From the Director of Development MGS and its Global Alumni Network It is rare that we allow a NOM (non-old Mancunian) to write a report in TOM. However, we have made an exception on this occasion as we publish a thank you to the Old Mancunian Community from the CEO & Founder of Graduway, who provide our MGS Global Connect networking platform.

I founded Graduway in 2013 with my father, Dr Marcel Cohen, with the purpose of helping education institutions with their alumni engagement and student career guidance.

Over the course of the past 5 years, Graduway has grown to become the leading provider of alumni networking and career mentoring software. The company is now trusted by 700+ education institutions and non-profit organisations to engage their alumni and provide career guidance to their students. Clients include top institutions such as the University of Oxford, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, and, of course, The Manchester Grammar School.

Graduway’s relationship with MGS started during 2015, the School’s quincentenary year. The High Master, Dr Boulton, and Development Director, Simon Jones, were both in Tel Aviv for an Old Mancunian reunion and they took the opportunity to meet with the Graduway team on their home turf. Within an hour a deal was agreed for MGS to become our first major independent school client in the UK and the rest, as they say, is history …

The MGS Global Connect Platform quickly became one of the fastest growing and most interactive alumni

platforms in the world, and the envy of schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2016, Graduway were delighted to present MGS with an award to recognise MGS and the Old Mancunian community as having the best alumni network for a secondary school.

In the past four years, the Development Office at MGS have supported Graduway in further developing the software, and in November 2018 it was no surprise that the School offered to be the first institution in the world to upgrade to our Next Generation Product.

I’m delighted with how this transition is taking place and I hope that you, the Old Mancunians, will be pleased with your new platform.

Thank you for your patience with this transition but we look forward to a formal re-launch of the MGS Global Connect platform, once the e-newsletters and MGS Global App are back up and running.

I should like to thank MGS and the Old Mancunian community for coming with me on the Graduway journey. The Graduway Leaders Summits, alumni relations conferences held 5 times a year around the world, have been enriched by stories about the Old Mancunian community.

Few academic institutions can compete with Jesus, Gandhi, Nobel and Fields medal winners, a flourishing bursary fund, a truly global alumni network and, of course, Sivori’s ice cream.

The Old Mancunian Advisory Committee (OMAC) will decide who will receive the Awards, which will be presented at the Old Boys’ Dinner in November.

For the second year in succession the Annual London Dinner was a sell-out.

The Liberal Club was the venue for a celebration of 40 years of politics teaching at MGS with Head of Politics, Rick Kelly, the after dinner speaker. Here is a snippet from Rick’s speech: ‘Heseltine’s humiliation that day was far from complete.

Having finished lunch, and as I was leading him into the Common Room, the former Secretary of State for Defence was suddenly accosted by a Lower School boy, who thrust an exercise book into his hand. Heseltine looked even more bewildered when the boy then said: “Please, sir. Could you give this to Mr Shufflebottom?’.

To celebrate PhilSoc’s 150th, 60 OMs, current students and science staff attended an anniversary dinner.

During the event we heard from Sir Walter Bodmer (46-53) and Sammi Chekroud (05-12) recalling their scientific experiences at MGS. The main speech was given by Professor Steve Furber, now a Fellow of the Royal Society. He discussed his research and the aims of his current project, SpiNNaker (Spiking Neural Network Architecture) at the University of Manchester, giving us a fascinating insight into the challenges involved in attempting to build a million ARM processors into a highly configurable platform for brainmodelling applications.

Careers Fair Many thanks to the Old Mancunians who spoke on panels and hosted stalls at our Careers Fair in October.

Old Boys’ Dinner 2018 The Old Boys’ Dinner made a return to central Manchester at the newly refurbished Manchester Hall.

Saturday 11 May, OM Reunion Day Thank you for your feedback about reunions at MGS. This year’s event will be for OMs who started school between 1959 and 1969 and for younger OMs who left in 1989, 1999 or 2009.

An exciting new concept where all ages of OMs will come together on the same day to celebrate their time at MGS. You will be able to take a tour around the School and revisit your old classrooms.

There will be no formal speeches, just the opportunity to share memories with one another in an ‘open mic’ session.

You should have received your invitation to the forthcoming Reunion Day and you can book online at www.mgs.org If you are particularly keen to see a former member of staff or another OM, with whom you have lost contact, please let the Development Office know so that we can invite them to come along too.

One of the most memorable and moving OM events I have attended since starting at MGS took place in Ieper (Ypres) in Belgium during the first weekend in March.

The success of the weekend was in large part due to the mix of sixth form boys, school staff and Old Mancunians. The speeches and discussion which followed over dinner were genuinely educational for everyone present. Rachel Kneale, our archivist, gave a fascinating insight into what the School’s archives have to say about the battles on the Western Front, and Ashley Hern from our History department gave one of his characteristically insightful appraisals of the war, only serving to reinforce the boys’ view that there seem to be no limits to his knowledge! The fact that the conversations continued into the early hours of the morning gives some indication of the success of the evening, and we all remarked that we should look at enabling further such events which bring together boys, old boys and staff in the future.

The principal reason for the weekend was to place a plaque in St Georges’s, an Anglican church in the heart of the city.

On entering the church one is immediately confronted by the sheer number of memorials commemorating those lost during the First World War. One cannot help looking for the plaques of the best-known schools and looking at the tragic numbers lost from their communities. This is not a league table in which anyone would wish to lead, but it is the sad truth that MGS ranks amongst those with the greatest losses, over 500 OMs were killed in the First World War alone. I have always wondered why the independent schools should have such high losses. Mr Hern had explained the previous evening that this was in large part down to the number who would have

served as Junior Officers; they had one of the highest deathtolls because of the custom for them to lead from the front.

The plaque was unveiled during the Sunday morning service, and should you visit Ieper at some point it is positioned on the front-most pew. In addition to this, we were all able to attend the nightly playing of the Last Post at the Menin Gate, a tradition which has been continuous since the First World War, with the exception of the period of occupation during the Second World War. During the service three boys laid a wreath in memory of those commemorated on the gate itself and all others lost in that conflict.

The rest of the weekend was used to visit not only a number of museums and battle sites, but also the graves of a number of OMs who fell in the vicinity of the city. Some of our tech-savvy pupils have recently developed a searchable website which allowed us to find the gravestones and inscriptions of OMs, and read about their lives and how they fell. This information gave a real focus to the cemetery visits. Our aim over the coming year is to enter as much archive data as we have to this site which will form a useful portable archive. Should you find yourselves on a visit to battlefields from the Somme to Gallipoli, I would encourage you to have a look at https:// sites.google.com/site/mgsww1. I cannot promise it will be as engaging as having the School’s historians and archivists on hand, as we did that weekend, but it will bring to life some of the names recorded in stone, and give a small insight into the sacrifice made by so many.

Commemorating the Great War It will not have escaped the attention of Old Mancunians that 2018 saw the centenary of the ending of the Great War. With over five hundred OMs having lost their lives in WWI, it seemed fitting to mark the anniversary in School.

The MGS archives team, Rachel Kneale and Otto Smart, researched and created an exhibition on the theme “MGS and the Great War”. This was staged in the art display area with the assistance of MGS art technician Chrissy Barnes and was available to view in November and December 2018. The exhibition drew upon the rich collection of letters and documents held in the MGS archives which chart the life of the School and Old Mancunians during the Great War. An exhibition booklet which reproduces the text and images is available.

The opening of the exhibition was planned to coincide with the School’s Remembrance Day events. This centenary year, the School decided to stage a dramatic and musical production to convey to pupils the significance of the Great War. The production directly used material from the MGS Archives to tell the story of the School’s involvement in the war effort and the impact on both the School in Manchester and the Old Mancunians on the front line. In addition, our Year 6 boys were invited to the archive room as part of their history lessons. They used archive material to help them trace the lives of pupils captured in a form photograph, ending up at the Memorial Boards. We hope that all these activities will have given our boys a real insight into the human cost of the Great War, and its impact on MGS. Rachel Kneale, School Archivist

In the summer of 2002 Allan Witton and I were high up in the Pyrenees on Foreign Trek. Between us we had done over fifty Scottish and Foreign Treks, including a memorable one to Zillertal in 1985 when we had introduced a young Martin Boulton to the pleasures of Alpine walking.

As we gazed at the superb mountain scenery Allan said, “When we retire from MGS we’re going to miss all this, --- so why don’t we just carry on trekking? --- But without the boys!”

And so it was that Old Trekkers’ Treks began.

For the first OTT in 2006 Allan took six of us, including wives, back to the Stubai circuit we had done on the 1995 Trek. We slept and ate in remote, high-level, Alpine huts so our rucksacs were considerably lighter than on a typical Foreign Trek. The following year we returned to Zillertal, where on the third day our plans had to be completely revised following an overnight fall of a foot of snow (in July!) which covered up all the paths and waymarkers. However, we still managed to reach the unforgettable Berliner Hutte where we enjoyed huge plates of gammon with 3 eggs in the massive, chandeliered dining hall. Since then we have had hutting treks in the mountains of Spain, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and Norway. Last year, on OTT#13 in the Dolomites, we added a section of Alta Via 4 to our logbook of high level trails.

Some of us are now in our seventies and as the years have passed we have included more rest days and our daily mileage has become less ambitious. We still follow the Trek tradition of 50 minute ‘legs’, but the ensuing ‘leg-stop’ has gradually increased from a ten minute rest to almost double that. We have reached twenty summits above 10,000 feet and have slept in eighty different Alpine Hutte, where a bunk-bedded

dormitory or a Matratzenlager is the usual order of the day.

The panoramic views and the alpine flowers are always wonderful and we all regard the annual OTT as one of the highlights of our year.

During our twelve years of retirement Judith and I have been able to experience many other walking routes – ‘tramping’ the Milford Track, the Abel Tasman Track and the Tongariro Crossing in New Zealand, completing the Machu Picchu Trail in Peru and the Tiger Leaping Gorge Trek in China, and hiking up to the base of Torres del Paine in Patagonia.

Other special memories include climbing Sydney Harbour Bridge, snorkelling in Galapagos, watching an awesome total solar eclipse from a mountain top in Yellowstone and being woken by the sound of the Borrowdale cuckoos on

the old Stonethwaite camp site on the morning of my 70th birthday.

I still go to Borrowdale Camp each summer. Other activities to maintain body and mind in reasonable shape include monthly walks with Old Trekkers, playing squash, artistic woodturning, solving puzzles or inventing new ones, gardening, DIY repairs and visiting five grandchildren in Chester, Beijing, and Okinawa.

Retirement doesn’t give you much time to put your feet up.

Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Bronchoscopy Appeal 1

Homelessness Exhibition Sam Parrish-Lyne, 18, was honoured when a collection of his photographs depicting the plight of homeless people in Manchester was exhibited to the public.

Sam’s work formed part of the International Arts and Homeless Festival to raise awareness. His images are designed to challenge people’s perceptions about members of the homeless community, and ask if we are blind to their identity.

Top Linguist Award Daniel Bourne, 16, was one of just 10 nationwide winners of the University of Sheffield’s French Translation Competition.

The competition was open to all Sixth-Form students of French across the country, and Daniel’s impressive translation of an original piece of French text saw him receive a £25 book token and an invitation to take part in a special translation workshop involving French academics, Masters students in Translation Studies and University of Sheffield alumni who work in translation-related fields.

Boys from the MGS Charities Committee presented a cheque for more than £45,000 to help Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) to buy vital equipment.

In 2017, MGS boys launched an ambitious campaign to dedicate their fundraising efforts to assist the hospital in purchasing a bronchoscopy camera.

This was a decision made by the boys, as they wanted to express their thanks and gratitude to the exceptional staff at (RMCH), who have treated a number of MGS pupils in recent years.

Mumbai call-up for MGS Cricketers Four MGS boys flew to India in February after they were selected for Lancashire County Cricket Club’s groundbreaking tour of Mumbai.

MGS boys Ben Sheridan, Henry Murray, Matthew Murthy and George Bell (not pictured), along with MGS teacher Greg Clayton as Tour Manager, were picked for the historic tour, which aims to give overseas experience to the club’s Under-13 and Under-15 cricketers to help develop them into possible future internationals.

The boys were presented with their caps by former England and Lancashire Country Cricket Club great Paul Allott.

Oxbridge Offers MGS pupils have, once again, been highly successful in securing offers for the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

31 MGS boys have received offers from Oxford and Cambridge, placing MGS in a very select group of top academic schools nationally.

Pupils have received offers to study a very wide range of courses, including English Literature, Engineering, History, Languages, Mathematics, Medicine, Classics, Philosophy, Politics and Economics and Law. MGS was named North-West Independent School of the Year 2018 by The Sunday Times in their schools’ guide.

John visited with fellow musician, guitarist Chris Brown, in November, to discuss and demonstrate jazz improvisation from a practical, rather than academic, point of view and writes as follows: “We had just half an hour to cover something that takes a lifetime to master!”

There was a good turnout of interested pupils and staff, and we started early with a blues jam (joined by James on piano, a good prospect for the future) because of the time limits.

We played an original blues-based tune, then “Autumn Leaves”, as a basis for questions and discussion.

Our audience seemed to appreciate the playing and raised plenty of interesting questions. We felt it was a worthwhile session, and we both enjoyed it very much. We could have easily carried on for another couple of hours!

We appreciated the school’s hospitality, we were given a warm welcome. School dinners have improved vastly since my day.

Frank Pearson (43-50) recently visited us from Denmark and writes: “Arriving at the school with my daughter, Helén, after the Founders’ Day service at Manchester Cathedral and after an excellent lunch we were joined by my niece, Alice, and her son, James, who is a member of the Junior school. Then followed an interesting and exciting tour of the school led by James and our official guide Luke Barton. Understandably James was very proud to show us around the Junior School.

Thank you to all for giving us such a memorable day.”

James was proud to say: “I enjoyed coming on Founders Day to show Uncle Frank around MGS. It was very interesting finding out what MGS was like 70 years ago and which buildings have changed. It was also nice to meet Uncle Frank, as that was my first time meeting him”.

The Old Common Room The old Masters’ Common Room at MGS, overlooking Birchfields Park, was normally overcrowded. To add to the congestion was a thick haze of tobacco smoke in which were bridge and chess games and the second master at work.

Fumes came, too, from the coal fire and its logs by which Lord James used to sit before prayers. Query. Has any other school had a member of the House of Lords as its head?

In the late nineteen fifties and early sixties the premises had quite a military flavour from the staff who had served as officers in the Great and Second World Wars. But really it was a workday place with tea and milky coffee served at break for a few old pennies a cup, a practice ended when a governor was served one and declared that it would be free thereafter. There were curious events. One day Seton rushed in through the swing door carrying three brief cases, one in each hand and one between his teeth.

On one side of the Common Room was a corridor clogged with staff bicycles at a time when cycling was more of a necessity than a statement. On the other side was an annex which from the early 1960s held a well-stocked and capacious drinks’ cupboard. This was the Bar, deplored in the pages of the Manchester Guardian. Rumour was that it had been donated by a group of non OMs. However it was not totally a room of shame as it also housed industrious markers such as Billy Hulme. A favourite pre-lunch tipple was a Harvey’s Bristol Sherry. This helped to level the masters with those sixth formers who frequented the Anson at lunchtime.
