Multiple Young Leaders Complete Training

T

wenty-seven Oklahoma youth completed Lay Servant training this summer. That’s 27 young people who are trained to serve as new church leaders.

The Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church organizes the leadership camp for youth, called LEAD. This year LEAD was held at Cross Point Camp on the shores of Lake Texhoma,

near Kingston, OK. Basic and Advanced Lay Servant classes covered training in church leadership.

Fourteen attended the advanced class, “For the Common Good - Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts,” taught by Rev. Jeff Hinton serving in Jones, OK. Thirteen attended the Basic Lay Servant Class taught by Rev. Diandra Nelson, serving at New Hope OKC and Sharri Hiller, Conference Director of Lay

The theme of LEAD this year was “3 Simple Rules.”

The small group times and worships were centered around this theme. Campers contemplated “Walking with God,” “Do No Harm,” “Do Good,” and “Stay in Love with God” during their time at camp. Free time was enjoyed at the beach and at the high ropes course. Evening activities included a talent show and Camp Olympics.

LEAD Camp is more than five days of growing closer to God and each other. It is more than five days of honing in leadership skills. It is more than five days of fun. It is all of those things, but it is so much more. LEAD is a Christian Leadership experience you won’t want your student to miss. Please consider sending your youth leaders next year!

Call to Action The Ministry Center will be closed Monday, Sept. 2, in observance of Labor Day. We are grateful for the labor of all who work to keep things running.

The conference is sponsoring 6 regional workshops as a follow-up to our Day of Learning at this year’s annual conference focused on your church’s impact on poverty in your community. Over $40,000 in grants will be available early next year to churches who participate in training and make proposals for new or expanded ministries. Workshops will be held around the state and you can register here. Cost is $15 per person which includes all materials and a meal. Please plan to bring at least two people per church.
