In this season, while we are all trying to find the way to express our appreciation of others, we seek to find the thing apart. Not always just an object, but a relationship of sharing, giving, and supporting our community. We have created this holiday supplement to share the unique talents and style from our partners in the hope that relationships will be made not merely in commerce, but in appreciation and support for flavor in our community. I’d like to thank the artists, shop owners and tastemakers that have supported and helped in this pursuit.

FAUX FLORAL FUN My Canadian grandmother loves a bold red poinsettia. Every year for the past 10 years on my birthday, I receive a check for $20 with the memo section reading, “holiday poinsetta”. As a then new mother, I adhered to the alleged myth surrounding poinsetta leaves being poisonous to pets and people, and therefore attempted different ways to wrangle holiday cheer into our home. From paint brushed trees, or colorfully flocked branches, there is more to offer than expected when integrating “faux” holiday styles, so we shall keep it light here. The reality is, the best locally sourced pine, cypress and fir adornment sells quick these days. Even if you aren’t concerned your dog or toddler will grow curiously attracted to the shapely beauty of your new poinsetta friend and gobble away at the leaves,
we can always talk about “sustainability” and “reuse” in good company, no? Whenever you catch yourself wanting to mix a few pine branches or live floral filler, grab these seuss-like happy branches (left) to mix things up. They are tall enough to fill your favorite vase solo or add a nice punchy vibe to your traditional leanings. These painted trees can be used as a fun tablescape accent for the more whimsically open or they really shine as a team in all their pastel rainbow glory as a side display. Better yet, take the load off yourself this year and give the floral design talents behind A Date With Iris a call. Their designs always spark conversation as each order is infused with exactly the right touches to charm and delight clients of discerning taste and preference. From desks, to boardrooms, or holiday tables, you are in good hands with ADWI for sourcing stunning styles.

I’m Dreaming of a Mindful Holiday Season by Sarah James Dorr of Whoorl
The holidays are upon us, which means the promise of friends, family, chilly nights, libations, social gatherings, and gift-giving. Also, the dread of friends, family, chilly nights, libations, social gatherings, and gift-giving. How is it even possible that the most cherished time of the year can also be the most stressful? Hell, I don’t know. I’m just here to help you get through it in one piece. My personal holiday narrative goes a little something like this. Things start out with a bang - I’ve got the Bing Crosby Christmas station playing on Pandora 24/7 starting the day after Thanksgiving. Tree trimmed, presents bought, parties to attend, generalized merriment. However, as the 2nd and 3rd week of December roll around, all that generalized merriment starts to morph into something less, well,
merry. The demands of a robust social schedule, cranky kids, babysitters, and extended family ON TOP of, you know, the usual daily responsibilities of a mother makes things a little frazzled. And then the pièce de résistance, the crème de la crème, the double decker of glorious insanity that is Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Our crew is usually operating on a 2-hour incremental schedule of extended-family stops during this time. I know, I know. Where’s my holiday spirit, you ask?! I’m sounding a bit like a scrooge here, but in chatting with friends, I’ve come to realize that although we all truly love the holidays, it can be taxing on even the most well-intentioned. So, without further ado, I give you 4 things to keep yourselves grounded and mindful through this holiday season.
1. BREATHE.
2. EXERCISE GENTLY.
Yes, I realize this is something our bodies do without aid, but it’s a proven fact that many of us don’t breathe properly, whether it be holding our breath during stressful times (Yoohoo! Over here!), taking too shallow of a breath or breathing too rapidly. When you feel a bit overwhelmed, take time to sit down for a few minutes and take slow, steady breaths. I prefer the practice of “square breathing” - inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, exhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts. Repeat until you fall asleep. Kidding. Kind of.
Finding time to exercise during the busy holiday season can be difficult, but even a few gentle stretches or a restorative yoga class can completely reset your sapped brain. The key is to gently coax yourself into relaxing. Don’t let your brain trick you into going 90-to-nothing all day long. You need to remind your body and mind that the gogo-go mentality isn’t always what’s needed. One of my favorite quick (5-minutes!) yoga routines for relaxation can be found here.
3. LAUGH.
4. PRACTICE GRATITUDE.
Laughter truly is the best medicine. Whether it be with friends, your favorite sitcom or a hilarious video on YouTube, a good guffaw reduces stress hormones, and in turn, possibly boosts immune function. (Which is pretty crucial during the winter months.)
It’s so easy to get caught up in the craziness of the holidays, but sometimes all you need is to step back and look at everything you have in your life. We are among some of the most privileged here on Earth, and taking the time to be thankful for all of the goodness in our lives is a wonderful way to get back into your stress-free groove. It works wonders for me.
WISHING ALL OF YOU A WONDERFUL, SEMI-RELAXING HOLIDAY SEASON. CHEERS!

FELIZ NAVIDAD Spice up your holiday with a meal dedicated to finding the joy in small things.
TAPAS
A brief history
The “lid” or the “cover” in the Spaniard’s culture of intuitive eating has evolved from many legends of story, which the impassioned lovers are open to sharing. But only if it’s paired lightly with a glass of your favorite Spanish house red. Unique for it’s historic references to 13th century King Alfonso, known as The Wise King, one story breathes influence in mentioning the king had fallen ill and was only able to eat small bites of food while he aided his illness together with small portions of wine. Having overcome the illness, he immediately made a decree throughout the land, declaring everyone should eat small bites of food while drinking wine. Many interesting variations can be found as to the actual intent behind the origin or how they gained popularity in Spanish culture. However, we can all agree, tapas spice up the holiday party concept and add fun (and the notion of responsibility) to those in attendance. The beauty behind tapas is simple. They are small delectable bites, whether it’s sliced chorizo, served
with a toothpick, sided with baguette and the creamy patriot Manchego, to a few stuffed spanish olives or spiced nuts. However, no tapas party will feel real for anyone if the “king of all tapas” was not invited—tortilla espanola. The story behind the conception of Spain’s motherland comfort tapa, was told to me by Maria Bozarth, a youthfully beautiful now 80 year old, with a heart for her homeland and an enduring light which shines from within, especially when given the chance to tell stories from home. The king of Spain (there is no mention of our wise Alfonso) stops at a farm one evening when on a long journey and needing to retreat for the night. The farmers who take him in have very little to eat, and the mother and daughter discussed how they would find any food to eat, not to mention, a meal for a king. After taking quick stock of food stores, they determined they had a couple of potatoes, an onion and a few eggs from their chicken. The mother became worrisome about the simplicity of the means, the daughter reassured her, “He may be a king, but mother, for royalty it is all in the presentation.” It was from this humble faith, the king fell in love with the dish and the recipe for the “tortilla espanola” or as Maria’s Spain calls it, “tortilla patata” was born.
MARIA’S TORTILLA DE PATATA 4 potatoes (russet preferred) 6 eggs ½ onion ½ red bell pepper ½ cups olive oil ½ tsp salt
Chop the potatoes into thin slices, and the onion and red pepper. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the olive oil into the pan. Once the oil is hot, add the potato slices and onion, making sure they are well-covered by the oil; add more oil if necessary. Cook for 20 minutes until the potatoes, onions and pepper are soft. Drain the oil and combine the potato mixture with the eggs. Add the salt and mix well. In a 10-inch by 2 1/2 inch deep nonstick skillet, add the olive oil and heat over medium-high heat. Pour in the potato, egg, and onion mixture. Lower the heat to medium-low and cook for 4 to 5 minutes, until the bottom of the omelet is very light brown. Using a flat ceramic plate, cover the frying pan and flip the omelet over onto the plate. Immediately slip the uncooked side back into the pan. Cook for another 4 to 5 minutes, or until the other side is a very light brown. Remove the omelet from the pan to a plate and cut into pie shaped wedges.

EARL GREY, ORANGE & CHOCOLATE CINNAMON BUNS
Original Recipe by Claire Ragozzino of Vidya Living Photography by Choate House
Yeast ½ cup almond milk ½ cup earl grey tea 1 packet yeast 1 tsp coconut sugar Boil hot water, steep 2 bags earl gray tea in ½ cup water. After 15 minutes remove the tea bags. In a medium saucepan, heat the earl gray and almond milk together on a low heat. Remove and pour into a small bowl. Test temperature before adding yeast, you want it around 90-100 degrees F. Stir in the yeast and a sugar, then allow to activate for 15-20 minutes. The yeast is active when it starts to create bubbles on the surface of the bowl. Dough 3 cups spelt flour ½ cup coconut sugar 1 tbsp ground earl gray tea leaves 1 tsp baking powder ¼ tsp baking soda ½ tsp salt 1 tbsp cinnamon ½ orange, juiced & zested ¼ cup cold ghee, cubed (or coconut oil) In a mixing bowl, combine the spelt flour, coconut sugar, tea leaves, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Mix lightly. Next, add the orange juice, zest and cubed ghee, slowly mixing until well incorporated and the mixture begins to form in a slightly wet and sticky ball of dough. On a dry surface, sprinkle spelt flour and knead the ball of dough 130 times (about 3-5 minutes). Place back in the mixing bowl, cover with a damp cloth and allow dough to rise for 1-2 hours. Once ready, roll the
dough out and brush with melted ghee or coconut oil. Sprinkle a heavy layer of cinnamon on top, then spoon the filling mixture evenly across the dough. Gently roll the dough into a log. Use a sharp knife to score the cinnamon rolls, then gently cut and place into a greased baking pan. Bake at 375 for 20-25 minutes. Remove from oven, allow to slightly cool before serving with a heaping helping of frosting. Filling ½ orange, juiced & zested 1 tbsp cinnamon 2 tbsp ghee (or coconut oil) 4 tbsp maple syrup 1 bar dark chocolate, crushed In a small saucepan, combine all ingredients and heat on medium low. Stir frequently to avoid clumping. The mixture will become thick and sticky. Remove from heat and spread evenly on the rolled out dough. Orange Frosting 1 ½ cup raw cashews, soaked overnight ½ cup maple syrup ¼ cup melted coconut oil 2 oranges, juiced & zested 1 tsp lemon juice ½ tsp vanilla bean pinch of Himalayan pink salt Combine all ingredients in a high-speed blender, puree until creamy. Transfer to a bowl and store in your fridge to thicken before spreading on the cinnamon rolls. Makes 6 large cinnamon buns
