Dear Members and Donors,

I hope this letter finds you well and in good spirits as we move into the exciting months of February and March at the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Old West Museum. Thanks to your generous support, we continue to share the fascinating history and rich western culture that make this region so special. We are thrilled to invite you to participate in the upcoming events and activities that bring this heritage to life.

February Activities

February has been an exciting month at the Museum. We welcomed several organizations, including the Wyoming Non-Profit Network and Kiwanis, and we were honored to celebrate Duane Von Krosigk’s 90th birthday here at the Museum. Duane was the General Chairman of CFD in 1978 when the Museum first started, and he played an instrumental role in its foundation—one of our important founders. It was a privilege to celebrate such a milestone with him.

We were also excited to introduce a new event on February 20, as we partnered with Vintages for a wine tasting experience! For all of our whiskey enthusiasts, stay tuned— we’re working with Chronicles Distillery to host a whiskey tasting event in October.

For our Hall of Fame members and above, your Hall of Fame ballot should be in your mailbox. Please remember to return your ballot by March 14.

March Activities

March is shaping up to be an amazing month at the Museum. We kick off the month with the Western Spirit Art Show and Sale, opening on March 8 and running through April 19. This is a fantastic show with unique pieces, including a wide variety of miniature artworks available for purchase that evening. We’re excited to showcase the work of two Laramie County Community College students who have made it into the show this year. Additionally, we look forward to hosting several students at the seminar.

We are still seeking sponsors for the Western Spirit Art Show, and there are sponsorship levels to fit every budget. Your support is essential to the success of this show, which highlights both emerging artists and seasoned professionals. The seminar is an invaluable opportunity to foster talent and teach artists successful business practices that will help them thrive in their careers.

Your Support Matters

Your continued support makes all of these experiences and programs possible, and we are deeply grateful for your commitment to preserving our Western heritage and sharing it with others. We encourage you to visit the Museum, attend events, and invite friends and family to enjoy the unique experiences we offer.

As a valued member or donor, you are integral to the Museum’s success. Please stay connected by following us on social media for the latest updates on events, exhibits, and special member perks.

Thank you once again for your generosity and for being such an important part of our community. We look forward to seeing you at the Museum in the months ahead!

Warm Regards,

Coming in Exhibits 2025

Hello Museum members! Welcome back to the Exhibits Corner, your go-to spot for all things new and exciting at the CFD Old West Museum. We’ve been hard at work behind the scenes, and I’m thrilled to share what’s coming soon!

Western Spirit Art Show & Sale

The team and I are deep in preparation for this year’s Western Spirit Art Show, and let me tell you—it’s going to be incredible. The caliber of work this year is outstanding, with every single medium (acrylic, oil, pastel, photography, sculpture, and more) represented at its absolute best. With such high-quality pieces, we’re expecting some competitive bidding, so be sure to have your checkbooks ready! Join us for the opening night on March 8th, where you’ll get the first look at these remarkable works in person. If you want a sneak peek, head over to our website (https://www.oldwestmuseum.org/western-spirit) to browse the digital gallery. But trust me—nothing beats seeing this art in person.

New Exhibits Coming Soon!

We’re also rolling out several new exhibits leading up to Cheyenne Frontier Days™:

• Vandewark Room Overhaul – This space is getting a major transformation to house some incredible new displays, including:

• 100 Years Ago – A deep dive into CFD and Cheyenne history from 1925, featuring stories like the Notre Dame football team’s visit, the birth of our modern CFD parade, and even a mysterious missing cabin (Stolen? Lost? You’ll have to visit to find out!).

• Chris LeDoux & Lane Frost Displays – Two legendary rodeo icons, brought to life with never-before-seen artifacts.

• Miss Frontier Buckskin Display – Showcasing the evolution of these iconic outfits and the history behind them.

• Cheyenne Room Update – Our Native American exhibit will be going into hibernation, so if you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to stop by before mid-April. In its place, we’ll be debuting a History of CFD Rodeo Exhibit, packed with rare artifacts that tell the story of CFD’s evolution since 1897.

• Contract Acts Exhibit – In the Rotunda, we’re working on a one-of-a-kind tribute to Romeo Entertainment, CFD Night Shows, and legendary performers. Without spoiling too much… let’s just say this exhibit will literally be a stage to celebrate music and entertainment at CFD.

These exhibits are all set to open before Frontier Days, so keep an eye on our social media for updates, teasers, and special event announcements. I’m excited for everyone

to see what we’ve been working on, and in the meantime, I hope to see you at the Art Show Opening on March 8th!

Meet Volunteer Coordinator: Bryci Achter

Hi there! My name is Bryci Achter and I’m delighted to be taking on the role of Volunteer Coordinator at the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Old West Museum. Born and raised in Cheyenne, I left briefly after graduating with a degree in Business Administration from the University of Wyoming but returned for the wind… I mean the aggressively fresh air. I couldn’t imagine raising my family anywhere else! I love the outdoors and you can find me on some kind of trail in all seasons. I have always had a passion for history and consider myself a lifelong student. I’m looking forward to meeting and working with all of the people who breathe life into the past at the Museum!

Meet New Board Member: Bill Gentle

I was born in Douglas and attended New Mexico State University and the University of Wyoming. I worked in State Government for 26 years at the WY Dept of Agriculture and was Director of that agency for Governor Sullivan. I was also director of the WY Department of Tourism for three years and Director of Wyoming State Parks and Historic Sites for three years. Following retirement from the State I was a farrier for 14 years. I have served on the CFD PR Committee for over 25 years. My wife, Sue, and I have been in the horse business for over 50 years and during those years I worked on ranches, rodeoed, played polo and have been showing versatility Ranch Horses for the last 11 years. Sue and I have two children, Shawna is a nurse in Colorado and Justin and his wife Julie are ranching near Chugwater and have a small farm in Wheatland.

A Legacy of Leadership and Passion at 90 Celebrating Duane Von Krosigk:

The Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Old West Museum was thrilled to host a special 90th birthday celebration for Duane Von Krosigk, a key figure in the Museum’s history and a long-time supporter of Cheyenne Frontier Days™. His dedication to the Museum and the community has left an indelible mark, and it was an honor to celebrate this milestone with him.

Duane’s journey with Cheyenne Frontier Days™ began in 1969 when he first volunteered on the Night Show Committee. His leadership quickly rose to the forefront, and by 1973, he was appointed Night Show Chairman. Duane’s influence continued to grow, serving as Ticket Chairman in 1974 and 1975, during which time his Ticket Committee produced the iconic CFD theme song, “Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Here We Go Again.”

In 1975 Duane was the liaison between the Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce, the CFD General Committee, and the CFD Planning Board prior to his engagement as the CFD General Chairman beginning in 1977. In that role, he also worked with the CFD Planning Board to create the new Exhibition Hall and forwarded the idea of having tennis courts inside the building in the off-season.

As General Chairman from 1977 to 1979, Duane’s vision brought significant change to the event, including the addition of the first-ever Friday night show, which featured performances by Jerry Jeff Walker and Red Steagall. He also founded the “Buckle Club,” a group of ex-committee

chairmen who continued to support CFD’s growth.

Duane’s efforts extended beyond just the shows. Through his leadership, a crucial property exchange with the Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce and Laramie County allowed Cheyenne Frontier Days™ to obtain the “New Pavilion” building. This building now houses the Museum and the CFD Mercantile Store. The creation of the CFD Old West Museum was inspired by the donation of the Phipps Collection of Carriages to Cheyenne Frontier Days™. In addition, Duane’s committee played a pivotal role in providing $100,000 in seed money to make the Museum a reality.

Several months ago, Duane visited the Museum, and Josie Molloy, the CFD Old West Museum Executive Director, had the chance to connect with him. During their visit, Duane shared stories from the past, reflecting on how far the Museum has come. It had been a while since Duane had been back, and he was visibly pleased with the Museum’s renovations and its ongoing success.

“Duane’s leadership and passion were instrumental in the creation of the Museum, and even today, he remains a passionate advocate for its success,” Molloy said. “It was a privilege to hear his stories and gain a deeper understanding of our history. We are incredibly fortunate to have Duane’s continued support, and it was a true honor to host his 90th birthday celebration at the Museum.”

As the Museum continues to grow and evolve, Duane’s legacy remains a cornerstone of its success. His vision, commitment, and contributions will always be remembered as vital elements of Cheyenne Frontier Days™ and the Old West Museum’s rich history.

a Broadcast across the Plains

On May 18, 1925, a momentous event in Cheyenne’s history occurred when KOA, a General Electric Station, broadcast news about Cheyenne and Cheyenne Frontier Days for the first time via the airwaves. The broadcast was a live two-hour affair that would be broadcast from the Rialto Theater in Denver. Most of the program was to be music performed by Cheyenne’s greatest musical talent. The program featured the Cheyenne Lions Male Quartet, violin and piano solos by Clyde G. and Alice Clark Ross, the KOA Orchestra and Soprano solos and mixed quartet solos with Marguerite McIntosh Boice (founder of the future W-Heels) being the lead soprano. The highlight of the program was an address by the first woman governor of the United States, Nellie Tayloe Ross. The intent of the program, and particularly Mrs. Ross’ speech, was to entice everyone tuning in to come to Wyoming to see its natural beauty, and indulge in that great western celebration of world renown, Cheyenne Frontier Days™. Those who listened were in for quite a night. The program began at 8 p.m. and continued until 10.

Here is the highlight of the program, the address by Nellie Tayloe Ross. This was the first time that she was ever broadcast:

Frontier Days and the Wyoming of Today

“The last frontier is gone! No longer within the boundaries of continental United States are there new lands open to conquest, and the sons and daughters of the hardy pioneers who gave themselves to the development of the West cannot today satisfy their spirit of adventure by the advancement upon new frontiers. They may only preserve the memory of the romance of those early days upon the plains.

“Such is the primary purpose of the celebration held annually in Cheyenne, to which it is my privilege tonight to invite all to whom the mysterious and awe-inspiring ether may convey this message. For five days beginning July 20, and ending the night of July 25, the capitol of Wyoming will lay aside its normal activities to assume once more the habillments of the frontier and to re-enact the life of those inspiring days when Wyoming and the West were being re-claimed from the wilderness of nature.

“No American who honors in his heart the fortitude and ability of the brave men and women who laid here the foundation of what has now become the mighty West can fail to be enthralled by this spectacle – the Cheyenne Frontier Days which is being repeated this year for the twentyninth time. The period it represents is gone forever, but in all the history of our country there was probably never one of

more fascinating interest. During Frontier Days the departed glamor is once more restored. Again, the cowboy presents himself with his broad-brimmed hat, his flaming shirt and neckerchief, his high-heeled boots and whirling lariat, for the assembling of equipment the cowboy knows no restraint. The skillful horsewoman of the plains likewise contributes her full chare to the daring sports.

“A more picturesque scene could scarcely be imagined than that which is offered in the vast arena before the crowded grandstands. Among the 60,000 people who viewed this impressive spectacle in 1924, there were registered representatives from every state in the Union and many from across the seas. Either simultaneously or in a series of events the entertainment affords, undoubtedly, more thrills than can anywhere else be found in the period of one afternoon. Day after day during the celebration lovers of the sport return to enjoy a repetition of the unique program. Here they will find not alone the thrill of that epic conquest of the prairie by the pioneer, but also the more immediate exhilaration of the contest of horse with horse, and rider with rider; the Indian pony, sleek and swift; the bucking broncho, wild untamed Pegasus of the plains, mounted and mastered by the cowboy; and most exciting and spectacular of all perhaps, the skill and strength displayed by the cowboy in capturing and subduing the wild steer. Even the stolid Indian, having reluctantly withdrawn before the progress of civilization, is brought from the reservation and is a striking feature of the show. He again dons his war paint and feathers and in all the splendor of his savage regalia, by war dance and stimulated attack, gives us a glimpse of the day when these savages struck terror to the hearts of the earliest settlers.

Nellie Tayloe Ross (far left) attending 1925 Cheyenne Frontier Days™, sitting next to Vice President Charles Dawes. Photo by R.R. Doubleday.

“To this celebration, Cheyenne and all Wyoming invite you that you may see reproduced the scenes of a day that is gone. You are invited also that you may see what the pioneers have built and what may yet be accomplished by those who would avail themselves of the opportunities offered by our wonderful state. I would urge upon Cheyenne’s guests at Frontier the pleasure and profit to be derived in further travel in Wyoming. They would find, I feel sure, a surprising revelation in our marvelous climate, variety of scenery and diversity of resources. Upon what might impress the tourist at first only repellant, baren hills, roam great herds of cattle and flocks of sheep which have constituted in the past the basis of our chief industries. Beneath the surface also in many such places lie hidden great treasures of mineral wealth. Even the farfamed Salt Creek field, richest in the world, presents to the eye only the appearance of barren waste.

“Wyoming, the eighth state in area, has, perhaps, greater natural resources than can be found in any other in the Union. Much progress has been made in their development in recent years and there are yet offered alluring opportunities. The oil industry which has already yielded vast fortunes gives promise of unbounded possibilities in the future. There are yet great untested fields of black oil which are without doubt of great value, and also immense beds of oil shale holding in store supplies of oil which may be levied upon when present sources have been exhausted. The state has, too, enough coal to supply the nation for a generation and vast iron deposits which have scarcely been touched.

“In addition, to wealthy of mineral resources, two large Federal reclamation projects, an extensive system of irrigation, together with advanced methods of cultivation, have resulted in such increased agricultural production as to make farming one of the leading and substantial industries.

“Fully 87 per cent of the inhabitants of Wyoming are American born. Having come to a new state from all sections of our country, and having brought the characteristics and viewpoints of each, they have formed a tolerant, liberal-minded and interesting people. The result is an absence of provincialism which be at once apparent to the stranger within our gates.

“Our state is fortunate in that revenue from oil royalties has made possible the building of such highways as ensure the tourist comfortable travel through beautiful and productive valleys, splendid forests, and into mountain regions of majestic grandeur.

“Many who have come as casual tourists or as guests to our famous dude ranches or other mountain resorts have responded to the spirit of the West, have found the charm and lure of Wyoming irresistible and have returned to become permanent and loyal citizens.”
