Dear Friends,
As winter finally settles in, it is with great cheer that the CFD Old West Museum greets a new year full of possibilities. Coming in a matter of days, our 2024 season is ready to kick off with our Western Spirit Art Show and Sale. Nearly half of our artists are enjoying their first appearance at our Museum and the art that I have seen so far is stunning. I heartily encourage you to set the winter doldrums aside and join us to experience a fresh and vibrant look into our west.
We are also on the verge of another great beginning with the pending arrival of Josie Molloy as our new Executive Director. The Museum Board and staff are eager for her to take the reins and lead us forward towards a bright future. A special reception to welcome her will be held in conjunction with our annual Western Spirit Patron Night on April 11. We will open the doors to you, our members, at 4pm for an exclusive member-only hour.
Finally, I wish to extend my deep appreciation for your support while I have served as the Acting Director of the CFD Old West Museum. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve in this capacity and I thank the Board for putting their faith in me these last few months. Most importantly, I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to my wonderful staff. Through their good spirit, excellent attitude, unparalleled professionalism and unwavering teamwork that the CFD Old West Museum has been able to operate as smoothly as ever. They have made my experience a delight and I am pleased to have them as my colleagues.
With Warm Regards,
Mike Kassel Acting Executive Director

Milestone A Found
By: MiChael KaSSel
As we were investigating the history of Cheyenne Frontier Days™ for future editions of Stageline, we stumbled across a marvelous find that has evaded us for years.
Frederick W. Angier, the “father of Frontier Days,” has long been a mystery. While there were many accounts of his role in founding the celebration, and numerous visits to Cheyenne thereafter, there has never been an image of the man anywhere to be found. To our great fortune, we discovered his obituary. While a sad occasion, the information from the papers here in Cheyenne led us to the San Jose Mercury News on May 8, 1924. Included in the obituary was this image of an elderly Angier, who still fits the description attributed to him many years before. The kind article written about him highlights many of the characteristics that surely endeared him to the first Frontier Committee. The people of San Jose also felt fortunate in having known him, but were not aware of the significant role he played here. They do, however, highlight his later life which is very helpful in getting to know the man he was.
The obituary read:
San Jose Mercury News May 8, 1924 p13c4
“Former Railroad Official Enters Last Long Rest”
With the death yesterday of Frederick W. Angier another of nature’s noblemen was passed into the great beyond and San Jose has lost one of its most progressive citizens, one it can ill afford to lose.
Mr. Angier was born and educated in Belfast, Maine, and in early life entered business in Boston Mass., where he was most successful. In 1893 high officials of the Union Pacific Railroad company, who had long known him, secured his services for their company with headquarters in Denver. , Colo. From that city he was transferred to San Jose in November, 1907 as general agent and has resided here continuously since, although he was retired from the railroad service when the war brought about the consolidation of operations by the government.
Soon after his retirement, Mr. Angier was seriously injured and was bed-ridden for many months but finally was able to get about with the aid of crutches. Since then he lived a retired but by no means inactive life, taking, as always, a keen pleasure in every civic movement and obtaining much joy in being able to get about among his host of friends and of being of slight service in whatever capacity he could serve his fellows.

Secured Park for City
While acting as manager for the Union Pacific in this city, Mr. Angier made a wide circle of friends among the traveling public and a great number of them remembered him for his many kindnesses and efforts to be of service and when they again visited San Jose he was the first to be looked up and acquaintance renewed.
While serving the railroad company the deceased took active part in many civic improvement projects and was personally responsible for the work which later resulted in the city’s acquiring the Gore Park at the intersection of First and Market streets.
Of kindly disposition, optimistic in the extreme, lofty in his ideals and always having a good word for and to all he met, his memory will be enshrined in the hearts of a large number of personal friends while an equally large number will be genuinely grieved at the passing of one who had shown himself a true friend and gentleman.
Mr. Angier has been gradually failing in health for some time as a culmination of his injury in 1917, but had not been confined to his bed until late Tuesday afternoon when he was stricken with the illness which ended in death shortly after noon yesterday.
He is mourned by his wife, Mrs. Josephine L. Angier, and one daughter, Miss Helen Oaks Angier.
Funeral services will take place at 2:30 o’clock Friday afternoon from the late home at 600 South Fifth street. The body will be conveyed to his place of birth for interment.

Beginning of Year Exhibits Update
Hello cherished Museum enthusiasts!
Welcome back to the exhibits corner, your go-to source for all things happening within the vibrant walls of our beloved Museum. I’m thrilled to bring you up to speed on the exciting developments taking place, keeping our Museum alive with creativity and innovation.
First on the agenda is the muchanticipated Western Spirit Art Show & Sale, a cornerstone of our cultural calendar. Amanda, Curtis, and I have been diligently preparing for what promises to be our best show yet. The Carriage Hall layout is finalized, and the minis, which will be showcased in the Cheyenne Room this year, have been carefully arranged. Despite the challenges posed by limited space and an abundance of impressive art, we’re confident this show will captivate and delight our audience.
Mark your calendars for the Grand Opening on March 2nd at 5 pm, running until April 14th. We invite you, your friends, and family to join us for a diverse display of art spanning various mediums, styles, and subjects. The miniature show, featuring 12x12 or smaller pieces from the main show artists, promises affordability without compromising on quality.
In other thrilling developments, get ready for a remarkable transformation in our Hall of Fame exhibit, led by Curtis, the Hall of Fame Committee, and myself. Together, we’ve embarked on a journey to revamp the current Hall of Fame Hallway
By: Brad JorgenSen
into a more expansive and engaging experience. The Hall of Fame exhibit is relocating to the Rotunda, boasting over 5 times its current space!
With this expansion, we’re introducing new elements to enhance your Hall of Fame experience. This includes dedicated sections for the upcoming 2024 Hall of Fame Inductees, a showcase of 4-8 past Hall of Fame members, and a digital kiosk allowing you to explore the rich history of all past inductees. But that’s not all – stay tuned for an additional section in the Rotunda, currently under wraps, as we finalize details with a special sponsor. What I can reveal is that it involves the night shows and an immersive photo experience, set to debut by July 2024.
Excitement is building, and we can’t wait to unveil these transformations to you, our valued members. As always, your support and enthusiasm fuel our passion for preserving and presenting the rich tapestry of our museum.
Stay tuned for more updates and, most importantly, don’t miss the Western Spirit Art Show & Sale – an event sure to be etched in our Museum’s history.

Join the Old West Museum as we discover the spirit of the West at the 43rd Annual Western Spirit Juried Art Show & Sale. Immerse yourself in the diverse interpretations of the West crafted by over 100 talented artists, including several newcomers to both this show and the Museum.
You can now explore the entire collection of over 300 art pieces, which includes over 100 miniatures, on the Museum website. However, the true magic begins on March 2 at 5:00pm during the Opening Reception – the first opportunity to witness these captivating artworks in person. Members are invited to join us for an evening of art appreciation, libations, and heavy hors d’oeuvres for just $55. Non-members can join in on the fun as well starting at 6:00pm for $65. The excitement continues at 6:00pm, offering you the chance to buy a piece of art that captures your heart.
To add an extra layer of excitement, witness artists showcase their skills during the live “Quick Draw” event, where they have one hour to create a beautiful work of art that will be auctioned off at 7:45. As the bids rise, we will also draw the lucky winner of the Marietta Dinneen artwork during the auction. If you haven’t secured your raffle tickets for this exclusive piece, make sure to stop by the Museum before the event!

Our outstanding selection of artwork was juried by our panel of jurors: Georgia Rowswell, a celebrated Summer Show artist; Daniel Maw, an art instructor at LCCC; and Hannah Butterfield, a Design Specialist at LCCC. These jurors will also be selecting winners for the show from the exhibited artwork. However, your voice matters too – if you attend the Opening Reception, you can participate in selecting the People’s Choice winner by casting your vote.
If you can’t make it to the Opening Reception, the art will be available for public viewing starting March 3 through April 14. Don’t want to miss out on the chance to bring your favorite artwork home? Fear not, as Proxy sales are available. For more information on Proxy sales, please reach out to me at amanda.marshall@oldwestmuseum.org.
Come and be part of this celebration of artistic expression and the spirit of the West. By attending, not only will you have a great time, but you’ll also be supporting the Museum and the incredible Western artists whose work defines our cultural heritage. We look forward to seeing you at this great event!

Platte Autumn, Fred Cox
Of course, boots, chaps, and cowboy hats draw you to Cheyenne, Wyoming. For more than 125 years, the Best Historic Rodeo, Cheyenne Frontier Days, has celebrated western roots with a festival unlike any other. There is more to this western town. This is where the Wild West lifestyle you yearn for meets a sophisticated, thriving city. You can still wander the streets that wranglers and outlaws once roamed. Now, you can savor artfully crafted cuisine and elevated spirits from inside historic 1800s buildings skillfully transformed into upscale restaurants and flashy cocktail lounges.
Live the legend in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Start planning today.
