REGISTRATION POLICIES

• Registration must be made one week prior to start date, unless otherwise noted, to prevent cancellation of program due to low enrollment.

• Olathe Parks & Rec will process registrations on a first come, first serve basis.

• Request for sign language interpreters, inclusion assistant and other special needs must be requested at least two weeks prior to the activity start date, via the Special Needs Assistance request found online at OlatheKS.org/ParksRec • Correspondence/reminders of registrations are not guaranteed to be sent to the participant prior to the first date of the activity.

• You will be placed on a waiting list if the activity is full. We will call you if an activity opening becomes available.

• All registrations are subject to availability and space is limited for all activities. The last date to enroll is listed as the deadline date.

• Olathe Parks & Rec reserves the right to consolidate classes and change locations to ensure that an activity will meet the minimum enrollment.

RETURNED CHECK POLICY

A $25 service charge will be made for any check returned by the bank. The registration will become null and void, if payment for the insufficient check is not made within 24 hours after being notified by registration personnel. *Please note program information, cost, time, etc. may change after the printing of this guide. We may photograph those enrolled for promotional purposes. Enrollment in our programs grants permission for us to use these images.

REFUND POLICY

Refunds will be granted for the following reasons: 1. When an activity has insufficient registrations and must be canceled.

2. To any registrant who is restricted from participation due to a change in the activity location, date or time.

3. To any registrant who is restricted from participating due to medical reasons (doctor’s note must be presented) as long as the request is made before no more than two activity meetings have been completed. A prorated amount will be issued or transferred, if the activity has already started.

4. To any registrant without reason, so long as the request is made at least 10 working days prior to the first day of the program.

All refunds (or transfers) initiated by the participant will be subject to a 5% service charge with a $5 minimum and a $15 maximum to be retained by the department. Please allow up to 20 days for the City of Olathe to process refunds.

CANCELLATIONS

When enrollment does not meet the class minimum, Olathe Parks & Rec reserves the right to cancel activities. To help avoid cancellation of classes, register at your earliest convenience. All class and activity fees, times, dates and locations are subject to change, if the scheduled facility becomes unavailable or if there was an error.

WAIT LIST POLICY

Wait list entries can be made for up to three classes per program session. In the event of an opening, a staff member will contact individuals on the waiting list to fill the opening. If an individual accepts enrollment from the wait list, his/her name will be removed from all other wait lists in the associated program session. Patrons cannot be enrolled in a program and be on a wait list for another section of the same program.

TRIP REFUND POLICY

A full refund/credit will be issued for any program that is canceled.

A full refund may be honored if your spot can be filled prior to the deadline date. Due to advance payment requirements on many of our trips, refunds may not be available. Any refund request must be made with advance notice. Please review each trip’s refund policy prior to enrollment. Olathe Parks & Recreation reserves the right to make changes as necessary to preserve the integrity of the trip.

Please keep a record of the dates and times for the programs in which you enroll. You will be notified if there is a problem with your individual registration, or if a program has been filled, canceled or rescheduled.

Select shelters in Olathe parks are available for reservations. All other Olathe park shelters not listed below are open to the public and considered first come, first serve. Consult the online Shelter Guide, call (913) 971-8563 or visit the Olathe Community Center (1205 E. Kansas City Rd.) for more information.

• Picnic shelters may be reserved beginning Jan. 2, for the period of March 1 - Oct. 31.

• Payment is due at the time of reservation.

• Shelters may be reserved in blocks of six-hour intervals listed to the right. You may reserve more than one time block, but the times cannot be adjusted. The fee is multiplied by the number of time blocks reserved.

• All fees are non-refundable and non transferable - no exceptions.

• Reserving the Gazebo at Frisco Lake also requires you to reserve the Ironhorse Shelter.

S C H O L A R S H I P I N F O R M AT I O N PURPOSE

The City offers recreation scholarships to make recreation programs more affordable to low and moderate income residents.

ELIGIBILITY

Scholarships are based on annual income utilizing the 150 percent level of the current Federal Poverty Guidelines. Olathe Parks & Rec is solely responsible for determining the eligibility of an applicant.

QUALIFICATION

Approval into the program allows you to register for eligible activities at a cost of 50% of the program fee. Most activities, including outdoor pool memberships, are eligible for the scholarship discount.

Olathe Community Center memberships are not eligible for the scholarship discount.

APPLICATION PROCESS

An application with income documentation must be submitted to the scholarship coordinator. Ensure the application is completed, signed, dated and all required income documents that apply to you are included: • • • • • •

Federal Income Tax Return for the previous year.

Child support verification Welfare assistance/alimony Social Security Administration current benefit letter Any Dependent(s) not listed on the income tax return require a copy of the child’s birth certificate or social security card If you received insufficient income to file a tax return, you must submit a notarized “I Certify” form

RESTRICTIONS

CONSIDERATIONS • • • •

Scholarship applications are processed within five to seven working days.

Plan ahead. Your scholarship must be approved before registering for an activity at the discounted rate. There are no holds on classes or refunds on fees.

The City notifies applicants by US mail if their application is approved or not approved.

You must re-apply for the scholarship program in April of each year. All approved scholarships are effective through April 1st.

Applications can be delivered to the Olathe Community Center, 1205 E. Kansas City Rd., or faxed to 913-971-8690.

ADAPTIVE RECREATION

Approved applicants pay 75 percent of the program fee for Special Olympics State competitions. Each participant is allowed one discounted Special Olympics State competition per calendar year while funding is available.

INTRAMURAL VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE

Emphasis on fun, safety, participation, football skills and the proper attitude toward competition. The seven-game season is held at Prairie Center Park on Saturdays and Sundays. The coach will contact parents with exact times and location of practices. At the kindergarten and first grade level, participants will receive an award.

At the second through fifth grade levels, standings are kept and awards will go to the top two teams in each division. If you already have a coach, be sure to list the coach's name during the registration process. Parents are needed as coaches so please apply online if you are interested!

Each team will play six double headers starting Sept. 23 with postseason tournament. Practices and games will be at the Olathe District School gyms and the Olathe Community Center. Players are taught how to become both and offensive and defensive soccer players. They will learn how to move on the field and pass to teammates by utilizing 1v1 and 2v1 drills. Each participant will receive a t-shirt and award.

This clinic is designed to teach the fundamentals of basketball.

The kids will learn ball handling, passing, dribbling, shooting and defense. Over the six weeks they will work on all of their individual skills as well as learn to play as a unit. This class is an introduction to gymnastics apparatus and the development of gymnastics skills. Balance, coordination, flexibility, fitness and strength will be developed.

Baton twirling is an athletic endeavor enhanced through creativity.

It is a challenging sport that combines the skillful mastery of twirling, tossing and catching batons with body movements, while incorporating dance. Come twirl with Ms. Starr, who broke the Guinness Book of World Records at the at the age of 16 by twirling 55 1/2 hours non-stop in Southern California. Shoes: Comfy

Hip Hop Bop is designed to take those kiddos who can't stop moving when the music comes on and turn them into skilled dancers. This class features youth appropriate hip hop music and movement in a super fun inclusive environment, meant to welcome everyone. Following an Amtrak ride to St. Louis, a bus will take participants to the National Blues Museum to re-live the history of blues. Dinner will be served next door at Sugarfire Smoke House. Overnight accommodations will be at the Drury Inn and Suites Union Station.

Breakfast will be at the hotel the next morning, followed by a trip to the arch, with a tram ride to the top. A riverboat sightseeing tour with lunch at the Old Spaghetti Factory will take place in the afternoon, before the final stop to see one of the largest mosaic collections in the Western Hemisphere at the Cathedral Basilica. Prepare for a fun and rewarding job as a lifeguard. Candidates successfully completing the course will be certified in Lifeguarding/ First Aid/CPR/AED, as well as Waterpark Lifeguarding. MAHAFFIE Welcome to the 1860s Kansas Frontier! Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm was the home of J.B. and Lucinda Mahaffie and their eight children. The Mahaffies operated a 320 acre farm located right on the busy Santa Fe Trail, a mile east of Olathe. They served meals to stagecoach passengers and other travelers, in the cellar kitchen of their home. Discover what life was like for the Mahaffies, their neighbors and those travelers when you visit the original 1865 limestone farmhouse, operated today by the City of Olathe Parks & Recreation Department. From Wednesday to Sunday, Memorial Day to Labor Day, weekends in April, May, September and October and many other days of the year, the farm comes to life!

Fall cemetery tours take place at the Olathe Memorial Cemetery, giving participants an opportunity to meet historical figures and learn more about the story of Olathe. Imagine lovely carriages, historic stagecoaches or awe-inspiring six horse hitches pulling freight wagons on parade. This is your opportunity to experience a view from the driver’s seat! Lessons include how to safely harness, hook and drive horses. Lessons provide one-on-one instruction on how to drive horses on the ground and with vehicles.

Enjoy a catered meal served in the 1865 stagecoach dining room by lantern light! You'll be taken to the historic farmhouse by stagecoach, and welcomed by historical interpreters in 1860s clothing. Enjoy a hearty meal of stewed beef and mashed potatoes, green beans, breads and winter preserves. After dinner, visit the animals with a farmer and retire to the parlor for games, a slice of pound cake with fresh whipped cream and a bit of music.

This American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) program, taught by certified instructors, is intended for babysitters ages 11-15.

Participants will learn helpful tips and techniques on care for infants and children, home safety, first aid and managing choking.

Participants will receive a two-year certification in babysitting.

This American Heart Association CPR course is intended for participants who provide care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in hospital and out of hospital settings (physicians, nurses, paramedics, EMTs, nursing students and assistants, RT, PT, OT and other allied health personnel). This class teaches the skills of CPR for victims of all ages (including ventilation with a barrier device and a bag valve mask device), use of an AED and relief of a foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO).
