OCCF welcomes new trustee, Rick Johnson

n July 1, 2022, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation Board of Trustees will welcome Rick Johnson, trustee and manager of the Malzahn Family Limited Partnership and former CEO of Charles Machine Works.

Although Johnson is new to the board, he has worked with the Community Foundation for years as the primary contact for the Malzahn Family Affiliated Fund. Johnson will succeed Mark Funke, whose term ends June 30, 2022.

Since December, the Community Foundation has awarded 10 OKCGetsFit grants totaling $188,200 to innovative programs and projects.

In addition to promoting health and wellness, all grantees must utilize KeepMovingOKC.org as part of their grant, whether that means creating events for KeepMovingOKC’s online calendar or discovering parks and trails on the site.

GROWTH IN 2022

n 2019, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation celebrated its 50th Anniversary. To commemorate this occasion, the Community Foundation decided to plant nearly 800 trees along the Oklahoma River.

The 3-mile stretch on the north side of the river between Portland and Western Avenue was what the Community Foundation’s Parks and Public Space Director, Brian Dougherty, referred to as “no man’s land.” The south side of the river already had plenty of trees, so Foundation President Nancy Anthony decided that the Community Foundation should create a beautification impact along the river’s north side.

A good deal of strategy and planning went into the project, and the Community Foundation worked with utility companies to make sure the trees’ growth would not affect gas or power lines. The entire project was one of the Community Foundation’s most ambitious projects, and it took nearly 6 months to complete.

Today, the trees are thriving, and the river trail is becoming more and more popular. What was once deemed as “no man’s land” is now enjoyed by bikers, runners, joggers and families from all over the metro.

OCCF Supports Oklahoma’s Unique Culture with a New Grant Program

C

ultural experiences have the power to bring members of a community together around interests that connect them. Oklahoma’s cultural heritage encompasses a broad array of traditions, arts, values, social practices and historical and intellectual achievements that are unique to our community.

To be eligible, programs, projects and activities must take place within Oklahoma, Canadian, Cleveland and Logan Counties and recipients must have a GiveSmartOKC profile.

To assist and promote our unique culture, OCCF has established a new Culture & Community iFund grant. It supports programs, projects and activities that promote, preserve and utilize Oklahoma’s “cultural fabric” to inspire community participation and cohesion.
