WHEN THE WIND STOPS BLOWING by Mwewa Sumbwanyambe

TL – can be male or female (as appropriate) AM - must be female OM – must be same sex as TL RM – Can be male or female RM2 – must be opposite sex as RM R – The Rest of the resistance

A large room. The bottom floor of a larger house. The headquarters of the resistance. The walls are covered with posters, slogans and other paraphernalia of the cause that they have all blindly followed for the majority of their adult life. The status quo. They are the resistance to the change that has been challenging their society. As the lights fade up one man THE LEADER sits alone looking out of a window away from everyone else. He is listening to the wind and watching leaves blow around in the distance. he is deeply upset and distracted, a shadow of his former self. In the same room, a group of men and women THE RESISTANCE stand in various places waiting. Smartly dressed in Black and white and Moving around in silence, contemplating what has happened. Where it went wrong? What there next move will be? They’re resistance has been broken and so are they all in one way or another broken. Everything they have based their life on has been undermined. As they move about contemplating their reaction to the challenge of change all we can hear is the outside. Where the wind is blowing hard. Enter ANN MARIE, she is stunning, dressed in red. THE RESISTANCE all notice her as she enters. A mixture of reactions, between jealousy from some of the women and attraction from some of the men. ONE MAN the leaders closest lieutenant looks on at her with hate, but he knows his position and does not challenge her as much as he wants to. ANN MARIE looks on at THE LEADER in his chair, who remains looking out. She is ashamed of him, she is ashamed of losing. Amongst these people she is the only one who has not lost her conviction. For her the fight isn’t over.

(THE above should form a long Silent Movement – where the actors get to explore why people resist change )

AM

OM

don’t start

AM

I beg your pardon

Pause OM isn’t sure of himself He doesn’t know whether to respond truly She is stronger than him

AM

did you say something to me?

The leader turns around OM looks at him for support He receives none TL has no appetite for a fight OM looks around at the rest of THE RESISTANCE They are not going to back him on this either

AM

I said, did you say something to me?

OM backs down 3

She is the stronger of the species And she knows it

AM

I didn’t think so

AM walks down stage into the eye sight of THE LEADER

AM

and you wonder why were losing?

TL

No

AM

Don’t you?

Pause

TL

No

AM

Well don’t you think you should?

TL doesn’t like being spoken to like that He isn’t going to be talked to like OM He stands to exert some authority

TL

don’t talk to me like that

AM

Well somebody has to be a man round here Don’t they?

Someone has to think for themselves for once May as well be me

He walks towards her with purpose (as she’s talking) AM hopes for a moment that he has rediscovered his drive If he has, it is worth the reprimand She stands her ground But then he stops and wonders just what the point is. Why should he bother?

TL

No i don’t I don’t wonder

TL walks around her Slightly up the room The RESISTANCE know what this means It is the first time he has used the word “LOST” AM smiles ruefully She’s disappointed in him In this moment she knows what she must do he has become The pathetic little creature she feared he had. She walks across to the other side of the room And sits provocatively in his chair. He does not fight her challenge.

RM

Lost?

RM2

(reflectively) lost

Pause

AM

your all pathetic Paralysed And pathetic None of you know how to think for yourself It feels like a funeral in here

Pause

RM2 moves to the other side of the room He grabs his coat He starts to put it on indignantly He looks around the room Back at RM and the rest of the RESISTANCE AM looks steadfastly out of the window

RM2

are you coming?

RM doesn’t know what to do She hesitates RM2 begins to walk off He Stops He thinks about saying goodbye

6

But then can’t see the point He exits

TL

You happy now?

Pause

TL

Are You Happy Now?

AM turns around Outside the sound of the wind quietens down. She looks at the TL and the rest of the resistance

AM

Listen Can you hear?

She smiles

The wind has stopped blowing.
