Dear Alumni and Friends, Greetings from Oklahoma Christian University, where I like to embellish the truth a bit and say that every day is a picture-perfect 70 degrees with no wind. But as we enter the hot summer months that see Eagles plugging into internships, mission trips and more, there’s no need to embellish the truth of our students’ great success. Here are just a few of my recent favorite examples about cool things and cool people at OC. This year, a team of engineering and business students mentored by Entrepreneur in Residence Russ McGuire and Dr. Wayne Whaley created Impulse Drive, LLC. The startup’s business plan markets the practical nature of making small wind turbines—an important renewable energy resource— dramatically more efficient and productive. The project is so impressive that these students won the statewide Love’s Cup, just 12 months after another OC team won with VisuALS, an eye tracking solution that gives voice to the voiceless. Parker, OC’s first-ever Goldwater Scholar, also is doing groundbreaking research in wind energy. Two of our science students, Reid and Brandon, have developed a new and more accurate way to measure the bacteria in probiotics. OC genetics students are sequencing DNA in a national study. Our Medical Laboratory Science students are analyzing microscope images being sent from Honduras to assist Predisan in diagnosing difficult conditions and diseases. A group of students organized by Landon developed a smartphone app that helps with a variety of universal medical procedures. OC students also began a community garden on campus that provides fresh produce to local food banks. Professor Brad Buxton recently led a team of students to an international aeronautics competition. OC finished in the top 10. That’s impressive enough, but remember, OC doesn’t even have an aeronautical engineering degree (yet!). OC’s History Honor Society, led by Dr. John Maple, won its 22nd consecutive national Best Chapter Award. Yes, 22. OC’s student-run Eagle PR firm, led by Professor Josh Watson, received its first-ever award at the Oklahoma City Upper Case Awards. The only other school to win an award

in this contest is a comprehensive university with 12 times as many students and 25 times the annual budget! OC’s Ethics Teams, directed and coached by Dr. Jeff Simmons, competed in the state tournament against OU, OSU, and more. I’m proud to say that one of our two teams took second place … losing by just one point in the closest finals ever. The other OC team? It won the closest finals ever! Don Leftwich and Dr. Robert Nix took students to a statewide computer programming contest. One of OC’s teams finished second. Oh, and another OC team placed first, beating teams from a host of big research universities. Princeton Review named OC’s undergraduate Gaming and Animation program, under the leadership of Jeff Price, one of best in the country. OC beat out—wait for it—MIT. Faculty member David Jurney has worked with OC students to produce short films that have been selected more than 40 times for festivals both close to home and as far away as Spain. Dr. Philip Patterson co-wrote a book on media ethics that’s the most popular textbook of its kind in the world. The cool thing about this book is that in China, the most populated Communist nation on earth, it introduces biblical principles and ethics while giving full credit to the Bible. Bottom line … OC students, faculty, and alumni are making the world a better place. And speaking of making the world a better place, I want to close by bragging on Bob Lashley. In the last 44 years, he’s blessed the OC family in more ways than we can count. And as he rides off into the sunset (with his trusty guitar in tow), we can’t sing his praises enough. Read the tribute to Bob on page 16 and wish him well by emailing alumni@oc.edu. Whether you’re on campus for First Week Follies (Bob still plans to direct this special event!), Homecoming, or something else, I hope to see you and hear how God is using you to make a difference. Thank you for your prayers and support; they continue to help OC thrive. May God bless you and yours.

A LEGACY OF MISSION

ERIC AND LINDA KING HAVE BLESSED AND BEEN BLESSED BY CHURCH, MISSIONS AND FRIENDS Eric (70) and Linda (Baker 69) King are well known around the world as accomplished lawyers and for their support of Predisan Health Ministries in Honduras. Together, the couple has served nine years as president of the board of directors. However, not everyone is aware they

14 VI SI O NSPRING2 018

met studying English at OC. Eric’s story starts a little earlier when a student from then-David Lipscomb College knocked on his door during a mission trip to London. After studying the Bible and soon becoming a Christian, Eric wanted to come to America and study at a Christian college. Thanks in large part to the work of former president James O. Baird, Eric came to OC in 1965. “I’m grateful he took a risk on an unknown Englishman,” Eric said. Eric and Linda both studied under Bailey McBride (54), and they consider him and his late wife, Joyce, to be the strongest OC influences in their lives. “Bailey opened new worlds to both of us,” Linda said. “We learned so much about the quality of research and the close, careful reading of a text. He was a mentor in several respects. Joyce watched our children when we were in law school, and we traveled with them occasionally. Bailey was just so full of energy and ideas.” The Kings also mentioned the positive influences of Lynn McMillon (63) and James Cail (58). Cail once asked Eric to get a haircut, but Eric said he didn’t have a car or money. “James just told me he would pay for it and he would drive me,” Eric said. “Of course, I remember that he was a very good teacher, too.” Just a few years after graduating from OC, Eric and Linda enrolled in law school. They also joined others from OC to found Dayspring church of Christ; they continue to help lead it today. “Our decision to start Dayspring grew out of a group Bible study,” Linda said. “For 36 years, we’ve never had a paid staff. We are all volunteers, which demands, encourages and requires a huge amount of participation and personal growth.” Eric added the congregation has a unique emphasis on Sundays. “We decided early on that communion

would be the focus of our service and worship,” he said. “We have a table at the center of the room with chairs in a circle, and everyone comes to the table together.” Just 11 years after helping start Dayspring, the Kings took a group from the church to the jungle in Honduras. Predisan-cofounder Doris Clark invited them to help support the nonprofit ministry’s projects near Catacamas. “We took a group of teens and a few adults, and we worked in very primitive conditions,” Linda said. “Yet the people there were content, happy and positive. We came back with gratitude, and we were really transformed. We now take a group there every other summer.” The Kings and the groups they take help build houses and latrines, teach

Kings’ contributions when they retired as board members. “Linda and Eric never do anything half-way or half-heartedly,” she said. “They are always gracious, hospitable and thoughtful encouragers who give their best and bring out the best in others.” Similar to their relationship with Clark, the Kings have a number of lifelong friends, especially those from Oklahoma Christianw. “At OC, we met friends who became incredible, special friends we treasure to this day,” Eric said. “As a famous Harry Chapin song says, ‘Old friends mean so much more to me because they know where you have been.’ That’s how I feel about my friends from OC.” Linda agreed.

classes, work in orphanages, minister to the suffering, conduct puppet shows for children, and assist with medical care. Predisan has grown considerably since its founding, and its health centers now serve a population of 150,000 people in Honduras. Just a few years ago, Clark praised the

44 YEARS AND 88,000 GAGS LASHLEY, OC’S ENTERTAINER IN RESIDENCE, RETIRES

16 VI SI O NSPRING2 018

In the spring of 1974, a 22-year-old social work major walked across the graduation stage at Oklahoma Christian College. A musician, comic, educator, gifted connector, and student leader, Bob “Lash” Lashley could have chased any number of interesting career paths. And fortunately for all of us at OC, he did.

WE OWE MANY TRADEMARKS OF OC’S DNA TO OUR FRIEND LASH. Early in his OC career, Bob tore up the road in Admissions. Later, he ran the OC Callout and knocked on doors for Advancement. Building countless relationships with university donors, Bob raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for scholarships and student programs. The father of First Week Follies, he put his creative talents to work writing and directing 40 hilarious and technically ambitious employee variety shows. He put in long hours overseeing 12 Spring Sings and 22 Freshman Fanfares. He built OC’s parent orientation program, launched the Vienna Alumni Adventure, spearheaded OC Remembers, and led out in the creation of Golden Eagles, a program for OC retirees. He led in Events, Alumni Relations, parent programming, and he even served as OC’s golf coach. During all this, Bob and his wife Judi (Williams 76) managed to raise two Kingdom-driven kids, Andy (00) Lashley and Aubrie (04) Ross, and a growing contingent of third-generation Eagles, too. University records also indicate he told approximately 88,000 wickedly funny but painfully dry jokes during his tenure. That’s a conservative average of one gag an hour for 44 working years. It’s a low estimate if you know Bob (and, chances are, you do know Bob). As this copy of Vision goes to print, Bob is just days from retirement. After more than four decades as OC’s jack-of-all-trades entertainer in residence, he will step away from his formal role as alumni relations director on May 31. When he does, we will lose an icon. Bob would be the first to tell you that every OC student leaves a mark on our campus, but few have left the legacy Bob has. Music, humor, serious business amidst serious play—these are trademarks of OC’s DNA. Spring Sing, Follies, Fanfare—these are quintessential OC events. And we owe all of these wonderful OC things (and more) in large part to our friend Lash. By Will Blanchard (07)

Join us in celebrating Lashley by sending your well wishes to alumni@oc.edu. Dry wit strongly encouraged. 17 WWW.OC. E D U

A NEW OUTLOOK ON LIFE OC STUDENTS AND ALUMNI TAKE OPPORTUNITIES TO SAVE LIVES

OC has an extensive history of students, employees and alumni donating organs or blood to help those in need. This year, the student health organization Eagles Health Initiative partnered with Delete Blood Cancer to help save even more lives. DBC is a nonprofit organization that works with friends and communities to recruit bone marrow donors. EHI set up a system where students could be swabbed and potentially connect with people who need blood cell or bone marrow transplants. More than 350 OC students have registered to be a donor. This year, the system matched Josh Bilello (17) and Sean Bolin (16), recent OC alumni, to patients. Bolin reflected on his experience registering at OC. “I remember listening to Earl Young speak in Chapel about his personal story with bone marrow donation,” Bolin said.

18 VI SI O NSPRING2 018

“After he spoke, I was inspired to get my cheek swabbed. I was like, ‘Why not? I might be able to help a lot of people.’” After a person’s cheek is swabbed, his or her DNA is put into a system, and he or she is emailed if there is a match. The person then is walked through the steps of donating blood cells or bone marrow. Bolin had forgotten he had registered, but he was honored to donate blood cells. “After I was swabbed, I kind of forgot about it. It was in the back of my mind,” he said. “I got the initial email saying I was matched, and I was initially overwhelmed. It’s a new, good feeling. You’ve been chosen to save someone’s life. It’s an emotional, powerful situation.” Students established EHI in 2015 to make a difference in the OC community. Whitney Hall, EHI’s president and a junior biology major, reflected on the motivation for starting EHI. “Eagles Health Initiative is an organization that works to promote and educate people on different aspects of

health,” Hall said. “This includes their spiritual, physical and mental health. We decided to work on Delete Blood Cancer so people have the opportunity to impact others and potentially save their lives.” These stories of OC students donating bone marrow follow on the heels of recent organ donations by other Eagles. In the spring, Professor of Education Dr. Darin Martin donated a kidney to a 14-year-old stranger. His donation allowed Allison Kuc to get off of dialysis and have a hopeful future. OC board member Shannon Wilburn donated a kidney to Walt Erwin, a member of Park Plaza Church of Christ’s branch campus in Jenks, a Tulsa suburb. Just a few years ago, Professor of Electrical Engineering Joe Watson received a kidney from Kara Johnson, the wife of OC mathematics professor Craig Johnson. Giving the gift of life, it seems, is just part of the spirit of the OC community. By Mandolin Skipworth (19)

GROWING THE NEXT GENERATION OC ALUMS ENCOURAGE MENTORSHIP IN THEIR COMMUNITY 20 VI SI O NSPRING2 018

OC alumni Kevin and Devin Lawrence (01) have a passion for mentorship. They have a love for helping others develop into strong Christian leaders and use those characteristics to be successful in the work world. Devin, the first to go to college in her family, received a degree in early elementary education and is currently the director of advancement at Oklahoma Christian School (OCS). When asked how OC prepared her for her career, she said, “We were able to spend a lot of time in classrooms. A lot of other programs didn’t do that at the time.” She worked as a teacher for 10 years before stepping into her new staff development role—something she’s always been passionate about. Devin noticed there weren’t any staff development programs in Oklahoma and used her passion for helping others to develop a program to work with struggling teachers. She works with new teachers and shares strategies with them, encourages them, and even helps teach in their classrooms. “Teachers aren’t supported financially and they don’t always get the support they need to do their job well,” Devin said. Much like his wife, Kevin believes in the importance of mentoring others. He developed a 10-session coaching program that looks at students’ purpose, personal mission statements, and goals. He works with 15 young professionals and has had 17 people finish the program so far.

When you stick to your Christian values, that is noticed. Devin Lawrence

Kevin also helped launch an app, Thoomazo, to help OC students develop their businesses and find jobs. He wants to give back to students by encouraging them to create, serve and build. “We recently went live with the app to reach the OC community. It allows OC students to service the community and alumni,” he said. When asked about the advice they would give to new graduates, Kevin and Devin had similar thoughts. “Be humble. That is the advice that was given to me early on and it is something that will always be valued by those you are trying to influence.” Kevin said. “Your attitude makes a difference. You are hired for competency and fired for character.” Similarly, Devin said you should hold to your Christian values. “When you stick to your Christian values, that is noticed,” she said. Devin also mentioned the importance of having a mentor.

“I didn’t understand the value of that early on, but having someone give feedback and advice on what you’re doing is important,” she said. The Lawrences appreciate OC because the people at this place become your family and community. They know students are cared about and loved. They are challenged to have hard biblical discussions and grow in their faith. Kevin and Devin have become leaders in the OC community and have found it to be rewarding. “We make a good team and my appreciation for OC is strengthened because of my relationship with Devin. My passion for OC will only continue to grow as we spend more time with students, faculty, and staff,” Kevin said. “Find those relationships where you can grow together and continue to challenge one another. That teamwork has allowed us to get to where we are.” By Paige Eckhart (16)

YEAR AFTER YEAR... YOU MAKE US PROUD!

In 2012, we ventured out to accomplish what nobody thought possible: while alumni participation rates were falling nationwide, we were ready to buck the trend … because the status quo cramps our style. OC grads (you!) started heading Homeward by giving back to any passion project on campus—and you haven’t stopped since. Now, with a whopping 3,936 grad givers since the program’s launch, we couldn’t be more grateful for your overflowing support. Amazing things continue to happen on this campus, and you’re the hero that makes it all happen. Because every new grad giver helps raise our alma mater’s ranking in U.S. News & World Report, which means more partnership

22 VI SI O NSPRING2 018

opportunities for faculty and students, more grant dollars for academic and service projects, and a higher-valued degree for our grads (you again!). After six years of Homeward history, you continue to fill our spirits and fuel this campus. Spiritual life. Academics. Athletics. Missions. You impact it all. And with so many reasons to celebrate (3,936 reasons, to be exact!), OC students gathered to recognize and thank you for heading Homeward. We couldn’t help ourselves—we’re just so proud of grads like you! Because with any amount to any project, you give, you count. Year after year.

EYES UP VISUALS COMPANY LAUNCHES WITH EXCITING TECH UPDATES Last spring, Vision covered VisuALS, an eye-tracking system developed by Oklahoma Christian students that enabled those with ALS and other debilitating diseases to communicate. Even though the students who began VisuALS have graduated, the project has grown into a successful company. Since its launch, VisuALS has transformed the lives of patients not only in Oklahoma, but in 12 other states. Plans are in the works to expand the number of clinics with VisuALS devices so even more can benefit from the project. Many of the original team members still remain in leadership roles in the company. Preston Kemp (17) has become the chief product officer, and Tyler Sriver (17) acts as the chief technology officer. Professor Steve Maher, the initial

CTO, now serves as a strategic advisor. In addition to their roles in the company, veteran team members mentor current OC students. An OC Engineering systems team is working with VisuALS to develop a hardware enhancement for the system. Students have helped improve the technology in many ways. For example, sophomore Brendan McKinley developed a method for the VisuALS software resize to fit any screen. Members of VisuALS say “their passion for helping ALS patients through VisuALS helps feed their souls. They look forward to continuing their services and growing the company in the coming years. CLINIC VITALS A MOBILE APP EMPOWERS VOLUNTEERS TO GIVE BETTER PATIENT CARE

After establishing their partnership, Griffin and Hester went on to recruit fellow students from many areas of study to develop a quality app.

24 VI SI O NSPRING2 018

Oklahoma Christian students are asking all free clinic and missionary organizations to download their newest app, Clinic Vitals. OC senior and Clinic Vitals’ founder Landon Hester, along with 12 other students, have developed this free app to help better train medical volunteers at free clinics and give patients a higher quality of health care. Hester first had the idea several years ago after volunteering at free clinics both domestically and abroad during his sophomore year at Oklahoma Christian. He met with Clinic Vitals’ head programmer, Daniel Griffin (16), shortly after having an idea for a free health care app. After establishing their partnership, Griffin and Hester went on to recruit students from many areas of study to develop a quality app. He asked nursing majors on campus what the most relevant subjects and duties in free clinics are. Abby deSteiguer (17) wrote the patient interaction section, pulling from psychological research to make it more compelling for people to read. OC’s nursing skills lab coordinator, Taylor Steele (13), edited the content and her revisions will be featured on the app’s next update. Hester has made the rounds to interviews and public speaking events, including a medical missions conference, to debut the app to the medical world in order to reach his goal of getting it in to a free clinic for public volunteer use. The Butterfield Memorial Foundation agreed to sponsor the students to present a poster at a conference in Michigan. Hester wants anyone within free clinic or missionary clinic networks, or those that know someone within the network, to reach out to him to learn more about how to implement Clinic Vitals as a standard tool in their clinic at no cost to them. Clinic Vitals can be downloaded via the app store on Apple and Android devices. By Sadie Rosenthal (14)

NEW CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAM BEGINS THIS FALL Oklahoma Christian is accepting applications for its new criminal justice degree program, beginning this fall. Students will study police procedures and criminal behavior, understanding how the U.S. justice system aids society and how to improve it in the future. Dr. Sid Brown, a new faculty member, will lead the program. He is experienced in the field of law and worked as a criminal justice professor at the University of Central Oklahoma. He was the presiding judge of the Oklahoma County Juvenile Court System. He also created CASA for Oklahoma County, which trained citizen volunteers to work as watchdogs for the court in cases of abused and neglected children.

NEW CYBERSECURITY DEGREE MEETS NEEDS OC’s College of Engineering and Computer Science has launched a new undergraduate degree in cybersecurity. Courses will include Introduction to Cybersecurity, Network Security, Cloud Architecture and Security and Network Forensics, among others. Graduates can find jobs as an information security analyst, application security analyst and Curtis Coleman cyber forensics analyst, among others. The degrees also prepare students for several valuable cybersecurity certifications. Curtis Coleman will join the OC faculty as a professor of cybersecurity and computer science. He has worked in information security for decades, most recently serving as vice president and chief information security officer at Seagate Technology in Oklahoma City. Coleman worked at Seagate for more than 16 years, and served with the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserves before that. He earned his doctorate at Nova Southeastern University.

OC LAUNCHES MASTER OF ARTS IN CHRISTIANITY & CULTURE In Fall 2018, Oklahoma Christian will offer a new, fully online Master of Arts in Christianity and Culture. The MAC&C was developed for ministry leaders and members of local churches who want to study how the teachings of the Bible have continued relevance to address issues in contemporary cultures.

The 36-hour program, which can be completed in two years, will be the newest offering of OC’s ATS-accredited Graduate School of Theology, which already offers Master of Divinity, Master of Theological Studies, and Master of Arts in Christian Ministry programs.

CNHS OPENS NEW EXERCISE SCIENCE LAB With OC’s new nutrition and exercise science major growing under the direction of Dr. Paul House (94), the College of Natural and Health Sciences has opened a new hands-on lab. The lab’s centerpiece is a metabolic cart, a high-tech piece of equipment used to measure performance-based physiological status and outcomes. “It conducts a gas analysis of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production,” House said. “The metabolic cart makes a breath-by-breath analysis while you are on a treadmill or a cycle.” The nutrition and exercise science degree is a stepping stone to physical therapy school and medical school. “The new lab gives us the opportunity to see the things we learn about in class come to life,” freshman Elise Duverger said.

STUDENTS LEARN FROM SPORTS EXECUTIVES OC’s new sports management program in the College of Business Administration is off to a fast start. In the first semester of classes, almost 20 guest speakers spoke to students about working in sports. Students heard from Dallas Cowboys and Oklahoma City Thunder executives, a sports agent and professional athlete, and more. “I want our students to know what they need to know and who they need to know,” said instructor Wes McKinzie (98), who leads the program. “Networking is a big part of success in sports management, and we’re in a great market for that. Oklahoma City provides big-league opportunities, but it also offers a small-town feel and small-town access in a lot of ways. These executives want to help our students however they can.”

ALUM COVERS OLYMPICS FOR NBC AFFILIATES NATIONWIDE OC graduate Erin (McLemore 05) Cargile had a front-row seat to the 2018 Winter Olympics. The Emmy-nominated reporter, an anchor for KXAN in Austin, Texas, was chosen to travel to South Korea by Nexstar, which owns the station.

“I am here with a team of six reporters covering the Olympics for dozens of stations across the country that our company owns,” Cargile said during her trip. “I am reporting for all of our Texas NBC stations, so I have to think about which athletes they are interested in beyond the big names. I am responsible for morning live shots for about 10 stations, so I write those scripts and go live in their morning newscasts.” Cargile said her time working in broadcast journalism at Oklahoma Christian helped prepare her for her time in Pyeongchang and her work in Texas. “It was at OC that I first learned how to shoot and edit, and turn stories for Eagle Angle,” Cargile said. “That training was invaluable and translates to exactly what I am doing here every day—the stress, deadlines and good storytelling.”

OC’s “Afterburners” team finished 10th in Aero Design East competition.

STUDENTS PLACE IN TOP 10 AT INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT CONTEST For the second year in a row, OC engineering students placed in the top 10 in an international flight competition. OC competed in the Society of Automotive Engineering Aero Design East competition, which saw 35 teams from six countries design, build-to-scale and successfully fly radiocontrolled airplanes with a payload. “This is a truly international competition, and our team’s goal is to be among the best every year,” Assistant Professor of Engineering Brad Buxton said. The contest provides beneficial future career opportunities for students and prepares them for situations they will likely encounter after college. OC’s team included six juniors who will be well-prepared for next year. “They are already thinking about the design of their next airplane and now understand how hard they must work to win,” Buxton said.

PHI ALPHA THETA WINS 22ND STRAIGHT NATIONAL AWARD The OC chapters of Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honor Society, and Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society, continue to merit recognition. The Phi Alpha Theta Chapter Tau Sigma, under the direction of Dr. John Maple (72), won its 22nd consecutive Best Chapter Award for Division I.

Six OC students presented at the Oklahoma Regional Conference. Turner Smith placed first in the American, Undergraduate category and Cody Milner third in the World, Undergraduate category. The Pi Sigma Alpha Chapter also presented at Oklahoma Political Science Association conference. Oklahoma Christian had three of the five undergraduate presenters.

PRINCETON REVIEW RECOGNIZES GAMING & ANIMATION PROGRAM The Princeton Review honored Oklahoma Christian’s gaming and animation program with a position on its 2018 list “Top 50 Undergraduate Schools for Game Design.” This is the program’s sixth straight year to make the list. OC’s Sparks Advanced Visualization Lab is the hub for virtual reality and augmented reality. It features 20 workstations, each with a high-powered PC with a 27” display and a dedicated 22” Dell Canvas drawing tablet. Each four-person pod surrounds a 65” HD display for group collaboration. The lab hosts a Formlabs 3D printer, Glowforge CNC plotter, Playstation development kits, Xbox development kits and all the latest VR and AR equipment, such as the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Microsoft HoloLens. The Baugh Motion Capture Studio features an Optitrack Motion Capture system, as well as workstations for students. The Cox Digital Art Lab is a workhorse for graphic design, digital painting and 3D modeling. It has 24 workstations, each with an i7 iMac and a paired Wacom Cintiq drawing tablet. Students learn more than 30 industry standard applications such as Maya, 3DS Max, Substance Tools, Unity and Unreal. Several students have gone on to work for studios such as Dreamworks, Treyarch, Sony Imageworks, Rooster Teeth, Riot Games and others.

OC TEAMS DOMINATE STATE COMPETITIONS An ethics team from Oklahoma Christian, directed and coached by Dr. Jeff Simmons (90), won the OK Student Ethics Challenge for the sixth consecutive year. This championship was both extra special and bittersweet. Both of OC’s teams advanced to the final round for the first time ever, with the winner capturing the title by just one point. Oklahoma Christian qualified for the regional tournament and eventually advanced to its sixth straight national competition. On the technology front, Professor Don Leftwich (75) and Assistant Professor Dr. Robert Nix (06) took OC Mathematics and Computer Science students to the ACM International Computer Programming Competition in November. Just like the statewide ethics contest, OC’s teams placed both first and second. Oklahoma Christian outpaced teams from Baylor, Louisiana State, Oklahoma, TCU, Tulsa, Abilene Christian and more.

OC HELPS ST. GREGORY’S STUDENTS GRADUATE After 142 years of Catholic education, St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Oklahoma, closed its doors, but OC helped its students graduate on time. “No one really believed that the school was shutting down until it was actually over,” senior nursing student Kayde Nault said. Seven seniors and four juniors transferred to OC. Junior Summer Guarnieri has a family history at St. Gregory’s, and was nervous when she first came to OC. But she has had a positive experience. “In a way, the school closing was an awful situation,” she said. “But I think it was a blessing in disguise because God has already given me so many new opportunities at Oklahoma Christian.”

OC WELCOMES NEW DEANS Two outstanding OC faculty members have been appointed deans to the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Biblical Studies. Dr. Tina (Olmstead 82) Winn, a professor in the Department of Psychology and Family Science, will lead OC’s College of Liberal Arts. Winn returned to her alma mater in 2010 after Dr. Tina Winn a combined 23 years at Northwestern Oklahoma State University and the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. At USAO, she received several research grants and served as a division leader for seven academic departments. At OC, Winn leads the Healthy Brain/Healthy Mind research project, a five-week program designed to promote positive Dr. Charles Rix mental health among college students. Winn also is a licensed professional counselor and maintains a practice in individual and family therapy.

Dr. Charles Rix, an associate professor of Bible at OC, has chaired the university’s undergraduate programs in Biblical Studies and has served as interim dean for more than a year. Rix came to OC in 2011 from New Brunswick Theological Seminary, where he worked as an associate dean and professor, but offers career experience in ministry and international business as well. He holds graduate degrees in business, theology and philosophy, and completed his Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible from Drew Theological School. He served as the pulpit minister for Monmouth Church of Christ in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, and previously held financial positions with ExxonMobil Corporation. As interim dean, Rix helped build the Children’s Ministry Certificate program, an online training program for church education volunteers and staff. The program has an impressive enrollment worldwide and hosts an annual conference for children’s education leaders, teachers, and volunteers.

ORNDORFF TO LEAD POLITICAL SCIENCE PROGRAM After an extensive search, the Department of History and Political Science has hired Dr. Trey Orndorff to head the political science program. Orndorff comes to OC from Daytona State College, where he was the runnerup for the Association of Florida Colleges’ Professor of the Year in 2014. He has six years of full-time teaching experience and has published work in political journals, emphasizing social media’s effects on politics.

ALUMNUS HELPS OC HOST PREACHING CONFERENCE Director of Church Resources Grady King (77) recently launched Kerygma, a conference for preachers co-hosted by

OC Church Resources and the HOPE Network. Kerygma is a Greek word for the core message of salvation in Jesus Christ. This year, Kerygma brought more than 50 preachers to the OC campus for encouragement and practical resources. The event features preachers speaking to preachers, and allows younger and older preachers to connect, share and learn. Speakers included John Cannon, Dwayne Case (07), Steve Cloer, Monte Cox, Jack English (71), Eddie Sharp, Jim Martin, Lynn McMillon (63), Charles Rix, Terry Rush, Paul Shero and Jerry Taylor. In addition to Keryma, Church Resources is currently in the planning stages of a conference for elders by elders.

PATTERSON’S ETHICS BOOK TRANSLATED INTO CHINESE Dr. Philip Patterson’s book, Media Ethics: Issues and Cases, was selected by the University of China-Renmin Press to have the eighth edition of translated into Chinese. The book, co-authored by Lee Wilkins, has previously been translated into the Korean, Ethiopian and Indonesian languages. It is used by universities across the United States and around the world. “The book contains discussions of religion and morality, truth telling, politics and the like. And, of course, the entire book discusses ethics,” Patterson said. “Imagine getting to raise these issues in China without fear of censorship, reparation or retaliation. To think of this book being read and discussed in a Chinese classroom is humbling.”

A BRAND NEW ‘CAF’ When the Thrive campaign launched in 2013, at its heart was a massive, three-phase project: build a coffee shop, bring recognized restaurant chains to campus, and create a new, modern dining hall. Five years and $8.6 million in generous donations later, this massive dream will soon become a full-fledged reality. The Brew, our new coffee shop, just finished its first full year. Alfredo’s Express and Chick-fil-A Express treat thousands of students a week in the Gaylord University Center. And this summer, OC will break ground on the new 20,000-square-foot dining hall. Designed with our students in mind, the new Caf will feature large windows to bathe the space in natural light. Restaurant-style seating will bring visual interest and comfort to the room. A change in how we manage the food line will allow students to live, study, and play in the cafeteria all hours of the day without having to “swipe in.” Plus, the Caf have a variety of new made-to-order food options: pasta, Mongolian barbeque, pizza, grill, wraps, and more. Work on the facility is expected to take 12 months, which means it open its doors to a few thousand rumbling stomachs in fall 2019.

Burns was a six-time NAIA All-America honoree in track in the early 1990s, highlighted by winning the national title in the indoor 440-yard dash in 1993. Guymon earned NAIA All-America honors in track and cross country five times from 1982 to 1984, and was a member of OC distance medley relay teams that won national titles in 1983 and 1984. Lizarralde made the NAIA All-America first-team list in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. He won eight individual tournament titles, including two NCAA Division I events and the 2004 Sooner Athletic Conference and NAIA Region 6 championships. She also earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors as a junior and senior. Skiba was one of the greatest female athletes in the university’s history, earning NAIA All-America titles five times and winning national titles in the marathon in 1991 and 1993 – making her OC’s first female national champion in any sport. By her career’s end, she held nine OC school records. Nikitina-Helvey was a three-time NAIA All-America tennis player, earning first-team honors in 2000, 2001 and 2002, and an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-America pick in 2002. COSHOW STARTS SEASON IN TRIPLE-A Cale Coshow (16) started the 2018 baseball season just one step from the big leagues. The former OC standout was on the opening-day roster for the Scranton/WilkesBarre RailRiders, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. The 25-year-old pitcher was a non-roster invitee to the Yankees’ spring training. He made five appearances with one save and a 5.79 ERA. “My goals are simple this year—stay healthy the whole year and make

my major-league debut,” Coshow said. “I feel closer now than I ever have. I just have to keep bringing the intensity and work ethic every day and it will eventually pay off.” If that call comes, Coshow would become the first former OC player to make an MLB roster. He’s already the first from OC to reach the Double-A and Triple-A levels in the minor leagues.

MOON INDUCTED INTO HEARTLAND HALL OF FAME Former basketball standout John Moon (17) became OC’s first member of the Heartland Conference Hall of Fame. The 7-foot center starred for OC from 2013 to 2017. He became the first basketball player from the conference to be named to the prestigious Academic All-America first-team list by the College Sports Information Directors of America, earning that honor twice. He’s one of only six Heartland players ever to make an All-America John Moon basketball team. He also was a three-time All-Heartland Conference selection and twotime league defensive player of the year. Moon was named the Heartland’s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2016-17. On the Heartland’s career statistical lists, he finished No. 1 in blocked shots (237), No. 2 in rebounding (812) and No. 3 in scoring (1,881 points).

OC will add men’s and women’s bowling as club sports for the 2018-19 academic year. The head coach will be James Hayes, who is in his seventh season as UCO’s bowling coach after serving three years at Edmond Memorial High School. “I am excited about the potential for success at OC,” Hayes said. “I think we can build a powerhouse. OC just feels like home when you walk around campus – like one big family.” OC will compete in the Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Circuit for half of its tournaments, a grouping in which they will face teams such as Arkansas, Louisiana State, New Mexico, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech, as well as NCAA Division II and NAIA schools. OC will be only the third Oklahoma university to offer collegiate bowling, joining Central Oklahoma and Southwestern Christian.

OC’s swim teams made a big splash in their first season of intercollegiate competition.

SWIM PROGRAMS COMPETE IN FIRST SEASON Carter Shelton, Noah Woollweever, Kurt Gscheidle and Derek Duckworth will be the answers to OC trivia questions in the years to come. The 200-yard freestyle relay team members became OC’s first all-conference athletes in swimming when they were named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference second-team list. The foursome posted a school-record time of 1:27.15 at the RMAC Championships, placing fourth in the race. This is OC’s first season competing in intercollegiate swimming. “We are so excited for Carter, Noah, Kurt and Derek,” OC coach Josh Davis said. “They worked hard and improved all season long and it showed at the conference meet. This is a great reward for all that work.”

STANFORD, HAMMER EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORS Layne Hammer and McKenzie Stanford became the first two Division II All-Americans in OC track and field history. Hammer wrapped up one of the greatest running careers in OC history with her first All-America honor. Battling injuries, she placed 12th at the national meet in the 5,000 meters. Stanford placed 12th the high jump and became the first athlete in OC history to earn All-America recognition in two unrelated sports at the Division II level. She received AllAmerica honorable mention following her junior season of basketball in 2015-16.

HUSLIG, 4X400 RELAY TEAM EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORS Landon Huslig and his 4x400-meter relay teammates Ian Colbert, Sawyer Pehkonen and Austin Kruzich landed on the NCAA Division II All-America first-team list on the heels of

the Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships. Huslig was fourth in the 400 meters and the 4x400 relay squad placed seventh. Huslig now is a four-time Division II All-American while Pehkonen picked up his second AllAmerica award. It’s the first All-America honor for Kruzich and Colbert.

SENIOR SENDOFF

This program takes place before graduating students officially join OC’s alumni ranks. Our hope is that new graduates become OC alumni with a strong sense of belonging, and that they know we’re grateful for their choice to attend Oklahoma Christian. Activities funded by Alumni Relations may include dinner at an Oklahoma City Thunder basketball game with seats in the Summit Box (photos from this year to the right) and a food truck picnic on campus. If you want to support this program, go to oc.edu, click on “Give to OC,” choose “Show other giving options,” then click “Senior Sendoff.”

Our monthly online newsletter features recent stories and upcoming events. Between issues of Vision, it’s a great way to keep up with what’s happening at your alma mater. Subscribe to our Eagle Excerpts email by contacting us at alumni@oc.edu.

This group of alumni functions as a sounding board regarding alumni programs and events, and as a conduit for OC alumni with questions, thoughts, and/or concerns about our alma mater. Feel free to contact members with questions, concerns, or ideas. Their info is available at www.oc.edu/NAC.

WHAT YOU CAN DO Update your records to continue receiving information about your alma mater and alumni perks. Keep your info up to date by emailing changes to alumni@oc.edu. Watch for and join in alumni gatherings and activities in your area. Many cities host recruiting/alumni gatherings in alumni homes (Road Shows), summer sendoffs for OC students (Eagle Exits), and tailgate parties for away athletic games. Consider helping us financially when you can so current students benefit from the generosity that many passed on to us during our OC years. Even a few dollars a month by a large number of people can make a big difference. To find out how to get started, contact us at 405.425.5110 or go to www.oc.edu/ homeward.
