Chairman’s Report We are very grateful for the recent positive response to the request for work experience opportunities.

I know how helpful it was for me to be given that chance by my careers master - Gordon Harris (53-88) – who placed me with Jack Edmondson (31-36) when I was a callow 15 year old.

Finally, welcome to our new crop of 2018 leavers who will be receiving the Old Mancunian for the first time.

Things never stand still in the Development Office. With the departures of Ian Thorpe and Laura Rooney last year, two new faces have joined the team that drives the School’s alumni relations and fundraising programmes.

Caitlin Gaslawski, who formerly worked as the students events coordinator for King’s Church, Manchester, ester, has joined to oversee our digital communications, careers and mentoring programmes. Aria Johnston has taken up the role of database and regular giving manager after five successful years in the development team at Balliol College, Oxford. I’m sure that Old Mancunians will make them both feel most welcome.

Alumni relations conferences in Melbourne and Dallas have provided me with the opportunity to visit OMs in far off lands in recent months. It has been great to meet up and share stories with OMs around the world and promote our growing alumni network. Once again, Graduway, the alumni relations company that built the MGS Global Connect platform, covered my expenses for the trips for which the School is enormously grateful.

I’m writing this as the full force of GDPR comes into effect at MGS. From now on, we will only be communicating with OMs who have provided their communication preferences to the School. Interestingly, only 1.5% of OMs have chosen to opt

out of all communication.

This figure is unrivalled in the charity sector and highlights the ongoing strength of the Old Mancunian community.

Hong Kong Raymond Chan (88-95) hosted the latest OM event in Hong Kong at the Hong Lok Yuen Country Club. Plans are in place to host this event every year so get in touch with the Development Office if you are moving to Hong Kong.

Australia OMs gathered under Sydney’s famous Harbour Bridge and in Melbourne last March to renew acquaintances and raise a glass to the School.

In Adelaide I met John Bell (38-43), the first man to set eyes on the surface of Mars! John moved to Australia in 1961 to work for the organisations supporting tests and trials of mainly military systems at the Woomera Rocket Range in northern South Australia.

When on duty one afternoon (15 July 1965) at the Woomera deep space facility (DSIF 71), his equipment, operated on behalf of the US Jet Propulsion Laboratories, received the first pictures from the planet Mars obtained by the Mariner 4 spacecraft. Although imperfect, he and a colleague were able to translate a tiny portion of the Martian landscape.

Both Neville and Al have retired to Green Valley, Arizona, and enjoy reminiscing about their time at MGS during and after the War. They don’t miss the Manchester weather!

MGS Hosts Labour Symposium An audience of over 50 braved wintry conditions to participate in a debate organised by MGS Politics Department - on the future of the Labour Party.

Chaired by our Head of Politics, Richard Kelly, the debate centred on the views of four panellists, all with MGS connections. Chris Matheson, Labour MP for Chester (79-86), Imran Ahmed, Labour Party special advisor (89-96), Sam Wheeler, Momentum organiser and Labour Councillor for Manchester Piccadilly (99-06), and Afzal Khan, Labour MP for Gorton (the School’s constituency) duly addressed the issues of Brexit, economic management, taxation and party strategy in a debate lasting over an hour, interspersed by a series of robust questions from audience members.

OM Football The OM tournament consisted of 8 teams including ‘The Invincibles’, with players in their early 50s, to the 18 year olds of ‘The Leavers’ team. A great tournament took place with ‘Beardwood’s Beauties’ beating ‘The Leavers’ comfortably 2-0 in the final.

Chess In a break with tradition, four teams, each made up of Old Mancunians and pupils, enjoyed a match play chess tournament.

The team led by the School’s number one player, Fide Master Daniel Abbas (09-18), emerged triumphant. After the battles on the chess board, OMs made their way to Rusholme for a welldeserved curry!

Phil Wade Rugby The 16th Old Boys Phil Wade Memorial Rugby 7s was held at MGS in March. Old Mancs turned up and put on a festival of open and fast flowing rugby.

The skill level and commitment from all the players was superb and the whole day had a great sporting feel about

it. The leavers from 2017 managed to go unbeaten throughout the afternoon and their captain Ruaidhri Power (10-17) picked up the trophy, presented by Phil’s father Derek.

Golf Days Manchester This year’s winner of the navy jacket was current parent, Gary Rowson. owson.

Next year’s Golf Day will take place on Friday 14 June, teeing off at 10:00 am. Venue TBC.

Woking The winner of the ‘OWL’ L L’ was Don Clark (73-80) with 35 points and Graham Williams (71-78) was runner up with 33 points. The camaraderie between the players was obvious and enjoyed by all.

Next year’s Golf Day at Woking Golf Club will take place on Tuesday 2 July teeing off at 1:00 pm.

OM Cricket Day The 1st XI cricket team played a T20 game against a team of Old Mancunians on Friday 22 June.

OM XI won by 7 runs.

Ali Tahir (09-16) explained after dinner how MGS had given him the most beneficial of springboards which he is now able to use to his advantage at university, both academically and also because of the numerous extra-curricular activities he undertook at MGS. Dr Amin Astewani (03-10), in his talk entitled, ‘Dare to be Wise - The Quranic Conception of Wisdom’, spoke about the search for excellence.

For those of you who were here in the swinging sixties, you are invited to come along and reminisce with school friends from that era.

For younger OMs who now all leave in the same year, we will be trying a new concept which seems to work well at other institutions and inviting OMs who left in 1989, 1999 and 2009 to come to an ‘09’

reunion where the emphasis will be on your own year group.

Instead of speakers we will hold a two minute open mic, where you will be free to talk about a particular memory you have. There will be a bell to call time. This was great fun with previous decade reunion groups (depending on the number of OMs present we may split off for this part of the event).

The High Master, himself an OM, will be there, with current Year 13 pupils who will be leaving in 2019.

Stephen Davidson (83-95) I absolutely loved my time at MGS and quickly realised and appreciated how well my time there prepared me for the demands of leading a large city day school such as Bradford Grammar.

I was Head at BGS for sixteen years, retiring at Christmas 2011, the timing allowing me to oversee our HMC Inspection (Outstanding) in my penultimate week and to finalise the UCAS references for our son Jamie’s year group!

Not wishing to let the grass grow under my feet, I was honoured to take up the one year appointment as High Sheriff of West Yorkshire in March 2012. Of the many highlights (including wearing velvet, lace, court shoes and tights), the 27 dinners Carol hosted and prepared for High Court Judges (including OM Sir Alan Wilkie) stand out in our memories; our Shrieval Year coincided with the London Olympics and the Queen’s

Jubilee affording us the opportunity to have lunch with Her Majesty and attend a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. It was also a good year to be the former Headmaster of the amazing Brownlee boys!

Retirement has given us more time to spend at our apartment in Mallorca where we often enjoy the company of Sue and Donald Gutenstein as well as Tim Turvey (who became an HMC Head in the same year as me) and Janet Webster, the parents of James CorkeWebster (School Captain in 2004).

I maintain my commitment to the Independent School sector as a Governor and now Chairman at Yarm School, I’m a Trustee of the Abbeyfield Society in Ilkley (close to where we live in beautiful Wharfedale) and a member of the MCC (courtesy of my nomination

by Stanley Goodall), Ilkley Golf Club and (unsurprisingly) the Toon Nation. When placed alongside my role as a Deputy Lieutenant of the County which can involve accompanying members of the Royal Family when they visit the county, officiating at Citizenship Ceremonies and Remembrance Day services I’m kept pretty busy… when we are at home!

Surgery on a cancerous prostate earlier this year further fuelled (if needed) our love of travelling; we regularly visit our son, Jamie, who recently commenced his PhD in Chemical Engineering at Cambridge, visit the USA at least once a

year and had a fantastic month in South America and Antarctica over Christmas.

We have trips to Indochina and the Galapagos planned for the coming twelve months.

From the High Master Sport If you were to drive down Old Hall Lane at present, you might be somewhat shocked to see that part of the front of school looks rather like a motorway construction site.

One Old Mancunian has clearly done just that, as I was stopped just before taking my seat at the Manchester CityNewcastle game to be quizzed on just why such vandalism was taking place on what was formerly the 1st XI football pitch.

I know just how Daniel Levy must feel at the moment.

As with Spurs, the reason for the disruption is to improve the School’s sporting facilities, something which we have been working hard at for the past few years. Some of this has ‘wow’ factor – the new sports hall, for example; other work has been less glamorous, but every bit as important. We have been putting in sophisticated drainage systems, so that the combination of clay and Manchester rain does not lead to the cancellation of fixtures (something which seemed to be a regular feature of MGS sport in my time at the School in the 1980s). This summer we completed one of the final stages of this with the rugby pitches on Fallowfield. There is no longer a risk of drowning when playing rugby for the School!

When the School moved to Fallowfield in the 1930s the reasons for the move were clear. Central Manchester was not a good place for a School: pollution and smog were a constant threat to health, the area of Manchester where the School was situated was less than desirable, and the lack of recreational space meant that the School was not able to offer the range of sports that were becoming the norm for leading schools.

Fallowfield was arguably the most important site for sport in the city at that time. In 1893 the athletic stadium and velodrome had been the site of the FA cup final, between Wolves and Everton,

rightly been the bursary fund, and this will continue to be the case until we reach our goal of becoming needsblind once again. However, the generosity of OMs remains equally important in enabling us to develop the facilities of the School and enhance the educational experience of our pupils.

and in 1934 the cycling for the British Empire Games (what is now the Commonwealth Games) took place here.

The aforementioned building site is the development of a new hockey and tennis facility. We are building a water-based hockey pitch and sand-based tennis courts. Hockey has over the past few years become a major sport at MGS, and we have in a very short space of time established ourselves as one of the leading schools in the North of England.

Alongside this, the numbers of boys playing the sport who would not have traditionally played rugby or football has contributed to a huge surge in participation rates for team sport in the lower years.

Just as the move to Fallowfield was made possible by the incredibly generous donations of OMs, this latest development was made possible, in part, by a very generous gift from one OM. Our primary focus for fundraising wWhas over the past twenty years has

As the Philosophical Society prepares to celebrate its one hundred and fiftieth birthday in 2019, we decided to take a look back at the history of science at MGS. The original founding statutes of the School stipulated a classical education for pupils, and this was followed closely for the first 300 years of the

School’s history. Despite this, the School produced perhaps its first notable contribution to science in the form of OM astronomer and mathematician William Crabtree (1610-44). Crabtree became the first person to observe and record the transit of Venus in 1639.

By the early nineteenth century, both the School and parents were keen for the boys to benefit from a wider curriculum that would include sciences, maths and modern

languages. During this period, the School accommodated a number of boarding boys in the High Master’s house on Long Millgate, and these were the first boys to benefit from instruction in the sciences.

To circumvent the statutes, the School employed masters to teach the boarding boys separately on a Saturday afternoon. Regrettably this led to a two-tier system, with the day boys not benefitting from a broader education. To end this, the School would need to petition the Court of Chancery to change the foundation documents of the School, and this was set in motion in 1837, with subjects including mathematics, English, German and sciences added to the curriculum.

Science began to truly flourish under High Master Frederick Walker. He appointed the first chemistry master in 1867, Dr. Marshall Watts, with a physics master following in 1869. Walker, despite his own classical background, clearly saw the teaching of science as a priority for his school.

He wrote ‘If an orderly and comprehensive system of scientific education could be constructed, it should hold the first place in a boy’s education, literary training the second.’

The School’s first society was founded during this period; the Philosophical Society, which as OMs will know, is devoted to the discussion of science. A dedicated laboratory was created in the buildings at Long Millgate in 1873. In the same year a museum was set up to

support the study of natural history.

The support the School gave to the sciences paid off. Boys from Manchester Grammar School began to win numerous scholarships and exhibitions to study sciences at Oxford and Cambridge. By the time Walker moved on in 1877, the School had added a science side as an alternative to the classical and modern sides already in existence.

Science would continue to flourish at MGS into the twentieth century.

The number of OMs who have made contributions to scientific study and advancement is huge.

Notable names include John Polanyi (chemist and Nobel prize winner), Michael Atiyah (mathematician and Copley and Fields medal winners), Sir Walter Bodmer (geneticist), and Peter Twinn (mathematician and codebreaker at Bletchley Park) What of Dolly, the gas meter, ibuprofen and the blacknecked grebe? The research of Professor Alan Colman (OM 1960-67) led to the cloning of Dolly, Thomas Thorp (OM c. 1861-8) invented the first coin operated gas meter, John Nicholson (OM 193643) patented ibuprofen and Charles Oldham (OM 1881-4) first demonstrated that blacknecked grebes breed in the UK. A list of eminent scientific OMs is beyond the scope of this article, but suggestions of scientific owls to add to our list are welcome.

Academic & Sporting Success

Rugby team tread the hallowed turf of Twickenham

MGS boys have, once again, been highly successful in securing offers for the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. For 2018 entry, 32 MGS boys have received Oxbridge offers, placing MGS in a very select group of top academic schools nationally. This year’s offers follow on from MGS being named as the North-West Independent School of the Year 2018 by The Sunday Times in their schools’ guide.

The MGS Under-15 rugby team travelled to the home of rugby – Twickenham – in March to compete in the Final of the National Schools Cup against Whitgift School.

School Sport magazine named MGS as one of the top ten independent schools in the UK for its varied sporting programme, and we rank as the best school in the entire North of England. In the magazine’s list, MGS is ranked as the fifth best school nationally. The list reflects competitive achievement and honours those schools that take competition seriously. Based on 20 different sports and more than 120 different national competitions, the list was compiled based on success in a range of sports rather than a single sport.

Charlie Muston, 15, who has a visual impairment, was given the opportunity of a lifetime as his guide for the race was Jennifer Kehoe, who guided Welsh Paralympic star and gold medallist at the 2018 Winter Paralympics Menna Fitzpatrick, whom Charlie also used to train 1 alongside. That was a surprise for Charlie, who met Jennifer and Menna by chance in the resort restaurant on the first day and Jennifer offered to guide him.

Despite only having a few practice runs to get used to skiing together, the duo did amazingly well and Charlie won a silver medal in the Men’s VI Slalom race.

MGS translator best in Britain Talented MGS linguist Daniel Farley, 17, has been crowned as the best young translator in Britain after winning a Europewide competition.

Daniel won the European Commission’s annual translation competition for sixth-form students, Juvenes Translatores, for his Spanishto-English translation on the topic of 60 years of the European Union.

There were over 3000 entrants to the competition. And, it is not just in languages where Daniel excels, as

Young skier aiming for the Paralympics A young MGS skier is hoping to represent Britain at a future Paralympic Games after winning a silver medal on his debut at the British Parasnowsport Championships in Tignes.

International Chess A young chess ace, Eathan Gardiner, 9, has been selected to represent England by the English Chess Federation to compete at an international chess tournament in Kraków, Poland.

OM Communications The Modern Language Boys

We were all, of course, different people from those boys in 1968 – and, in the 50 year interval, times have changed out of all recognition – but there was clearly more than enough remaining of what we liked and respected in each other all those years ago to make the reunion incredibly comfortable, relaxed, enjoyable and memorable. As one of our number said repeatedly on the Saturday night: ‘I can’t believe it has been so good.’

Three OMs were the inspiration behind the project, which needed a high level of meticulous planning over nearly a year to try and track down as many OMs as possible, arrive at a date which everyone could make, agree the best venue and circulate our CVs in advance of the event.

It is typical for people at events like this to suggest ‘doing it again some time’, without necessarily meaning it. Those words were used quite a lot over the weekend. In this instance, though, the feeling was that we will do something. Two different proposals for the future have already been floated – and at the time of writing it is just two weeks since we said ‘Au revoir.’

Chris Beswick (61-68)

York was chosen as a great setting per se and with excellent transport links for everyone’s journey from different parts of the UK and, in one case, from mainland Europe. It had the bonus of one of our group being a long-time resident of York, who conducted extensive research and offered us a range of options which resulted in our staying at an outstanding hotel, with a private dining room.

Some of us had seen fellow students at earlier OM reunions in school over slightly more recent times but there were others for whom the time gap was indeed 50 years. For this reason, we all admitted to a slight apprehension as the event drew nearer. We need not have worried. The years did indeed fall away and conversations from so long ago were comfortably picked up as though they had been the week before.

Most of our time was in fact devoted to reminiscences of school – reviving and reawakening lost or half-forgotten memories and filling in some of the missing or slightly wrongly remembered pieces, as one of our number put it so neatly. Those who had been diligent in ‘maintaining the archives’ brought their photos from the time – great triggers for those memories. But, importantly, we still had some time to talk about the present and to look forward beyond ‘the story so far’.

More Rabbinical careers ...

Following the article in TOM Edition 50 we were delighted to be contacted by Rabbi Meir Roberg (47-54) who served as Head of the Hasmonean High School Northwest London for thirty years He now divides his time between Jerusalem and Berlin, where he serves as rabbi to the Orthodox Jewish community and is Chief Rabbi of the province of Sachsen-Anhalt.
