Special Awards: The Winners

OSFC Sports Prize: Simoun Torres

Peo was a pleasure to have in the department throughout his time at College, he was always enthusiastic, happy, and gave 100% effort to any and all tasks presented to him. Peo displayed impressive athletic prowess from the onset of his studies with us, and his consistent energy and enthusiasm in both his PE lessons, and in Sport enhanced the department on a daily basis. Peo proudly represented the college at a high standard throughout his two years, he captained the 1st XI Football Team, was a valuable member of the Basketball Team, and attended Volleyball and other extra-curricular activities regularly. Alongside this he was a valuable Sports Ambassador, impressing from the outset at his interview and going on to lead numerous Futsal & Basketball sessions both within College and in the local community. Peo adhered to high academic and sporting standards throughout the pandemic, balancing his studies with peer tutoring, multiple sports and ensuring that his fitness levels, skill-set and ability to progress to Higher Education were all achievable. As a department, we are extremely proud of him on both a professional and personal level, and look forward to seeing him thrive in all aspects of his future.

OSFC Endeavour Award: Naeem Hasan

Naeem was an outstanding student. Despite huge personal challenges and trauma, he gained excellent A Levels in Sociology, Religious Studies and L3 Business Studies. He has now progressed onto study a degree in Childhood Studies at Leeds University. His achievements cannot be underestimated given his circumstances during his A Level education. It is a testimony to his perseverance, resilience, exemplary work ethic and sheer determination that he has accomplished so much in terms of his academic and personal development.

No matter how difficult things were, Naeem was always able to use his sense of humour to navigate the challenges he faced. He always endeavored to help and support others around him when they were struggling. We know how tough this must have been because his own circumstances were difficult, but he always prioritized his attendance and his education. The term ‘Role Model’ does not do Naeem justice. He demonstrated determination to keep trying even if he felt he was failing. Academic work was sometimes challenging, but he never gave up. He asked for help when he needed it and set himself ambitious goals.

Naeem engaged positively with all staff and students. He was really well liked and would help out without being asked. He was generous with his time and volunteered as a college Ambassador meeting and greeting potential students on New Students Day, enrolment of the new year 12 students and other events. It is entirely fair to say that Naeem is an inspiration to others. He has overcome adversity and become; a compassionate, motivated, well-educated member of the community. Naeem recognises that the support he has had throughout his education has had a huge positive impact on his personal journey. This has inspired him to work with children and young adults in the future, and to help others overcome their life challenges and achieve their goals. We are very proud of Naeem, and all that he has achieved.

OSFC Enterprise Award: Sher Ali Raja Mahroof

As well as developing in terms of his academic achievements in college, Sher Ali was also able to set up his own business outside of college where he used his ICT and business skills to develop his own website selling a range of sportswear. He describes his business as drop shipping, where he uses suppliers from China and other parts of Asia in order to support the demands of his customers. Sher Ali did not let his success outside of college affect his studies as he completed his L3 Business and ICT qualifications with a D* as well as receiving a grade B in his Diploma in Financial Studies.

The Helen Ramsden Award for Health and Social Care:

Gugulethu Moyo

Gugu was a charismatic student with a caring and empathetic personality. She stood out from day one in her Level 2 Health and Social Care class where she demonstrated she was willing to work extremely hard. Moving on to the Level 3 Health and Social Care, Gugu approached every situation with a determined and resilient attitude. Her insightful approach in class aided her to become very popular and a likable member of the group. Gugu would always seek out feedback on her coursework and exams in a conscientious manner and did her very best to make all the corrections. During the exam revision sessions Gugu became a great role model to other students as she demonstrated excellent organisational skills. Gugu has achieved great success despite many personal challenges. Her professional and mature manner will carry her to great success as a health and social care professional in the future. We wish Gugu the very best in her next steps

The Mark Anderson Award for Travel and Tourism:

Rajjat Kumar

Rajjat is a real star. He demonstrated the academic ability, personal characteristics and dedication required to make him a worthy winner of this prize. His enthusiasm showed no limits as he worked tirelessly and with amazing persistence and dedication throughout his Travel and Tourism course. He was always willing to contribute to class discussions and he also grew in confidence as the course progressed. Rajjat worked tirelessly, followed feedback meticulously and paid attention to detail and he was a wonderful team member to his peers. He is certainly going to progress and be successful in everything in the future and thoroughly deserved the D*D*D* he achieved. Well done Rajjat and good luck with everything in the future.

The Gloria Oates Award for Excellence and Endeavour: Jamal Akhtar

Jamal is a rare student with an intelligence and curiosity to be admired. Jamal came to OSFC from e-ACT Royton and Crompton Academy with an exceptional set of GCSE results. Jamal impressed from the moment he arrived at his first lessons, having a remarkable thirst for knowledge, technical expertise and outstanding work ethic It was clear from the outset that Jamal was destined for a career in Medicine at a prestigious university having secured A grades in all his subjects at the end of year 12 then going on to achieve all A* grades in his final A levels. Jamal is a wonderfully mature student, quietly and unassumingly striving for excellence in everything he pursues. Jamal is always so positive, polite, and respectful and everyone who ever meets him agrees that he is a really lovely young man.

During his time at OSFC, Jamal threw himself into every opportunity to enrich his medical and college experience and applied himself wholly to extracurricular activities. Jamal personifies the key traits a good medical student should show: a scientific intellect; a caring attitude; excellent interpersonal skills; and a determination to succeed. Jamal deserves all of his successes and we are very proud to see him realise his dream of studying Medicine at University of Manchester. Jamal is truly deserving of this award, we wish him the very best of wishes in his new career and we are confident that he will make an excellent doctor. Well done Jamal!

The Governors’ Prize:

Sophie Porter

Sophie joined Oldham Sixth Form College from The Radclyffe School in September 2020 with a fantastic set of GCSE results. From the outset of her studies at college, she displayed an exemplary attitude; always there, always on time and always fully prepared to learn. She did not let the disruptions caused by the pandemic before her GCSEs, or during Year 12, disrupt her focus on achieving the best possible grades. All her teachers report that Sophie was a pleasure to teach, as she formed productive and supportive relationships with her peers, contributed actively to discussions, and consistently produced essays of the highest standard. It came as no surprise that she achieved outstanding A Level results, with A* grades in both Law and History, an A in English Literature, as well as an A* in her EPQ and a further A in her Psychology AS Level. A phenomenal performance.

Outside of her studies, Sophie was committed to giving something back to the college community. As Vice President of the Student Executive, and a Student Governor, she represented students' views on college developments and policies in conversations with teachers and governors, and played a significant role in a number of successful fund-raising activities for a range of local and national charities.

In Year 12, Sophie decided that she wanted to study Law at university, joining OSFC's Aspiring Lawyers' Programme and also our Oxbridge Group. She participated fully in both groups and took every opportunity to develop her knowledge and skills to make sure she was ready for Higher Education. We are delighted that her efforts were recognised and are very confident that she will excel as a Law undergraduate at Gonville and Caius College, at the University of Cambridge.

Congratulations, Sophie!
