From the Director of Development Civic Launch MGS’s celebration of its 500th birthday got off to a flying start on Thursday 22 January with a reception attended by over 400 people at Manchester Town Hall.

Appropriately we were in Alfred Waterhouse’s Great Hall, decorated by Ford Madox Brown’s famous Manchester Murals.

Welcomed by Manchester City Council’s Chief Executive, Sir Howard Bernstein, guests representing governors, staff, parents and pupils mingled with MPs, civic leaders, university representatives and other friends of the School.

After a short speech by Chairman of Governors Maurice Watkins, Old Mancunian TV historian Michael Wood set MGS in the colourful history of Manchester over five centuries.

High Master Martin Boulton thanked everyone for attending and invited them to attend further events in the course of the year, most of which will take place in Manchester but with diversions including London, Exeter and New York.

The Hugh Oldham Quincentenary Lecture Pupils, staff and parents were privileged to hear old boy Michael Wood (59-66) deliver an illustrated lecture on The Excitement of History to open this quincentenary year’s series of Hugh Oldham lectures.

Born in Moss Side, Michael left MGS with a love of history and theatre and studied History and English at Oxford. He has made his name as the presenter of an exciting range of television history series (Alexander the Great, Life of Shakespeare, Story of India) and is now working on a History of China.

Please Join Us We are in the midst of a momentous year for the School.

You will already have received details of the various events being organised to celebrate the 500th Anniversary and it is good to see the support for these already.

May I particularly encourage you to book for the Old Boys’ Dinner on Saturday 21 November. I know that many people are organising parties of friends, former members of their form, sports team, trek, camp or society.

Cultural Event: Indian Music & Dance Guests were welcomed by Old Mancunian, Ashok Kallumpram.

(70-77) The evening saw MGS pupils, teachers from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (BVB) and an MGS parent perform music to an appreciative audience. Traditional instruments, including the dhol and tabla, were played. There was also a colourful and skilled demonstration of Indian dance.

Established in Manchester in 1994, BVB bases its activities at The Manchester Grammar School, where it offers weekend classical Indian music and dance classes, as well as South Asian languages.

Speaking at the event, Ashok Kallumpram said: “As a proud Patron of the Next 500 appeal, I do support the School’s drive to promote diversity and, even more so, because it is committed to increasing bursary places.

It is wonderful that MGS values and celebrates the Indian community and also lends support to the BVB.”

John Young 68-75 (extract) “This sapere aude business – daring to be wise – can take some courage, of course. And none of us succeed in it all the time. But I have not the slightest doubt that I was trained at MGS to sapere aude as an expected attitude of mind. At Cambridge I was surprised at the number of my contemporaries who were highly intelligent but were unquestioningly accepting of a received view on a topic, even though it didn’t stand much scrutiny.”

Dr Martin Boulton 84-86 & High Master (extract) “Across all independent schools the number of students in receipt of a full bursary, those paying no fees at all, is fewer than one in a hundred. MGS are currently giving bursaries to 212 boys.

The average means-tested bursary support is 92% of the fees. This was made possible by the generosity of our old boys, who have collectively given £25m. MGS is the only school to have done this in this way.”

The History of MGS in 50 Objects These are just some of the comments we have received since we launched our ‘History of MGS in 50 Objects’ project.

The first object, Sivori’s Ice Cream Van, was released online on 7 January 2015. Each object has an article and images published on a dedicated webpage, www.mgs50.net We have also included an online forum so that boys, staff and Old Mancunians can discuss the objects and their memories of school life. The 50th object will be the result of a vote by members of the school community, and Old Mancunians are invited to put forward their nominations for what this object should be via the online discussion forum or by contacting Rachel Kneale (see below for contact details).

From the High Master Social Mobility A few weeks ago, I was invited to take part in a debate with the proposition ‘This house believes that private schools should be abolished.’

Speaking for the motion was Helen Pidd, the Northern Editor of The Guardian; I led the defence. The debate was part of a new forum set up in Manchester by an Old Mancunian.

The debates so far have had topics ranging from ‘This house believes the future is fracking’ to ‘This house believes that democracy is broken’.

The standard rhetoric on the role of private education these days tends to hinge on the number of high profile figures who attended Eton College; the argument is helped by the fact that the Prime Minister, the Mayor of London and the Archbishop of Canterbury are all alumni. When you read the papers these days only one school seems to feature. In fact you could be forgiven for thinking that there was only one private school in the UK.

Rather than offer a defence of elite boarding schools (and there are good arguments one can put forward) I decided to take a different tack, one that I think came as a bit of a surprise to the opposition. The cornerstone of my argument was that far from limiting social mobility, as is argued in the case of Eton, many private schools do more for social mobility than the most highly regarded state schools.

If you look at the top ten state schools based on exam performance, they all have a few things in common. They are selective, they are in wealthy suburbs and the number of pupils on free school meals (pupil premium) is embarrassingly small. The top two schools, Tiffin Girls’ in Clapham and Henrietta Barnett in Hampstead have around 2.5% and 3.5% respectively of their pupils eligible for pupil premium. The top schools in the North West, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls (12th) and Altrincham Grammar School for Boys (87th) have 2.3% and 2.6% respectively.

I therefore went on to argue that if our aim is to increase the chances of access to the top jobs for children from the poorest families the key factor is to ensure that they can attend the top schools be they private or state. Social mobility at MGS was never greater than in the days when it was a direct grant school, when something like half of the pupils had their fees paid by the state. Today, thanks to the fantastic generosity of Old Mancunians and other benefactors, about 17% of pupils attend free of charge on rigorously means-tested bursaries provided by the school, and it is our goal to increase this number.

This proved to be a very powerful argument, and I am pleased to say that it carried the day in the debate, if only by a single vote.

Matthias Completes OU Degree Sixth Former Matthias HoffmanVagenheim has graduated from the Open University with a BSc Honours degree in Maths and Astrophysics, all whilst studying for his seven A-level subjects.

He began the distance learning course at the age of 13, after completing his Maths GCSE at the age of 8.

Kai Sails to Second Place Junior School pupil Kai Wolgram has come an incredible 2nd out of 291 sailors overall in the National Optimist Championships held at Rutland Water.

Kai’s performance has meant that he is 12th in the British rankings, and has achieved the top position for his age group as the highest ranked 10-year old.

Bodyguard Author Teaches MGS Pupils Lower School pupils were treated to an unusual English lesson, thanks to award-winning author Chris Bradford, who is also a qualified bodyguard and trained martial arts expert.

Chris has enjoyed international success with his popular ‘Bodyguard’ book series and he delivered an interactive book recital at MGS, which saw pupils up on stage to aid demonstrations with tools such as secret cameras and a samurai sword.

Theo Hosts ‘Dragons’ Den’ at MGS MGS students presented their entrepreneurial ideas to Theo Paphitis in a ‘Dragons’ Den’ style event and received his honest critique of their efforts.

The winning group pitched a school information management system which impressed Mr Paphitis, and all the candidates received work experience placements with the Manchester-based EV Group, who sponsored the event.

Ben Raises £31,000 for Breast Cancer Charity Sixth Form student Ben Sciama has raised a magnificent £31,000 for local breast cancer charity Genesis by organising a golf event at Dunham Forest Golf Club.

The tournament was attended by 84 players, split into 21 teams, with a further 90 people also joining for the charity dinner in the evening.

OM Sections London & South East A record number of OMs turned out for the preChristmas drinks, sponsored

by OM Sandip Jobanputra, at Balls Brothers, Bury Court.

The major 500th anniversary event in London will be the annual dinner. OMs will be able to attend with guests in the Great Hall at Lincoln’s Inn on Thursday 17 September.

There will be pre-dinner drinks and OM Robert Powell will take questions from guests over coffee. On the same day an OM select cricket match will take place at the Nursery Ground at Lord’s.

Midlands The Section’s annual lunch at the Forest Hotel in Dorridge last November saw some new faces and our oldest member, a vigorous 96. It was an enjoyable occasion, with the High Master as guest of honour. Vice-Captain Will Rooney gave an impressively confident talk.

This year’s event to help mark the quincentenary will be on Saturday 10 October. While the venue is unchanged, there are ideas under development to make the lunch even more special and memorable.

South & West At the Section AGM on 22 June 2014, we agreed significant changes to the Section’s status from 1 May 2015. We adopted a revised constitution and rules, and will gradually hand over most secretarial and financial functions to the MGS Development Office.

Section membership will be automatically open, without subscription, to all Old Mancunians living in the south and west of the country, from west Wales to the Isle of Wight, and from Cornwall to the Cotswolds. All will be welcome at Section events.

Our autumn social event, on Saturday 27 September 2014, took us to Marianne Pool Farm, Clyst St George, near Exeter, for a tour of the Pebblebed vineyard, where several grape varieties flourish on south facing slopes of sandy loam soils, with high

sunshine hours, and low rainfall. Owner Geoff Bowen told us about the challenges encountered in making English wine. Our 25-strong group then moved on to the winery’s cellars near the Exe riverfront in the historic town of Topsham for a tapas-style lunch and wine tasting. Our main event this year is the 49th Commemoration Service in Exeter Cathedral, in pious memory of Hugh Oldham on Sunday 12 July, followed by lunch at the Mercure Southgate Hotel. All Old Mancunians and their guests are very welcome to join us.

Chess Saturday 21 November is the date for the diary. We will be organising a tournament in Manchester in which Old Mancunian chessplayers can compete against each other as well as against current MGS players.

The title of MGS Chess Champion of the Generations will be contested for the first time since 2006 when David Shaw emerged victorious after a tense last-round game against Alex Lewis.

Some of us will then go on to the dinner to celebrate the School’s 500th anniversary.

Owl drop ins Amongst other repeat returners raiding the Development Office biscuit tin, former School Captain, Jimmy Campbell (03-10) caught up with some ‘old faces’, whilst Michael Crick (69-76) came in to meet the new HM – someone else who couldn’t keep away.

And so they begin, the 2015 celebrations.

In the Development Office we have been limbering up with the custard creams and entertaining many Old Mancunians who come in to tour the school, catch up with old class mates and offer wider world wisdom to some of the current boys.

In September, and almost sixty years to the day that they first met in Form 1C, John Somerville, Roger Hall, Philip Andrew and Michael Dearden reunited at school from across Sheffield, Manchester and Cheltenham. Their experience can probably be summed up by Michael’s words “Much to remember – but so much new also”.

Someone leaving as that quartet was joining was John C Gardner (49-54) who was equally impressed by the new MGS “After 60 years, the education given by MGS is amazing.

We were good in our day, but not this good”. John was accompanied by his OM son Edward. (81-88) Of course, our hospitality extends beyond our own.

Fred Briggs (53-59) brought his wife Kay to visit as did John Gillibrand (71-79) with his wife Gillian, both couples being very appreciative of their welcome.

Despite Steve Markey (75-81) referring to MGS as ‘Still the best school in the world!’, we will leave the last word with Chris Turner (01-08).

We shouldn’t really give him a plug but he will be providing some of the entertainment at the November Old Mancunians’ Dinner. In his own words ‘MGS made me what I am today.

Socially awkward, too smart for my own good and disregarding of authority. This has ended up being my job; I thank it for that‘. If you are curious as to whether he has gone into a career in taxi driving, tax collection or taxidermy then you will need to buy a ticket for the Dinner.

Manchester Events December saw the latest of the Manchester pub evenings at the Albert Square Chop House, once more well attended especially given that it was party season.

The next event will be on Wednesday 10 June again at the Chop House, it would be great to see even more OMs attending.

If the pub evening is not to your taste the long standing 20/30 Club based in Manchester do hold periodic events & lunches mainly during the day time. Alex Wells would welcome contact from Old Mancunians who would like more details, see page 8.

OM Letters Can you add to Dr Borrows’ idea?

I’m delighted that Hugh Oldham has migrated from the back entrance to the main quad. As a pupil in the 1950s, who used the Old Hall Lane entrance, it was a long time before I encountered him and I could never understand why such an important person had been put in such an obscure location. But this rather begs the question – what or who, if anything, is now occupying the vacant niche? Or will this be revealed as another of the 50 objects? If not, I see scope for a rotating competitive exhibition, along the lines of the 4th plinth in Trafalgar Square.

Bryan Boardman (41-48) writes: To add to recent readers’ memories of music at MGS in years gone by. ‘I was selected to sing a solo at Speech Day. I was given to understand that ‘Where’er You Walk’ was traditionally the solo in alternate years. Also in the singing (by the whole school) of ‘Hugh of the Owl’ the tradition was for three choristers to sing the sound of the Owl in the chorus. In that year I sang it on my own. Two years later I was again invited to sing solo and the choice of song was given to me – a break

with tradition? I chose another Handel song ‘Art Thou Troubled – music will calm thee’. Traditionally Speech Days were held in the Free Trade Hall. I have always regretted that by bombing the Free Trade Hall in 1940 Hitler denied me the opportunity of singing my Speech Day solo in that famous hall.’

North Mancunians Association J.D.Tunnicliffe (NMS 37-40 and MGS 40-44) wrote to mark the winding-up of the North Mancunians Association – the former pupils of North Manchester School, one of MGS’ three pre-war ‘prep’ schools. In doing so he produced a fine document for our Archive Library, and acknowledged the immense contribution to the Association of Norman Davies, since 1992 secretary, treasurer, chairman and organiser of the annual luncheon. Norman himself visited us in early February, his first visit to the school for over 70 years. He brought the papers of the Association, many of the annual panoramic photographs taken of the staff and pupils of North, and a fine collection of school memorabilia and photographs of Grasmere Camp. We are very grateful.
