> Agronomy Certificate Level II OVERVIEW

The Agronomy Certificate Level II will take your knowledge of agronomy to the next level.

This certificate builds on the skills gained in the Level I certificate. Upon completion of these courses, you will be able to integrate agronomic concepts and make general recommendations regarding crop production. This program will help prepare you to work in agricultural retail and agronomic support positions, or to better manage your own farm! Each course can be taken as a standalone course to enhance your knowledge in a specific subject area.

> Horse Racing Certificate Programs OVERVIEW

These programs provide an introduction to the exciting world of horse racing, and produce skilled, qualified employees to fill the open employment positions within the horse racing community.

Each program includes 4 months of hands-on learning, and includes a paid practicum. You will learn from top industry professionals, and find out where you fit in as a valued member of the team.

Our Horse Racing Programs are one of a kind in North America, delivered in state-of-the-art facilities, and instructed by supportive, experienced horse racing professionals.

Each Program is highly subsidized

by Horse Racing Alberta, to provide professionally trained horse people in the industry. The students pay a low tuition and their cost for accommodations only, and Horse Racing Alberta pays the rest at a tune of 80% subsidy.

Accepted students are also eligible for one of six Scholarships provided by Horse Racing Alberta (more information can be found at www.thehorses.com). These Programs offer a combination of subsidized tuition and guaranteed employment, making a living doing what you love!

Developed with a strong focus on safety, the program will provide you with the riding skills, knowledge and competence to become a licensed exercise rider.

No horse experience needed, just bring your passion and love of horses and we can train you to be a successful groom. You will be recognized for your ability to ensure quality care for the horses and contribute to a winning team! Work with leading trainers and get valuable practical experience. There is an immediate demand for professional grooms, and our student practicums lead directly to job offers by the time you graduate!

This program is offered in phases that increase your exposure to track riding as you gain the skills and techniques you require to gallop horses safely.

What does an exercise rider do?

They get a rush every time they ride.

What is it like to work in a veterinary clinic or other animal care related business? This veterinary science camp will show you! Through classroom learning, demonstration and hands-on learning opportunities, you will learn basic skills and become familiar with various career opportunities related to veterinary science.

INTRODUCTION TO VETERINARY MEDICINE FOR TEENS If you are between the ages of 13-16, considering a career in the veterinary industry, and want to understand the different roles that are available as career options, then this course may be for you. Authorized Assistants are able to perform pesticide applications under the supervision of a certified applicator without requiring daily on-site supervision by a certified applicator. In addition, Authorized Assistants are able to apply pesticides listed in section 5(11) of the Environmental Code of Practice for Pesticides without direct supervision by a certified applicator.

Agriculture - includes the use of pesticides by ground application for livestock and agricultural crops.

This exciting new program prepares graduates for employment in the growing alcohol spirits distillation industry, or to support those already in the workplace. This program provides applicable and necessary hands-on training, and is committed to the promotion of sustainable production practices. > Introduction to Brewing OVERVIEW

This online introductory program prepares graduates for employment in the expanding brewery, microbrewery and brewpub industries. The program provides insight into brewing science and technology, recipe formulations, and packaging.

Each course may be taken as a stand-alone course or once all five courses are completed successfully, the student will receive an Introduction to Brewing Certificate. Students wishing to enroll in the oncampus Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management Diploma program at Olds College, are eligible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning to receive transfer credit for the applicable courses completed online.

Note: Completion of the online courses does not guarantee admission into the on-campus program. Students must be 18 years of age or older to enroll.

There are no pre-requisites, however, high school education and English language proficiency is highly recommended. It is advisable to take Brewing Ingredients and Brewery Equipment and Technology courses, prior to taking the other brewing courses.

BREWING INGREDIENTS (BRW 7001) In this course, the student will learn how various ingredients in the beer making process affect the style and quality of beer and will examine barley and malting, the growing and selection of barley, the different varieties for malting, and the technology and science of malting grains for different beer styles. The student will analyze malt, specialty malts and adjuncts and examine the growing of hops and varieties of hops that come from principal production areas worldwide.

The student will investigate the effect of hops on the production of wort and the development of beer flavour.

BREWERY EQUIPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY (BRW 7002) In this course, you will learn the basics of unit operations and processing equipment used in modern commercial beer making. The online modules will explore a variety of equipment from filtration to packaging.

> PHC Celebrates 25 Years!

The Prairie Horticulture Certificate (PHC) celebrates 25 years of educating horticulture enthusiasts!

With more than 700 graduates over the past 25 years, the program continues to be popular for professional and aspiring gardeners alike.

This fully online program is focused on the horticultural practices unique to the Prairie Provinces. Also unique, is the collaboration between the colleges and universities of these provinces through a consortium between Olds College (Alberta), University of Saskatchewan (Saskatchewan) and Assiniboine Community College (Manitoba).

PHC provides all the essential tools to work in the horticulture industry so you can start your own business or advance your career.

The PHC is designed as a part-time program with a flexible schedule to accommodate your school and work-life balance. Courses are offered over three 10-week terms per year. Not all courses are offered in every term so be sure to check each specific course offering. The terms start in September, January, and March, with a break during the summer months when most horticulture professionals and enthusiasts are busy. You must complete a minimum of nine courses (equal to 360 hours) to meet the graduation requirements, which takes approximately two years with continuous enrollment.

SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE - GARDEN WRITERS' ASSOCIATION The Garden Writers' Association (GWA) offers scholarships intended as a tuition aid or as an aid in the purchase of textbooks, garden books, and special horticultural projects. The GardenComm Kathleen Fisher Memorial Scholarship is made in recognition of Kathleen Fisher who was the editor of The American Gardener, the journal of the American Horticultural Society. It is given annually in the amount of $500 to any full-time or part-time post secondary or graduate student, including technical schools and community colleges, majoring in horticulture, plant science or journalism, with an interest in garden communications.

CANADA'S OZONE LAYER PROTECTION AWARENESS TRAINING (FORMERLY CFC/ HCFC/HFC CONTROL IN THE REFRIGERATION & AIR CONDITIONING INDUSTRY) This 8 hour environmental awareness training course, based on Environment Canada's "Code of Practice for Elimination of Fluorocarbon Emissions in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems", deals with environmentallycorrect equipment design, proper handling of refrigerants, and will prepare participants for complying with provincial regulations covering refrigeration and air conditioning systems. EXPERIENCED HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR SAFETY CERTIFICATION Industry is seeing a need for their experienced operators to have proficiency certification in order to either bid on projects or abide by insurance guidelines. While this is not legislated in Alberta at this time, Olds College has government approved Heavy Equipment Operator Curriculum. We are able to provide equipment specific Safety Certification. This is based upon our curriculum that has been developed and reviewed with Industry Stakeholders. Prerequisite hours for entry into the evaluations are EQUIPMENT BASED. We require that prior to us evaluating an operator, a sufficient amount of hours on the specific piece of equipment must be logged. Equipment includes loader, skid steer, dozer, grader and packer.

Students that successfully complete the classroom work and evaluation will receive a certificate valid for 3 years.

Participants will gain an understanding of the theory and applications related to the slaughter of all species that are processed in Canada. Refund Policy Refund requests, accompanied by the original course receipt, received at Olds College three (3) full work days prior to the start date of a course will be granted in full, less course specific material fees that have been incurred, non-refundable deposits and an administration fee of 20% of the course tuition or $150, whichever is less. No refunds will be issued less than three (3) full work days prior to the start date of a course.

Non-attendance does not constitute notice of withdrawal. In the event that a course is cancelled, registrants will receive a full refund.

Scheduling Olds College reserves the right to cancel any course in which the minimum student registration is not achieved and to make changes in course content and/or program structure as circumstances may require.

Every effort will be made to advise students by email or telephone of cancellations or changes before commencement date.
