The U-Haul sports a new mural on a previously-blank side panel.
The U-Haul Truck that famous artist and itinerant roadie Bob Waldmire painted, and which sat outside Afton Station for many years, has returned to the road! The Oklahoma Route 66 Association worked with the Francis Tuttle school in Oklahoma City to return the truck to full working order. The students learned about automobile maintenance and repair in the process. The truck drove under its own power for the first time in more than a decade to the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum when the Route 66 Centennial Caravan arrived on June 17th. The original mural by Waldmire remains untouched for now, though it is faded and cracked from years in the sun. The passenger side of the truck, which was blank, now sports a “new” mural, courtesy of Buz Waldmire, Bob’s brother. It came from a draft design that Bob sketched out about 20 years ago, when the truck was still in the planning stage. The interior of the cab is being finished up - after which the Association hopes to take the truck out to events. The plan is to raise funds to create a mobile museum experience in the back of the truck, which will share the Oklahoma Route 66 story (and Bob’s artwork) with visitors in other parts of the state and beyond. Great American Road Rally Tours Oklahoma Route 66 BY RICHARD STEPHENS, JR.
The Oklahoma Route 66 Association supported the Great American Road Rally (GARR) events at Tulsa’s Raceway Park on August 8 and at Arcadia’s Pops on August 9, 2026, by promoting the work of a key event collaborator: the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership. The GARR is a nine-city, 12-day driving experience exploring Route 66 during its centennial year. It blends competitive motorsport challenges, classic car cruises, celebrity showdowns, live concerts, barbecue feasts, and community events to be broadcast on the CW Network. According to Mirko Parlevliet, with Vital Thrills (www.vitalthrills.com), it will be hosted by Ian Ziering on Wednesdays at 9:00 PM ET/PT from September 2 through November 25, 2026, with 12 episodes in total. Ten celebrities are driving a variety of classic and racing cars with dozens of other celebrity guests racing for 10 nonprofit humanitarian causes. Assisting the Road Ahead Partnership in Tulsa, Rhys Martin, President of Oklahoma’s Route 66 Association, met racing enthusiasts at the Raceway. In a statement, William Thomas, Chair of the Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership and Commissioner of the U.S. Route 66 Centennial Commission, explained it was established in 2016 to keep the real Route 66 alive—on the ground, not just in memories, by National Park Service, World Monuments Fund and “from people and organizations from all eight Route 66 states—preservation experts, tourism and transportation officials, economic development leaders, and Route 66 associations. We work to ensure Route 66 is preserved, used, and thrives for its next 100 years.”

Oklahoma a Highlight of the Route 66 Centennial Caravan BY RHYS MARTIN
As the group approached Oklahoma City, they had a welcome of a different kind: a police escort! OKC PD escorted the pack to the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, where several challengers took on the Big Texan’s 72 oz. Steak Challenge.

The next morning, OKC PD once again escorted the Caravan all the way to Arcadia. When everyone stopped at the Capitol, they were joined by a vintage Oklahoma Highway Patrol Car, which joined with another vintage cruiser in Edmond to lead the way east. In Edmond, literally thousands of locals lined the road with signs, cow bells, and whistles to show their love for Route 66.
From June 6th to June 20th, the Route 66 Centennial Caravan traveled from Santa Monica, California to Chicago, Illinois. For three of those days, the Caravan spent its time cruising through the Sooner State...and for the rest of the journey, it was the talk of the trip. Oklahoma showed up in a big way for the scores of people that participated in the drive.
When in Wellston, the Caravan celebrated the unveiling of a new Will Rogers Highway granite marker near the Butcher BBQ Stand. Jennifer Rogers, Will’s great-granddaughter, was on hand for the occasion.
On the morning of June 17th, the Caravan departed Shamrock, Texas and arrived in short order at the Oklahoma border. There, a drive-in speaker art piece created by Josh Waddell was passed from the Texas Association to the Oklahoma Association to carry across the state.
Tulsa was the site of another Big Texan Challenge, this one set up at Mother Road Market. On June 19th, the group continued east, stopping many times before reaching the Kansas border where the speaker was handed off to a Kansas Association representative... and the trip continued.
As the group crossed the border, they were welcomed by members of the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. For the next three days, workers and official vehicles from ODOT waved and welcomed the Caravan in communities big and small. No other state had any official Department of Transportation engagement along the route.

The Erick Fire Department also set the tone for the rest of the journey across Oklahoma, with their ladder extended over Route 66 and an American flag waving in the warm breeze. Although the Caravan couldn’t stop in every community, people came out to see the group come through. In Weatherford, Stafford Air and Space Museum Director Julie Lenius not only welcomed the group for lunch but also paid tribute to author and historian Dr. T. Lindsay Baker, the official Texas representative on the Caravan that tragically died in an automobile accident outside of Flagstaff just days prior. Dr. Baker had donated a number of photographs for display at April’s Big Band Hangar Dance and was an enthusiastic supporter of Route 66 and its history.

PRESIDENT'S PEN The Centennial Year of Route 66 is more than half over. Can you believe it? I’ve been on the road a lot this year and I’ve heard from many of you that it’s been a really good year. Lots of travelers, increased sales, online social media engagement...it seems like just about everyone wants a piece of 66 in 2026. There have been documentaries filmed, interviews with national-level reporters, and TONS of great projects throughout just about every community along the road. We have a story in this newsletter about the Centennial Caravan and I just want to reiterate how special that event was - and how proud I am of how Oklahoma showed up. It was a remarkable experience, but also a tragic one. The loss of Dr. T. Lindsay Baker was a personal one for so many of us on the Caravan; I’d known him for about a decade. It was a difficult decision to continue the journey after the accident, but every interaction with business owners, roadies, local leaders, and everyone that came out to see the Caravan reinforced the fact that it was the right call. Dr. Baker loved for people to experience the authenticity that Route 66 provides and that’s what we were sharing. At the end of August, our Executive Director Julie Akers resigned. She served our organization for two years and we wouldn’t have been able to grow like we have without her! Former secretary Laurie Paul is stepping in as interim director as we enter Trip Guide season. Many of you know her from her attendance at events across the state. We’re happy to have her support!

Over the years, Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona (right off of Route 66) has named several hundred asteroids over the years as they have been discovered. This year, they felt it was appropriate to honor the man that is most responsible for creating the Mother Road by naming one after him.

The City of Tulsa held a ceremony on August 31st to mark the occasion, which would’ve been Avery’s 155th birthday. The event also included a talk from Annette Murray, author of a new children’s book about Cyrus Avery, and Michael Wallis, who had a book signing for his new Centennial edition of Route 66: The Mother Road. Kevin Schindler from the Lowell Observatory was onhand and spoke to the crowd about the many space connections that exist along Route 66, including two space museums in Oklahoma. He also explained the asteroid naming process. Tulsa City Councilor Anthony Archie, whose district is one of five in the city that carry part of Route 66, presented a proclamation on behalf of the city. A copy of the proclamation will be going to the Avery family.

The repaved section of Ribbon Road in Ottawa County.
The six year battle to keep Ottawa County from removing a significant portion of Ribbon Road and replacing it with modern pavement is over. In June, the project that replaced two miles of the historic pavement was completed. The Oklahoma Route 66 Association advocated strongly to save the Ribbon Road and, instead, patch the existing pavement and only add new concrete and asphalt where the original materials were completely missing. Although we received regional media attention for our efforts and we were successful in keeping one of the three miles out of the work plan, the loss of the other two miles is still heartbreaking for those of us in the preservation community.

The finished roadway does not quite match the final version of the proposal, as gravel is still a significant part of the roadbed. The middle lane is now marked with modern yellow striping and signage says that the lane is for turning traffic only. The concrete curbs on either side of the asphalt are completely gone and large Route 66 shields have been added to the new blacktop. The one mile of Ribbon Road that was successfully excluded from the project is in much worse shape than it was before the project; apparently, much of the heavy machinery used the original lane and further damaged it. Additionally, several sections were entirely removed for new culvert installation. The Oklahoma Route 66 Association continues to look for resources and expertise to patch and preserve the remaining original lane outside of Miami. WWW.OKLAHOMAROUTE66.COM

Although the boot was originally planned for installation near NW 25th Street and Classen, neighborhood concerns encouraged city leaders to look for another location. When the Cowboy Museum expressed interest, it was a perfect fit. “Oklahoma City is proud to be the home of over 50 miles of Route 66, and we’re also proud of our place in the iconic song,” Mayor David Holt said in a press release. “We thought it was time for this pride to be on display, and thus, ‘Kicks 66’ was born. We believe this unique piece will take its place among other must-see Route 66 landmarks, and it has found its perfect home at The Cowboy.” The giant boot joins several other giant roadside attractions that have come to Route 66 in recent months, such as the Wellston pushpin, the Bridgeport Pony Bridge compass, and Miami’s Froella the Elephant. A 66-ft tall dinosaur is still pending in Tulsa, which already has the Land of the Giants thanks to their garden of Muffler Men statues near 11th and Peoria. The boot lights up at night and is open to visitors from 8am to 10pm every day.

In June, “Kicks 66” was installed at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. This 35 foot tall sculpture was created by Cameron Eagle in honor of the road’s Centennial. Eagle grew up going to the 66 Bowl in town and has created a number of signs, including for the Town of Luther and the Heartland Heritage of America Museum in Weatherford.
