Hidden Account Numbers Worth $50 Each month, OEC will pay $50 to the two co-op members who locate their hidden account numbers inside the Co-op News that month. The hidden account numbers will be placed at random within the text of each issue and not on the mailing label. The amounts will simultaneously increase in $50 increments until one or both account numbers are located by their respective owners or until the maximum of $500 is reached.

1. One of the hidden account numbers must be your own.

2. You must advise OEC by phone, mail or in person at the co-op’s office by the 15th of the month.

Patrick Grace, CEO OEC's mission is to improve our members' quality of life through the safe delivery of highly reliable, reasonably priced electric service, innovative energy programs and exceptional member service. One of the ways we strive to improve the quality of life for members and residents in our communities is through the Operation Round Up® (ORU) program.

In its 24th year, the program has donated nearly $5 million dollars to the many communities served by OEC. It's part of what we do. While it's easy for those few extra cents each month to go unnoticed, the impact this program has had on our neighbors, friends, local nonprofits and even some of us is worth celebrating.

Did you know those who make up the OEC Foundation, Inc. board of directors volunteer their time and resources for the ORU program? The board consists of 10 committed volunteers from all across our service area. As a former board member for a similar foundation in Norman, I can say it is tough to decide what causes, organizations or people get money and which ones you have to decline simply because there isn't enough funding. So many good people and organizations are doing a lot of good things in our cities and towns, and it takes special people to serve on a board of this caliber. I am very proud of the work they do not only on the OEC Foundation board, but also in their communities.

At an average of $6 per year, members who round up their electric bills each month allow the OEC Foundation to fund worthwhile programs and provide basic needs. One of the unique parts of this program is the personal touch it has for individuals and families in our service area — whether they are OEC members or not. Over the years, our members have helped provide dental and vision care, handicap accessible home improvements, wheelchairs and other vital medical equipment, and more. The generosity of our members amazes me.

I encourage you to read the ORU report in your Co-op News each month to see the impact your dollars are having on your communities.

ORU grant provides lifesaving equipment for Newcastle Fire Department

A

June 2017 Operation Round Up® (ORU) grant to the Newcastle Fire Department (NFD) proved to be a life-saving decision when the department's fire fighters used the equipment to save a person's life following a vehicle accident.

The $2,830 grant allowed the NFD to update its extrication equipment, meaning quicker and more efficient work when responding to vehicle accidents involving entrapment.

"The extrication time for this particular incident was under four minutes from start to finish," said Lieutenant Tony Samaniego. "This was in large part because of the ease [of hooking up the new equipment]."

The event occurred a few days after the new equipment was installed.

"Without the upgrade, this could have easily been a five- to seven-minute process," said Samaniego.

Every minute counts during emergency responses, and thanks to the generosity of the OEC members who choose to round up their bills each month, the individual involved in this accident lives to tell about it.

Fourteen Oklahoma co-ops

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and — recently added — solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

n a 2016 member satisfaction survey, OEC members indicated a high interest in electronic forms of communication — over half of members currently have an email address on file and are receiving their bill via email. Now, those members have the opportunity to receive the Co-op News, notices and other materials electronically, as well.

“A large part of our members have proven to be tech-savvy and respond well when we introduce something new,” said Autumn McMahon, manager of marketing and member relations. “We are taking it one step further and giving those members the option to receive their news from OEC the same way

they already receive their other news: in their email.”

The Co-op News e-newsletter features the same content as the paper copy and a link to an electronic version of the magazine. Members who opt in to digital communications can also expect to receive meeting invitations and event promotions via email, as well.

“Digital communication is a lot less costly when taking printing and postage costs into consideration," said McMahon. "Anytime we can reduce costs, the members win.”

Clint Mobley in Guatemala for electrification project

Thirteen co-op volunteer linemen departed the country Oct. 10 for Guatemala. One of the team members is OEC lineman Clint Mobley. The team will build power lines in the isolated village of Chiis located in the northwestern part of the country, and provide first-time electricity to about 80 families. [2934109707] Electric cooperatives have a longstanding tradition of bringing lights where there are none. In a spirit of cooperation, the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives (OAEC) partnered with NRECA International, the philanthropic arm for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), to electrify this povertystricken village in rural Guatemala.

At press time, the project is still underway. Volunteers are staying at a training center near the village. When completed, the project will consist of approximately 1.74 miles of primary line and 1.2 miles of secondary line.

The village is isolated, economically vulnerable, and mainly produces beans, spices and corn for self-consumption.

Most villagers speak a Mayan-based dialect, Kekchi. A local utility,

ADECORK, will generate power to the village by way of a small hydroelectric plant. Volunteers are scheduled to return to the U.S. on Oct. 28.

“We are proud of the volunteers.

Bringing electricity to remote areas in developing countries takes electric cooperatives back to their roots,” said OAEC General Manager Chris Meyers.

“It reinforces our commitment to improve the quality of life for local communities at home and abroad.”

It’s a life-changing gift.”

ELECTRIC SAFETY

OEC values electric safety and believes in educating first responders, emergency personnel, children and the general public on the dangers of electricity. With our new Live Line Demo, we will be able to do just that.

“The safety of everyone — not just OEC employees and members — is a priority for us, and this Live Line Demo will help ensure the safety of everyone who encounters electricity,” said Energy Efficiency and Solutions Specialist Daniel Lofland, who adopted the idea from a similar demo at CoServ Electric Cooperative in Texas.

Field Design Technician Brad Hunter, along with District Lineman Clifford Chastain and Journeyman Power Lineman Ryan Spears, assisted Lofland in the engineering, planning, construction and fine-tuning of the Live Line Demo. District linemen and their helpers assist in the operation of the Live Line Demo as it travels throughout OEC’s service area.

“How to safely interact with electricity is life-saving knowledge to have,” said Lofland.

OEC utilizes the Live Line Demo for first responder and disaster training, safety education at schools and for the general public.

“After pre-planning and drawing a blue print, it took about three days to construct and a week or so of finetuning," said Lofland.

The result is an educational tool that contributes to the electric safety of everyone.

YOUTH & LEADERSHIP

Applications now being accepted for 2018 Youth Tour contest Perhaps OEC’s best-known and most anticipated youth program, Youth Tour is a week-long, all-expenses-paid educational trip to Washington, D.C. in June of each year. OEC annually sponsors four delegates — all juniors — from high schools within its service territory on Youth Tour. Students travel with the Oklahoma delegation (70+ students) to our nation’s capital where they tour historic sites and national landmarks, meet Oklahoma’s congressional delegation and more. Youth Tour has earned a reputation as “a trip of a lifetime” by former participants. Youth Tour will be held June 8-14, 2018.

THE CONTEST

The Youth Tour competition process is designed to reflect the realities of our society and its preference for dynamic, personal interactions. In today's professional world, employers and thought leaders want to see presenters who make a connection with the audience while communicating a message.

In addition to the four finalists chosen to attend Youth Tour, another four will be chosen to attend RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) at Goddard Youth Camp. More information will be available soon.

THE PRESENTATION

Applicants must choose an energy-related topic. Topics can range from "America's energy future" to "alternative fuel sources" to "electricity education in schools." Each applicant may choose his or her own energy-related topic.

CHICKEN POT PIE WITH BISCUIT CRUST

1/4 cup butter 1 small onion, chopped 3 stalk celery, chopped 3 carrots, chopped 2/3 cup frozen peas 3 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped 1/4 tsp dried thyme 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

2 cup low-sodium chicken broth 2/3 cup half-and-half Salt and pepper, to taste 3 cup cooked chicken, shredded 1 can refrigerated flaky-style biscuit dough 1 egg yolk, beaten 1 tbsp water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Melt butter in a skillet over medium-low heat and cook the onion, celery, and carrots until the celery and carrots are tender, about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in peas, parsley, thyme and flour, and cook, stirring constantly, until the flour coats the vegetables and begins to fry, about 5 minutes. Whisk in chicken broth and half-and-half and cook until the sauce is thick and bubbling. Season to taste with salt and black pepper and mix in the chicken meat.

Transfer the chicken, vegetables, and sauce into a 2-quart baking dish. Arrange biscuits on top of the filling. In a small bowl, beat egg yolk with water; brush egg yolk on the biscuits.

Bake in the preheated oven until the biscuits are golden brown and the pie filling is bubbling, 20 to 25 minutes. Let rest 10 minutes before serving.
