From the Director of Development Alumni Awards The new Old Mancunian Alumni Awards will honour the exceptional achievements of our alumni.

Recipients of these awards will have demonstrated that Old Mancunians from a wide variety of backgrounds, all with roots at MGS, have excelled in their chosen fields. More details about the awards, which will be presented annually at The Old Boys’ Dinner, are to be found on the insert included with this publication.

Oxford and Cambridge Old Mancunian pub evenings will be taking place in both Oxford and Cambridge during the course of the next academic year.

These informal events are open to all who live, work and study in and around the cities. The King’s Arms on Holywell St will be the venue in Oxford on Saturday 30 November from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Whilst the Cambridge event will take place in the Lent Term at the Eagle on Bene’t St on Thursday 23 January 2020 from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. At both events OMs should simply look for the High Master at the bar and offer to buy him a drink!

Work Experience and Careers Education Work experience and careers education is being managed in the Development Office by Caitlin Gaslawski as of this year.

Access to the alumni database and the relationships the office have with alumni makes this a fitting place for Careers to sit within the School, given that most of our careers support is offered by Old Mancunians.

The opportunity to do work experience is now an option for year 12 boys during Activities Week each June. This year, we were able to provide work experience placements for 75 boys through the help of our alumni community, without whom this would not be possible. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to host a boy this year for a placement.

OM events in the US OM Reunion Day Saturday 11 May 2019 Old Boys, partners and former members of staff returned to school for the sixth reunion of 1960s joiners and this time joined by Old Boys who left in 1989, 1999 and 2009.

This combination not only filled the Memorial Hall but reduced considerably the average age and added an interesting intergenerational exchange of memories and recollections.

Following tours of the school and a three course dinner, an ‘open mic’ session ensued instead of the usual format of speeches.

Guests were invited to come up to the stage to recall amusing moments from their schooldays.

After a hesitant start and perhaps more wine, many came forward.

The enthusiasm became so great that a queue eventually formed in front of the stage.

Following the High Master’s visit to San Francisco last autumn, the spring saw further Old Mancunian events along the West Coast of North America.

OMs met at the Gotham Steak House in Vancouver for the first ever event north of the 49th parallel. Interestingly there are three OMs currently working in academia at the University of British Columbia.

Director of Development, Simon Jones (88-95) , also took the time to meet up with Jack Hadfield (40-43) in Cowichan Bay on Vancouver Island.

Chess Another successful Old Mancunians’ Chess event saw a mixture of youth and experience gather to do battle on the chess board and catch up with friends old and new.

The cup went to Daniel Abbas (09-18), a very recent OM, being pushed all the way by Martyn Goodger (77-81), a veteran of multiple OM Chess events. The quick time control added pressure and an element of chance to the proceedings.

JSOC Lunch On 31 March, the MGS Jewish Society held their annual lunch. As the sun shone through the windows of the Paton library, Society Chairs from bygone years joined the current team along with pupils past and present, to celebrate the Jewish community at the School.

The guest speaker was Adam Wagner (92-99), human rights barrister. He spoke about his journey through the School and how being an ‘out and proud’ Jew was something always supported during his years at the School.

The next JSOC event will be on Sunday 22 March 2020.

Exeter The annual commemoration of Hugh Oldham was held in Exeter Cathedral on Sunday 23 June.

The short service, at the Bishop’s chantry chapel, took place just two days before the 500th anniversary of Hugh Oldham’s death. The service was conducted by Canon James Mustard.

The School Captain, Harrison Kaye, and Vice-Captain, Louis Simms, laid a wreath on our founder’s tomb.

After the service, OMs and guests gathered for lunch at the Mercure Southgate hotel.

Old Boys’ Dinner 2019

The 215th Old Boys’ Dinner will be held at School on Saturday 23 November in the Memorial Hall.

This year the Junior Steward will be Patrick Christys (03-10) who is a political journalist and host on LoveSport Radio, and the Senior Steward, will be Jaideep Barot (85-92) who was appointed Head at Bristol Grammar School following a career in banking with Goldman Sachs.

It seems OMs are not as excited as Charlie was when he discovered a golden ticket in his chocolate bar as only one OM has admitted to finding a G’owl’den Ticket in his edition of TOM. There are four more tickets in this edition, so if one drops out of your copy then please do claim your prize by contacting Jane at j.graham@mgs.org In true Willy Wonka style the winners will receive an all areas tour of school and two complimentary tickets for the Old Boys’ Dinner in November.

Reunion Dinner 2020

The new format for Reunions worked so well in 2019 we have decided to continue with it.

Next year the Reunion will take place on Saturday 25 April when we will be inviting all OMs who started at MGS in the 1950s, together with all those who left MGS in 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010. Please look out for further details and start encouraging your classmates to come along. The more the merrier.

From the High Master School inspections should not be feared Some years ago I was privileged to be sat next to Peter Bottomley, the MP for Worthing West, at a dinner I was attending.

The conversation that evening moved to the absolute need to measure things before any meaningful change can happen.

The example he gave came from the time when he had served in Government, and was responsible for the transport agenda, as Minister for Roads and Traffic. Until that point there had been no detailed statistics kept regarding the causes of road deaths.

This was something he was determined to change and the legislation that came as a result of this was the mandatory wearing of seatbelts, which arguably has been one of the most significant contributors to the reduction of road deaths in this country. The statistics, I think, demonstrated that over 200 lives would be saved each year.

Our conversation moved on to the need for measurement in schools and inevitably arrived at the subject of inspection. Both of us were, I recall, very much in favour of inspection as a

method of providing scrutiny of schools, both for the private and state sector.

Whilst inspections are not universally welcomed by head teachers, I do not fall into that camp, so when towards the end of last academic year I received a telephone call to say that an inspection team was going to descend on the School the next day, I saw it as something to look forward to rather than fear.

I am very proud of what we offer as a school. I am confident that the lessons taught at MGS stand up to the highest levels of scrutiny, and that the outcomes for pupils rank among the very best in the country. I am pleased to say that the inspectors agreed, but do not take my word for it – have a look at the report on the School’s website. I know that many will say that it is easy for a selective school like MGS to sail through an inspection, but the methods used to measure the progress of pupils do live up to the sort of scrutiny which Peter Bottomley would expect. A great deal of care is taken to ensure that it is the progress a pupil makes which is measured and reported on, rather than just the outcome. Whilst the whole inspection report was glowing about

the nature and quality of the education we provide at MGS, the result of a great deal of data analysis is summed up in one sentence, and it is this aspect of the inspection of which I am most proud.

It reads, ‘the progress made by pupils is exceptional, even when considered in the light of their high ability on entry’.

I have not seen this put so explicitly in an inspection report before, but perhaps this should not come as a great surprise for a school which led Leslie Lever, another MP interested in ensuring that government used inspection to raise standards, to comment on MGS in the House of Commons, ‘What the Ministry is trying to do is to see that every boy or girl has an opportunity of being educated to the standard of the Manchester Grammar School.’

I would recommend that you read the inspection report; it does capture something of the School as it is today, and I hope that for those of you who were at MGS in 1965, when Leslie Lever made his comments, there is much you will recognise.

From the Archive MGS Memories Oral History Project This September is the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II, and in MGS history, 80 years since the School evacuated to Blackpool.

Working with MGS archive material relating to the Great War over the past few years has highlighted the need to collect the memories of those who remember WWII. To that end, we have embarked upon an Oral History project to record the memories of Old Mancunians who remember the School during the Second World War. We have so far recorded interviews with three Old Mancunians and have received written memories from a number of others. We also hope to use oral history interviews to fill in the ‘gaps’ that we have in the archives relating to areas such as PhilSoc and Community Action/Service Group.

We recently had the privilege of meeting and interviewing Derick Caldwell, one of our oldest Old Mancunians. Derick has just turned 100 and attended MGS between

1930 and 1935. Prior to MGS he attended South Manchester School, one of three feeder prep schools that were once associated with MGS. He is one of a very small number of Old Mancunians who remember the ‘old school’ at Long Millgate before the move to Fallowfield in 1931.

Derick’s memories and those of other OMs will be made available at some point in the near future, and will of course be retained in the archive for posterity.

If you are interested in being interviewed, we would love to hear from you. Whilst at the moment we are concentrating our efforts on contacting and interviewing OMs who were at the School pre-1945, we would be delighted to interview younger OMs too.

MGS Digital Archive Website Plans are in the pipeline to make a far greater amount of archival material available online. Ulula has been available in a digital format for some time, and we hope to give Old Mancunians access to each edition.

In addition we are planning themed galleries that will give Old Mancunians the ability to explore the rich collections of photographs, videos and documents we hold. Old Mancunians will also have the option of uploading their own photographs and documents from their time at MGS.

Where are they now?

Andrew Mayne (1970-2007) The superannuated life (‘to be retired from a job or post; to become obsolete, out of fashion or antiquated’) has nearly everything to recommend it – except for the occasional awareness that the Grim Reaper is lurking somewhere in the wings. The essence of it is that you can do exactly what you want to do most days ...

We moved from Heaton Mersey four years ago to the ‘soft south’ – to Sherfield on Loddon, Hampshire – in order to be closer – geographically that is – to our daughter and two grandchildren and to our son, Tom (90-97), who lives in London. It’s a bonus to be fairly close to the south coast and under an hour away from Waterloo on the splendid South West Trains.

One downside is the distance at which we find ourselves from many old friends, but we make occasional treks back to the Manchester area for reunions which are usually linked to a weekend when MCFC are at home. My wife, Ann, has always been a true Blue at heart, even though her grandfather, Charlie Roberts who signed for United in 1904, ushered in the first successful period of the club’s history. I should add – I am rather proud of this – that towards the end of this year Ann and I will be celebrating our golden wedding anniversary.

I spend a lot of time reading and I continue to practise a habit I picked up in adolescence – the attempt to write poetry. As a poet, I play in the equivalent of the Vanarama National League.

I published a slim volume, long out of print, in the year before I retired from teaching (2006). I think I have at least a couple more volumes in me before the curtain finally falls. For two or three years after retirement, I worked on a collection of pieces I had written about school life over my thirty-seven years at MGS. My working title was ‘All Bells Will Ring at the Usual Times’: it’s the tag that always used to appear at the end of the kind of admin notices sent out to ‘colleagues’ when there was to be some alteration in routine or the normal pattern of the school’s timetable. (Incidentally, during the 1970s we were told that the school bells continued to ring throughout the night – with the intention of scaring off any would-be burglars.)

However, after a while, I became convinced that I was writing about a school that no longer existed. So, I stuffed the material

into a folder which I may perhaps pass on in due time to the excellent MGS Archives Department.

It’s a bad thing to spend too much time looking back. Poetry is Now. When you’re ‘into’ a poem it brings the absorption of being a child again with a box of paints on the kitchen table.

And you never quite know where a new poem is going to lead you. There is quite a lively ‘poetry scene’ in Reading (the town is about ten miles away from where we live) and I try to make sure that the poems I present to a poetry workshop group called ‘Thin Raft’ – don’t ask me where the name comes from – are usually rooted in the way I see the world in 2019.

LEGO Master Builder Junior School pupil Adhitya Krishnasamy showed he has the skills to become a LEGO Master Builder after winning a UK-wide competition to build an Arctic vehicle.

Adhitya won the top prize in the competition, run by the National Geographic Kids magazine, which challenged aspiring entrants to design specialised transport to help Arctic adventurers explore the North Pole.

The competition was judged by Arctic polar explorer Paul Rose.

Ady designed a fully working model of an Arctic Explorer using his LEGO EV3 Mindstorm set. His snowmobile features an ice-saw, a wind power generator, an infrared sensor, a snow plough, touch sensors and a detachable amphibious vehicle.

MGS Footballers Do The Double – Twice!

A very successful season on the football pitch culminated in our First XI footballers winning a historic double.

Our Under-12 footballers matched the feat of the First XI, winning both the Manchester Cup and the Greater Manchester Cup, beating St Bede’s and Bolton respectively. This was the first time in MGS’s history that two of our teams won the double, which is testament to the hard work and dedication of the players and the MGS coaching staff.

Gold and Silver Medals for Badminton Aces The MGS Under-14 badminton team capped a remarkable season after finishing as the second best team in the country.

The team won gold medals in the county round of the National Schools Badminton Championships, and were then crowned North West champions. The quartet then travelled to the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes where the boys performed superbly throughout, and came away with well-deserved silver medals.

The Maurice Watkins Trophy Matthew Slim, 13, who plays at either centre back or full back, is the proud recipient of this year’s Maurice Watkins Trophy.

The trophy is presented to a player within the MGS Football Club who staff

feel is the embodiment of the ethos of MGS Football, and Matthew impressed everyone with his performances, commitment, always turning up to training on time and giving it his all.

Marvellous Mathematicians MGS mathematicians defeated teams from schools drawn from across the North West to triumph in the Team Maths Challenge Regional Finals.

The competition, organised by the UK Mathematics Trust, was open to all Year 8 and 9 pupils across the North West. After being crowned regional winners, the MGS team went on to represent the School with distinction at the National Finals.

Our General Knowledge Stars Junior School boys showed an astonishing breadth of general knowledge as they won the regional heats of the General Knowledge Quiz, open to all Junior School pupils in the North West.

As a result of their victory, the team travelled to London where they represented the School with distinction at the National Finals, held at the National Gallery.

Chairman’s Report 1

As you will be aware we enjoy a very productive relationship between the School and our Old Mancunian community.

I replied: ‘Hi Stephen – the numbers start from the first dinner in 1781. There was a gap between 1865-79 as OMs stopped the dinner in protest at HM Frederick Walker’s proposal to introduce fees.’

You will read elsewhere about the proposal to introduce annual Alumni Awards – an idea in which our OM Advisory Group has been fully involved.

Peter Berry (63-70) got in touch via Twitter in reply to an MGS Sport tweet about the U12s football team. Peter asked ...

‘I remember when the u-12s used to be called “The Babes” (early 1960s). Any idea when that fell out of fashion?”.

I replied: ‘Hi Peter, I’ve searched Ulula and the last mention of “Babes” in relation to the U12s seems to be 1997, but it doesn’t seem to have regularly been used since the 1980s.”

Perhaps Old Mancunians, particularly retired members of staff can give us a more precise date?

MGS Service Group Ian Orrell (Staff 73-07) is researching the history of The Service Group and Community Action at MGS and is interested in getting in touch with all OMs who have reminiscences of the old Service Group.

He is particularly interested in knowing how the Service Group was set up and how it operated and who the key members of staff were prior to Rev Ian Ross taking over.

OM Visits Paul Doherty (81-88), whose boys Jake and Sam are in Y10 and Y8 respectively, visited school with his nephew James Askew (2001-08) and his uncle, Lawrence Megson (51-58). It was a rare opportunity for all of the family to be together here at MGS. Frank Godley (43-47), who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, returned to MGS with his son David (72-78) in June to reminisce about their respective time spent at Old Hall Lane.

The School’s Archivist, Rachel Kneale, visited G. Derick Caldwell (30-35) who had just turned 100. You can read more about their meeting on page 7.

Don became the President of Ontario Hydro Technologies, having emigrated to Canada in 1957 following his graduation from Manchester University.
