Director’s Note

Two Socks, Judith Hutcheson, Oil. Featured in the 2023 New Frontiers Art Show & Sale

Dear Friends, As we close out the year 2023, I expect that many of us are looking back and assessing all that has transpired. At the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Old West Museum, we had some major destinations we wanted to reach, and the road has had many twists and turns that we couldn’t see coming. Along the way, the Museum has changed from what it was a year ago. Our biggest goal was to reach the completion of the first phase of our expansion. You may recall that we entered the year with a large hole in our roof and plastic sheeting and plywood as our barriers against the cold. As time progressed, the Museum transformed itself with a new entrance and a new look. Our perspectives about the Museum changed as a result and the galleries of the Museum will have to be reoriented with it. In my mind, the Museum has much improved, though it is still somewhat disorienting after so many years of going in through the Vandewark Wing’s doorways. I must admit that it was amusing to watch as visitors kept trying to go in through the old doors as they had to stop, take stock of the situation and then figure out the new path. While our guests sometimes struggle with this development, it must be admitted that even the staff has had to take time to adjust to our new layout. It will take time, and gradually we will all adapt. The change of our entrance could be construed as a metaphor for what has happened in other aspects of our 2023 experience. For the first time, the Museum has had to contemplate its future without the guiding hand of two of our oldest friends. Louise Cole and Marietta Dinneen were both involved with the Museum from its conception and we owe a great deal to their kind generosity and forward-thinking leadership. Our institution would not be what it is today without their contributions and they will be greatly missed. Other friends and staff have departed from the scene this year for a variety of reasons, yet all have left their mark on this place for the better. While we contemplate these changes, it is comforting that we have so many friends that support the Museum and its mission. In the matter of friendships, the Museum’s relationship with Cheyenne Frontier Days™ grows ever friendlier with possibilities emerging that are frankly astounding. The boards of both organizations are actively talking about the future, the details of which are gradually becoming clearer. Details about these discussions will steadily become known and I hope that you, like myself, are looking at the tidings of these discussions with the same enthusiasm as when looking at presents under the Christmas Tree: we have an idea of what each contains, but we will not know with certainty until they are opened. Whatever the future holds, it is looking very bright. As we are poised to find out together, I am eager to have you along in 2024. Happy Holidays!

A “Legend-Dairy” End of Summer Education Corner

By: Jean Krause Western Art Camp in August was a blast! This wonderful camp had the kids diving into various different styles of fine art, creating their own masterpieces inspired by these styles and infused with a Western twist. Some artists that served as inspiration included Keith Haring, Luke Anderson (a CFD Western Art Show alumnus), Dale Chihuly, and Delores Purdy. In early September, our members had the opportunity to tour Burnett Land & Livestock near Carpenter. It is a fascinating, enormous operation! Just a fun fact: their dairy produces the milk for the cheese used by Domino’s and Pizza Hut! If you haven’t accompanied us on a Historic Ranch Tour yet, keep an eye out for the opportunity next summer! Sarah Konrad was our guest artist for the September Art Uncork’d at the Museum, we got hands-on and learned how to make lino-cut prints. Each attendee took home note cards made with their print masterpieces. These evenings are a perfect opportunity to explore different art styles and try something new with no previous experience required. Join us!

Events

By: Jean Krause and Amanda Marshall October is always a whirlwind month for the Programming Committee and this year was no exception! We kicked the month off with our second Thankful Thursday event. Our hard work realized $14,117 to go toward keeping the Museum up and running! Thanks to the generous contributions, attendance, and spirited bidding before and during the event. We could not have done it without all of you! Our Costume Bingo Night was a spooky delight, with a trio of witches, a hunting group with their prey, Ken and Barbie, and a whole host of other eerie characters. Games, prizes, and fun were the theme of the evening! Wild West Trunk or Treat was a smash hit yet again with well over 2,000 people in attendance. We teamed up with our friends from the Associated General Contractors again this year who provided several pieces of heavy equipment and tons of candy! Due to the weather, the Trunk or Treat moved inside the carriage hall where we had candy and books for the kids and puppies for adoption from Yola’s Pet Rescue, all while kiddos climbed on the heavy equipment and parents enjoyed the fire pits outside. All in all, a wonderful community event! As we wrap up 2023, we hope you stay tuned for 2024 and all the great events the Programming Committee will be hosting for next year!

Exhibits

Exhibits End of Year Wrap-up Coming to the Museum this winter: additions to the “Bridging Cultures” Native American exhibit and a new display of the Museum Purchase special exhibit. The replacement 8x4x8’ glass rectangular exhibit case has been built. Thank you to our generous donors Drs. Fred & Keren Emerich, Sue Miller, Teema Tuck McIntosh, and the Wyoming Humanities Council for helping acquire this showcase. We are currently putting the finishing touches on the electrical and doing some cleaning. The next stage will be adding some Native American pieces into the case for display. I am hoping to get permission from Wyoming Game and Fish that allows us to display some of the Native American belongings that have golden eagle feathers on them. Fingers crossed! After the takedown of the New Frontiers Art Show on December 4th, we are putting up the Museum Purchase exhibit. This exhibit highlights the art pieces purchased for the Museum over the years. This year, we will have a much larger assortment displayed – starting with some pieces that haven’t been out in a long, long time. Please

By: Brad Jorgensen make sure you stop by the Museum to see these pieces as they were bought almost exclusively by members of the surrounding community. Finally, I am also working on a few exhibits that I will plan to have up by CFD next year. One of them will help support CFD’s theme of “Year of the Cowgirl.” Additionally, I am still hard at work on the Kensinger kiosk exhibit and an updated HOF exhibit. Both exhibits are also going to be featured on our revamped and reimagined website. I have finally been able to secure some funding to help with the website design, which makes me extremely excited! The website and these exhibits are going to look spectacular. In closing, I wanted to give a heart-filled thank you to all the volunteers that have helped me out in exhibits and with our art shows this year. This was my second year at the Museum and I could not have done it without you. The volunteers that helped me out my first year all continue to support me, as well as a few new faces, all of which I am extremely thankful for! Happy Holidays and have a Merry Christmas. - Brad

The Final

Frontier By: Amanda Marshall

Our second annual New Frontiers Juried Art Show opened on November 3. There were over 180 total pieces on display for this show that have a more contemporary theme. We had many of our artists in attendance at the Opening Reception and had a nice crowd, considering how many events were going on that same day. (Congratulations Pokes!) Our jurors came in earlier on November 3 and picked 4 different winners for the show. Awards: The Arrival: 1890 Airborne by Steve Knox - Best of Show Twilight Elk by Natasha Romero - 2nd Place Wandering Hope Under a Turquoise Sky by Suz Matthews - 3rd Place Best Holiday Decoration: Inner Peace by Doug Schneiter We appreciate everyone coming in to see the new artwork and support new and returning artists to the Museum.

A Special Thanks to Our Grant Partners Milestones of Impact with Joint Endeavors

This year, we have joined with grant partners to enhance the programming and gallery experiences through generous grant opportunities. The following highlights some of the achievements we have accomplished through the generosity of grants and Donors to further the Museum’s mission: To cultivate a rich educational space for the diverse, international community served by and rooted in the American Western legacy of Cheyenne Frontier Days™.

Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund Grant, Fred & Keren Emerich, Sue Miller and Teema Tuck McIntosh,

Thanks to these supporters, a beautiful Gaylord Archival Exhibit Case will be a permanent fixture of the Cheyenne Room. It is featured in the ‘Bridging Cultures’ exhibit with native American bronzes. This exhibit immerses viewers in the untold stories of the frontier, discovering the rich tapestry of indigenous peoples who once called this land home long before Cheyenne’s establishment in 1867. Through this groundbreaking exhibit, we intricately weave together narratives that illuminate the profound significance of these tribes and their enduring relationship with Cheyenne Frontier Days™.

GFWC Women’s Civic League of Cheyenne-

This grant enabled our Education Coordinator, Jean Krause, to purchase interactive technology for instruction in the Hole in The Wall Children’s Room. Jean will utilize this hardware for children’s art lessons, storytelling, and line dance lessons, creating unique opportunities for engaging instructional programming.

Delta Kappa Gamma- These extraordinary

ladies helped support various educational programming thanks to a generous grant. This grant helped support our summertime Kids Western Art Camp which focuses on various relevant artists, including indigenous, disadvantaged, and West and Southwest-focused artists. It also enabled our Volunteers to go on a field trip to the Pine Bluffs Museum and the Pine Bluffs Archaeological Interpretive Museum. This experience was a very inspiring trip, focusing on the history of this region. This grant made

By: Lonnie Reese Educational tours to the historical Dereemer Ranch and Burnett Land & Cattle dairy farm possible. Generations of history associated with the land owned and operated by the Dereemer family were apparent. The inner workings of a large dairy farm were fascinating to our guests. A standout takeaway shared by all was just how impeccably well-kept and valued the animals are to these ranchers.

BLUE FCU- Sponsored our 2023 Cowkid

Camp- which included captivating experiences for the children, including visits with herding dogs working their sheep pack and a hands-on experience with a farrier and 2023 Miss Frontier Jordan Johnson’s fabulous horse, Grey Goose! Thank you, BLUE!

Union Pacific Foundation Grant- The UP

has generously awarded the Museum a grant to support a new bronze sculpture featuring the importance of the railroad’s significance and history to Cheyenne. This project aligns with their Community Spaces directive to create, sustain, or expand artistic and cultural experiences offered to a broad, diverse audience and ensure equitable access. This initiative aims to preserve and share the unique culture and history of the local community. This bronze will be erected outside the Museum’s walls for our community’s beautification for generations to come.

FEMA-Homeland Security is keeping us safe

with a generous grant to help us implement enhanced security for our Museum and guests with outside lighting and security cameras. These are essential aspects and needs we will fulfill through this grant. Our generous grant partners’ unwavering support has breathed life into our vision and empowered us to amplify the cultural resonance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ legacy. With heartfelt appreciation, we acknowledge the indelible mark these grants have left, shaping a vibrant educational space that bridges communities and ensures the enduring legacy of our shared heritage.

Donors’ Generosity

Celebrating the Journey of Our Museum with a Heartfelt Thank You As the year draws to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on the incredible journey our Museum has undertaken and we are filled with gratitude for the unwavering support of our donors. Your generosity has driven our success, propelling us toward new heights and ensuring the preservation and celebration of Western heritage for generations to come. Every contribution holds profound significance and is pivotal in sustaining our day-to-day operations and our vision of growth. Your generosity is the foundation of our mission to be an authentic and culturally dynamic cornerstone of the Rocky Mountain region. In particular, we extend our deepest thanks to those who have contributed to our capital campaign. Your commitment to our cause has been extraordinary, and your financial support has played a pivotal role in transforming our vision into a reality. Through your donations, we have embarked on ambitious projects, expanded our exhibits, and enhanced the overall museum experience for our visitors. As we conclude Phase I of the campaign, 2024 sees the completion of our fundraising for Phase II and the beginning of that construction scope. As we look back on the past year’s accomplishments, we are reminded that none of them would have been possible without your support. Your generosity has not only funded bricks and mortar but has breathed life into the spirit of our Museum. It has enabled us to create

By: Lonnie Reese immersive exhibits, educational programs, and community outreach initiatives that connect people with the Western frontier’s rich history and its diverse cultures. The impact of your contribution goes beyond the walls of our Museum; it reverberates through the communities we serve and the cultural landscape we aim to enrich. Your belief in the importance of preserving and sharing the stories of the American West and Cheyenne Frontier Days™ has empowered us to take bold steps forward, reach new audiences, and continue to foster a deeper appreciation for our shared heritage. We also recognize that your contributions extend beyond the financial realm. Many of you have dedicated time, expertise, and passion to our cause, further enriching the collaborative spirit that defines our museum community. Your belief in the value of preserving Western heritage has created a sense of unity and purpose that propels us forward. As we usher in a new year, we do so with immense optimism and a profound sense of responsibility. Your continued support will be instrumental in shaping the future of the Old West Museum, allowing us to build upon the foundation we have laid together. We are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and are deeply grateful to have you by our side on this remarkable journey.
