Indicates first time participating in the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Western Art Show & Sale

A letter from the Governor

Dear Friends, Jennie and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 41st annual Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Western Art Show & Sale. For over four decades, this sale has served as the kickoff for CFD, allowing visitors to experience the heritage of the American West as seen through the eyes of a group of dedicated and talented artists. Their work in a variety of mediums captures their passion for the Western way of life, and their creativity is to be commended. We extend our thanks to these artists for sharing their interpretations. This year is especially exciting as the CFD Western Art Show & Sale is back, in-person. Keep in mind that a portion of the proceeds support the Museum’s exhibits, collections, and educational programs. We would also like to thank the volunteers that make Cheyenne Frontier Days and the CFD Western Art Show & Sale the worldclass events they have become. Neither would be successful without them. We appreciate your support of the CFD Western Art Show & Sale. Your participation is key to the continued success of this valuable tradition.

Sincerely,

Governor Mark Gordon

A letter from the Art Show Chair Dear Honored Guests, It is my very great pleasure to welcome you to the Cheyenne Frontier Days 125th anniversary celebration with our signature kickoff event, Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Old West Museum’s Western Art Show & Sale. Here you will find the best art the nation has to offer with over 200 new paintings and sculptures by 57 of today’s leading Western artists. After a year of challenges, the art show committee and its volunteers are glad to be back hosting this show in person. I am genuinely grateful for all of their dedication and perseverance throughout these trying times in bringing you this event. Every year I am reminded of the amazing talent artists have in order to capture the beauty of the American West, which is like no other place on earth—from its stunning natural landscapes to its incredible encounters with wildlife. The artists within these pages do not disappoint and their work is reflective of the West’s rich traditions and our shared heritage. We are extremely humbled to present this work to you at our show. We hope you will appreciate them as much as we do. Most of all, thank you for your continued support. You are making a difference in the livelihoods of artists and benefitting the Museum. Preserving the Legacy of the American West

Founded in 1978, the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Old West Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to cultivate a rich, educational space for the diverse, international community served by, and rooted in, the American Western legacy of Cheyenne Frontier Days™. Today, the Museum is a premier historic and cultural resource enjoyed by visitors from across the world. In 1978, a group of volunteers established the Museum with the goal to preserve the historic carriage collection used in the annual Frontier Days parades. Today, with a collection of over 160 carriages, the Museum boasts one of the largest carriage collections in the United States. The Museum now houses a collection of over 149,000 artifacts relating to Cheyenne and Cheyenne Frontier Days™. A truly volunteer-oriented organization, the Museum recognizes that CFD volunteers make the history the Museum preserves. This family-friendly institution has interactive elements in the galleries so everyone can explore the history and stories of those who helped make it happen. From the interactive Children’s Gallery to permanent art and artifacts in the Museum collection, the Museum brings the past to life and invites visitors to immerse themselves in the thrilling history of the American West. Since 1981, the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Western Art Show & Sale has raised nearly $3 million for the Museum. Each year, artists nationwide are invited to portray the past, present, and future of the Western legacy through their art. The CFD Western Art Show & Sale established a program forty years ago for generous patrons to purchase art to donate to the Museum’s Permanent Western Art Collection. The Museum Purchase Program continues to aid in the Museum’s efforts to cultivate the and preserve the story of our Western way of life. Now more than ever, the Museum is committed to providing the best possible CFD Western Art Show & Sale experience to our patrons, artists, and guests. The Museum Board, staff, and volunteers are thankful for all those who have supported this institution over the past four decades. It is truly something to celebrate. Let’s Go! Let’s Show!

My goal is to portray my subjects in a way that transcends a mere representation and takes on a life of its own. Energetic brushwork and color harmony allow the viewer to fill in the gaps. It’s what I leave out that tends to be the most important part of the painting.

Blue Burro Watercolor | 24 x 32 $2,250

inspired him to pick up a pencil and start capturing his own visions of cowboys and the American West. Teal has been painting professionally since 2005; he was predestined to become a Western artist. Teal has always liked to show what makes the traditional West: cowboys not always clean-shaven, shirts not always creased, and their horses’ manes not always long. Teal’s love for the tradition of ranching and cowboying is unparalleled. Up before dawn gathering the cavvy, camping out on the wagon for weeks on end, and playing cards with the crew during a rainstorm. Blake’s portrayal of ranch life and the handful of people keeping it alive is an authentic one. No models, no costumes, simply being fortunate enough to

Growing up in Missouri on a small farm in Ozark, I was always outside riding my horses. If I wasn’t riding, I was drawing. I used to spend hours looking through books and magazines and always admiring other artists’ work. I knew that one day I wanted to be an artist. Being self taught has made it a rather long and challenging experience, more than I would’ve imagined and I still have a lot to learn. That challenge is what keeps me trying harder every time I start a new drawing. I want to find a way to do a better job than I did on the last. Although I have always been known for

their personalities and attitude has been so much fun. Plus I like to add a little humor to their portraits when I can. I want to make people smile when they see my drawings. I recently won Best in Drawing at the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Old West Museum's Western Spirit Show for my drawing of PBR bull, Cochise titled, “We Need to Talk”. Most of all, I have met some wonderful people and made many new friends along this career. That has been more rewarding than anything else.

Circle of Friends Bronze | 16 x 18 x 10 $2,100

I was born and raised in Southern California. As a teen, I rode and trained my three horses. The pathos seen in my sculptures arose from the intrinsic love of caring for my horses. I lived within the precarious surroundings of the suburbs and witnessed one stable after another closing down due to the numerous tract home developments. This gradual encroachment became the catalyst for my sculptures.

Originally from Louisville, KY, I developed an early love for horses and a passion for drawing. However, my love for the West flourished when my family later moved to Colorado. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from Colorado State University I went on to pursue an 18 year career as a fashion illustrator, but now, capturing horses in action is what excites me the most. My intent and challenge as an oil painter today is to immerse the viewer into the atmosphere of my paintings through the use of loose, energetic, and impressionistic

I often paint small color sketches from life then use my sketches to create a larger painting. Although only afforded fleeting glimpses of my subjects, I work to capture a gesture, an expression, a movement, a moment in time. Power and Light Watercolor | 24 x 20 $3,000

From my earliest memories, art has always played a role in my life. My father was a commercial artist as well as a stock horse trainer. I grew up with cowboys, horses, billboard layouts, type books, paint and brushes, and most importantly: encouragement. These beginnings additionally instilled an interest in fine art, art history, and a passion for the American West. When

thinking of the artists that I have most admired, they all had one common thread. They created dramatic impact in their works through a profound understanding of light. Therefore, like my artistic heroes, my images are primarily concerned with the various qualities of light and shadow. The transparent aspect of watercolor particularly suits it to my purposes.

education started at an early age under the guiding hands of my mother. She exposed me to the traditional fibers arts of embroidery, sewing, quilting and more. There was always a project on the go and the need to express myself through art has remained with me no matter where I have roamed. I’m going to translate that into art. In fact, I’m going to use textiles to do it.” Simultaneously I had found my new voice while returning to my fiber roots. Trish Stevenson

Joy Ride Pastel | 20 x 23 $2,900

Trish Stevenson lives in rural Montana, surrounded by the people, animals and action that inspire her paintings. She attributes the Western soul of her work to memories of her grandfather, a locally famous bronc-riding cowboy in his day, who loved horses. While painting in oil or pastel she focuses on traits like strength, determination and the battle of wills, especially in rodeo paintings, and says, “I let the colors and brushstrokes fly,” to achieve the “Spirit of the West.” Stevenson grew up in Colorado, riding and sketching horses, attended the

The Courting Blanket Utah alabaster | 11 x 17 x 8 $3,200

One of my aspirations is to bring life to many of the wonderful stories and legends of various native peoples, especially American Indians. Their stories have such vivid imagery, and it is a joy to illustrate those stories in stone. I enjoy portraying relationships between mothers and children and men and women. I aim to create sculptures that speak to the viewer and make them want to stop and listen to the stories that the sculpture has to share. I have participated in the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Western Art Show & Sale since 1999. I am grateful for the support of the Wyoming Community and

Sky Circus Number Seven Hill of Horses Oil | 24 x 30 $3,600

Although I never believed in Santa Claus, I always believed in cowboys. My search for cowboys to draw and paint started early with Western movies and continued on horseback, roping in college rodeos, and competing on cutting horses. This led to roundups, brandings, red rock canyons, and mountain trails. The images created along the way are the scattered tracks on that lifelong path, and are collected in a new book called Don Weller Tracks, A Visual Memoir. It won this year’s Western Heritage Award from The National Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma City. Among other recent awards, the most
