IF

If you’re a cannabis patient, business owner, or even an employee or advocate, and you’ve shared something cannabisrelated on your Facebook page, chances are you're familiar with the dreaded ‘Facebook jail’. In some cases, it’s a simple 24-48-hour ban, which is infuriating, but temporary. In other situations, business and personal pages are completely removed, or even permanently banned from the social media website, while others seem to be left intact and unscathed. Whatever your experience with the anti-cannabis side of Facebook has been, it’s more than likely caused quite a bit of frustration, and potentially impacted business, at the very least. What’s worse, this wave of censoring doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down; if anything, it’s building momentum, with some people nearly constantly facing down bans and time in Facebook jail. Part of what makes it so frustrating is that in many cases, you’d be hard pressed to find a legitimate reason for the ban or post deletion. While there are always those who break the rules and spoil it for others, a vast majority of business pages are following both state law and Facebook guidelines; not offering anything for sale, and often not listing any pricing information. Personal pages for patients and advocates alike have also often seen bans,

OKLAHOMA CHRONIC

simply for openly posting and speaking about their use and belief in cannabis and in some incidences, bans even when their posts are not related to cannabis at all. In many cases, unfortunately, it could be that a competitor or opponent of medical cannabis simply reported a post or page multiple times, just to see it removed. It’s petty, and childish, and yet, it is reality, sadly. Even within the tight-knit cannabis community, there can be those who loathe to see the success of others, and those rotten apples are certainly contributing to the problem, but the barrel that is Facebook may have more than a few rotten planks itself.Even though cannabis related social media accounts, both business and personalbased, have been walking on eggshells, trying to avoid Facebook’s banhammer, major pharmaceutical companies like Johnson & Johnson, Bayer, even Pfizer all have active pages with thousands of followers each. While their posts may not directly advertise or promote their pharmaceutical products, many of them advertise through Facebook, meaning the ads on news feeds can be related to prescription medications, meaning these companies have an upper-hand, and are able to reach patients in a way that cannabis businesses are unable to. These companies promote themselves as medical companies,

working to improve the lives of their patients and customers. Meanwhile, medical cannabis companies face far, far more scrutiny, simply for offering patients an alternative, without offering any kind of sales information within their posts. Many pharmaceuticals, even something as simple as Tylenol, can kill someone, yet medical cannabis, which has killed no one, is far too risky to allow business pages related to it to thrive and share information for others on Facebook. The lack of logic is staggering when you really look at it, but it also sheds an important light on where the website’s loyalty really lies. While the cannabis stigma is fading, it’s painfully obvious that when it comes to Facebook and many other social media platforms, the subject is still quite taboo. Even head shops selling decor items that are mildly related to cannabis and the culture surrounding it, have struggled with keeping their posts up and pages open. One could make the argument that cannabis is not federally legal yet, and that Facebook is simply trying to keep themselves out of hot water, but this does not seem to be the case, simply because of the major lack of consistency. Some business pages are left perfectly alone, while other pages, who follow the guidelines of Facebook just like those left alone, are constantly temporarily banned, or see their posts removed as offensive or against the standards of Facebook. Some growers are able to post photos of their plants, while others see their pages shut down for far less. Or another example being if an unwitting visitor to the page leaves a comment that happens to include a word that social media’s algorithm decides to flag as suspicious (everyone knows not to say sale by now, right?), even when the intent is not there to violate terms. A few dispensaries can share photos of their product and stock,

OKLAHOMA CHRONIC

| 08

while others have their posts deleted and their page locked for a day or two. What’s more, it seems to be focused on Oklahoma and our medical industry; pages from companies in states where it has been recreationally legalized do not seem to have this issue. This lack of consistency shows that it’s not only the jealous, rotten few who are trying to purposely cause issues for others on Facebook, but it’s also the Facebook moderators themselves who arbitrarily decide who gets banned and who gets a pass, and apparently, most of our medical industry here in Oklahoma does not. Ask just about any dispensary, grow, or even grow supply store with a Facebook page, and they’ll probably have a lot to say about how they feel about being censored when their business is legal. It’s frustrating, it hurts business, and most of all, it hurts patients, whether Facebook would like to admit it or not. One of the best things to come from having a legal medical industry is that we have access to so much more information and knowledge about cannabis than ever before. We are able to learn and share our knowledge, but only when that information isn’t nipped in the bud simply because a moderator doesn’t agree with it, or an opponent doesn’t report it continuously, just to get it taken down. Knowledge is power, and when a website or company goes to such lengths to inhibit the exchange of information, it should make one pause and think. For recreational states to be left alone, and medical programs to face more scrutiny speaks volumes about Facebook, but it also speaks volumes to the impact the medical side of cannabis is having, for it to be such a threat to someone that those pages and/or posts need to be removed simply for sharing information on cannabis or cannabis businesses, is ridiculous in my opinion.

Seven dispensaries here in Oklahoma filed a lawsuit against Facebook and Mark Zuckerburg himself in the later part of this past summer, along with other members of Facebook’s executive team, claiming damages due to the loss of business and customer outreach resulting from pages being temporarily blocked or permanently unpublished. If Facebook continues to ban medical cannabisfocused pages, it is likely that, while among the first to do so in the world, they certainly won’t be the last here in Oklahoma. In an effort to combat the wave of cannabis focused censorship, patients, advocates, and business owners alike are creating back-up pages that they can continue to reach other patients in the event that their page is removed or temporarily banned. Others have decided to leave the website entirely, moving to other social media platforms that are more cannabis friendly. Some choose to double-down, taking care to post a plant or something cannabis-related every day in order to stand their ground. Whatever the strategy chosen,Oklahoman's are taking a stand, even if it is in a small way, and despite the constant censorship facing the industry, they’re determined to continue sharing information and stories about the benefits of cannabis. Those stories give people hope, they help change minds and break stigmas in a state where many believed that it would never, ever be legalized, even for medical use. Those types of stories are going to continue to drive the medical cannabis movement forward.

There is no doubt that Facebook, and social media in general, can be a great asset. It helps people stay connected, learn new things, and network with people within their industry. It has brought strangers together and made some truly incredible and beautiful things happen all around the world. For the Oklahoma medical cannabis community, however, it can be a virtual minefield, where the wrong thing posted or shared on your personal or cannabis business page can see get it temporarily or permanently banned, even if the post was following the guidelines. The country is slowly, but surely, wiping away prohibition. More than ever, people are finally stepping out of the cannabis closet and becoming more open with their use. The times, they are a-changing, and it is about time for Facebook to catch up with the rest of the country and allow these legal businesses to share information and posts with their followers, just like any other business, because they are, in the best way, just another business. In many ways, the fact that these businesses, advocates, and patients continue to post on Facebook (whether they get their page released or create a whole new one), despite the potential backlash and censoring that they face, reflects the mindset that has fueled the medical movement from the first day of working towards legalization: in spite of the opposition, the censorship, and even outright harassment, we persist.

COMMUNING FROM THE CUP

OKLAHOMANS EAGER TO COME TOGETHER IN HONOR OF CANNABIS By Carisa Rowe It was hot, water was scarce, the terrain was less than ideal, and you couldn’t even get food in half the venue but the High Times Cannabis Cup was anything but miserable. Standing in a field of fellow Oklahomans, in the broad daylight, using the medicine that we know heals us without fear of repercussion was…exhilarating. It’s true that there were a lot of problems at the first High Times Cannabis Cup, which was hosted by the Lost Lakes Entertainment Center in Oklahoma City but that really isn’t the story behind this historical event. The story at the Cannabis Cup was about community. Walking the vendor area carried the same excitement walking the midway of the fair as a child. The colors, sounds, and smells were intoxicating.

People watching was no disappointment either. Event attendees converged on Lost Lakes from every corner of Oklahoma and blended together perfectly. Every type of cannabis enthusiast was present. Ticket holders and patients included curious seniors, exuberant college students, soccer moms, B-boys, and no shortage of folks “in the industry”. There was even a grassy knoll under some deeply appreciated trees where one could chat and medicate with fellow Oklahomans who were all enthusiastically absorbing the reality of where we all were: we were in public, on the east side of Oklahoma City casually medicating in broad daylight with zero concerns.

My Cannabis Cup journey started with a High Times-worthy bang. The very first stop I made with Dusty, our photographer, offered a dab for verified patients with the host featuring concentrates from entrants in the cup. I chose an unmarked container with a large, clear diamond in clear terp sauce. I’ll never know which entrant’s product I tried but it hit smooth and strong. After exhaling, I had to stand up, stretch, take a big breath of fresh air, and realign myself with gravity. Astonished that I’d just openly taken a dab of cannabis concentrate, in public, in Oklahoma, in broad daylight, I encouraged Dusty to make the trek across the venue to check out the vendor arena.

Little did we know that the trek was less than ideal. That’s not fair, it wasn’t just less than ideal. The trek from the stage around the “lake” to the vendor arena was pretty awful and early in the day on Saturday, Lost Lakes didn’t have anything figured out. There were no consistent shuttles running to transport festival attendees the considerable distance between attractions. Being that Oklahoma is a medical state, ticket holders should have been able to expect appropriate accommodations. As a patient, I have to admit that the walk and lack of seating throughout the venue was very problematic and was surely a contributing factor for patients experiencing exertion and heat exhaustion.

OKLAHOMACHRONIC

A local edibles company, Greens Bakery, was driving their adorable busses up and down the rutted road to shuttle people between the stage and vendor arena. Dusty and I walked into the vendor area and were both taken aback. To our left somewhere, a DJ was cranking out party music and ahead of us was the most unpredictable thing anyone in Oklahoma could have imagined: a giant stoner party in broad daylight. Even after taking a dab only a few minutes earlier, the scene was surreal, and probably even more so thanks to the efficacy of the diamond dab. The DJ was working hard to hype the crowd and spread the word about what vendors were offering or featuring. Dusty and I stopped and visited with Ford Austin of APCO, who was waiting on Marc Wasserman to wrap up an interview. If you aren’t familiar with Wasserman, check out the Pot Brothers at Law and their informative, funny videos on YouTube and Instagram. The first half of our adventure was sort of a recon mission. Not knowing what to expect or where to start, we cut to the right and began meandering through booths hosted by processors, growers, dispensaries, and various other retailers keen to make an impression at this inaugural event. Many dispensaries offered samples, some medicated and some not. As a patient, I was thrilled to try new things like “terpene water”, which, by the looks of it, was just water with fruit and/or vegetables floating in it but it was welcomed eagerly because there weren’t any trucks or tents selling drinks on the vendor side of the event. Vendors displayed cured flower, prerolls, all manner of devices used for medicating as well as multitudes of edibles. No sales were permitted of THCcontaining products on site but some vendors offered raffles or spinning prize wheels that promised prizes ranging from simple grinders to full ounces of cannabis. The vendor area felt very much like a midway designed for cannabis enthusiasts. I lost Dusty somewhere along the adventure and spent the next couple hours immersed in the chaos of my first Cannabis Cup experience. I spoke with the folks at Terpenetics who boast the ability to harvest terpenes from cannabis plants without damaging the cannabinoids. This provides extraction companies the opportunity to reintroduce natural terpenes to many concentrated THC products. Since most of the methods to collect THC concentrates destroy the terpene profile in the process, Terpenetics offers a valuable service to producers interested in maintaining terpene integrity.

I chatted with several growers, many of which were entrants into the cup. I tried to determine if there was a tried and true method that each of the growers were using that brought them to the Cup. It quickly became apparent that there are a dozen ways to grow weed and any method can produce Cup-worthy medicine. The resonating sentiment from growers was to be sure to use good, clean water. After that, it’s anybody’s game. By the time I found the grassy knoll, I’d been meandering the aisles of the vendor arena for a few hours. I was stiff and sore and very hot – as were many other attendees. I copped a squat near Eric Shoemaker of Addy’s Flowers, a personal friend, and asked how things were going. Before he could answer, someone standing nearby passed a preroll and gave us a thumb’s up. We got busy catching up and joined other small groups of people in and out of their conversations. Everyone was eager to share and try different meds and to chat about the passion that brought us all together on a blistering day in August. When Eric finally came back around to answer how things were going, his words reflected the sentiments from every person around us, “Man, things are great!”

“When you smoke the herb, it reveals you to yourself.” - Bob Marley

Refreshed from lounging on the grassy knoll and eager to find my photographer, Dusty, I stretched, took in a deep breath full of cannabis-scented air, and slathered on some SPF 50 sunblock before venturing back into the scorching rays of the daystar. The heat was tolerable thanks to a cooling towel from Mary Mechanix, earned by participating in their very clever social media campaign. Most vendors were offering bottles of water to parched shoppers and one booth sold these incredible designed exclusively to combat cotton mouth; both were greatly appreciated. If you want to check out the mints, look for Flintts Mouthwatering Mints. I cannot rave about these things enough! On my journey to reunite with Dusty, I stumbled across a man dressed to look like Matthew McConaughey’s character David Wooderson. When he asked if I had a joint, I replied in Dazed and Confused homage, “no, not on me, man.” With that answer, his face lit up as he gifted me with a preroll and the blessing “it’d be a lot cooler if you did” before he moseyed off into the crowd.

Still unable to find my photog, I found my way into the DJ booth for a bird’s eye view of the vendor arena. From my perch, I watched Oklahomans collide in the most ridiculous harmony. It was sitting up there, six hours into the day, when I realized I hadn’t observed any law enforcement. Other than monitoring the gates, I hadn’t seen security much either. It dawned on me what the key difference was in this setting versus every other large event I have attended. The festivities were completely cannabis-centric and even though there were vendors offering alcoholic drinks, the focus was really on the medicine and the culture of cannabis. People were shuffling through the festivities at a dozen different paces with dozens of intentions about how they each wanted to experience this unbelievable event. In search of Dusty, I wandered into the Rosin Tech tent and met West Coast Vinnie who was laid back and enjoying his massive tent in the Oklahoma heat. We chatted a while about the different extraction options patients might be interested in checking out. This led me to inquire about the difference between “live resin” and “live rosin”. For the layperson, live resin is extracted using a solvent such as BHO from live or frozen cannabis plants. Live rosin is extracted from bubble hash collected from fresh, frozen cannabis without the use of solvents. This method preserves the natural terpene profile of the plant. After bidding West Coast Vinnie adieu, I meandered back into the scorching heat and finally stumbled into Dusty, who was quite sunburned but not even remotely bothered by it. He had been on quite the journey himself and was energetically sharing his own encounters when I realized I’d left my cell charger in one of the tents we’d visited earlier in the day. The two biggest hazards of all of my jobs in this industry are forgetfulness and always being on the go. Dusty and I agreed to catch back up before the end of the day and I took off in search of my beloved lightning charger. Along the way, I visited several booths circulating prerolls to patients, checked out the promo swag being offered everywhere, and rode the vibes of the crowd – which was energetic and excited. As evening drew, I decided to head back to the stage side of the venue to see if I could catch 311 performing. On the way out of the vendor arena, I came across Lotus Gold and White Mousse amping up a crowd of patients surrounding a billowing cloud of skunky smoke.

OKLAHOMACHRONIC What I’d stumbled on took a few seconds to register and come together as a complete scene. I’d walked up on a modified, Lotus Gold-branded leaf blower with huge downstem bowls attached behind the intake fan. This outlandish rig was pumping billows of cannabis smoke into an animated crowd of consumers hopeful to enjoy all that the High Times Cannabis Cup could possibly offer. Near the stage that first evening, we heard whispers of dissatisfaction. Food trucks had not been adequately prepared and water was hard to come by. Heat, dehydration, and overexertion had taken their toll on lots of attendees, some of whom sought medical attention as a result. 311 put on a great show and concert watchers chilled out under several large shade trees at the back of the audience while more energetic fans gathered at the stage. The atmosphere was relaxed and happy. The easiness with which everyone came together in that moment was beautiful and made the perfect end scene for a monumental day. I honestly thought that the 8 p.m. curtain call was a poor decision until eight o’clock came and the day’s miles in the sun knocked me flat off my feet. All I could muster the energy for was an exceptional blunt rolled with some beautiful buds gifted to me by one of the vendors. The next morning was met with more-than-average achiness and stiffness but I quickly medicated with a few puffs of Jet Fuel that I’d brought along with me. I made the mistake of skipping the first hour or so of the second day because I figured not much would be happening. Hitting up the back gates was also a mistake because the party had moved over to the stage. Fortunately the venue had arranged for regular shuttles to run between the two spots. By the time I got over there, I’d already missed Dusty going on stage with the Ying Yang Twins in a surprise performance thrown on by the White Mousse crew. Come to find out, White Mousse owner Rocky Atencio and his son worked between the High Times crew and the Ying Yang Twins representatives to pull of the stunt. I wish I hadn’t missed the shenanigans but this is why they say, “you snooze, you lose.” I picked up a vegetarian taco and some loaded fries and went in search of a place to chow down. I am glad I grabbed the shady little spot I grabbed because it landed me right in the company of the Hemp Father preparing to commune before taking the stage an. I volunteered to break up since I can’t roll (don’t judge) and before I could get started, some of the fellas from DabStars showed up to roll t-shirts they would later launch into the crowd. Hemp Father had just arrived a few hours earlier from Las Vegas and the DabStars guys had red-eyed from Alaska, as far as I could tell but everyone was energetic and stoked to be there.

OKLAHOMA CHRONIC

| 17

The shady spot was a great place to visit with friends and get a little peek at what happens behind the scenes to pull something like Cannabis Cup together. Activity began to pick up as we finished medicating so I made my way down to the stage. As hosts got the ball rolling, attendees started pouring in. High Times emcees were launching swag into the crowd. Several spectators caught silicone bongs and pipes as well as merch like shirts and caps. As the excitement built, the crowd pushed closer which provided to opportunity for Cup-goers to come together. Several pods of people were visibly medicating without concern which highlighted the tone of the overall crowd: relaxed and buzzing.

Some of the shenanigans at the High Times Cannabis Cup were indicative of a consequences-be-damned attitude and were not respectful of the spirit of a medical cannabis community, which is to medicate responsibly and respectfully. To that I argue, everyone was. No one was engaging in risky behavior and if you weren’t interested in partaking, there was no pressure to do so.

The Cannabis Cup worked toward the greater good of forging a new relationships in a community of people who previously had to worry about coming out of the weed closet. Smoking circles and experimenting with new ways to experience cannabis have always been the building blocks of a cannabis Watching winners accept awards for community. Groups of brilliant stoners getting producing the best cannabis products in together to toke up is exactly how activists Oklahoma was by far the most unexpected build organizations, how patients rally thing I could have imagined when the together, and how million-dollar organizations cannabis community was urging Oklahomans are born. The High Times Cannabis Cup to pass State Question 788. I was confident brought together thousands of Oklahomans we would pass the initiative and I had some eager to commune in honor of cannabis and concept of what the months following that is exactly what we did. legalization would look like. What I didn’t fully grasp was how deeply entrenched cannabis culture already was in the state. When a cannabis cup started building interest online, I expected an expo-style event or another convention. I didn’t expect an all-out celebration in the name of cannabis. The best part was observing how ready Oklahoma was for such an event. Winners climbed the stage to accept their awards with a range of emotions playing across their faces. From small presences like the grower from Full Moon Pharms taking the stage with only one person at his side to crews from CBD Plus, Helix, and White Mousse, the exhilaration was radiating off the stage in waves of shock, pride, and jubilance. During the melee, I was able to squeeze in a quick conversation with Dabbing Granny of Instagram fame about good vibes and seeking adventure right before being rolled up in a Tyler Dodd tumbleweed as he moshed his way to the stage to accept Best Hybrid Flower with Emerald Wholesale. As the excitement of the winners procession wound down and attendees settled in for Slightly Stoopid to perform, Oklahomans split into little pods amongst each other to partake in a celebratory medicating session and to await a performance by Slightly Stoopid. Everywhere I looked throughout the weekend, I saw what I know to be true around here: even when conditions aren’t ideal, Oklahomans come together. We unite to rescue our communities from natural disasters. We assemble in front of lawmakers to take back our rights to natural medicine. We pitch in to help our fellow Oklahomans launch their businesses to the next level. We celebrate hard work in big style despite the hurdles.

"Let us burn one from end to end, and pass it over to me my friend."

HYDROPNIC CANNABIS GROWING A CRASH COURSE

BY VERONICA CASTILLO Hydroponic growing is a form of growing plants using oxygen, a water-based system, and nutrient filled solution. This method of growing doesn’t use soil; it requires the plant to have direct access to the nutrient filled solution. Any water not consumed by the root (remember- this is water-based system) is recycled through the system for consumption at a later time. This isn’t necessarily new practice; however, maybe a little newer when tied to the cannabis industry. Hydroponics was a method of gardening/farming back in the 10th and 11th centuries by Aztecs, and goes back even further in time. Types of Hydroponic Systems There are many types of hydroponic systems; here are a few: Aeroponics- this method means that roots are suspended in the air. Plants consume their nutrients by way of mist to roots or using a pond fogger. · Aquaponics-a system that uses conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as fish) combined with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic type environment. · Wicking/ Wick System- this a low-cost hydroponic method. Plants consume their nutrients by way of material (rope), a growing medium (clay/cotton/fiber), and one end of the wick material being placed inside of the nutrient filled solution. · Drip System- this is an easy method, using a slow feed concept for the growing medium and nutrient filled solution. · Deepwater Culture- this is known as the easiest method. Using this method means that the plant roots are suspended in the solution. A pump is used for oxygen to keep that plant from drowning. · Nutrient Film Technique- Also known as NFT, this system uses a continuous flow of nutrient filled solution running over the roots. Using this method means that the plants are at a slight tilt so that solution flows with gravity. One big difference between soil grown and hydroponic grown cannabis is that: hydroponics do not allow the same terpene development as cannabis grown in soil. While one could boost terpenes in hydroponic grows, soil makes for the best growing medium because it is native to the cannabis plant. The overall flower taste (which is subjective, of course), is different between hydroponics and soil due to different terpene development. Careful and constant attention to plants is needed more with hydroponics than is needed with soil grown cannabis. Growing Cannabis Using Hydroponics Considerations: The first consideration should be your space as well as the resources available to you to start up. This is crucial to selecting the best hydroponic system for your grow operation. Other considerations to select the best system/method: What do the startup funds look like? Will you be growing long- term or temporary? How much time can be committed daily? Are power outages an issue in the area? These considerations will help determine if a traditional soil-based system is best or if a hydroponic system is best and also- the type of hydroponic system (aeroponics, deep water, drip, etc.)

OKLAHOMACHRONIC Supplies/Materials Needed to Start Hydroponic Cannabis Growth Supplies and materials will vary dependent on which hydroponic system chosen. However, listed below are a few things that will be needed no matter the system: Because soil isn’t required, due to the plants only using the nutrients in the soil, making sure that the plants have the elements from the soil is important: potassium, phosphorous, nitrogen, sulfur, magnesium, calcium, copper, zinc, boron, molybdenum, manganese, chlorine, and iron. Buying a nutrient mix that is sold especially for 'hydroponic' use, usually has everything needed. It is important to have a Parts Per Million (PPM) meter to keep track of the elements/nutrients in the solution. Required levels will vary during the plant’s growth stages. Like humans, too much or too little will negatively impact plant health and growth. In addition to the PPM meter, hydroponic growth also requires a PPM-EC meter and a PPM-TDS meter. A PPM-EC meter measures the electricity in the water, important for measuring the electrical conductivity of the water. A PPM-TDS meter measures the amount of plant food in the water. A nutrient cycle is a necessary tool help feed the plant’s on schedule. The timer works by starting the pump which places the root of plants into the nutrient filled solution on schedule. Marijuana lighting is important because light for plant growth and health is important. No matter the strain, all plants require night and day cycles for growth. The best option for the plants is full spectrum LED lights. These lights enable the grower to grow from seed to flower while using half the amount of electricity than other lighting systems. Full spectrum LED lights also do not generate heat.

“Why is marijuana against the law. It grows naturally upon our planet. Doesn’t the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit … unnatural” BILL HICKS Grow Room Conditions The grow room for hydroponic growth should have a temperature of about 70-83 degrees, ventilation, and airflow. It is important for plants to have ventilation because plants need both CO2 and light for photosynthesis. Vents- exit and intake, produce CO2 rich air into the grow room and fans are necessary to prevent mold and too much moisture. Advantages of Hydroponic Cannabis Growth Hydroponic cannabis growth is said to be one of the best options for cannabis quality. Growing without soil is said to be better for the environment (less water used, the water that is used- is used efficiently, and is reusable). Hydroponics is known to produce high quality cannabis without the need for outdoor conditions. Due in part to the plants being grown in a sterile environment, there is less risk for unwanted bugs, or other animals that can easily access the grow. Hydroponic grown cannabis is known to be the better option for medicinal marijuana users, one reason being there is less risk of pest infestation and disease from less pesticides being used. Hydroponic growth can produce higher yields, some farmers have reported six harvests per year with this method. There is more growing control with hydroponic systems than there is with outdoor grow. This system allows farmers to monitor the plant’s more closely. This creates better quality cannabis. Hydroponic cannabis cultivation is great for limited space. These systems can be set up in a small room and have many different set-up options due to the ability to be built according to the grow space. There is also less need for re-potting, which saves on space as well as money.

HYDROPONICS Continued by Veronica Castillo

Hydroponic Red Flags to Look out For:

This is a water system, with that said, one plant can catch a disease, which could mean that the full crop is at risk. Bacteria can grow in water so because of that, keeping a close eye again- is needed. Fungi is food for crops, and water is fungi’s friend. It is important to check on the plants regularly- emphasizing more on time and proper cycles. Electricity and power outages; both go hand in hand with this type of grow. Many farmers that grow using hydroponics have generators which make a great source. However, because hydroponics relies heavily on electricity, having an “in case of emergency” plan is important if something were to go wrong due to such high risk for electrocution. (Being that hydroponics does use the mix of water and electricity).

Hydroponics FAQ:

A few common questions and answers about hydroponic growing: (from www.hydroponics.net)

How often should I change my nutrient solution? There really isn't a rule to determine how often solution should be changed. A general rule of thumb is to top your reservoir off with fresh water without any nutrient added. Try and keep a record of how much water is being added to the reservoir and once the amount of water added equals half of the reservoir capacity, it’s time to change the solution and rinse the reservoir and growing medium. What is the temperature range for the nutrient solution? The optimal temperature of the nutrient solution should be in the range of 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. How can I tell if my seeds are viable? Fill a shot glass with distilled water and place your seeds in it. After 24 hours, the viable seeds should have sunk to the bottom. Those still floating are most likely not viable and will not germinate. Can I transfer plants from soil to hydroponics? This can be done by washing the roots of the plant (dipping in water and trying to remove as much of the soil matter as possible). Doing this carefully is important due to the delicate roots and transplant shock. When the roots are somewhat clean, go ahead and pot the plant in the hydroponic media and begin a standard watering regimen (using a touch of B-1 in the solution for a week or so to aid in the recovery from transplanting). Time to Grow! While hydroponics does require more time and attention than soil growth, cannabis plants will thrive efficiently. Hydroponics is the most environmentally loved, small space friendly, multiple harvests per year- method of growing. It has been a method of gardening and farming since the beginning of time and continues to gain popularity.

OKLAHOMACHRONIC Speaking of boozy, many a party-goer has fallen prey to the post-Halloween hangover, where too many orange jello shots and of course the Dracula-themed Bloody Mary’s met way too much sugar. It can be a potent and nauseating combination when the time comes to pay the piper the next morning, leaving you glued to your bed, the bathroom floor, or the couch. Ideally, one could consider hydrating the night before, to help stave off some of that unpleasantness. None the less, gentle hydration after the fact, especially with electrolytes, combined with a small dose of cannabis can do wonders for how you feel post-halloween party, especially where that pounding headache is concerned. One will still need to really hydrate, as well as eat something healthy and balanced, but cannabis could be a more gentle pain reliever than something such as Tylenol, which could simply bring that nausea right back. However, if smoking or vaping causes uneasiness to the stomach when hungover, consider small pieces of low-dose edibles, nothing too sweet or too salty, or even a tincture under the tongue, if handy. For those who are less than enthused about this time of year, cannabis can also be of help. Despite the widespread love for the holiday, the truth is, not everyone is into Halloween, and not everyone is into being scared half to death for fun. If you are someone who struggles with anxiety this time of year, for whatever the reason, cannabis could be key to helping you relax and feel more at ease, especially if you’re anxious around crowds. Trick-or-treating with your children in some cities is akin to going to Disney World in the peak of summer, and crowds can really bring out a lot of unwanted stress and anxiety. Others dread the haunted houses with friends, or even just the scary movies they know their friends and loved ones will inevitably watch. Small doses of cannabis can help take away the uneasiness associated with anxiety without being overwhelming to the point that your anxiety and paranoia are compounded by the costumes or decor around you. Deciding on the right strain and dose can be difficult, but your local budtender can help direct you towards what could be the best fit for your medical needs. Whatever your cannabis-related plans are this Halloween, always remember to be safe. If you are going to a party, ensure you have your medical card with you in case you decide to take any type of cannabis medicine with you. For those college-aged patients, keep in mind that it’s still prohibited on most campuses. It’s extremely common for police departments to set up DUI checkpoints, and they are not only checking for those who have been drinking; so always ensure you have a safe way home. Most importantly, have fun! There is still a lot of work to be done for cannabis patients across the state, but for now, let’s pull out our pumpkins, dust off our brooms, and turn on Monster Mash: it’s Halloween for goodness sake! MONTHLY CANNABIS REVIEW CHECK OUT OUR MONTHLY REVIEW OF THE "GELATO CAKE" FLOWER STRAIN by Melissa Hall

Truly fine cannabis does not simply elicit a reaction, it creates a feeling and becomes an experience. Amidst the abundant selection that is the Oklahoma cannabis market, on the top shelves and back counters, in the Mom and Pop shops and holes in the walls, If you are lucky you will find the premiums, the private reserves, the select few that deserve to be called exquisite cannabis. After Coming across an exceptional grow of the Indica leaning hybrid Gelato Cake, (aka Gelato #33 x Wedding Cake) I decided to take a more in depth look at the strain. Descending from royalty such as Sunset Sherbet, Gelato Cake shows up to take its rightful place in line to heir the GSC (Girl Scout Cookies) throne. Gelato Cake Sets itself apart with a dank presence reminiscent of its OG Kush and Durbin Poison ancestry, mixed with a smooth and creamy sweetness that would make its predecessors Cherry Pie and Thin Mint GSC, proud. This Cookie family legacy is quite the looker, upon first glance you notice crowded trichomes clinging to the dense buds giving it a sugary crystalline resin coat. The iced flower flashes quite an impressive spectrum of fiery orange hairs, hints of violet and mauve hues that accent the forest and olive-green beauty, complementing its glassy and glazed finish, making its aesthetics as pleasing as its aroma. Showy and stunning, Gelato Cake takes its bag appeal to a superior level. This frosty bombshell assures to steal the thunder and catch everyone's eye in any Cannabis line up. A fine, proper cure has kept the bud gelatinous to the touch and leaves anything it comes in contact with a sticky film that is unlike any other.

This Bakery fresh treat packs a potent punch in the aroma department. With hints of almond, berry, vanilla and cream cheese in every whiff that provides confectionery sweetness while its undertones of cheese and spice bring out the Afghan presence of the flower, leaving consumers with a gassy tang that lingers and satisfies. The unmistakable odor that Gelato Cake exhibits, a pungent, yet delicate fragrance, delivers that “ love at first smell” nostalgia, making it a certain new favorite among experienced and less experienced cannabis users alike. This spicy sweet aura this powerhouse strain exhibits, leads the way for the knockout taste Gelato Cake has come to be known for. Gelato Cake, aka Ice Cream Cake, wholeheartedly lives up to its delicious name and sugary alias in the flavor department. The rich, extravagant terpene profile steps up to highlight the sweet, creamy and extra smooth flavor while also giving a balance to the earthy, gassy almost faint diesel fumes. A true divine treat, Gelato Cake emits decadent notes of vanilla bean, berry, cream, cheese and even a sugary icing like richness, while featuring the dank, gassy underlying profile that gives this award winning hybrid a delectable and complex savor.

The effects of Gelato Cake are known to have a borderline sedating effect. This hybrid balances the Indica and Sativa properties with ease, while leaning towards the proverbial Indica couch lock, without keeping you stuck, so to speak. Cognitive effects make impact within seconds, leading to a powerful euphoric wave and mind numbing haziness. Its popularly potent aftermath gives way to extreme physical relaxation, especially in the muscles, making it a great strain for pain and muscle spasms. Your thoughts may linger in a dreamy buzz, possibly inspiring creativity. Other conditions that Gelato Cake is recommended to treat are nausea, fatigue, appetite loss, and insomnia. Although a newbie strain, Gelato Cake walks on the field with an old school attitude that could easily gain it a permanent place among your favorite go to strains. Immensely impressed with this merger of genetic highflyers, Gelato Cake is a CannaCritic MUST try! Until next time, remember, always medicate responsibly and stay Lit Oklahoma.

When learning about vaporizing cannabis concentrate, one might run into a lot of different names that can be associated with the same product. Normally being a smaller, more sleek device, (similar to that of an actual ink pen, hence the term “vape pen”), dab pens can be stashed and stored, making them easily accessible and portable. A few product lines have a built in disposable battery attached to their cannabis oil-filled cartridges. Disposable batteries make for an extremely convenient way

The pod system batteries are, most of the time as stash-able and convenient as a regular cart, and are available at dispensaries that sell the pre-filled pods. terpenoids and cannabinoids that have been produced by the plant’s trichome glands and can potentially produce therapeutic effects. Vape pens are a very quick and easy way to medicate because one may only need one or two small drags in order to receive the desired medicinal effect, which adds to the fact that vape pens are an easy and effective way to use cannabis. To get started, all you will need is a battery and your preferred cartridge. Dispensaries typically offer batteries that are compatible with the vape products they have available. Also, keep in mind that some batteries may require that the user charge them before the first use. However, once complete, just screw your cartridge onto your battery and take a drag. It’s as simple as that. Cannabis concentrates made for cartridges can be extracted in many different ways such as using ethanol or CO2 extraction methods. One of the most prevalent cannabis products on the market currently available is cannabis distillates

OKLAHOMACHRONIC When creating cannabis distillate, the dry herb is run through processing machines and broken down into a crude oil. That oil is then soaked in ethanol which “winterizes” the oil to remove the unwanted lipids from the finished product. The winterized material is then filtered and heated to burn off added alcohol and put into a distilling machine where the waste is removed leaving a safe to vape, concentrated THC distillate. Cannabis distillate and full spectrum cannabis distillate are made similarly but are finished differently dependent on the desired product. When it comes to cannabis, vaping and smoking are very similar in that both are heated before inhaled by use of patient. However, vaping can be a considerably healthier choice due to the plant material being heated to controlled specific heat where the medicinal compounds can be better released; otherwise known as vaporization. Whereas, when one lights up a joint or hits a pipe, tar and other carcinogens can be released into the lungs due in part to the overheating of the plant materials and other compounds. Unfortunately, with the production of some cannabis derived oils being so simple and convenient for the public, black market distributors are always finding ways to undercut consumers in order to gain a higher profit. Recently, the most prevalent and likely substance that has been used to do so and is subsequently causing illness and death in unsuspecting cannabis consumers, is a cutting mixture or diluent containing and sometimes comprised nearly entirely of vitamin e acetate,

VAPING KILLS? CONTINUED (also referred to as tocopherol acetate). Vitamin e acetate is used to closely mimic the viscosity of cannabis oils, and is being used as an additive in THC vape carts as well as E-cigarettes. This harmful cutting agent has been taken off of the market recently due to the outbreak of lung illnesses such as pulmonary injury (VAPI). According to the Center for Disease Control, more than 530 people (from 38 states and 1 U.S. territory), have reported some lung related illness due to vaping e-cigarette products containing THC. Many patients have reported using THC and nicotine, while others have reported the use of e-cigarette products containing only nicotine. Seven deaths have been confirmed in 6 states. “We do not yet know the specific cause of these lung injuries. The investigation has not identified any specific e-cigarette or vaping product (devices, liquids, refill pods, and/or cartridges) or substance that is linked to all cases”, says the CDC. Be cognizant as a consumer, to steer clear of any THC distillates that have not been tested because they can easily be manipulated and cut with vitamin E acetate, since they have not been regulated through testing. Big companies producing additives containing the diluent have reportedly gone dark and/or are refusing to comment on the issue. None the less; it is your right, as a consumer, to be able to demand testing results for any THC vape cartridge before purchasing. Furthermore, as a processor it is your responsibility to provide those results.
