Opening and Closing Doors. I’d like to start this speech with a quote from Alexander Graham Bell. He said: “When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.” When I left Germany this was a bit what it felt like. When I left my house, the door closed. When I left the car at the airport, the door closed. When I got on the plane, the door closed. When I got off the plane in Dunedin after about 40 hours of flight, the door closed and I found myself exposed to an unknown, exciting, new environment.

and he has never been to New Zealand. This is probably why he said that you feel sad and regretful when a door closes. When you come to New Zealand, all the doors that open for you, either by themselves or are opened by all the nice people, they reveal so many amazing things; there is no time to look back.

your side to open doors with you or for you or to help you find the right key for the lock of one especially hard-to-open door. I can’t express how thankful I am for all the things you did for me, Maggie.

During my year here in New Zealand, in Dunedin, at St. Hilda’s, I had all these great people by my side, who opened doors with me and for me.

Melina at the microphone

In the first weeks, I was too busy being filled with awe about all the new things I experienced. Every night I went to bed, overwhelmed by all the things I saw during the day.

Melina in her St. Hilda’s uniform

And when the excitement eased, I started to look at the doors that closed behind me. This would have been the time when I would have looked at those doors, as Mr. Bell would say, “so long and so regretfully”. But this didn’t happen. I researched Mr. Bell a bit

One of these people was Maggie. Whenever there was a problem, she was there. But she was also there when there was no problem at all. Maggie, you are always there for all of us and we can always rely on you. It feels so good to know that somebody is by

And then, there was my host family. Mum, Blair and Kodi, thank you so much. It was great to live with you and you feel like my second family now. I will go back to one of my families and will have to leave the other one behind. I had such a great time with you. It was always fun to be with you guys and you made me feel home. After my first day of school, after only one week of living with you, I already felt like I am going home, to my family, to my house, to my room, to my bed. Thank you

for that, I know this is really special. YOU are special. Other people who were really important during this year were my friends. I never would have imagined to make so many new friends. Both international and especially kiwi girls, thank you so much for an incredible time with you. It was great to have people by my side to laugh with, be silly with, cry with or just hang out with without anything to do. Thanks also to all the teachers here at St. Hilda’s and to all the other students. You might not be aware of this, but the St. Hilda’s school community compared to other school

communities is unique. Because this is such a small school everything is very personal and everybody is so friendly. A simple, friendly, open smile can make someone’s day and at St. Hilda’s, people smiled at me everyday. All the great experiences I made at this school will accompany me for all my life and I will never forget them. But now, after more than a year, it is time for me to close some doors behind me again. In 13 days I will close the door of the house behind me that was my home for 370 days. I will close the door of the car behind me that picked me up from the

airport, drove me around Dunedin and then drove me to the airport again. The doors of the plane will close behind me when I leave Dunedin. And then, after a long flight, the doors of the plane will close behind me again and I will be back in Germany. And this time I will look at those closed doors “so long and so regretfully” because they separate me from the best time I ever had in my life. But I will take the keys to these doors with me so I can open them again, so I can come back to all these people I love and who will be in my heart and mind forever. Thank you!

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. 8.

New Zealand fun facts Who wouldn't love New Zealand. With it's lush greenery, mountains and rain forests? It has the world’s rarest birds, insects and plants. The food isn't bad either with an abundance of lamb and seafood. New Zealand is definitely a tourist and s student’s dream. Let's get on with some fun facts about New Zealand: First known settlers were Maori and were left alone until Captain James Cook arrived in the 18th century. Captain Cook should have sailed on because the Maori warriors killed and ate nine members of his crew. After that traders and others came and fights started. They wanted to trade muskets for fruit and pigs. This period was known as the "Musket Wars". (Gewehre) 

-capital city is Wellington

-largest city is Auckland

-languages are English and Maori

-majority of people are Christian

-New Zealand means, "Land of the long white cloud"

-30 percent of the land are forests

-first country to see the sunrise

-"kiwi" is either a bird or a native

-ostrich steak and black swan carppacio do not taste like chicken!

-New Zealand has two national athems- God Save The Queen and God Defend New Zealand.

-there are nine sheep to every human in New Zealand

-there are 9 billion beef and dairy cattle

-Sir Edmund Hilary was the first man to reach the peak of Mt. Everest- his face now adorns New Zealands $5 bill.

New Zealand has a lot of animals and birds. It actually has the world’s biggest flightless parrot. The world’s oldest reptile. The biggest earthworms. The smallest bats. The only native land mammals. The oldest trees. 

- New Zealand has the highest car ownership rates in the world.

- Bungee jumping which is now a popular and daredevil sport originated in New Zealand.

New Zealand is very broad and open minded with their laws. In New Zealand homosexual marriage and prostitution are legal. Their driving age is 15 and the legal age to have sex is 16. The drinking age is 18 but anyone under that age can drink with an adult present in restaurants. New Zealand has more golf courses and bookshops than any other country in the world. So they must be smart and sporty at the same time.

Another interesting fun fact is the highly acclaimed "Lord of the Rings" was filmed entirely in New Zealand. American producers were skeptical and the fact that Peter Jackson had never directed a film of that magnitude didn't help matters.i
