Message from the Director Industry Training & Continuing Education (ITCE) at Olds College of Agriculture & Technology is operated by a passionate and dedicated group of professionals committed to supporting you through your lifelong learning journey as you look to upskill in your current profession or reskill for that next role.

This two-level certificate pathway is designed to meet the agri-service industry’s demand for skilled crop scouting and agronomy professionals. Delivered primarily online, these certificates provide practical, career-focused training grounded in Western Canadian farming practices.

Basic Equine First Aid ON-CAMPUS | ONE DAY A one-day hands-on course with horses covering: what your vet needs to know when you call, conditioning a horse to accept treatment, taking proper vital signs, dealing with lacerations, punctures, colic, choke, collapse, casting, shock, hoof issues, recognizing pain in the horse, sources of pain and alleviation, spinal health, injury prevention and so much more!

Reclamation Workshops

The Surface Land Management courses will equip learners with essential knowledge and skills, preparing them to navigate the complexities of land management in Canada, particularly within Alberta. Students will develop knowledge of foundational principles, regulatory processes and stakeholder engagement.

While students can start with any of the scheduled courses, it is suggested that individuals who are new to Surface Land Management start with SLM 7001 Fundamentals of Surface Land Management.

Experienced Land Agents can start with any available course.

Introduction to Geographic Information Systems Olds College provides introductory customized training in QGIS and ArcGIS Pro. This provides companies an opportunity to train employees with their own data points. These programs are widely used in Agriculture, Environmental Services, Construction Companies, Engineering Firms and Municipal Planning Departments.

INDIVIDUAL HOME STUDY OR CUSTOM GROUP TUTORIAL UPON REQUEST

ON-CAMPUS

All provincial sales outlets carrying regulated Domestic Class Lawn and Garden Pesticides must employ a certified Lawn and Garden Pesticide Dispenser to ensure that consumers have access to correct information regarding pest control, pesticide regulations and safety requirements.

Certification requires completing an exam within one year of registration, and is valid for five years. There are two ways to get your certification:

Production, quality control and introduction to sensory attributes, filtering and packaging are explored. In each module, you will learn with interactive lessons which are followed by a self-knowledge check.

Home Game Butchering OFF-CAMPUS | SIX HOURS A great beginner course for anyone looking to cut and process their own game. Learn proper and efficient techniques that may be easily done from home. These skills will help you get the most out of your carcass. You will have the opportunity to take home the meat you are working on.

Home Sausage Making OFF-CAMPUS | SIX HOURS A great beginner course designed to take the guesswork out of the grind and give you the skills to create the perfect sausage every time.

From the initial meat selection to the final click of the smokehouse door, you’ll dive deep into the science of sausage production. Learn the fundamentals of meatblock selection, grinding and stuffing techniques and the art of mixing spices for bold, balanced flavour.

You will be making 3-5 sausage recipes. Two of the batches will be cooked and served for lunch, the others are yours to take home.

Pasture to Plate Direct Marketing ONLINE | SIX WEEKS Pasture to Plate - Livestock Direct Marketing is a one of a kind short course. Participants will gain skills over a six-week time frame that will help them to better understand livestock agro-food systems, niche product marketing, and how they can apply direct marketing skills to their own operations.

ON-CAMPUS | 12 WEEKS Our immersive Alberta Advanced Education approved curriculum blends online instruction with hands-on training in a simulated work environment, providing industry-relevant project experience. Led by experienced instructors, you’ll master a variety of equipment, including skid steers, loaders, dozers, graders, excavators and rubber tire backhoe. Upon completion, you’ll be equipped with the skills needed for employment in various industries, supported by our industrydeveloped curriculum and mandatory practicum.

Olds College offers specialized training for novice operators across key equipment: skid steer, dozer, loader, rubber tired backhoe, grader and excavator. Each course runs for two to four weeks with up to 75 hours of hands-on equipment time.

Training includes First Aid, CPR, H2S Alive and more, focusing on safety regulations, preventative maintenance and basic operational techniques. Courses aim to equip operators with necessary skills and industrystandard competencies. For more details and customization options, please contact Olds College.

Apprenticeship & Industry Training (AIT) Entrance Exam

Small Engines

ONLINE | THREE MONTHS

Learn theory and techniques to diagnose and repair small engines such as motorcycles, lawnmowers, garden tractors, snowmobiles and other small engines.

The Pre-Apprenticeship Exam Training program consists of four individual courses to prepare participants of the trades industry for success in their continued employment, education and mandatory qualifications exams.

Students who wish to register to become an apprentice and learn on the job, without the prerequisite high school education, must write an entrance exam based on Math, Science, and English Skills.

For those with little to no experience with engines. This course will cover the theory and techniques to diagnose and then hands-on time in the lab on small engines such as lawnmowers, garden tractors, motorcycles and snowmobiles. You will come away with a better understanding of how to diagnose electrical, fuel and mechanical problems and get the engine tuned up.

Each trade requires a variety of different requirements (for example some require Math similar to 20-3, some recommend higher levels), but each of these courses has no prerequisites.

If you’re looking to complete the requirements to achieve the Alberta Transportation “Q” Endorsement, then look no further. After successful completion of the practical exam, and the written exam which must be taken at the Registry, you will be eligible to apply for the “Q” endorsement through a Registry agent.
