How old is Ian Thorpe?

This has been one of the most difficult articles to write in recent years, not least because the subject matter, Ian Thorpe (62-69), who normally provides an outstanding proof reading and editing service for TOM, is retiring after 40 years at MGS and it would be inappropriate for him to edit his own valediction!

Ian went up to St John’s College, Cambridge, to read English before qualifying as a teacher and working as an Assistant Master at Bromsgrove School. In 1977, Ian returned to MGS and quickly made his mark in the English department and by overseeing the running of the Paton Library. High Master Maland appointed Ian to Lower School Master in 1982, and as such he was responsible for admitting pupils to the School for a ten year period before High Master Parker promoted Ian to the position of Surmaster in 1992.

With the phased removal of the Assisted Places Scheme in 1998, High Master Stephen asked Ian to become the School’s Appeal Director and lead the Old Mancunian response to the loss of government funding to support boys from modest backgrounds. Ian, brought up in Rochdale and a recipient of a direct grant in the 60s, formed an enthusiastic double-act with Martin Stephen. They travelled the length of the country encouraging Old Mancunians to join the bursary push.

By 2004 Ian, now the Director of Development, had overseen a campaign that had raised £10 million and more importantly the School had remained true to its founding ethos of being an academic meritocracy open to boys from all backgrounds.

In remembering his own mother’s struggle to provide him with the necessary bus fare from North Manchester, Ian also ensured that a transport grant was made available to boys in need.

By the time Ian had stepped down from his Director of Development role to become an advisor in 2010, the fund had risen in value to £17 million.

Throughout his time at the School, Ian has always been regarded as one of the wisest owls, providing counsel to High Masters, newly qualified staff and pupils alike. A natural diplomat, the ability to diffuse

the most fraught situations by either a calm conversation or by skilful note, has been his trademark. Ian will be greatly missed and many of us owe him a debt of gratitude, not least the 537 boys who have benefited from means-tested bursary support since 1998.

So how old is Ian Thorpe?

This is the question that is most frequently asked of the Development Office. 66 years old ... but with the benefit of Gift Aid, about 52!

MGS in the US The High Master, Simon Jones and Ian Thorpe visited the east and west coasts of the USA in March this year to meet up with Old Mancunians and launch the School’s ‘Drive US to Endowment Campaign’.

Chairman’s Report With this 50th edition of ‘The Old Mancunian’ we especially welcome those OMs who have recently left the School.

It has been good to see the variety of ways in which people keep in touch – from pub nights to reunions for those with common interests.

We continue to look for new ways in which we can connect people and if you have ideas for particular events please do get in touch with Jane Graham in the Development Office.

It was fitting that the campaign was launched in the USA as the thinking behind the strategy to create a bursary endowment fund has come from a collaboration of minds on both sides of the Atlantic.

Successful events were held in San Francisco, LA, Seattle and New York with Old Mancunians from every decade represented. It was particularly enjoyable to be joined by two of our Principal Patrons in the US, Arnold Thackray (49-57) and Neville Ford (46-52).

Whilst in LA, Director of Development Simon Jones attended the Global Leaders Summit, an alumni relations conference held at the University of California. MGS received an award to recognise the best alumni network for a senior school. This international award, which specifically relates to the MGS Global Connect platform launched in 2016, highlights the strength and depth of the support from Old Mancunians, both for each other and for the School and its pupils. Simon Jones was delighted to receive the award on behalf of the School, not least because the award’s sponsor covered all the costs of his attendance!

Robert Garson (87-94) has recently been appointed, as an MGS representative, to the board of the British Schools and Universities Fund (BSUF). BSUF enables the School to receive tax efficient donations from the USA.

MCC Cricket The MCC cricket match against the School’s 1st XI has become an annual event in the OM calendar and this year the day couldn’t be bettered. The weather was glorious and the atmosphere was warm and friendly.

Guests arrived in time for the start of the game and set up chairs and rugs for what turned out to be a long hot day. There was a welcome break from the heat when the guests had lunch in the Archive Room but the talk was mostly about cricket and they were keen not to miss a ball so headed straight back outside after coffee.

MGS won by 8 wickets with Sam Perry 135* and Oliver Pooler 80.

OM Chess

Exeter Cathedral

The three players who had led the School to a string of National Schools Chess Championships – Dan Fernandez (11-13), Andy Horton (09-16) and Jamie Horton (07-14) – formed the first ever team of millennial Old Mancunians.

The 51st annual commemoration of Hugh Oldham was held in Exeter Cathedral on Sunday 25 June.

They proceeded to score a clean sweep of match victories over two school teams and four other teams of Old Mancunians (pre1970s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s starters). They thus regained the Clements Cup which they had previously won in 2013. Jamie Horton has become the Secretary of the Chess Section taking over from Peter Webster (79-85) after his 25 years of outstanding service.

The short service, at the Bishop’s chantry chapel, was conducted

by Residentiary Canon Becky Totterdell. The High Master and School Captain, Harish Shivakumar, laid a wreath on our founder’s tomb.

After the service, OMs and guests gathered for lunch at the Mercure Southgate hotel, with representatives of the School.

Business Class

The next MGS Business Class event will take place on Thursday 5 October and will be an evening with Simon Arora (80-87), the CEO of retail giant B&M Retail.

Pre-1950s Reunion The pre-1950s Reunion took place in May with 100 OMs enjoying tours of the School and dining in the Memorial Hall with the High Master. In a break with tradition, guests were invited to talk for approximately two minutes about a particular memory after dinner and we were entertained with six or seven short stories from the past with several secrets let out of the bag!

Ernie Fox (43-51) and Derek Torrington (45-50) have both also written reports of the dinner which can be read in Ulula 2017 or at mgslife.org David Kirby (45-48) felt inspired to write in after the dinner: Seventy years on, from afar and asunder, Gathered today are the white and the grey, What do we feel, as we gaze in the mirror, How were we then, at the dawn of our day?

London & South East In 2018 MGS will be celebrating 40 years of politics teaching at the School. Current Head of Politics, Richard Kelly, will be welcoming Old Mancunians to the Liberal Club on Thursday 13 September 2018 for the annual London Dinner with a political theme.

South and West A social event will be held on Saturday 14 October at Tyntesfield, a National Trust house and estate south of Bristol, followed by lunch at the Failand Inn. All are welcome.

Our Founders’ Day service will take place at 11:00 am on Friday 9 February at Manchester Cathedral.

The School welcomed back former School Captain, Dr James Corke-Webster (98-05), to deliver one of the Liberal Arts Lectures in April titled ‘The lost Letters of Jesus’.

James, who studied Theology at Christ Church, Oxford and Ancient History at Trinity Hall, Cambridge is now a Roman historian of the high and late empire at Durham University. The liberal arts lecture series, advertised on the mgs.org box office, is open to pupils, staff and Old Mancunians to attend free of charge.

A couple of visitors both deserve credit for their return either by stint of longevity or geography: Michael Grundy (45-50) moved to Yorkshire with his family straight after leaving school and returned to MGS for the first time in sixty-seven years in March.

Visiting with his daughter and grandson he said, ‘I enjoyed visiting MGS after 67 years. Thank you for the very interesting tour, a trip down Memory Lane; and it was wonderful to see the archives including my form photograph’.

Visiting from Australia with his wife, David Gregory (72-79) commented: ‘Fascinating.

So many stories to hear. Great to see the school developing and changing, very progressive.’ David had previously attended and enjoyed an Old Mancunian gathering in

Sydney and was keen to see another event take place. Take note, our antipodean owls.

From the High Master The Communication Challenge Like many businesses, the School is having to modify its working practices to comply with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) that come into play in May 2018.

This will impact every aspect of the School’s operation including how we manage our relationships with Old Mancunians through the Development Office. We take pride in our strong relationships with alumni and supporters and are mindful of the guidance provided to charities by the Information Commissioner’s Office.

We have now decided that ‘consent’ will be the primary basis for all of our direct marketing activities. This will ensure that the School maintains the very highest standard for its alumni relations and fundraising programmes. We have contacted thousands of Old Mancunians via email, telephone and letter in recent months to ask you to provide us with your communication preferences so that we maintain our relationship with you in your preferred way.

Thank you to all of you, (over 5,000 already), who have already made your preferences known to the School. Your preferences will be acted upon once all the data has been entered and stored on the Old Mancunian database, in time for May 2018. In the coming months we will continue to try and obtain the necessary communication preferences from those of you that we have been unable to reach. If you would like to remain in touch with the School, and are

unsure if you have made your communication preferences known, please contact the Development Office so that we can enable the Old Mancunian network to flourish for the Next 500.

For Sceptics and Technophobes Many of you will remember that there was little concern for data protection as we published three editions of the Biographical Register of Old Mancunians in the last century which acted as a directory through which the School could engage with former pupils and, indeed, provide a mechanism whereby Old Mancs could contact each other.

We have no plans to produce a fourth edition of the register as a book for two major reasons; firstly, the data becomes out of date the minute that it has been printed, secondly, it would be impossible to publish personal data in this way in the modern era.

The Development Office launched the MGS Global Connect platform in 2016 as a way to provide an ‘electronic’ 4th edition of the register. We are delighted with the progress of this initiative with almost 3,000 OMs now registered on the site. I encourage sceptics and technophobes alike to register at mgsglobalconnect.org or to speak to the Development Office for assistance.

From the Archive ‘Grammar School Tracts’ Above: ‘Grammar School Tracts’

One of our more unusual and interesting items in the Archives is a small printed and bound volume entitled ‘Grammar School Tracts’. It is a collection of old School Magazines, which were edited, according to the text on the title page, ‘by the Fifth Class’, and was probably published in early 1841. The volume was donated to the School Library in 1930, but unfortunately the name of the donor is illegible.

The book was dedicated to ‘R Thompson, High Master’s Assistant’; this was Richard Thompson, who was appointed second master in 1841. Thompson was instrumental in resurrecting the School Library in 1845, and he was a great encourager of the pursuit of literature.

There are 9 different magazines represented: • Grammar School Magazine • Grammar School Standard • The Comet • The Herald • T he Grammar School Gazette • T he Grammar School Chronicle • T he Grammar School Observer The first magazine featured in the volume is the ‘Grammar School Magazine’, whose first edition was dated 5 May 1840.

MAGAZINE; and as no paper has been commenced under such favorable circumstances, we hope that we shall not betray the confidence so honorably reposed in us.

An article about Grammar School Tracts appeared in Ulula in 1925 – a rather harsh review, it must be said. The writer notes, ‘All books dwindle someday to … faint ghosthood, but as for this, once it was a book of youth, and youth ought never to have grown so faded.

I suppose those were the days when masters called their pupils “young gentlemen” (which they never do now, having got to know them better), and there is a stupendous dignity and sense of importance about these pages. In those times boys must have played at being men, but we, being wiser in our generation, have almost reversed the process. At least they had no doubts about themselves.

This book is only dull. Somehow it is almost disgusting because it is unnatural. Its writers were not boys; they never wished to be. But neither were they men; they succeeded in being nothing but caricatures.’

There are many questions left us by this book, for example, why were there so many different magazines within the School, and all concentrated in the period 1839-40? Furthermore, who were the contributors and what was the level of readership for each magazine? How far was the writer of the Ulula article correct in his assessment of the attitudes and behaviours of these pupils from 1839-40?

Unfortunately, thus far there are no clear answers and more research is perhaps required. Nonetheless, I would argue that this is a gem of a book, not dull in the slightest, which offers a fascinating insight into the journalistic and literary life of the School, before Ulula began over 30 years later, in 1873.

MGS Medics Recognised A team of aspiring medical students from MGS have been nationally recognised after devising a webbased application that could save the NHS up to £5 million a year.

MGS boys Aizaz Chaudhry, Anthony Le, Vikram Mitra, and Rayyan Nehal attended the third annual Manchester MedX conference and, during one of the sessions, devised an innovative web-based app that could help GPs track whether patients are taking their medication, which could overcome the problems of medication non-adherence that costs the NHS millions every year.

So impressive was the boys’ unique idea that a judging panel awarded it the best concept of the day, defeating solutions put forward by practicing doctors, consultants and health care professionals with years of experience of working in the medical industry.

Cup Final an all-MGS Affair History was made when, for the first time in nearly a decade, our First XI footballers took on our Second XI in the final of the Under19s Manchester Schools Cup. Both teams won through for the final, which was staged on neutral territory at West Didsbury and Chorlton’s ground.

It was the first time in nine years that two MGS teams have contested the final of the prestigious competition, and it was the First XI who ran out winners 5-0 on the day.

It was a fantastic achievement to have two teams from MGS competing for the cup, and testament to the School’s excellent coaches and the determination, talent and skill of our boys.

Codebreakers!

A team of pupils from MGS are among the best code-breakers in the country after coming third in a national cryptology competition.

Naunidh Dua, George Jayson, Takao Ito and AJ Taggart – known as ‘TheGame’ – entered the 2017 Alan Turing Cryptography Competition, which challenged competitors to crack a series of codes. And out of more than 1,000 schools, the MGS boys finished third in the country overall – an astonishing achievement. They were also the first team in the UK to solve one of the puzzles set by the organisers.

In total, MGS had four teams placed in the top 15, making MGS the best performing school in the country.

Best Young Mandarin Chinese Speaker in the UK A talented linguist from MGS is on top of the world after being recognised as the best young Mandarin Chinese speaker in the country.

Kamran Sharifi, 17, won first prize in the advanced category of the 14th HSBC and British Council Mandarin Chinese Speaking Competition Final, held at the British Museum in London.

The competition was open to UK, Channel Island and Isle of Man secondary schools, including sixth-form and further education colleges, making Kamran the best young Mandarin Chinese speaker in the whole country.

OM Communications ‘The Old Mancunian’ is 50!

The first edition of ‘The Old Mancunian’ was produced during the Easter Term, 1999.

It seems hard to believe that, until then, the sharing of news about the School and its Old Boys was restricted to ‘Ulula’ and the paying members of the Old Mancunians’ Association.

As the then High Master, Dr Martin Stephen, explained: ‘In recent years MGS and the OMA have realised that there is a very large cohort of Old Boys with whom they have not been keeping in touch. A series of reunions has attracted good attendances, showing that there is a desire on the part of Old Boys to keep in touch with the School and each other.

This has prompted further discussion and several joint initiatives have been planned, ‘The Old Mancunian’ being one.’

Initially, TOM was produced in-house using simple desktop publishing software and copied in the School’s Reprographics Office.

More recently, the design and production has been outsourced to produce a document

MGS Dynasty Competition At MGS we may not have the likes of the Redgrave dynasty appearing regularly on stage and screen or the Rothschilds in the world of International banking to call our own but we do have families with a long-standing history of their sons attending the School.

which matches other literature and e-literature produced by the Development Office. No doubt, there will be further changes in the future to reflect the relative popularity of printed and screen-read media.

The first edition celebrated two events (both associated with the Bursary Appeal) which seem unlikely to be repeated: the visit to the School in April 1999 of His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, and the performances at Manchester’s Library Theatre by a schools cast of ‘Holly From the Bongs’, a play written

by OM Alan Garner (46-53).

Its pages also included news items which will hold a timeless quality for OM readers: the success of the School’s chess team, a report of the latest ski trip, and individual successes of our rugby and soccer stars.

Recently we realised that Peter Knowles (44-47) has had five grandsons through MGS as well as his cousin and son-in-law. That’s eight members of one family all through our doors at one time or another.

Rabbinical careers On a recent private visit to Sydney, Ian Thorpe enjoyed catching up with his former pupil Dr Ben Elton (91-98) who is now the Chief Rabbi of the Great Synagogue there.

To quote the synagogue’s website, ‘Rabbi Elton earned an MA in History at Queens’ College, Cambridge and a PhD in Jewish History at Birkbeck, University of London. For seven years he worked in the Ministry of Justice in London and then studied for four years at Yeshivat Chovevei Torah (YCT) in New York.

There, he was editor of its journal, a member of its Advanced Kollel and winner of the prize for excellence in Talmudic study.

‘As part of his pastoral training Rabbi Elton undertook residencies as a hospital chaplain and leading a grief support group. He received Semicha from YCT in June 2015, and in addition has Semicha from Rabbi Chaim Rapoport of London and Rabbi Natan Greenberg of Bat Ayin in Israel.’

Ian and Ben talked of other Old Mancunians who have pursued rabbinical careers.

Dr Alexander Kaye (91-98) is a faculty member of the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America, and an Assistant Professor of History and the Saul and Sonia Schottenstein Chair of Israel Studies Designate at The Ohio State University. 2016-17 Tikvah Post-Doctoral Fellow in Jewish Thought at Princeton University.

Anthony Knopf (96-98) is the Rabbi of Congregation Beth Ora in Montreal. He previously served as Associate Rabbi at Hampstead Garden Suburb Synagogue in London and as Rabbi of Camps Bay Shul in Cape Town. He has a BA in Theology and Religious Studies from the University of Cambridge.

Dr Yehuda (Julian) Abel (55-59) was born in Salford and, after Manchester Grammar School attended Manchester Yeshivah and Manchester University (MA PhD). He taught for many years at the Broughton Jewish Primary School and the Manchester Jewish Grammar School. He has lectured at Manchester University where he was a Research Fellow in the Agunah Research Unit and a consultant to the Cairo Genizah project team.
