Comprehensive brewery and taproom guide Oklahoma City area offers a large variety of breweries and taprooms by Peter Brzycki

photos provided

When Oklahoma voters overwhelmingly approved State Question 792 in November 2016 – a ballot initiative commonly characterized as an opportunity to modernize the state’s oppressive liquor laws – it set in motion a chain of events that, among other things, has resulted in two dozen breweries and taprooms in Central Oklahoma, almost all having been planned and opened as a result of the new law. By the time the new statutes went into effect on October 1, 2018, what had been a handful of breweries in the state had turned into a legitimate movement. Overnight, the changes provided local brewers with approximately 3,000 additional outlets for their full-strength product, as grocery and convenience stores were finally allowed to sell beer above 3.2% alcohol content along with wine. Additionally, breweries could now sell their own beer on-site, allowing patrons to come into the facilities and sit down with a frosty cold one adjacent to where it was being created. Now, there are 20 breweries with taprooms in the Oklahoma City Area; 4 more are under construction, and many more in the planning stages.

Collaboration is key Limited distribution had previously confined passionate local brewers to more or less be hobbyist rather than scaled businesses. Many of them knew each other and many more waited in the wings, long interested but limited due to regulations. Seeing the need for a coordinated and professional approach to changing state laws for the betterment of the brewing industry, in 2015 the Craft Brewers Association of Oklahoma (CBAO) was born. The stated mission of the CBAO: “Dedicated to educating and creating awareness among legislators, regulators and the general public of the issues facing the craft brewing industry in Oklahoma, and to promoting a healthy economic environment that enables public choices in the marketplace for the consumer, and opportunity and access to the marketplace by Oklahoma breweries.” Most Oklahoma breweries are members of CBAO, with dues based on distribution. In addition to collaborative marketing and promotion, the association also pays a lobbyist to help

drive beneficial new legislation. This past August, the group hired a new Executive Director, Tabbi Burwell, a six-year veteran of the Oklahoma City Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and an experienced public relations and marketing professional. Burwell is working toward launching a new website which she hopes will launch in the coming weeks: craftbeerok.org. In addition to being a directory for Oklahoma breweries, the site will showcase members and feature news, events and allow for donations directly to the businesses. An enthusiasts program is also in the works where an annual fee will yield a t-shirt and a free beer at participating taprooms. In addition, the group has also pa r tnered w ith the Ok la homa Department of Agriculture to create a Craft Beet Trail, which will be vigorously promoted through various state agencies including printed guides and at state welcome centers and a wayfinding system. The CBAO is also hoping to change the state law that does not allow beer manufactures to specifically name the outlets that offer their products.

Molson Coors began increasing their contracts with large and small canning companies alike. The rise of craft beer nationwide – and the resulting increase in distribution to grocery and convenience stores – has also fueled demand along with new popular products like hard seltzer. The result is that local brewers are struggling to get enough cans for their product at a time when corresponding draft sales are down significantly due to reduced business in bars, restaurants and taprooms. Almost all local breweries now provide carry-out through ‘growlers’, a 64 oz refillable jug made of glass, plastic, ceramic or stainless steel. Some also offer ‘crowlers’, a 32 oz. Can of beer which holds approximately two pints. Burwell stressed the importance of supporting these breweries, as many are very new operations and are trying to survive after huge investments just as Covid-19 reshaped consumer patterns. “I encourage beer lovers to support the local breweries any way they can, whether you buy in a grocery or liquor store, order local craft beers in bars and restaurants, or buy directly from the taprooms.”

Covid-19 challenges The rise of the brings can shortage taprooms Like so many other industries, the coronavirus has had a strong impact on local brewers. Beyond the decrease in walk-in business and general supply challenges, the industry is in the midst of a unique problem: a nationwide can shortage. Before the pandemic, can manufacturing was already experiencing record demand and the big companies like Pepsi, Coke, Anheuser-Busch and

What started with the Bricktown Brewery has now exploded into 24 breweries and taprooms either open or deep into construction just in the Oklahoma City area. What follows is a comprehensive list, all offering on-site consumption in a wide variety of friendly taprooms with most featuring both indoor and outdoor seating.

JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL

As the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections rapidly approached 5 percent of the state’s population, its leaders are hard at work avoiding dealing with it. Gov. Kevin Stitt has completely taken his hands off the wheel, preferring Jesus to take it instead. Diana K. Davies, a minister at Oklahoma City’s First Unitarian Church shared on Facebook her experience with a clergy meeting and the governor on Nov. 23. “He then ‘randomly’ called on two clergy to share ‘best practices.’ These just happened to be the minister from an evangelical megachurch in Tulsa (seated in front of a large American flag), and the lead minister

from a Pentecostal megachurch in OKC. Both are white men. Both praised the governor’s leadership and explained why they were continuing to meet in person and why they were opposed to a mask mandate. The governor then announced a day of prayer and fasting on December 3 and asked us to ask our parishioners to ‘take this seriously.’ The end,” Davies wrote on Facebook. This came a week after Stitt opted to do the bare minimum, closing bars and restaurants at 11 p.m., because that’s, you know, the universal coronavirus curfew as the daily spread of the virus runs laps around its rookie spring and summer numbers. And Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt even came out of hiding for some lackluster

LANKFORD ALMOST DOES THE RIGHT THING

For just one brief moment, U.S. Senator James Lankford remembered that he was an American and not just a Republican. While Trump, Giuliani and the gang were busy wasting the country’s time pretending they didn’t get their asses handed to them at the ballot box earlier in the month, Lankford told a Tulsa public radio station that he would step in as a member of the Senate Oversight Committee and get the President’s Daily Brief, an intelligence update, into the hands of President-elect Joe Biden. “There is no loss from him getting the briefings and to be able to do that,” Lankford said. “This needs to occur so that regardless of the outcome of the election, whichever way that it goes, people can be

and half-assed rally around his own hands-off “personal responsibility” governance, lobbying people who see not wearing a mask as some bold patriotic stance rather than self-absorbed posturing that is certain to doom dozens of members of their own community to the intensive care unit or the grave. Holt’s little press conference calling for the cancellation of Thanksgiving was held a week before the holiday. You know, after travel and lodging plans have already been made. At this point, maybe COVID-19 should run for a state or municipal office in the midterms. It’s certainly doing its job a hell of a lot more efficiently than either of these elected schlubs.

ready for that actual task.” News of a Republican breaking rank from the Trump regime is a rarity this year and news ricocheted quickly around the internet. Fortunately, Lankford remembered who his owners are quickly enough to backpedal before he had to sleep in the doghouse for the rest of the lame-duck session. The Senate Republican who said last week that he would get involved if Presidentelect Joe Biden was not given access to intelligence briefings says his comments were misinterpreted. “I’m not in a hurry, necessarily, to get Joe Biden these briefings. It’s been interesting how the media, the national media — not this network, but others — have twisted this term ‘step in,’ Lankford said days later. But the thing about radio is that it’s an

actual recording of actual words spoken by actual people. And here’s Lankford’s “twisted” statement: “If that’s not occurring by Friday, I will step in as well, and to be able to push.” The interview aired on a Wednesday. It seems like the technique of convincing rank-and-follow Republican voters that what’s happening in front of their face really isn’t is being test driven by the president’s sycophants. While Lankford may look like a ventriloquist dummy with fewer facial expressions, he should do a better job of trying to hide the fact that Trump’s hand is making him move.

As we all dance our way through the jig that is the coronavirus pandemic, several local retailers are crafting a waltz out of the ever-changing guidelines. From adjusting cleaning practices to limiting in-store customers, several shop owners have gracefully, and often tearfully, been making dayto-day tweaks to standard operating procedures. This holiday season, it’s more important than ever to disconnect from Amazon and reconnect with your local shop owners. Supporting local businesses now ensures they’ll be here for future holidays and approximately 67 cents of each dollar spent at a small business stays in the area. Lucky for us, Oklahoma City metro business owners have stepped up to the challenge, providing safe in-store and online environments to keep us all healthy while checking off our Christmas lists. Whether it’s apparel, art, food or experiences you plan on gifting, there are hundreds of local options, so you’re sure to find the perfect holiday present. Many of our favorite brick-and-mortar stores have been transitioning toward online shopping recently , and just as many have

May Ave., Suite 114, offers apparel for men, women and children and has offered online shopping for years. “Customers were able to shop online with us prior to the pandemic, so the transition wasn’t as difficult for us. However, this year we added an online shopping curbside pickup option,” owner Carrie Boevers said. year; it’s been a very inventive year,” said owner Stephanie Carel. Silver Leaf Gems hosts group Zoom events and Facebook Live events so customers can virtually shop in-store. Carel is currently in the process of transitioning to virtual classes and is currently scheduling classes for January. Class participants can opt to receive their packets through the mail or pick them up in-store and build custom jewelry in their very own living rooms. than stereotypes suggest. It is a destination, an experience, an idea, and for some even home. It has few boundaries and crosses cultures, geography, socioeconomics, gender, age, and eras. Photographs and other archival items from the Museum’s Dickinson Research Center reveal this diversity. At its core, history is not about dates and events, but the people who experienced them. Cookies enters the local market BY MATT DINGER

The arrival of one of America’s most popular cannabis companies had been hinted at for months before Cookies first Oklahoma City location made its grand opening announcement — two days in advance. The short turnaround didn’t prevent a blowout opening day, with lines wrapped around the building. Its parking lot was full before doors opened, with spillover crowds abandoning their

vehicles wherever they could find spaces and joining the hundreds waiting their turn to get their hands on some of the company’s signature straims. It is the brand’s first location to open outside of a legal adult use, or recreational state. “Oklahoma has one of the fastest-growing med ic a l c a n nabis markets in the country. In just over two years, nearly 8 percent of the state’s total population have already registered as medical cannabis patients which is more than double the patient saturation in any other state. Cookies’ longstanding reputation as a respected provider of innovative, highquality cannabis products makes it well positioned to provide excellent medicine for the patients who make up this rapidly growing market,” spokeswoman Brittany Carr said. The brainchild of San Francisco cannabis cultivator Gilbert Milam Jr., otherwise known as “Berner,” and a partnership with grower Jai, Cookies grew from the reputation of Berner’s Girl

Scout Cookies strain, which still remains wildly popular and frequently found in the genetic makeup of hundreds of strain crosses. After a decade in business, this has led to several offshoot brands under the Cookies umbrella like Lemonnade and Minntz with more undoubtedly to come. More than just a purveyor of choice flower, Cookies has established itself also as a clothing line. “Cookies is a globally recognized brand with the highest-premium genetics. Cookies is more than a premiere cannabis company; it is an authentic lifestyle brand with passionate fans from all over the world. Our global presence recognizes our premium genetics and we strive to maintain the highest quality, most authentic and innovative genetics to our consumers. Berner is involved in all aspects of the business from the cultivator to the consumer and is constantly engaged in new breeding projects, working to launch differentiated brands and strains. Patients should choose Cookies over other options because of Berner’s love and passion for the plant. When you buy a Cookies product, patients should know that the plant was breeded, grown and curated with the highest quality control and care, to ensure the best and most premium medicine for our medical consumer,” Carr said. More than one location is planned —

but have not yet been announced — for the state. Carr said an announcement for the next location to open, which will be in Tulsa, is forthcoming shortly. Even though Cookies could easily keep patients coming with just their own flower strains, of which there are currently close to two dozen, the dispensary shelves are also stocked with carefully selected Oklahoma brands as well. Oklahoma favorites like ALTVM, Blue Collar Criminals, Craft Cannabis Company, Giddy’s and Mr. Mack’s can all be found inside the big blue building that was formerly an Arby’s on the north side of Northwest Expressway between Portland Avenue and Meridian Avenue. “Berner finds the best growers within the market our store is going to be in and works to bring them into the Cookies family. He looks for great people, who have great products that want to partner with Cookies and our vision. Cookies wants to incorporate local growers within our retail locations, that we deem to be up to Cookies’ high quality, premium standards,” Carr said. In fact, Cookies partnered with several Oklahoma growers, particularly ALTVM, to grow their strains for them in the state. Grower David Dodson said that they have about 600 Cookies plants comprised of between 15 and 20 strains in a revolving state of flower. “We consider Cookies to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, brands inter-

nationally and it’s great to be able to work with someone that has such great vision and can think outside of the box to get things done. We look forward to see where this takes us and the things that we can do with our partners here in Oklahoma,” Dodson said. ALTVM grew a variety of strains currently on shelves like Cheetah Piss, Lemon Pepper and Gary Payton and currently have strains like Azul Runtz and Ocean Beach in production, he said. Dodson said they have reached out to grower friends in the industry to help with cultivation. “They need more production because of how popular demand is and they’re opening a lot more stores here really quickly, so in order to keep up with the demand, we looked toward some of our friends and people that we think grow on the same level as us to help fill that void,” he said. ALTVM won a High Times Cannabis Cup this year for its Lilac Diesel in the sativa flower category and took a secondplace finish for its Garlic Breath in the indica category, but has back-burnered some of their own strains to put forth Cookies flower. “It’s frustrating because we have a lot of new genetics that we’ve been working on and developing and because we’ve cut our canopy space in half by producing four Cookies as well, we’re limited on the strains that we can produce ourselves.

However, we’ve been working on acquiring a lot more growth space to change that,” Dodson said. The COVID-19 pandemic has stifled the company’s plans for larger events currently, but maintains that they adhere to strict standards to keep patients safe while shopping. “As much as we would like to do bigger events, due to COVID-19, keeping our customers’ and employees’ safe is paramount. Cookies is adhering to all CDC guidelines to help stop the spread of the pandemic. Gatherings of people pose more risk than gatherings with fewer people, so we strongly are discouraging any celebrations or events of any kind at our stores. We are taking all safety precautions seriously and enforcing that all customers & staff need to maintain 6 feet (2 arm lengths) apart, wear masks, wash hands, and follow state, local, territorial, or tribal health and safety laws, rules, and regulations,” Carr said.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY Homework: What parts of your past weigh you down and limit your imagination? What can you do to free yourself ? Testify at FreeWillAstrology.com. ARIES (March 21-April 19)

An anonymous blogger on Tumblr writes the following: “What I’d really like is for someone to objectively watch me for a week and then sit down with me for a few hours and explain to me what I am like and how I look to others and what my personality is in detail and how I need to improve. Where do I sign up for that?” I can assure you that the person who composed this message is not an Aries. More than any other sign of the zodiac, you Rams want to be yourself, to inhabit your experience purely and completely—not see yourself from the perspective of outside observers. Now is a good time to emphasize this specialty.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

“Humans like to be scared,” declares author Cathy Bell. “We love the wicked witch’s cackle, the wolf’s hot breath, and the old lady who eats children, because sometimes, when the scary is over, all we remember is the magic.” I suppose that what she says is a tiny bit true. But there are also many ways to access the magic that don’t require encounters with dread. And that’s exactly what I predict for you in the coming weeks, Taurus: marvelous experiences—including catharses, epiphanies, and breakthroughs—that are neither spurred by fear nor infused with it.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

In 1994, the animated movie *The Lion King* told the story of the difficult journey made by a young lion as he struggled to claim his destiny as rightful king. A remake of the film appeared in 2019. During the intervening 25 years, the number of real lions living in nature declined dramatically. There are now just 20,000. Why am I telling you such bad news? I hope to inspire you to make 2021 a year when you will resist trends like this. Your assignment is to nurture and foster wildness in every way that’s meaningful for you—whether that means helping to preserve habitats of animals in danger of extinction or feeding and championing the wildness inside you and those you care about. Get started!

CLASSIFIEDS

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Is there anyone whose forgiveness you would like to have? Is there anyone to whom you should make atonement? Now is a favorable phase to initiate such actions. In a related subject, would you benefit from forgiving a certain person whom you feel wronged you? Might there be healing for you in asking that person to make amends? The coming weeks will provide the best opportunity you have had in a long time to seek these changes.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Scientists know that the Earth’s rotation is gradually slowing down—but at the very slow rate of two milliseconds every 100 years. What that means is that 200 million years from now, one day will last 25 hours. Think of how much more we humans will be able to get done with an extra hour every day! I suspect you may get a preview of this effect in the coming weeks, Leo. You’ll be extra efficient. You’ll be focused and intense in a relaxing way. Not only that: You will also be extra appreciative of the monumental privilege of being alive. As a result, you will seem to have more of the precious luxury of time.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Adventurer Tim Peck says there are three kinds of fun. The first is pure pleasure, enjoyed in full as it’s happening. The second kind of fun feels challenging when it’s underway, but interesting and meaningful in retrospect. Examples are giving birth to a baby or taking an arduous hike uphill through deep snow. The third variety is no fun at all. It’s irksome while you’re doing it, and equally disagreeable as you think about it later. Now I’ll propose a fourth type of fun, which I suspect you’ll specialize in during the coming weeks. It’s rather boring or tedious or nondescript while it’s going on, but in retrospect you are very glad you did it.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

“I made the wrong mistakes,” said Libran composer and jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. He had just completed an improvisatory performance he wasn’t satisfied with. On countless other occasions, however, he made the right

mistakes. The unexpected notes and tempo shifts he tried often resulted in music that pleased him. I hope that in the coming weeks you make a clear demarcation between wrong mistakes and right mistakes, dear Libra. The latter could help bring about just the transformations you need.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

“Home is not where you were born,” writes Naguib Mahfouz. “Home is where all your attempts to escape cease.” I propose we make that one of your mottoes for the next 12 months, Scorpio. According to my astrological analysis, you will receive all the inspiration and support you need as you strive to be at peace with exactly who you are. You’ll feel an ever-diminishing urge to wish you were doing something else besides what you’re actually doing. You’ll be less and less tempted to believe your destiny lies elsewhere, with different companions and different adventures. To your growing satisfaction, you will refrain from trying to flee from the gifts that have been given you, and you will instead accept the gifts just as they are. And it all starts now.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

“Pictures of perfection, as you know, make me sick and wicked,” observed Sagittarian author Jane Austen. She wrote this confession in a letter to her niece, Fanny, whose boyfriend thought that the women characters in Jane’s novels were too naughty. In the coming weeks, I encourage you Sagittarians to regard pictures of perfection with a similar disdain. To accomplish all the brisk innovations you have a mandate to generate, you must cultivate a deep respect for the messiness of creativity; you must understand that your dynamic imagination needs room to experiment with possibilities that may at first appear disorderly. For inspiration, keep in mind this quote from Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich: “Well-behaved women seldom make history.”

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

In accordance with upcoming astrological indicators, I’ve got some good advice for you courtesy of your fellow Capricorn David Bowie. You’ll be well-served to keep it in mind between now and January 1, 2021. “Go a little bit out of your depth,” counseled Bowie. “And when you

don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting.” For extra inspiration, I’ll add another prompt from the creator of Ziggy Stardust: “Once you lose that sense of wonder at being alive, you’re pretty much on the way out.” In that spirit, my dear Capricorn, please take measures to expand your sense of wonder during the next six weeks. Make sure you’re on your way in.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Aquarian philosopher Simone Weil formulated resolutions so as to avoid undermining herself. First, she vowed she would only deal with difficulties that actually confronted her, not far-off or hypothetical problems. Second, she would allow herself to feel only those feelings that were needed to inspire her and make her take effective action. All other feelings were to be shed, including imaginary feelings—that is, those not rooted in any real, objective situation. Third, she vowed, she would “never react to evil in such a way as to augment it.” Dear Aquarius, I think all of these resolutions would be very useful for you to adopt in the coming weeks.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

In June 2019, the young Piscean singer Justin Bieber addressed a tweet to 56-year-old actor Tom Cruise, challenging him to a mixed martial arts cage fight. “If you don’t take this fight,” said Bieber, “you will never live it down.” A few days later, Bieber retracted his dare, confessing that Cruise “would probably whoop my ass in a fight.” If Bieber had waited until December 2020 to make his proposal, he might have had more confidence to follow through—and he might also have been better able to whoop Cruise’s ass. You Pisceans are currently at the peak of your power and prowess.
