my prior claim’s life is the text-to-fill choice. If an employee is having a difficult time with their prescription medication filled at the pharmacy, does your current pharmacy benefits manager (PBM) have a solution? Some companies can text the injured worker a card for immediate fulfillment to resolve the situation. A quick key to resolving the issue should be the bare minimum we request for the well-being of our employees. How much say do you currently have with your claims administrator regarding who administers your pharmacy benefits program? Does it matter? Ask one of your injured employees about their experience filling prescriptions, and you can find out. The pharmacy benefits manager (PBM) is one example of a ‘bundled’ option in the claims administration role. Yes, it is easy to have all services and offerings bundled under one umbrella where the administrator has all these established relationships. And also…buyer beware! Do these established relationships mimic the mission, vision, values, and culture your organization reflects? They should! And if they do not, pick your relationships.

Sometimes a bill can get ‘stuck’ between the processing for payment cycle and the request for reconsideration cycle. At the same time, the injured employee continues to receive an invoice or request for payment. This relationship can cause anxiety and angst from the seat of the injured employee. Employees may feel that their medical treatment is not being paid and come to resent the employer because the payment of these services acts as an extension of the employer. Asking the right questions about the partnerships and relationships established with vendors is imperative to move an organization’s culture into a positive focus. The questioning and soliciting of responses can assist in illustrating a clear picture of employee perception of the employer. Understanding the partnerships and the ‘why’ behind specific partnerships is a need employers should be asking. Most people do not know the options or where to begin to look or ask questions. Awareness is the first step. If you are in a bundled program, why? Is it easier? Is it cost-effective? And look under the hood...is it cost-effective? How have your employees described their experience? How does it reflect on you as an employer and the perception of your organization? There are times when it is much easier to keep all claims-related matters in one space; there is the right way, and then there is the easy way. Make sure you know the difference. At least start by bringing awareness to this concept and exploring the various options' financials. If you are not in a bundled program, make sure to rethink your method to how you choose your strategic partnerships with your vendors. What does their impact look like on your employees? What data can they showcase to support what they tell you? Does anything they do make your life easier as a result? Does anything showcase the employer's stance as having done something extra, more, or valuable to your employees? What do this vendor's mission, values, and organizational culture showcase? Is it in alignment with what your organization stands for and hopes to achieve? We need more transparency to better educate our employers on one claim's impact on an organization. It starts with culture, from cultivating awareness about what matters to employees. The rest is just details.

Adjuster's Guide to Mastering Empathetic Communication Written By Mari Diaz As a claims adjuster, you play a critical role in helping injured workers navigate the workers' compensation claims process. However, it's not just about processing their claim; it's also about showing empathy and care towards the injured worker. Effective communication is essential in building trust and providing support to the injured worker during this challenging time. Here are some practical tips and strategies that you can use to communicate better with injured workers and show them that you care about their well-being beyond the claim.

Be Empathetic Injured workers are often dealing with physical pain, emotional stress, and uncertainty about their future. Showing empathy and understanding can help to ease their worries and build trust. Let them know that you understand how difficult this situation is for them and that you are there to help in any way possible. Simple gestures like asking how they are feeling or using their name can make a big difference. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 42

Be Clear and Concise: When communicating with an injured worker, it's important to be clear and concise. Avoid using technical terms and explain everything in simple terms that they can understand. Listen carefully to their concerns and answer any questions they may have. It can be helpful to repeat back what they have said to ensure that you have understood them correctly. Keep Them Informed: Keeping the injured worker informed about the status of their claim can help to reduce their anxiety and stress. Regular updates, either through phone calls or emails, can keep them in the loop and help them feel more in control of the situation. Make sure to explain any delays or changes to the process, and be honest about what they can expect in terms of timelines and outcomes. Be Available: Injured workers may have questions or concerns that arise outside of regular business hours. Being available and responsive can help to alleviate their worries and show that you care. Consider providing your contact information so that they can reach out to you if they have any urgent needs. Responding to messages or calls promptly can help to build trust and foster a positive relationship with the injured worker. Provide Resources: In addition to processing their claim, injured workers may need additional resources to help them cope with their injury. Providing information about local support groups, rehabilitation services, and other resources can be incredibly helpful and show that you care about their well-being beyond the claim. This can help to build a positive reputation for your company and demonstrate that you prioritize the needs of the injured worker. It's important to remember that the injured worker is a human being who may be dealing with pain, stress, and uncertainty. By approaching each interaction with empathy and care, you can help to alleviate their worries and show that you prioritize their well-being. By following the tips outlined in this article, you can provide a positive experience for the injured worker and ensure that their needs are met throughout the claims process.

Nickcola Wallace Director of Operations Baron Home Group My workers compensation philosophy prioritizes compassion and empathy. I recognize that employees come to work to care for themselves, loved ones, and customers, and a work injury can dramatically change their world. We are all susceptible to life-altering events, and putting myself in the injured employee's shoes helps me see the whole picture and approach each case with a human perspective.

Joyann Major Risk Management Specialist City of Miami My workers' compensation philosophy is to prioritize treating every claimant with the same level of respect and care that I would want to receive if I were in their position. This includes providing all necessary medical treatment promptly and efficiently to facilitate their return to full duty as soon as possible. I believe in maintaining a high standard of performance from the initial encounter and throughout the entire process. Therefore, once I clock out, I leave work behind until the next workday.

Tell us a bit about what you do? I am a Workers Compensation Claims Manager at PMA Companies responsible for managing unbundled and specialty accounts throughout the southeastern United States. Can you tell us about one accomplishment you are most proud of with your career or family? One thing I am most proud is actually giving back to the community. I have coached youth sports in my spare time throughout the Central Florida area and it is very rewarding to see some of the kids that I have coached, not only make it to the professional level but also become productive young men within the community. What’s one thing that everyone should know about you that they might not already know? I would say hands down that I am afraid of spiders and snakes! What does a typical week in your work look like? A typical week is not always so typical as I am sure everyone can relate in this industry. :-). My weeks may vary with potentially traveling to home office for meetings to reaching out to clients and managing a very talented workforce. What kind of projects are you working on right now? I am currently working on strengthening relationships with clients and outside of work assisted with developing curriculum for Stetson University. What's your favorite part of the job? I would say dealing with people of all factors of life and building relationships. There's never a boring day on the job as it may vary from day to day. Did you always want to work in this field? If you ask me what I wanted to be growing up, I may not have said work in the insurance field, however after coming out of college, I knew this field was for me. I enjoy what I do and approach everyday trying to be better than I was the day before. What has changed the most about the field since you started? There has been a lot of changes since I have started in the field. I think one thing that stands out is the need to learn multiple jurisdictions makes you more marketable and provides you with better opportunities. When I started in the field, you were expected to be an expert in one jurisdiction, but now it helps to learn multiple jurisdictions to allow the ability to progress.

Ed Gallon

Claims Manager, PMA Management Corp What are three words that describe you? Nice, Caring and Fair. What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve done in your life? What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to try but you’ve been too scared to do? Parasailing. That appears to be fun but also may be out of my league. Who knows I may get enough courage to try it! How do you find balance with your work life and your home life? I have learned over the years that you sometimes have to turn it off. I have learned that you work hard but when there is family time, you must take the time and not burn yourself out. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 49

What has changed the most about the field since you started? I graduated nursing school in 2000, so a LOT of things have changed in the nursing field since then. I’ve only been in workers comp for about 5 years so not much has changed there. One of the biggest changes that I am so grateful for, is being able to work remotely.

How do you find balance with your work life and your home life? In order to balance work and personal life, I have been making a conscious effort to work less, and on weekends, I try to avoid using my computer and instead spend quality time with my boyfriend, whether it is binging Netflix all day or convincing him to come with me to Universal Studios.

Meet Antonio Primo, Founder of Compequip Solutions Q: Antonio, can you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to start Compequip Solutions? Antonio: I started working for a healthcare physician group as an 18-year-old and advanced to upper management in my 7 years there. During my time there, I became familiar with the worker's compensation industry and recognized that the majority of DME companies focused only on Medicare/Commercial insurance claims, leaving the Worker's Compensation sector underserved. This inspired me to start my own DME company that would fill the gap and provide specialized care to injured workers. That's how Compequip Solutions was born. Q: Can you describe the mission and vision of Compequip Solutions? Antonio: Our vision is to be an extension of the adjusters and case managers, taking a proactive approach to managing the medical equipment aspect of the claim from start to finish as compassionate stewards of the interests of our case managers, adjusters, and injured workers. Our mission is to provide highly personalized care, unmatched customer service, and competitive pricing. We want to make sure that our injured workers receive the care and support they need to recover from their injuries and return to their normal lives. Q: What sets Compequip Solutions apart from its competitors?

Antonio Primo Founder & CEO, Compequip

When it comes to the medical equipment industry, few companies can match the personalized care and unmatched customer service of Compequip Solutions LLC. Founded by Antonio Primo, Compequip Solutions is a leading provider of durable medical equipment throughout the entire state of Florida, offering personalized care and unmatched customer service to those in need. However, the company's mission goes far beyond just providing medical equipment. Compequip Solutions is dedicated to serving injured workers in the Worker's Compensation sector with compassion and support during a challenging time in their lives. In this interview, we sit down with Antonio to learn more about his journey in creating Compequip Solutions and how the company continues to prioritize the needs of injured workers.

Antonio: Our focus on Worker's Compensation claims is what sets us apart from our competitors. We recognize the specialized needs of every aspect of the process, and we stock a wide range of DME equipment and devices that enable us to service our WC claimants and deliver their item most often, same day by a licensed technician. Our personnel have been with the company for 10+ years, and they carry years of experience, continuing education, and training. Q: How does Compequip Solutions address the challenges faced by its clients? Antonio: Compequip Solutions' specialized expertise in Worker's Compensation claims enables us to provide highly personalized care and unmatched customer service to our clients. We understand that our injured workers have experienced some type of injury/trauma that is often lifechanging, and we compassionately assist with their recovery or transition to their new normal. We develop a long-term relationship with each injured worker, come to know them, and understand their conditions and needs. Our injured workers don't usually involve one and done equipment deliveries. The nature of Worker's Compensation claims is generally long-term, so we work closely with our clients to ensure that their needs are met throughout the entire process. Q: How can readers connect with Compequip Solutions? Antonio: Readers can connect with Compequip Solutions by calling (888) 590-0002 or by emailing us at aprimo@compequip.net or referrals@compequip.net. We're always here to help with any questions or concerns our clients may have.

Spring

An Ode to

written by samantha diaz As the earth awakens from its slumber and the first flowers begin to bloom, we are reminded of the magic of Spring. The Spring Equinox is a time of awakening and rebirth, where the darkness of winter fades and the warmth of the light takes over. With the arrival of Spring, our spirits are renewed with fresh ideas and dreams for our lives. The energy of this season is invigorating, making us feel alive and inspired to embrace a new beginning. As the days grow longer and the sun grows warmer, we are fueled by the growth energy of Spring. Though implementing changes can sometimes disrupt our sense of balance, the Spring Equinox reminds us that everything in life seeks equilibrium. Day and night are equal, light and dark coexist, bringing much-needed balance into our lives. Spring is a time of joy and renewal, as nature awakens and is reborn. In the same way, our own spirits come alive with hopeful, excited energy. We are called to focus on what we want to see grow in our lives and gain clarity on what we want to harvest. This is the season of illumination, where we must determine which of our winter dreams we want to focus on. The growth energy of Spring and Summer is powerful, but it can also be overwhelming. To avoid being pulled in too many different directions, we must get clear on our goals and try out what's calling us. This is a time for fresh starts and new beginnings, where we can embrace the energy of Spring and let it guide us towards growth and rebirth.

You want things to be better for not just other people, but also for yourself in the process. I see you. I was you. I am you. What you are feeling is okay. There is nothing selfish about anything that you desire. You are allowed to want better for yourself. You are allowed to be filled to the brim, totally fulfilled. You are allowed to show up with the most energy and be super stoked about your life. In fact, listening to and respecting these yearnings is the most self-less thing you can do. Mentioned previously, we were all taught that giving to others is the “right” thing to do. Which, it is – but first, you must position yourself to be abundantly in good health and overflowing. You must be sustainable in your own right before turning outward. How many injured workers push off getting help until they are in chronic pain that is nearly irreparable? At that point, the family loses a major source of income and the worker bears the emotional burden of no longer being able to provide for the family. If that person had reported the injury when it happened, recovery could have been much quicker, cheaper, and less painful, resulting in less downtime of not being able to provide. The same general metaphor also applies to your life satisfaction. When you’re allowing yourself to suffer on a recurring basis for the good of others, there will be a point where you are no longer willing to suffer. How long will your recovery take? Before you hit your breaking point, you need to equip yourself with the proper assistance. You need to be able to harness your own energy, your own inspiration, your own drive, and actually make things happen for the change you crave. But how do you do this when you likely don’t know how to move to the next step? You may not have any sense of direction of where to go – an arrow goes nowhere without a target. Believe it or not, the bullseye you seek was predetermined by your soul, and the map to it was created before you were born. For the last 30 years, Human Design has been helping people across the globe uncover this blueprint. Human Design is a spiritual science that contains the guide to your most fulfilling life. It highlights not just your personality traits, but also your subconscious habits and the purpose they serve, your purpose in life, your energy type, and the unique communication style of your intuition.

People who have learned to work with their design have experienced miracles in their personal lives, work lives, and relationships. Women and men alike have been able to find the strength to face their deepest desires and act on them. Using this tool, I have helped people connect to their true purpose, choose the most aligned next step in their career, accept and love themselves like never before, and even dissolve conflict in one fell swoop. Learning your own aspects of your design will provide you the clarity you’re seeking, no doubt. It's time to jump in the driver’s seat of your own life and fully own it. It’s time for you to work with your unique design, too. You are allowed to want better for yourself – even when you don’t know exactly what that looks like. To start your journey of working with this blueprint, I offer introductory Human Design readings that assist in acquainting you with your soul. We take a look at your energy type and intuition style and use this to decode your purpose in life. This provides direction and a roadmap for you to aim your arrow closer to the bullseye, providing certainty and satisfaction through a path that is specifically designed for you. So, tell me, are you ready to make your dream a reality?

How does the RAS affect our thoughts? The RAS is constantly monitoring our environment and filtering out information that is not important. When we have a thought, the RAS will filter out any information that contradicts that thought and focus on information that supports it. For example, if you're thinking "I'm not good enough," your RAS will filter out any evidence that contradicts that thought and focus on evidence that supports it. This can lead to a cycle of negative thinking that can be hard to break. How can we use the RAS to stop negative self-talk? To use the RAS to stop negative self-talk, we need to train our brain to focus on positive thoughts instead. Here's how to do it:

how to stop

negative self talk Written by Melly Diaz Negative self-talk is something that many of us struggle with. It's easy to get caught up in a cycle of negative thoughts that can lead to feelings of low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. I made it a priority of mine to really focus on noticing when I start to have these thoughts and learn to stop this mindset. During my journey I learned there is a way to break this cycle and train your brain to focus on positive thoughts instead. This technique involves using your reticular activating system (RAS) to filter out negative thoughts and focus on positive ones. I know this sounds very advance but believe me it's very simple! What is the Reticular Activating System (RAS)? The RAS is a network of neurons in the brainstem that plays an important role in regulating arousal and attention. It acts as a filter, allowing certain information to pass through to the brain while blocking out other information. The RAS is responsible for filtering out irrelevant information and prioritizing important information. It also plays a key role in regulating our sleep-wake cycle.

1.Identify your negative self-talk: The first step is to become aware of your negative self-talk. Take some time to reflect on your thoughts and identify any patterns of negative self-talk. 2.Challenge your negative self-talk: Once you've identified your negative self-talk, challenge it. Ask yourself if it's really true or if there's evidence that contradicts it. 3.Reframe your negative self-talk: Once you've challenged your negative self-talk, reframe it in a positive way. For example, if you're thinking "I'm not good enough," reframe it as "I am capable and worthy of success." 4.Repeat positive affirmations: To reinforce positive thinking, repeat positive affirmations to yourself. These could be simple phrases like "I am capable" or "I am worthy of love and respect." 5.Visualize positive outcomes: Visualizing positive outcomes can help to reinforce positive thinking. Take some time each day to visualize yourself achieving your goals and experiencing positive outcomes. By using these techniques, you can train your brain to focus on positive thoughts instead of negative self-talk. Over time, this can lead to increased self-esteem, reduced anxiety, and improved overall well-being. I know that negative self-talk can be a challenging cycle to break. However, when I learned about using your reticular activating system to filter out negative thoughts and focus on positive ones, I've made a conscious effort to train my brain to think more positively. With practice, you can develop a more positive mindset and improve your overall well-being.

the wonderful world of birth flowers Written by Samantha Diaz Welcome to the wonderful world of birth flowers! Did you know that each month of the year is associated with a specific flower? Yes, you heard that right! From January to December, there is a unique flower that represents the people born in that particular month. Birth flowers are not just ordinary flowers; they hold a special significance and meaning that can be traced back to ancient times. In Acient Rome, flowers were often used to convey messages that could not be spoken aloud. This practice, known as the "language of flowers," became very popular during the 19th century. Birth flowers were also an important part of this language, with each flower symbolizing different traits and characteristics of the person born in that month. For instance, the birth flower for January is the carnation, which symbolizes hope and new beginnings. On the other hand, the birth flower for December is the narcissus, which represents sweetness and self-esteem. Each birth flower has a unique story and meaning behind it, making it a perfect way to personalize a gift or celebrate a loved one's birthday. So whether you're a January baby who loves the delicate snowdrops or a December-born individual who resonates with the confidence of the narcissus, there's a birth flower for everyone. Beauty from Within: The Power of AntiAging Foods for Healthy Aging Aging gracefully is a beautiful thing, but that doesn't mean we have to sit back and let the signs of aging take over. By taking a proactive approach to healthy aging, we can embrace the aging process and feel confident and beautiful at any age. One of the most effective ways to promote healthy aging is by nourishing our bodies with anti-aging foods that enhance our natural beauty from the inside out.

Drinking plenty of water is the first step in promoting healthy, youthful-looking skin. Dehydration can leave your skin looking dull and make wrinkles and fine lines more pronounced. By consistently drinking enough water, you can plump up your skin and give it a healthy glow that radiates from within. Healthy fats, like those found in avocado, nuts, and fatty fish, are crucial for maintaining youthful skin and providing us with the energy we need to tackle our busy lives. These essential fatty acids moisturize the skin from the inside out, leading to a more plump and radiant appearance. They also protect the protective fatty membrane around skin cells and lubricate the skin, making it smoother and more supple. In addition to healthy fats, vitamin C-rich foods can also work wonders for our skin. Vitamin C is a cofactor for the production of collagen, which maintains the elasticity and firmness of our skin. Foods high in vitamin C include citrus fruits, bell peppers, and leafy greens, making it easy to incorporate this essential nutrient into your daily diet. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 78

Antioxidant-rich foods can help protect our skin from free radical damage, which can cause wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and other signs of aging. Foods high in antioxidants include berries, leafy greens, and dark chocolate. Not only are these foods delicious, but they're also packed with the nutrients your body needs to look and feel its best. By incorporating these anti-aging foods into our diets, we're taking a proactive approach to healthy aging. We're nourishing our bodies from within and promoting healthy skin that looks and feels more youthful. But anti-aging foods are just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to healthy aging. We also need to make conscious choices about the products we use on our skin and the lifestyle habits we adopt. Reducing our exposure to toxins found in mainstream beauty products can decrease our body's toxic load and help promote healthy aging. Incorporating exercise into our routines can also help us feel and look more youthful. So, let's embrace healthy aging and feel confident and beautiful at any age. With the power of antiaging foods and a positive mindset, we can nourish our bodies, enhance our natural beauty, and age gracefully.

Love at First Sight: My

Journey to Ayurveda

Have you ever felt like you've hit a roadblock on your health and wellness journey? Like you've tried everything and nothing seems to be working? That's exactly where I found myself before discovering Ayurveda. I vividly recall the moment when I first came across the term "Ayurveda." It was as if a switch had flipped inside me, and I had a deep sense that everything was about to change. I was in the depths of my health journey, navigating the overwhelming confusion of the health and wellness industry. I was constantly bouncing between visits to Western medical experts, hospitals, and waiting rooms. But as soon as I started learning about Ayurveda, my appreciation for it began to grow. Ayurveda is the world's oldest medical system, with roots dating back over 5,000 years. It takes a holistic and integrated approach to healing the body, mind, and spirit. According to Ayurveda, our bodies and minds are made up of specific elements, and by balancing these elements through food and lifestyle choices, we can live our happiest, most fulfilled lives. But Ayurveda is more than just a medical system; it's a way of life. It's about developing your inner compass, listening to your body's signals, and learning how to use food, herbal supplements, and lifestyle choices to restore balance. And let me tell you, it's not an easy road. My healing path has taken me down many wild terrains, but the more I learned, practiced, and reaped the healing benefits of Ayurveda, the more I fell in love with. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 80

What I love most about Ayurveda is its simplicity and power. It's not a fad or quick fix, but rather a sustainable way of life to last an entire lifetime. And it all starts with listening to your body. The first step to creating a sustained state of balance is to pay attention to how you feel. Do you feel better the next morning after eating a light dinner or when you eat a big meal before bed? Do you feel happier the next day when you stay up late or when you go to bed earlier? That's what finding balance is about - becoming more aware of what foods and lifestyle choices are nourishing for YOU. Ayurveda teaches us that food is medicine. To understand this concept, we have to grasp the fundamental principle of Ayurveda: The five elements - Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth exist in all matters of life. They manifest in the human body as the three Doshas - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Every person, flower, and animal is, therefore, an expression of an individual Dosha. Likewise, every food also has special properties. Through eating specific foods, a person's Doshas can increase or decrease, which can have either a positive or a negative impact. But Ayurveda isn't just about what we eat; it's also about how we eat. Eating warm meals can aid in digestion and stimulate our digestive fire. We should have meals tailored to our specific Dosha and ensure our meals are freshly prepared with high-quality whole foods. And let's not forget to savor our meals with all of our senses and take time for them. Being mindful of our body signals and going with our own "gut feelings" can help us find the ideal balance for our unique body and mind. I know firsthand that it takes time, patience, and dedication to heal with the laws of nature. But to witness your self unfold and transform in ways you never thought were possible is incredibly empowering, thanks to Ayurveda and the power of mother nature. BLOOM MAGAZINE | 81

Exploration, discovery, and growth. There is no one end goal destination, but an infinite path of learning, transforming, and rising in. Remember, Ayurveda is a journey, not a destination. It's about cultivating a lifestyle that nourishes and supports your unique mind-body constitution. Don't be afraid to experiment and try new things, and always approach your Ayurvedic practice with an open mind and a willingness to learn. As you continue on your Ayurvedic journey, be patient with yourself and trust the process. Healing takes time, but with consistent effort and dedication, you can achieve a state of balance and harmony that will benefit you for a lifetime. So take that first step today and embrace the wisdom of Ayurveda. Your body, mind, and spirit will thank you. Namaste.
